- 0:00Speaker 1: Kevin Great from the UK gooborning toy Hi there, Andrew
- 0:02Speaker 1: Hio mat So. Every the week in UK authority said
- 0:05Speaker 1: stay at home. So how because the weather was going
- 0:08Speaker 1: to be so bad? So was it so bad? And
- 0:10Speaker 1: did everyone stay at home?
- 0:12Speaker 2: Well? I know not everyone did, of course, people can't
- 0:15Speaker 2: cancel the travel plans. Travel was in absolute chaos, as
- 0:18Speaker 2: you can imagine. This was the fourth named storm that
- 0:21Speaker 2: the winter. It has claimed that we know at least
- 0:23Speaker 2: two lives. Some gusts up to almost one hundred miles
- 0:27Speaker 2: an hour, so you're looking at one hundred and fifty
- 0:29Speaker 2: kilometers an hour were recorded on Saturday and then again
- 0:33Speaker 2: early Sunday morning. The deaths were in the northwest of
- 0:36Speaker 2: England in Lancashire, when a tree fell onto a vehicle
- 0:40Speaker 2: and a man in his late forties died. There was
- 0:42Speaker 2: another death in the West Midlands, same thing, a separate incident,
- 0:45Speaker 2: somebody driving and a tree falling on them. The gusts
- 0:48Speaker 2: have slightly died down, but the problem now is this
- 0:51Speaker 2: storm with the strong winds was accompanied by a lot
- 0:54Speaker 2: of rain, and indeed the previous named storm had only
- 0:58Speaker 2: just left the country. The soil is really, really soggy already,
- 1:02Speaker 2: and I'm afraid now there is a big danger of flooding.
- 1:05Speaker 2: There are some fifty four flood warnings for riverside communities
- 1:10Speaker 2: in England alone, and that means that flooding is likely.
- 1:14Speaker 2: And in Wales where I'm talking to you from this morning,
- 1:17Speaker 2: the ground really really wet. There are lots of tree
- 1:20Speaker 2: surgeons out trying to keep the roads open. As I said,
- 1:23Speaker 2: the winds have died down. The big, big risk now
- 1:26Speaker 2: is all the water that is collecting and going down
- 1:28Speaker 2: into the river.
- 1:29Speaker 1: And indeed there's a change. Really I never used to
- 1:32Speaker 1: remember England flooding and now you do.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and you know, more development of course, and
- 1:39Speaker 2: more people and therefore a bigger demand on the services
- 1:43Speaker 2: and also fewer places for the water to seek down
- 1:45Speaker 2: into the soil.
- 1:47Speaker 1: All right, let's go to the Netherlands where there was
- 1:49Speaker 1: an explosion at a block of flats. So tell me
- 1:51Speaker 1: about that story.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that was in the Hague and at least five
- 1:56Speaker 2: people have died four others have been injured. Now, this
- 2:00Speaker 2: was an explosion of a block of flats. It's a
- 2:02Speaker 2: three story building and it is said that there were
- 2:07Speaker 2: up to twenty people in the flats at the time.
- 2:10Speaker 2: That would mean therefore that eleven or more are missing,
- 2:13Speaker 2: and that's the big concern. There is so much debris
- 2:15Speaker 2: around the place, Andrew that the big crane has been
- 2:18Speaker 2: brought in to try and get lift off these huge blocks.
- 2:22Speaker 2: But there is a big concern this death toll will
- 2:24Speaker 2: increase significantly now at the moment, the authorities are not
- 2:28Speaker 2: saying what they believe to be the cause. However, one
- 2:31Speaker 2: eyewitness describes a car driving off at very high speed
- 2:35Speaker 2: shortly before the explosion. That that is an unconfirmed report.
- 2:39Speaker 2: But yeah, we believe there's to be at least five
- 2:42Speaker 2: flats that have been completely destroyed in this explosion, which
- 2:45Speaker 2: has left a lot of debr for the authorities to
- 2:48Speaker 2: try to get through. But I'm afraid more and more
- 2:50Speaker 2: this is proving and I think not to be a
- 2:53Speaker 2: rescue operation. If there are more bodies under there, this
- 2:56Speaker 2: is proven to be a recovery operation.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Kevin Grave from the UK.
- 2:59Speaker 2: I thank you Imagine for more from early edition with
