- 0:17Turn the Glory podcast, Hutters Arbadig Yostin, Rose to God to Freetag,
- 0:23Tuskers Fall to Sparti in East Lansing twenty to seventeen. I legit just got
- 0:30home like ten minutes ago. But boy, was at a blast. Guys.
- 0:35I apologize. I know I need to stop going to road games.
- 0:41Everyone that I go to we just continue to lose. Yeah, you should
- 0:46stop that. I don't get any benefit from it. Well that means we're
- 0:51going bowling, because I'm not going to Wisconsin. There you go. I've
- 0:56go my bowling shirts already bought. Wearing him next week. Oh, Michigan
- 1:03State was at blast. The people there were awesome. I love the setup
- 1:10they have. Their campus is huge, but all of their bars and restaurants
- 1:14and places are right on campus. We stayed in airbnb about half hour away
- 1:21and it was awesome there too. Everybody was just very nice. Everybody,
- 1:26I mean everybody that we talked to. When we said good luck tomorrow,
- 1:32They're like, yeah, we're gonna get her ass kicked. You guys are
- 1:36gonna kill us. We're not very good anyways, We're horrible. It was
- 1:41just that it was so funny to be the team going on the road and
- 1:47everybody's like, you guys are gonna kick her ass. Has never happened really
- 1:49to me in my life. And clearly, like I going into that game,
- 1:56knew it was gonna be a battle, knew it was gonna be a
- 1:57close game. But they've lost six straight, right, so they were defeated.
- 2:02Their season was over, and I mean as a result, the stadium
- 2:07was like, I don't know, a little over half filled. Well,
- 2:13but the announcer said, he's like, man, I'm really impressed with how
- 2:16many State fans showed out. What was he looking at? Who was No,
- 2:25I don't remember who it was, but they were not good. It
- 2:28wasn't good. I can't remember either. I will say that some of the
- 2:34Michigan State guys around us were saying that they were surprised the student sections showed
- 2:38up as much as they did, and I was too. I mean,
- 2:42it was filled it. I guess I think that probably helped. But we
- 2:47I mean, our tickets were in like the visiting section. We were five
- 2:51rows from the top. Their stadium is really neat, uh, Like the
- 2:54sides aren't as tall than that, or the enm zones aren't as tall but
- 2:58the two sidelines are pretty big. They go up quite a ways. But
- 3:01we were up towards the top behind the goalpost, and like halfway through the
- 3:06first quarter, we're like, we're gonna go sit eight rows up at forty
- 3:08yard line like because nobody's there. So right, like, we sat there
- 3:13and then there's nobody in the row behind us or front. I mean,
- 3:15we had all the room we wanted to basically stood right outside the exit where
- 3:19we could go get as many beers as we wanted. Bathroom are right there.
- 3:23It's perfect setup. It was great to watch you as. Yeah,
- 3:25if we had won the game, it would have been a great, perfect
- 3:29trip, but I didn't even expect it, So, I mean that would
- 3:34have been icing on the cake. I'm just used to driving back on Sunday
- 3:37losing, and that's what happened. So I will say the fact that we
- 3:40were only a three point favorite and they had lost six in a row,
- 3:44and you know, that's not the most confident boosting like that we were going
- 3:50to go out there and kill them. Yeah it was. It was very
- 3:53telling, and I think from an expectation standpoint, and there's no reason for
- 3:58us to expect that in any of these game games that we're going to run
- 4:00out, go out there and beat them, unless you, you know,
- 4:02pick us for the lack of a lifetime. I guess maybe then you think
- 4:06that did that? You know, I don't know, Dak, but you've
- 4:11ever just stopped doing that because your record's not great. I think the ship
- 4:15out of it. So yeah, it's your fault, not my fault.
- 4:19It's all your fault. Oh no, I was popping the champaign on Friday
- 4:24night already for you guys. I was ready. It was over in my
- 4:27mind before they get kicked off. Well was that wrong? Yeah? So
- 4:30was that ou game to last? Beblum? You know what, should we
- 4:34just get into it? How about these rafts? For the love of god.
- 4:41You know, if I if I go to my job and I don't
- 4:44work, I get fired. These guys don't real ship, and you know
- 4:46what, they'll keep their job. Fire them. That's both those games awful,
- 4:53Dak. I want to argue what what you raphic job was worse?
- 4:58I mean Oklahoma, I'd say Nebraska is the whole game was worse. But
- 5:02Oklahoma lost the game because of a non call like that pass interference. How
- 5:08do you not both of them. I guess how do you not call either
- 5:10of those? I don't know which past inference is the worse miss. Yeah,
- 5:15that those were both crazy. I thought I thought that they were both
- 5:17pretty insane. With the refs standing right there, do you why? I
- 5:26guess why? My question is why, why do you think it's getting worse?
