- 1:11into today's episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow Heart of Gold. When I
- 1:18got the Chris fifty dollar bill in advance, I figured my client had a
- 1:21heart of gold. But after I was beat up, double crossed, and
- 1:25shut up, I realized just how a heart of gold can be. On
- 1:30the pen of Raymond Sandler, outstanding author of crime fiction, comes his most
- 1:34famous character as CBS presents The Adventures of Philip Barlo. Now with General Moore
- 1:52starred as Philip Barlow, we bring you Tonight's on you usual story, The
- 1:56Heart of Gold. I had spent the day trying to decide how to spend
- 2:07the day, and finally convinced myself Sunday afternoon was a good time to catch
- 2:12up in neglected bookkeeping. I only got as far as the office door because
- 2:16a special delivery letter was stuck in the mail slot. I ripped it open
- 2:21and watched a crisp fifty dollar bill flood out of the floor, bending it
- 2:24down with my toe. I turned to the letter, which was dated Saturday.
- 2:29Dear mister Morlow, kindly investigate the party who lives at nineteen oh three
- 2:32North Odden Street to find out if his name is really Elliot Purdue what his
- 2:38occupation is. Then please come to my residence at five tomorrow Sunday. I
- 2:46live at the home of a friend, Office Stuart thirty three Lemonwood Drive in
- 2:50bel Air. I sincerely hope that fifteen hours will be a sufficient retainer.
- 2:55Who the is Helen Asher? Judging from the tone of her letter, it
- 3:01was obvious that Helen Asher didn't hire private detectives very often. Nevertheless, I
- 3:06glanced at my watch, which said I had to work very fast and I
- 3:09headed for nineteen oh three North Ogden turned out to be a small house near
- 3:14Selmer Street. He got out of my car and walked up to the door.
- 3:22Good afternoon, sir. You're the resident here, that's right. What
- 3:24do you want? I represent the doctor Potter paula public opinion. I'd like
- 3:28to ask you a few questions. For God, David, I don't have
- 3:30any opinions. Oh, even the opinions of a man with no opinions are
- 3:32important to us. Now it's just let me step inside here, got out
- 3:36my note book. There we are all right, but make it fast.
- 3:39Right now? What is your occupation? I'm an investment broken with which firm?
- 3:43I'm an independent? I see? And what is your name, sir?
- 3:46What do you need my name for? Well, for my personal records
- 3:49in case I have to come back, Elliott Perdue. And do you have
- 3:52any hobbies other than horse racing? What do you mean those dope sheets and
- 3:57racing farms there on your desk. I'm quite admire of horse flash myself quite
- 4:02a character too. Aren't you working on Sunday? And all? Well?
- 4:05You know how public opinion is, It goes right on rain shine or Sunday
- 4:10excuse me a moment. By the way, what's your name? Marlow?
- 4:14Philip Marlow? Hey, mister Marlow, stand still, because I'm not kidding
- 4:17about this gun. I'll beat it back to whoever hired you and tell them
- 4:21they're being very clumsy about a very delicate situation. One more move like this
- 4:27and they won't get another chance. I knew Purdumn business, so I left
- 4:32without an argument, and at least I had a repeat on the name Eliot
- 4:35Perdue and the occupation of Bookie across at Helen Asher when I met her at
- 4:40five o'clock in bel Air, I eventually found thirty three lemon Wood Drive,
- 4:46two hundred yards of palm tree stood at rigid attention while I drove through the
- 4:49gate after the house, and the butler opened the door. He stead at
- 4:53me like my hat was on fire? Yes, sir, or did you
- 4:58wish something see? I'd like to see missus Asher, Please, missus Asher.
- 5:02Oh, good heavens, mister Stewart, I'm Philip Marlow, mister Stewart,
- 5:08a private detective. I have an appointment with missus Asher. She at
- 5:10home. Oh, mister Marlow, perhaps you can help. I don't know
- 5:13what to do it's such a terrible thing. What's happened upstairs? Not five
- 5:15minutes ago? Missus Asher shot herself. Shut herself. Please, if you'd
- 5:18come up with me. Sure, I'm certainly grateful for your help. Mister
- 5:24Marlowe, this is her room. She's been here there. He's better all
- 5:32right. Shot herself in the left temple. Who's Glenn's at mister Stewart,
- 5:36it's mine. I kept it in the desk downstairs. You find it,
- 5:40no, Roberts did. I was out in the hothouse working with my orchids.
