- 0:09Your travels have brought you to the Surfing Your Edge podcast, where we explore what it
- 0:14takes to create the bigger, bolder, badass life you know you were born for.
- 0:19Not a life that simply looks good on paper, and not another spin on the self-help hamster
- 0:25wheel.
- 0:25If you're ready for more joy, more peace, and more contribution, you're in the right
- 0:31place.
- 0:32I'm Kristine Goad, the Surfing Your Edge coach.
- 0:35Let's get surfing.
- 0:38Hello and welcome to episode two of Surfing Your Edge.
- 0:42Thank you for being here.
- 0:44Today I want to talk to you a little bit about the framework that I have to help you surf
- 0:50your edge.
- 0:51And if you're still getting used to the concept of surfing your edge, remember that is the
- 0:57way you continue to grow, is to be out on the edge of what feels comfortable, right?
- 1:05And to stay out there a little bit longer than you might want to, so that you actually
- 1:10expand and expand and expand your comfort zone.
- 1:14And a lot of people talk about getting out of their comfort zone, but it's another thing
- 1:18to actually do it.
- 1:19So today let's talk about the framework I have for getting out of your comfort zone
- 1:28and staying out there on the edge.
- 1:31My framework is called Bigger Bolder Badass.
- 1:34And the first part is bigger.
- 1:37And in that you learn to stop reality sizing your dreams.
- 1:43We'll talk about that later again in the podcast, but basically we need to remember what it
- 1:49was like to be able to dream.
- 1:51A lot of us have lost that skill.
- 1:54And even if we do dream, we may not have any hope that those dreams might come true.
- 2:01So I want you in the bigger, in the bigger part of the framework, I want you to dream
- 2:09big and dream into what feels exciting, right?
- 2:15What would make being on this planet right now totally worth it?
- 2:20We are in a difficult time right now, right?
- 2:25Things have been crazy for a while and they seem to get crazier.
- 2:30And if we're going to be here, we may as well make the most of it.
- 2:34So what would make you super excited to be here?
- 2:38What is the thing you've always wanted to try and never given yourself permission?
- 2:43What is something that you would want, that you would be proud to tell people you had
- 2:51done or experimented with?
- 2:55And maybe even this part is about thinking about what legacy you want to leave.
- 3:00Even if you don't have children, what story do you want to leave behind, right?
- 3:05So the first part is to really let yourself remember how to dream and how to dream bigger
- 3:13than you've let yourself dream in a really long time.
- 3:17And if it's too challenging, you can dream this much bigger and then this much bigger.
- 3:25So you don't have to go all the way to the edge if that's too terrifying.
- 3:29But to start dreaming bigger than you are currently.
- 3:34The second part of the framework is the bolder part.
- 3:37And this part is critical because when you start dreaming bigger, that's when all of
- 3:48those little voices in your head that you've been accumulating your entire life come in
- 3:54and say, Oh, who do you think you are?
- 3:57You can't do that.
- 3:59That is not for you.
- 4:00Other people might be able to do that, but not you.
- 4:02Or you're not ready for that.
- 4:05Or it's too late for that, honey.
- 4:07You should have done that a long time ago.
- 4:09All of those voices click in and let you know that, hey, you are not good enough.
- 4:17This is not for you.
- 4:20And what I want to tell you is that everybody has those voices and they never go away.
- 4:30And so that was my, you know, wicked witch cackle there because they don't go away.
- 4:39But there are skills you can use to quiet them down and actually to recognize why they're there.
- 4:48They aren't there to keep you small, necessarily.
- 4:51They are there to keep you safe, right?
- 4:54They don't care if you're miserable.
- 4:56It's a part of your psychology that doesn't care if you're miserable.
- 5:02It just wants you to keep living.
- 5:04And it doesn't want you to do anything too scary.
- 5:08And for a long time, for most of human history,
- 5:14ostracism and not being accepted by your community meant death.
- 5:19So a lot of times we are still clued in to that voice that's saying,
- 5:27oh, people aren't going to like that.
- 5:29If you do that, people are going to laugh.
- 5:31If you do that, you're going to make people mad.
- 5:34And that actually equates to dying in your brain's history, right?
- 5:42So it's there to keep you safe.
- 5:46So you can recognize those little voices, and you can learn to name them,
- 5:52give them sweet little names or ugly little names.
- 5:56And you can draw pictures of what this voice looks like and name it.
- 6:02And then you can pat it on its little head and say,
- 6:05thank you so much for your input and scoot it out the door, right?
- 6:10I've heard you.
- 6:11I appreciate you.
- 6:12Thank you for trying to take care of me.
- 6:15But you're not welcome here right now because I'm doing this, right?
- 6:19I'm the only voice that matters right now.
- 6:22So that takes practice.
