- 0:00Speaker 1: I've been watching for two hours. You gotta score a goal.
- 0:03Speaker 1: It's one more thing.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm strong andy, one more thing.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Oddly enough, I didn't feel that way. I don't know,
- 0:13Speaker 1: I don't know. I guess i'd learned enough about soccer.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I got caught up in World Cup fever something like that.
- 0:18Speaker 1: After a lifetime of mocking soccer and people who watch it,
- 0:24Speaker 1: I got into the World Cup this year and like
- 0:27Speaker 1: I was, I wasn't sitting there watching it, but I
- 0:30Speaker 1: had it on in the background the entire time the
- 0:32Speaker 1: World Cup final and thought it was very exciting. I
- 0:34Speaker 1: thought the fact that it was zero zero going into
- 0:37Speaker 1: extra time was exciting. I wasn't thinking it was dull.
- 0:41Speaker 2: It's funny how we've crossed paths, or you know, taken
- 0:45Speaker 2: the opposite sides on this because I've watched soccer for
- 0:47Speaker 2: years and years and years, and World Cup finals make
- 0:50Speaker 2: me insane because they're so conservative. I find them boring.
- 0:55Speaker 2: It's like watching you know, basketball in the four cores
- 0:59Speaker 2: what do they call it the four corners era? Or
- 1:01Speaker 2: they would just you know, get the ball and play
- 1:03Speaker 2: keep away to run out the clock. And that's why
- 1:05Speaker 2: they instituted the shot clock. And stuff like that. But
- 1:08Speaker 2: you know, obviously the world that disagrees with me.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Yeah, we don't need to get into the hex's and
- 1:15Speaker 1: o's of soccer. I suppose either like it or you don't.
- 1:19Speaker 1: But the World Cup Final in the United States was
- 1:21Speaker 1: a really, really big deal. And when they were talking about,
- 1:25Speaker 1: you know, a billion people around the world watching, I
- 1:27Speaker 1: think that's actually true, as opposed to when they say
- 1:29Speaker 1: that for the Super Bowl. I've always wondered, is anybody
- 1:32Speaker 1: anywhere else in the world give a crap about this?
- 1:34Speaker 3: Like?
- 1:34Speaker 1: How many places in the world. I was thinking about
- 1:37Speaker 1: this we're about to hear from to Tom Cruise. After
- 1:40Speaker 1: I heard Tom Cruise talk about a billion people around
- 1:42Speaker 1: the world, I thought, yeah, I mean, practically every high
- 1:46Speaker 1: school in the world probably has a soccer team. How
- 1:49Speaker 1: many high schools are there any high schools in Spain
- 1:53Speaker 1: where anybody plays our version of football with pads and
- 1:56Speaker 1: helmets and kick the oblong balls up? Is there one
- 1:59Speaker 1: in the but there's not? How about there's not one
- 2:02Speaker 1: high school football team? Is there one in Europe? I
- 2:05Speaker 1: don't even know how.
- 2:06Speaker 2: There are, but they are very very few, and they're
- 2:08Speaker 2: a novelty. It's generally an American expat organizes it and
- 2:12Speaker 2: the kids like playing and it gets written up in
- 2:15Speaker 2: the New York Times as Scandinavians playing American football. It's
- 2:18Speaker 2: a novelty.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Basketball's definitely grown as a sport, which can be proven
- 2:22Speaker 1: by the fact that we lost the gold medal a
- 2:24Speaker 1: bunch of times in a row in the Olympics. So
- 2:27Speaker 1: basketball is caught around the world, but soccer's everywhere for
- 2:31Speaker 1: whatever reason. And it was in the United States yesterday
- 2:34Speaker 1: and they made it. They it was like the Super
- 2:37Speaker 1: Bowl and the way they the way they handled it
- 2:39Speaker 1: on the television. I always feel guilty playing part of
- 2:42Speaker 1: a national anthem, like I've done something sacrilegious. But let's
- 2:45Speaker 1: hear a little of Jennifer Hudson singing the national anthem yesterday.
- 2:54Speaker 1: See what supply.
- 3:06Speaker 4: So?
- 3:07Speaker 1: I heard the reviews of her version of the national anthem.
- 3:09Speaker 1: She's no lubin Studdard. Who is who beat her? I
- 3:13Speaker 1: think on American Idol.