- 5:30Is there a reason behind it? Or like it blows my mind like
- 5:36that face mask the ref is standing right there and heartbroke and something. He's
- 5:40like, dude, do you see that? The rep shaking his head.
- 5:43No, like what what do you what do you mean? No, that's
- 5:46what you're supposed to look at. Yeah, I don't. I don't get
- 5:49it, Like unless they're just trying to like they have to be trying to
- 5:54miss those calls. You can't just you can't miss those without it's crazy.
- 6:00So this ref, when we saw who we had at the game, I
- 6:04know this guy is the stepping ref. He's the one his feeder like touching
- 6:08it before, he like points his direction after he makes the call. He
- 6:10always stepped with this call. That's who I know. The guy asthma and
- 6:15I know he's not like a very good ref. Like when I say good,
- 6:17I mean consistent. I think, first of all, guess coaching staff
- 6:27never once blames the refs or talks about him, and they completely defer the
- 6:30question. And I love that. I love every bit about that. That
- 6:33is the one big no no that we all know that we've talked about on
- 6:36this podcast the past few years. We don't. You never lose games because
- 6:41of the ref ultimately just doesn't happen. Now that being said, there were
- 6:46calls that were missed, clearly, and you can point that out. I
- 6:51mean, Dean Blamedo came on the end of the game at the end of
- 6:56the game and talked about a couple of them. Obviously you look at Twitter
- 6:59and blinds. I mean, it just it's absolutely absurd, how many people
- 7:03And that's you know, that's the headline and coming from the game. The
- 7:06coaching staff needs to do a great job of just blocking all that out,
- 7:11you know, and keep focusing on getting it better, because that's that is
- 7:15the classic fan thing to do and blame the officials And yeah, we're there
- 7:18calls missed, yes, but as a fan of any team, you're always
- 7:23going to be blinded by the other side and not see it both ways.
- 7:28I can, Yes, Nebraska fans, you go on there. Yeah,
- 7:30there were several calls that you can clip and point out and say that we
- 7:34didn't lose the game because of the calls. We lost the game because we
- 7:38turned it over three times. Well that, but what I'm saying is the
- 7:43other side had missed calls or calls that if you were a fan of the
- 7:46other team, you'd say these officials were horrible ones. I can think about
- 7:50the bat, the roughing, they're the running into the kicker like that easily
- 7:57could have been roughing. The Now I guess at the game, I think
- 8:01some Husker fans are like, what but it I mean, we took out
- 8:05the kicker. There was a hit out of bounds that we clearly should have
- 8:11got called for fifteen yard penalty based on the game. What I'm saying is
- 8:15before that catch that they called the catch that really probably wasn't a catch,
- 8:18the ball hit the ground for their touchdown. There were like four consecutive plays
- 8:24that the Michigan State fans were just irate at in the stadium because we got
- 8:28calls for them. And again, whatever fan base or what side you're on,
- 8:35you're going to be upset. There's going to be miss calls. Good
- 8:37officials limit that in are consistent and don't you might miss a couple, but
- 8:43these guys in this game, they consistently missed calls, and that that's what
- 8:48upsets you. And you only see the one side and you think, oh,
- 8:50you got screwed. Well, it goes both ways. They're not out
- 8:52to get anybody. That's not the reason why anything. Regardless, they didn't
- 8:56do a great job. If Michigan State fans were also upset and they were
- 9:00ready correct, correct, and and you know, look at the penalties,
- 9:03right, Michigan State had seven penalties. We had zero. So I mean,
- 9:09look at it from that stands to you if you're a Husker fan that
- 9:11happened, think about everything you'd be seeing on Twitter if it was flip flopped.
- 9:16How horrible the officials were left and right because they had We had some
- 9:20penalties and they had zero. I mean, that's just the nature of being
- 9:22a fan. Now to the point of the officials, I don't know missing
- 9:28calls. I do think this is happening. I don't know that they've gotten
- 9:31that much worse. It's that technology has gotten that much better on instant replay
- 9:37and being able to slow things down and look at all the different angles.
- 9:39Every year it gets better, more high depth, and so that just maximizes
- 9:43when you're missing calls. And then you bring in when do you go to
- 9:46review plays? Obviously, the Harvard incomplete slash fumble play towards the end of
- 9:54the game, like that, that is weird. That was like on TV.
- 9:58It was just so weird because it looked so obvious to be a forward
- 10:03pass and even like the announcers were kind of caught off guard. They're like,
- 10:05are we not gonna review that? They're like, that's that's the game.
