- 0:00Speaker 1: Abrivox dot Org. The Bobsey Twins at Cloverbank by Laura
- 0:05Speaker 1: Lee Hope Hiving the Bees. Bert Bobbsey did not understand
- 0:11Speaker 1: what Sam Porter's excitement was all about, but he could
- 0:15Speaker 1: tell by the way Sam acted and by the way
- 0:18Speaker 1: he called, that it was something serious. So he dropped
- 0:23Speaker 1: his fish and his pole and made ready to follow
- 0:26Speaker 1: his new chum. Come on, come on, called Sam, peering
- 0:30Speaker 1: out from his shelter in the bushes as he saw
- 0:32Speaker 1: that Bert was not hurrying as much as he might.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Run for it. If you don't want to get stung. Stung,
- 0:38Speaker 1: exclaimed Bert yep, answered the country lad, don't you see
- 0:43Speaker 1: that's a bunch of bees with the Queen Bee in
- 0:45Speaker 1: the middle, and they're looking for a place to settle
- 0:47Speaker 1: so they can start a new home. I only hope
- 0:50Speaker 1: they don't light on this bush, he added, as Bert
- 0:53Speaker 1: crawled in the shelter with him. If they do, oh boy,
- 0:57Speaker 1: look out for yourself. The best thing to do will
- 0:59Speaker 1: be to leg it for the creek and jump in.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Just let you know, stick out, that's all. I hope
- 1:05Speaker 1: they don't decide to settle here where we are. But
- 1:07Speaker 1: the swarm of humming busy little insects following their queen
- 1:11Speaker 1: suddenly turned and made for a tree not far away.
- 1:15Speaker 1: There the bees clustered in a bunch on one of
- 1:17Speaker 1: the low branches. That's good, cried Sam. Mister Watson can
- 1:22Speaker 1: easily get them from there. Come on, we'll go tell him.
- 1:26Speaker 1: The boys picked up their fish and their poles, and
- 1:29Speaker 1: soon they were at Cloverbank. Oh what a fine lot
- 1:31Speaker 1: of fish, exclaimed Missus Bobbsey as she saw the two
- 1:35Speaker 1: boys with their strings. Yes, they're good fish, Bird said,
- 1:39Speaker 1: but will you take them? Please? Nan, I have to
- 1:42Speaker 1: go with Sam and tell mister Watson about his swarm
- 1:44Speaker 1: of bees. What's this about the bees, Missus Bobbsey wanted
- 1:48Speaker 1: to know. The boys taking turns, quickly told her, and
- 1:51Speaker 1: Bert added, I'm going to watch mister Watson catch them.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Oh so am, I cried Freddie. Nan hurried back to
- 1:58Speaker 1: the farmhouse where the two strings fish, which were to
- 2:01Speaker 1: be put in the cool cellar until needed. Sam said
- 2:04Speaker 1: he would be back and get his after the bees
- 2:06Speaker 1: were caught. So some of my bees got away, did, they?