- 3:14Speaker 2: That year fifty years ago and nobody's ever heard it
- 3:16Speaker 2: goes on for a minute in fifty six seconds.
- 3:19Speaker 1: It's very good, though she did the two minute version. Yeah, man,
- 3:23Speaker 1: for some reason, why was I doing this?
- 3:25Speaker 2: The other day.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I have no idea why. Uh, I think I played
- 3:27Speaker 1: it for one of my kids. The Whitney Houston national anthem,
- 3:31Speaker 1: after the first national anthem, after nine to eleven. Oh
- 3:34Speaker 1: my god, that was something else.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Jenniferson is an amazing vocalist. She is just you know,
- 3:43Speaker 2: some people's sinuses and throats are shaped in such a
- 3:46Speaker 2: way that it makes a pleasing noise when they sing.
- 3:49Speaker 2: The rest of us not so much. But what are
- 3:52Speaker 2: you gonna do?
- 3:53Speaker 1: Here's a little Tom Cruise, who did the voice over
- 3:56Speaker 1: for the pregame.
- 3:57Speaker 4: More then thirty days ago, forty eight nations began a journey.
- 4:05Speaker 4: They crossed oceans, they crossed borders, they crossed cultures.
- 4:12Speaker 1: And together they showed.
- 4:14Speaker 5: Us why this game belongs to the world.
- 4:19Speaker 2: We came, alright, it's a soccer tournament, take it easy.
- 4:22Speaker 1: The game on planes probably flew first class. It's not
- 4:24Speaker 1: like they were in boats, rowing or something. Anyway, This
- 4:27Speaker 1: is the.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Part of the strings to many strings.
- 4:30Speaker 1: This is the part I wanted to hear from Tom Cruise.
- 4:33Speaker 4: But these stories, now, these stories belonged to each and.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Every one of us, do they to every nation, to.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Every player, to every supporter, to every volunteer.
- 4:46Speaker 2: What does that even mean to every dream carried on
- 4:49Speaker 2: the pitch?
- 4:51Speaker 5: So as we gather for one final chapter, let us
- 4:55Speaker 5: celebrate a tournament that brought the world together, celebrate each other.
- 5:02Speaker 2: This football.
- 5:06Speaker 1: So I thought this this greatness. Stop dyeing your hair.
- 5:12Speaker 1: I thought that was interesting him calling it football because
- 5:16Speaker 1: the most popular sport, the most popular TV show, the
- 5:21Speaker 1: most popular really anything in the United States is football.
- 5:27Speaker 1: But we don't mean that sport, so calling it calling
- 5:31Speaker 1: something else football seems pretty crazy.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I wish we had that chunk of Nate Bargatzi's great
- 5:36Speaker 2: bit right ready to go, and we will play a
- 5:39Speaker 2: game called football. This game will be played with the
- 5:42Speaker 2: feet a little bit.
- 5:44Speaker 1: There's a little kicking. How much is it worth? Sometimes three?
- 5:46Speaker 1: Sometimes one? Uh, but I don't know.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know.
- 5:51Speaker 1: If we're gonna we probably ought to What aughta happens?
- 5:54Speaker 1: We got to rename our sport because calling it football
- 5:57Speaker 1: is kind of dumb since it's almost entirely, especially now,
- 6:00Speaker 1: a passing game.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Yeah, and there is a.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Sport called football, it's most popular sport on the planet.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Yeah, but do we want to call it? Everybody else
- 6:09Speaker 2: calls it American? Football. But we know that because we're here.
- 6:14Speaker 2: So yeah, what do we call?
- 6:16Speaker 1: Actually, how about you change the name of your sport?
- 6:18Speaker 1: Or will bomb you back to the stone?
- 6:20Speaker 2: Oh, for God's sake, that is, I do not appear.
- 6:23Speaker 2: I disassociate myself.
- 6:26Speaker 6: Tariff anybody who calls it football my god until the
- 6:29Speaker 6: courts overturned it. Yeah, soccer is a per perfectly good name.
- 6:34Speaker 6: Passing running black ethon, where did soccer come from? Did
- 6:38Speaker 6: we make up the term soccer because they all call
- 6:40Speaker 6: it football?
