Weekly Dose of Fat, show number 98 for Friday, March 18th, 2016.
• 0:07
  [upbeat music] Welcome, peeps.
• 0:19
It's Sven and I in the studio while our erstwhile co-host Nomez is down Missouri-wa getting him some Old Bar. Old Bar. We haven't talked to Old Bear for a while. I, I'm hoping those guys call in a little bit later.
• 0:31
They best. And, uh, and that, folks, over there is Mr. JK Living. Ahoy. Our show is brought to you by Surly Bikes. Bikes, parts, chaos. Learn more at surlybikes.com. Chaos. I need some of that, um, the, the, uh,
• 0:49
you know, like, the opposite of helium. Like, [high-pitched voice] "Yeah, your voice doesn't go up in here." Uh-huh. He goes, [deep voice] "Uh, bikes, parts, chaos." Like, like alum or something? Yeah, yeah.
• 0:59
Well, it's got, like, a, some myth busters, like, 15-syllable word or something. Yeah. I like that. You don't even need it. You did that really well.
• 1:07
[laughs] So is it already that time when I ask, uh, what's on the show this week? Yep. And you're gonna read it? I'm gonna read it.
• 1:14
I don't know if [laughs] we, if this is even stuff that's on the show this week, but, uh, tell us what's happening. Well, we start the show with the event of the week.
• 1:22
We check in with the Fatty Farm field report, brought to you by Quiring Cycles. We have Men's on the Street interview with Nomez and Old Bear. We'll talk about our spring shearing contest. Hmm. Still fence on that one.
• 1:41
Yeah. [laughs] You'll see, you'll see. I'm, I'm just getting onto the thing. Well, it is what it is. You know? Yeah.
• 1:46
[grumbles] So, uh, you know, we've spent all winter, uh, you know, kinda helping other people out with their events, and kinda time to help out, uh, oldfatbike.com, I think.
• 1:57
Coming into the summer, you know, events are waning a little bit on the winter scene. I don't think we've really gotten into the beach racing season yet.
• 2:03
So let's just go ahead and, uh, pimp our 100th show party we're having here in Milwaukee. Party! Party! That's coming up on April 1st. And, no, it's not an April Fools' joke.
• 2:15
[laughs] We actually have an event space and a band, Mr. Chris Daisy from down there at, uh, Zion Cyclery- Smooth Evil... and Smooth Evil are coming up.
• 2:24
And, uh, we've got Sav, I think, is confirmed from Surly- Yeah, yeah. That was-... who, by the way, is 6'4" of fun right there, that guy.
• 2:31
Yeah, I thought he was calling, and then I actually read the words, and then- Yeah... it seemed like he was coming. Yeah. He'll be- [laughs] So we, we, we may get some video.
• 2:39
Um, you know, so the century mark, I think it's kind of a big deal, plus, uh, you know, we're gonna be going into the summer season with a little bit more relaxed schedule of events for the Fat Bike Radio drama chat hour.
• 2:53
And, uh, uh, we're gonna go out with a bang on the, on the 100th. There. On the big old teleplay. April 1st. Not a joke. Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Not a joke. East Side,
• 3:06
where the people play, and then they have some fun and stuff. And then, well, n- and then, it, well, no, there's a puzzle, too, because it's, like, the number of one street and then the number- Oh, for crying out loud...
• 3:20
the name of the other street. We still don't have the stupid address right, but it's at least- Right. [laughs]... the right building, so it's fine. You know, you'll show up.
• 3:26
You'll know where to go because there'll be a garage door open and music pounding out of it, and it's gonna be pretty evident where we're bashing because, by cracky, we do it Milwaukee-style.
• 3:36
[upbeat music] [singing] Top of the hill. This... Yeah. I saw the fridge was full of, uh, some- I didn't see that [laughs] I had a, I had a bad angle. I didn't see. A few leftover, um, hebers there from, uh,
• 3:51
uh, the open house party here not too long ago. So, oh, I got the last, uh, Grenade. Coors, Coors Banquet Grenade. Coors. I'm still working on the Pabst, or it, I, it, it, I need my beer water. [laughs] Yep.
