- 0:24Jim and I use gene therapies to increase their brain mass. A larger brain means more protein.
- 0:30As a side effect, the sharks got smarter. You stupid bitch.
- 0:37I didn't want this to happen, but with this research, we could practically wipe
- 0:41out degenerative brain disease.
- 0:44Think of the generations that will be saved. Exactly how many sticks of dynamite
- 0:49would you have to set off in your ears for your head clearly?
- 0:54You wouldn't understand. I wouldn't, huh? Dumb old Carter.
- 1:00You wouldn't understand that you used us.
- 1:04That you used me. Someone on the water who wouldn't make waves.
- 1:09Someone who wouldn't ask too many questions. Because he had something to lose.
- 1:13You don't see what we've done here. And what you've done is taken God's oldest
- 1:17killing machine and given it will and desire.
- 1:19What you've done is knock us all the way to the bottom of the goddamn food chain.
- 1:24It's not a great leap forward in my book. All right, people.
- 1:26Welcome back to another sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet episode of Citizen Frame
- 1:32as we continue Shark Month with an actual shark film. For a change.
- 1:39We talked about Rene Harlan quite a bit on this podcast a couple times with
- 1:43his Nightmare on Elm Street outing and, of course, the long kiss goodnight.
- 1:47I backed him up. I'm a big fan of his. I like his resurgence with the Strangers
- 1:52franchise that's currently out.
- 1:54He kind of hit a home run with this next one, which is Deep Blue Sea.
- 1:59So he had a nice resurgence with Deep Blue Sea after Cuthbert Island, sadly.
- 2:03And Long Kiss Goodnight weren't big hits for him. I still back those up.
- 2:06I think they're wonderful films. But Deep Blue Sea, yeah, gave him a little bit of resurgence.
- 2:10Sadly, he revisited. Then he kind of did The Covenant or something,
- 2:13which was a piece of shit.
- 2:14He did that extra shit film. Terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible driven with
- 2:20Stallone, which was terrible.
- 2:22So he kind of went back in the sewers with those two.
- 2:27But Deep Blue Sea, $60 million budget, under $65 million worldwide.
- 2:31It's an introduction to a couple of new actors out there that were trying to
- 2:36find their niche, and a couple of Pepperdine with a couple of vets.
- 2:40But it is a film I remember seeing. I remember seeing this and The Blair Witch at the same time.
- 2:46And it's a nice little pleasant surprise. It's got a little nods to our boy,
- 2:50Bruce the Shark, and Jaws, as well as Jaws 2 and 3.
- 2:54Yes. With the similarities of the deaths of the sharks. We'll dive into that in a moment.
- 3:00And so I think of all, you know, you always have all these comparisons.
- 3:05We talk piranha and alligator, you know, Jaws in the sewers or little fish version of Jaws for piranha.
- 3:13But I actually, I'll joke, I think Deep Blue Sea is the closest we got to an honorable team.
- 3:22Nod to the hat to jaws well he's
- 3:25one of my favorites yeah in this kind
- 3:28of category yeah for me it's certainly
- 3:31jaws for the 1990s this was
- 3:34my first time watching this by the way i didn't catch it at the time so
- 3:38this was my first time watching it for the podcast um yeah for me it obviously
- 3:42it was released in 1999 so it's obviously gonna have a 1990s feel to it but
- 3:47this is for me very yeah jaws for the 1990s with rennie hardin directing so
- 3:55and of course samuel l jackson,
- 3:58yeah samuel jackson's always me to get because he was still hot
- 4:01and now he's kind of a one-trick pony it's kind of war i was welcome in my eyes
- 4:05kind of kind of with christopher walken they kind of you know they became farces
- 4:10of themselves yeah and well i mean so no yeah they could even tell you that. I mean, Jesus.
- 4:19I think with Samuel L. Jackson, it started to happen when he was,
- 4:22he started to parody himself was what started really with snakes on a plane.
- 4:28Yeah. It's just too much of a good thing. Yeah.
- 4:31So we got Thomas Jane. He was hot from Boogie Nights.
- 4:36This is his first big starring role. I'm a big Thomas Jane fan.
- 4:39I like him too. He works really, he works closely with Stephen King.
- 4:42He does a couple of Stephen King adaptations, but God, we will probably get
- 4:45to it. The most depressing film ever shot.
- 4:48The Mist, an underrated film, but I think it's definitely found its cult following. But he plays Carter.
- 4:55You got Samuel Jackson, who plays Russell.
- 4:57LL Cool J, who plays Preacher. You got Stellan Skarsgård, who's actually a rookie.
- 5:03He just did Good Will Hunting, I believe. So he was trying to find his niche in the U.S. market.
- 5:07He plays Jim, Safon Burroughs, younger self, plays Dr. McAllister.
- 5:13The veteran, who I always like to see, Michael Rappaport. He plays Tom.
- 5:17And then we got Janice played by Jacqueline McKenzie. All the actors have successful careers.
- 5:22They've all done it. They went on to do, you know, cool things.
- 5:26Thomas Jane did an absolutely wonderful version of The Punisher.