- 6:43Speaker 2: I don't know. So that's a good question. I mean,
- 6:49Speaker 2: the Brits invented soccer and they called it football, right. Yeah,
- 6:57Speaker 2: Oh that is some seriously bad thumb. I'll get you
- 7:03Speaker 2: an answer, okay.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Uh so, uh give me this ABC report on the
- 7:09Speaker 1: halftime from Sophie Flay.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Many online criticized to the game as boring, and some
- 7:15Speaker 3: reviews that the halftime show weren't much kinder. The show
- 7:24Speaker 3: star studded with Madonna, Shakira, Chris Martin, and even the Muppets.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Performing all right, young man, let's go.
- 7:31Speaker 1: It's a big shot.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Jason Sedaikas appeared in character as Ted Lasso, introducing Justin Bieber.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Some calling the mix of performances and appearances bizarre and disjointed.
- 7:42Speaker 1: First of all, it's the worst kind of journalism that
- 7:45Speaker 1: exists on earth. We've been complaining about a long time,
- 7:47Speaker 1: grabbing a couple of social media posts and building a
- 7:50Speaker 1: story around it. Some people said this, but.
- 7:54Speaker 2: You should have our freedom of speech taken away.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Congratulations to the World Cup Final. You have risen to
- 7:59Speaker 1: the level of the Super Bowl where everybody complains about
- 8:02Speaker 1: your halftime show. That's a sign of success. It would
- 8:05Speaker 1: seem right, since that's what we do in America with
- 8:08Speaker 1: our version of football. Every single year, no matter what
- 8:10Speaker 1: you put out, everybody complains about it.
- 8:13Speaker 2: You know, my question would be, can we all take
- 8:15Speaker 2: a step back and think about this? Number One, nobody's
- 8:18Speaker 2: ever happy with it, So number one, why do you
- 8:22Speaker 2: act surprise that you're not happy with it? Number two?
- 8:25Speaker 2: What are we doing here? What is this exercise? I've again,
- 8:32Speaker 2: I've called for this for ages a marching band, or
- 8:36Speaker 2: a boxing match, or a hockey game or something just anything.
- 8:42Speaker 1: But pop stars at the moment. Who wants the feats
- 8:45Speaker 1: of strength? Well, this is not a pop star of
- 8:48Speaker 1: the moment. This is a pop star of the moments.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Forty years ago. Let's hear a little of Madonna.
- 9:04Speaker 2: There's not a one percent chance she is singing that.
- 9:07Speaker 1: And she's dressed like a whore. She look at the
- 9:11Speaker 1: elderly lips sinking horror. Kids, Why is that elderly horror's
- 9:21Speaker 1: lips not matching up at the mid worry about it, son,
- 9:27Speaker 1: just In John, she was dressed like a whror. Madonna
- 9:30Speaker 1: is not a horror in case that matters to anyone.
- 9:33Speaker 2: She's a brilliant business woman, she is.
- 9:35Speaker 1: But when you're getting free medical care from the government
- 9:39Speaker 1: because you qualify it by age, you should no longer
- 9:43Speaker 1: wear thigh highs in public. In the bedroom with your husband, fine,
- 9:47Speaker 1: but in public trying to be sexy. You have been
- 9:50Speaker 1: eclipsed by people a long time ago. It's just it's
- 9:55Speaker 1: just weird. It's weird. Yes, give up the sex symbol thing.
- 10:00Speaker 1: You can still go out and sing and everything, but
- 10:02Speaker 1: don't don't. Don't be a sex symbol.
- 10:05Speaker 2: It's weird.
- 10:07Speaker 1: I didn't actually see the ted Lasso thing with Justin Bieber.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Will will give you a little of that.
- 10:12Speaker 5: Wait, coach, I gotta say the first half a halftime
- 10:15Speaker 5: knocked my darn socks off.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Spectacular bit ofhead.
- 10:18Speaker 2: I mean, how the heck is anyone gonna be a
- 10:20Speaker 2: fall that gonna be tough? Yeah? Yeah, you know what
- 10:22Speaker 2: I think we need. We need some heart, you know,
- 10:24Speaker 2: someone that has some soul, someone who can bring the love.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Woo.
- 10:29Speaker 2: You think of what I'm thinking.
- 10:30Speaker 1: One step ahead of your coach.
- 10:31Speaker 2: You always are. All right, young man, let's go.
- 10:34Speaker 1: It's your big shot.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Okay, I listen to me. Go out there.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Don't be nervous.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Nope, he's watching, all right, make us proud.
