- 0:40Tell me how my good man. So did we get to what a decent
- 0:43doctor now? How lovely?
- 0:45Fuck off. Okay, let's start in 5 4, 3 2, 1
- 0:540, I come back to the blunt. Penknife Doctor, Who comment re
- 1:01podcast, are you taking the piss?
- 1:11I'll go get more and more. Elaborate nice.
- 1:14Like a Lon you've succeeded. This is the Doctor Who
- 1:18commentary podcast. My name is Mark and I'm joined
- 1:23by Luke Malloy. Say hello.
- 1:42Hello. How are you?
- 1:45I'm great, because we're going to be watching a really, really
- 1:48good episode of Doctor. Hey, you're not being sarcastic.
- 1:52No, no, no. Yeah, we can never be too sure.
- 1:58You know, that's true. It will quite like, listen,
- 2:02don't we? We all this.
- 2:04Yeah, I think this is yeah. We all agree on this one so
- 2:09that'll be interesting. I think this is in my Top 10 of
- 2:13moderns up there. He's certainly my favorite
- 2:18Capaldi episode. Yeah, I love them all.
- 2:23So yeah yeah. Wow I'll say I prefer things
- 2:27like what nothing time dr. Falls are prefer mummy on the
- 2:32Orient Express flattop. No I guess not mommy but this
- 2:38definitely ranks like it's Totally different from anything
- 2:44that's gone before in the new series.
- 2:46And that's what about intron of subvert expectations.
- 2:54Yeah, this is this is totally silver.
- 2:56So you got no idea where the pots gonna go.
- 2:58It's amazing. Yeah, I wish I could watch it
- 3:01again for the first time. I'm not entirely certain, there
- 3:03is a plot actually. You know, I said a series of set
- 3:06pieces and some ideas but I couldn't say that there's a
- 3:09pretty robust plan. In this one, what the plot is?
- 3:13The doctors chance of fun. This life-form, the he's
- 3:17theorized, if the always, if they evolved so much to be the
- 3:22perfect Hider, how would you find one?
- 3:25Which I think is one of the most ingenious ideas Doctor Who's
- 3:29ever had genuinely? What's an idea that is?
- 3:32Can I just ask? You know, what this is?
- 3:35That's what this was about. Yeah, I kind of got it
- 3:38explained. Yes.
- 3:39Because I didn't know that. Yeah, I know.
- 3:41Sort of make your mind up if there is something there or not.
- 3:44That's yeah, that's what I really like about it.
- 3:46It's like I can't think of any other story that has that where
- 3:50it's like you can sort of interpret it so much.
- 3:53Yeah, this to excuses for everything isn't the yeah it's a
- 3:56kid under the blanket. Or is it a Monster?
- 3:58Yeah, well the thing I love do is the thing that disappoints me
- 4:02so much about horror movies is there's often a lot of suspense
- 4:07in the build-up of what is the Menace of this movie.
- 4:10And then Huge fucking disappointment.
- 4:13When you get to the climax, I don't know, but I'm sure pull
- 4:16one out of a hat. It when it's that giant spider
- 4:19creature and you know, what is this now?
- 4:22And they're all the suspense is gone out the room, where is
- 4:25this? It never asks, does it never
- 4:27answers what's under or some top of the bed and never answers was
- 4:30banging on the door and that's scary.
- 4:33Yeah. As you think it's there's only
- 4:36one but I don't like about this towards the end.
- 4:39Good just the barn bit. Okay, with not, we'll get, we'll
- 4:43get there but that might be the only bit that I'm not so high.
- 4:46It's all part of Steven Moffat obsession with making Clara
- 4:49Oswald, the most important person in all of Doctor Who.
- 4:52But the thing about being scary, just go back a second is that
- 4:57it's an idea that genuinely could be real, and I don't think
- 5:01dogs a does that very often. They side this idea that like
- 5:04things evolved to be the perfect ending to the perfect thing.
- 5:07It so, why not the perfect hide? It's genuinely like a Sound
- 5:11scientific idea to the point where it could.
- 5:14It's not just fiction in a way it's like, yeah, they could they
- 5:18could be something under the bed.
- 5:21Also, do you think this this leans into Peter Capaldi's
- 5:25strengths as an actor because and I do think he'd get it
- 5:28eventually gets the Comedy Bang on you.
- 5:31And I were saying, well, we're from husband's of River Song and
- 5:35the return of doctor Mysterio. And then in this last season, I
- 5:37think the comedy really, really well.
- 5:39So be all good in his first two seasons.
- 5:41When he's fighting Robin Hood with a spoon of things like
- 5:45that, there is a specially, he just is a fails to get the
- 5:49balance quite a lot in Athens across like a knob.
- 5:53Well he's a moody fucker, is there is a and in this episode
- 5:56he gets to be brooding and menacing.
- 5:58It's like with semester McCoy when he gets to play that it
- 6:01absolutely brings the best out of him but it's Comedy Works in
- 6:04this episode. He has some zing in line.
- 6:08Why'd you are three movies funny, just turn your head, its
- 6:10body. In favorite line ever?
- 6:12Yeah, that image of him. Atop The Tardis from the
- 6:16beginning and then the camera sort of zoom in around that
- 6:20beautiful Tardis console candles about use.
- 6:24It, just sticks in the head, doesn't it?
- 6:26Well, yeah, we should. We should we start, we should
- 6:28lose not, we should decide this. Yeah, I should have stopped this
- 6:31whole episode with listen. Okay, I'll come down from 3. 3 2
- 6:511 go. Yeah, this opening there, it's
- 6:56really good material for the equality.
- 6:58This is worth, like, in this series.
- 7:02This was the first episode where I really saw him as the doctor.
- 7:06And finally, it took me a bit of time because like deep breath
- 7:09into the Dalek, I wasn't a fan of robot of Sherwood, okay?
- 7:13And then this is where I really started to enjoy.
- 7:16Yeah, absolutely. Agree with you.
- 7:19Well, I think he's on a bit of a run after this, because I think
- 7:21he's super fun in time high. Heist and he's brilliant in,
- 7:25Kill the moon, he's brilliant in mummy, Flatline Darkness, I
- 7:29think of killed and then the steps out the
- 7:50Tardis and goes who fights the monsters.
- 7:53I was like yeah he is the doctor.
- 7:56Did you see that transition from sings there, where the fish came
- 7:59across the screen now when Douglas MacKinnon who directs
- 8:03this episode brilliantly directed, Good Omens, he was
- 8:06doing a lot of that. I think Doctor Who was he is
- 8:09testing ground because he started with sontaran stratagem
- 8:13and poison sky and those were very humble beginnings of all my
- 8:16say, by the time he gets here, he notice light it.
- 8:20He knows how to shoot it. Yeah, he is a director Doctor
- 8:23Who is basically been his his education.
- 8:26This is a beautifully directed episodes.
- 8:28Hmm. I think the lion does a lot of
- 8:31the work, you know. Yeah.
- 8:32I probably agree with you actually.
- 8:35And we've got our first sort of clue beer with the chalk.
- 8:37Moving on its own or doesn't what they just forget that get
- 8:43that was creepy, I did. He just forget that's all we
- 8:48three people out as they're watching this.