- 5:30I was just about to say that.
- 5:32Yeah. And you have to see the underrated version. If you're going to watch it, watch.
- 5:37It's like 35 minutes of extra footage and stuff.
- 5:42So you need to watch it. But the Punisher is underrated, underrated gold.
- 5:48I would say as well that Stellan Skarsgård, he later teamed up again with Rennie
- 5:53Harlan for Exorcist The Beginning.
- 5:56Stellan Skarsgård playing a younger version of Father Merlin in the 1940s.
- 6:01It's not very good, but Skarsgård holds his own because he's Skarsgård.
- 6:07I don't think it's not that bad of a film. I've seen worse. He had a work.
- 6:12Rene Harlan came in to fix it up. He had a work with the original footage,
- 6:16which was called Dominion. The Paul Strater version that was later released.
- 6:20Paul Strater, and I heard it was absolutely boring. So he kind of Hollywooded
- 6:23up a bit. And I don't think it's that bad.
- 6:26It's not as bad as other Exorcist sequels, let's just say.
- 6:30It's definitely better than Exorcist 2. That piece is dog shit.
- 6:33Or the recent one, which was absolutely terrible. We discussed that one.
- 6:37I still hold my mind on that one.
- 6:39So go fuck yourself. That was absolute horse shit. I don't give a fuck.
- 6:42It was arguably the worst film I ever made.
- 6:44Now you're stupid. You didn't like it. Now you're gay. You didn't like it.
- 6:48I liked it. What are you talking about?
- 6:51Well, you gave it a mixture. No, I liked it. I did not.
- 6:55You need to listen to our podcast from now on. I don't think you do.
- 6:58I think you just fucking record them and just go.
- 7:01And then you just walk away. No, no, no, no. I think you should listen back to that one.
- 7:07But, uh. Oh, dude, you're calling yourself out. You're looking really bad right
- 7:11now. You're looking like a piece of shit. Whoa.
- 7:15Piece of dog shit. We're trying to get these viewers. We're trying to get these listeners.
- 7:19And they're like, fuck, if he's not going to listen to the podcast,
- 7:22why should we? Way to go, Trevor.
- 7:24Way to go. To damage the good name of Citizen Frame.
- 7:28The good name? Wow. Yeah. That's a stretch. Fucking right.
- 7:33But, no, no. So back to Stellan Skarsgård and our Myanmar.
- 7:40I look at some fun facts. This is the funnest one. So there's actually a shot
- 7:44where Thomas Jane actually is swimming with the shark.
- 7:47I know there's sharks in here. They had to put it in writing that,
- 7:52yes, we can do that scene with him.
- 7:54He's actually swimming next to a shark. but in order for the scene to work he
- 8:00has to make sure he's filmed all of his other scenes just in case he got eaten so yeah,
- 8:07there's absolutely no way I mean again as
- 8:10I've said throughout shark month man does not belong in the ocean and do not
- 8:15fuck with nature no way in a million years say about 20 odd years ago I went
- 8:21on holiday with my mates to Cyprus and they all went deep sea diving like a
- 8:25complete I looked like a complete moron, but at least it was safe.
- 8:28I sat in the very shallow part and didn't go anywhere near underwater.
- 8:32You know? No chance.
- 8:34Because you're a fucking pussy.
- 8:36No, it's because I'm not stupid. I mean, I can swim and stuff.
- 8:40But there's absolutely no chance I ain't going to jump into this.
- 8:42I'm not swimming with a shark. The Mediterranean.
- 8:45I bullshit. I see them.
- 8:47Right, okay. Jason Statham, right? I even cut my own hand.
- 8:52I know you did. I did on, Jason. But no, no, I'm just, I mean, I can swim and stuff.
- 8:57I'm just not a complete idiot where I'm going to, like, put myself anywhere
- 9:01close to a shark or something like an octopus or even a jellyfish.
- 9:07Those bastards thing, yeah, it's going to hurt. Just pee on yourself.
- 9:13I'd rather not. Thanks very much. That'd be awesome. I did enough of that when
- 9:16I was drunk. Oh, that's Trevor peeing on himself again.
- 9:19Oh, that's Trevor. Oh, he's back on the drink, is he?
- 9:25Wow. You just opened up to all of our listeners that used to pee yourself a lot.
- 9:30I can never resist a good joke, sorry. Even if it's at my own expense.
- 9:37All right, back to Deep Blue City. Yeah.
- 9:41I do like the fact, there's one little fun fact, that all three sharks are killed
- 9:45in order the same way they died in Jaws 1, 2, and 3.
- 9:49And also the car number plate
- 9:52yeah the license plate makes an appearance so the
- 9:55first shark is blown up a second shark's electrocuted and third
- 9:58shark's incinerated yeah yeah i mean there's obviously sort of yeah it's a big
- 10:04homage you know one of many homages to jaws but certainly most definitely one
- 10:09of the better ones so the opening scene you're introduced right away to kind
- 10:14of how big these fuckers are and how aggressive they are when you got these dipshits.
- 10:19It's a double edged sword for me here because I want to see these fucking idiots
- 10:22get eaten so bad, I never in my life wanted fucking four assholes to get it
- 10:27and just be fucking eaten.
