- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey there, it's your old pal Josh. This week's curator
- 0:04Speaker 1: of s Y s K selects, and this week I've
- 0:07Speaker 1: selected how breast implants Work. Uh. It's a pretty great
- 0:11Speaker 1: vintage episode. Has it all science, pop culture, history, surgery,
- 0:17Speaker 1: all sorts of weird stuff. And this episode is the
- 0:20Speaker 1: origin of when I realized that Chuck says the word
- 0:24Speaker 1: tattoo really oddly. So enjoy it. Take care to two.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Welcome to Stuff you Should Know Reroomhouse Stuff Works dot Com. Hey,
- 0:41Speaker 1: and welcome to the podcast. I'm Josh Clark, and there's
- 0:43Speaker 1: Charles W Chuck Bryant, and Jerry's over there. So you
- 0:47Speaker 1: got the three MUCHA shows together was well, Chaos and Muchacha.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Is that right? Is Muchacha a girl? It makes sense
- 1:01Speaker 1: to be probably that's generally how worths right, Yeah, but
- 1:05Speaker 1: I also may have just made up a word in
- 1:06Speaker 1: Spanish that it could be a snack food. Anyway, this
- 1:15Speaker 1: is stuff you should know, and we want to extend
- 1:17Speaker 1: a extra hearty welcome to all the additional twelve year
- 1:21Speaker 1: old boys who are listening to this one. We want
- 1:23Speaker 1: to apologize in advance for disappointing you, because you're going
- 1:26Speaker 1: to be sorely disappointed, and I would like to insert
- 1:30Speaker 1: a quick c a okay for myself. Um, we're gonna
- 1:34Speaker 1: be talking about breast implants, and I'm gonna try not
- 1:38Speaker 1: pepper the show with my own opinions because we have
- 1:42Speaker 1: the to each his own decree here, And I'm just
- 1:46Speaker 1: gonna go ahead and say out front, I'm not into it.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I wish people would just learn to love themselves. But
- 1:50Speaker 1: I get it, And if someone feels better to do
- 1:54Speaker 1: something like this, then then that's fine. No judgment here. Yeah, Um,
- 2:00Speaker 1: who are we to judge? Yeah, it's gonna be tough
- 2:02Speaker 1: in the parts about like the string Uh what was
- 2:05Speaker 1: that one called the string implant? It's dead and gone, yeah,
- 2:09Speaker 1: but still we got to cover it. Well, you might
- 2:12Speaker 1: hear some derision in my voice, a little like, but again,
- 2:18Speaker 1: if a string implant is what uh, those women wanted
- 2:21Speaker 1: to feel better than, then you have to go to
- 2:23Speaker 1: an underground doctor to get it. Now, Well you do now, Yeah,
- 2:26Speaker 1: And of course we're gonna you know, it's not just
- 2:28Speaker 1: like just augmentation, like you know, mastectomes and men can
- 2:32Speaker 1: get breast in plants. So we're gonna cover the whole gamut. Yeah,
- 2:35Speaker 1: you're given a lot away here. People know the whole
- 2:38Speaker 1: the whole farm. People know. People are gonna they're not
- 2:41Speaker 1: gonna want to buy the cow because you just gave
- 2:43Speaker 1: them all the milk. Hey, this, this milk and the
- 2:45Speaker 1: cow are both free anyway, so let's do it. That's
- 2:49Speaker 1: my little c o A. That was good chick. Thanks. Um.
- 2:53Speaker 1: We are talking breast implants, and we are going to
- 2:56Speaker 1: explain everything there is to know about breast plants. Breast
- 3:00Speaker 1: same plants, not breast plants. That's a it's a subtropical
- 3:04Speaker 1: species of carnivorous plant um that looks like a breast.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Oh is that where it gets his name? Um? Anyway,
- 3:14Speaker 1: I want to have I have a little intro. So, um,
- 3:18Speaker 1: have you ever heard that in France the perfect breast
- 3:22Speaker 1: fits into champagne glass? I have not heard that. So
- 3:26Speaker 1: you told me this and I was like, what are
- 3:29Speaker 1: you talking about? I thought that at first two And
- 3:31Speaker 1: she's like, no, we're not a flute, you dummy, a coupe.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Because I was, I was saying that very odd of banana.
- 3:39Speaker 1: It's a weird. Yes, it would be a little weird
- 3:41Speaker 1: if that were the case, but as champagne coup. So
- 3:45Speaker 1: she looked it up and was showing it to me.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And while we were UM, while we were looking at that,
- 3:50Speaker 1: we found another axiom that was possibly even more true
- 3:54Speaker 1: that in America. Somebody commented underneath this, in America, the
- 4:00Speaker 1: of a breast cloggs a toilet doesn't fit into a
- 4:03Speaker 1: champagne coop. It cloggs a toilet. That's an axiom, it
- 4:07Speaker 1: is according to this comment or who made it up.
- 4:09Speaker 1: I did not know that. I I think the commenter
- 4:12Speaker 1: made it up as a joke, okay, and it was
- 4:14Speaker 1: a pretty funny joke if you ask me. I thought
- 4:16Speaker 1: I was going to get a bigger response from you,
- 4:18Speaker 1: but I'll live with what I got. Um. The point
- 4:23Speaker 1: is is, if in America that is the standard breast
- 4:26Speaker 1: so big that they clogged toilets, that's a pretty high
- 4:28Speaker 1: bar to set, especially naturally, which is probably why some
- 4:33Speaker 1: women turned to breast implants. Yeah, and speaking of America,
- 4:36Speaker 1: it seems like a good place for that. Um. They
- 4:39Speaker 1: topped the list in the number total number of breast
- 4:42Speaker 1: implant operations. UM. But if you want to go per capita,
- 4:46Speaker 1: there number five and the first four are Brazil, Greece, Italy,
- 4:50Speaker 1: and Colombia. Per capita, which is to me, what matters
- 4:55Speaker 1: per capita. Sure, obviously we have the most because we
- 4:59Speaker 1: have more people, right than in those other countries. I
- 5:03Speaker 1: am surprised that we're number five. I would think we'd
- 5:06Speaker 1: be higher than that. You know, it's number ten per capita.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Of course, what is that, right? Yeah, they're like comfortably
- 5:13Speaker 1: in the middle. Although no, that's still pretty high towards
- 5:16Speaker 1: the top. Although I guess it would be about in
- 5:18Speaker 1: the middle if you just did industrialized countries. So anyway,
- 5:22Speaker 1: there's my stat that's a great stat. I've got another
- 5:25Speaker 1: one for you, Chuck Um. Breast implants was the number
- 5:28Speaker 1: one elective surgery in two thousand twelve in the United States.
- 5:32Speaker 1: In two thousand eleven it was LiPo, but breast implants
- 5:36Speaker 1: breast augmentation. Um beat it out in two thousand twelve.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I don't know how many, probably by a nose, because
- 5:44Speaker 1: in two thousand eleven it was three hundred thousand and
- 5:47Speaker 1: change LiPo sections, and in two thousand and twelve there
- 5:49Speaker 1: are three hundred and thirty thousand, six hundred and eighty
- 5:52Speaker 1: one breast augmentation surgeries. In two thousand twelve, according to
- 5:58Speaker 1: the Wall Street Journal, you know that was a rhino
- 6:00Speaker 1: plastic sat that would have been a great joke by
- 6:03Speaker 1: knows By. You know, yeah, I bet that's on the
- 6:07Speaker 1: top five. Oh, I guess so sure. In fact, I
- 6:10Speaker 1: bet that's number three. There's several ways to find out,
- 6:14Speaker 1: should we know, Man, this thing is all too a
- 6:17Speaker 1: rocky start. I'm just guessing. Okay, So let's talk breast implants.
- 6:24Speaker 1: For before we talked implants, Chuck, we should probably talk
- 6:27Speaker 1: about well, you want to talk about the history of him. Yeah,
- 6:31Speaker 1: that's a good place to start. So apparently a guy,
- 6:34Speaker 1: a doctor named two doctors named Frank Garrow and Thomas
- 6:37Speaker 1: cronin Um came up with the idea. And Garrel specifically
- 6:41Speaker 1: squeezed a plastic blood bag one day and remarked how
- 6:45Speaker 1: much it felt like a breast, right, and that was
- 6:49Speaker 1: um circu Yeah, And so he had the That apparently
- 6:55Speaker 1: was the quote unquote aha moment like, hey, we should
- 6:57Speaker 1: do this. So they tried it out on a dog
- 7:00Speaker 1: named Esmerelda and uh and not obviously, you know, they
- 7:04Speaker 1: were just inserting it into a body. They weren't like, hey,
- 7:07Speaker 1: let's give this dog boobs. You know, they have always
- 7:11Speaker 1: wanted to see what boobs look like kind of dogs.