- 8:51What you do so good? No, I made that comment of the
- 8:58Davis, goes out to me, to write, good television, whereas Moffat,
- 9:02goes out to write good Doctor Who and This is were like Moffat
- 9:0710. It, it looks for me, it's better
- 9:12than Russell today. Is it his best right?
- 9:14Invest television, is my favorite and best doctor here
- 9:17because you're mad. No, no, because this is just
- 9:21pushing up to two new areas. It's so unique.
- 9:24It's so experimental, it just demands that you go back and
- 9:27re-watch it so much. You can get more out of every
- 9:31time you watch it. And it already this opening,
- 9:33it's an unusual book to Tori, just with that bit with the
- 9:36doctor on his own. This monologue, I don't disagree
- 9:40with what you're saying but I peek television is jacket
- 9:43arabiya. Menaced by a Christmas tree, it
- 9:47is in its own, right? Okay, so this is super fun with
- 9:52glass with the interminably boring, Danny pink?
- 9:58Or I say the extremely fuckable. Danny pink.
- 10:02Beautiful. Yeah, I was gonna say what does
- 10:04she see it in but you've just say really answer the question.
- 10:08He's got caramel skin and a lovely beard.
- 10:10I mean one more journalists and he's a soldier if you forgot
- 10:14Jesus Christ, he is a Dullard and he, but we're going to just
- 10:19sort of I met him in this series so far, so we don't really know
- 10:22where it's going. At this point, you don't really
- 10:24know where it's going to go. It's the rock.
- 10:26The Clara has to do the work in the date.
- 10:29That's what surprises me like the Clara.
- 10:31It looks gorgeous and is safe it and she's doing the work.
- 10:39He's wearing a pink shirt. That's a bit literal.
- 10:41When it is thing, isn't it? Is that the it's like the
- 10:48part-time companion. They want to have their lives
- 10:51and they want to travel in the Tardis so this sort of
- 10:53transition from Adventures in the Tardis to being on the day.
- 10:58After that was a trailer what it and I think it does the trailer
- 11:01when they showed her like in the midst of Adventures and then I
- 11:05know it's the caretaker at the beginning.
- 11:07Yeah, going in. I've represented, sorry, but
- 11:11this, this is done better than in Time of the Doctor with the
- 11:13Christmas turkey in and out the room and stuff, don't give, it's
- 11:17the same kind of thing, isn't it?
- 11:18But this is done. I think this is done quite well.
- 11:21Yeah, I do as well. It's a good sort of central
- 11:25location to just hang the episode around.
- 11:28She had these weird things, but keeps going back to the funny
- 11:30day. Now, let's say something pretty
- 11:32controversial now because I've not made it a secret that I find
- 11:37Clara Oswald to be one of the drivers.
- 11:39His companions as you think her Arc in series 8 that speak Laura
- 11:44like she really works and seriously as she's getting to
- 11:47know Capaldi and I've not so much the Danny pink, right?
- 11:51It's very weird. And the caretaker, when they're
- 11:54all squabbling and it becomes this crazy.
- 11:57Weird toxic. I hate, I hate the caretaker,
- 12:01but she's brilliant in this whole season.
- 12:03I feel like she's finally grasp hold of a character after
- 12:06serious 7B and she's running. With it.
- 12:09Yeah, well along, yeah. It did purposely didn't give him
- 12:14much of a character 7B because they had to do the mystery at
- 12:17the same time. I think all the best bits of
- 12:20Clara commentary date. Definitely, you get the argument
- 12:24of the end of Kill the moon, and you get the moments in here with
- 12:28the day in under the bed. She just has so many good Mo.
- 12:31You got the volcano scene, I think other volcanoes, these
- 12:34amazing our, the best scene is is that being the Tardis where
- 12:37after she's betrayed him, When he says, do you think I'll still
- 12:41wouldn't help you out even though you betrayed?
- 12:42Yeah. Oh that's a lie.
- 12:45This is comedy gold. What someone needs to explain,
- 12:50explain. Anything in this is he is
- 13:13suffering from PTSD, isn't it from being in the Army?
- 13:17So other people like, the car is always going on about his army
- 13:20Express. Well, I'll tell you what go and
- 13:22spend a bit of time in Afghanistan, and then, come back
- 13:24to me. All right.
- 13:26Yeah, I think it's just the fact of that is his character.
- 13:28There's nothing more to him than a him.
- 13:30Just saying, I love you. I was in the Army.
- 13:32Yeah, but then it picks the doctor.
- 13:34When it's like anti Soldier is really.
- 13:36Yeah, because you have the answers, I'll just drop it into
- 13:38the Dalek, don't ya? It's a bit.
- 13:39And then it's such a huge to link to this.
- 13:42Yeah. But where does that go?
- 13:45If I missed that, we are it's perfectly.
- 13:48So he has an issue with Danny pink.
- 13:50Yeah. But it's because he was a
- 13:51soldier in the time. I think that's the idea.
- 13:53Is he kind of hates himself? It's not really explicitly
- 13:57stated, I think. Yeah.
- 13:58I think I do. Yeah, I need that.
- 14:01I'm sorry, something's up. I like how he's just so
- 14:04ruthlessly ignorant to the fact Clarence, just fucked up a date,
- 14:08he just doesn't think I've got history, we need to go test it.
- 14:12The payoff is later when she tries to go the day together.
- 14:15The fucking spacesuit, won't ya pay my own Gods.
- 14:19But that's the point where you really have no idea what we're
- 14:22this. Episode's going.
- 14:24It's pretty, just its release wherever creepy in this
- 14:27orphanage. I mean, I always figured these
- 14:30places were a bit scary but yeah, I love the fact that's an
- 14:36old woman. That just the fact that this
- 14:39dream happens to everyone, a different tires and everyone is
- 14:41still scared of the monster under the bed.
- 14:45I think the very simple shooting in a minute of the thing on the
- 14:50bed, with the blanket, over his head and the light coming
- 14:54through the window. It's just so well crafted that
- 14:58direction, I remember seeing it in the trailer, thinking the
- 15:01Pyrrha files were back. That's such a, what the hell
- 15:08would you do if you got out of bed and someone grabbed your
- 15:10foot like that? I don't know.
- 15:16He's just screaming your some feel like I mean, I've never had
- 15:23think I love when I see it's a great thing to use as a basis
- 15:28for the story. What he looks like.
- 15:30Yeah yeah it'll do chateaus it will do statues.
- 15:33Yeah it'll do gas Mark children because we've all had nightmares
- 15:37about those apparently. Yeah.
- 15:38Like my forgets his thing about yeah he does things like you
- 15:42can't look at them. You can't think of them like
- 15:44that's his MO. And that's very jealous idea
- 15:46from, but Russell T Davies just does animals.
- 15:50It does cat. See those rhinos?
- 15:52You just pretend to me those people in waters of Mars without
- 15:56horrible, blistered mouths. Scared me for weeks.
- 15:59They are incredibly good. Yeah, so we got to Clara putting
- 16:03her fingers in the telegraphic thing.
- 16:06We needs. I'm glad Yeah.