- 10:29The only one I didn't want to get eaten was probably Thomas Jane.
- 10:33No, I'm talking about the beginning.
- 10:36Oh sorry yes, well here, that's a good rug pool actually, the sort of poser
- 10:40types who are out sort of on the yacht and yeah, and you think that they're
- 10:45going to get killed but it's a rug pull.
- 10:48It's actually a clever twist at the beginning.
- 10:51I kind of want to see him get eaten, but that would defeat the purpose of the film.
- 10:54Because you're introducing Carter as this badass, so if he doesn't get there
- 10:58in time, it kind of defeats what you're trying to build this character around.
- 11:04You had to save him, in other words. But it's also.
- 11:09Subverting the audience's expectations, because everybody thinks that obviously,
- 11:13like Jaws and piranha there's going to be a death at the beginning of dipshits
- 11:19so it's good it was a good way to twist that I mean as I said this is my first
- 11:23time watching it and I was expecting them to die and actually wanting them to die to be honest,
- 11:27yeah I mean I wanted them to die but,
- 11:30Yeah, they didn't. Fuckers. It would be a good, better ending.
- 11:35One of them got out and went after them. Yeah, well.
- 11:40So. Is that being the sequel? I like the score.
- 11:43Trevor Rabin does the score here, and he obviously takes the Jaws thing and makes it his own.
- 11:48Yes. This is just keyboard and stuff, but it's simple, three notes,
- 11:53I think, or something like that. There's no odds.
- 11:55Yeah. Yeah, it kind of spirals and it gets louder and louder as it gets, the charts get close.
- 12:00Closer definitely a take from from william's wonderful
- 12:03score but he makes it his own i think you know he tried
- 12:06something different and it works for me and i think that's what makes deep
- 12:09lucy a decent film they know they're self-aware there's there's a better movie
- 12:13out there called jaws and they're not on the hat to it plenty of times but they
- 12:17do something different and they're successful at it quite frankly they do they're
- 12:22yeah they're taking the jaws trope and they're Sort of tweaking it a bit.
- 12:27I mean this isn't too heavy on story to be fair.
- 12:30This is a base under siege. And a big shark monster movie.
- 12:34But they do make it their own. You know again in that very 90s way.
- 12:40Did you see that? There must have been an edited version somewhere out there,
- 12:44where our boy Ronnie Cox must have a bigger part, right?
- 12:48I think that's just a cameo. I mean, maybe there are deleted scenes out there
- 12:53where he speaks, but it's a completely silent cameo.
- 12:57I'm kind of disappointed because I like him. I was like, Dick, say something.
- 13:00I don't know. Yeah. I always liked him being nasty and, you know,
- 13:05and shit like in Total Recall and Robocop and stuff, you know. Dick, you're fired.
- 13:11Yeah. Yeah. So it is quite random. It's actually a bit distracting.
- 13:17Not too much, obviously. But it's just like, come on, Ronnie, speak.
- 13:22Now, I do like the story here. The idea that they're funding Russell's,
- 13:29Ronnie Cox and Samuel Jackson, we'll call it Russell Samuel Jackson.
- 13:34That's the character. he is funding 200 million
- 13:37dollars for these trials to cure alzheimer's and what
- 13:40they're what and the whole thing is kind of interesting stats
- 13:44they do that are true sharks never get
- 13:47cancer they don't get blind as they as as they as they age they're the oldest
- 13:52creatures on the planet and so what they're what they do is that they're injecting
- 13:56hormonal enhancers and to get their brain five at times, its normal size or something like that.
- 14:05Yeah. And to be able to take some of that and to test it, obviously,
- 14:12on the human side to hopefully end Alzheimer's. I kind of like this story.
- 14:17Obviously, we know that there's a quick one-night fix about,
- 14:21oh, but we never do genetic testing. That's not what we're about.
- 14:25Well, we find out that the doctor, who is the most.
- 14:30Quite frankly, unlikable character the entire film oh yeah
- 14:33she she's been playing uh dr frankenstein
- 14:37yes i mean i'm not a marine biologist myself
- 14:40but from what i've read up on there is quite a bit of playing loose and fast
- 14:45with actual science and you know the sharks what sharks can and cannot do but
- 14:50i'm not going to put myself out there because i'm not a marine biologist so
- 14:54i wouldn't take too serious you know the science of this film.
- 14:59I do like this type of story. Yeah. Well, I must say the science is always,
- 15:04yeah, this could really work.
- 15:06I'm talking about the facts about sharks.
- 15:08I don't think they'd say that if it wasn't real.
- 15:11I think, yes, but I think since this film was released, it has been proven.
- 15:16I mean, again, I could be wrong here.
- 15:18The sharks can get cancer and there's all, I think there's all, Oh, okay.
- 15:21So you've been to the shark treatment ward and you're seeing fucking sharks
- 15:26swimming around with canes. No, but I'm just saying. Because they've gone blind. No, no, no.
- 15:29What I'm saying is that sharks can't go backwards either. As far as I'm aware,
- 15:34they can't swim because it would kill them. They can't go backwards. I know.