- 7:13Speaker 1: So they wanted to just see if it worked, and
- 7:16Speaker 1: it apparently it took enough to where they're like, hey,
- 7:18Speaker 1: I think we can try this on a person. Yeah,
- 7:20Speaker 1: Esmerelda chewed at our stitches, so they had to remove
- 7:22Speaker 1: it after a couple of weeks. But I mean that
- 7:25Speaker 1: they were they were. It was definitely an improvement on um,
- 7:29Speaker 1: what had been an innovation among Japanese prostitutes during World
- 7:32Speaker 1: War Two because American gis again boobs that calged a
- 7:37Speaker 1: toilet um. They apparently the Japanese prostitute said, Hey, these
- 7:43Speaker 1: guys like big boobs, let's give him big boobs. Let's
- 7:46Speaker 1: steal some medical grade silicone from the docks of Yokohama.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I thought it was sponges that that was something. They
- 7:53Speaker 1: also they self injected silicone directly into their breasts, which
- 7:58Speaker 1: apparently worked, but it also gave them things like gang
- 8:02Speaker 1: Green thinks the silicone rot At the side of injection.
- 8:05Speaker 1: There was a lot of hematomas, very bad news stuff,
- 8:10Speaker 1: but there was a It showed this desire to increase
- 8:14Speaker 1: breast size, and these guys in the early sixties came
- 8:20Speaker 1: in to deliver that's right. Uh, and they did it
- 8:23Speaker 1: in it's sort of a weird way. There was this
- 8:24Speaker 1: woman named Timmy Jean Lindsay in nine two, a mother
- 8:28Speaker 1: of six in Houston, Texas, and she had to too
- 8:33Speaker 1: of a rose vine on her breasts that her boyfriend
- 8:38Speaker 1: talked her into. Broke up with a boyfriend and was like,
- 8:41Speaker 1: I kind of really don't want this anymore. Went in
- 8:43Speaker 1: to get the two two removed and she had to
- 8:46Speaker 1: change to wino forever exactly, And um, why are you
- 8:50Speaker 1: saying to huh? I always said that it's tattoo to too.
- 8:56Speaker 1: No not I mean no, okay I And if you
- 9:00Speaker 1: say it like that again to each his own, if
- 9:02Speaker 1: you want breast implants, fine, if you want to say
- 9:04Speaker 1: to too, fine, But I couldn't just sit here and
- 9:07Speaker 1: pretend like I didn't notice that you were saying too.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I've said that plenty of times and be ignored me.
- 9:11Speaker 1: So are you sure? Yeah? Alright, alright. So anyway, she
- 9:15Speaker 1: went in to get the tattoo removed. No, no, go back,
- 9:19Speaker 1: go back to to two. I feel too guilty when
- 9:21Speaker 1: you say tattoo to get it removed and umo, and
- 9:26Speaker 1: she said that, Um, they said, hey, we got this
- 9:29Speaker 1: new thing called breast implants. Would you like to try it?
- 9:33Speaker 1: And she said, well, my ears stick out too much.
- 9:36Speaker 1: If you if you pin my ears back some, I'll
- 9:38Speaker 1: let you use me as a guinea pig. Basically, she
- 9:41Speaker 1: knows how to bargain. Yeah, and that's what happened. That's
- 9:43Speaker 1: the first breast implants were sort of a bargain like that.
- 9:47Speaker 1: She went from a bead cup to a seat cup.
- 9:50Speaker 1: That is correct. And um, this is at a time
- 9:53Speaker 1: when women wore pointy cone braws and stuff like that.
- 9:59Speaker 1: It was there was a big emphasis on big boobs.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Maryland was big. They had false ease, even like the
- 10:05Speaker 1: padded braws. Yeah, so there was, I mean, this desire
- 10:08Speaker 1: to increase your bus size and to do it permanently.
- 10:11Speaker 1: It was there and it just kind of took off
- 10:13Speaker 1: like a rocket ever since then, ever since that the
- 10:16Speaker 1: first procedures. The problem is there were all sorts of
- 10:19Speaker 1: lawsuits associated with it too, especially because they were using
- 10:23Speaker 1: medical grade silicone. Uh that's derived from silicon, which is
- 10:30Speaker 1: a mineral that apparently makes up about four of Earth's crust,
- 10:35Speaker 1: mixed with oxygen to create silicone, which is was originally
- 10:39Speaker 1: a trade name of this medical grade silicon gel um
- 10:43Speaker 1: created by GE and the early implants would rupture, and
- 10:48Speaker 1: there were a lot of lawsuits against some of the manufacturers,
- 10:51Speaker 1: specifically DOAO, who shell out like three billion in UM
- 10:55Speaker 1: in payouts in just like the course of a decade. Yeah,
- 10:59Speaker 1: and well, so you might as well go ahead and
- 11:01Speaker 1: let the cat out of the bag. They finally FDA said,
- 11:06Speaker 1: actually they they put a voluntary moratorium. They were like
- 11:10Speaker 1: basically asked, can you stop making them in doctors? Can
- 11:12Speaker 1: you stop using them? Except in certain cases? Yeah, Like
- 11:16Speaker 1: there was inconclusive studies. Basically they never found like hard
- 11:19Speaker 1: proof that it could cause illness, but um, it was enough,
- 11:23Speaker 1: I guess in conclusion to say maybe we shouldn't push
- 11:26Speaker 1: on with us. Yeah, because the when the when the
- 11:28Speaker 1: implant ruptures and it's silicone, the body absorbs the silicone,
- 11:33Speaker 1: and they're like, just there, Well, what happens to the
- 11:35Speaker 1: body after it absorbs the silicone will happen, right, So,
- 11:39Speaker 1: since no one knew, they created that moratorium. In two
- 11:42Speaker 1: thousand and six, the FDA finally said, there's no evidence
- 11:46Speaker 1: that this is bad, so you can go back to silicone.
- 11:50Speaker 1: And now silicone implants make up of the you can
- 11:53Speaker 1: get them without any special cases. Now, even in two
- 11:56Speaker 1: thousand six they lifted the moratorium. Got you because for
- 11:59Speaker 1: a while it was just like, um, if you had
- 12:01Speaker 1: a mastectomy or um, if you were willing to if
- 12:05Speaker 1: you're willing to be part of a study going on
- 12:08Speaker 1: five to ten years um. And the reason why silicone
- 12:12Speaker 1: was so popular, and the reason actually they looked at
- 12:14Speaker 1: the band ultimately, aside from the fact that they never
- 12:17Speaker 1: found any, um, real provable medical problems from it, is
- 12:22Speaker 1: that it's apparently far superior to the alternative, which is
- 12:26Speaker 1: sailing filled bags. Yeah, they say, apparently the silicone feels better,
- 12:31Speaker 1: looks better. It's just look, it's more natural looking. Apparently
- 12:34Speaker 1: it moves. Oh my god, I can't believe I just
- 12:37Speaker 1: did that. Uh, the in the sailing is just kind
- 12:40Speaker 1: of like a water filled implant. Yeah. Should we tell
- 12:43Speaker 1: everybody Josh just talking with his hands, that's all. Um. Yeah,
- 12:49Speaker 1: so this is not a video podcast, So that's okay. Alright,
- 12:52Speaker 1: So silic is back. I don't I don't think I
- 12:54Speaker 1: knew that back in a big way. Se Man. That's
- 12:58Speaker 1: a that's that's a significan again, amount of three hundred
- 13:01Speaker 1: and thirty thousand. Um. So let's talk about before we
- 13:06Speaker 1: get into like how breast implants work and how they're
- 13:09Speaker 1: inserted and all that kind of stuff, let's talk about
- 13:12Speaker 1: the breast itself. Um, the anatomy of the breast as
- 13:16Speaker 1: it Well, apparently you can break a breast down into
- 13:21Speaker 1: two different and by the way, only women have breasts.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Men don't have breasts. Um, But you can break a
- 13:28Speaker 1: breast down into two separate parts. There's the structural component
- 13:34Speaker 1: and then there's the epithelial component. That's right, and that
- 13:37Speaker 1: produces the milk. Uh. Structural component is um ligaments, fatty tissue. Um.
- 13:44Speaker 1: There are there is muscle, but not actually as a
- 13:47Speaker 1: part of the breast. It's behind the breast exactly. Yeah.
- 13:50Speaker 1: And there's a there's a ligament that kind of works
- 13:52Speaker 1: to to keep the breasts suspended supported called the Cooper's ligament. Yeah.
