Latest / 987 The Shock Circuit / INTERVIEW: ZUN HUI (KOPIKIA)
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Alright, so our guests in the studio, as always, I
- 0:05Speaker 1: love to glaze them up, right. Uh, she just shared,
- 0:08Speaker 1: she's turning 25 this year. She turned 25, if I'm
- 0:11Speaker 1: not wrong. Turning, turning, turning, sorry, no such thing as
- 0:15Speaker 1: quarter life crisis for her. She seems to have gotten
- 0:18Speaker 1: it all figured out already because she's an entrepreneur, still
- 0:21Speaker 1: a student as well, but she's serving you very nice
- 0:23Speaker 1: corn milk from the place we call KopiKia. Say hello
- 0:26Speaker 1: to you.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Thank you for having me.
- 0:32Speaker 1: We're also live on TikTok, which you have a lot
- 0:34Speaker 1: of friends on there supporting you right now. Someone even saying,
- 0:37Speaker 1: I love Kopikia's house. Such a vibe. Some people said,
- 0:40Speaker 1: I set an alarm to watch this live, by the way.
- 0:44Speaker 1: OK, so before we actually get to Kopikia and all
- 0:47Speaker 1: the home-based cafe and all that, tell us more about
- 0:49Speaker 1: you and your life. Like, yeah, you,
- 0:52Speaker 1: me,
- 0:52Speaker 2: um, I think, uh, my character changed. I became from
- 0:57Speaker 2: an extremely introvert extrovert. Yeah, so, uh, I think previously
- 1:04Speaker 2: I'm very, um, dependent on people to the extent where
- 1:07Speaker 2: I think I don't even know how to take, um,
- 1:10Speaker 2: public transport myself or I have a.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Fear of maybe talking to the waitress or waiter, you know.
- 1:16Speaker 2: So after Kopiki I became um very extrovert, which like
- 1:20Speaker 2: I can talk to any customer and all, yes, correct, hm,
- 1:25Speaker 2: so I think like because um there's a big change
- 1:28Speaker 2: in my life where some people, um, left my life
- 1:31Speaker 2: and I think that um make me grow, forced me
- 1:35Speaker 2: to grow out of my, of my comfort zone.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I mean, look, when you decided to start this business, right.
- 1:42Speaker 1: It may not have occurred to you that like, oh,
- 1:45Speaker 1: It's more than just a passion for making good items.
- 1:48Speaker 1: It's also the interaction with people, right? So then how
- 1:53Speaker 1: did you set yourself out again the mindset of like, OK,
- 1:55Speaker 1: you know what, I got to lock in because this
- 1:57Speaker 1: is going to make or break my business.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Yeah, actually, my, my initial thought was actually to treasure
- 2:05Speaker 2: the customer interaction. So maybe to become more friends, then actually, um,
- 2:11Speaker 2: then it came about corn milk because I
- 2:14Speaker 2: I realized that matcha is the trend recently. Then I
- 2:16Speaker 2: didn't want to serve matcha. I, I kind of don't
- 2:19Speaker 2: want to.
- 2:20Speaker 1: We don't matcha cafe here in Singapore and
- 2:25Speaker 2: my location is pretty bad. I will admit that my
- 2:27Speaker 2: location is pretty bad. It's quite far from the MRT
- 2:30Speaker 2: or even bus stop. Then after that, the customer will
- 2:32Speaker 2: tend to complain about my location being pretty bad. Then
- 2:36Speaker 2: after that, I didn't want to serve matcha. So the
- 2:38Speaker 2: next kind of vegetables, um, category would be corn because
- 2:42Speaker 2: I love corn myself.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, I'm like I think I can eat
- 2:46Speaker 2: like a few cups of corn from that.
- 2:48Speaker 1: I also love corn soup. Like, oh my gosh,
- 2:50Speaker 2: then I was like, why not try corn milk?
- 2:53Speaker 1: Was it something that you tried before? No, you made
- 2:57Speaker 1: it on your own. Like this is just something you
- 2:59Speaker 1: came up with.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just like mix and match. I think it
- 3:01Speaker 2: would be an unexpected, um, out of recipe.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like an unexpected combination, I would say. Yeah,
- 3:09Speaker 1: someone here in the comment section saying her changes lives
- 3:12Speaker 1: for the better.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I love that.
- 3:15Speaker 2: No, and I think, um, my coffee, I've been changing
- 3:18Speaker 2: a lot of coffee beans and all. I think my
- 3:20Speaker 2: first batch of coffee was undrinkable I would say, yeah,
- 3:25Speaker 2: because it's, um, I, I would say that it's quite
- 3:27Speaker 2: diluted because of the beans I use. So after I
- 3:30Speaker 2: try to test and try out and then customer give
- 3:33Speaker 2: me feedback, I'm, I'm just.