- 15:37Yes. Yeah. But I think they can here.
- 15:40You know, so there is. But you know what? It's a fictional film.
- 15:43It's an entertaining. I think you're just trying to prove to our listeners.
- 15:46Well, not it was you brought it up.
- 15:47I was just brought it up. I think you're just trying to prove to our listeners.
- 15:50Honestly, oh, look at me. I'm Trevor.
- 15:52I know everything about fucking sharks.
- 15:54No, no. I stated it before. I'm not a marine biologist.
- 15:57So, you know. Okay, I got a trivia question for you. Go ahead.
- 16:01How many bones are in a shark?
- 16:03I don't know. None. Because I'm not a marine biologist. None.
- 16:06That's right. They're cartilage. They're all made of cartilage.
- 16:09Cartilage is a muscle. And the teeth are cartilage. Right. Yes.
- 16:13I remember reading that somewhere or hearing that somewhere before.
- 16:16But thank you for reminding me, Dr. Woods.
- 16:20Marine biologist right here. Yeah.
- 16:23So fuck off. So thank you for that. Right. Not a very pleasant marine biologist,
- 16:27I have to say. Quite a rude one.
- 16:29People are now like, this guy's amazing.
- 16:32He knows everything about sharks. He knows you've got to pee on yourself if
- 16:36you get stung by jellyfish.
- 16:39Oh, piss off.
- 16:43That's terrible. It's nothing compared to Christopher Walken.
- 16:49What? You still get on about that? You say he's still, it's two weeks.
- 16:54Yeah, exactly. You should've gone to work in two seconds! Fuck that.
- 16:57My goodness. Fucking classic.
- 16:59Great. Anyway. Now, you got Preacher here, who I thought would be annoying.
- 17:04LL Cool J, I'm not a diehard fan, but he seems like a good guy.
- 17:07And he's actually one of the funner characters in this. I really do.
- 17:10And the great thing about Deep Blue Sea is that the characters are actually all decent.
- 17:14I kind of like all of them, besides the Doctor.
- 17:19And Preacher, played by LL Cool J, even the banter with his bird,
- 17:23I thought would be campy and stupid. But it actually plays off well,
- 17:26and I'd rather enjoy it. and I love his escape scene.
- 17:30LL Cool J is actually pretty good and likable here.
- 17:35To be honest with you, I don't know his music that well, but I just know that there's a fact for you.
- 17:41Do you know what LL Cool J actually stands for? I don't care.
- 17:47Ladies love Cool James. So there you go.
- 17:50There's a wee bit of trivia for you. I give you fucking incredible knowledge of sharks.
- 17:58And jellyfish, and you give me that shit,
- 18:01Well, that's a bit of pop culture trivia. At least I'm not pretending to be a scientist.
- 18:06So ladies love cool James. I like the tiger shark scene.
- 18:10I like when they feed the fucker. And it's a crazy little shame because when
- 18:15they feed the tiger shark to the three bastards, they tear it to shreds.
- 18:20Yes. And our boy Carter notices this. And he says something to the doc.
- 18:27And he says, something's going on here. They attack. They're hunting in packs. Yeah.
- 18:35What is going on? He's starting to question what exactly is going on in those
- 18:40needles that she's putting into their brains.
- 18:43I would also say that this is when the audience, I would say,
- 18:49starts to question the ethics of the doctor and what they're actually doing
- 18:52at that space. That's what I said.
- 18:55Yeah. Carter was. No, no. And when Carter brought it up, she threatens him because
- 19:00he's got that shady background from smuggling. And she's very condescending towards him. Yeah.
- 19:06The doctor here, she's a sociopath, essentially.
- 19:10I mean, she's, everything that happens in this film, all the bad shit is all
- 19:15because of her. The character's emotional.
- 19:17She never smiles. Yeah. She's a sociopath. Yeah.
- 19:20But she does have a pretty good redemption arc.
- 19:25Do you know where the shark's brain is located?
- 19:28Please enlighten me, Mr. marine biologist very top of the head obviously.
- 19:34So they say or is it the nose is it the nose it might be the nose because they
- 19:38say if you're getting attacked by a shark and you're welcome if I save lives
- 19:41here you punch it there because it gives it a headache Dr.
- 19:46Woods here was obviously sitting on Wikipedia looking up as much shit as he could on sharks,
- 19:52no I'm not I actually knew that hold on sharks brain I actually know this from other movies and shit,
- 20:02Okay, well, sharks' brains, while smaller than some mammals,
- 20:05are surprisingly complex and well-developed. Okay.
- 20:09Blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah. Hold on,
- 20:14hold on. Yeah, well, happily.
- 20:16Hold on. Can you punch me in the face? Hold on.
- 20:21Okay. Ours of the nose. Where to punch a shark when being attacked?
- 20:28I don't plan to ever meet once. So you're welcome. Here we go.
- 20:32Hit the shark in the eyes or the gills. Sense of errors that can hurt regardless of personal strength.
- 20:38Hit the shark in the snout and push it away. I have a trap in the back. I was right.
