- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is A Mysterious Business, bringing
- 0:31ministry and marketplace wisdom together.
- 0:34And today we have an interview episode with
- 0:36a special guest.
- 0:37We have Alyssa Krause here.
- 0:39Thanks for being with us, Alyssa.
- 0:40Thank you for having me.
- 0:41I'm so excited.
- 0:42Yeah.
- 0:43Alyssa is the founder of Rooted Elevation Wellness,
- 0:46a massage therapy practice in Geneva, Illinois, which
- 0:49is right here in the Fox Valley area.
- 0:51And Alyssa also serves on the board of
- 0:53Second Act Scene 2, a nonprofit dedicated to
- 0:56mental health and suicide prevention.
- 0:59So, like others who have been on the
- 1:01podcast for this series, you're a founder.
- 1:04You're someone who started your own thing.
- 1:06So I'm just really curious, what's like the
- 1:08two or three minute story of how Rooted
- 1:10Elevation came to be?
- 1:12Yeah, I will try to make it really
- 1:14quick, but I kind of have to go
- 1:16back a ways.
- 1:19So back in high school, I was interested
- 1:21in massage therapy, but I was raised that
- 1:26you have to go to a four-year
- 1:28education, get higher education to get a good
- 1:31degree so you can get a good job.
- 1:34And so I did all the things.
- 1:35I went to college, I got a degree,
- 1:38I actually fell in love with this other
- 1:41program.
- 1:42So I ended up going on and getting
- 1:44my master's degree and it was a study
- 1:45abroad.
- 1:47I have a love of travel because my
- 1:50dad actually took me on several mission trips
- 1:54when I was growing up.
- 1:55Oh, cool.
- 1:56Yeah.
- 1:56We did Haiti several times and Puerto Rico
- 2:00once.
- 2:00So it was pretty amazing eye-opening and
- 2:04gave me that want for helping others, especially
- 2:10seeing the poverty in Haiti.
- 2:15So fast forward, we get back from the
- 2:21overseas program, it's 2008.
- 2:23Oh gosh.
- 2:24Yeah.
- 2:24The economy crashed.
- 2:25Great timing.
- 2:26I know.
- 2:26To follow the American dream as a college
- 2:28graduate.
- 2:29Yeah.
- 2:29Yeah.
- 2:30I applied for jobs.
- 2:31I went back to work at my dad's
- 2:34office.
- 2:35We had a small business in a small
- 2:37town and I did the math and six
- 2:42months after you get out of school, you
- 2:44have to start repaying your loans.
- 2:45And I was like, oh, there is no
- 2:48way I'm going to be able to repay
- 2:50my loans.
- 2:50I guess I'm going back to school.
- 2:52So I went back to school for massage
- 2:53therapy and everything just was natural.
- 2:58Like all of the classes, I was even
- 3:01good at biology, like figuring out what muscles
- 3:04were what is crazy.
- 3:09And I ended up getting my license in
- 3:12Illinois in 2010 and worked for a lot
- 3:18of different people for many, many years.
- 3:20Okay.
- 3:21So like other businesses, not as a founder,
- 3:23but as a therapist.
- 3:24Right.
- 3:25Okay.
- 3:25Yes.
- 3:26Yes.
- 3:26I was definitely an employee, did independent contracting,
- 3:32you know, tried all the things.
- 3:35And after years of working with others, raising
- 3:38kids and a roller coaster of burnout, I
- 3:43found myself at 40 years old thinking, what
- 3:48am I doing?
- 3:48At that point, I had gone through a
- 3:52major transition in life, a lot of hard
- 3:56stuff.
- 3:58And I had four jobs.
- 4:01Oh, wow.
- 4:01And so each job I was going, going,
- 4:06going, and I couldn't figure out how to
- 4:11break out of that burnout cycle and how
- 4:14to figure out finances and figure out my
- 4:21personal life, you know?
- 4:23And so I had a friend who suggested
- 4:27I do my own business.
- 4:29And I was like, I don't know if
- 4:31I could do that.
- 4:32That sounds way too much.
- 4:34And she's like, no, I think you really
- 4:36could do this.
- 4:37You have a really big talent for this
- 4:40kind of work.
- 4:42And so I was like, okay, well, if
- 4:46I'm not going to change my life, who
- 4:48is?
- 4:51It's a really good question for all of
- 4:52us.
- 4:52Exactly.
- 4:53Yeah.
- 4:54Yeah.
- 4:54And so I was like, all right, I
- 4:57figured out that I wanted to be able
- 5:02to have the schedule that I desired and
- 5:07be able to educate people and have that
- 5:10extra time with them, get to know them
- 5:12and really educate them on how amazing our
- 5:18bodies are, first of all, and how important
- 5:21self-care is, really.