- 10:09I guess it happened so fast there too, because I thought I thought
- 10:15from what I saw, I thought the guy just knocked the ball backwards out
- 10:18of his hands and are his arm what wasn't moving forward? Happened so quick
- 10:20it was like gotta go, gotta go, gotta go. And yeah,
- 10:24I guess if you stop the clock there, I assume there's no tech ten
- 10:26second runoff. I don't. I wouldn't think so, but it's like all
- 10:30that stuff. The officials are like, it's going so fast you don't stop
- 10:33and the game's over and it I don't know. It's just weird that situations
- 10:37like that happened. The game management type of plays right, And it just
- 10:41felt like these officials in our game were constantly trying to make up for the
- 10:46call that was missed before. For example, the face mask on Harvard that
- 10:50happened the drive right before that. I remember which one of our players went
- 10:58on their quarterback through a pass. We two hands shoved him to the ground.
- 11:01Could it have been roughing the passer? Could have been maybe? But
- 11:05the ref did the same thing he did to Harburg. He looked the quarterback
- 11:09got up and turned around. He just started shaking his head like this,
- 11:11like no, wasn't roughing the passer? Sure enough, next possession something happens
- 11:16to Harborg did the same thing. It's like he was making up for that
- 11:18call that got shit. I didn't call that on that quarterback up, not
- 11:22that crap. It's that mindset should never happen as a ref, and I
- 11:26think it does and it shouldn't. That's the mark you should double down on
- 11:30a mistake. Yes, if a call happens, it happens right. Like
- 11:35same thing with the holding and past interferences. I think the same guy had
- 11:37thrown a couple of different holding calls deep on them and then that play happens
- 11:43late. He's like a frick. I've called too many, you know,
- 11:45I shouldn't call another one. If it's past interference, past interference, throw
- 11:48the flag. So I just I think technology has made it worse. I
- 11:52do. And I've talked about this before with officials and refing and reviews.
- 11:58I don't think there should be any reviews at all, or you should.
- 12:01There should be an extensive amount of reviews, and especially in basketball, but
- 12:05football too. Like it, you leave the game to the human error and
- 12:13know that there's going to be human air. Just just know that, and
- 12:16people can get used to their being human air because the problem is what does
- 12:20look at the catch rule or the targeting run. Sometimes you can go back
- 12:24and over, we can go back and change it to the correct call.
- 12:26Sometimes we can't. Yeah, and there's so much gray area now on what's
- 12:31targeting? What? What? What? What is that? There's so much
- 12:33grayer and what's a catch? So now we don't even we don't know what
- 12:37a catch is. We don't, we don't. We still don't get that
- 12:39rule. But if you called it on the field, that is what it
- 12:43is like, is that a catcher or not. I don't know. They
- 12:45called it on the field this way, so that's what it's gonna be,
- 12:46So I don't know's it's obviously a fine line because the more reviews you have,
- 12:50then the longer the games are, and people complain about length of game
- 12:54time. But it is It's an aspect of the game that we really haven't
- 12:58talked about this year yet on the pod. We've kind of deferred those conversations,
- 13:01but this definitely was one that it's talked about a lot. After the
- 13:07game, I will say, but I don't It's not the reason why we
- 13:09lost by any means, and I'm glad the coaching staff is handling it the
- 13:13way they are publicly, but our fans obviously are doing what they always do
- 13:18with Yeah, any game where we have Henry Carberg throwing twenty eight passes,
- 13:24we're probably gonna lose. Just a hunch, Dak anymore efficient officiating comments otherwise
- 13:31we're gonna move on to Harvard. They well, okay, there's a couple,
- 13:35there's a couple of calls. I'm pissed off about that catch when they
- 13:39call that a catch. Dimino came on and he's like, he's like it's
- 13:43objective to the replay official. What the hell does that mean? It's subjective?
- 13:48Like what okay, anyway, I don't know what that what the hell
- 13:52is? It's the same thing watching the replay at the game. You watch
- 13:58it and we're like, no way, Like, there's no way that's a
- 14:00catch. It can't be. But then the guy next to Michigan State is
- 14:03an older guy. He's like, well, the ball doesn't move, and
- 14:05I'm like, you're right, rule, And as I'm watching, okay,
- 14:09maybe maybe it didn't move, and we're like, well they called it a
- 14:11touchdown on the field. Well yeah, so maybe they can. So it's
- 14:15like you go through that and you're like, well, where the hell did
- 14:16we get to? Like, it's is one of those things that by looking
- 14:20at it, I see what he's saying, like it is up to the
- 14:24official because it's what is it? What is it a catch? Is that
- 14:26a catch by rule? I don't know. Well, then there was there
- 14:31was one more last thing about the officials. One more who caught that last
- 14:35first down when they should have called that first down? That was wasn't it?