- 5:43You see, I've been out of town. I just came in this
- 5:46morning on the Super Chief from Chicago, and I wasn't expected back until bench.
- 5:48Yeah. If I look, mister Stewart, do you mind telling me
- 5:50how well you knew Missus Asher? Oh? Very well. Indeed, ever
- 5:54since the accident three years ago, she lived in my house under my care.
- 5:58Yes, that's how she got those scars on her cheek and neck.
- 6:01As you can see, my hands were burned at the same time. Do
- 6:05you mind telling me about it? Well, I was living in Canada at
- 6:09the time. One day my wife Florence, and I went to a camp
- 6:13near Quebec, and we met Helen Asher our first day there. She was
- 6:15a pathetic, lonely woman, a widow. The very night, while she
- 6:20was visiting us, the oil stove in our cabin exploding Larrence, my wife
- 6:26was killed. Missus Asher was severely burned. It scast I can imagine.
- 6:30Missus Asher had no one, so I thought the least I could do would
- 6:33be to care for her, since I knew the accident had been caused by
- 6:36share carelessness on my part. You took over a full responsibility for her.
- 6:41Yes, I did everything I could think of, but she never quite got
- 6:43over the shock of that night. And oh, this a it's horrible.
- 6:46Have you notified the police yet? No, you got to do it right
- 6:49now. Yes, I'll go right downstairs. And the dead woman on the
- 6:56floor had been beautiful ones I thought of by this was my clients, and
- 7:01a certain fifty dollar bill was burning a hole in my pocket. I wandered
- 7:06over to a writing table, and as I looked down, I noticed that
- 7:09the Sunday sheet had been thrown off the memo pad. It bothered me.
- 7:14Tomorrow should mean nothing to a suicide. Yet Missus Asher's memo pads showed Monday
- 7:18already. The sheep was blank, but on a hunch, I tore it
- 7:21off and stuck at my pocket. I was about to turn away when I
- 7:26saw a book of matches from the Conga Club, so I picked that up
- 7:30too, and then I left the drive around for some time trying to figure
- 7:33things out, and I went down to police headquarters to see one Lieutenmothy Borough.
- 7:39It's suicide as far as we're concerned, Marrow, everything checks. Missus
- 7:43Asher was desponded and she killed herself. She didn't leave the suicide letter,
- 7:47but I don't always I do get him honest, She pad me fifty bucks
- 7:51in advance. There out a small time bookie or worse named Delia per Due.
- 7:57Incidentally, what's the background on office toward Oh he's a big money fashioned
- 8:01designer, started his business on his wife's insurance. She died in an accident
- 8:05in Canada, and he did a lot from Missus Asher because he felt responsible.
- 8:09Yeah, yeah, I know all that. But was she left handed?
- 8:11Did Stuart came in on the super chief this morning? And was it
- 8:15the butler that found the body? That's right, we checked it off.
- 8:18Hey, Look, though, do you have any good reason to think this
- 8:20isn't suicide. No, no, not really, It's just that fifty dollars
- 8:26an advance. It bothers me. I guess. Oh, by the way,
- 8:28I've got a piece of papert like the boy in the labdin on a
- 8:31teston. Okay, sure a case, he will fix you up. I'm
- 8:35ald I figure suicide now, but I can always change my mind. I
- 8:46went down the hall of the police laboratory and handed the blank page of the
- 8:50memopad the casey. Ten minutes later, he explained that the impression showed a
- 8:54left handed person had written a number Bradshaw seven seven eleven with AI had point
- 9:00fountain pen, probably on the page just about the one I've given him.
- 9:05All right, I thank him, drop four bits and the Christmas fun bottle
- 9:07and found the phone. I dialed Glad, you're seven seven eleven and quitted,
- 9:18Hello, Hello, who's this the man in the moon? Come up
- 9:24and see me some other time. Wait a minute, I like your voice.
- 9:28And besides, seven seven eleven is a very lucky number. Three passes
- 9:31in a row. But don't let it pull you, jack. The answer
- 9:35is no dice goodbye. Yeah. Well, I gathered she was in no
- 9:43mood for playing, so I decided to be strictly business and dialed again.