- 5:23And so I built Rooted Elevation Wellness, and
- 5:28it was a struggle at first, like everybody,
- 5:33I'm sure.
- 5:33So many businesses the first year, a couple
- 5:36of years, it's just like, oh, it feels
- 5:38fragile.
- 5:38Oh, yeah.
- 5:39And the first year I opened my doors
- 5:42with no clients, really, to speak of, and
- 5:47I also at the same time started a
- 5:51blog on self-care.
- 5:53And with that, it gave me this creative
- 5:56outlet that I was like, I think I'm
- 5:58in the right spot.
- 5:59I think I might actually be in the
- 6:01right place.
- 6:01Even though I still have other jobs right
- 6:03now, I think this might be it.
- 6:06And eventually I was able to let go
- 6:09of all four of the other jobs in
- 6:12order to fully do this business.
- 6:17Wow.
- 6:17Well, congratulations.
- 6:18Thank you.
- 6:19That's great.
- 6:19And I did sneak a look at your
- 6:21Google Maps and saw you have a five
- 6:24-star rating from all your reviews, dozens and
- 6:26dozens of reviews.
- 6:27So way to go finding those clients who
- 6:30really connect and really want the service you're
- 6:32providing.
- 6:33Thank you.
- 6:33It's not an easy thing.
- 6:35No.
- 6:35Yeah.
- 6:36Yeah.
- 6:37So speaking of like the services you provide,
- 6:40we've kind of been using this guiding quote
- 6:42from theologian Dallas Willard in this series, that
- 6:45business is a structure of love in the
- 6:48kingdom of God.
- 6:49So how do you think about your work
- 6:50related to that idea of love and God's
- 6:53kingdom?
- 6:54Yeah.
- 6:57So when people come in to get massages
- 7:00from me, they experience their body in a
- 7:04different way.
- 7:05It's kind of like, I had a new
- 7:08client on the table the other day and
- 7:10he was like, oh, I didn't realize that
- 7:13felt like that until I was pushing on
- 7:15it.
- 7:16And I was like, yeah, that's one of
- 7:18the really cool things about massage is that
- 7:20you are more aware of your physical self
- 7:25and it plays into the mental and emotional
- 7:30and spiritual aspects of the self as well.
- 7:35Because you're working on all these different systems
- 7:39and even though I'm not always talking about
- 7:44God with every client, I do with several,
- 7:47which is cool.
- 7:49But I pray.
- 7:50I pray all the time.
- 7:51I pray over my business, I pray over
- 7:54the people coming in, I pray over the
- 7:56people going out.
- 7:58And so I feel like having that space
- 8:02that people can feel safe in, especially if
- 8:06they're coming in with grief or emotional struggles,
- 8:11that I'm providing that structure of love in
- 8:16the sense of renewing their spirits, renewing their
- 8:20body, and renewing their mind, hopefully, with all
- 8:24the different aspects.
- 8:27And they come in for an hour, but
- 8:31they leave, hopefully feeling cared for, grounded, and
- 8:36restored, going back to their family, going back
- 8:38to their workplace, their church, and their community
- 8:40feeling differently.
- 8:42And that affects transfers.
- 8:46So the healing spreads, which I think is
- 8:49a good structure of love.
- 8:51Praise the Lord.
- 8:52Yeah.
- 8:52As you're describing it, I think about the
- 8:55idea of Christian holism, that Jesus taught us
- 8:58to love God with our heart, soul, mind,
- 9:00strength, every aspect of who we are.
- 9:03And in the Western world, at least, we
- 9:05often kind of skip the body part of
- 9:07that.
- 9:08It's like an addendum or we ignore it.
- 9:10And I imagine that people coming to you,
- 9:13they're getting in touch with real things that
- 9:16are stored in their body.
- 9:17Oh, yeah.
- 9:19Oh, yeah.
- 9:19No, I just took a somatic massage class,
- 9:22and it's working with the nervous system.
- 9:25And it's amazing what our body stores that
- 9:28we are neglectful of.
- 9:31We don't want to think about it.
- 9:32You're not necessarily consciously aware of it, but
- 9:34it's still there.
- 9:35And it's still part of our life.
- 9:36And so it's part of our life with
- 9:37God.
- 9:38Exactly.
- 9:38Yeah.
- 9:39So in that sense, it sounds like it
- 9:41really can be a ministry of healing at
- 9:43its best.
- 9:43Oh, yeah.
- 9:44It's just amazing.
- 9:45Yeah.
- 9:46So thank you for what you're doing in
- 9:47our community.
- 9:49I'm happy to be here.
- 9:50Yeah.
- 9:52So another question that we've been exploring with
- 9:54different founders is, what about profits, right?