- 20:44Hit the shark in the nose.
- 20:47I hear I'm a brilliant swimmer. I'm a really strong swimmer,
- 20:50so yeah, that'd be no problem. I can see you fucking doing that.
- 20:54So the shark's brain is in his head, which is common sense. I don't know why
- 20:58that's any good fact. There you go, fucking idiot.
- 21:02But I was right, you punch it in the nose. You punch it in the nose. So you're welcome.
- 21:07I saved lots of lives today. Little Billy is probably going swimming today.
- 21:11He's like, I'm going to listen to Citizen Frame before I go swimming.
- 21:14And then, because he just got done eating, so he didn't want to swim right away.
- 21:17So he decides, I'm going to let this slowly digest so I don't get cramps.
- 21:21And I'm going to listen to Citizen Frame. He'll happen to listen to this episode.
- 21:24Boom. He'll be out. Little Billy will be swimming. Boom. He starts getting pulled under.
- 21:27And pow, kicks it right in the fucking nose. That's such a good service.
- 21:31You're doing to humanity in general.
- 21:33Not sharks, but there you go. So, back to the Blue Sea.
- 21:38Right, yeah. Yeah, I'm sorry, I forgot we were doing a film there.
- 21:42I thought this was like a science lesson, but...
- 21:45It's in his head. I was like, what the fuck? Of course it's in his head. What the fuck?
- 21:51Well, at least the shark's got brains in its head, unlike some people.
- 21:53We have them in their arse. Yeah. Talking about yourself again,
- 21:56Trevor, that's horrible.
- 21:59Go ahead. And you like to see where Carter's going in. The whole intro to Carter
- 22:04is really cool, especially when he's got to go and get the shark.
- 22:08Yeah. And to bring the shark into the lab. I like that whole sequence.
- 22:12And the shark effects are very good here.
- 22:14They're very, very good. Well, there's, yeah, they are.
- 22:18And including the animatronic sharks, I have to say, They look fantastic and very real.
- 22:22Even when she punctures the skin with the needle, you can hear it pop like a balloon almost.
- 22:29Yeah. It's almost like a really thick rubber.
- 22:35For a minute or so, I was trying to work out.
- 22:41I know they have used real sharks in this for some of the underwater scenes,
- 22:47but I was trying to work out how much of a real shark was being used or not
- 22:51so that's how good the animatronic shark is,
- 22:54especially at these early scenes you know sometimes you do cutaways on the sharks,
- 23:00it looks like stock footage they call it,
- 23:02I didn't see that at all no no, the one thing I would say does let it down is the 1990s CGI at times.
- 23:12It does it's all the time yeah of
- 23:16course you know what i mean i'm not judging too harsh like but the
- 23:19animatronic stuff does look fantastic so i do like when russell's watching they're
- 23:23all watching him wrangle the shark they noticed yes like when he points the
- 23:29gun the shark backs away the shark knows and they and all of a sudden they see
- 23:35the sharks taking up the cameras.
- 23:38That's right yeah so it's it
- 23:41does stretch the sort
- 23:44of belief a bit where it's sort of it's almost
- 23:47like sharks can switch off machines off and on
- 23:50so that sort of suggests they can read now as well so we are stretching the
- 23:54belief here but you know in the context of this film we're running with it no
- 24:00because she's injecting them with this what i don't know what it is with this
- 24:05toxin it's it's a smart enough animal as it is,
- 24:08it is enhancing its, it's, so it,
- 24:12yeah, it's learning to adapt. I think that's cool. I think that's clever.
- 24:16Yeah, but there are times where it's almost suggested they can read what sort
- 24:21of, they're not reading. Okay. I said they're reading a fucking book.
- 24:25I'm not saying that, but what, well, they can sort of, they can switch off,
- 24:30off and on machines. So, but anyway, I'm running with us.
- 24:33They're just breaking things down. They're not turning machines off.
- 24:37Well they're going to the off button instead of the on button later on whenever
- 24:43it's and also getting into this underwater base they're just crashing into it.
- 24:50No, no, don't go well. You're making shit up. Maybe it was the way I was looking at it.
- 24:56You can see them with the mouth golfing the camera and ripping it off.
- 25:00That's what they're doing.
- 25:02They're not going, they're not going. Defender of sharks. Let me just remove this HDMI cable here.
- 25:08That one's got his glasses on. That's a good one.
- 25:13Okay, defender of sharks. But that's whatever.
- 25:18I'm running with it anyway, as I said. Being all over it like you would your,
- 25:22jellyfish fucking foot. That's really jellyfish. So anyways,
- 25:29you just waste good jokes. That was a good joke. That was a good one wasted.
- 25:35I think people have turned ourselves up. I think people have turned ourselves up.
- 25:41Yeah, yeah. We're sort of all over the place here, but anyway,
- 25:44let's get back to the plot.
- 25:45So, Jim gets his arm eaten. Oh, I like this.
- 25:48I like good gore, I like my practical and yeah, this poor bastard gets the worst
- 25:54death of all of them and the one thing.
- 25:58The film does right, no deaths are a cheat, everyone gets it and you see it.