- 3:34Speaker 2: It's like, just give me your honors. If it's not nice,
- 3:37Speaker 2: just tell me it's not nice.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I'm so sorry to interrupt joking. Do you roast your
- 3:40Speaker 1: own beans or how we mix it. OK, you mix it. OK.
- 3:44Speaker 1: That's what I wanted to know. Just in case people
- 3:46Speaker 1: aren't too familiar with Kopi, the style of coffee that
- 3:48Speaker 1: you serve, is it like the hawker center Nanyang style
- 3:51Speaker 1: or is it the Starbucks like fancy
- 3:53Speaker 2: coffee hawker center.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Yeah, OK, go. I'm saying hi to Jet Barbecue, whom
- 3:59Speaker 1: I order from quite a lot actually, commenting right now saying, hey,
- 4:03Speaker 1: proud of you. Hey, you're the best.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Oh, that's my boss, is it? Yeah, previously I worked
- 4:09Speaker 2: for him, yeah, on like Jack barbecue.
- 4:13Speaker 1: So where
- 4:13Speaker 1: did the entrepreneurial spirit and mindset come from to set
- 4:16Speaker 1: up something like Kopi Kia once you know that you
- 4:18Speaker 1: can make a good coffee and milk and all that.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Actually, ah, I never expect that it will, it will
- 4:25Speaker 2: be like, um, such a supportive journey for everyone. So
- 4:30Speaker 2: I just try to make up, like to do better,
- 4:34Speaker 2: to serve better coffee and all. So I think naturally
- 4:36Speaker 2: if you try to improve your product and then customers
- 4:39Speaker 2: find it good, they will naturally recommend their friends
- 4:43Speaker 1: and they
- 4:43Speaker 1: come back, yes, their
- 4:44Speaker 2: mouth.
- 4:45Speaker 2: mouth. It's actually, yeah, it's actually mouth to mouth, and
- 4:47Speaker 2: I would say content creating is quite important, I realized. Yeah,
- 4:52Speaker 2: so I try to do content myself. So previously all
- 4:55Speaker 2: my contents are actually more of pictures because I told
- 4:58Speaker 2: myself that I don't think I can do video content.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Then I realized that, why not try.
- 5:03Speaker 1: You're a Gen
- 5:04Speaker 1: Z, you have to try. You should have been born
- 5:06Speaker 1: with this talent.
- 5:08Speaker 2: No, I hate being on camera. Yeah, OK. Then after,
- 5:13Speaker 2: after this I realized that OK why not try
- 5:15Speaker 2: something,
- 5:16Speaker 1: OK.
- 5:18Speaker 1: We're gonna take a quick break now. When we come back,
- 5:21Speaker 1: I believe you brought some items with you. Can we
- 5:24Speaker 1: open it up on air and talk about it? OK,
- 5:27Speaker 1: I've never tried corn milk in my life. Me neither,
- 5:30Speaker 1: because she made it from scratch. So we don't know how, how,
- 5:33Speaker 1: how is it even made. Let's go. She may not
- 5:35Speaker 1: tell us, but it's OK. And I think there's been
- 5:38Speaker 1: such a boom of people starting off their own businesses
- 5:41Speaker 1: at home. I heard that it's a vibe. We can't
- 5:43Speaker 1: wait to go there and try, although West Side a
- 5:45Speaker 1: bit far for us.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Oh, I'm East Coast. Yeah, but I, I was gonna
- 5:51Speaker 1: say if I ever run the rail corridor, maybe you
- 5:53Speaker 1: just stop by. I'll take a detour to Hillcrest and
- 5:55Speaker 1: then go on to Kopi. Yeah, it's just that, OK, um, disclaimer,
- 5:58Speaker 1: Joakim doesn't really drink coffee, but he can just try
- 6:01Speaker 1: the corn milk on its own, right? Yes. OK, OK,
- 6:04Speaker 1: so do we, do we try it now live on air.
- 6:06Speaker 1: So while we try the corn milk, she's actually mixing
- 6:09Speaker 1: a drink live on air right now. OK. So can
- 6:12Speaker 1: you describe to us what you're about to make.
- 6:14Speaker 2: So here is the
- 6:15Speaker 2: Corn, corn milk, corn soy milk, and then inside here
- 6:19Speaker 2: is the coffee. Yeah, then I'm gonna pour inside and
- 6:23Speaker 2: just mix, but the ice melt in a bit. It's OK.
- 6:25Speaker 2: You want to try
- 6:26Speaker 1: first? Yeah, OK, I'm gonna try the corn milk. Shall
- 6:28Speaker 1: we try the corn milk first? OK, OK, wait, we
- 6:30Speaker 1: have to vigorously,
- 6:31Speaker 1: vigorously,
- 6:32Speaker 2: yes, correct.