- 13:58Speaker 1: I looked into that guy, by the way, what is
- 14:00Speaker 1: he like? He was He was just very big on
- 14:03Speaker 1: describing anatomy in the you know, mid eighteen hundreds, and
- 14:07Speaker 1: he's got a lot of stuff named after him, a
- 14:09Speaker 1: lot of diseases, a lot of body parts, Cooper's ankle,
- 14:12Speaker 1: Cooper's ligament is one of them. It's just the ankle,
- 14:15Speaker 1: but he pointed it out exactly. Um, But yeah, that
- 14:20Speaker 1: is is They kind of called these muscles in the
- 14:23Speaker 1: ligaments sort of like a natural brazier to help keep
- 14:26Speaker 1: the breast up. UM. And then there's the milk producing
- 14:29Speaker 1: in delivery system. Milk production and delivery system, it's the
- 14:33Speaker 1: epithelial component. You've got UM. Apparently fifteen to twenty five
- 14:38Speaker 1: lobes are what they're called um and they're arranged kind
- 14:42Speaker 1: of like a flower around the center of the breast.
- 14:46Speaker 1: So if someone says your breasts are like a flower,
- 14:49Speaker 1: they're they're complimenting your lobes exactly, and that's anatomically correct. UM.
- 14:54Speaker 1: You can still smack them in the face though if
- 14:56Speaker 1: you want to. Yeah. The lobes can further be broken
- 15:00Speaker 1: down into lobules, which are kind of like clusters of grapes,
- 15:03Speaker 1: and there's a lot of these um per lobe, right uh.
- 15:07Speaker 1: And then at the end of the lobules there's dozens
- 15:11Speaker 1: Each lobule has dozens of bulbs and that's where milk
- 15:14Speaker 1: is produced. That's right. They're connected to ducks called the
- 15:18Speaker 1: lactiferrous sinus, and that carries the milk to the nipple.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Of course, the nipple surrounded by the areola, which is
- 15:24Speaker 1: that dark tissue around the nipple at the front of
- 15:28Speaker 1: the breast. And there you have it. It's breast one
- 15:32Speaker 1: on one. That's the breast, and then behind it you've
- 15:34Speaker 1: got the pectoral muscles, the major and the minor pictorialis
- 15:39Speaker 1: uh and then the rib cage behind that. So that's
- 15:42Speaker 1: the anatomy of a breast. That's right, got it? Yeah,
- 15:45Speaker 1: they are since we're talking size. Obviously with augmentation UM
- 15:50Speaker 1: it is not a scientific thing, but you generally go
- 15:52Speaker 1: by brass eyes. How they're manufactured is by a diameter
- 15:56Speaker 1: and inches around the rib cage under the breast, and
- 16:00Speaker 1: then the old letter indicating the cup size. So in
- 16:04Speaker 1: other words like uh a A or double A all
- 16:08Speaker 1: the way up to it says in the article double
- 16:10Speaker 1: D and beyond like some fantastical like alright, so now
- 16:16Speaker 1: I understand the breast ambrass eyes. Yeah, and by the way,
- 16:19Speaker 1: it's hereditary. Probably if you look at your mom and
- 16:22Speaker 1: your grandmm, it's probably what you're what you're heading towards
- 16:26Speaker 1: um later in life. Right, there are things that you
- 16:29Speaker 1: can do to to impact your breast size, positively or negatively,
- 16:34Speaker 1: depending on your opinion. Sure, weight yeah, um, some things
- 16:37Speaker 1: that you can control like um, menstruation, menopause, pregnancy, all
- 16:41Speaker 1: effect breast eyes and guys hear a lot about and
- 16:44Speaker 1: actually girls to hear a lot about this if you
- 16:47Speaker 1: have a girlfriend or a wife. Yeah, but just becomes
- 16:50Speaker 1: a common topic of conversation when you live with somebody
- 16:53Speaker 1: for long enough. Breasts. Yeah, I mean there're a thing.
- 16:56Speaker 1: They're there, they are there. Um, that's a T shirt,
- 17:02Speaker 1: it's a movie. So check. Now that we have the
- 17:06Speaker 1: anatomy of the breast, um, let's talk about breast implants themselves. Yeah,
- 17:10Speaker 1: the actual thing that has implanted. Some people might not
- 17:14Speaker 1: know this. I thought everyone knew, you know, has has
- 17:17Speaker 1: seen them before. But it's not has felt them, has
- 17:21Speaker 1: slept with them on their pillow. It's not. Uh, it's
- 17:25Speaker 1: not just like an an injection or something. It is
- 17:28Speaker 1: and there's not a pill you take. It's an actual
- 17:30Speaker 1: physical Who thought it was a pill. There's one dude
- 17:33Speaker 1: out there that thinks it's a Bill Todd. It's not
- 17:37Speaker 1: a pill. Uh. It is an actual uh sack. It
- 17:40Speaker 1: is an elastomer shell, which is an elastic polymer shell
- 17:44Speaker 1: and it is uh generally these days they are empty
- 17:49Speaker 1: at first and it's in in they're not full, although
- 17:53Speaker 1: it depends, well, it depends on what you're after all. Well,
- 17:55Speaker 1: you have the empty kind that they usually roll up
- 17:57Speaker 1: when inserting, which we'll get into, or you have the
- 18:00Speaker 1: um pre filled, which are not pre filled to their
- 18:03Speaker 1: final destination. Yeah, and they're there. Um, they're like a
- 18:08Speaker 1: certain size. They can get to a certain size. I
- 18:11Speaker 1: think those have fallen out of favor somewhat, but I'm sure. Well, yeah,
- 18:14Speaker 1: mostly they're they're not pre filled these days. Well there's
- 18:18Speaker 1: a lot of benefits to not having pre filled again,
- 18:20Speaker 1: which we'll get into a little bit. But okay, um,
- 18:22Speaker 1: the size then would not have to do with what
- 18:27Speaker 1: they're already filled with, but what they're finally going to
- 18:29Speaker 1: be filled with. And it's usually mentored measured in cubic
- 18:33Speaker 1: center leaders right, Yeah ccs ccs and one cup size
- 18:38Speaker 1: um for every hundred and seventy five to two hundred ccs.
- 18:41Speaker 1: And I guess this is where we should talk about
- 18:43Speaker 1: the rice test. Okay, um, if you want to know
- 18:48Speaker 1: what your breasts are gonna look like, or if you're
- 18:51Speaker 1: a man who always wanted to know what it would
- 18:53Speaker 1: look like if you have breasts you style, you can
- 18:58Speaker 1: um do something called the rice test. That's right, they
- 19:02Speaker 1: apparently this is the best way to tell um. You
- 19:04Speaker 1: cut a twelve inch length of panty hose, although they
- 19:07Speaker 1: say you can use like baggies or whatever, but panty
- 19:09Speaker 1: hose is probably the most realistic. Tie not in one end,
- 19:12Speaker 1: and then use a chart um which you can find online,
- 19:15Speaker 1: to basically fill with rice to estimate what you will
- 19:22Speaker 1: look and feel like. For instance, about a half a
- 19:25Speaker 1: cup is a d c cs of volume. About point
- 19:30Speaker 1: six is a D fifty season on up and you
- 19:33Speaker 1: can find the chart online. Just under three cups seven ccs.
- 19:38Speaker 1: That's a lot. That's three cups of rice um. And
- 19:42Speaker 1: remember it doubles in your stomach so you'll feel full.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Uh So they say they recommend to like, uh, put
- 19:49Speaker 1: in a sports bra where that wear it around, exercise
- 19:53Speaker 1: in it, run errands, do whatever you normally might do
- 19:55Speaker 1: to get the look in the feel of like, hey,
- 19:58Speaker 1: this is what I'm gonna look and feel like? And
- 20:00Speaker 1: you know, should I continue? Should I not? As too big?
- 20:04Speaker 1: Are they too small? As the grocery store clerk who's
- 20:07Speaker 1: checking you out. They're fine, ma'am everybody. Well, they also
- 20:12Speaker 1: say you can use water, um, instant mashed potatoes and
- 20:15Speaker 1: oatmeal instead of rice. I could see instant mashed potatoes
- 20:20Speaker 1: being really good, because aren't they like flaky it's flaky potatoes.
- 20:24Speaker 1: I could see that rice is that's I mean, that's hard. Yeah,
- 20:28Speaker 1: that's true, but you should call it the instant mashed
- 20:31Speaker 1: potato test. I think that's why they didn't. So anyway,
- 20:34Speaker 1: that's apparently how you uh, and it's obviously you want
- 20:37Speaker 1: to work with your doctor two um kind of like singles.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Remember that movie when Bridget find It goes in for
- 20:43Speaker 1: breast implants and Bill Pullman essentially talks her out of it.
- 20:47Speaker 1: I forgot that part. Yeah, but you're gonna do that.
- 20:50Speaker 1: You're gonna work with your doctor on appropriate sizing. Yeah,
- 20:53Speaker 1: it's not gonna be like weird science, you know, where
- 20:55Speaker 1: you just like click on the mouth until tremendous and large,
- 21:00Speaker 1: um with some eighties graph behind it. But you want it.
