- 0:00Get laced up. Let's go. It's time for Banter
- 0:04with the Boys. Yo, football family. Welcome back
- 0:16to Gridiron Updates. I'm Banter with the Boys.
- 0:19We've got Justin in the house over here. Kevin
- 0:22spinning the tracks behind us in the cameras.
- 0:26And we're talking some news. And starting off,
- 0:30Phillip Rivers, unretiring and coming back to
- 0:35the Indianapolis Colts to replace Daniel Jones'
- 0:42season -ending injury. Does he have anything
- 0:47left in the tank, Justin? He's got these kids.
- 0:50He's got to support. He's going to be slinging
- 0:51this thing if he needs to. He's got like 17 kids
- 0:54for number 17. That's fun news. Yeah, they need
- 1:00a little spark, so throw anything on the wall
- 1:03and see what sticks. Obviously, Leonard doesn't
- 1:06seem to be the quarterback that they think is
- 1:09going to be able to make that last -second playoff
- 1:11push with that last tough schedule. Other fun
- 1:15news, Miles Garrett's journey to the NFL sack
- 1:19record. He's sitting at 19 sacks right now, 22
- 1:25.5. TJ Watts. Yeah, that's the record. And is
- 1:29it Strahan? Yeah, I think it is. The old Giants
- 1:34last morning news dude now. Yep. But he's been
- 1:40wearing like a little of the 25. So that 25 is
- 1:43the number he wants to hit. So he needs four
- 1:46more to get to 23. Four games left. Could happen.
- 1:51I mean, I hope it does. It's always fun to, you
- 1:53know, and he's been a stud playing on a crappy
- 1:56team. So a little enjoyment for the dog pound.
- 2:01It'll probably be well appreciated. What else
- 2:06do you got on? Hey, I don't have a ton of injuries
- 2:08other than Danny and, you know, a few known really
- 2:11important coming back fantasy wise. Yeah. Yeah,
- 2:15from a fantasy standpoint, some of the major
- 2:17impacts are Zach Ertz being out for the year
- 2:20with his ACL tear against Minnesota, just devastating
- 2:23injury, which just is part of the game. You've
- 2:27got non -fantasy, but Trey Hendrickson going
- 2:32down for core muscle surgery will be out the
- 2:35rest of the year. I mean, if you had the Bengals
- 2:37defense, it may affect you. If you did bless
- 2:40your heart, you probably shouldn't. Yeah, you
- 2:41should be picking up somebody else. Going back
- 2:44to the Philip Rivers piece, you had not only
- 2:49is Riley Leonard injured, but you also have Richardson,
- 2:54who they drafted a few years back, that just
- 2:57has not been it, had an orbital fracture. It
- 3:01doesn't look like he'll be. getting off of IR
- 3:04in time for the Seahawks game. So it really makes
- 3:07sense why they bring in someone like Phillip
- 3:09Rivers. Shadur Sanders, named by the Browns,
- 3:13is the starter for the rest of the season, which
- 3:15I think if you ask a lot of Browns fans, probably
- 3:17should have happened a bit ago just with how
- 3:19their season's been going and how things have
- 3:21transpired. Outside of that, some things to watch
- 3:25is you have CeeDee Lamb, not sure what's going
- 3:28on with him in the concussion protocol, took
- 3:29a really nasty hit last week. game uh hopefully
- 3:33um George Pickens can get his head out of his
- 3:37butt and figure out how to catch a ball and run
- 3:39routes. He was so hot. He had like three weeks.
- 3:41I don't get it. Choosing not to play. Yeah. He's
- 3:44such a knucklehead. Well, it's just so between
- 3:48his ears is where it's his biggest. He's so much
- 3:51talent. So much. But he just gets frustrated
- 3:54and then quits. And then everyone kind of starts
- 3:58turning on him, which happened at Pittsburgh
- 4:00too. Any other injuries you saw? Last major one
- 4:05that I saw was that you had T. Higgins has re
- 4:09-entered the concussion protocol after just getting
- 4:12out of it in their game against the Bills. So
- 4:15he's having a rough go at it. That's not what
- 4:16you want to see. And then, of course, Jaden Daniels,
- 4:20don't know what's going to happen with him for
- 4:21the rest of the year with another elbow injury,
- 4:24whether or not it re -aggravated the same injury
- 4:26or it's a different one. I guess I'm not surprised
- 4:30either way, but I would... think he would not
- 4:33come back for the rest of the season. Probably
- 4:35not for the playoffs. To watch. Yeah. On his
- 4:40100 -inch screen at home. Kevin, let's talk a
- 4:44little playoff pitchers right now. We'll start
- 4:46off here with the AFC East and kind of give you
- 4:49the top seven. If the playoffs started today,
- 4:52Denver Broncos leading at 11 -2. Still... Haven't
- 5:01officially clinched that, and they got some division
- 5:04games coming up. They got New England Patriots,
- 5:08which is surprising, but I'm starting to believe.