- 26:03And I would say as well, what this scene with Stellan getting his arm ripped
- 26:09off and eventual death is, it sort of backs up that a lot of this reminded me
- 26:13of Alien the original Alien, you know the base under siege by a monster essentially,
- 26:19and with the John Hurt chestburster scene, this is like it's out of the blue,
- 26:25it's not expected certainly first time watching it anyway,
- 26:28what I like about it it's a good blend of the horror element obviously,
- 26:33but also action, because they have to get his body to a helicopter and the helicopter
- 26:39is trying to bring him up,
- 26:41sharks grab him and pull him down with the cabling, and they drag they drag
- 26:47the wire connected to the helicopter to obviously to collide with the tower.
- 26:53And that causes the big explosion.
- 26:55But the great sod is where Samuel Jackson always gets the best lines. You know, he is.
- 27:00I know, but Samuel L. Jackson. They're down in the laboratory. They think he's gone.
- 27:07Explosion just hit. They know something's not right.
- 27:10And he goes, what the hell is that? And he sees one of the sharks with a fur
- 27:15fucking gym in his mouth with an oxygen mask with the fucker still alive.
- 27:19He's still alive, yeah. He's still in the gurney and they chuck him to break
- 27:24the glass to get in. So fucking fun.
- 27:27So batshit crazy. They ram the glass with him basically on the gurney and then
- 27:33you see the glass, you know, just cracking slightly and it's coming.
- 27:36It's like Jenga. You know, it's going to fall apart here in a moment.
- 27:40Yeah, but it's such a brutal death for him, you know. Poor bastard.
- 27:45Yeah. So they find out and they,
- 27:50that what the sharks are trying to do, they're going to try to flood each floor.
- 27:57And as they flood each compartment, the underwater station can only take so
- 28:02many gallons and then it's going to eventually sink itself.
- 28:06Yep. And that way they can escape from the netting, which is titanium,
- 28:12and because the netting above the titanium is basic wire and they can get over
- 28:17that or eat through it, whatever.
- 28:19So there you go. So it's the great escape for sharks.
- 28:25Well, from sharks anyway. But no, no, I mean, the sharks are obviously looking
- 28:29to escape as well, which we'll find out later on.
- 28:32So that's what it's all about. Essentially, them getting their freedom from Dr.
- 28:37Frankenstein, Lady Frankenstein. Yeah, when Carter figures out what's happening,
- 28:41he goes off on her and she tries to defend what she's saying.
- 28:48And she goes you have no idea what we've done here and then he comes back with
- 28:51a great line he says what you've done here is given God's oldest killing machine a given
- 28:58all you've done is giving it will and desire what you've done is knocked us
- 29:02down the bottom of the food chain,
- 29:04it's a good line pretty much sums up what she's done yeah oh no no like I say
- 29:10she is cold and sort of she's Dr.
- 29:13Frankenstein yeah I like the preacher stuff I like the whole sequence when he's by himself.
- 29:21He starts, he's going around the corners. He hears popping up the little,
- 29:24you know, the bolts coming out from the water pressure.
- 29:27And I just love this whole sequence between himself and the shark.
- 29:30It's so fun. And I'm not really claustrophobic, but I was in this scene.
- 29:35You know what freaked me out in this scene where he's in the oven? Yeah, exactly.
- 29:41And that's just, oh, that's so claustrophobic. And then the shark's hitting
- 29:45everything, and as the shark's hitting everything, it actually hits the on button, not on purpose.
- 29:53He's not going- That's because it ran the sign. He's like, wait a minute,
- 29:56I'm going to put this up to 350-
- 30:00No, it read the on sign because it's the smart I can read.
- 30:04No, no. And it kills the parrot. I don't care about the fucking bird. Well, I did.
- 30:10But that whole thing, he's got that little hatchet and he's got to pound his
- 30:13way up from the second part of the oven and then obviously he blows up the shark.
- 30:20It's a really nice scene and it is intense and it's fun as fuck.
- 30:25Yeah, it is good. Yeah, It's a very good death for this first death of this shark.
- 30:33So let's talk. The best jump scare in the entire film, Russell's speech.
- 30:40Now, Russell's the survivor from the Alps. They're kind of like talking like
- 30:44the story from the Andes that happened years ago.
- 30:47Yeah, alive. Yeah, kind of playing on that. He goes, let me tell you a story.
- 30:52When I was in the Alps, when the avalanche came, when the avalanche came,
- 30:58It took us a week to climb out.
- 31:00We turned on each other. There were seven of us.
- 31:03Two of us didn't make it. You know who killed, do you think the snow killed those two?
- 31:08And then I just give him this big, we're going to sit here and we're going to
- 31:11fight and we're going to take this.
- 31:13And then the shark comes up and fucking just engulfs him. And just eats him.
- 31:17Yeah. Fucking awesome. It's a great speech. It's a great speech by Jackson actually
- 31:20about, you know, obviously great at delivering these types of speeches.
- 31:24And you know he's talking about horror essentially suggesting that you think
- 31:29sharks are bad humans are the worst monsters of them all but before he gets
- 31:33a chance to finish it he just gets hit and ripped in half by the shark,
- 31:39it's almost playing on his famous speech in Pulp Fiction yeah well it's yeah.