- 21:05Speaker 1: You just want an appropriate size for your frame basically,
- 21:07Speaker 1: because not only just for looks, but for you know,
- 21:10Speaker 1: can you support it with your body frame? Well? Yeah,
- 21:13Speaker 1: that weight, not just that, I mean not just like
- 21:16Speaker 1: the extra pressure that's gonna be put on your back
- 21:18Speaker 1: and shoulders and all that, but I mean like your
- 21:21Speaker 1: your skin itself may have trouble supporting the breast implants,
- 21:24Speaker 1: which is definitely something to consider as well. Yeah, and
- 21:26Speaker 1: this article says generally they come in three sizes, but
- 21:29Speaker 1: there that's just not true. There's like four and fifty sizes. Well,
- 21:32Speaker 1: I like this article is right, and I think in
- 21:34Speaker 1: two thousand three or four, and I mean it's definitely
- 21:37Speaker 1: breast implant breast augmentation surgery has increased by leaps and
- 21:41Speaker 1: bounds since then. Um, I've seen up to four and
- 21:44Speaker 1: fifty different varieties and I think that's combinations of shape, size,
- 21:49Speaker 1: that kind of thing. But yeah, there's a lot of
- 21:51Speaker 1: different sizes. Um, mainly the sizes again it has to
- 21:57Speaker 1: do it's measured in ccs. The shape. There's still typically
- 22:01Speaker 1: just two shapes that I ran across. Yeah, there's round
- 22:05Speaker 1: and then there's a tear drop, which is also called contour. Yeah. Yeah,
- 22:08Speaker 1: and basically one the round. I guess it depends when
- 22:12Speaker 1: you're talking to They can be more popular in that
- 22:13Speaker 1: there fuller and uh, there's more cleavage and there's more lift,
- 22:19Speaker 1: but they don't look as real. The tear drop shape
- 22:23Speaker 1: mimic the anatomy of a natural woman's breast. More so,
- 22:27Speaker 1: some women might favor those if you want to look
- 22:29Speaker 1: more natural. Right, Um, but round is the most commonly used,
- 22:34Speaker 1: I believe. Well, I don't know if it still is.
- 22:37Speaker 1: I take an issue with that, Okay, I think that's
- 22:40Speaker 1: a two thousand three statement. Um. Again, though it has
- 22:44Speaker 1: to do with what what shape you choose, you know,
- 22:49Speaker 1: not just what you want how you wanted to look.
- 22:52Speaker 1: But I mean the surgeon needs to have some input
- 22:55Speaker 1: here too. Yeah. And if you get a good surgeon,
- 22:57Speaker 1: they're gonna guide you in the right direction. You know that.
- 22:59Speaker 1: That's their part of the job. It's not just to
- 23:01Speaker 1: perform the surgery. It's the consultation and advice and all
- 23:05Speaker 1: that good stuffy um. And since they're plastic surgeons, to
- 23:08Speaker 1: look good doing it. Yeah, And if they're not doing that,
- 23:11Speaker 1: that means it's a bad plastic surgeon. Did you see
- 23:14Speaker 1: Rob Low in Liberacia? Man? Well is there are some
- 23:19Speaker 1: real decisions made for his character and his look and
- 23:23Speaker 1: this well that's what that guy looked like, Is that right? Yeah, yeah,
- 23:26Speaker 1: I look at my ps. He was creepy looking. I will,
- 23:29Speaker 1: I will is he still alive? Because I'm so sorry
- 23:31Speaker 1: for what Chuck just said. I don't know, um, but
- 23:34Speaker 1: yeah that was plastic surgery. Gon'm bad for sure. Yeah. Uh.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Texture is another decision that you're going to have to
- 23:40Speaker 1: make in addition to shape and size and um. Basically
- 23:44Speaker 1: there's smooth and there's textured and um. Each has their
- 23:48Speaker 1: pros and their cons um textured implants. We should say
- 23:52Speaker 1: when you when you have breast surgery, something UM that's
- 23:55Speaker 1: gonna happen is scar tissue is going to develop no
- 23:58Speaker 1: matter what. Anytime you introduce foreign object into your body,
- 24:01Speaker 1: your body basically defends the rest of your body against
- 24:04Speaker 1: it by forming scar tissue around it and basically compartmentalizing it. UM.
- 24:09Speaker 1: And in the case of breast augmentation surgery, this is
- 24:12Speaker 1: called a capsular contracture. And it's gonna happen. Don't be
- 24:16Speaker 1: freaked out if it happens, because it's gonna happen. It's
- 24:18Speaker 1: just the degree to which it happens could become problematic. Right.
- 24:21Speaker 1: And there's there's post post implant surgeries that can take
- 24:26Speaker 1: place to remove some of the excess scar tissue if
- 24:29Speaker 1: too much happens or your breasts become too hard as
- 24:31Speaker 1: a result. But you're right, it is going to happen.
- 24:34Speaker 1: And um, some implants have been created to I guess,
- 24:38Speaker 1: make the most out of this. Textured implants are designed
- 24:42Speaker 1: so that the scar tissue basically grips the implant and
- 24:44Speaker 1: holds it in place. Yeah. And I also got the
- 24:47Speaker 1: idea too that less scar tissue will form because it
- 24:50Speaker 1: sticks to the implant. I guess the body just thinks, Okay,
- 24:54Speaker 1: this is working. My job is done exactly. Um. There
- 24:59Speaker 1: are some drawback the texture and implants. Apparently they're not
- 25:02Speaker 1: quite as realistic in their movement. Look feel that kind
- 25:05Speaker 1: of thing, yea, and they're more likely to rupture too, yes,
- 25:08Speaker 1: which is not good. Smooth implants. Um. They actually will
- 25:13Speaker 1: move around inside the capsular contractor the scar tissue sac
- 25:19Speaker 1: that um that develops um, which is good for look field.
- 25:24Speaker 1: It's much more natural. The problem is is that since
- 25:28Speaker 1: they can move around, if you have something like a
- 25:31Speaker 1: if you choose a contour or tear drop shape breast implant,
- 25:35Speaker 1: if that thing flips upside down, your breast looks to
- 25:37Speaker 1: forb Now you have a problem, yeah, or it can
- 25:40Speaker 1: cause something called rippling, which we'll get into the problems
- 25:43Speaker 1: that can arise later on. Um, And there's this lady
- 25:46Speaker 1: in Akron actually, Ohio, it's probably good time to mention
- 25:49Speaker 1: that she is trying to develop a breast implant that actually,
- 25:54Speaker 1: um well, it can accomplish a lot of things. Is
- 25:57Speaker 1: she calls it the breast implant of the future. It
- 25:59Speaker 1: can emit basically the drugs that they give people, orally
- 26:04Speaker 1: she is trying to build into the implant itself to
- 26:08Speaker 1: emit these drugs naturally. And she thinks one day breast
- 26:13Speaker 1: implants can be can actually detect cancer cells if her researches.
- 26:18Speaker 1: You know, if she gets to that point, if I
- 26:20Speaker 1: have the funding, especially she's looking too many but the
- 26:24Speaker 1: breast implant in the future, I just need the fund
- 26:26Speaker 1: But um yeah, she's she's she's working hard to try
- 26:29Speaker 1: and reduce things like the inflammatory response and scar tissue,
- 26:33Speaker 1: building it into the breast implant itself, which is pretty cool,
- 26:36Speaker 1: I think. And then Chuck, we kind of already talked
- 26:38Speaker 1: about it. But another choice is whether you're gonna have
- 26:40Speaker 1: pre filled or unfilled or also known as expandable that's right, umpt. Yeah.
- 26:48Speaker 1: The spectrum Expandable is sort of like a test drive
- 26:51Speaker 1: almost where you have the implant put in, there is
- 26:55Speaker 1: a three part valve system in your armpit where you
- 27:01Speaker 1: actually can fill and release and extract some of the
- 27:06Speaker 1: sailing or I guess silicone. I don't know if they
- 27:08Speaker 1: can do that for silicone. I know they can, can
- 27:12Speaker 1: it's Joel, I think you can. Yes, Well, basically it's
- 27:15Speaker 1: like a test drive. They put it in and they
- 27:16Speaker 1: can make them larger or smaller through your armpit until
- 27:20Speaker 1: you're satisfied. It's kind of like doing the rice test,
- 27:22Speaker 1: but a couple of steps further more than a couple
- 27:25Speaker 1: because you're out there walking around saying what do you think? Yeah,
- 27:29Speaker 1: and you've got a port in your armpit right, But
- 27:31Speaker 1: then after you say this is it? This is the
- 27:33Speaker 1: right size, they removed the port. So obviously there's a
- 27:36Speaker 1: bunch of choices, and you, the patient, the person who
- 27:39Speaker 1: is getting the breast implant, have a lot of things
- 27:42Speaker 1: to decide. But then once you've decided all that, it's
- 27:45Speaker 1: up to the surgeon to make some another series of decisions.