- 9:57Because it is a business.
- 9:58So you've got to make money.
- 9:59And yet also, it's like something so deeply
- 10:01personal, like for you.
- 10:02You're touching people's bodies.
- 10:05You're tapping into maybe grief, like you said.
- 10:08It's deeply personal.
- 10:10So how do you wrap your head and
- 10:12your own business model around the idea of
- 10:15profit versus like the deeper human purpose of
- 10:17the work?
- 10:18Yeah, definitely.
- 10:20Profit's a huge thing.
- 10:22And I was raised more with a scarcity
- 10:26mindset, like your money doesn't grow on the
- 10:30trees.
- 10:31It's the root of all evil to a
- 10:33certain extent, but it's a necessary evil.
- 10:38And so I had to do a lot
- 10:40of rewiring of my brain, like that mindset,
- 10:43just reframing what I think money is.
- 10:47And I was able to change from it's
- 10:54that evil necessity to it's actually a tool.
- 10:58It's a helpful tool.
- 11:01And by receiving money, it allows me to
- 11:07give the best massage I can, to put
- 11:12more work into the business so that I
- 11:14can do education, to reach more people through
- 11:19online self-care, online courses.
- 11:22Like it actually is a really cool thing
- 11:27that we have, even though it's a kind
- 11:31of a stressor.
- 11:34But I don't know if you've had a
- 11:37crappy massage.
- 11:42And I probably gave some when I was
- 11:44burned out.
- 11:46Right, right.
- 11:47They probably got muscular relief.
- 11:49Yeah.
- 11:50To really do it, you can't just phone
- 11:52it in.
- 11:53Yeah.
- 11:53Yeah.
- 11:54And so I was like, I need to
- 11:56make sure to set it up so that
- 11:59I am providing that highest quality and to
- 12:03help keep me out of burnout.
- 12:05Yeah.
- 12:07So I heard someone talk about how profit
- 12:12is like fuel for a car.
- 12:15It's not exactly where it can take you.
- 12:19And so we need to be a good
- 12:23steward of profit.
- 12:25My business is at such a baby stage
- 12:28that it's still like trying to have some
- 12:34profit, if that makes sense.
- 12:37But I am so looking forward to giving
- 12:40back to the community any way I can.
- 12:42And I do tithe and stuff.
- 12:46That's really helpful.
- 12:48That idea that it's a tool, it's part
- 12:51of the structure, but it's not exactly the
- 12:54point.
- 12:54Yeah.
- 12:55Yeah.
- 12:56That's really cool.
- 12:58So thinking about, you mentioned tithing and your
- 13:01relationship with the local church.
- 13:03I know you and I have had a
- 13:04chance to chat in the past about your
- 13:05church, which is here locally too.
- 13:07Do you feel like there are lessons you've
- 13:09learned by starting your business that have borne
- 13:13fruit in your church life?
- 13:15Or vice versa, like things you've learned in
- 13:17the church world that then you've been able
- 13:18to apply in your business?
- 13:20Oh, yeah.
- 13:23One big thing is that I can't run
- 13:27my business alone, and I don't want to.
- 13:33Trusting God has changed my stress level completely.
- 13:38I actually was really stressed out probably the
- 13:43end of last year just because of the
- 13:46fluctuations in clients and my schedule.
- 13:49And I was trying to get more people
- 13:51in, but then different things, people cancel, and
- 13:56it's like, oh my gosh, how am I
- 13:58going to pay my bills?
- 13:58Yeah.
- 13:59And so I got to that point where
- 14:03I was like, okay, God, I am so
- 14:08stressed out about this.
- 14:10Please just take it over.
- 14:12And I put the back end work in.
- 14:15I set up all my booking software.
- 14:18I did all of the things to make
- 14:21it possible to kind of run on its
- 14:24own.
- 14:24And then I was like, okay, God, I
- 14:27trust you.
- 14:28Take care of my schedule because I cannot
- 14:31mentally handle it.
- 14:34And since that point, a couple of times
- 14:38I had to remind myself, a couple of
- 14:41times.
- 14:42But every day that I say, okay, you
- 14:45have my schedule, it lines up perfectly.
- 14:49Every session is exactly what I needed and
- 14:56what they needed.
- 14:58He's literally putting the people on my table
- 15:01that need what I do and filling my
- 15:06schedule exactly the right way for me, even
- 15:11more than I would do myself.
- 15:14When I have a day that's way too
- 15:16crammed, I get a cancellation and I'm like,
- 15:20okay, God, thank you.
- 15:22My hands hurt today.
- 15:25So that has been huge.
- 15:28So just trusting and letting go and literally
- 15:33stopping myself from trying to control everything.
- 15:39I really love that.
- 15:40There's so much that's beyond your control.