- 6:24And it's one of those practices that you have to continually practice.
- 6:28And that's part of why we're going to have this podcast, right?
- 6:31To help you stay in that bolder phase where you're constantly working with
- 6:40that voice that wants you to be afraid and stay still.
- 6:44And really, I'd love it, this is a big challenge,
- 6:49but I'd really love it if you could start to make friends with your fear.
- 6:53If you could stop seeing fear as a stop sign,
- 6:57and start seeing it more as a sign that you're on the right path, right?
- 7:02If this is worth being afraid of,
- 7:04there's probably a good payoff at the other end if you stick with it.
- 7:09So one of the phrases you'll hear me say is make friends with your fear.
- 7:13And that's what we do in the bolder phase of my framework.
- 7:18Next, we get the badass framework part of the framework.
- 7:23And the badass part, again, part of you is probably going to be like,
- 7:29oh, I don't need to be a badass.
- 7:31I'm not a badass.
- 7:33That's not part of who I am.
- 7:35But badassery.
- 7:38In my, actually, the first group that I led through my Bigger Bolder Badass format,
- 7:45my program called Bigger Bolder Badass,
- 7:47I asked them what they thought badass meant.
- 7:50And the conclusion was that being a badass is letting yourself be fully who you are,
- 7:58and not apologizing for it.
- 8:01And that's what I think badass is, right?
- 8:04It's letting yourself be the fullest expression of who you came to this planet to be.
- 8:11And I'm gonna do a little side note here.
- 8:14I believe there are all of these people,
- 8:16and I was one of them for many, many, many years,
- 8:19who are looking for their purpose, right?
- 8:21There are people, oh, I just, I don't know why I'm here.
- 8:24I don't know what I'm supposed to do.
- 8:25What you're supposed to do is be the fullest expression of who you are.
- 8:31The universe learns about itself through you.
- 8:35So the more you you can be, the wider the lens, the more it learns and grows and evolves.
- 8:43So being badass is you living your purpose,
- 8:48and not giving a shit what anybody else says.
- 8:55And that can be a challenge.
- 8:58Again, this is all practice, right?
- 9:00Bigger, bolder, badass is a framework,
- 9:02but you don't just go through it once, and then you're through it, right?
- 9:05You have to keep circling.
- 9:07You get through the dreaming,
- 9:09and then you learn to make friends with your fear,
- 9:11and then you learn to live a more bold, badass life.
- 9:15And then you're like, oh, what's the next vision?
- 9:18And then what do I have to do with my voices to get to that level?
- 9:22And then what does this unfolding look like, right?
- 9:26So it's a constant cycle.
- 9:28We never get to go through it just once and then be done.
- 9:32So the other thing I encourage when you're in the badass part of the framework
- 9:38is that you run experiments.
- 9:42And I'm always experimenting with something that scares me, right?
- 9:53Which story to tell here?
- 9:57There are a million.
- 9:58But basically, I am always trying to figure out what sounds fun and also scary.
- 10:10And right now, for this summer,
- 10:13this summer is one of those apparently my summer of yes
- 10:17that I didn't expect to be my summer of yes.
- 10:20But I have started rowing, like sculling with a rowing team.
- 10:27And I have been taking beginner adult tap classes.
- 10:32And I just signed up for a flash mob.
- 10:38So I'll be dancing in a flash mob.
- 10:41And I started this podcast on a whim because a friend said,
- 10:45hey, come do this podcast journey with me.
- 10:50So you don't have to do all of that all at once.
- 10:53But I'm one of those people who likes to design little experiments,
- 10:59see what that feels like.
- 11:01And if I fail, that's part of the process, right?
- 11:08We don't get taught as children that failure is part of the process.
- 11:12We, especially as girls, learn that you need to look perfect all the time.
- 11:18And that is not the case in the badass framework, right?
- 11:24We are trying new things.
- 11:27We're laughing at ourselves.
- 11:29We're picking ourselves up and going, okay, that didn't work.
- 11:33What's the next possibility?
- 11:37So again, it's just constant experimentation.
- 11:41And not just for the idea that you've always got to be more
- 11:48or better, it's that how can I live more fully?
- 11:54How can I enjoy my life more fully?
- 11:57How can I find more wonder in this life?
- 12:01How can I leave more good stuff in the world behind me, right?
- 12:09So I'm not one of those people who's just always telling you,
- 12:14you've got to be more, you've got to be better.
- 12:17Bigger, bolder, badass is not a way of saying you are not good enough.
- 12:21It's a way of saying there is so much more for you to experience
- 12:25and enjoy and love about life.
- 12:28And I want to help you go find those things.
- 12:31So I hope you'll come back and stick around for this podcast
- 12:35as we try out and further discuss the bigger, bolder, badass framework.