- 9:48M There was no answer. I let it ring for some time, but
- 9:54Miss Golden voice obviously wasn't taking any more. Anonymous clothes had less only the
- 9:58long shot, the book of as I'd found on missus Ash's desk. The
- 10:01Conga Club was on the Sunset Strip, so I drove out there, found
- 10:05a parking space on the side street nearby, and went in. I didn't
- 10:09know exactly what I was looking for it, so I paid a buck ten
- 10:13for a scotch and soda worth forty cents, just to help pass the time.
- 10:18Mamb The spotlight was glistening down on instead of sequin contours that would have
- 10:22melted the ice age done to or fortnow and she was seen or wherever my
- 10:30man is? I am here where ever? I knew it was Benit her
- 10:46the Congress Secret song sist. I knew something else too. There was no
- 10:50mistaking that voice. She was the girl with a lucky phone number. I
- 10:54wrote her a note, called a waiter at the table to deliver it,
- 10:58and then tapped back to watch her as she glied it over and sidled into
- 11:01a chair opposite me. It was your penmanship, didn't take men and a
- 11:03lot. It was your voice and so forth, mostly the so forth that
- 11:07got me, Banita. Would you care to decide for the sanscrit you call
- 11:11a note? The waiter said, you wrote it. Sure, it says
- 11:16important to me. That's an idiom. If you wanted to talk to Turkey?
- 11:20How was you translated? Do you know a woman named Helen Asher?
- 11:24Not that I remember? Why your phone number shut up on a memo pad?
- 11:28How do you come for that? How should I know? Maybe she
- 11:31intended to call me up. Look, you're quite a handsome man, mister
- 11:35Morrow, but you look silly with your nose. Ben. Why do you
- 11:39keep sticking it into other people's business, because besides being paid for it,
- 11:43it sometimes leads to meeting interesting and beautiful people. Present company included what do
- 11:48you want? Missus Asher killed herself tonight? Missus asad? Yeah, yeah,
- 11:54and considering you said you didn't know, you look very put out about
- 11:56it? All right? All a you when? But let's have talk about
- 12:00it here and you should drink while I get out of this costume. Then
- 12:03meet me outside by the front door in ten minutes and she headed for the
- 12:13back of the club, I hitded for the front. I got out the
- 12:16door and down in my car just in time to see her leave by the
- 12:18stage entrance. She jumps into a yellow convertible, ripped down Sunset Boulevard,
- 12:22turned down to Dolheli, and straight to a halt in front of the Region
- 12:24apartments. At the door, a tall, sunburned man popped up from somewhere,
- 12:30and then the septator. It was Elliot perdu A short but hot argument
- 12:33took place in apparently Perdew won because they went in together. I found the
- 12:39name beneath him alone, over the mailbox and number five, and got through
- 12:41her apartment door just as the second round star. No, I haven't changed
- 12:46my mind, Eliot. I've been doing a little research since you threw me
- 12:48over Banita. I've got you your precious plans right here in the palm of
- 12:54my head. What are you talking about this little hot, short blocket on
- 12:58this little golden chase. Let me see on not showing this trick if you
- 13:01feel just the right moved listen, Elliott. I don't know what's ruing in
- 13:07that slimy brain of yours, but just I said, you try to monkey
- 13:09with my life again. So help me. I'll kill you not to set
- 13:13out Banita. Would you be in pursuit if I had told you that I
- 13:16know Missus Ashley's secret? And would you be impested if I told you that
- 13:20Missus asher till the top tonight? That slows you down, doesn't it?
- 13:24Bright boys? Yes, it doesn't stop me, beautiful, I'll be seeing
- 13:28you before you know it. And a now Covi and heard Benita slam the
- 13:33door and produce coattails as he left. So now I knew that for you
- 13:41a lockett and beneath him alone added up some way or a bullet in my
- 13:46head for a scarred woman with a secret. I went back to my car
- 13:50and drove out the Stewart's house in Ballein. When you were here before,
- 13:54Marlow, I was so upset. I hardly realized you were a private detective
- 13:58and you had an appointment with Missus ashe had. She hired you, yes,
- 14:01to investigate someone, But she didn't live long enough to give me a
- 14:03the the tail. What sort of trouble could she have been into have needed
- 14:07the private detective? I don't know, but perhaps you can help me find
- 14:11out by answering a few questions anything anything at ange tomorrow. Does the name
- 14:15Elliott Predue mean anything to you, mister Stewart Elliott Produe, No, I'm
- 14:18afraid not. How about Benita Malone? Yeah, I've never heard of her.