- 14:43Yeah? That was so over that first down marker. It wasn't even
- 14:46funny, but no second and one. Like I thought the same thing live
- 14:50too watching it. I said, first down, no second, but everything's
- 14:54going so fast. I didn't stop anything and just let it go. No,
- 14:58but it was just it's funny because it wasn't. It was everyone watching
- 15:01it. Even the announcers were like, all right, then they got the
- 15:03first down and they're lining up and they're like, oh wait, even like
- 15:07the TV. Did you watch it replay at all? Hunter? I haven't,
- 15:09but I saw that the screenshot the TV had moved the first down line
- 15:16like they had already reset behind, so it looked like a first down,
- 15:20especially because and then like as the play was going, they shifted the lines
- 15:24back. Oh are they gonna stop this clock or what it is? And
- 15:30stuff like that that you wonder how that stuff gets missed. I don't know.
- 15:33I'm not a yeah whatever. We lost the game because we had two
- 15:37interceptions, and Heiner Karberg through twenty eight times and they played well, but
- 15:43jumping on the high harbord here. That's that's topic number two that's getting talked
- 15:48about is him specifically. So I want to first mention the turnovers. Turnover
- 15:54one was a third and fifteen or seventeen and did we maybe have a couple
- 16:00of guys open on that play? I guess threw it down, got him
- 16:04inside the five. Is a punt, so I I like that one.
- 16:08I'm like whatever, because alternative there you run a draw for sixty yards and
- 16:14then you punt it and you probably well the way Bouchhine he punted, probably
- 16:17aren't getting it inside the five. So whatever. Second interception also, yes,
- 16:23I guess, I guess we're down, so you can say we're gonna
- 16:26be down in games, but we were also in urgent, urgent risk taking
- 16:30time because we're down ten with eight minutes to go. And yeah, the
- 16:33pass was not a good thrown fall he just airmailed it. And then obviously
- 16:40the fumble is the third one that is end of the game. So turnovers
- 16:42were there are three of them. Yes, one I'm not really counting because
- 16:47it's a punt, and then the other two are like, well, we
- 16:48were down, we're scrambling, right, It wasn't like we were missing.
- 16:53I'm not upset about the Heinrich, Like, I don't think this is Heinrich's
- 16:56fault. It's just if he's your quarterback and you're throwing twenty eight times,
- 17:00you're going to be in trouble. Yes, and that's so, Yeah,
- 17:03I agree with you. But here's the here's the thing with Harber. Everybody's
- 17:07like saying, like it's he's the problem. He's not the problem. I
- 17:12think it was more of a hit. We didn't play to his strengths.
- 17:18I mean, I think when you run him more than I mean he ran
- 17:22it fourteen times technically, but we just didn't run the ball well. And
- 17:26that's what our team's strength is. And when we can't run the ball well,
- 17:30Heinrich is not going to do well because that's what has to happen for
- 17:33him to perform well. And those are sacks. Yeah, he had the
- 17:37long scramble at the end that really end, and he had that he had
- 17:42the make three guys miss eighteen yard whatever it was early on to first down
- 17:49run. So like that, I'm with you that that was the one thing
- 17:53that I was frustrated. Play calling wise, we still don't run him enough.
- 17:57And Harber, for the people that are saying he's the problem, guys,
- 18:02you just I don't know what your expectation is for Nebraska quarterbacks because one
- 18:06theme the last goddamn hustard quarterback that people liked, like name, we don't.
- 18:11Maybe Taylor Martinez is probably right, Are you kidding me? Taylor t
- 18:19mart his freshman year? Yeah? Year, No, guys, Taylor Martinez
- 18:27left one of the most hated quarterbacks that we've had. Like the freshman year
- 18:32is the last time? That was the last time a quarterback we've Like,
- 18:33I'm excited for this guy. I think Tommy I think Tommy was somewhat liked
- 18:38at times, but again, like, it's always a quarterback, and what's
- 18:44our expectation, Guys? We saw Jeff Simms was our starter coming in the
- 18:48year. This was Heiner Carberg, our backup. Who we were I mean,
- 18:51I I'm like, there's no way this guy could be your quarterback.
- 18:55Like it's Heiner Carberg, right, what he's done and been able to win
- 18:57games for us has been InCred Why are we expecting him to be an elite
- 19:03quarterback in the Big twelve, the Big ten? Like there's not many to
- 19:06begin with, and how many hell how many elite quarterbacks are there in the
- 19:10goddamn country. Maybe ten, fifteen, Like we expect to get one of
- 19:15those guys right now? No, so I get it. Yeah, does
- 19:18he missthrows? Yes? Does he? Is he have accurate passes a lot
- 19:22yet sometimes but not all the time? Is he does? He look awkward
- 19:26sometimes back in the pocket, doesn't know how to elude rushers. But yeah,
- 19:32but that's what we got right now, and that's what that's what that's
- 19:34what we got to work with. Use his strengths. As the part I
- 19:38was upset about we did. We don't just have design QB runs a lot
- 19:41and let him go out and make plays. So I I don't that that
- 19:48frustrates me when people are so on Harburg and oh my god, he's so
- 19:52horrible. We need to get a better quarterback. Guys, I'm I agree.
