Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / Mar-a-Lago shooting Armed man killed at Trumps FL home
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The Secret Service says a man in his early twenties,
- 0:02Speaker 1: caring what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can,
- 0:06Speaker 1: entered a restricted area around Trump's Palm Beach, Florida home
- 0:09Speaker 1: early this morning before he was shot and killed by authorities.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I want to bring in CNN's Julia Benbrook. She's at
- 0:15Speaker 1: the White House. So, Julia, how is the President's team
- 0:18Speaker 1: responding to this?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Yeah? The most important thing to note here is that
- 0:22Speaker 2: President Donald Trump and First Lady Milania Trump, they were
- 0:25Speaker 2: here at the White House at the time of this incident,
- 0:28Speaker 2: but they travel often to their mar A Lago estate.
- 0:31Speaker 2: In fact, the President has been there almost every weekend
- 0:35Speaker 2: in recent weeks. During a press briefing that took place
- 0:38Speaker 2: earlier today, the Palm Beach County Sheriff Rick Bradshaw, standing
- 0:42Speaker 2: with representatives from the FBI and Secret Service, he detailed
- 0:46Speaker 2: what they know now. He said that a man around
- 0:49Speaker 2: one point thirty in the morning made it into the
- 0:51Speaker 2: perimeter at mar A Lago, and that a deputy and
- 0:55Speaker 2: two Secret Service agents on the detail went to investigate.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Take a listen.
- 1:03Speaker 3: They confronted a white male that was carried a gas
- 1:06Speaker 3: can and a shotgun. He was ordered to drop those
- 1:11Speaker 3: two pieces of equipment that he had with them, at
- 1:15Speaker 3: which time he put down the gas can raised the
- 1:20Speaker 3: shotgun to a shooting position. At that point in time,
- 1:23Speaker 3: the deputy and the two Secret Service agents fired their
- 1:26Speaker 3: weapons and neutralized the threat. He has deceased at the scene.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Authorities have said that this man was in his early
- 1:35Speaker 2: twenties and from North Carolina. He was reported missing recently
- 1:39Speaker 2: by a family member. Now, the sheriff did say that
- 1:42Speaker 2: his deputies are always wearing body cameras and so we
- 1:46Speaker 2: could see some of that footage in the future there.
- 1:49Speaker 2: But the FBI is the lead agency on this. They
- 1:53Speaker 2: will be responsible for handling any questions going forward. And
- 1:57Speaker 2: we did hear from FBI Director Cash Fatell a little
- 1:59Speaker 2: while ago. He posted on social media. He said quote,
- 2:03Speaker 2: the FBI is dedicating all necessary resources in the investigation
- 2:07Speaker 2: of this morning's incident at President Trump's mar Lago, where
- 2:10Speaker 2: an armed individual was shot and killed after unlawfully entering
- 2:14Speaker 2: the perimeter. We will continue working closely with Secret Service
- 2:18Speaker 2: as well as state and federal partners, and will provide
- 2:21Speaker 2: updates as we are able. They are currently processing the
- 2:24Speaker 2: scene and analyzing any evidence They've also asked people in
- 2:28Speaker 2: the area that if they have any doorbell camera footage
- 2:31Speaker 2: that does seem suspicious could be related to this, that
- 2:34Speaker 2: they should contact authorities.
- 2:37Speaker 1: All right, thank you, Julia. Still a lot of questions
- 2:39Speaker 1: at this point. I want to bring in CNA Chief
- 2:41Speaker 1: Law Enforcement and Intelligence Analyst John Miller. You've been talking
- 2:44Speaker 1: to your sources here. What does this investigation look like
- 2:47Speaker 1: at this point.
- 2:49Speaker 4: Well, what they're trying to do, Omar, is to backtrack
- 2:52Speaker 4: through the last twenty four hours or more since this
- 2:55Speaker 4: individual was reported missing. He's a twenty two year old
- 2:58Speaker 4: man from the area of Cameron, North Carolina, and it
- 3:02Speaker 4: appears he drove there to mar A Lago. One of
- 3:06Speaker 4: the things that was found in the vehicle, his Volkswagen SUV,
- 3:11Speaker 4: was the box for the shotgun. So investigators believe that
- 3:15Speaker 4: he left his North Carolina home, stopped along the way
- 3:19Speaker 4: perhaps and purchased that shotgun and the gasoline, and then
- 3:24Speaker 4: drove to mar A Lago. One of the questions is
- 3:27Speaker 4: how did he get into that perimeter. It appears that
- 3:30Speaker 4: as an employee was leaving and opened the gate to
- 3:34Speaker 4: walk out, he caught the gate and walked in. He
- 3:37Speaker 4: made it about twenty to thirty yards before he was
- 3:40Speaker 4: confronted in that perimeter by two Secret Service agents and
- 3:45Speaker 4: a deputy Palm Beach County sheriff. And as the sheriff said,
- 3:49Speaker 4: according to their report, and the deputy does have body camera,
- 3:53Speaker 4: as he was ordered to put down the shotgun and
- 3:56Speaker 4: the gas can. He put down the gas can, raised
- 3:59Speaker 4: the shotgun into a firing position, and all three, both
- 4:03Speaker 4: agents and the deputy fired, killing him.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Do we know if the shotgun was loaded? I mean,
- 4:09Speaker 1: obviously pointing a weapon at law enforcement prompts the reaction
- 4:14Speaker 1: that they had here, But just on the back end
- 4:17Speaker 1: of this, do we know if that shotgun was actually loaded?
- 4:21Speaker 4: You know, it's a good question, Omar, because as you
- 4:23Speaker 4: point out, there's no way that those law enforcement officers
- 4:26Speaker 4: would have known by seeing the shotgun whether it was
- 4:29Speaker 4: loaded when it was pointed at them. But the question
- 4:31Speaker 4: goes directly to what was his intent of going into
- 4:35Speaker 4: that perimeter. Did he know that President Trump wasn't there
- 4:38Speaker 4: and was at the White House? Was his specific intent?
- 4:42Speaker 4: Suicide by cop, which we've seen in a number of
- 4:45Speaker 4: these incidentss where people cause the police because of their
- 4:49Speaker 4: own depression mental health issues, whatever it is to take
- 4:53Speaker 4: their lives. Whether or not that shotgun is loaded will
- 4:57Speaker 4: give us a better indicator of that when we find
- 5:01Speaker 4: that information out from the FBI. But right now I
- 5:04Speaker 4: don't know the answer to that, but it's a good question.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Yeah, a lot of questions still in this early stages
- 5:10Speaker 1: of the investigation. John Miller appreciate the time as always