- 14:26Do you know what I mean about a heart shaped locket on a gold
- 14:28chain lockett a gold lucket? Yeah, Missus Asher had a heart shaped gold
- 14:33lucket. Where'd you keep it? Upstairs? In her jewelry box? I
- 14:35could imagine. Come on, let's have a look. Uh yeah, right
- 14:39up these stairs here this is her room. Mallow, I know I was
- 14:46here once before. Why it's not here, It's not on her dressing table,
- 14:52her jewelry box. It's gone. Made you think that I can't understand
- 14:58this. That's a locket, like what's inside just a picture. It was
- 15:01valued by Missus Asher because it is the only run she kept to herself,
- 15:03the way she looked before the accidents. Not why would anyone else want?
- 15:07Then? I don't know. When we get that locket, we'll get a
- 15:09lot of answers along with it. Yes, now, I was more convinced
- 15:18than ever that Elliott Purdue beneath her and the late Missus Asher's secret were all
- 15:22dangling from the same chain that supported the gold locket. I said good night
- 15:26thout the Stewarts, and started back for Hollywood. A moment later, I
- 15:31changed my mind and abruptly swung onto a shadowed side road and parked lights out.
- 15:35It had suddenly occurred to me that the gallivanting mister Purdue might call on
- 15:39Stewart. It's so I wanted to be on hand. Forty minutes later,
- 15:45I was about to call off the crocon dagger routine when I heard the sound
- 15:48of a powerful motor roaring out of Stewart's striveway. I looked up just in
- 15:52time to see a long black mash whip fire would Steward at the wheel.
- 16:04From the speed of the car, I was certainly wasn't going out for the
- 16:07morning papers. Decided to go back to the house and question the butler while
- 16:11I could have him to myself. Oh why no, mister Marlowe. I
- 16:14haven't any idea where mister Stuart went. I only know that he had a
- 16:17telephone call, after which he dashed out of the house highly upset. Well,
- 16:21maybe some sick friend Aid is sitting up with huh, But tell me,
- 16:23Roberts, did you ever hear of a man named Elliott Perdue. Oh,
- 16:26yes, sir, he called on missus Asher here once or twice while
- 16:30Missus Stewart was a wayn doesn't it? When did you I see this,
- 16:32mister purduell Robinson? Yesterday morning, sir, about ten o'clock. M The
- 16:37one thing more? Did you ever see missus Asher wearing a gold locke at
- 16:40a heart shaped one? Oh? Quite often, sir. As a matter
- 16:42of fact, she asked me about it just yesterday morning, shortly after mister
- 16:45Purdue left, and she couldn't locate at any place this singular coincidence? Huh.
- 16:51Oh. By the way, what do you know about a singer named
- 16:52beneath her Anita? I've never heard of her. Are you sure she's never
- 16:57been out Here's mister Stewart's guest. Why I'm positive, sir, mister Jorwartan
- 17:02never has any ladys out here of any kind. Oh, doesn't strike you
- 17:06as being strange, rabbit. That's why all. Mister Stewart's a very eligible
- 17:11widow widower. Yes, mister Marlowe, but the landerer no, good night,
- 17:15sir. As I drove back to Hollywood, I tried to figure out
- 17:26where off the Stewart is gone, but had about as much to work with
- 17:30as Gypsy rose Lee. After a third encore, after discounting Benita's place in
- 17:34the conger, there was only Elliott Purdue's house on North I've been fifteen minutes
- 17:38later, I walked up to it, but the place was as dark and
- 17:41as quiet as the inside of a coffin. I turned back to my car,
- 17:45and suddenly I caught the reflection of a sliver of light bouncing off the
- 17:49glass. Mister Prode was living alone. I found it back to a lot
- 17:56easy to bluff. A moment later, I stepped into the living lofe.
- 18:00How did you know I was here? Mister Stewart told me you're a liar.