- 5:14They start playing against some teams that they
- 5:17shouldn't be competitive with in my mind, and
- 5:20they are. There's magic there between May and
- 5:24Vrabes. Oh, my gosh. There's something there
- 5:29that they're building. I don't want to talk down
- 5:32to their team because they have great wide receivers.
- 5:34They have great running backs. They spend a lot
- 5:36of money in free agents. They don't have these
- 5:38household name players yet. These players are
- 5:42out there saying, I'm going to make my name a
- 5:44household name. It's like the Patriot way of
- 5:45backing Belichick. It is. Come on in. You've
- 5:49got Baby Brady out there just slinging it. I
- 5:53think it's a good mix of the Belichick tree,
- 5:56but also Vrabes doing it his own way and being
- 5:59that player's coach. It's a lot of fun to watch
- 6:02them. Yeah, moving down the list there, Jacksonville
- 6:04Jaguars. It's just Trevor Lawrence having probably
- 6:08his best year. It seems like it. I mean, maybe
- 6:13I haven't really looked statistically, but I
- 6:14feel like their team overall is a little more
- 6:17competitive. And if I was playing against them,
- 6:21I'd be like, eh. Maybe not this year. It's that
- 6:24easy old Jaguars of the past. They are the leaders
- 6:28of the South currently, so their playoff chances
- 6:31is 98%. I think that's what I came up with here
- 6:35mathematically. Moving down to the last division
- 6:39leader, the Pittsburgh Steelers with a big win
- 6:41over the Ravens. Limping along to the finish
- 6:44line is what it feels like with the AFC North.
- 6:46Yeah, it's still not over. So we talked about
- 6:50that a little bit. episode if you want to get
- 6:52deeper into the Ravens Steelers conversation
- 6:54on the Charters 9 and 4 on the current first
- 6:59wildcard team Like we talked about, two games
- 7:03behind the Broncos. They do play, I think we
- 7:06talked about one more time. Yeah, I believe so,
- 7:08yep. And then Bills, I think they have to play
- 7:12with the Patriots. But the Patriots have a two
- 7:14-game lead now, so even if the Bills do end up
- 7:17getting one win, the Patriots are going to have
- 7:20to help them. Yeah, absolutely. For that division.
- 7:23And then rounding off, Houston at 8 -5, riding
- 7:27a five -game winning streak. Defense, oh, my
- 7:30goodness. They're coming around. I mean, that
- 7:33front and back. We talked about in the preseason
- 7:36about how good that hold, you know, the edges
- 7:39are with Anderson and Hunter and then the backside
- 7:42of the cornerbacks and secondaries. Just, yeah,
- 7:46so. Then on the bubble, Colts. They're going
- 7:51to keep being on the bubble. Their bubble's about
- 7:52to be popped, unfortunately. You've got the Ravens
- 7:55there, right? The Chiefs aren't technically out,
- 7:58even though they're out of the division, but
- 7:59they're going to need a lot of people to do them
- 8:01a lot of favors, and they're going to have to
- 8:02win out, those two teams, I think. If you look
- 8:04at it, Texans at 8 -5, and they're 6 -7 the Chiefs,
- 8:07so they're two games out, four games to go. Officially
- 8:11eliminated, the Jets, Jets, Jets, the Dog Pound
- 8:16Browns, the... Raiders. Raiders. And then the
- 8:21Titans with last year's first -round pick. Yeah.
- 8:25So they're looking like, I mean, I think are
- 8:27they technically, officially first? I think they
- 8:31are the first. Two and 11. Yeah, two and 11.
- 8:34Giants. Yeah, it's Giants, Titans, and Raiders
- 8:37are all vying for that first overall pick right
- 8:40now. But they got a W this last week, so. I don't
- 8:44think they want the first -round pick. They want
- 8:46some better mojo coming into the offseason. If
- 8:48they could win out or something like that, they'd
- 8:50prefer getting probably the eighth pick. Yeah,
- 8:52Browns are trying to make it closer. That's why
- 8:53they threw away that two -point conversion. All
- 8:55right, let's move to the NFC pitcher. Rams, 10
- 9:00-3, holding that first in the bye. Looking good.
- 9:03Matt Stafford leading the league in touchdowns,
- 9:06what they're doing with that group, and their
- 9:08defense is insane. They're probably consistently
- 9:12or most people would probably pick them to be
- 9:17the NFC championship. For sure, get to the game
- 9:19at the very least. Because they're trending upwards.
- 9:22Packers second at 9 -3 -1, leading the North.
- 9:27I'd put them in that boat, that NFC championship.
