- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: My name is Carmen Cook Campbell, and I live in Florida.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: I'm a mother of three and a grandmother, and I'm about to have my second grandchild come in July as well, so super excited for that.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: And I'm originally from Florida, lived up in North Carolina, traveled with my ex-husband.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: He was in the military.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: And then I've worked in the wireless...
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: industry for years.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: I did that for about 28 years in marketing and corporate sales management.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: I worked for Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T, mostly around the Atlanta area.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: So if you can't tell by the accent, I'm from the South.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: And now I'm happy to be back in Florida.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: I was a single mother there for a while with three children.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: I have a son that's 28.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: He's in the Air Force.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: I'm married and I We have the grandbaby, Brody.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: He's almost two, and then the second one coming in July.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: And then I have a daughter who lives in the Atlanta area.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: She's 22.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: And then I have a 14-year-old who is in the ninth grade, and I'm remarried now.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And we moved back to Florida, so we live in the Ocala area.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: And we live in a small town called Dunnellon, which is the home of the Rainbow River, which is a freshwater spring.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: And now I run my own business here.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: And so just super happy to be doing that now and not working in the corporate world and being able to run my own company and fulfill a dream that I've been working on for a while now.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, my
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: goodness.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: It sounds exciting.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: And to know that you're in Florida right now, I'm like, I'm envying you at this particular time.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: I'm looking out my office window, and I'm seeing snow coming down.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, oh, I wish I was in Florida right now.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: I'm like, that would have been so nice.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: No, I don't envy you, but it is cold here.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: We had a cold snap.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Last week, it was pretty warm, kind of humid, typical for Florida.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: And then it's been down in the 40s.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: So that's cold for us.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: That's cold for you.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Yes, it is.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: I had the opportunity to go down there a couple years ago, and I really love it.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: And you have a beautiful area.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: And you know what?
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: I'm just so excited to have you on.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: You're an amazing woman.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: I had the opportunity to kind of read your bio and everything about you, and you are a mompreneur.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: And I love that because when I have the opportunity to talk with other mompreneurs and women entrepreneurs, it's just absolutely inspiring.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: And I want to ask you, I know that you've said that you've developed a business and you've developed an amazing company, actually.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: I want to ask you how that came about because we'll dive into that because I think it's probably quite interesting how you came about all this.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Well, once again, like I was saying, I was a single mom at the time back in 2009, 2010.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: And I was working 60 hours plus a week in the corporate world.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: And I didn't get to see my kids as much as possible that I wanted to.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: And, you know, there was a time that I was laid off and I had a severance package.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: And so I kind of took that time to start exploring other avenues where I could work from home or have my children involved.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: with the business as well and my youngest son well he's 14 now but at the time he was an infant and he always had diaper rash and we were always dealing with diaper rash creams and we would travel and go out and about when I was off work I'd spend as much time as I could with my children and take them on outings and we'd go do things and we were constantly having to pull over on the side of the road or use the stroller at a park or somewhere and he would get diaper rash cream all over him, all over me.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: It's sticky, greasy, messy, wouldn't come off.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: So one night I was watching TV and it was the Danny Deutch show, There's Got to Be a Better Way.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: And I was changing his diaper and he squirmed away from me, got it all over the carpet, the furniture, everywhere.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: And I said, aha, I have to come up with something that's easier and less messy and fast to put diaper rash cream on.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: And I said, here's my opportunity to So during my layoff period, that's when I started doing a lot of research and went online.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: And lo and behold, just kept looking into different things.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: And I said, you know what, I'm going to go for it.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: So I still had to get a full-time job again.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: So I went to work for Verizon.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: And then in 2009, I decided to– apply for my provisional patent.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: So I looked at how to do it on your own because at the time I just didn't have the funds to do that.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: So I scraped up$110 and I put some drawings together and I filed for my provisional patent.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: And once I got the notification back from the patent office, I decided, well, we're on our way.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: So I hired an attorney.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: I started raising capital.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: And on my days off, After the kids were in bed, I was working the wee hours in the morning, 2, 3 in the morning.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I didn't even go to bed.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: I'd take a shower and go straight to work.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: So I found the opportunity in the times when I wasn't spending it with my children to work on my product, which is now called Swabies.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: And I love the story, the journey that you've taken in order to get that.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: And to be an entrepreneur, you definitely go through the trials and tribulations in order to get to that point.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: And when I was looking at your website, I'm like, this is amazing.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: I wish I would have had this when my girls were younger.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: And I think that would have made all the difference.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: I had four girls in six years.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: And I thought, you know what, this would have come in handy quite a bit.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: If I had at least a dollar for everybody that said that, I wouldn't even need to sell the product.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: Oh,