• 4:07
I can, I can have some beer water. No worries about that. I need more beer. Well, I, I need- More beer water... I need more beer. Yeah.
• 4:16
I, I'm thinking in the future, which was actually, would be in the past when people are hearing it, so- From, from, from far outside the galaxy, many, many miles away,
• 4:27
we got us a caller on the line from down Missouri way. Uh-oh. Welcome to the show. Please tell me your name, sir. Hi. [laughs] It's, uh, it's our pal Gomez there calling in from- Hello...
• 4:43
from, well, you're not in Lake Geneva now, are you? Where the hell are you? [laughs] Mi nombre es Gomez Alejandro Fontana Del Lago. Well- And mi amigo is the Old Bear. Old Bear, back on, back on the show.
• 4:56
Here comes Old Bear, begging for a landing. [laughs] Wee. So, so- Howdy. Howdy up there, Sven. Hey, Old Bear. Where, where are you guys broadcasting from on this fine spring evening? Should we say what we were gonna say?
• 5:15
Uh, we are here, uh, uh, broadcasting live- It, it's not go, it's not go take a flying leap there, Sven, is it? [laughs] We are, we are broadcasting live from the rather hellethon rehab suite. Yeah.
• 5:28
It's totally sweet, too. It's nice here. Sweet suites. I got my own rocking chair by the creek, and I can go trout fishing anytime. They got good trout down that way? Nice. Mm-hmm. Trout the size of my feet, Sven.
• 5:45
You know what? When, uh, when Gomez called me earlier this week and said, "I'm going to Missouri," I'm like, "You're just funning with me, 'cause you do that all the time." Well, guess what?
• 5:53
He weren't funning with me- [laughs]... 'cause he's down in Missouri right now. Yeah. I called you, and you said, "Man, I can't go." I was like, "Hmm, that doesn't mean I can't go." [laughs] Right?
• 6:05
So, so does that stop me? No. Yesterday it was a balmy 83 degrees here What? Holy macaroni. Yep. It was pretty nice. And, uh, today it was 65, a little cooler.
• 6:21
Old Bear and I went to Lyons Park for a little bit- Lyons Club... Lyons Club Park. And, uh- Did you dress appropriately? I got the, uh, this bike Rybak. I'm riding the, uh, Trek Farley 9.8 on the Richter scale,
• 6:38
and, uh, it's treating me very well. I'm, I'm abusing it and leaving it muddy and getting it muddy. It likes that, baby. Nice ride. Oh, yeah? Real nice. Old Bear rode it today.
• 6:52
Compared, compared to Rybak, Rybak's a Jeep, and the Trek is a Rolls-Royce. On the road. Wow. Rolls-Royce engineered. So, uh, that, that, l- [laughs]...
• 7:04
that, uh, that, that Lions Den Club Creek Park there, that's, uh, that's Old Bear's home turf, right? Yep. Right. So we, uh, we rode a bit, and then we had, uh, we had some food,
• 7:19
and, uh, then the nurses came and poured 7 Up all over the stage. [laughs] Red Bear and I- Slick track... put on white, uh, full leather, leather, uh, pants- Boots... and matching platform shoes, and we're ready to rock,
• 7:38
basically. See? See what I missed out on? [laughs] Man, I feel, I feel like, uh, I, I need to, uh, I don't know, maybe make a, a different covenant with the old wife there about how I can just leave whenever I want.
• 7:52
[laughs] Well, like I tell all my friends, if you'd like me to talk to the wife for you, I have a way with people. [laughs] Hey, true that. You drive a hard bargain there, friend. Oh, yeah.
• 8:08
No, you know, it's, it's, it's still, uh, it's still, um, school season for the, uh, the youth, and, uh, it just, it's tough to get away, or I, I might come home to, well, more freedom than I actually want right now.
• 8:22
[laughs] Freedom is good, but, uh, uh, yeah. I still like those people for some reason. Well, it's probably bordering on love. Yeah, I'm gonna sneak up on love real quick. Yes. Right on.