- 16:15Yeah. The same alphabet but I'm glad
- 16:17we see what it does because it is always a bit in the Tardis.
- 16:20They thought. What's that foot was a no
- 16:22buttons that we do. You know what?
- 16:24This could sit episode could be a scary as it wants to be but
- 16:27nothing will be more chilling than won't pick up all these
- 16:29Smiles. I smile is so exciting.
- 16:33It's really creepy. You're not pitting under the
- 16:39lake. Is that the first part?
- 16:41Yeah I like that bit where he comes out at the end and he's
- 16:43like a skeleton. Come In out and see, I can tell
- 16:46the difference, but I think this is his Series.
- 16:56This is like his Heaven Senate this year, isn't it?
- 16:58Yeah. His piece of sort of our house
- 17:00experimental Doctor Who, and this is him, like I said to you,
- 17:05where you can just write a script is not starting the
- 17:08season is not ending a season, he should tell him.
- 17:11The story was quite as like a budget-friendly one as well as
- 17:14not. Yeah.
- 17:15Massive set pieces. Few characters it working out.
- 17:18It's really well. But they're like the best ones
- 17:20every time. I don't know, you know, you
- 17:23know, okay, yeah. I got a friend called Kate,
- 17:26right? Yeah.
- 17:27She never was doctor and her life.
- 17:29She just so happen to be come around on a Saturday when this
- 17:31episode was last, okay. I'm sorry.
- 17:33Well, I've been up. I've got washed up to at 7:00,
- 17:36what's this? Episode were met, right?
- 17:38Yeah, I'll give some context. She usually watches love Island.
- 17:42All right? Okay.
- 17:44All right. Okay, I love Of you if you
- 17:45listen to this. But that is, as intelligent as
- 17:48your television watching, gets what she wants this and that the
- 17:51ancient world a fuck was that one about the time where it was
- 17:59on a bit later on a Saturday. Yeah, series and later and later
- 18:04and we got later date but I'm more me on the always express
- 18:06came out. It was like 8:35.
- 18:07It went. Yeah, that was when I started
- 18:11not watching live as much and still catching up, maybe.
- 18:15You are the reason for coming down.
- 18:18I remember it because I just started using it.
- 18:20I started using the week time. I just went out and we went out
- 18:22on the Saturday night that caretaker cave.
- 18:24Oh, and I've got it at six in the morning, absolutely
- 18:26hammered. So I gotta watch the caretaker,
- 18:29oh my God, what I regret that was we had just gone to bed, you
- 18:34know, we're even though at the time, even I did like this, I'm
- 18:37Taco reviews. I gave this one.
- 18:39A I was still this first half of the season.
- 18:42I was still like I'm not okay. Hated 7B for the most and I was
- 18:47still sort of a bit on the fence.
- 18:49It wasn't until Flatline. I remember, watching Flatline
- 18:52and I declared a doctor who has been saved, you know, in a very
- 18:57dramatic way. I'd say the agree Flatline was
- 19:00the one with felt like, okay, but this doctor is good choice.
- 19:05We're gonna go back to good things.
- 19:10Also carrot. Now, I've lost track, oh,
- 19:13there's a great guy Gear with the coffee cup because this is
- 19:17talking about how people don't you don't keep an eye on your
- 19:20coffee, things might take and implying.
- 19:23It's going to be the hidden creature, and then in a second,
- 19:25you just see the doctor sipping from it.
- 19:28Joe? What you've caught a lot of
- 19:30details that I've missed we watch listen on your own solely
- 19:34focused and it's absolutely brilliant.
- 19:38You have been using the online randomizer recently, and
- 19:42unfortunately is a cruel Beast as I met you earlier, because
- 19:45you can get gems, like, listen. And then that's followed up with
- 19:48stuff, like Time of the Doctor, to Greater the, so, it was the
- 19:54long game doctor's wife. Yeah.
- 19:57Oh yeah, the long game. Yeah, I do mind actually.
- 20:00Yeah, the thing underneath the blanket that we get to see, Have
- 20:08you looked up? I was reading earlier if you
- 20:10seen this flu, fiery afterwards. Never heard of it, though.
- 20:16Your story written, by Steven Moffat, in the 2007 story perk,
- 20:21where there's a creature, called a floof, which it sort of keeps
- 20:26itself out of sight like this dangerous creature that you
- 20:28can't see. So it's about this guy and it's
- 20:31site and there's a theory that this thing is a floof and it
- 20:36looks like and Short of old man's of Roswell alien the old
- 20:40man thing. It's a really scary picture.
- 20:42I thought it that's it. It's a kids book as an
- 20:44illustration, but it's really scary picture.
- 20:46It sounds like the Dolby doctor. Yeah.
- 20:48Yeah. It's like yeah it's like that
- 20:50kind of thing. Okay.
- 20:52So the theory is that it could be smooth underneath that thing
- 20:55that you don't really see so maybe it makes sense.
- 20:58So, but that picture is freaky. Let's go find it now.
- 21:01But yeah, well I'll put this out when I put blinker that was a
- 21:06store in the storybook. Core annual or something.
- 21:09So, might be so recycling ideas. Well, I think Moffat like Rusty
- 21:13Davis is, well, aware of looking at the sort of spin-off stuff,
- 21:16like the lodger was a comic strip, was the blink was a Sally
- 21:20Sparrow was from the storybook, obviously, human nature.
- 21:24Family of blood was human agent, the book Jubilee became a
- 21:28garlic, Shakespeare code of comic strip.
- 21:32What's a ninth, dr. Patel's, human elements, Yeah.
- 21:38Anyway, so I have every podcast today.
- 21:41We preference the Shakespeare go.
- 21:42Yeah, obsessed. Well, the bloodtide, but I do
- 21:51finger. That's incredible World up.
- 21:55She's looking under the bed now. That doesn't sound crabber.
- 21:57Now, now it's on top of the bed. Yeah, it's this.
- 22:01This is so good. They get under it and then the
- 22:04bed just ever so slightly. I might do this now, you know,
- 22:07just Just wait on top of the page with the blanket.
- 22:09Over me. It, you floof.
- 22:13If you saw the first time, someone's called me that, you
- 22:17know, what you did, I think you, you really call it like that
- 22:23because I think in children's literature and things like that,
- 22:27I often say about dogs, who was his bit too scary for kids,
- 22:30Ashley. Some of those kids Tales Grimm's
- 22:33tales and Roald Dahl books. Yeah.
- 22:36My fucking chilling. I think they put doctor in the
- 22:40shade. Never mind.
- 22:41Share is Jack's trying to you know, right Perry.
- 22:48Have you read the tweets? I don't see the connection
- 23:01between the Danny pink child and Danny pink adult.
- 23:04They don't particularly feel like the same person I said well
- 23:07it's an implication in this the the the older Delhi.
- 23:09Pink layer is a descendant of Danny and Clark know that
- 23:13awesome pink. Yes.
- 23:15But this this kid is honey. This is supposed to be.
- 23:18Yeah. Younger Danny but I don't have
- 23:20kids. Yeah it doesn't really make
- 23:21sense that at all. Yeah well it's yeah.
- 23:25But this time time can be Rewritten that is dead.
- 23:32Less than its keep my way such a scary.