- 31:45It's a bit sort of hammy and stuff but then but you're not expecting I mean
- 31:50I certainly wasn't expecting that to happen,
- 31:52you know the elevator sequence is
- 31:56again each scene when someone gets
- 31:59it is very intense and it's yeah
- 32:02it doesn't drop from that from the preacher sequence to the russell sequence
- 32:09to jim sequence now we get a per girl janice but it seems they always play up
- 32:16on the other and they always try to one-up the other scene. And they do that quite well.
- 32:20Per Janice, who's the nice character, this whole sequence where Carter's got
- 32:25to try to, the shark's now in this elevator shaft with them,
- 32:29and he's going to try to open the doors below so the water will filter into
- 32:34the one level, giving them some time to get out of the shaft. It's very well done.
- 32:38And then when Janice falls in, she disappears in the water, and that fucker
- 32:42grabs her right between the legs, ugh, and then pulls her down.
- 32:46It's a tough little watch because she is a likable character and she was one
- 32:49of the nicer ones. Well, they're all pretty nice.
- 32:52I find her quite wany. Oh, is that before her husband, her boyfriend just got eaten?
- 32:59Both and the character was pregnant, but they never say that.
- 33:04They cut it out. Yes, I read right about that. Because he said that would be too icky.
- 33:11Yeah, Rennie Harlan apparently said that it didn't feel right for him.
- 33:14So I get that because, you know, the tone of this is a fun monster based on
- 33:21their seeds type film, action film, horror. Yeah.
- 33:24So it would have sort of damaged the tone, I think. So I agree with Rennie Harlan
- 33:28actually in that one. And that's a lot of things. There is some humor here and there.
- 33:31Mainly just come, you know, smart-ass quips from Tom, the preacher, and so forth.
- 33:36Just people being paranoid and, you know, going a little mad because they're scared fuck.
- 33:41But the film kind of does play even. It doesn't, it doesn't,
- 33:46it's fair on the action. It's fair on the jokes. It's fair on the camp.
- 33:51It's fair on the gore. It's fair on the action.
- 33:53It's well leveled. So, yeah. In terms of the script, it's balanced well. Yeah, exactly.
- 34:01And that's rare for creature features. Most creature features don't give a fuck.
- 34:05And so it's nice to see that. There's a movie that came out a couple years back
- 34:09that's really good called Crawl.
- 34:11I haven't seen it. That's a good one. They're making a sequel.
- 34:14Might have to get to that one someday.
- 34:16Right? Yeah, so Preacher saves the day.
- 34:21And this one sucks when Tom gets it. Again, going back to what I said,
- 34:25it's a really solid scene.
- 34:27The character is very scared, wants to get out of there. He ends up pretty much
- 34:30self-sacrifice to turn on the power to get them, to get them out of there.
- 34:35And yeah, to drain the thing. Yeah. The drain the, what is it?
- 34:39The oxygen shaft, whatever it is. I don't know the book.
- 34:41It's, it's something to do with the three in one of the levels so that they
- 34:45can get to another level.
- 34:47You know, all, all like yourself, I'm not a scientist, you know, these types of things.
- 34:52He basically self-sacrifices more or less to sort of hit the button for them
- 34:58to get to the next level, to get closer to safety.
- 35:01So when this poor bastard gets it, not only does he get it, it grabs him from
- 35:06the waist and pressures him against the electronical unit that he was trying to start the power on.
- 35:12He gets electrocuted, and then you see his legs, just his legs,
- 35:17and they're still twitching. Fucking awesome.
- 35:20It's a cool death I have to say and you know the sharks here are badass you
- 35:26know I don't care what anyone says you know you know they're clever bastards but they're also,
- 35:31pretty badass too the death with the the next shark with the doc,
- 35:36yeah it was okay I just had the best of them but it's pretty good I do like
- 35:40how she gets naked it's a very good scene.
- 35:44She and she she stands on a rubber suit so she won't get electrocuted But before
- 35:50all this happens, there's a nice little jump scare where a model of a shark
- 35:54is right behind her. We think it's a shark.
- 35:57Oh, yes. We'll see at the start. We'll see that at the start.
- 36:00It's like where she works from. It's like a quirky shark table or something.
- 36:03Yeah, it's kind of like a – It pops up.
- 36:05Yeah, it's a dummy shark that she can pretend to work on.
- 36:09Yes, exactly. But it's a nice jump scare. And they do introduce you,
- 36:12but you don't remember it.
- 36:13And then it does come back into play, which does work. so when they get to the surface,
- 36:20I do like the fact that Preacher gets bitten, and it's well done.
- 36:26It actually looks like a guy who's trapped in a shark's mouth.
- 36:29I thought Preacher was done for. Yeah, I thought that too. Now, he's wounded.
- 36:33He gets away because this kind of grabs him real quick.
- 36:40And this is where our girl self-sacrifices herself.