- 10:50Speaker 1: And then he starts singing. So that's justin Bieber. I
- 10:52Speaker 1: didn't realize that was justin Bieber. I caught part of that,
- 10:55Speaker 1: and I was just saying to my son, because he
- 10:57Speaker 1: plays guitar in front of crowds and stuff like that
- 11:00Speaker 1: he has and I said, man, that'd be something standing
- 11:05Speaker 1: in the middle, because did.
- 11:06Speaker 2: You see any of it.
- 11:07Speaker 1: It's a Bieber and an acoustic guitar period in the
- 11:10Speaker 1: middle of the field, surrounded just by himself. And that's
- 11:13Speaker 1: a heck of a thing because that place was one
- 11:15Speaker 1: hundred and eighty thousand people. Are hover many people in
- 11:17Speaker 1: there in the middle of the field by yourself with
- 11:20Speaker 1: acoustic guitar. I would not be able to get my
- 11:21Speaker 1: hands to work. You know, I'm sure I shouldn't get
- 11:24Speaker 1: my fingers to function.
- 11:26Speaker 2: I'm finding myself wondering would I be more nervous. That's
- 11:32Speaker 2: the interesting thing I said to my kids about are
- 11:35Speaker 2: less than if I'm in in a little place and
- 11:37Speaker 2: there are four people staring at me.
- 11:39Speaker 1: That I told my kids that are very same thing
- 11:41Speaker 1: I said. You know, my experience though, actually is playing
- 11:44Speaker 1: music or speaking. The giant crowds are way easier because
- 11:48Speaker 1: you can't focus on the individual bored or angry person.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Right.
- 11:52Speaker 1: But I've played like in bars where there's twenty people
- 11:57Speaker 1: and you can like hear their individual song. Yeah. Famously,
- 12:04Speaker 1: when a band I was in Gladys this would have been.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Nineteen eighty eight anyway, heavy rock band. We played a
- 12:17Speaker 2: bunch of covers and a few originals, and we played
- 12:19Speaker 2: our first tune at this bar. It was like early
- 12:22Speaker 2: early in the evening, first set, play our first tune
- 12:25Speaker 2: and hear this gal's voice rang out. Well, they got nerve.
- 12:30Speaker 6: Anyway, I'll never forget that chick and her tone of voice.
- 12:36Speaker 6: Oh boy, But the great Joni Mitchell once said, these
- 12:39Speaker 6: are easiest relationship in the world is ten thousand people.
- 12:43Speaker 2: One is the hardest.
- 12:45Speaker 1: And if you ever done in public speaking, it's it's similar.
- 12:49Speaker 1: You're staying up in front of a seven thousand people
- 12:51Speaker 1: or whatever is way easier than like a dozen people.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Worst at playing music was I think it was an
- 13:02Speaker 1: open n night Mike Open. No, it was not open Mike.
- 13:07Speaker 2: He really left a lasting impression on you. It was
- 13:09Speaker 2: brief and torrid.
- 13:11Speaker 1: I was so drunk. It was not it was with
- 13:15Speaker 1: a now I'm picturing it. But anyway, we're playing a
- 13:18Speaker 1: set and like three or four songs in and I
- 13:21Speaker 1: had written all these songs, So it particularly made me
- 13:23Speaker 1: angry that somebody said, is every song you do in
- 13:26Speaker 1: g and I thought and and I just thought it
- 13:31Speaker 1: was hard to ignore because like, what kind of a
- 13:34Speaker 1: criticism is that.
- 13:37Speaker 2: It's a key I'm comfortable singing it or it.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Just happened right now we've done four in a row
- 13:43Speaker 1: that they aren't all and what why does it matter?
- 13:47Speaker 2: What are you some sort of key of d flat activists.
- 13:52Speaker 2: That's funny.
- 13:52Speaker 1: I could hardly concentrate to do the next time because
- 13:56Speaker 1: it's like what if it had been I hate your songs.
- 13:59Speaker 1: It's think, well, some love them, some ahead of them. Okay,
- 14:03Speaker 1: but that that's a wait, wait a minute, wait a minute,
- 14:08Speaker 1: The hell do you care? Exactly? Made me want to
- 14:11Speaker 1: stop the song and move the cable up a fret.
- 14:14Speaker 2: There you happy? Uh, that's such a funny criticism, I know.
- 14:22Speaker 2: So look that I see the next clip in the line.