- 23:36Image Halloween, you are. You could just stand in the
- 23:41doorway with a blanket over your head and scare the life out of
- 23:44Kitty wigs Kenya. I've always terrifying.
- 23:47Yeah. It's and it's just how it's lit.
- 23:49As my God. Liz that shot.
- 23:50Yeah. That sure it's snakes up.
- 23:54Yeah. Oh no, these are written the
- 23:57story book. Can you find?
- 23:59Wally is fantastic. There is nowhere in this book.
- 24:07It seems, last time I went to Victoria Station, remark are
- 24:13said she will play. Where's Wally?
- 24:14I'll go down on to Concours and disguise myself amongst the
- 24:17people. You can up those stairs and try
- 24:19and find me. He didn't want to play weirdly
- 24:24even though it's a gag is the matter.
- 24:26The trying to find a hidden person.
- 24:29That's fine. Wally.
- 24:31Oh my God. Jeez.
- 24:32You're giving the most intelligent raging like this
- 24:39because it's quite dark or it feels dark.
- 24:42There's so many funny lines in it and most of them do come from
- 24:46Capaldi picking on Clara looking ugly, even though she looks so
- 24:50hot. You're talking to the wrong
- 24:54crowd. Are I know.
- 24:54I know. But I do think I do think this
- 24:57is moffatt's darkest season. Oh God.
- 25:00Yeah, yeah, yeah. If it feels like he was in a bad
- 25:03place where he's right? Yeah, that's it.
- 25:05If you want, I love it for that though.
- 25:07I love bits of it. And that's the thing.
- 25:09It's so mismatched the bits that work, our amazing.
- 25:13And the bits that don't just, I roll it.
- 25:17Yeah, it was a bit of a weird judgment to have everyone climb
- 25:21out of their graves turned into sidemen and then all blow up at
- 25:24the end. I mean I was yeah decision and
- 25:29you know, kill the moon, might have a good argument the end but
- 25:32the doctor just pissing off. It's a really what he does.
- 25:37It's not funny pig, then I kids. Yeah.
- 25:40It's, you know, people and often makes the point that Moffat has
- 25:44this thing about the doctor meeting, young girls, like Amy
- 25:48Pond, and Renee prepubescent stage, and then skips forward in
- 25:52time to a point where he can appropriately have sex with
- 25:55them. Well, what he's done here is the
- 25:58reverse. Yeah, she's met.
- 26:02Danny Pink as an adult where she can have sex with him and now
- 26:04his has a child. Well, I don't want to watch
- 26:06that. Thanks.
- 26:07Very much. Sorry, I'll be the say shake, it
- 26:11does a guy like his doctors to work well around children's
- 26:14identity. You know what the scenes with
- 26:16children? Usually very good about him
- 26:19apart from the rest of the night.
- 26:21Yeah, part from you and Angelina, isn't any more any
- 26:34more children? This is great.
- 26:36When the when it comes off and you just On make out what it is.
- 26:42It's the flu. We have a structure of this
- 26:52episode is so different, isn't it?
- 26:54Because we is quite as such a long scene, but the tension, but
- 26:58you don't like it. It's not a problem or it's just
- 27:02like a really. It's like a ghost story, isn't
- 27:04it? It's like a really Yeah, the
- 27:07amount of times you sit down to watch Doctor Who and you know
- 27:10exactly which structure you're going to follow, okay.
- 27:18I'll keep trying. Sorry.
- 27:23Yeah. Like I don't think I've ever
- 27:25particularly watched anything like this where it just is just
- 27:29going in One Direction but that's weird.
- 27:33And strange just snakes its way there.
- 27:36And just Clara doesn't realize, this is Danny yet.
- 27:39Oh does she. She doesn't really 100% know
- 27:42until then. So does she straight away?
- 27:47Yeah. Because she recognized the wave
- 27:48at the window. All right.
- 27:50Okay. Even though it looked nothing,
- 27:52like how deep it is the kids. Sorry, I've been put up a
- 28:03picture of a cat this time. Google can be very literal
- 28:07sometimes, you know, Oh, Jesus Christ.
- 28:12I think it's story about that a couple D know.
- 28:17That genuinely is what it looks like in that blood but in the
- 28:20background, when the towel comes off the head, that's what it is.
- 28:23Then yeah. I'll totally buy into everybody.
- 28:26Google the floof now you got the flu.
- 28:29In fact I'm going to do a Toby hey doke and anyone who's got an
- 28:32Alexa, Alexa, the floof. Oh, no.
- 28:36Wait. She's an oral thing and she, you
- 28:38know, she can. I just make a point and say
- 28:55about how absolutely gorgeous that Tardis console is of couple
- 28:59weeks, look at it? The levels in this so use that
- 29:11more than others. Don't they you actually see
- 29:14better how big when it's two shot, right?
- 29:16From the back there you know which one's my favorite a.
- 29:19Yeah I dread to think on Matt Smith's first.
- 29:23Well that is the hardest that is lounge Lounge.
- 29:35Airport lounge. Now at the time the sort of
- 29:39coral should seems really fresh and new but now it's just looks
- 29:43awful, doesn't it a tale of that Tardis?
- 29:47That was straight and there we go.
- 29:49She's back on her. Yeah, it's done the head.
- 29:51Smash this goes, is that is that what I look like from the back?
- 29:55And then the Ducks just goes, it's fine.
- 29:59Have any of you had a date or this was gone?
- 30:01Spectacularly wrong. No, I'm not a prick like Daddy
- 30:05Pig though. Oh I'm a total prick.
- 30:07So I've had a few, not surprising brood.
- 30:14Oh look a car and a she's dressed to kill.
- 30:17Is this the bit with a Spaceman comes early?
- 30:19I love this. When I first saw this, I thought
- 30:21that was going to be the doctor. Yeah, that's what it was going
- 30:24to be Clara. Is it Laura?
- 30:27No. No.
- 30:27Who is this? Awesome.
- 30:31I don't because it's a cool image and it makes a good Mo.
- 30:33Nobody is because it's funny. Yeah, the I'm going to try and
- 30:37be intellectual now for a second now Doctor Who is the
- 30:39juxtaposition of the extraordinary and the ordinary
- 30:43100%? Yeah well this absolutely
- 30:46encapsulates that doesn't it? Yeah.
- 30:49Although right back through the kitchen nobody like else.
- 30:53No, hello about. It'll that makes it fun.
- 30:56I've never seen you on the back foot so much to ever like You
- 31:01usually just know every intricate tiny detail this, you
- 31:05just see a bit on the back foot about listen, well, I mean,
- 31:08obviously you've examined in some depth so I shall give the
- 31:11stage to, you know, it's just weird.
- 31:15I don't know. I don't know too much about
- 31:16this. What?
- 31:17I mean I've watched it a few times but I haven't watched it
- 31:18over and over. Yeah honest I could probably do
- 31:22like flatliner. Mummy stories like that.
- 31:24I've seen him Lowe's or times. This is a bit leash.
- 31:28It's a bit like it's 10. The ones I'll go to when I'm in
- 31:31the mood but when you're in the mood for labyrinthine I always
- 31:35used to put this one on all the second.