- 36:45Yeah. And she cuts her hand and jumps into the water. it's because they're looking
- 36:49to harpoon this last shark that's remaining but the harpoon won't reach so she's
- 36:54basically using herself as bait to get it closer so that Thomas Jain and LL
- 36:59Cool J can then get it I do like the fact that she wasn't necessarily self-sacrificing.
- 37:07Self-sacrificing herself she was just yeah like you said bait then she started
- 37:12swimming right behind her is the ladder but the ladder breaks underneath the
- 37:16water so she falls back in and that ends up being her demise and again,
- 37:22a brutal full on, she gets devoured and they show it.
- 37:26But her character does have that redemption arc because she is not a nice character
- 37:32as I said, she was a sociopath and apparently she in the original cut of this film she survived,
- 37:38but test audiences didn't like that so
- 37:41they basically quickly reshot her basically
- 37:45getting bumped off and having the redemption arc which i think is
- 37:47a wise choice and then of course we got preacher and
- 37:51carter who survived and then you get that really cool deepest
- 37:54bluest my heart is my hat is like a shark's fin
- 37:57yeah what the fuck does that mean deepest bluest my hat is like a shark's fin
- 38:03don't know don't know what was the 90s mom it's not bad i mean it's very 90s
- 38:11well back in the 90s there was well yeah keep in mind And this is pretty much 2000.
- 38:15I know. But in the 90s, there was this weird sort of thing with Hollywood movies.
- 38:21Some of them were historically set where they would have had a rap song for the end credits.
- 38:28Vanilla Ice. Go Ninja, Go Ninja, Go. Yeah, yes, that's the stuff.
- 38:34Yes, that's the stuff. That's what I'm talking about.
- 38:37Or else they would have had, like, I don't know, like in Robin Hood,
- 38:40Princess Dave's, in medieval England, they would have had Brad Adams in his
- 38:43band playing electric guitars in Sherwood Forest. Oh, that never happened. Fuck off.
- 38:47Now you're making stuff up. What, do you do the video for everything?
- 38:49Oh, it's a video. That's different. That's in the movie.
- 38:52Oh, you got MC Hammer. Didn't he do The Addams Family?
- 38:56Yes. The Addams Family. It's terrible. They do what they want to do.
- 39:00Yeah, they do what they want to do.
- 39:01Say what they want to say. Be what they want to be. The Addams Family.
- 39:05Yes. It was an 80s thing. That's how people know it in the 90s.
- 39:09They like that sort of horse shit. Deepest, bluest, my hat is like a shark fin.
- 39:14It's complete nonsense in terms of lyrics. I can't get it out of my head. I enjoy it.
- 39:20Classic, man. But it wraps it up well. I mean, it is what it is.
- 39:23I mean, this is basically a Randy Harlan monster movie, a shark movie.
- 39:28And for what it is, I enjoyed it and found it entertaining. I own it.
- 39:32I have the deluxe 4K edition, which comes with all the cool fixings.
- 39:38And so I watch this one regularly, actually. It's a very easy podcast for me
- 39:42to do. Check it out, guys.
- 39:45No it's not Jaws but you know what they know that too and that's why it makes
- 39:50a good film it's Jaws for the 1990s rap song at all so there you go boom boom boom,
- 39:59go nip go shark go shark go that's terrible no no no no I was bad I was trying
- 40:04to do vanilla ice star but change it to shark deep as blue my head is like a shark's fin,
- 40:09oh that's much better oh that's quality I'm so jiggy with it Yeah.
- 40:15Word. Not only is Kieran a top scientist, he's also a hip-hop maverick. That's right. Yo-yo.
- 40:26Later, Kieran's crib. Yeah, right.
- 40:30All right, so Shark Month's coming to an end, even though we talked on most shark films.
- 40:36But hear me out. We want to do Dangerous Animals, and we will do it.
- 40:40It's supposed to be on demand here soon. And once it's on demand and we have
- 40:43access to it, we will do it. But in the meantime, we got to pepper something else in.
- 40:48So we're thinking here. We don't know yet, but we'll get something out.
- 40:54God, we're disorganized. God, we're fucking terrible at this.
- 40:57We're terrible at this. So if you guys have any ideas, we're going to do something
- 41:01months, you know, in less than a week here. So give us a shout.
- 41:05It's citizenframe underscore podcast on Instagram and, of course, Facebook.
- 41:09Thanks for putting up with us in this one. but I'm glad I was able to save Billy's life.
- 41:16And give us a better rap music. Yeah. You know, I'm a renaissance man.
- 41:22Multi-talented. Yeah. Pretty much how it works. That's how I roll, yo.
- 41:27See, I'm one of your talents aren't film critiquing, but anyway, we'll not do that.
- 41:30I'm a fucking real, I'm honest and open. I guarantee you Renee Harland,
- 41:34Scorsese, Spielberg going, wow, that Kieran's right. I should have done this differently.
- 41:40I'm going to go ahead I'm going to reshoot Sinner's list I'm going to reshoot
- 41:44Sinner's list because of what Kieran says on the advice of Kieran oh fuck,
- 41:51okay well end on that no it's been a long fucking day take care of yourself say.
- 41:57Music.