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: my goodness.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: You know, what's great about the product, too, is it's not just for babies.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: He's 14, and he uses it for his acne breakouts before he goes to bed, like spot treatment.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: So we found many other uses for the cream.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Oh, wow.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: But, yeah, so I just worked on that off and on over the years because, you know, to come up with an idea is one thing.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: Actually, yeah.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: turn it into a product a physical product and actually you know bring it to market is a whole another ball game and it takes a lot of planning and you think you have enough money and you think you you know you're going to do it within a year no it ends up being you know costing way more than you expected and taking a lot longer than you expected as well but I never gave up I've been working on this off and on you know since 2010 and then we We officially launched September of 2019 in all the U.S.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: bye-bye baby stores.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: So we're super excited to be on their shelves.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: And then since then, we're on Macy's.com, Amazon, Groupon.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: We're looking at Walmart.com next.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: So we have several different retail vendors that we're talking with.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's extraordinary.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: Wow, good for you.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: Congratulations, because it is a hard thing to become an entrepreneur and to do it and to keep going.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: I know a lot of people, they get frustrated and they give up.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: And I always say that, you know, if you keep digging, you never know when that diamond's going to hit.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: And you've definitely found your diamond.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: It is definitely coming and happening for you.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: And I just think it's absolutely amazing.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's the biggest thing is not giving up and just keep going and going and going.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: And now this is what I do full time.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: We have an office and we're just super excited on the milestones we've reached so far.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: We've been on several this past year.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: Actually, in December, November, December, we've been on six different major cities on TV networks, ABC, NBC, CBS, CW.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: We've been in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Sacramento, Houston.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: So we're super excited of having our product presented on all those TV networks as well.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: And then back in October, I was on the Entrepreneur Elevator Pitch show.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: I was invited out to LA.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: It's to like a shark tank, but it's put on by Entrepreneur Magazine.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: So I was on their season five, episode four for that.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: Oh, my goodness.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, more and more exposure now.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: It's just amazing the people I've met.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: And as being a mompreneur and a baby product, it's actually kind of a small world when you start– you know, talking to other inventors and mompreneurs and baby products.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: You keep running into them in different avenues, trade shows, online, Facebook groups.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: So it's amazing to collaborate with them as well.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: Isn't that the key?
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: You know, if you can meet with like-minded individuals, you know, amazing things can happen.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: And you've actually even gotten a couple of awards from that too.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: We've gotten the NCW Eco Excellence Award in 2018 and the Baby Maternity Retail Magazine, we've gotten their top choice in the baby care for 2019.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: We also won an American Graphic Design too on our packaging.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: We won the American Graphic Design, our design group did.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's amazing.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: I love that because I was just going to mention, like, those packaging is just beautiful, you know, how they came up with that, and I like that a lot.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they did a fantastic
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: job.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: And that's been a lot of things that I've had to work through, manufacturing hurdles.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: First we went to China, and then now we make it in the U.S.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: for the same costs as we were getting in China, which is phenomenal.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: That's very difficult to do.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: Oh,
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: excellent.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: And we had to go through several of those hurdles with mold designs and everything.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: So that's part of the journey is having to work through all those hurdles as well.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: You know, there's so many details that are involved.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: I just want to ask you, like for any of the ladies that are listening today, because we have a lot of women from around the world that tune to our program, what kind of tips can you give them for people to help them on the journey of becoming an entrepreneur.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: If they have, you know, these dreams of products that they want to start promoting and sharing, what is a tip that you can share with them?
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: Well, to do your research, do research and talk to other people who have been there, done that.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of lessons you're going to learn along the way and you're going to make the mistakes, but, That's okay because you're learning.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: Keep going.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: And the biggest tip is to never give up.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Tenacity and perseverance.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: And you can make it happen.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: It's all about the mindset and the positivity and just finding the right people to work with and finding the right team.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: And if that one doesn't work, then find somebody else.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: Just keep going.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: They're out there.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: I went through three patent attorneys before I found the one that could get it done.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: Oh, my goodness.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: And those are so true words.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: You know, it definitely, you have to surround yourself with people that are going to, you know, support you and empower you and inspire you in every way and, you know, to help you on that journey and to believe in you.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: And I love that.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: So let's talk about some other things now.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: You are also, there's a lot of other things that are important to you.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: I want to talk about different causes that are important to you right now.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: Is there anything that's, that kind of stands out, the things that you like to work with, other causes out there?