- 19:55We need to go to the game. Well, we need to go
- 19:57to the transportal and try to get a new guy. That that's what the
- 20:00new age is. It's a new era. Do I think Harbor is the
- 20:03future of Nebraska football? No, Like he shouldn't be. But that's what
- 20:07we're working with here. And because your expectation of it should not be that
- 20:11high. That that's the frustrating part with it all. Like just relax and
- 20:17the guy's a leader, he's on the on the field. You watch it
- 20:19was tough, He encourages people. He's a freaking leader. You want to
- 20:25try Sims again, that is that what we want to do. People.
- 20:26You want to throw someone who can't throw the ball accurately and turns it over.
- 20:30Hims can't turn the right way after the snap if even catch. Just
- 20:36like I read, I read, fans win a party. I feel pretty
- 20:38out there. I heard and I guess it came down to it. But
- 20:45Harbor is not defeated. He's not out there like I suck. He is.
- 20:48He's competing, he's working his ass off, and he's not the best.
- 20:52He's no, he's not the best, most talent quarterback. He never
- 20:55will be. But we want to go out there that's gonna lead and encourage
- 20:57and and and do all the tangible stuff. That's what he is, that's
- 21:02what we have, and he's not yet. He makes mistakes like that's that's
- 21:07what's frustrating. I think here in my comparison with Harber that I kind of
- 21:12drew up is not a whole lot different than the Mickey Joseph situation. Mickey
- 21:18wasn't our head coach. Scott was our head coach. Mickey comes in.
- 21:21There's a little bit of burst of element of surprise, guys can rally behind
- 21:26him. Things look good. There's a question, Okay, Mickey, did
- 21:30we want Mickey for the future? Yeah, maybe not lose a couple of
- 21:33games, but still produces some Obviously, this is pre all of the scandal
- 21:40stuff that went down, but like, very similar to Mickey, Dude,
- 21:44did we want Mickey Joseph as the future head coach Nebraska's maybe? I don't
- 21:49know. Let's see what else we could look at. Let's see if we
- 21:52can find something else. And that's what we did with the scandal piece.
- 21:56But that's where Harbord's at. It's like he's around guys really, but now
- 22:00they know what he is. They're figuring out what he wants to do.
- 22:03They figure out his strength is weak. This is we need to find something
- 22:07else. But we got to get one more win with him. Yeah,
- 22:10we'll look in the transfer portal. It's I was just mostly and I mean
- 22:14the announcers, Oh my god, if I had to hear them say one
- 22:15more time, the Nebraska receivers aren't really helping out their quarterback here, Okay,
- 22:21we get it, Okay, because all I keep hearing is how open
- 22:26our receivers are from people, right, I know, I thought the same
- 22:29thing and live I'm like our receivers, I don't I don't know. I
- 22:34don't see them open much. And is that a product of them not having
- 22:41unique schemes or is that a product of them not being able to break down
- 22:47and make it hard cutting a route like it? Maybe is a lot of
- 22:49things. They have a young coach, obviously, we have a lot of
- 22:52injuries. Probably a lot of those things. Yeah, it was. Yeah,
- 22:57there's a lot of people out there just shitting on Heinrich, and I
- 23:02I'm not upset at Heinrich, not at all. The crazy crazy part is
- 23:08as bad as it looked. You still walked out of the day. If
- 23:11you went out, you win the Big Ten West. Also true, it
- 23:15is amazing as that is our situation to win the West really didn't change.
- 23:21Nope. I do want to help you, yes, and I do hope
- 23:25that people realize we still see to win one more game, because yeah,
- 23:30going to the Big Ten Championship would be neat, but we have to get
- 23:34to a bowl game. I mean that's what people are really after. And
- 23:38we lose out, you lose a lot of the momentum. Of the middle
- 23:44of season. That'd be very all that that that'd be a train wreck if
- 23:47you lost, because a lot of the good mojo that everyone's feeling about the
- 23:51program and its direction and what rules doing and the process. So you have
- 23:55to at least win one of her next three. And I don't. I
- 24:00don't feel like this game was much different. The way we played. Was
- 24:04our defense great? No, but it still played pretty good. We gave
- 24:08up big plays. That's what hurt us, and real said that in postgame
- 24:11like, that's what killed us. Where their their chunk plays they got.
- 24:15Was our offense good? No? Has our offense been good? No?