- 15:42In an entrepreneurial setting.
- 15:44You don't know what the revenue is going
- 15:46to be in a given month.
- 15:47You don't know exactly what your schedule is
- 15:48going to be.
- 15:49And yet there are the things you can
- 15:50do, like setting up the software, like you
- 15:53said.
- 15:54But to me, the passage that comes to
- 15:56mind is when Paul's talking about, I planted
- 16:00and Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.
- 16:03You're doing the work of planting and watering
- 16:06the business, but ultimately the outcomes are beyond
- 16:09your control.
- 16:09And so God's the one that has to
- 16:11give that growth to provide for you and
- 16:13to provide for the community and the people
- 16:14you're serving.
- 16:16And that's just beautiful to see how God
- 16:17does come through in that way.
- 16:20That's awesome.
- 16:21Yeah.
- 16:23I always think of the verses with the
- 16:26trees along streams that bear fruits.
- 16:30Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 16:31As far as like my logo or like,
- 16:33not my logo logo, but like my name
- 16:36for rooted, that resonates really well with me
- 16:40in the business as well.
- 16:42Yeah.
- 16:42Wow.
- 16:43That's a beautiful image.
- 16:44Yeah.
- 16:45Yeah.
- 16:46So we have a wide variety of listeners
- 16:48for finding God at work, but some of
- 16:50them are also in business or maybe considering
- 16:53going into business, possible future entrepreneurs.
- 16:56So what words of counsel would you like
- 16:59to share with folks that might be considering
- 17:00this path in their life with God?
- 17:02So I'm going to say one of my
- 17:07favorite Bible verses is Jeremiah 29, 11.
- 17:13For I know the plans I have for
- 17:14you, plans to prosper you, not to harm
- 17:17you, plans to give you hope in the
- 17:18future.
- 17:20So keeping that in mind helped me in
- 17:24starting my business, but also trusting that internal
- 17:28nudge and looking at fear as more of
- 17:34excitement.
- 17:35They feel similar in the body, but they
- 17:39do opposite things.
- 17:41One produces good things and the other doesn't
- 17:44produce anything really.
- 17:48Realize that hard work won't feel hard if
- 17:52you're doing something you love and fulfilling a
- 17:56purpose.
- 17:58Ask yourself if what you're thinking about doing
- 18:02will feel aligned with you and if it's
- 18:05actually going to benefit others.
- 18:07That's great.
- 18:08Don't get caught up in yourself only, but
- 18:11work to build healthy relationships with others because
- 18:14it's good to have mentors in the process.
- 18:19I have a Christian business coach that helps
- 18:22remind me all the time not to get
- 18:23stuck in comparison or imposter syndrome.
- 18:27There's so many things that are hard about
- 18:30starting a business or running a business that
- 18:34most people don't really think about.
- 18:37So it's really important to create your own
- 18:39support system.
- 18:41And then lastly, and probably most importantly, slow
- 18:44down and listen.
- 18:46God speaks to us when we slow down.
- 18:49So that's a huge thing that I keep
- 18:52reminding myself too.
- 18:54And it could be a hard lesson to
- 18:56learn.
- 18:56When you feel all of those things that
- 18:58you're responsible for, the temptation is just like,
- 19:01just grind it out, just move fast.
- 19:03And that's our society.
- 19:04Yeah, yeah.
- 19:04It gets reinforced and sometimes even rewarded in
- 19:07our culture.
- 19:08And yet, if we're going to do this
- 19:10with God, we have to have that time
- 19:13for solitude, for silence, for listening.
- 19:15Yes.
- 19:16Yeah.
- 19:16Amen.
- 19:17Amen.
- 19:18Well, hopefully this episode is maybe a chance
- 19:21for a little bit of slow down for
- 19:22the listeners too.
- 19:23Alyssa, would you be willing to just kind
- 19:24of close in prayer for our listeners with
- 19:26everything we've talked about?
- 19:28Yes, of course.
- 19:29Dear Lord, thank you for this day, this
- 19:32opportunity to share my journey with you through
- 19:34business and letting this message reach those that
- 19:38need it the most.
- 19:40You are so amazing in how you have
- 19:42created each of us individually as unique people
- 19:47that have a purpose here on earth.
- 19:51We know that life gets tough and sometimes
- 19:54we aren't sure about our purpose, but you're
- 19:56always there to hold us and remind us
- 19:58of the small joys in life.
- 20:00When we let go and trust you to
- 20:03lead us, it's your timing, not ours.
- 20:08It produces really beautiful things in life.
- 20:12Thank you for Chris and this podcast and
- 20:14the people setting it up.
- 20:17We love you in Jesus name.
- 20:19Amen.
- 20:23Thanks for listening.