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: First of all is babies and moms.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: That's very important.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: Our product is all organic, all natural.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: And until I started this journey, I did not realize what type of chemicals that are out there in a lot of these products on the shelves that are not good for ourselves or our babies.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: And some even have different lawsuits and things like that.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: So I decided not only was I going to have a better way to help parents and caregivers apply Dapper Rapids, cream, but was to also healthy, organic, all natural, but to have something that works because a lot of your products out there, you know, if they're organic, they take forever to work or they don't work at all.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: So I had to create and formulate a product that was going to be healthy, organic, and natural, but also work fast and safe and effective.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: So we are a proud national sponsor with the March of Dimes now.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: So for every gift set box that we sell on Macy's.com, Amazon, and our website, we give a dollar back to the March of Dimes.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Plus we'll be going to their local marches and having a table and set up.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: So we definitely believe in that.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: And then also we have a manufacturer that assembles our products.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: And what they do is they hire and train adults with disabilities So we love giving back to the community as well.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: So those are the two causes that we support right now.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: And you're spreading love and kindness.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: And I think that's really important because, you know, that's what the Divas That Care is all about is, you know, talking with amazing women like yourself that are really inspiring and changing the world and not just with your business, but in other avenues too.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: And when you can, you know, repay that, you know, I think it's so important.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: And I want to thank you so much for doing that.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Sure, sure.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: We do everything with gratitude and you have to.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: You have to give back to the community because it's not just about us.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: No, it isn't.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: Well, thank you so much.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Is there anything else that you would love to share with us?
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: Is there anything happening in 2020 that any of our listeners can be a part of?
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: We're also working with another nonprofit group called Squat for Change, and this is a gentleman who's gone viral on social media.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: And what he's doing is showing the equality of fatherhood and, you know, that it takes a village to raise a child, and fathers need to be involved as well.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: And he's promoting...
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: putting diaper changing stations into public restrooms and the men's public restrooms.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Oh, I love that.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: Most of the women, yeah, most of the women's public restrooms have, you know, your restaurants, your malls, et cetera.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: They have a baby changing table or station, but a lot of your men's restrooms do not.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: And you have fathers that are out and about with their children.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: So he's really putting on a great cause there.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: So we're also working with him and helping create awareness as well.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: And then we have, Once again, several big box retailers we're talking to, CVS, Walgreens, Meyers.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: So we're working at getting product into those stores as well in 2020.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: So we have a lot of great things going on.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: It sounds like it.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: That we're planning for, yep.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: And we're also just joined with two other mompreneurs and created what we call a, it's called the Top Box.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: And it's a subscription box, but the very first box is a keepsake box where it's like the new baby book.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: It's an actual box that you can put the stats in.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: You have little baggies that you can put the baby's keepsakes, whether it's the clipping of their hair.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: And then it's going to have products, and you have three boxes.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: The first one is a keepsake box, and then the other two will just be cardboard, but they're going to have products from zero to three, six to nine, and 12 to 24 months.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: So I just collaborated with a couple of mompreneurs with their products, so we just launched that last week.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: Oh, my goodness.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: That's so exciting.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: And what a cool thing.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: How can our listeners get a hold of that?
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: Or how, you know, do you have any website where they can check that out?
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: Sure, sure.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: They just go to mytotbox.com.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: My Tot Box.
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: Perfect.
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: And how can they go and check out your website?
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: I think that's really important for our listeners to check out exactly what Swabies is all about.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: And can they purchase their products right online?
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: It's swabiescream.com.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: And they can purchase there.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Right now we have free shipping.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: Or they can go to Amazon.com.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: We are looking for some reviews.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: So if they would go to Amazon.com, that would help as well.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: Because we're always doing reviews and shares on social media.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: So...
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: Oh, isn't that, that's the fun thing on social media is to definitely get that.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: So we'll, we'll ask our listeners out there to, to check out Swabies.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: And if you've got some young ones at home, or if you know of anybody that has a baby, you know, perhaps you can give them this information so that they can check it out and, you know, purchase the product, because I think this is something they're going to really like, and also do a review for you.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: And I think that would be absolutely perfect.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: I appreciate it.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: And then we're also, like I said, it's not just for babies.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: So, you know, we're looking into nursing homes.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: We're looking into, you know, children's hospitals and different facilities like that that we're going to be branching out to as well.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: We're going to be marketing to athletes, bicyclers, beach goers.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: So Swabies isn't just for babies.
- 19:59UNKNOWN: Okay.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: Well, that's perfect.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: And, you know, maybe that's something that we can do and we can, we'll have you if you don't mind, Carmen, coming on to the Changemakers Cafe.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: It's a group that we have with our listeners and the women that have been on our program.