- 31:37I would go for this one more than.
- 31:40Yeah, yeah I've enjoyed. I'm enjoying seeing all these
- 31:43layers coming from your mouse in the pair of you, you get better?
- 31:54Yeah. You know that space matter comes
- 31:57in the restaurant. Yeah.
- 31:59We're not talking about sets, your ankle moves in a
- 32:02restaurant. Honest to God, right?
- 32:04We're in this bar. Yeah, I haven't food and this
- 32:07bloody robot ways are my God. Boomed out to deliver food to a
- 32:12table? It was like a, it was like
- 32:14that's so cool. Robot a little smiley face.
- 32:17It had Burger and chips on this little plate thing and then just
- 32:21some top, it all off a human brought out food to us.
- 32:23I'll start excuse me. That's so cool.
- 32:27It was too busy for the robots, get for everyone.
- 32:29Yeah, timing. That's what we've got our own
- 32:31episode of listen. You know.
- 32:35Funny enough. Awesome pink jumped out of the
- 32:37robot as well. Yeah.
- 32:39So yeah. So the implication is that he's
- 32:42a descendant. Like this is the most
- 32:46unrealistic bit. Is that Danny?
- 32:48Pink will be having a go at her on a first date.
- 32:52I just any money in that situation just won't be doing
- 32:55that. You just take any shit she'd be
- 32:58saying. Yeah.
- 32:59You dress like that you would I know sorry you make a really
- 33:04good point about Orson Pig. He's a descendant.
- 33:08Yeah. So she so the implication is
- 33:10that they get together. And if it doesn't happen, does
- 33:15it know it's late but it clever way of using the actor again,
- 33:18you know? Yeah, it's never specifically
- 33:22it's not certainly says. I think they keep it vague
- 33:25enough. But yeah, I wouldn't know how it
- 33:28is. He's fucking Mafia this, right?
- 33:32So we're absolutely convinced. Yes.
- 33:34A doctor because the doctor that off.
- 33:38Yeah. What a surprise looks like Danny
- 33:41again. Yeah.
- 33:41And it. This episode has consistently
- 33:43wrong foot in. You don't know where it's going.
- 33:45You don't know what it's about but it's so entertaining.
- 33:48This is the Danny has pink of all the episodes.
- 33:52Yeah, this is his best episode by a million miles because at
- 33:57least he's playing sufferable, I think he's very good in dark
- 34:00water as well. Oh, that whole thing about her,
- 34:04taking the making the phone call and he dies on the phone call.
- 34:08I mean that's true. Yeah that's the best.
- 34:10Be well he's not well if he'd only pink isn't in this that
- 34:16much is awesome. Do you remember in last
- 34:19Christmas when he's wearing that Santa costume is He's got
- 34:22nothing on under the guise. Is best appearance.
- 34:25I think I actually I think yeah. Last Christmas is his best
- 34:30performance but I don't like it. No, not fun of that one.
- 34:33So good, so good. Mark Leslie.
- 34:37Well reconvene for that one and I'll tell you why you're wrong
- 34:40because every Christmas is last Christmas Lana.
- 34:47And that the fucking nervy, as at the end of that, where she's
- 34:50written down all the films. The influence that the episode.
- 34:54You got some bloody nerve Mafia other.
- 34:56Yeah, that's a nice touch. Now, this is midnight As Told in
- 35:00five minutes. It's me.
- 35:03Yeah, pretty much they're knocking on the door.
- 35:05Yeah. Have you heard Captain Jack
- 35:10volume 3 with river and Captain Jack?
- 35:15No, it's called orangey a and I'm not a huge fan of it and it
- 35:21goes jumps about all over the place.
- 35:23But there's one scene where referring Captain Jack a pissing
- 35:25about on a planet at the end of time and knock on the door to
- 35:29mess about with the person who lives in there and it's it's
- 35:32implied that it's this. Oh no.
- 35:39Who the hell wrote that script? Come on.
- 35:45It's all. It's all tongue-in-cheek and it
- 35:47ties into those different Doctor Who slows.
- 35:49Oh, do today. Employees are lots of different
- 35:52things. Yeah.
- 35:53And it implies that well, actually know, the whole story
- 35:56is the fact they're like River and Captain jacket actually in
- 35:58love and not river with the dog, which is just not opening the
- 36:04universe. There was no camera big enough
- 36:06for those who he goes to be in it at the same time.
- 36:08No, that's true. But yeah, so that's always there
- 36:12in the background that I watch this.
- 36:13This and this is pissing around the outside.
- 36:17I think it's worth noting that so far this season, we've had
- 36:22what deep breath, which was obviously the big hot
- 36:24introductory story. Then we had a bit of a almost
- 36:28like a psychological Thriller with it.
- 36:30Into the Dalek going, the Lou, there's a lot of discussion
- 36:33about hey, and then you had a very light comedy.
- 36:38Then you have this, which is weird as a Beard.
- 36:41Then you get time highest which is like hustle in space.
- 36:44They're really going all. Oh I love this about Doctor Who
- 36:47I love it when it's like the genres are all over the place so
- 36:51really hitting the variation at the more variation.
- 36:53The better Doctor Who is generally unfortunately there is
- 36:56a variation in the quality of the episode indeed which is a
- 37:00change. But I think it's even more of a
- 37:04problem in no idea because I think nine feels a bit samey.
- 37:09Yeah, well, it's a bit, of course, the two parties that
- 37:12kill nine. Really, it's just people that
- 37:15absolutely love it, you know, declare knowing one of the best
- 37:19seats. I think, I think it really
- 37:24suffers a lull between the woman who lived face the raven, like
- 37:28them for five episodes. Back to the bar, the zygon
- 37:31two-parter in the seat. No.
- 37:33More in formerly lived at they just all not great.
- 37:36Yeah, I definitely wasn't watching live then by that
- 37:39point, definitely not well. Oh, well, you've you having a
- 37:49life that's just like I was like, oh it'll be it'll be on
- 37:53iPlayer for you really should know what's here.
- 37:55I wasn't like, I have to watch on the nie.
- 37:58It definitely Style with a new series coming out.
- 38:00No, then I went back to it. I don't know.
- 38:02It just It's just around that time.
- 38:04I was like super, a lot of people did this tonight, I
- 38:07missed a few. Yeah, I don't know.
- 38:10I'm purpose just missed a few. I couldn't get self-loathing
- 38:14phase even though I didn't like it, I'll still watched it live.
- 38:17That's had so much bills of about having sent before have a
- 38:20set went out and couldn't watch it.
- 38:22Cause Rachel's sister was up in Leeds.
- 38:24So we didn't get around to watch this about 2:30 in the morning
- 38:28and it was one of the best fucking experiences like been
- 38:32waiting. Ignore my phone all night
- 38:34watching it sat in bed, all on my own just write our Michael.
- 38:37What an experience that one. It's a weird one because I'll
- 38:41acknowledge that Heaven Sent is one of the best written and made
- 38:45Doctor. Who stories ever?
- 38:46I never re-watch it. Oh, I know.
- 38:48What's that one up quite a bit? I watch it all the time.
- 38:51Absolutely. Have to be absolutely be in the
- 38:53mood for that one. Now watch it all the time.