- 9:31Eagles third at 8 -5. They look like the team
- 9:35falling out right now. The Cowboys, you know,
- 9:40they got the lock in their hand. The Cowboys
- 9:43are 6 -6 -1, so they still have a two -game lead
- 9:47on them. So a little cushion. Tampa Bay, 7 -6.
- 9:51I mean, that's a feisty division. They're tied
- 9:54with the Panthers. Must have the tiebreaker somewhere
- 9:57in there. Sea Chickens, 10 -3. God, they've kind
- 10:05of fallen off my shelf of NFC contenders a little
- 10:09bit after how we played against Darnold and then
- 10:13how the first half of this last week's game started
- 10:17off slow again. They did heat up in the second
- 10:20half, but also who were they playing? They're
- 10:24playing the Falcons. Yeah, and the Falcons completely
- 10:27second half. I think teams are figuring out if
- 10:32you bottle up JSN, he's going to get loose at
- 10:35some point, but he's not having the 100 -plus
- 10:38games he did. He's still getting to 100 or close
- 10:40to 100. He's having these really good games,
- 10:42but he's not going off in the way he was the
- 10:44first half of the season where you're like, this
- 10:46guy is going to break every receiving record
- 10:48known to man. So I think that's part of it. Defense
- 10:52is still great. I think part of it is also, for
- 10:55me at least, recency bias because you're not
- 10:58seeing as much of them on the national stage
- 11:00right now as you were. They were in some national
- 11:02games, primetime games, where you got to see
- 11:04what they were doing. So you're not seeing as
- 11:07much of that. So I think there's a little bit
- 11:09of that there too. But there's definitely something
- 11:10that's fallen off. At halftime, it was... 6 -6
- 11:14with the Seahawks and the Falcons, and then you
- 11:17turn around and I don't think the Falcons scored
- 11:19another point and the Seahawks took it away.
- 11:20They're still a great team, but you're not seeing
- 11:23that consistent dominance that you're seeing
- 11:25from teams like the Rams. We were talking about
- 11:28three weeks ago because they were in the top
- 11:30five in points per game. I guess they still scored
- 11:35a ton of points last week. But there's something
- 11:38in the tape. I think some defense coordinators
- 11:40are figuring out where Darnold wants to go on
- 11:43his first read. For sure. I don't. I want to
- 11:47give credit to Vikings here a little bit and
- 11:49B -Flow, but what they showed during that game,
- 11:52if there's any bright spot about the Vikings'
- 11:56performance during that game against Seattle,
- 11:58it was the defense. I think you're starting to
- 12:00see some of these really good defenses where
- 12:02they can slow some of these playmakers down.
- 12:04Other teams, because it's a copycat league, are
- 12:06starting to figure it out. I think some of that's
- 12:09starting to simmer a little bit. Yeah, and there's
- 12:11a lot of tape out there now. Every team has played
- 12:1513. 13, 14 games. Thanks, Common Man. A few K
- 12:20-fan people. We'll slide down the rest of the
- 12:2549ers in that division. That West still, who
- 12:28knows which direction. Brock's back. They just
- 12:31keep getting dubs. How did they get to nine wins
- 12:34with how many injuries they had? I know. They've
- 12:37just capitalized on the sloppy, ugly games and
- 12:39pulled them out. I feel like the Vikings played
- 12:42that same season a few years ago when we had
- 12:45Don. Had the most one -score wins. Almost gave
- 12:51me a heart attack. Then you got the Chicago Bears
- 12:54still holding on the 7th at 9 -4. That NFC North,
- 12:59they kind of switched places with the Vikings.
- 13:01Yeah. The same thing as last year, three NFC
- 13:03North teams fighting for playoff spots. You and
- 13:08they're all on the Bears finishing enough. to
- 13:10make the playoffs. All right. This is not bitterness
- 13:13or anything against the bears. This is just facts.
- 13:15I'm out on the bears. I think they're a great
- 13:18team. They could be wrong and they could be the
- 13:20seven seed, but. I think as a friend outside
- 13:26of this world says to me, the trend is your friend,
- 13:29and the trend right now is the Detroit Lions.
- 13:32I know we had a really good game against them,
- 13:35but you look at what they've done. They still
- 13:38have to play Chicago again. They put belt to
- 13:40you -know -what last time they played Chicago.
- 13:43They put up, I think, over 50 points on them.
- 13:46I look at Chicago's schedule. They play the Browns,
- 13:49which you would think, okay, that should be a
- 13:51win. But that defense is really good. Maybe Garrett
- 13:55gets his record again that game. He could. So
- 13:58you have the Browns. You have the Packers. I
- 14:00think it's the Niners. And then I think they
- 14:02end with the Lions. So it's a really tough schedule
- 14:06when you think about those four games. And I
- 14:08think about... What the Packers did on Sunday,
- 14:11if you slow down that run and can slow it down,
- 14:14you can slow down that offense. You just can't
- 14:17let them back in like Green Bay did towards the
- 14:19end of that game. Start playing perfect defense.
