- 0:11Hello friends, it is Sean here it is Monday, the start of a new
- 0:16week. It is the 23rd of October.
- 0:19So glad to have your company as you and I are this week and next
- 0:23week going to work our way through the rest of the book of
- 0:27acts. We're going to hear all about
- 0:29what Paul and his other friends are up to as they are well
- 0:33travelling around that part of the world, sharing gods were
- 0:36dealing with all sorts of persecution and challenges.
- 0:40But cast your mind back to Thursday last week.
- 0:42Do you remember where we left off?
- 0:44Paul was being dragged through the crowd by these soldiers as
- 0:48the crowd was trying to kill him and just as about to take him
- 0:52out into the control of the Roman Gods, he says Can I talk
- 0:56to the crowd? And he turns around, takes a
- 0:57deep breath and cut. That's where we ended.
- 1:02So we are going to continue with that scene as we hear what is
- 1:05Paul going to say to this crowd of people who are intent on
- 1:09ending his life, so incensed are they by what he is saying.
- 1:14So let us not delay any longer, but get back to the story
- 1:18reading Acts Chapter 22. Brothers and esteemed fathers,
- 1:33Paul said Listen to me as Ioffer my defence when they heard him
- 1:37speaking in their own language. The silence was even greater.
- 1:41Then Paul said. I am a Jew born in Tarsus, a
- 1:45city in Sicilia, and I was brought up and educated here in
- 1:49Jerusalem under Gamaliel. As a student, I was carefully
- 1:54trained in our Jewish laws and customs.
- 1:57I became very zealous to honor God in everything I did, just
- 2:01like all of you today. And I persecuted the followers
- 2:05of the Way, hounding some to death, arresting both men and
- 2:09women and throwing them in prison.
- 2:11The high priest and the whole council of Elders can testify
- 2:14that this is so, for I received letters from them to our Jewish
- 2:18brothers in Damascus, authorizing me to bring the
- 2:22followers of the Way from there to Jerusalem in chains to be
- 2:26punished. As I was on the road approaching
- 2:29Damascus about noon, a very bright light from heaven
- 2:33suddenly shone down around me. I fell to the ground and heard a
- 2:38voice saying to me. Saul, Saul, why are you
- 2:42persecuting me? Who are you, Lord?
- 2:46I asked and the voice replied, I am Jesus the Nazarene, the one
- 2:51you were persecuting. The people with me saw the
- 2:55light, but didn't understand the voice speaking to me.
- 2:58I asked What should I do, Lord? And the Lord told me, get up and
- 3:04go into Damascus, and there you will be told everything you are
- 3:08to do. I was blinded by the intense
- 3:11light, and I had to be led by the Hand to Damascus, by my
- 3:14companions. A man named Ananias lived there.
- 3:18He was a godly man, deeply devoted to the law, and well
- 3:22regarded by all the Jews of Damascus.
- 3:25He came and stood beside me and said, Brother Saul, regain your
- 3:30sight, and that very moment I could see him.
- 3:34Then he told me, the God of our ancestors has chosen you to know
- 3:39his will and to see the righteous one and hear him
- 3:42speak, for you are to be his witness, telling everyone what
- 3:48you have seen and heard. What are you waiting for?
- 3:51Get up and be baptized. Have your sins washed away by
- 3:55calling on the name of the Lord. After I returned to Jerusalem, I
- 4:01was praying in the temple and fell into a trance.
- 4:04I saw a vision of Jesus saying to me, Hurry, leave Jerusalem,
- 4:08for the people here won't accept your testimony about me.
- 4:12But Lord, I argued. They certainly know that in
- 4:15every synagogue I'm imprisoned and beat.
- 4:17Those who believed in you and I was in complete agreement when
- 4:21your witness, Stephen, was killed.
- 4:24I stood by and kept the coats they took off when they stoned
- 4:28him. But the Lord said to me, go, for
- 4:32I will send you far away to the Gentiles.
- 4:36The crowd listened until Paul said that word.
- 4:39Then they all began to shout away.
- 4:41With such a fellow, he isn't fit to live.
- 4:44They yelled, threw off their coats, and tosssed handfuls of
- 4:47dust into the air. The commander brought Paul
- 4:51inside and ordered him lashed with whips to make him confess
- 4:54his crime. He wanted to find out why the
- 4:57crowd had become so furious when they tied Paul down to lash him.
- 5:02Paul said to the officer standing there.
- 5:05Is it legal for you to whip a Roman citizen who hasn't even
- 5:08been tried? When the officer heard this, he
- 5:11went to the commander and asked, what are you doing?
- 5:14This man is a Roman citizen, So the commander went over and
- 5:18asked Paul, Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?
- 5:22Yes, I certainly am, Paul replied.
- 5:25I am too, the commander muttered.
- 5:29And it cost me plenty, Paul answered.
- 5:33But I am a citizen by birth. The soldiers who were about to
- 5:37interrogate Paul quickly withdrew when they heard he was
- 5:40a Roman citizen and the commander was frightened because
- 5:43he had ordered him bound and whipped.
- 5:47The next day the commander ordered the leading priests
- 5:50intercession with the Jewish High Council.
- 5:52He wanted to find out what the trouble was all about, so he
- 5:56released Paul to have him stand before them.
- 6:09Jesus, we think of those who govern our lands who enforce the
- 6:14laws. What a difficult and conflicting
- 6:17and confusing job it can be. Lord, I just pray that you give
- 6:21wisdom to our leaders. Align their hearts with yours.
- 6:27May the decisions they make reflect your kingdom's values.
- 6:32Lord, speak clearly to them. Surround them with wise counsel
- 6:38so that this can be a world where your love is shown.
- 6:45May people be surprised with the love that they see in the
- 6:48leadership of our nations. We thank you for your spirit and
- 6:54that you reside right here. You give us your conscience, you
- 6:59guide us. You inspire us.
- 7:02We just pray for all the help that you can give us.
- 7:06Because, Lord, you know we need it all.
- 7:10Bless us today as we love those around us.
- 7:14We pray all of this in your name, Jesus.
- 7:17Amen.