- 38:59Whereas, you know, love and monsters, and the rings of
- 39:02akhaten a time, I watch them all the time.
- 39:23You know, what would be the most agonizing experience for Mark?
- 39:27The power of us right now, sign the long song, right?
- 39:42Okay. Clara It took me awhile to warm
- 39:48to her. I sort of accepted her as a
- 39:51companion, maybe Dave, the doctor.
- 39:53Well that's five rain in like those questions but yeah, I
- 39:57don't know. I just took a bit of time
- 39:59because of the difference of characters that you saw her at
- 40:05the beginning and then yeah I think by series 9 I think she
- 40:11should have gone in last Christmas.
- 40:13And then we should have, she should have moved on, she
- 40:17outstayed our welcome, but this point she's great.
- 40:21They didn't like nany Poppins Clara, I thought it just took me
- 40:28a while to, I just didn't you just didn't even know who she
- 40:31was, especially in bells of Saint.
- 40:32John's, especially very boring. I was just like, I like you're a
- 40:36bit more in time, really? I think it's tight as since
- 40:39she's left. I've liked a bit more and it's
- 40:42probably because I was so scared of her fucking up the cannon at
- 40:44the time, because it really masses, and she concedes get
- 40:48filled up. So, without dude, some food to
- 40:50the cathode. Yeah, she was just too.
- 40:53Yeah, she just had too much either, but they're not by like,
- 40:57At lines, I love employee. Will you laughter?
- 40:58Hi Wade and in hide. Yeah, yeah but it just took a
- 41:03bit of time but I love the way that I think neither one of you
- 41:07is going to agree with me on that.
- 41:09I think the best Capaldi Coleman episode in terms of their
- 41:13chemistry, is the first a shorter episode.
- 41:19Just I know there you go watch them in there, so that's fun,
- 41:23funny bits, but it's not is on point.
- 41:29That's I just sex agree. What a surprise.
- 41:48Good. It is.
- 41:50So if I do, the worst moment is awesome.
- 41:53Here in death in heaven, where she goes.
- 41:55I'm the doctor and I was like, please no, no, don't tell me.
- 41:58We're going here and they had a face in the credits.
- 42:01I was like, oh my God, just a very weird bit of doctor.
- 42:05Hey, that isn't it really? When you think back to it very
- 42:08straight, what was weird is that cyber brick?
- 42:13Yeah, I do sort of agree, like, it would have been really good
- 42:18for us to the even last Christmas but that he loved that
- 42:21joyous end until after Christmas.
- 42:23Were they getting a second chance to get the universe good?
- 42:26And you wouldn't get entirely, you wouldn't get the heaven-sent
- 42:31without car, either you don't get it.
- 42:33But I think her exes are the law of diminishing returns because I
- 42:38think calm face the Raven we were Have to wait ten agonizing
- 42:43minutes of her standing around waiting to die.
- 42:46I will you just get on with it already.
- 42:47This is worse than end of time. Yeah, I think face Raven would
- 42:51have been a good. I don't think it was a been a
- 42:53good way to end, but I don't think they should have done it
- 42:56in the first place. Going off, having a lesbian
- 43:00affair with her shoulder and that Dino probably I'd say
- 43:02twice. As though, people think it's
- 43:04smoking that week. The thing that ruins Face Unlock
- 43:07poster over what ruins is knowing that Clara doesn't die.
- 43:11Face the Raven. You are wishing no, because it's
- 43:14that moment where she's built up throughout.
- 43:16She's like acting like the doctor, she's getting more and
- 43:19more confident. She's right up there and she's
- 43:20like, right, well, we can fix it and then suddenly she can't.
- 43:23And that's a damn. Well, I just don't like it.
- 43:25I think a character as big as close as she get killed by a
- 43:28crow and anything that I think he cuts that point and then
- 43:34she's not and she's I don't think companions should die.
- 43:38Well, it's like Bill Gates have that massive old blow dinner.
- 43:41The most likeable this is so good.
- 43:52Do as you are told, was that your Scottish accent?
- 43:56Oh, it's me attempt. Yeah, you don't know what you
- 43:59see, is there something there or not?
- 44:04That whole sequence, I with the banging.
- 44:06It's I think it's so unsettling. That's it.
- 44:09Because it's all silence. Isn't a apart from the Yeah, it
- 44:12seems like usik is there a creature out there or is it just
- 44:16the pipes? And there's always that second
- 44:18answer? Yeah.
- 44:20So I think, I think so. Now, I've got the real.
- 44:23It's the flu. It's everybody.
- 44:27Go Google the tenth episode of the Storyteller, the soldier and
- 44:36death. Mmm.
- 44:37Yeah, that beta with a massive eyes.
- 44:39Yes. Terrifying.
- 44:43But there are some things in the depths of people's minds that
- 44:48why they have to make it onto the TV.
- 44:50That's so I don't worry about to get them out, but because when
- 44:55series 8 just before it went out, the first five episodes got
- 44:57leaked in the online, all of this chamber, this, oh, yeah,
- 45:02the first five full episodes got leaked in, like, black-and-white
- 45:06online. So people could watch the.
- 45:08And I remember people talking about the On scene.
- 45:12I didn't know what it was. I just knew the barn scene was a
- 45:15big thing as so when they landed in a barn I was really excited
- 45:21and I do really like to see although interestingly enough
- 45:24this is Capaldi's third multi doctor story in Five Guys
- 45:29because if I'd say the doctor deep breath and I people would
- 45:32say that don't quite trust him as the doctor and if you count
- 45:36fires of Pompeii, it's just for thin 6.
- 45:42I don't know if they needed to have the barn.
- 45:43See I don't know if they needed to go there as I said it's so
- 45:47it's so weird and so twisty don't know where it's going.
- 45:51It makes sense to do something, just weird and it needs to end
- 45:54in a sort of a grandiose way but do something totally weird.
- 45:59Don't want to come back and see the doc scenario?
- 46:01That's what. Yeah, that's what I have.
- 46:03Brought you a really nice to have.
- 46:07Someone say all fear makes Companions of all of us which is
- 46:10exactly. He says in an unearthly child.
- 46:13So it's an early child has been influenced by Clara of yes.
- 46:17This is where it's just too much.
- 46:19No, it's absolutely. It's a beautiful responsible for
- 46:22picking out the tarbush. He's rushed for saving all those
- 46:25different. It's just too much.
- 46:27It's a beautiful and sequence. When she's when she's telling
- 46:32him that that and the whole thing was that he was he was
- 46:35going after like what's hidden out there and what the hidden
- 46:38creatures. And it's like it doesn't matter
- 46:41as long. Long as you're scared of it and,
- 46:42you know, it's okay to be scared that that is like the theme of
- 46:46the episode and it's just done within this beautiful little n
- 46:50sequence its, but maybe on its own, but there's so much of this
- 46:58with Clara and given her pivotal moments in the doctors, like and
- 47:01it's like, my feet. Just can't leave it alone, you
- 47:03might as well. I'm gonna make this companion.
- 47:06The most important companion. Well, you you do that.
- 47:09Well done, she's still fucking boring.