- 18:03Arthur wouldn't often I, well, you see mister Stewart. Now,
- 18:10oh no, it's mister Stewart. Huh wait a minute. Someone outside who
- 18:15said, how many finds? You keep talking? Saying anything? I'll be
- 18:17behind the doorge here you Well, what a waste of time, my dear,
- 18:30Why you've been here rearranging my socks? I have been talking to your
- 18:33boyfriend with a lock of safely tucked away right here in my breast pocket.
- 18:37How clever of you, How absolutely ingenious. It's a bit late for nasty
- 18:41words between us, Benita, because possession of you was part of the bark
- 18:45and I struck with mister Stewart. Do you see me? What are you
- 18:48staring at my big blue eyes? Patuone, I'm over our flash. Don't
- 18:52do nothing here, outfits, you will fight them all now the gentleman's frest
- 19:02pocket here. It is Benita Satan's sound, which is just the way I
- 19:07want to kill my own gun. Why are you beautiful? Come on?
- 19:14I get nervous as one of these things in my hands, thought, here,
- 19:17thanks. Now, when I meet Phil, don't come after me because
- 19:22I'd hate to. So you pull a little hole. N Benita stepped out
- 19:36of that house. I solemnly swore I wouldn't trust another woman for the next
- 19:38hundred years. I groan from the body on the floor. Brought him back
- 19:42to nineteen forty eight and Elliot Perdue. I knew that he had seen the
- 19:47picture in the locket, so I went to work on him. Come on,
- 19:48produce stamp out, come on, oh you model. I would you
- 19:55expect sank toeto? What was't a locket? Perdue? I don't remember.
- 19:57I'd be a call on little Hennity borrow or refresh your memory. Hi John,
- 20:00and we better start playing games again. We'll start with one called slap
- 20:03Slap Perdue. No, no, let me alone. Now look at your
- 20:06hands off? Are you ready to start singing? Huh? All we need
- 20:08now is the right lyrics show come on for you talk stop it shopping on
- 20:12the talk? Good? How why did missus Ashauld kill herself? Because she
- 20:17had a good reason? Like what, that's a long story? I get
- 20:19shot? Okay, my little here goes speaking hollowly bar and there's a five
- 20:40minute old corpse lying in his living room at nineteen oh three North Ogden name
- 20:44miss Elliot Perdue. Free shots for a closed window. I was lucky.
- 20:48I ain't description to kill him. No, no, now, lucky bor
- 20:51Right now, I'm going after a songbird named benitam alone at the Region apartments
- 20:55on doheiny? Will you cover me there? Without sirens? Him person?
- 21:07It was only a healthy center fielders take from produced house to Vanitas. When
- 21:10I got there, the place was dark and the car wasn't in sight.
- 21:14I decided to try the Conger Club. As soon as I walked in,
- 21:17I began to worry because if Banita had wanted to get rid of that locket,
- 21:21she'd have had enough time to bury the forest lawn. But I didn't
- 21:23know Banita, because missus um herself was singing in the amber spotlight and dangling
- 21:30from a soft white neck was the hot shaped gold locket. Because wonderful,
- 21:40because he mind. When she caught my eyes, she smiled like I made
- 21:55a d In the moment she was through with her songs, she headed back
- 21:57in my direction. She got to me. I saw her get the high
- 22:00signed to an apron a tuxedo. He looked at her and then across to
- 22:04my table and left the room. I watched Nita glide across the floor in
- 22:08my direction. She was distinctly and guilty. Well, Phil, what do
- 22:17you think of mine? See, I'm just crazy about it that in your
- 22:19jewelry, especially that Lockett family, it was more or less handed down to
- 22:26me generations of generations. That's an old Spanish customer. Yeah, yes and
- 22:30so, and I imagine tradition prohibit your parting with it her. That's right,
- 22:34unless across someone, someone with oodles of money, offers me a lot
- 22:40of it and exchange. So naturally I did blige. I don't think you'd
- 22:45feel oblige to your mother on the second Frinday in May. Besides, I
- 22:48don't have oodles of money. You should have told me that earlier. Good
- 22:52Bye, good looking. Hey, wait a minute, we couldn't do any
- 22:55business in a minute, and don't follow me if you want to stay pretty.
- 23:04She pivoted on a slic heel and took off for a dressing room.
- 23:07And I knew that if I followed, I was scheduled for a nasty tiled
- 23:11tape with an apron a tuxedo. When I made the lower floor and saw
- 23:14that the long corridor to a room was empty, I knew the setup.