• 8:40
Yesterday I rode, I rode Council Bluffs Lake, and tomorrow I can ride a new trail out of, what's the- Uh, it's out of St. James. It's the Forest City Mountain Bike Trails...
• 8:54
either ride in there, or I'm gonna ride my old friend the Baron in, uh, and then I'm gonna drive back. But literally, Sven, I, I left the house at, like, 5:00 PM on a seven-hour [laughs] drive on Monday.
• 9:09
So I didn't get here until, uh, after 1:00 in the morning on Tuesday. Wow. But, uh, it was totally worth it. I, I, I... When I was out on the trail and it was...
• 9:21
And the trails are just so nice, rocky and twisty and up and down and beautiful views of the lake. I was like, "Yep, that was worth it." Yep, and peo- Totally cool...
• 9:33
people wonder why we work for tens of dollars a week, and, and now they know. [laughs] Exactly. I was like, "This is worth my $10 this week." Absolutely. I only had to spend, you know, $50 worth of gas to get there.
• 9:49
Pretty good. Pretty good deal. Right on. What's going on up there in, in, uh, in Hollywood? Well, we, uh, did a little more, um, you know, pre-planning for the 100th.
• 10:00
We've been talking about that a little bit, the, the 100th show party we're doing. I understand that Sav is a confirmed attendee. Yeah, Sav is going to bring his megaphone and- And what about his banjo?
• 10:13
More importantly, he needs a banjo. [laughs] Hey, no banjo jokes. I'm in the place that isn't the Ozarks. Uh-oh. It's worse in the Ozarks. [laughs] Uh-oh. The crowd here just got a...
• 10:28
[laughs] You have a way with people, though. [laughs] Yeah, look at our relationship, JK. I mean... [laughs] You guys gotta set it up so I can call in and listen to that 100th show somehow. Yeah.
• 10:46
Uh, worse, the, the... We're still working out the technical details. Actually recording the show isn't the big deal.
• 10:52
Getting the call-in, uh, getting the call-in guest, that's a little bit more of a challenge because the phone line doesn't easily transfer over to, uh, a different location- Oh...
• 11:01
'cause we're actually gonna have it in a, a, a different, uh, building than we're normally in. But, uh, I don't know. Maybe we'll figure it out. Okay.
• 11:09
I could call forward or some- There's some technology that can make this work.
• 11:13
So- Sometimes, sometimes when I call in when you guys aren't taking [laughs] call-in guests, I just listen because sometimes my phone doesn't play right. I don't have a computer right now. Gotcha.
• 11:27
Uh, he listens to the show and it stops, and then the whole rotation of Earth stops, and then it starts again, and then the rotation of the Earth starts again. I think that's what's causing global warming.
• 11:41
Well, I'm all for it, as long as it e- Yeah, but- As long as it evaporates...
• 11:45
You know, they, they've got this thing where, uh, certain, certain cities around the Great Lakes are trying to take water where, you know, the compact won't let them.
• 11:52
If they could just drop the lake level three feet, I don't think that's gonna affect a lot, except we get a lot more shoreline to ride. Yeah. And global warming too. So have you been out riding the beach?
• 12:03
Uh, well, we went out riding the bars, uh, on, uh, uh, Dave's bike's birthday on Saturday. [laughs] Oh, yeah. Timberline. It's St., it's St. Patrick- Oh, dear... or St. Practice Day. St.
• 12:15
Practice Day, 'cause, uh, we didn't know if, uh, Dave would have to work on, uh, s- the actual St. Paddy's Day. But yeah, we did a, uh, we did a pretty extensive, uh, urban ride on Saturday.
• 12:26
Yeah, I got into a, got into one parade-ish kind of- Mm-hmm. Did you do a pirouette off the bike too? Well, yeah, in front of a couple cops. A, a nice, uh, studded skid [laughs] Right.
• 12:37
Yeah, 'cause it's like, you know, 60 degrees or whatever it was- Yeah... and, and JK's still riding studs on, [laughs] on his bike, so they don't grip the pavement like you'd expect.