- 47:11Yeah, but if you think even soul, if you take the other
- 47:14stories out of it because at the end of the day, when you sit
- 47:16down to watch, listen you're not.
- 47:18I'm not particularly thinking of all the other effects that Clara
- 47:21is hard and I think that's why at the time, it felt really
- 47:23annoying because you're like, oh my God, she's so influential.
- 47:27If I sit down to watch listen and not think you will see also
- 47:29out doing the time warranty also up to do this.
- 47:32So, she's just need this thing about Clara Reyes is Jenna
- 47:36Coleman is a brilliant actress and I've seen, you know, go on.
- 47:40Yeah, she's amazing. We were well, what happened
- 47:42here? She's brilliant accident up to
- 47:45her, it's no use. But I mean, she's written as a
- 47:48different character every other week that's not a fault.
- 47:51I think she always gives a really good performance.
- 47:54Maybe she's eating well, but the core of nightmare in silver is
- 47:58not the color of listen. Yeah, that's that's not her
- 48:02fault. No, no.
- 48:03I know that but but also you can just you can explain it either.
- 48:07I think like the one the cloth at the doctor brought out the
- 48:10time stream at the end of the day of the doctor was just
- 48:13slightly different to the one he'd been traveling with which
- 48:15is why she suddenly a teacher. I do think she's a little
- 48:19generic but she's meant to be generic in that series servant
- 48:24but they succeeded. Well done.
- 48:26Yeah it's she was perfectly meant to be today.
- 48:29Are this bit? Says he's never going to make
- 48:31it. So I'm Lord God, it's the chills
- 48:34I got the time because you smash me young William, Hartnell ones,
- 48:36need to complain Kitt. Yes.
- 48:38Yeah. You know what happened after
- 48:39they don't be anyone thought. Oh, fuck those.
- 48:42Have you ever heard of the BBC past doctor Adventures divided
- 48:45loyalties and that as written. By Gary Russell featuring The
- 48:49Fabulous sequence, Gallifrey 90210, the doctor in the academy
- 48:54with brucer and the Rani and the master and the Monk and they're
- 48:59all hanging out as teenagers. I think that happened just after
- 49:01this bit, okay, what's this, A could of just wrapped it all up?
- 49:06The doctor goes out, finds the floof calls it, Susan and on
- 49:10Earth. People Who series starting again
- 49:14mad about flu shoe and yeah, you know, this bit, which makes
- 49:17Clara the monster under the bed. Now, nice, clever long.
- 49:22And it's quite a leap to, like, believe in the fact that she was
- 49:27actually grab the foot. But for some reason, you just
- 49:29believe that she would do that. Well, you know, she's obviously
- 49:36got a thing about boys, but shit.
- 49:42Cheering Danny Pink as a child. You know what if that were me
- 49:45though, I think I just get straight back in the bed.
- 49:48Duh, interesting. If you were 14,
- 50:02what are you doing? Listen, child.
- 50:17I was watching this with Chris because he thought clothes
- 50:23underneath everyone's Birds. It's got big spiders and cracki,
- 50:56moon egg. okay, off against desperately underwriter that
- 51:03episode And they reconvene to do that one, then.
- 51:09All right. We have no II think in agree.
- 51:15Agree, disagree, or agree. No, that's not what I meant.
- 51:17We can disagree, agreeably. Oh, guess this.
- 51:21I think this ends in this speech is gorgeous in.
- 51:23The whole sequence is done so well again, look at the lighting
- 51:27that's shown so. Well, isn't it?
- 51:28Yeah, it's one memorable image after another story.
- 51:32Yeah. I do like the fact that it's all
- 51:37just also ambiguous all of it. Yeah, find out the odd.
- 51:41But there is there is there is a point to it.
- 51:43Is that it's all right to be afraid that was the message so
- 51:46it's not like, it's just empty. Thank God.
- 51:49I've been living my last. All right, then I'm terrified
- 51:52every time I walk out the door. Why do you seem bring these
- 51:54days? The trains.
- 51:56Don't run no longer put the heating on, it's terrifying as
- 51:59that. Let's see there.
- 52:00We've got our little naughty doctor story Oscar No, John her.
- 52:07I do like that. They're I like how it links to
- 52:09the bomb. I mean I'll just happy to see
- 52:11John her whenever but then Center I need to put that in
- 52:14saying that you know, casual viewer and that.
- 52:17Yeah. Like, what?
- 52:18Yes. Yeah.
- 52:18But they'll doctor the doctor was quite recently it's not a
- 52:22weirdly old called but I do like the fact that I could probably
- 52:26do like a hug because I'll test the tenets of Matt Smith for
- 52:29all. Like, oh well I'm not fucking
- 52:31scene at the end of deaf deafened, which is the best
- 52:33beer. Oh, yeah.
- 52:35And he says it's just another way to hide your face.
- 52:37I cried my eyes out when the first Watch that I was pleased
- 52:41to have seen was in it because I hope climax in the graveyard.
- 52:44Just left me very cold. I love you.
- 52:52I such a lovely ending. Again, I like to go learn about
- 52:57the lighting below. Basically, they're basically lit
- 52:59up so you can see as they're always there.
- 53:01It's beautiful. You forget how short period
- 53:04cloudy and his hair at the beginning.
- 53:06Yeah, even if it's basically balls, well, may I say in the
- 53:11words of Terrance dicks, are you, you gonna say this, you
- 53:13could always tell where you are, Peter Capaldi, theorem my by the
- 53:19length of this before, I think, Danny and Florrie For our work
- 53:26here, in a way that they don't really were made like ever
- 53:29again. Yeah, yeah, totally agree.
- 53:31The, you feel like you're on a winner now.
- 53:33You're like my God, the show might be back on track.
- 53:38Look, unless the soldier without the gun in the bath.
- 53:41I just it's brilliant right? Mmm.
- 53:47It just it really shows what he can do when he's unhampered by
- 53:51Ox it that you know you're talking about it being a
- 53:55reaction to what he's done before.
- 53:56That is a reaction to the fact that he hasn't been able to do
- 53:59anything weird for years and he's finally just being able to
- 54:02go mental. And again I think again he gave
- 54:06himself heaven-sent, didn't lie to ya.
- 54:08Just going to write a great bit of Science Fiction and
- 54:11extremists is the same. Like I know it's like you've got
- 54:15the main story about the Ation Theory, but it flips between
- 54:21that in the Missy thing. Not I want to say that, well,
- 54:25but it's structurally weird as well.
- 54:27In the same way that these two are you really happy?
- 54:30We're not all reaches out and his hand vanishes.
- 54:34Yeah, I was there simulations man.
- 54:36I'm Anna tells the whole story on his head.
- 54:38Oh, Jesus Christ. The caretaker Stark witness to
- 54:410. How is Tommy Wiseau Q, Garnet
- 54:47with the thing on his head? I'm sorry, yeah, sorry.
- 54:52Oh sorry. Yeah, so yeah.
- 55:03Well look, we've reached the end of this unusual.
- 55:07Absolutely asked us all now to name three things a piece, we've
- 55:11got nine things to get through and we're going to start with
- 55:15mr. My Roland's three things.
- 55:18No no just one. 10. And then me one and then Loop
- 55:24one. Okay.