- 23:18The ape would be on the other side of the door, waiting. Banita
- 23:21still had my gun, so I got to near the substitute for a blackshack
- 23:25a full bottle of Paul my Son champagne. Then I walked noisily down the
- 23:30carridor as far as her door and knock turned a knot, slowly kicked the
- 23:33door open and stood clear. It worked. The ape. Harry Hen was
- 23:37wrapped around my gun and it came down in a knot that was never interrupted,
- 23:41and that left him off follot the ap hit the floor, and before
- 23:45Banita had a chance to close the mouth, I ripped the locket from my
- 23:48neck, picked my gun up and ran. I didn't stop until I collapsed
- 23:52against the store window and I opened up the locket. Two minutes and I
- 24:00knew before I realized what was wrong with the picture, and I knew Arthur
- 24:03Stewart's home in bel Air with my next stop. Thirty minutes later, I
- 24:15pulled up away from the place and part and keeping in the shadows. I
- 24:18approached the house were only the library and an upstairs bedroom short any light.
- 24:23The library had French windows. When I moved up place, I was taught
- 24:26by the decided a figure going through Stewar's desk. I stepped into the room
- 24:30and found it was my little friend Benita. I've got my own gun again,
- 24:34Banita. I was doing a little dusting. Honey, I'm not trying
- 24:40to How was it you're not upstairs helping Stewart pack because I've already finished packing
- 24:44to morrow. And don't turn around, O fine sucked in by a little
- 24:49decoy sprinkled with sequences. Just toss your gun on the couch over there.
- 24:55Now, that's you know, model. I can't say that. I I'm
- 25:00very sorry for you and only expect condolences from the character murdered a woman this
- 25:03afternoon and a man this evening. You killed Missus Asher. Yes, that
- 25:07black naming scum for you as well, but necessarily even as mardows here will
- 25:14be come over here and you done behind bed hurry, so let's get out
- 25:17of here, Burry, And now mister Morrow, it's time for you.
- 25:23Well, thanks, Bernita, you swing a beautiful bookend. You know I
- 25:29had you figured all on. I don't mention it, dear, I heard
- 25:32the cops coming anyway, you sweet child. Well then Harry Potter all of
- 25:37it. Oh, I figured you'd be out here when he didn't show up
- 25:40with that Songbird's place. Well, what's this? A little man on the
- 25:44floor. The large bump on his head is office to it. A man
- 25:47who killed Elliot Purdue to keep him from telling me the truth about Missus Asher
- 25:51and the man who killed her this afternoon. So Missus Asher didn't commit suicide
- 25:55after all. No, but she wasn't murdered either. She died now accident
- 26:00in Canada three years ago. What are you talking about? The woman that
- 26:03Stuart killed here? This afternoon. Wasn't Missus Asher. It was his wife,
- 26:07Missus Sparnce Stewart. You see, there must have been a mix up
- 26:10and identifying the body that the two women. At the time of the accident.
- 26:12Stuart and his wife had Missus Asher buried is Missus Stewart and they collected
- 26:18the insurance. Neat, Yeah, but what happened, That's simple. Stewart
- 26:22got bored with his scard and unattractive wife and he started running around with choice
- 26:25little numbers like Benita here. Still honest, I didn't know a thing about
- 26:29this. Stewart told me that Missus Asher depended on him so heavily that she'd
- 26:33be crushed at his seeing another woman. But I didn't know she was his
- 26:37wife. Mollow, How do you figure this all out? I'm a locket
- 26:41that belongs to the woman we knew with Missus Asher. It had a picture
- 26:44of Stuart and Missus Asher taken in dress clothes before she was scarred. Yes,
- 26:48Stewart claimed that he and his wife had only met Missus Asher the day
- 26:52of the accident, and on a camping trip at that But Phil I saw
- 26:55the picture too him. I didn't figure that out. It's because you were
- 26:59too busy trying to fit just how much the lucket was worth up the Steward
- 27:02or to anybody in cold cash. You were blinded by all the dalla signs
- 27:07in front of your eyes leading still, how can he say such things?