- 24:22Did they do anything different? No? They still it's the same team we've
- 24:26seen, Right, Michigan State just did a couple of things a little bit
- 24:29better. And on offense, Michigan State did what I think we need to
- 24:33do is have some of those creative plays that actually hit and are executed.
- 24:37Well. That's why Michigan State offense looked quote unquote better, was because they
- 24:41they were able to execute their trick plays or they call trick plays they're early
- 24:47on in the game, hitting that tight end down the scene. Like they
- 24:49were able to execute hit that play. We need to be able to do
- 24:52that a couple of times here to end the year on the offensive ends.
- 24:56So we're trying to do a basketball preview year. So I have one more
- 25:03quick thought. I'm not going to add too much, only disappointing. One
- 25:07big disappointing part. I just thought, and they expected it and mentioned it
- 25:10on the pod too. The away game road environment, early game sleepy Michigan
- 25:15State fans were really, we're kind of quiet slow. We did not do
- 25:21a great job of creating our own sense of urgency just from the get go.
- 25:26I just thought our sideline just seemed a little quie. I don't think
- 25:29the guys didn't play hard. They played hard and their effort was there.
- 25:32It just we didn't seem like we have the we were fighting for our program
- 25:34in our lives like we have been the past few games. So again,
- 25:40don't don't expect that to continue. I think it just kind of is one
- 25:42of those things. We won five of our last six, and not that
- 25:45we were thinking we were pretty good, but we just kind of came in
- 25:48there a little sleepy, I would say, and not as much sense of
- 25:52urgency and got hit in the mouth early on which is what we saw in
- 25:57that first quarter. So was my last comment thought on football because we got
- 26:02basketball. Anything else on next week, gotta go want to know this week,
- 26:08right dash, Yeah, I'm trying to watch the goals get tore down.
- 26:12I'll tell you that we might do it. Who knows? All right,
- 26:21Nebrasketball Austin's twenty one and nine projected team, Let's go. I'm ready,
- 26:27man. I spent a lot a lot of road time reading and about
- 26:33previews and our players, and it got me pretty excited too. I'm not
- 26:37gonna lie. Just just learning about these guys picking up from where we kind
- 26:42of left off last year, and I kind of forgot about what happened towards
- 26:47the end of the year. But guys, we won nine Big Ten games
- 26:49last year. That was not not even close to being expected to what we
- 26:53were supposed to do. And why that was. Hoiberg completely changed his identity
- 26:59and his style to fit Big ten basketball. He adjusted, we gotta be
- 27:03more defensive minded and focus, be able to get stops on defense, and
- 27:08yeah, we don't have the talent right now, and to spread it out
- 27:12and do the five out running gun threes like his style is known for.
- 27:18We played more through a big and Derek Walker, Sam Grisol was a stud
- 27:22at point guard, and it resulted in a lot better season. Missed barely
- 27:27missed tournament for the Huskers, losing to Minnesota, was not great uh in
- 27:33the Big Ten tournament, but finished off the year really strong, and I
- 27:38think the pieces that we brought in here speaks to that new style that Fred
- 27:42is trying to go off of. So it is exciting to look at our
- 27:47schedule too, and some of these new guys that we got brought in.
- 27:49I'm interested to see how we get started here tomorrow actually against the Linden.
- 27:56Yeah, the big concern is health. Obviously, that's kind of what happened.
- 28:00Actually, I think that was one of the bigger surprises, is what
- 28:02we were able to do down the stretch with how healthy we works. We
- 28:04had a lot of injuries last year. I totally agree. I'm interested to
- 28:10see how this works. I mean, we haven't really gotten a chance to
- 28:12see the whole team and how it's gonna work this year. Like in all
- 28:17the preseason games, it feels like most people haven't been playing because of early
- 28:19season injuries. Obviously, Kaise rolled a shinkle against uh I don't remember who
- 28:26they were playing. Oh that's right. Yeah, yeah, that made your
- 28:29heart to get a beat. Yeah, oh definitely. No Kaise, Yeah,
- 28:33Kaise is very important. Which I mean that was kind of what changed
- 28:36last year is KAISEI got moving to the starting lineup and that's when things kind
- 28:38of started clicking. You got can't started to fulfill that potential that you thought
- 28:41he could do. I feel pretty good, pretty good. I think that
- 28:47was a little bit of blessing in disguise there with the with the injuries,
- 28:51because it did it forced it forced to kise Kaise how do you? I
- 28:55don't even know how you says bad? So it forced him to step up
- 29:00and say, Okay, he's here, and he's an All Big Ten preseason
- 29:03honoree right now getting recognized nationally for his shooting. So it's exciting a guy
- 29:10like that having to come back and and potentially make a really big impact on
- 29:12the Big Ten. Dak, I know you're high on the Husker basketball team
- 29:15this year too, Yeah, I actually am. I think they're going to
- 29:18be I think they're gonna win their first tournament game. This is the year.