- 27:49Speaker 1: And we'll get into the procedure right after this message. Alright,
- 27:59Speaker 1: so back to it. Let's talk surgery. Huh yes, UM,
- 28:04Speaker 1: all right. The most important thing they say with the
- 28:07Speaker 1: breast implant is not all the other decisions you've made
- 28:10Speaker 1: up into this point. It really is. It's the skill
- 28:15Speaker 1: of your surgeon with the placement of the implant. Yeah,
- 28:18Speaker 1: because that's where things will generally go wrong. And there
- 28:20Speaker 1: are three choices, uh, subglandular, sub pectoral, and submuscular. And again,
- 28:27Speaker 1: like with everything else, their advantages and disadvantages to all three. Um.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Sub glandular is behind the mammary gland in front of
- 28:35Speaker 1: the muscle. Um, it's the least complicated. You're going to
- 28:38Speaker 1: get out of there and recover quicker. Um. It's if
- 28:41Speaker 1: you're athletic. It's probably has some advantages, but um, you
- 28:45Speaker 1: have an increased chance for that capsular contractor we're talking about.
- 28:49Speaker 1: You might be able to see it sometimes, which is
- 28:51Speaker 1: not good. Yeah. And it's more vulnerable because it's just
- 28:55Speaker 1: kind of right there behind the skin. Plus also there's um,
- 28:59Speaker 1: very little besides the ada post the fatty tissue holding
- 29:02Speaker 1: it in place. UM, so it can produce that rippling thing,
- 29:06Speaker 1: which is a sagging that produces basically UM what's that called,
- 29:11Speaker 1: like on your skin when you when you gain weight
- 29:15Speaker 1: and then lose it. I don't know, stretch marks. Oh yeah,
- 29:18Speaker 1: it looks kind of like that, but I think they're deeper, okay.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Um sub pectrol's next subpectrol is so you remember at
- 29:26Speaker 1: the back between the ada posts, uh and the chest wall,
- 29:31Speaker 1: you've got your two pectoral muscles. Um, the one in
- 29:35Speaker 1: front the bigger the two. The pectorialis major um is
- 29:40Speaker 1: goes in front of the implant, and the pectorialis minor
- 29:43Speaker 1: goes behind it. So it's sort of sandwiched in the
- 29:46Speaker 1: middle there. Yeah. You you have to cut the muscle,
- 29:49Speaker 1: put the implant in between them, and then lay it
- 29:51Speaker 1: back down. Yeah, and it is. Um. It's gonna reduce
- 29:54Speaker 1: the risk of that capsular contractor and the rippling, which
- 29:58Speaker 1: is good. Uh, but of course your recovery time is
- 30:01Speaker 1: gonna be a little bit longer. It's gonna be a
- 30:02Speaker 1: little more painful. Anytime they're manipulating muscle, it's gonna be
- 30:07Speaker 1: pretty painful. There's gonna be more swelling and stuff like that. Um.
- 30:11Speaker 1: The implant can also kind of droop. There's still a
- 30:14Speaker 1: risk that it's gonna pull down because there's it's held
- 30:18Speaker 1: in place more than it is with the subglandular um,
- 30:22Speaker 1: but less than the submuscular. This is if you want
- 30:25Speaker 1: your implant to not sag, you want to go with
- 30:28Speaker 1: the submuscular. The third type, Yeah, that is behind fully
- 30:32Speaker 1: behind the chest muscle wall and um. It has some
- 30:36Speaker 1: great advantages, like it doesn't get in the way of mammograms,
- 30:39Speaker 1: which is a big deal. It's a big consideration for sure. Yeah,
- 30:42Speaker 1: silicone and salien implants um placed in front of or
- 30:46Speaker 1: between the muscles can mess with mammograms. And you need
- 30:49Speaker 1: to tell by the way. I'm sure you probably know
- 30:51Speaker 1: this if you have breast implants, but you should always
- 30:53Speaker 1: tell your doctor, you know, if they don't know when
- 30:57Speaker 1: you go to get a mammogram, because they have different
- 31:00Speaker 1: eaters and techniques that they can like work around and stuff. Yes,
- 31:04Speaker 1: so those are the three types of three implant locations. Yeah,
- 31:08Speaker 1: and the recovery for the last one is even longer,
- 31:11Speaker 1: but has the same complications as a subpect rule, anytime
- 31:14Speaker 1: you have to in size muscle and manually adjust it,
- 31:20Speaker 1: you're gonna have a recovery time involved. That's true. Man,
- 31:23Speaker 1: it's gotta hurt. Um should we talk about. We've got
- 31:28Speaker 1: to talk about the polypropylene real quick, just because even
- 31:31Speaker 1: though it's not around anymore, the string implant, Yeah yeah,
- 31:35Speaker 1: it was developed by a guy, a doctor named Dr
- 31:39Speaker 1: Gerald W. Johnson. And um, the quote from this article
- 31:43Speaker 1: says it was designed to yield extreme, almost cartoonish breast sizes.
- 31:48Speaker 1: And um it basically the pop polypropylene um absorbed fluid
- 31:54Speaker 1: over like constantly over time, and the breast never stopped growing.
- 31:58Speaker 1: And um it has been banned since two thousand one
- 32:02Speaker 1: by the f d A. And although they say it
- 32:05Speaker 1: was very popular among adult entertainers for a while. And um,
- 32:09Speaker 1: yeah it's this is where I get a little judge.
- 32:12Speaker 1: It's really weird looking. Oh you saw pictures. Yeah, and uh,
- 32:18Speaker 1: I don't get it at all. Is it cartoonish? Yeah,
- 32:22Speaker 1: very much? So yeah, um it's okay. That's my only judgment. Yeah,
- 32:27Speaker 1: recent judgment is I don't get that one. Researching this article,
- 32:30Speaker 1: I wanted to be like, I'm researching breast implants. I'm
- 32:32Speaker 1: not agreed. People walk by your desk. Um, so chuck,
- 32:36Speaker 1: let's talk. Let's talk procedure. We're we're in the operating room.
- 32:41Speaker 1: All the decisions have been made. Uh, preop has been done,
- 32:44Speaker 1: prep um, and the surgeon is going to start by
- 32:48Speaker 1: making an incision. And um, there's really basically four types
- 32:53Speaker 1: of incisions that are favored among breast on augmentation procedures. Yeah,
- 33:00Speaker 1: you've got the peri areolar, which is apparently one of
- 33:03Speaker 1: the most common ones. But to me, it's seems spectacularly
- 33:09Speaker 1: has It's like there's a lot of room for complications.
- 33:13Speaker 1: You think, yeah, what they're doing, I look this up.
- 33:17Speaker 1: The the article isn't through this justice. The incision is
- 33:20Speaker 1: made at where the areola, which is where the it's
- 33:23Speaker 1: the brown tissue that surrounds the nipple. Okay, so um,
- 33:28Speaker 1: it's it's where the areola meets the regular um colored
- 33:33Speaker 1: pigmented skin of the breast um. But the whole areola
- 33:39Speaker 1: is cut and pulled out and then the um the
- 33:44Speaker 1: using a sterile sleeve wrapped around it. The implant is
- 33:48Speaker 1: put in through that hole in the front of the
- 33:50Speaker 1: breast and then unrolled in the sleeve is removed. Um.
- 33:55Speaker 1: But you're going around the milk ducks and the all
- 33:59Speaker 1: of the epithelial system of the breast. It just seems
- 34:03Speaker 1: like you're you're exposing some really important stuff. Um to
- 34:07Speaker 1: a lot of potential damage, you know, either mechanical or
- 34:12Speaker 1: through infection or whatever. It just don't see much reason
- 34:15Speaker 1: aside from the fact that it uh it's very difficult
- 34:18Speaker 1: to see the scar because you're doing it where the
- 34:21Speaker 1: pigmentation changes, so it's hard to see that difference in
- 34:25Speaker 1: that that scar. Yeah. Well it also allows for more
- 34:28Speaker 1: precise placement of the implant. I see that, and um,
- 34:32Speaker 1: I think it's you know, there's there surge surgeons doing this.
- 34:35Speaker 1: It's not you, So I know it freaks you out,
- 34:38Speaker 1: but I think it's the most common for a reason. Um,
- 34:42Speaker 1: that's one. Yeah, but that allows for subglandular, subpectral uh,
- 34:46Speaker 1: and submuscular placement. So that's the other advantages. You have
- 34:50Speaker 1: all your options open. Yeah. Um, there's also the inframamary
- 34:54Speaker 1: fold incision. This one makes sense. Yeah. That also allows
- 34:58Speaker 1: for all three um placement types. And that is that
- 35:02Speaker 1: is just under the breast, So the scarring is you know,
- 35:07Speaker 1: not as visible obviously. Yeah. Usually it's where the creases. Yeah.