• 12:46
No, they don't, and I skidded into Lunz, and I freaked, and I hit my darn front brake, and over the bars. Whee-hee. Sorry. Apparently it was a thing of beauty that- [laughs]... even Lunz wanted...
• 12:59
He's like, "If I could have captured that on-" As they usually are. [laughs] Well, it's a, it's a public- Obviously you guys are talking all Southern now. Well, this is- Why you talking Southern? We're Chicago boys.
• 13:10
[laughs] Only kind of Southern where they're at. All right. This is just a- Yeah... this is a public service announcement.
• 13:16
For all you people out there with studded tires, you should probably think about swapping those out for some real rubber. And he's looking directly at me, huh? [laughs] Yes.
• 13:27
Oh, wait, this is a r- this is a, a, a retroactive- [laughs]... public service announcement. With guitar. Yeah, I think the studded tires are in the rear view mirror for- [laughs]... uh, for the Midwest anyway.
• 13:37
Yep, they're still riding snow up in Alaska, though. Did you see that, uh, Tim Burnson won the, uh, won the Talkeetna Trio? Oh, well- Nice... after, after winning the ITI he was in pretty good form apparently.
• 13:53
Yeah, it's the year of Tim. And by cracky, was he not a good guest last week? I know. Are you saying, what are you trying to say, we're not good guests? We're not good... Come on. Uh, you- We can. Don't be so tough.
• 14:06
We're doing, we're doing the best we can, man. We're using a, we're using a Burger King cup as a mic stand. [laughs] We're t- we're talking to the can.
• 14:15
Are you we- uh, are you wearing the crowns, the paper crowns that they give you? What I'm wearing is none of your business. Well, I'm just curious. Just saying. Come on. What are you wearing?
• 14:26
Dude, all right, say it really softly. I'm wearing tacky. Oh. [laughs] I have stretchy pants on, and I have PD Dominators on my feet. How about that? You like that? You flavor it. Well, I'll just... Yeah.
• 14:39
Yeah, I still have stretchy pants on. [laughs] And I still have, have clipless pedal shoes on. You still have those on? I still have them on. They feel like slippers.
• 14:48
I can't wear, I can't wear, I can't wear clipless shoes or pedals on a fat bike. It just makes me feel silly. [laughs] Well, sometimes, Sven, you just gotta- Feel silly...
• 15:00
drive all night to get to the Ozarks, or a place that you think is the Ozarks but really ain't the Ozarks, and ride SPDs 'cause you think you're a racing boy. Spuds. I know. I like my spuds, bud.
• 15:17
[laughs] All right, so, uh, you're coming back when? Tomorrow, next day? When, when are you coming back to the old, uh, Milwaukee? Well, Sven, I, I think I'm leaving tomorrow.
• 15:28
After I go, I'm gonna go for a ride, and then I'm gonna drive back to the homestead tomorrow. But then there's talk of a, uh, lettuce trail weekend with, uh, that Livewire Adam Blake and the lovely Kelsey Walsh.
• 15:46
Well, that, that would be fun. [laughs] So I might go up there. It sounds fun. Let us know. We must pry into the Gomez's, uh, social circle. Yep. All right, guys. Well- How about you? Me? I don't know.
• 16:03
When are you returning to Milwaukee? [laughs] Well- Oh, there's a river trail ride, uh- Oh, yeah... Saturday m- morning-ish. At, [laughs] at 7:00 in the morning.
• 16:11
7:00 in the morning, so that's- Well before I would be up, but- That, that's a really... [phone rings] Oh, my.
• 16:19
[laughs] Hey, aren't you, aren't you having some sort of, like, garage sale and ride there, uh, out at the Nut Factory for Schlick Cycles?
• 16:26
Yeah, those guys over there across the hall are having some kind of a, you know, clean out the boxes, 'cause there's a bunch of parts and stuff that have been gathering dust and, and some other good stuff too.
• 16:37
So yeah, from 9:00 to noon on Saturday is a Schlick Cycles garage sale. But before that, Jim's leading a, a river trail ride out there on the old, uh, uh, test track right around the, right around the corner from here.