- 29:25I think they'll end up twenty one to nine. I think they'll end
- 29:29up around that, So that'd probably be what would that be, probably what
- 29:33you think, six or seven seed, maybe eight somewhere in there. Oh,
- 29:37I don't know if I'll go that high. I don't depends on I
- 29:41guess how Big Ten Play goes. But yeah, I mean Kaisse, I
- 29:44think I did. The last year, of the games that he played more
- 29:47than thirty minutes, we won sixty percent of them, and the ones he
- 29:49didn't play thirty minutes, we only won forty. So your non conference is
- 29:56really easy to This schedule is so much nice or I mean, yeah,
- 30:02our hardest game through the first week in December we played Creighton and then the
- 30:06next but that's our non con is case State December seventeenth. That's probably the
- 30:14most challenging outside of Creighton. I mean, yeah, go through that,
- 30:18because I was looking at that too, which got guys, it's smart,
- 30:21right, You're you're trying to get a schedule that's tough enough so that you
- 30:25have a little bit of potential to win some key games to get you into
- 30:30the tournament, but you also need the wins to add up as well,
- 30:33And I think that's what the schedule allows us to do. Here, in
- 30:36the non con I mean, we go to May we play Oregon State at
- 30:40a neutral site, we go to KSE State, we get Creating at home,
- 30:42but the neutral site for Oregans, like I think the neutral site for
- 30:45Organs like suit Falls or something like. I think it's it's driving distance of
- 30:49Nebraska. Yeah, so yeah, dude, Lindenwood, Florida, Florida A
- 30:52and m Rinter Stonybrook, Oregon State and Sue Falls Dukeness. I don't remember.
- 31:00Why are they playing in two Falls? I have no idea what.
- 31:06And then we hit Creighton and then we have Big ten play North Dakota State,
- 31:10k State, South Carolina State. I mean, and even that,
- 31:12the Big ten kind of looks a little down this year outside of Michigan State
- 31:17at four, Perdue at three, it's kind of not as scary as it's
- 31:21been in the past. We do are projected are like, I don't know,
- 31:26I've seen twelve, thirteen, I've I've seen nine. We're down there
- 31:29towards the bottom again where we have been the past few years. I think
- 31:32I think that's good to stay under the radar for a while as we move
- 31:37into Big ten play. And then yeah, I think there's potential there to
- 31:40go what we did last year in the Big ten, you know, close
- 31:42to five hundred. We have. We have some new players coming in that
- 31:48as Hoiberg's teams do, they turn over a lot. But some of these
- 31:52guys we got in here again pending health. A lot of these guys didn't
- 31:56play against Done, I think more for cautionary reasons. But we got some.
- 32:01We got some good transfers in in this year that are gonna supplement the
- 32:07pieces we have returning. So we did lose Derek Walker, Sam Griesel,
- 32:10Bandamel, those guys are gone. But yeah, those were honestly, Walker
- 32:19and Greasel pretty big losses. Walker was our leader in point t devouns and
- 32:22asists, so that would't kind of stinct. But I mean, yeah,
- 32:28roster wise, were a little smaller than we were a latch or our floor
- 32:31is a little bit higher, like our smaller guys on average are a little
- 32:35bit taller, but our taller guys are a little bit shorter. We are
- 32:37this is what I've read and seen. We are the guys that we came
- 32:42in and get. They are long and athletics, they are they are dudes.
- 32:45They Yeah, we have you know Caseys and Marcus Lawrence are not big
- 32:50guys, but are our wings and our fours and fives they are. They're
- 32:54they're guys. They're they're big ten built basketball players. Yeah. So the
- 32:59guys we brought then Rank Mass who's six foot nine, big, fourth year
- 33:02from Bradley. He averaged fourteen points and he didn't have rebounds thirty three and
- 33:07that's the big thing for him. And then we got six seven forward.
- 33:10Hold on, before we move on Rank, I'm gonna go through. We're
- 33:14gonna go each one of these because I got a couple of comments on him.
- 33:16Oh okay, Rank, I'm excited for He needs to be physical in
- 33:22a big ten. That's the one scary piece that I'm worried about with them
- 33:27is can he hold his own defensively? But he has the numbers and what
- 33:30he's done I'm at Bradley has been very impressive. So I like I like
- 33:37him. He's probably stirring center, right is it gonna be? These will
- 33:42kind of be our projected starter. So him. Bryce Williams we bring in
- 33:45as a guard from Charlotte. He was a second team All conference I believe
- 33:50was the c I T player. Yeah, he's a great shooter. He's
- 33:55a long, lanky guard. He's gonna score. He's gonna be one of
- 33:59our leading scorers up there. Josiah Alick or alec from originally from Lincoln,
- 34:06came back after playing at UMKC New Mexico. He's gonna be one of those
- 34:12physical forwards. I think that probably will start. He's a good defender,
- 34:15a hustle type player. And then Case as we know, and then JaMarcus
- 34:21Lawrence is probably the other one that we're thinking may start at guard for us,
- 34:27who came on again at the end of last year because of a lot
- 34:30of the injuries and and proved that he could he can play in the big
- 34:32ten and hold his own. So those probably could be our five starters.