- 14:25Speaker 1: I was actually going to skip that, you want.
- 14:27Speaker 2: I was gonna say, it's Shakira performing. You could play
- 14:30Speaker 2: Shakira or half a dozen other rhythmic pop princesses through
- 14:34Speaker 2: the years, and I would never have any idea, and
- 14:38Speaker 2: I would have no opinion having played it.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I was gonna skip that. I think we've probably
- 14:43Speaker 1: had done enough for the halftime show, and let's just
- 14:45Speaker 1: get to the how the whole thing ended. After one
- 14:48Speaker 1: hundred and twenty five minutes, it's a long time no
- 14:51Speaker 1: scoring for most of that oax it in Williams that
- 15:00Speaker 1: way to Spain their second World Cup title.
- 15:04Speaker 5: Spain, for the second time in their history, have won
- 15:08Speaker 5: the World Cup.
- 15:10Speaker 1: It was zero zero, but that was not an indication
- 15:17Speaker 1: of how the game was going. There were sixteen shots
- 15:22Speaker 1: on goal by Spain and that number was Let me
- 15:25Speaker 1: look at this zero by Argentina zero. They didn't get
- 15:31Speaker 1: one kick at the goalie and all that time amazing.
- 15:37Speaker 2: It was ridiculous. I was so discouraged. I was rooting
- 15:41Speaker 2: for Argentina too, and I was just so just discouraged
- 15:45Speaker 2: watching it. Oh, for God's sake, would you guys do something.
- 15:49Speaker 1: I almost bought an Argentina jersey to wear around for
- 15:52Speaker 1: a couple of days before this match. That would have
- 15:54Speaker 1: been my dumbest jump on a bandwagon's sports purchase of
- 15:58Speaker 1: all time. And I've made some dumb ones.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Well, if you did bust it out of the closet,
- 16:04Speaker 2: people would speak Spanish to you because they could only
- 16:07Speaker 2: assume that you're in Argentine. Why else would you be
- 16:10Speaker 2: wearing it.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I saw lots of people over the weekend in Jerseys,
- 16:13Speaker 1: lots of people in either in various jerseys. I saw
- 16:16Speaker 1: a couple yesterday coming out of the target. They were
- 16:19Speaker 1: holding NaNs. I assume boyfriend and girlfriend. The dude was
- 16:23Speaker 1: in a Spain jersey and she was in an Argentina jersey.
- 16:25Speaker 2: I thought that was cool. Wow, And do you think
- 16:27Speaker 2: they are Americans?
- 16:29Speaker 1: Oh, they're absolutely Americans.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Yeah, People just going to the sports bars and stuff
- 16:33Speaker 1: like that, wearing jerseys like you do when you got
- 16:35Speaker 1: to watch it a big sporting event with a whole
- 16:38Speaker 1: bunch of people.
- 16:39Speaker 2: They'd adopted a team. But see that's not cool anymore
- 16:42Speaker 2: because our team did pretty well.
- 16:44Speaker 1: I've seen lots of people wearing a variety of I
- 16:47Speaker 1: don't know if they'd like developed teams that they liked
- 16:50Speaker 1: over the years of their life or just as Urnmotever,
- 16:52Speaker 1: I've seen lots of different jerseys from people in.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, fair enough. I just think you ought to
- 16:57Speaker 2: be jailed for it. I mean, free spe each and everything,
- 17:00Speaker 2: but you can speak in jail. So you've gone against
- 17:04Speaker 2: your country. You'd be traded. You are a foreign agent,
- 17:07Speaker 2: an unregistered foreign agent.
- 17:08Speaker 1: I enjoyed it. I've learned enough about Talker that I enjoyed.
- 17:11Speaker 1: But I got no comebacks for anybody who says I'm
- 17:14Speaker 1: supposed to watch for an hour and a half and
- 17:16Speaker 1: nobody scored a goal.
- 17:18Speaker 2: It's hard to argument one team is utterly dominant and
- 17:23Speaker 2: the scoes zero zero. This game is broken. You need
- 17:27Speaker 2: to fix the rules. You know. I actually missed the goal.
- 17:32Speaker 7: I had been watching the whole game, got up to
- 17:35Speaker 7: got some out of the fridge, come back and it
- 17:37Speaker 7: says one zero, and everybody's jump on up and down,
- 17:42Speaker 7: wah wah. Well, I guess that's it.