- 35:10Speaker 1: The big disadvantage to this one is if you are
- 35:12Speaker 1: going up so much in in cup size. Um, if
- 35:18Speaker 1: you're going up a lot, the surgeon is going to
- 35:19Speaker 1: have to create a new crease for your breast, and
- 35:22Speaker 1: when making that incision, since you want the incision underneath
- 35:26Speaker 1: the breast, the breast hidden by the breast um, he
- 35:31Speaker 1: has to guess where that breast is going to hang
- 35:33Speaker 1: now and make the initial incision accordingly. Yeah, that's when
- 35:37Speaker 1: it's work there, well, not guess work, but because that
- 35:41Speaker 1: makes it sound like well education, that looks good. Well
- 35:45Speaker 1: now he has to be like, where is this going
- 35:46Speaker 1: to forecasting? Yeah? Educated, yeah, very educated, guess so. Um.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Then there's transaxilary incision, which is through the armpit. Yeah,
- 35:57Speaker 1: there's no breast scarring at all obviously. Um, it's more
- 36:00Speaker 1: of a challenge because placement is pretty difficult. Um, they
- 36:05Speaker 1: use an endo scope and that is not the most Uh,
- 36:10Speaker 1: that's not the strangest place. No strange places. Through the
- 36:13Speaker 1: old belly button, the TUBA incision, you can actually get
- 36:16Speaker 1: a breast implant through your belly button. Yeah, and apparently
- 36:19Speaker 1: you can get a lot of surgeries through your belly button.
- 36:21Speaker 1: I think maybe that's why it's there. Um, maybe that's
- 36:25Speaker 1: it's the new port. Yeah. Um. TUBA stands for transumbilical
- 36:29Speaker 1: breast augmentation. Then that's a tuba incision, the belly button incision,
- 36:34Speaker 1: and um, basically they cut into the navel at the
- 36:38Speaker 1: top at the ridge and then go they burrow all
- 36:41Speaker 1: the way up to each breast, so it makes a
- 36:44Speaker 1: V through your subcutaneous fat like Charles Bronson in The
- 36:47Speaker 1: Great Escape. Yeah, and then yes, and then they use
- 36:52Speaker 1: um uh an end of scope to basically tunnel their
- 36:57Speaker 1: way through and see that they're going the right way,
- 36:59Speaker 1: and they push the implant up through there and inflated. Yeah. Yeah,
- 37:04Speaker 1: that sounds like guesswork. Yes, but apparently that's the one
- 37:07Speaker 1: that has the least complications. Yeah. There are a lot
- 37:11Speaker 1: of limitations though, Um it requires an inflatable implant. Obviously,
- 37:16Speaker 1: you can't go through the belly button with one that's
- 37:17Speaker 1: already inflated. Um. It can only be used for subpectrol
- 37:21Speaker 1: and submuscular And if there are complications, and it seems
- 37:27Speaker 1: like there are, I don't want I don't know if
- 37:29Speaker 1: I should say often, but it's not rare to have
- 37:33Speaker 1: complications and have to go back and have um what
- 37:36Speaker 1: they call a revision surgery. You cannot reuse that incision. No,
- 37:41Speaker 1: they're gonna have to make um transaxillary, periariolar or inframamary fold. Yeah,
- 37:49Speaker 1: if they need to go back in again. And um,
- 37:52Speaker 1: apparently it's pretty rare, Like, not a lot of plastic
- 37:55Speaker 1: surgeons even try this one. I think it takes a
- 37:57Speaker 1: lot of skill. And even though the comp occasions, the
- 38:00Speaker 1: post stop complications are minimal compared to the others because
- 38:04Speaker 1: you're subcutaneous fat and your abdomen apparently heals very easily. Um,
- 38:09Speaker 1: just getting there is kind of a problem. So let's
- 38:13Speaker 1: say your doctor's ready, you got the first incision. Um,
- 38:18Speaker 1: what's up next? Uh, well, you've got your incision, and
- 38:20Speaker 1: so they have to cut a path through that tissue um,
- 38:25Speaker 1: depending on which one you use. They're either gonna work
- 38:27Speaker 1: with the muscle or they're not. And they need to
- 38:30Speaker 1: separate and create a little pocket for it to sit in.
- 38:32Speaker 1: You know, they don't just stuff it in there. They
- 38:35Speaker 1: need to create a space and they have to figure
- 38:37Speaker 1: out where that pocket is best going to be, depending
- 38:40Speaker 1: on the size, shape, everything of the breast implant. Again
- 38:43Speaker 1: an educated guess, yes, And you've seen some surgery nightmares
- 38:48Speaker 1: with breast augmentation, and that's like Dr Quack, you know,
- 38:52Speaker 1: Dr Nick it's good about there. UM. Sometimes UM mast
- 39:00Speaker 1: up master PEXI, which is a breast lift, is performed
- 39:05Speaker 1: at the same time, or you can just have that
- 39:07Speaker 1: on its own if you just want a breast lift.
- 39:09Speaker 1: But sometimes it's used with augmentation in order to get
- 39:13Speaker 1: everything in the right position and you want, you know,
- 39:17Speaker 1: the breast to be pointing in the right way, and
- 39:18Speaker 1: you want the nipples in the arrow aerial is to
- 39:21Speaker 1: be in the proper place and not looking off to
- 39:24Speaker 1: the left and the right up or down. Some surgeries
- 39:27Speaker 1: require that you reposition the nipple depending on how big
- 39:30Speaker 1: the implant is going to be. Yeah, and man I
- 39:32Speaker 1: saw with some mastectomy surgery. Sometimes they can completely remove
- 39:36Speaker 1: the areola and nipple and replace it onto a uh
- 39:42Speaker 1: augmentation or yeah, I guess with a periolar incision, if
- 39:46Speaker 1: you're taking that whole thing off, you know, I guess
- 39:50Speaker 1: you could move it to another place. What they can
- 39:53Speaker 1: do UM sizers can aid in positioning, and that's sort
- 39:57Speaker 1: of like it's attached to a tube. It's an implant
- 40:00Speaker 1: attached to tube, and that's that's almost like a live
- 40:04Speaker 1: rice test, Like you don't go home with that. They
- 40:07Speaker 1: just put it in there. And mid operation. Yeah, and
- 40:09Speaker 1: see what it looks like, not the final implanted, temporary
- 40:12Speaker 1: and then they pull that out once they say all right,
- 40:14Speaker 1: that's a good placement for this, so just let me
- 40:16Speaker 1: do it for real. Um. And then so if you
- 40:20Speaker 1: have pre filled implants, you have to make a larger
- 40:23Speaker 1: incision of course, and then you fill those up to
- 40:26Speaker 1: their full um volume. And I think prefilled textures textured
- 40:31Speaker 1: is even the largest. That's the biggest incision you're gonna
- 40:34Speaker 1: because you know, yeah, you also have to make room
- 40:36Speaker 1: for this ridged implant that's already pre filled um. And
- 40:41Speaker 1: either way you're gonna have to either top off or
- 40:43Speaker 1: totally fill up this the implant once it's in there,
- 40:46Speaker 1: top it off. That's pretty much what it is, So
- 40:49Speaker 1: chuck um, we're talking augmentation. It's elective surgery, plastic surgery.
- 40:54Speaker 1: And a lot of people think like plastic surgery is
- 40:57Speaker 1: called plastic surgery because it's artificiality, right, But actually it's
- 41:01Speaker 1: derived from the original Greek plastic hosts, which means uh, artificiality.
- 41:08Speaker 1: It means to mold or shape something's plastic, it's pliable. Yeah,
- 41:12Speaker 1: and that's what that's what plastic surgeons do say, mold
- 41:16Speaker 1: or shape things, including breasts. It's it's like you said,
- 41:20Speaker 1: it's not just making the cut and jamming the thing
- 41:23Speaker 1: in there. They have to um, basically reconfigure what the
- 41:29Speaker 1: the anatomy of the breast to to accept this new um.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, um. And it does take a certain amount
- 41:37Speaker 1: of skill, but that's that destruct me as interesting. Yeah.
- 41:41Speaker 1: They call it plastic surgery, and it's not all just
- 41:43Speaker 1: augmentation doesn't always mean you're making your breast larger. There's
- 41:49Speaker 1: also reduction mammoplastic, which is breast reduction. If you feel
- 41:54Speaker 1: like you're too big and you have back problems or
- 41:56Speaker 1: for any other reason, you can get breast reduction. We
- 42:00Speaker 1: already talked about the mast aplexi, which is the breast lift,
- 42:03Speaker 1: and that's when they actually remove skin and rejoin it
- 42:07Speaker 1: to lift it up. It's pretty simple. Actually, I wouldn't
- 42:10Speaker 1: want to perform it, I'm saying, but in uh, what's
- 42:15Speaker 1: the word concept, it's pretty simple, right, um. And then
- 42:18Speaker 1: breast reconstruction UM. A lot of times, if your breasts
- 42:22Speaker 1: have been removed for mostectomy or damaged and you know,
- 42:26Speaker 1: because of some accident or something, they can actually reconstruct
- 42:29Speaker 1: your breasts in a realistic fashion, right, and uh, we
- 42:33Speaker 1: said women aren't the only are the only um humans
- 42:36Speaker 1: that have breasts, But there are um electric procedures for
- 42:40Speaker 1: men who want to bulk up their pecks called pectoral implants.