- 34:37I think there's still obviously a lot of things that could change that we you
- 34:44know, pending injuries and playing time. I think a lot of these teams
- 34:46now you're playing nine or ten or eleven guys and you're figuring out who your
- 34:50best five are as you get closer to the end of the year. Yeah,
- 34:53Juwan Gary and CJ. Wilcher are probably really the only other two fighting
- 34:57for that starting spot. Correct both returned. I mean Gary was out for
- 35:00the year. I believe last year got injured. Yep, So those two
- 35:07guys are kind of struggled for the most part. Last year. He wasn't
- 35:09what he was two years ago. No. Hoiberg's talk talked highly of him
- 35:15though here in the offseason about you know, getting in better shape physically with
- 35:19his body and shooting the ball well too. So Boogie Coleman's uh point guard
- 35:27transfer from ball State and Missouri. I think that there's a potential he could
- 35:31start some games, but he's he's more of the physical guys from what I'm
- 35:37understanding, and has a lot of experience a lot of these guys that were
- 35:40getting That's one thing I think Hoiberg's realized is what you need in the Big
- 35:45Ten. You need guys that have played basketball a lot. The year that
- 35:47we struggled with mcbryce McGowan's and Case was a sophomore. I think that year,
- 35:55like those guys are just so young and and he just physically and mentally
- 36:00just got out hustled and beat by some of these more experienced Big Ten teams.
- 36:06Eli Rice has been our leading scorer here when we went to Spain and
- 36:10then was also our leading scorer against Doane in the exhibition game. He's he's
- 36:15a scorer. You can get to the rim very easily and uh excited.
- 36:21I guess to see where he rotation. So Sam Hoiberg, I love Sam.
- 36:29If he was three inches taller, man, he'd be freaking lighting this
- 36:34world up. He's just a dog. He gets he gets after it.
- 36:38He's not he's not the best basketball player in the world, but he'll fight
- 36:42for loose balls. He'll he'll do all the dirty work. He's the guy
- 36:45in practice you won on your team, on your practice team. Want you
- 36:49know, the guy that's gonna push everyone. He's the coach. You know,
- 36:52he's a coach's kid. I mean you want that, right, So
- 36:55yeah, I expect Kiss to be better this year. He played in the
- 36:59feed World Cup, you know, against real competition and real size, and
- 37:05arguably this is Fred's best three point shooting team that's actually put together. But
- 37:08it's also still got decent size and defense. So hopefully that last last guy
- 37:13we were getting here, Dak You mentioned him was d Up. It's our
- 37:15d Up. Very late commitment, but we'll see. I think he's gonna
- 37:22find some playing time in the low post. Along with potentially Blaze Cata,
- 37:27who's also on the team from last year. We'll see he was very,
- 37:30very raw, but I think we saw the physicality potential that he had a
- 37:36year ago. And then the other one that I don't think will probably ever
- 37:39see because of all of the gambling things coming out of Iowa is the years.
- 37:47We'll see if he plays. But he was gambling on games last year
- 37:53when he played for Iowa. Oh there you go, you got busted and
- 37:58it was like on his mom's account or something. Still can even play.
- 38:02He is currently suspended, I believe. Yeah. So the way, is
- 38:10Tominaga good to go tomorrow? I have not heard any I think I think
- 38:15Brent said it was a game time decision last I saw. I think we're
- 38:20favored by twenty one and a half or twenty two against Lyndon Wood. I
- 38:24think linden Wood's a recent D one college out of Saint Louis real quick record
- 38:31predictions, Austin, I don't know how many games we play, but you
- 38:35said twenty one and nine dak out of thirty. What are we thinking Let's
- 38:40go twenty three and seven. Jesus, who do you think we are?
- 38:45I'm going I'll go to the schedule. I'll go eighteen and twelve, twenty
- 38:52three and seven. I think that can be actually really good. I mean,
- 38:55in your schedule is super easy. Are we shot nine non on Friends
- 39:00games? I feel pretty good about that. Max, I think your non
- 39:02converse you lose one. All right, Well, we will be back on
- 39:09Wednesday to preview the Maryland Terrapins. The Turps coming to Lincoln for another chance
- 39:19to get the Huskers bowling. Go Big Red CB are remember sooner. I
- 39:24love that burnt orange dude. That