- 55:25I'm going to say, well, I wrote a few things down like to
- 55:28describe it and I put it as like a, it's a thoughtful episode is
- 55:34and you can make a bit what you, what you will.
- 55:38If there's something there, if there's not an I like that.
- 55:41He goes ambiguous is the word. I'm going to say that.
- 55:48Danny Pink's bomb. Looks very nice and I was the
- 55:51fastest I've you I honestly think it's one of the best ideas
- 55:58I've seen Doctor Who do a pretty good journey TV show do.
- 56:01It's just I don't even know how you think of it.
- 56:05I think of that the idea of a creature that's evolved if
- 56:09creature evolved to do that and to do this, then why it's not
- 56:12one evolved to be hidden. It's just so good and it makes
- 56:16it all really It'll just a fascinating idea to watch
- 56:22unfold, which ties into the ambiguity bit a bit as well and
- 56:26the whole episode is just spooky and fascinating.
- 56:29Yeah, you could take out if you took out like the Doctor Who
- 56:31element it would make its own ghost stories like by story.
- 56:35Yeah. Indefinite you could probably
- 56:37build on that and maybe a whole day's that creepy thing.
- 56:40Yeah. Yeah.
- 56:42Menacing all the kids. What are some other thing is
- 56:45that shot of the thing on the bed?
- 56:48So about out of focus, what is it?
- 56:51Is it the fish another chop? I don't think it's another
- 56:55child. That's playing a drink.
- 56:59It's quite a stretch to say it's the case.
- 57:02It was a very creepy pigs so just skulk away.
- 57:06Okay, that's very strange thing for kids to do as well.
- 57:10Yeah, I got you something now. Yeah, I'm gonna say Douglas
- 57:16MacKinnon this direction. Which I know that's quite a
- 57:19quite easy pick, but I want you to remember his first Doctor,
- 57:22Who what's the sontaran stratagem and the poison Sky?
- 57:25Hey was using those disturbing purple when yellow Jill's
- 57:29throughout the entire thing to create a bit of atmosphere and
- 57:32failing dismally. And we've got to this point here
- 57:35where every single scene is shot and lit with such care like his
- 57:41apprenticeship and boy, goes on to do incredible work after
- 57:45this. So yeah, the direction Don't
- 57:48really remember his name life. He said he was a doctor, he
- 57:50director wouldn't have limbo eat a day.
- 57:53It is because for most, oh yeah, he's a cold war.
- 58:01No, I just haven't remembered is not, I'm not big on husband's by
- 58:05think it's directed really well and that sequence worthy the
- 58:09flick through the from the spaceship to build the
- 58:13restaurant to go to the hospital is is really good.
- 58:17It makes It very seamless. Well, I'm sorry doing everything
- 58:22from yes, I know it's not the end sequence which beautifully
- 58:28ties this story, which looks like it hasn't.
- 58:32It's gone. Nowhere or it's just purposely
- 58:34empty an ambiguous into a lovely thematic talent.
- 58:38And if fear fear bringing people together, fear bringing the best
- 58:41out of people and how it doesn't matter to be scared of something
- 58:46is really good and I love leap. Of the really experimental
- 58:50episode. I'll see you again.
- 58:54Three-stall the material, Peter Capaldi is given like that
- 58:57opening monologue. All of those moments.
- 59:01This is where he really is the doctor preserve.
- 59:05I'll say, well then I'm going to say, I wouldn't believe you.
- 59:10If you told me that midnight could be condensed down into
- 59:12five minutes and that it could be as suspenseful but that whole
- 59:16sequence and the Future and weird enough is done with one
- 59:21sound effect, the banging, but apart from that apart, from this
- 59:23music, and I don't think there's any sound effects at all, and
- 59:26it's just done with the acting and that banging.
- 59:30It's so creepy that bit and I think it's very easy.
- 59:35I said it's a no commentary the other day, it's very easy to
- 59:37create atmosphere in the past. I think it's pretty easy to
- 59:40create atmosphere in the prison where doctors who often falls
- 59:44down is where it starts to create atmosphere again.
- 59:47Sure, You can convey visible anyway, you know, and it just
- 59:51bums, but boy, a boy, when they get it, right?
- 59:54They get it right. And they get this right, mmm,
- 59:57Luke, I'll finish with the comma Z.
- 59:59Then I think it's not something you instantly think, is it if it
- 1:00:03listens not on your instinct is full of Comedy.
- 1:00:06But it's I mean we didn't even touch on the when the way it
- 1:00:09comes over and says water for the table and Clark, I still
- 1:00:11probably dig for it. That's a great Capaldi's.
- 1:00:16Got lonely rely on. And it's just great, even the
- 1:00:27worst, Wally Bear, That Knocking the kid out to go to see it's
- 1:00:31full of really, really funny bits.
- 1:00:34And yet, it's such a like, a, quite a serious, and a spooky
- 1:00:38story, which is perfect doctor. Isn't it, though, I like to
- 1:00:41combine them into something. That is really works.
- 1:00:45Together is beautiful Doctor Who Confidant, of course I think so
- 1:00:51much because I think come Series 7 of the new series.
- 1:00:57You might think, you know what? They've kind of done everything
- 1:01:01that everything's variation on The Invasion story of the
- 1:01:05history story. You know, the Contemporary story
- 1:01:08with the family and and all of that there and this I think is
- 1:01:11the shot in the arm that the show needed to show the actually
- 1:01:15could still experiment. And Prize you and those who
- 1:01:19needs to not mind or about things like that, he needs to do
- 1:01:22that Warriors gay every now and again and he's a shot in the arm
- 1:01:26of creativity and I think it hits again with flat line this
- 1:01:30season. Yeah, I'd say I take the agree
- 1:01:34that it's not something I've actually thought about, but that
- 1:01:37was probably the reason I lost it so much when it went out
- 1:01:40because I've been watching Doctor Who for years, and this
- 1:01:42was the first thing that felt so different.
- 1:01:45So fresh that for so long. How refreshing after an entire
- 1:01:49evening of disagreeing with me - hi.
- 1:01:53Well, yeah, more or less. Unless, caretaker the scoldings
- 1:01:58Blitzer, their most terrifying force in the Galaxy.
- 1:02:03What was? I Robot Ivan?
- 1:02:05I thought, I don't deal with Michael.
- 1:02:06And so, on, may I ask you before you go, we got a long record and
- 1:02:13style will be started at 7:00, is nearly 11:00 Well, we go
- 1:02:18next. Oh, I mean that has yet to be
- 1:02:23determined so just coming. Well I'll tell you what, choose
- 1:02:31a Christmas special. I will choose.
- 1:02:40This is great book. Also.
- 1:02:41Nice. The Runaway Bride.
- 1:02:43Yeah, no was done that. You like it, though.
- 1:02:46I'll save it for the podcast. Oh, you bitch.
- 1:02:51Well gentlemen, thank you very much.
- 1:02:53It's 11:00, it's time for bed. Let's hope there's nothing on
- 1:02:56top of it. Hmm, underneath your underneath
- 1:02:59or on top, unless it's quiet. That's your personal say.
- 1:03:03All right.