- 6:33Speaker 1: OK. OK. Can you hear it? A bit of ASMR
- 6:36Speaker 1: this morning. I'm very scared spill on the pan. I know,
- 6:38Speaker 1: please don't, please don't. OK, here we go. Opening it
- 6:41Speaker 1: right now. OK, I'm gonna smell it first.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I can smell the corn. Oh, just went in without
- 6:48Speaker 1: sniffing it. OK, it smells a little bit like soybean,
- 6:53Speaker 1: but it's a little bit savory.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Yes, I love it.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I love it, but it's sweet at the same time.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Like this is like a nice like wake me up
- 7:01Speaker 1: kind of drink. Oh my gosh, guys, I get why
- 7:03Speaker 1: you say just drink it on its own. I can
- 7:05Speaker 1: drink it on its own.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Yeah, because um.
- 7:09Speaker 2: They request to just full corn soy milk, but I
- 7:13Speaker 2: was worried that it might be a bit sweet. Yeah,
- 7:15Speaker 1: OK, maybe like a, like a glass or a slightly
- 7:19Speaker 1: like a teacup. This is so good. It's good, right?
- 7:21Speaker 1: It's so good. I love it. I wonder how it's
- 7:23Speaker 1: going to taste like when you mix it with coffee. Yeah, OK, OK, let's,
- 7:27Speaker 1: let's see what happens. OK, if you want, you can
- 7:29Speaker 1: try and pour it in front of the mic so
- 7:30Speaker 1: we get a bit of the ASMR. OK, I'm gonna,
- 7:32Speaker 1: I'm gonna record this now. OK.
- 7:35Speaker 2: OK,
- 7:36Speaker 1: and now she's pouring the corn milk into a cup
- 7:38Speaker 1: of ice. She's making iced coffee here today. By the way,
- 7:42Speaker 1: we are live on TikTok as well if you want
- 7:43Speaker 1: to see all the action. Yes, some people say they're
- 7:46Speaker 1: salivating watching this. OK, so she actually brought, um, her
- 7:51Speaker 1: copy with her this morning. Thank you for making it
- 7:53Speaker 1: so early, by the way.
- 7:54Speaker 2: No worries.
- 7:55Speaker 1: OK, is it or not, ah, the coffee?
- 7:57Speaker 2: I think not that already. OK, she's
- 7:59Speaker 1: pouring it into the, oh, I can actually hear it.
- 8:03Speaker 1: There we go. This is right here, ASMR. I'm so
- 8:07Speaker 1: excited to try. OK, So, this is yours. Go. OK,
- 8:11Speaker 1: thank you so much. Must you shake it or what? Yeah,
- 8:13Speaker 1: you can't shake it. Give it a stir.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I just kind of do a little swirling the cup. OK,
- 8:22Speaker 1: you can hear. So if you just joined us live
- 8:24Speaker 1: on air, we're joined by Chunhui of Kopi Kia, and we,
- 8:27Speaker 1: we chanced across her entire article. It's a home-based cafe,
- 8:31Speaker 1: but people are raving about corn milk, the coffee, and
- 8:35Speaker 1: the snacks that you sell as well, sons.
- 8:38Speaker 1: So I officially stirred it up. I'm gonna try it.
- 8:41Speaker 1: People on TikTok are saying, Oh, barista in action at
- 8:44Speaker 1: the DJ station. So lucky. Guys, by the way, we
- 8:47Speaker 1: don't have this every morning. And we didn't. She actually
- 8:50Speaker 1: just brought it out of her own will. So thank
- 8:51Speaker 1: you so much. OK, sip it, here we go.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Oh my God.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Guys, whoever said this is life-changing, it is,
- 9:01Speaker 1: it's
- 9:02Speaker 2: so good. OK, actually, me, myself haven't had a full
- 9:04Speaker 2: cup of corn coffee.
- 9:07Speaker 1: OK, hold on. The coffee itself is quite cow. I
- 9:09Speaker 1: can taste it. Yeah, it's quite, it's
- 9:11Speaker 1: quite thick.
- 9:11Speaker 2: This is not enough.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Wait, hang on. Do you just say you have not
- 9:15Speaker 1: tried your own recipe?
- 9:18Speaker 2: No, as in I tried, but like
- 9:20Speaker 1: she's never committed to drinking a whole cup.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Oh, OK,
- 9:23Speaker 1: OK,
- 9:24Speaker 2: maybe like a 1 to 2 mile. Ah,
- 9:27Speaker 1: this is actually mind-blowingly good. It's mind blowingly good. Not,
- 9:32Speaker 1: not that you can tell us how you make the
- 9:33Speaker 1: corn milk and all that, but how long does it
- 9:36Speaker 1: take to get corn milk.