- 42:45Speaker 1: And what did you watch Entourage? Johnny dropped like, I
- 42:50Speaker 1: don't think he got him, but he wanted caffeine plants
- 42:52Speaker 1: at one point. I've heard of those. Yeah, caffe implants.
- 42:56Speaker 1: Uh yeah, pec implants. Come on, Um see I can
- 43:01Speaker 1: judge guys. What are you doing dudes? So well, well,
- 43:05Speaker 1: well that's we'll see what we're doing. Um. The arm
- 43:07Speaker 1: it's done with an armpin incision. It's a lot like
- 43:09Speaker 1: the trans axillary breast implant, thank for women. And they
- 43:13Speaker 1: go in there and lodge it behind the peck muscles
- 43:15Speaker 1: to just kind of bulk them up to stick them
- 43:17Speaker 1: out further. Um, and there you go, all of a sudden,
- 43:20Speaker 1: you are Charles Atlas. Yeah. Or you can have reduction
- 43:22Speaker 1: as a man too, if you're Bob from Fight Club. Yeah, yeah,
- 43:26Speaker 1: that's right. Um kind of because because maastia, um, it's
- 43:32Speaker 1: usually hereditary. It can be as a result of your diet,
- 43:35Speaker 1: but basically it's when guys end up feeling like they
- 43:38Speaker 1: have boobs and I feel like or do yeah, and
- 43:42Speaker 1: it's it's an embarrassing thing. I'm sure. So you can
- 43:44Speaker 1: get that removed. It's basically um bypo suction just under
- 43:48Speaker 1: the nipple, right, And if it's the result of a
- 43:50Speaker 1: glandular disorder, they'll probably just take the glands out while
- 43:54Speaker 1: they're there. And usually it takes more than one surgery,
- 43:56Speaker 1: but it can be corrected. What if insurance covers that?
- 44:02Speaker 1: I don't know. Does insurance cover any kind of plastic surgery?
- 44:06Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't I bet you wouldn't cover
- 44:08Speaker 1: that because it's still cosmetic, you know, I don't know.
- 44:14Speaker 1: I mean, I think you probably have to show the
- 44:15Speaker 1: medical problem, right, but I think you can if you
- 44:18Speaker 1: show that you're suffering from it psychologically, it might fall
- 44:22Speaker 1: under it. I don't know. We'll find out, because I'll
- 44:25Speaker 1: bet you an insurance claims adjuster writes in and tells
- 44:29Speaker 1: us that's my prediction. And you know what, I was
- 44:32Speaker 1: judging on the peck implants for there maybe uh cases
- 44:36Speaker 1: I don't know about where guys have sort of like
- 44:38Speaker 1: malform chest or something and they just want to look normal. Yeah,
- 44:41Speaker 1: I was talking about the guys who are like still
- 44:47Speaker 1: judging hit the gym man, do h some bench press?
- 44:51Speaker 1: You know, you want to increase your packs. So yeah,
- 44:57Speaker 1: push ups. Let's talk. Let's give me sit on your
- 44:59Speaker 1: back and do pushops one one handed mershell walker style. Yeah.
- 45:03Speaker 1: Supposedly he never lifted weights. Did you never know that? No? Yeah,
- 45:06Speaker 1: he never lifted weights in his life. Everything he had
- 45:09Speaker 1: people sit on and do push like two thousand push
- 45:12Speaker 1: ups a day and stuff like that. It was all
- 45:14Speaker 1: either isometrics or like chin ups, push ups, pull ups. Uh,
- 45:19Speaker 1: rolling a attractive tire exactly old school. Let's talk risks, man,
- 45:25Speaker 1: because this is uh, this is first of all, it's surgery.
- 45:27Speaker 1: So there's always an attendant risk with any kind of
- 45:29Speaker 1: surgery where general anesthesia is used. Right, it sounds like
- 45:33Speaker 1: a disclaimer. Well, it's true. I mean surgeries. Surgery is risky. Um. Well,
- 45:37Speaker 1: anesthesia is risky. Um. There's also infection. Anytime you're cut open,
- 45:43Speaker 1: there's a risk of infection. But then breast augmentation surgery
- 45:47Speaker 1: comes with its own attendance set of risks that are um,
- 45:51Speaker 1: they vary from definitely gonna happen, like the capsule contractor Yeah,
- 45:57Speaker 1: this scar tissue to extraordinarily rare like semastia. Yes, did
- 46:05Speaker 1: you see this? I did? It was I had no
- 46:07Speaker 1: idea that it could happen. Semastia is basically where your
- 46:11Speaker 1: breasts joined together as the result of an augmentation surgery
- 46:15Speaker 1: and you have one mega breast. Yeah. Um, I have
- 46:19Speaker 1: seen something that make braziers now, like post surgical braziers
- 46:22Speaker 1: and try and yeah that try and prevent that. Um.
- 46:26Speaker 1: But yeah, I've never heard of that either. I guess
- 46:28Speaker 1: they so after surgery, do they just kind of gravitate
- 46:31Speaker 1: towards one another? Um? Actually, I'm not sure. It just
- 46:36Speaker 1: says it. It's it's a mistake. So it's not like
- 46:40Speaker 1: some just bad you know, bad fortune. It's actual surgical mistake.
- 46:44Speaker 1: You get to own a portion of the doctor's office
- 46:48Speaker 1: that But yeah, the implants lift off the tournam and
- 46:52Speaker 1: grow together. So um, I guess the scar tissue grows
- 46:55Speaker 1: together in that case. That's my guess. It's kind of
- 46:57Speaker 1: like a unibrow made of breasts. But apparently it's fairly
- 47:01Speaker 1: hard to correct, is the big problem. Yeah, that's that's
- 47:06Speaker 1: pretty sad when you go in to try and make
- 47:07Speaker 1: yourself look better. And you feel bad about yourself already
- 47:10Speaker 1: maybe and then you end up like with something like this.
- 47:13Speaker 1: But these are risk you need to know about, you know.
- 47:14Speaker 1: And that is the opposite of the total recall, which
- 47:17Speaker 1: is three breasts. Yeah, remember that I forgot about that man.
- 47:21Speaker 1: That was a great movie. I wonder if they put
- 47:23Speaker 1: that in the remake because that was one of the
- 47:25Speaker 1: sort of goofy signature moments of that goofy movie. Yeah,
- 47:29Speaker 1: that was you know, it's a Philip K. Dick novel. Yeah,
- 47:33Speaker 1: I wrote like all sci fi basically. Yeah, pretty much
- 47:37Speaker 1: any sci fi movie ever was written by Philip K. Dick.
- 47:39Speaker 1: Did you know that he believes he was possessed by
- 47:42Speaker 1: an angel later on in his life? Really, yeah, he
- 47:45Speaker 1: came to he he believed that he was possessed by
- 47:49Speaker 1: a benevolent spirit that basically took him from being like
- 47:53Speaker 1: a complete shlub, drug addict loser who still wrote great
- 47:58Speaker 1: novels to just becoming like a person with a fairly normal,
- 48:03Speaker 1: orderly life. Uh, he cleaned himself up. He attributed it,
- 48:07Speaker 1: all of it to this possession that said, this happened
- 48:10Speaker 1: and that was the rest of his life. They should
- 48:13Speaker 1: make a movie about that guy. I'm just kind of
- 48:15Speaker 1: surprised they haven't, but someone does. Eventually he's here and
- 48:18Speaker 1: then because it was my idea. Yeah, you can't just
- 48:21Speaker 1: say that every time. It's got to be like your idea,
- 48:25Speaker 1: a good idea, not obvious memories. And I know everyone
- 48:31Speaker 1: agrees with shark, but that's like saying they should make
- 48:34Speaker 1: a modern movie on Charles Darwin. Right, I made that
- 48:37Speaker 1: up right, you can't do that. I'm not going to
- 48:39Speaker 1: support your lawsuit against two ever makes the Philip K.