- 27:21Now? Mallow, Just so I don't toss and turn on, I tell
- 27:23me just why you were hired in the first place. Lather Barrett goes something
- 27:29like this. When Puju knew that he was losing Benita to Steward, he
- 27:32decided to check up on the opposition, and he not only found out what
- 27:36he wanted to know, but he found out a lot of things too that
- 27:37he didn't want to know. Missus Stewart, the late Missus Asher, became
- 27:41suspicious of his questioning, incidentally, of her husband, so she sent for
- 27:45me. Well, mallo'd Stewards certainly had meat fooled. I doped him out
- 27:49to be a very generous guy, a great benefactor who was doing the right
- 27:53thing for a lonely, unfortunate woman. Yeah, it looked like he had
- 27:59a heart of girl, all right. But the funny thing he bought it
- 28:03at the end. It was this heart of gold, this locket here that
- 28:06got him. Mind, if I keep it. You had a tough enough
- 28:10time getting hold of it. Good night felt well. By the time I
- 28:25got back to my apartment on Franklin, the sky was beginning to fill with
- 28:29a soft gray morning, and I pulled the blinds down in my bedroom and
- 28:34sat down for a last cigarette. I had mixed with a lot of funny
- 28:38people that day. For some cock had reason, I kept thinking of beneath
- 28:44him alone, a girl who was no better than she had to hear.
- 28:49Finally I put her out of my mind, and I was about to turn
- 28:52off the desk lamp when I noticed my memo pad still Guys Sunday, which
- 28:57was understandable. A square across the top sheet was a telephone number. They
- 29:03couldn't figure out how it got there. Was written in Crimson Lipstick Brad Shure
- 29:10seventh, seven eleven. The Adventures of Philip Marlowe, created by Raymond Chandler,
- 29:32stars Gerald Moore and is produced and directed by Norman McDonald's featured in tonight's
- 29:37cast where Gloria Blondelle, John Zayner, Jack Moyles, and then Wright.
- 29:41Detective Lieutenant Evara was played by Jeff Corey. The special music was conceived and
- 29:47conducted by Richard o'lance be sure to be with us again next week. When
- 29:56Philip Marlowe says they were all after it, an importer, a beautiful woman,
- 30:03a nuts and a guy I couldn't figure out. But before we withdrew,
- 30:07one was in the hospital, two in the morgue, and the fourth
- 30:10was waiting for the hangman. All that because of a blue Burgonette, something
- 30:14I'd never even heard of before. Doctor Fabian, the Ship's Doctor and Cabin
- 30:32B thirteen tells a new story of danger in far Ports tonight over most of
- 30:37the CBS Network stations. Tonight's story, The Island of Coffins, is another
- 30:42original drama by John Dixon Carr, famed mystery writer. You can hear it
- 30:48when the ship's whistles sound outside Cabin B thirteen. This is Royal Rowin speaking.
- 31:08This is CDAs for Columbia. Of all guy things that welcome back,
- 31:26you know. The one thing that's somewhat atypical about this episode is the amount
- 31:30of a cooperation that marlow gets from the police. You know, this week
- 31:36they were giving him the Nick Carter treatment, you know, letting him use
- 31:40their labs, providing him back up, which is somewhat of an atypical writing.
- 31:45Well, you know, if you've read the books, which I know
- 31:49not everyone has, Marlow definitely did not rate that sort of treatment. In
- 31:56fact, his relationship with the police was usual, somewhat antagonistic. But at
- 32:04any rate, I did think it was a nice twist on the identity of
- 32:08the murdered woman. All right, Well, listener comments and Scott commented on
- 32:19my extensive Panama Hat commentary on episode twelve eighty nine and says, didn't Green
- 32:28Street wear a bowler in a Maltese falcon? Yeah? Actually, I didn't
- 32:37make that miss mistake. He did wear the Panama hat and other movies,
- 32:42and it's kind of hard to make a bowler into a symbol of villainy,
- 32:45I guess. But at any rate, you are correct that he did wear
- 32:52the bowler and Maltese falcon. So I stand corrected. Thanks so much.
- 32:59I do appreciate it. All right, Well, I guess that will do
- 33:04it for now. Be sure and listen on Sunday we'll be having our thirteenth,
- 33:09thirteen hundredth episode special and it will be a Raymond Chandler story, but
- 33:15a very different sort of story. So you want to listen to that.
- 33:19Join us tomorrow for Nick Carter, and we'll be back again next Wednesday with
- 33:22another episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow. In the meantime, sendra comments
