- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: Hey everybody, Brian Smith here with the I&T series and your daily influence.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: And today, I'm going to be talking about hope and specifically about how hope on its own really doesn't get us anywhere.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: Makes us feel very, but it doesn't get us anywhere, because
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: What whole is is where things start, and it's the vision of what we want to be or achieve.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: But hopefully itself, it's just not enough.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's not the destination.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: It's the spark.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: If we stop at hope, we risk getting stuck in wishing, and today I'm going to walk a path with you,
- 1:24[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to go from hope to goals to action.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_00]: And I really want everybody to see.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_00]: So you'll get to see how hope becomes an attainable process.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_00]: And it is a progress that will take you to good places.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: As I said, the beginning is hope is a seed.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_00]: It gives us our first image or glimpse of possibility.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_00]: Well, hope it makes us feel like there is a way out of whatever is influenced in us to have that hope.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: And it starts a motion.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_00]: It gives us energy.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes it's not always positive energy.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: Hope can create negativity also.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: It can make us look at things differently, especially when we add other things in our mindset, like bias, but it is a internal desire or something that's better.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: But at this stage, you know, hope is still very abstract.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_00]: It's like saying, I want things to improve.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: That's a hope, but what are we going to do about that?
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: You know, how are we going to visualize that?
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: Imagine, you know, planting that seed.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's alive, but it needs something to go past the hope.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that's really,
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: what the next phase is, I'm hoping that people can take away from this there, you know, we have to turn our hope and to go, we're going to define that vision.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to get past all.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: To transition, it's kind of a ball, it's kind of a ball into a goal.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_00]: And it's going to get past
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: How do I get there?
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: Now we, we like to teach smartphones, obviously.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_00]: But the smart lens for us is so much more.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's not just a goal.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's not just an action smart is a discipline.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_00]: And through the smart lens, we can turn and pull into something specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: We can hope to be healthier to a walk 20 minutes a day for days or week for the next month.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: I hope that things will get better into clearly defining what better is.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_00]: So hope reads more than just that feeling.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_00]: You've got to clearly define it.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_00]: You've got to give it a well, something with purpose.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: And those become powerful only when we act on them.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: And this is where influence, past the influence of the hope that makes us feel better, what influence on ourselves and others can become real.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's not just about words either.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I get tired of hearing about hope and change and where did the hope go?
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the hope got lost because nobody picked it up and carried it anywhere.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody set the goals.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: Or the goals were set.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody turned those goals.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_00]: into the actions that they needed.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_00]: Did they give up on vote, or did they pivot to something new?
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: Did they fail to follow through on what that hope was and how it made them feel and replaced it with, you know, settling justification.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_00]: But look, the only way we can
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: reach what we hope for is to establish the goal and then turn it into action, make it a verb, make it something that we move into, move through, take with us.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_00]: They become very powerful, hope becomes amazingly powerful.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_00]: We'll make give it action.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: actually creates feedback loops, accountability, and momentum.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_00]: You have to build these in, measure your progress.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: It ensures that progress when we add smart to it.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: It gives us that foundation, but smart can be the discipline also.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: You can
- 5:36[SPEAKER_00]: Bleen into asking for more specifics.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: You can ask yourself, measure where you're going, how you've gotten to where you are.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: How can I get to the next milestone?
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: The next measure you post.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_00]: And holding yourself accountable to what that plan is.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: Make sure that your providers, those feedback loops in giving you the feedback you need to measure your progress, to check your energy.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: to see others are going along with you if you've lost them, is there clarity, is there understanding, and is the purpose still positive and responsible?
- 6:15[SPEAKER_00]: Things grow when we feed them, when we tend to them, when we move with them, when we work with them, things get stagnant, they stop moving forward, when we take them for granted when we ignore them,
- 6:32[SPEAKER_00]: And as we move through this process of hope goals, tactics, objectives, action, is it form prudent, is our hope bringing improvement, not only for ourselves, but within our areas of influence.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_00]: Look, not everything we hope for is going to have the positive results that we originally envisioned.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_00]: There are always intended and unintended consequences.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: But sustained action will lead to that movement.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: Sustained action will lead to fulfilling the path to that hope, to whatever that hope is supposed to bring us.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: Sustained action leads to that growth.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: But we have to ensure that that growth that change is an improvement.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_00]: And again, not just an improvement for self, but an improvement within our self and our overall area of influence and keep checking that.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_00]: The influence shifts from internal or own to external others, improvements not only achieve the goal, but inspiring the next cycle and the next cycle.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_00]: Cycles of both can be healthy.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: If those cycles of both don't just fall flat, if they go from hope to goal to action.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: So, a plant that bears fruit and take that away and you do something with it.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_00]: you spread it, you pass it on, you get people to understand it, have clarity with it.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: This is where hope can bring us to those improvements.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that we hope for.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_00]: So, the hope is a good start.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_00]: It plants the seed of what we want, but seeds alone don't grow.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: They need definition, they need structure and action.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_00]: And by turning hope into smart goals and those goals into smart actions,
- 8:29[SPEAKER_00]: real improvement and real improvement is that positive change that we all hope for.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_00]: So it'll get stuck in hope, use it as your starting point, then act intentionally until your growth into improvement, you can see, measure and share.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you for joining me today on daily influence.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: I hope that you will join us again tomorrow.