- 48:42Speaker 1: Dick movie because now you're having a depressing effect on innovation. Yeah,
- 48:50Speaker 1: you're right, I apologize everyone, alright. So bottoming out, let's
- 48:54Speaker 1: get back to the risks. Um. Bottoming out is when
- 48:58Speaker 1: the implants sit too low, the nipple rides too high,
- 49:02Speaker 1: and that is a result of another mistake. Basically, they
- 49:06Speaker 1: cut out too large of a pocket, so it sits
- 49:08Speaker 1: down too low. It is correctible though again with a
- 49:11Speaker 1: revision surgery. Yeah, there's a humatoma, which is basically blood
- 49:16Speaker 1: collecting and pulling around it um. It can be painful,
- 49:19Speaker 1: requires drainage, sometimes can be lumpy. Yeah, we talked about
- 49:24Speaker 1: mammography being interfered with by breast implants, which is a problem,
- 49:29Speaker 1: but I guess they're kind of there is technology then
- 49:32Speaker 1: that you came across that, Yeah, as long as they know,
- 49:36Speaker 1: but it can you know, it can hide cancer growths
- 49:39Speaker 1: and X rays and you know, it's uh, it definitely
- 49:43Speaker 1: has something to consider, especially if that's something that runs
- 49:45Speaker 1: in your family. Yeah, um necrosis, which anytime you hear
- 49:50Speaker 1: that word necros in anywhere, you're headed for bad times.
- 49:56Speaker 1: That is tissue death. That is pretty rare, but it's
- 49:59Speaker 1: really serious and it usually results in removal of the implant.
- 50:03Speaker 1: And like sorry, sorry, you know you can't have breast
- 50:07Speaker 1: implants large large scars, permanent scars. It's bad news. Um. Again,
- 50:12Speaker 1: the breast implant canter rupture. Apparently most implant manufacturers offer
- 50:18Speaker 1: warranties for the breast uh, the implants themselves. You gotta
- 50:23Speaker 1: fill out your little card right and you also mentioned
- 50:27Speaker 1: like what magazines do you like exactly? Um, but there
- 50:31Speaker 1: are a lot of things you can do to void
- 50:32Speaker 1: said warranty. Yeah, probably, like leaning on fences is against
- 50:36Speaker 1: the warranty. Just things like that, like you you have
- 50:40Speaker 1: to once you get your warranty from what this article.
- 50:43Speaker 1: As this article paints it, you. Um, basically, you have
- 50:46Speaker 1: breast implants down. You have to be cognizant of that
- 50:50Speaker 1: or else you they are at risk of rupturing. Yeah,
- 50:52Speaker 1: they're not indestructible. Um. Did we talk about s roma?
- 50:57Speaker 1: That is just a collection of fluid, pretty minor and
- 51:00Speaker 1: they can usually just drain that with a needle. Yeah,
- 51:04Speaker 1: and then uh, we covered both semastia and rippling, and
- 51:09Speaker 1: those are the risks and you've got to consider all
- 51:12Speaker 1: that stuff because it happens, and it's probably your worst nightmare.
- 51:18Speaker 1: Some of that bad stuff happens. So I think you
- 51:21Speaker 1: kind of hit upon it pretty well earlier. Um, he said,
- 51:26Speaker 1: if you're gonna do this, you need to know all
- 51:27Speaker 1: the risks. You should be fully informed if you're gonna
- 51:30Speaker 1: make a decision like this. But if you make that decision,
- 51:34Speaker 1: go for it. And in singles, Bill Pullman completely talks
- 51:38Speaker 1: right of it. And basically it's like tells her how
- 51:41Speaker 1: beautiful she is and how she doesn't need that kind
- 51:43Speaker 1: of thing, and it's like the sweet camera and chrome moment.
- 51:47Speaker 1: He wasn't into each his own. He was turning down
- 51:49Speaker 1: money and a potential client trying to get a date,
- 51:53Speaker 1: which he did not get well. I imagine Bill Pullman
- 51:55Speaker 1: is pretty well off. Uh yeah, he probably was. Uh
- 52:01Speaker 1: what do you think Secret Life of Walter Mintie is
- 52:03Speaker 1: gonna be good? Or no? The trailer looks awesome. It
- 52:06Speaker 1: does look also, it looks really really cool. But I mean,
- 52:09Speaker 1: I've been fooled by trailers before, Chuck. I know, I've
- 52:11Speaker 1: been waiting for this movie for a long time. They
- 52:13Speaker 1: were gonna make it with Jim Carey, like fifteen years ago.
- 52:16Speaker 1: I could see that he would work one of my
- 52:17Speaker 1: favorite stories. So I'm a little bit apprehensive. But it
- 52:21Speaker 1: looks good. Who wrote it? It's right there? Man, jeez,
- 52:25Speaker 1: I can't even think of it. It's not It wasn't. Oh,
- 52:27Speaker 1: Henry wasn't it was Why did you bring this up?
- 52:31Speaker 1: What led you to that? Uh? You're talking about singles
- 52:34Speaker 1: and I thought that Ben still Head directed singles. Yeah,
- 52:37Speaker 1: those reality bites. Yes, yeah, yeah. And it's taken me
- 52:42Speaker 1: like a lot to remind myself you're not talking about swingers.
- 52:47Speaker 1: Oh right, so all those movieses? What a waste? Um,
- 52:54Speaker 1: if you you got anything else, I don't have anything else.
- 52:56Speaker 1: Oh I have one more thing. Apparently, um. Breast implants
- 52:59Speaker 1: were linked to suicide and increased risk of suicide, um
- 53:04Speaker 1: after a certain amount of years of having them. But
- 53:07Speaker 1: this it just popped up in two thousand seven and
- 53:09Speaker 1: it was found in one study and everybody it made
- 53:11Speaker 1: the news cycle and then just went away. Yeah, and
- 53:14Speaker 1: that's all. I didn't get a real accurate stat but
- 53:16Speaker 1: the woman, an accurant acron that's still in the breastand
- 53:19Speaker 1: Plan of the Future, estimated that about fifty thousand out
- 53:23Speaker 1: of four hundred thousand that are performed per year do
- 53:26Speaker 1: require like half complications and require revision surgery. So that's
- 53:31Speaker 1: an eighth that's probably significant surgically speaking. I want to
- 53:36Speaker 1: say also about the suicide think, just based on my
- 53:39Speaker 1: knowledge of news and journalism and stuff like that, if
- 53:43Speaker 1: it just popped up once and you can't find anything else,
- 53:45Speaker 1: and all the reports on it or stories on anything
- 53:49Speaker 1: are all within a week of one another, five years ago,
- 53:54Speaker 1: six years ago there, and there's no follow up whatsoever.
- 53:57Speaker 1: It wasn't a thing. Uh okay, Well, let's breast implants.
- 54:02Speaker 1: If you want to learn more, there's a really extensive
- 54:05Speaker 1: in depth article on the site, including flash animations of
- 54:08Speaker 1: the different types of incisions. Yeah, you can type breast
- 54:13Speaker 1: implant into the search bart how stuff works dot com
- 54:16Speaker 1: and it will bring that up. And since I said
- 54:17Speaker 1: search bar, it's time for message break. Uh and Chuck
- 54:26Speaker 1: take us out with some listener mail. Hum all right,
- 54:29Speaker 1: James Thurber by the way Secret Life nice. Um, all right,
- 54:34Speaker 1: this is from Todd and okay, see and this is
- 54:37Speaker 1: about vulture vomit. Hey, guys and Jerry. I just finished
- 54:41Speaker 1: listening to the podcasts and Vultures. It reminded me of
- 54:43Speaker 1: the story. A couple of my buddies were going to
- 54:45Speaker 1: college at in m s u Go Aggies, that's New
- 54:49Speaker 1: Mexico State. They were driving through the desert north of
- 54:52Speaker 1: Las Crucis. I've been there myself actually, when they came
- 54:55Speaker 1: across a small wake of vultures eating some road kill.
- 54:58Speaker 1: Two of the vultures flew away the truck approach, but
- 55:00Speaker 1: the third was just a little too slow. The poor
- 55:03Speaker 1: bird cannonballed into the windshield, which instantly shattered into tiny
- 55:07Speaker 1: glass cubes. The vulture's head punched through the windshield while
- 55:11Speaker 1: the rest of them stayed outside. The vulture instantly puked
- 55:15Speaker 1: all over the inside of the truck while my buddy
- 55:17Speaker 1: screamed in the truck. Fish tale to a halt in
- 55:19Speaker 1: the middle of the highway. Will that guy painted one
- 55:22Speaker 1: heck of a picture just now? When they jumped out
- 55:26Speaker 1: of the truck, the vultures wings were covering most of
- 55:27Speaker 1: the wind shield. As it struggled to get free, they
- 55:29Speaker 1: ended up having to pry it's head out of the
- 55:31Speaker 1: windshield the handle of a shovel, and believe it or not,
- 55:34Speaker 1: it managed to fly away. Aside from a leg that
- 55:37Speaker 1: was dangling and apparently injured, it appeared to be okay.
- 55:40Speaker 1: I don't know if that Thanks for the ride, lady.
- 55:43Speaker 1: Uh Now, I wasn't there, so I can't promise that
- 55:46Speaker 1: the story happened exactly as it was told to me,
- 55:47Speaker 1: but I can confirm that the interior the truck smelled
