- 0:01It's the difference between a fortress and a facade.
- 0:05There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:08Chad #1135 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:12yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:15you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:17This message is dedicated to Brian Kane.
- 0:20Here's the upgrade. You may build a life that looks
- 0:23impregnable, but upgraded thinking knows the walls you can
- 0:25see are never the ones that save you.
- 0:28Here's the story. Think about what a castle is.
- 0:32The picture of wealth, the picture of security.
- 0:34The quintessential fortress. Thick walls, high towers built
- 0:37to keep the danger out. In the hills of Turkey, there's
- 0:41a place called Burj Al Babas, a developer, built a whole village
- 0:45of castles, hundreds of identical Disney style castles
- 0:48sold to buyers chasing that feeling of magic and safety.
- 0:52So he borrowed, and he built 587 castles, $200 million.
- 0:58Then Turkey's currency cracked, demand dried up, and the debt
- 1:02didn't care. Today it's a ghost town.
- 1:05Rows and rows of empty castles, no water and no one home. 587
- 1:11fortresses, and not one of them could survive a single bad year.
- 1:15But here's the twist, those castles were copying Disney, and
- 1:19Disney copied a real 1 Neuschmannstein, the fairy tale
- 1:23castle in Bavaria that inspired Sleeping Beauty Castle.
- 1:26According to Guinness World Records, it's the tallest castle
- 1:29in the world, one of the most photographed buildings in the
- 1:31world, and since opening to the public has had over 60 million
- 1:34visitors. Walt saw it and built his icon
- 1:37from its silhouette. But the history of
- 1:40Neuschmannstein is another layer to the story.
- 1:43It was the ruin of a king. Ludwig the Second poured his
- 1:46fortune and then mountains of borrowed money into building the
- 1:49castle. He went so deep his own
- 1:51government declared him unfit to rule, and days later he was
- 1:54found dead in a lake he never saw the castle finished, so the
- 1:58fairy tale fortress the whole world copies was itself a
- 2:02monument to a man who mistook fantasy for foundation.
- 2:06History doesn't repeat, human nature does.
- 2:10Now here's the mirror, because this was never really about
- 2:13castles. We do the same thing with our
- 2:16own lives. We built the parts that show the
- 2:19house, the title, the image, walls that photograph
- 2:22beautifully and protect nothing. When the hard year comes and the
- 2:26hard year always comes, that's when you find out whether you
- 2:30build a fortress or a facade. Sam Zell, who made billions
- 2:34buying when everyone else was buried in debt, said it did not
- 2:37matter how smart you were if you didn't have staying power.
- 2:40The real fortress is never the part people can see.
- 2:43It's the reserve underneath the margin, the staying power.
- 2:48And now I can't look at that Disney logo, the castle that
- 2:51lights up before every movie, without thinking of this.
- 2:54The most magical picture in the world is built on the shape of a
- 2:58ruin. Let it be your reminder.
- 3:01The better story to tell yourself is build the fortress
- 3:04no one can see. Keep something in reserve, stay
- 3:08out of debt you can't survive. Build a life that can lose a
- 3:12year and keep going. Many are building an appearance
- 3:16of security and strength, but never the real thing.