- 9:38Speaker 2: You mean the process, yeah,
- 9:42Speaker 1: spilling secrets, of course,
- 9:42Speaker 2: around
- 9:45Speaker 2: 2 to 3 hours depending on the amount that I'm making.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Wow, OK, and it usually goes, you, you finish everything
- 9:51Speaker 1: in like a day.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Like all the supply, OK, the way that I would
- 9:56Speaker 1: describe this is that I would need a bigger cup. Like,
- 10:00Speaker 1: do you have different sizes? No, only one size. Girl, I,
- 10:03Speaker 1: I'm telling you, I think you got to consider coming
- 10:06Speaker 1: up with a larger cup because I feel like I
- 10:08Speaker 1: could sit on this like all morning. It's so good
- 10:10Speaker 2: because
- 10:11Speaker 2: I actually I got, I saw on TikTok that it's
- 10:14Speaker 2: like it's a Thailand, they make their coffee in
- 10:18Speaker 1: like a cup, a giant cup.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Right? Yeah, exactly. It's really good. But I would say
- 10:22Speaker 1: because it already has a bit of natural sweetness in
- 10:25Speaker 1: the corn milk, um, but it's not overwhelming, and there's
- 10:28Speaker 1: a touch of like savory flavor in it also. It's
- 10:31Speaker 1: such a balanced cup of coffee that has so much
- 10:34Speaker 1: depth to it. I can chug it like all morning. Wow,
- 10:37Speaker 1: love it. I've been so quiet here because I don't
- 10:39Speaker 1: drink coffee. She doesn't drink coffee. I wanna, I wanna
- 10:41Speaker 1: ask in terms of snacks, OK, aside from this lovely
- 10:45Speaker 1: peanut butter which is served.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Toast. What else should we try at Kopikia?
- 10:48Speaker 2: Um, I would say my sardine. Actually, I wanted to
- 10:52Speaker 2: bring the sardine here, but like I don't know if
- 10:55Speaker 2: I will make, make a mess here because it's like
- 10:57Speaker 2: a French loaf with a sardine dip.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Actually that's the
- 11:01Speaker 1: specialty. I'll drop by and try it myself. You know what, girl,
- 11:04Speaker 1: thank you so much for being so generous and bringing
- 11:06Speaker 1: your signature items here to share with us. You've gained
- 11:09Speaker 1: a lot of fans right now, people commenting on.
- 11:12Speaker 1: TikTok Live saying I'm loving the hearty reactions. It's making
- 11:15Speaker 1: me want to try it. What time do you open?
- 11:17Speaker 1: I need that right now. So 46 Chu Road, give
- 11:21Speaker 1: us the opening times and days.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Um, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. by ride. But if
- 11:27Speaker 2: we are out of bread, then, then we're just closed
- 11:29Speaker 2: for the day. OK,
- 11:32Speaker 1: yeah, and you, you update on social media?
- 11:33Speaker 2: Only weekends, on certain weekends only because I'm still teaching
- 11:38Speaker 2: part-time tutor.
- 11:39Speaker 2: So Sundays I'm down for tutoring. OK,
- 11:42Speaker 1: girl, you're a hustler. I love that about you. Um,
- 11:44Speaker 1: before we let you go, any maybe anything that you
- 11:47Speaker 1: want to share about upcoming plans, launches, just encourage people
- 11:51Speaker 1: to go visit you since you have national radio right now.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Um, I think there's nothing. Um, I think currently what
- 12:00Speaker 2: I'm trying to focus on is my quality of drinks and,
- 12:05Speaker 2: and toast because I know that.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Uh, quite a few of people is coming down, but
- 12:10Speaker 2: I still hope like my quality will still maintained, yes, correct,
- 12:15Speaker 2: but for pop-ups or what so.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Oh, there's currently no plans for that.
- 12:19Speaker 1: OK,
- 12:20Speaker 1: maybe in the future when you expand, like if you
- 12:23Speaker 1: expand or if you have plans to expand, wishing you
- 12:25Speaker 1: all the best. We're always supporting you. If you ever
- 12:28Speaker 1: want to shout out anything else, just hit us up, OK? OK. Alright.
- 12:32Speaker 1: And if you are tuning in now here on the
- 12:34Speaker 1: Shock circuit, Joakim and I love supporting young entrepreneurs, people
- 12:37Speaker 1: who are starting their own businesses, and we would love
- 12:39Speaker 1: to give you a shout out as well. We're still
- 12:41Speaker 1: live on TikTok, and we'll catch you again very soon. So.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Thank you. Thank you for having me.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Corn milk is life-changing. I love it.