• 16:53
Well, it's pretty the wind will die down by then. Well, the- Yeah, there's- It, it's not- Oh, I got knocked around like all hell- [laughs]... like a fucking piñata today, man. It's, was 50 plus at some times today.
• 17:04
Well, yeah. It was, it was maximum. 50 degrees and 50 mile an hours.
• 17:08
[laughs] Yeah, down on the river though- [laughs] Down on the river you don't notice it as much, 'cause it's really kind of, uh, you know, below the bluff height. Mm-hmm.
• 17:15
So you really don't notice the wind as much down there. No. Unless one of the trees decides to, to throw its branches at you. No, I was on my bike commute, and that's when I got knocked around. Boom. Tappy, tappy, tappy.
• 17:29
You ride on. Well, you guys, you guys sound like you're having one heck of a time. So you... I don't consider this as, like, spring break so much as you should consider this a vacation from smelling Gomez.
• 17:43
We, we turned your mic off. You don't smell half bad. [laughs] Think of it that way. Very good. Think of it, think of it on the bright side. Always look at the bright side of life. You play your, you,
• 17:57
you play your cards right and- And? But then I g- I got a surprise for the 100th show. [laughs] What is it? The missing verbs that you [laughs]
• 18:15
waited to hear? The missing, the missing perf? There's a perf missing? Verbs. Verb. Ferb. Words. Words. [laughs] Ferbs? You went like, "I have the most devilish thing, and it will be-"
• 18:36
Exactly But I have a great idea. [laughs] That's gonna drive me nuts. I was an English major. Put a verb in it. A- No verbs. [laughs] Yeah. All right, well- Thanks for checking in...
• 18:52
any, any other probing questions for us? 'Cause- Uh, not unless you got something, uh, hidden down in your pocket that you want to, uh, to clue us into. No, you know, you know, we've been riding bikes. Route 66 Hood.
• 19:04
Oh, we, we, we stopped by and saw Dan at Route 66 Bikes. He built the trails that, uh, that I might ride tomorrow. Oh, right on. And, uh- Always good to pimp the local shop, you know? He's got two close buddies.
• 19:18
We like fat bike-friendly shops He's, he's not that friendly. [laughs] But is he fat-friendly? But, uh- Or fat-curious? He did have a fat beer- Chubby, a chubby chaser [laughs]...
• 19:34
Farley in there and he had a couple of Stashes. Oh, yeah, down there. What do you think? So you've been riding the trails down there.
• 19:40
What do you think of fat bike versus plus bike on, you know, the trails you've been hitting down there, uh, in Missouri? I think the fat bike that I'm riding is at that level where it's an anything mountain bike.
• 19:57
I think that a suspension fork might be a good idea down here. I was actually thinking while I was out on those trails, it's like, "Hmm, man, that Cannondale with the Lefty on it would be the shizzle for this trail."
• 20:13
[laughs] But the, the, the Trek was handling it really well. That Trek is 24 pounds, 13 ounces. Wow. So...
• 20:22
And, and I'm running it with the, with the 3.8 inch Hodags with the 27.5 inch rims, so it's a really unique creature, this, this Chuck Q. Farley, Dr. Chuck Q. Farley from Trek. Mm-hmm. Um, it's, uh,
• 20:40
it's, uh, it, it, it totally kicked my butt to ride yesterday and was just right, just the right amount where it was like, "Ah, I see the car. Yes, good stuff." [laughs] You really should've come. True that.
• 20:56
But, you know, there's always, there's always next weekend. That's... There's weekends every week of the year, oddly enough. I don't know. All right. So- I don't know, I don't know what you just said.
• 21:08
What did you just say? Uh, what'd he say? I said, uh, hey- The audio's here. The audio's here at the roller rink. It's going, going crazy. I just pulled a triple Lindy. [laughs] Oh, we didn't tell you?
• 21:22
We're roller skating the whole time that we're doing this. I'm going for the grapevine now. Oh, let's do The Hustle. Do, do, do, do-do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do. And it's time for a break here at Fat Bike Radio.