- 2:09Speaker 1: Asked mister Watson. When he had been told the news,
- 2:12Speaker 1: he was about to set out for another of his
- 2:15Speaker 1: orchards where peaches were being picked, but when he heard
- 2:17Speaker 1: about his honeymakers, he decided to postpone his orchard trip.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Followed by the Bobbsey twins, their mother and Sam, mister
- 2:25Speaker 1: Watson hurried to the little valley where he kept about
- 2:27Speaker 1: a hundred hives of bees. Like little dog houses, the
- 2:30Speaker 1: hives were only with flat instead of peaked roofs, and
- 2:34Speaker 1: of course only a small slit was kneaded in the
- 2:36Speaker 1: bottom of each hive house to let the bees fly
- 2:39Speaker 1: in and out. The hives stood and rose in an
- 2:42Speaker 1: orchard of apple trees near a small garden. There was
- 2:45Speaker 1: a farm house in this valley, in which lived a
- 2:47Speaker 1: man and his wife who looked after the bees. I
- 2:50Speaker 1: had three swarms out today, called Jason Stern, the bee keeper,
- 2:54Speaker 1: to mister Watson when he later arrived. I couldn't get
- 2:57Speaker 1: them all. One got away. I know where it is,
- 3:01Speaker 1: the peach grower answered. Burt and Sam saw the swarm
- 3:04Speaker 1: alight when they were coming back from fishing. I'll take
- 3:06Speaker 1: an empty hive on the small hand cart and bring
- 3:09Speaker 1: them back. You'd better come along to help, that is,
- 3:12Speaker 1: if you have the other swarms safe. Yes, they're all right.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Except the one that got away, said Mistress turn. While
- 3:19Speaker 1: the Bobsey twins watched, mister Watson and the bee keeper
- 3:22Speaker 1: put rubber gloves on their hands and on their heads
- 3:25Speaker 1: big straw hats, the brim of which held the mosquito
- 3:28Speaker 1: netting veil away from their faces so no bee could
- 3:31Speaker 1: get near them. They also tied down the legs of
- 3:33Speaker 1: their trousers, for sometimes a bee or two will crawl
- 3:36Speaker 1: up your pants, and it isn't very pleasant, said Jason
- 3:40Speaker 1: Stern with a laugh. Then a two wheeled cart with
- 3:43Speaker 1: a flat wooden platform was brought out of the barn
- 3:45Speaker 1: and the party set off. They presently came in view
- 3:49Speaker 1: of the tree on which the swarm had alighted. The
- 3:51Speaker 1: cluster of bees was like a big football, and somewhat
- 3:55Speaker 1: similar in shape. A low buzzing sound could be heard better.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Not coming in closer with the children, advised the farmer
- 4:01Speaker 1: to missus Bobbsey, a stray beer or two might sting them.
- 4:05Speaker 1: You can watch Jason and me from here. The mother
- 4:07Speaker 1: of the twins, and in fact the twins themselves as
- 4:10Speaker 1: well as Sam did not care to go too near,
- 4:13Speaker 1: so they sat down on a grassy hillock while the
- 4:15Speaker 1: two men wheeled the cart close under the tree, and
- 4:18Speaker 1: the cart was an empty bee hive, one of many
- 4:21Speaker 1: kept ready for just such occasions as this. Also, mister
- 4:25Speaker 1: Stern had brought with them a smoker, which was something
- 4:28Speaker 1: like a tin funnel with the little leather bellows beneath it.
- 4:32Speaker 1: When this bellows was pumped, clouds of smoke were sent
- 4:35Speaker 1: out of the small end of the funnel, directed against
- 4:38Speaker 1: the swarm of bees. The smoke quieted them so they
- 4:41Speaker 1: would not sting those who handled them. The cart, with
- 4:44Speaker 1: the open empty hive on it, was wheeled up until
- 4:47Speaker 1: it was directly under the branch on which hung the
- 4:49Speaker 1: clustering bees around their queen. You hold the cart steady now,
- 4:53Speaker 1: Jason directed mister Watson, and I'll climb up in the
- 4:56Speaker 1: tree and jar them off as soon as most of
- 4:59Speaker 1: them are inside the hid. I've clapped the cover on,
- 5:02Speaker 1: all right, was the answer. I wonder what would happen,
- 5:06Speaker 1: said Bert, if the cluster of bees and their queen
- 5:09Speaker 1: should fall on mister Stearn's head instead of in the
- 5:11Speaker 1: empty hive. It wouldn't be very pleasant, his mother answered, though,
- 5:15Speaker 1: I guess with the veils the men won't get stung.
- 5:18Speaker 1: But watch now, children, and see them hide the runaway bees. Jason,
- 5:22Speaker 1: are you already down there? Called mister Watson to his
- 5:24Speaker 1: be man, When the farmer himself was up in the tree.
- 5:27Speaker 1: All ready was the answer, shake him down. End of
- 5:31Speaker 1: Chapter nineteen.