- 14:23That's a tough one. I would actually flip Chicago
- 14:26and Detroit. Okay, and then Panthers are the
- 14:28other scenario. I'm feeling like, I don't know.
- 14:30They're frisky. Well, I think whoever the Tampa
- 14:33Bay or them is going to get that position. I
- 14:35don't know if the Panthers. They're two games
- 14:37behind. They're tied, aren't they? It's 7 -6
- 14:40and 7 -6, right? They are, yeah. And then the
- 14:43Cowboys, 6 -6, who play the Vikings this week
- 14:46that we'll talk about here in the next episode,
- 14:48still has a chance. That's going to be a tough
- 14:53one. Yeah, it'll be interesting. It's going to
- 14:55be a tough road. Eliminated are the Falcons,
- 14:57Cardinals, Saints, Commanders, and Giants. So
- 15:01that's kind of where we're looking at there.
- 15:05I want to transition to the MVP conversation.
- 15:11Sitting right there, Drake Main was not on my
- 15:15bingo card at the beginning of the year is MVP
- 15:19conversation. Favorite at minus 120, according
- 15:23to whatever AI generated chart that is. Stafford
- 15:29coming in second. I mean, I would still put Stafford
- 15:33over May, personally. I would, too. Law of Allen
- 15:36and Prescott to finish off. What else would you
- 15:40change in that? Or do you feel that's pretty
- 15:42accurate where you'd put them currently? I want
- 15:47to see more variety in there and not just quarterbacks.
- 15:49I know it's a quarterback award. We always talk
- 15:51about it. Who's the running back then that probably
- 15:53deserves that position? I would have said up
- 15:54until the last few weeks, Jonathan Taylor. Okay.
- 15:57Or maybe even Jameer Gibbs with just some, like,
- 15:59again, I know he's had a couple games that have
- 16:02probably knocked him out. McCaffrey's had a huge,
- 16:05huge season. I mean, he leads the NFL, I think,
- 16:07in scrimmage yards. Or I think one guy we were
- 16:09just talking about. Maybe Gibbs might have him.
- 16:10Miles Garrett should probably be in that conversation
- 16:13as MVP. Yep. So, yeah. non -quarterback MVP odds
- 16:18but no this is this is great you know I think
- 16:21May's slightly ahead because You look at what
- 16:24that team was last year, what everyone thought
- 16:26it was going to be. The Rams were in the playoffs
- 16:27last year, took it to the Eagles, had a chance
- 16:30to go to the NFC title game. So I think some
- 16:31of that probably plays into it a little bit.
- 16:34And it's new. Everybody loves something when
- 16:37it's new. For sure. If you haven't been up there
- 16:39before, you naturally gain a little position.
- 16:41I'm going Stafford definitely for sure. I think
- 16:44he's got to have it. He's having his career year.
- 16:48And if they get the one seed, I know that even
- 16:52if they make it, gets the one seed i'd still
- 16:54take stafford over there yeah um love i he had
- 16:58a really bad interception didn't he this last
- 17:00week i don't know if that was the cold air or
- 17:03what that was like the play gate or something
- 17:05i would love to i think he's gonna get one at
- 17:08one point i just i don't think it's this year
- 17:10i don't i think with how well stafford's playing
- 17:12i think what's gonna do it is one like you said
- 17:15if they lock up the one seed If you want to look
- 17:18at it from a stat standpoint, he has 35 touchdowns.
- 17:21The next person tied for second is Jared Goff
- 17:24and Dak Prescott at 26. This guy has nine more
- 17:27touchdowns than the next man up. A 40 -year -old.
- 17:32You look at him. I know. You look at him. It's
- 17:37got to be him. Everything he is doing, the age
- 17:40he is, he's won a Super Bowl. If he gets MVP
- 17:43and if they get into the Super Bowl, even if
- 17:45they don't win it, they get into the Super Bowl,
- 17:47you have to have conversations about the legacy
- 17:50of Matt Stafford and what everyone has thought
- 17:52it had been years prior. It's a completely different
- 17:56conversation with what he's doing this year.
- 17:58And I totally agree. We had a conversation in
- 18:00preseason, just in fantasy, I thought, because
- 18:03his back was really bad. And you're like, oh.
- 18:06What are we going to get out of them? Well, obviously,
- 18:09a lot. MVP level. More people need back problems,
- 18:12I guess. This guy's going to put his cowboy hat
- 18:14on real shortly and right after the sunset as
- 18:16the MVP of 2025 in my book. So he continues.
- 18:19So that'll finish up here the news and conversations.
- 18:24So we got one more episode here of week 15 previews
- 18:28of our five games. Tune in to that here shortly.