• 21:39
[laughs] Hey, guys. Thanks very much for calling. I'm glad you're having a good time down there. Uh, check in again next week when we can continue with the adventures of Gomez and Old Bear. Uh- [laughs] Until then,
• 21:56
I bid you fellows- Bye-bye... adieu. Bye-bye, fatbike.com. Bye-bye. You rule. I, I can't wait till Gomez is back on the show. Yeah, us either. Me neither. I mean, it's so much more fun when he's here.
• 22:07
Oh, that's you saying that. Never mind. [laughs] All right, we're taking a break. Later, dude. Bye. Thanks for calling in. See ya. Bye. Bye. And, uh, apparently we'll be back right after this.
• 22:23
[upbeat music] So I heard you need a fat bike. Come to Zion Cyclery in Zion, Illinois. We have all brands: Trek, Borealis, Salsa, Felt, Surly, and more. Yo, we have all the cold weather gears by 45NRTH and Bund Trigger.
• 22:41
Keep those fingers and toes nice and toasty. We fix bikes also. So you have any problem, brakes, gears, suspension, we have the best mechanics in town. So yeah, visit us at zioncyclery.com.
• 23:02
Hi, this is Eric from Surly. Beanbag chairs, lava lamps, pintos. Those things and more on Fat Bike Radio with Gomez and Sten. Hey, people, we're back. [whistles] Wake up.
• 23:19
[laughs] You know, last week we had a question of the week, and, uh, it was if there was a beach race in your area, what format would you like?
• 23:28
I know it kind of discussed it last week a little bit, but, uh, what were those, uh- Some of the choices would be, uh, short course, MTBE, beach crit, team enduro, or fat bike beach steeple chase. Uh-huh.
• 23:40
Always Gomez with the out of the left field idea.
• 23:45
I, I was thinking about how, uh, having a beach race is obviously is a way to extend the fat bike season, 'cause people still don't think of fat bikes as all-season bikes and, you know, there was a, there was even a, an article, uh, it, it's later in the, the, the, uh, the links, which I don't know if we'll actually get into all the links, but it's like there's this new thing called fat biking in Vermont.
• 24:06
It's like we- Oh... really? Yeah... a new thing again? Yeah. I, I ran into one on some on other thing and it was like the hottest, newest sport, uh, for the winter. Drone ra- And I'm like-... drone racing...
• 24:19
I'm like, "No, it's not the hottest, newest. It's..." [laughs] But, you know- Yeah. Uh-huh...
• 24:24
I mean, obviously we're, we're big proponents of fat bikes all year round, and this, this idea of getting beach racing going, uh, y- you know, as much as snow bike racing is going in the winter, I think there's a real swell of beach bike racing interest.
• 24:38
And, um, so, you know, we're, we're thinking about... I, I think about it being kind of like- Something that's, um, friendly for more than just the racers. Yeah. Like, get some people involved in this, have some fun.
• 24:51
You don't need 100 miles of shoreline. You need a mile to make something interesting and competitive for the racers, and interesting for the spectators. So, you know, I- For even the- And I-...
• 25:05
the participants that aren't racing to, in it to win it. Right. Exactly. To, to do the course Which is like, you know, 90% of the people usually- Yeah, yeah... at, at any given event.
• 25:14
And all of these have merit, for sure. I think, you know, obviously the steeplechase has, you know, the element of getting wet or moist. Moist. [laughs] Maybe moist.
• 25:23
[laughs] Um, the team enduro thing has, you know, the, the, the multi-hour party, get your team out there atmosphere.
• 25:32
Um, you know, for maybe the more competitive people, the crit, you know, that's like, "Hey, let's just go as fast as we can around in circle." Kind of like NASCAR, sort of. Dizzy.
• 25:41
And the short course MTB idea, I think that is like, when we do Shell Track up there in, uh, Manitowoc, that seems like that could be a winter or summer course.
• 25:52
'Cause you have beach, you got stairs, you got, uh, some single track, and that is a m- a mile plus about length course, and that is a really cool thing. So that's kinda what I think. I think we should do them all.
• 26:06
