Latest / Mini Scroll / The Anatomy of a Stan Twitter Account: Interview with TrishCrave
Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to a special episode of Mini Scroll.
- 0:04Instead of bringing you the biggest stories on the Internet,
- 0:07today I am bringing you an interview.
- 0:10This is someone who is so entrenched in pop culture and
- 0:13Internet culture that he launched his own Stan Twitter
- 0:18account earlier this year for the one and only Trisha Paytas.
- 0:23You may have heard of this account.
- 0:25It's called Trish Crave. He reached out, asked if there
- 0:28was any way he could come on the podcast, talk about his love of
- 0:32Trisha being entrenched in Stan culture.
- 0:35And of course, I had to say yes, he did want to stay anonymous.
- 0:40So if you guys are watching on Spotify or on YouTube, you will
- 0:44see a fun little edit that I have done to keep his face
- 0:47anonymous. But I had such a good time
- 0:49speaking with Aiden. I don't think we've ever
- 0:52interviewed a Stan in particular.
- 0:55We've done lots of episodes on fandom culture, Stan culture,
- 1:00toxic standom, but we've never actually spoken to someone who
- 1:04is running like a NEWS UPDATE Stan account like this for a
- 1:08particular celebrity before. So without further ado, I hope
- 1:12you guys enjoy this episode. So excited to be chatting with
- 1:17Trish Crave today you guys. This is maybe one of our most
- 1:21iconic interviews that we've ever done.
- 1:24You guys know I am a long time Trisha Paytas apologist.
- 1:27It's just in my blood. I can't help it and I feel like
- 1:32I am sitting here today with someone who could probably say
- 1:35that he feels the same. So welcome to infinite scroll,
- 1:39Aiden. Hello, thank you for having me.
- 1:41So before we kind of get into all things Trish, can you tell
- 1:46us how you came across the pod and why you wanted to come chat
- 1:50with me today? So a lot of people in my account
- 1:53are so passionate, like they'll send me clips as soon as they
- 1:56see stuff. Like as soon as something gets
- 1:58posted or something they'll send it straight to me.
- 2:00So I'm always checking my DM's and someone sent me Adm and
- 2:03they're like hey, this podcast talked about you.
- 2:06They mentioned you and I was like oh that's crazy because you
- 2:09know, I've now I'm not used to this kind of stuff.
- 2:10So I was like, oh, let me check this out.
- 2:12So I watched the episode and you were so, so sweet.
- 2:15And you even talked about the account for good like 5 minutes,
- 2:18which I was already I was so surprised.
- 2:20I was like, oh this is crazy. It was at like 800 followers
- 2:23when you talked about it. So it was a super, super small
- 2:26account and I was like, this is crazy.
- 2:28So I wanted to contact you and just be like, Oh well, I seen
- 2:31it. Oh, thank you.
- 2:33Speaking of the account and how it's grown, can you tell me
- 2:36about yourself and how you got into pop culture?
- 2:39And then we'll chat a little bit about the account and how you've
- 2:42grown that. I am NPR, which is, you know,
- 2:45pretty close to the pop culture world.
- 2:47And I remember even being super, super young, I just loved pop
- 2:51culture. Just, you know, pop stars,
- 2:53everything about that. I feel like the first album I
- 2:56ever listened to was The Fame by Lady Gaga, which, you know, is
- 3:00all about this. Feel like it's so Gen.
- 3:01Z of, you know, people to say I want to be famous.
- 3:05It's like all about that. So I feel like I just, ever
- 3:07since I was little, I just loved pop culture.
- 3:10Yeah fair enough. Me too.
- 3:11I literally had a bedroom covered in posters.
- 3:15I'm a millennial, so it was posters back then.
- 3:17I feel like you guys probably had like Tumblr boards, but we
- 3:20had like a physical magazines that we had all like RIP the
- 3:23pages out and just all over my bedroom.
- 3:25Just celebrities everywhere. I've just always been so
- 3:28obsessed with pop culture. I completely get it.
- 3:30So tell me about your journey as a Tricia Paytas Stan.
- 3:35When did you first get into the Tricia lore?
- 3:38OK, so I feel like I was the first generation of these iPad
- 3:42babies. I remember getting YouTube
- 3:44super, super young and Trisha was actually one of the first
- 3:47people I saw on there with like Shane, Joey, you know, all the
- 3:51OG Youtubers back in the day. And I feel like I've always just
- 3:54connected with her. I always thought she was so
- 3:56funny and so real. I feel like nowadays people
- 4:00always like to put up like a persona online and she's always
- 4:03been real. Like, no editing the videos.
- 4:06A video could be an hour long and she's literally just sitting
- 4:09there just staring at the camera.
- 4:10I just always thought it was so real.
- 4:12And yeah, it was inspiring to see her growth even now.
- 4:15Yeah, I completely agree. I obviously, like I said, I have
- 4:18been such a long time Trisha watcher and it's hard sometimes
- 4:23because she's gone through an evolution and there have been
- 4:25years where it's been really hard to be someone that has
- 4:29followed her. And, you know, you want to
- 4:31support her, but it's hard to support her in those moments.
- 4:34But I completely agree. She's someone where you're
- 4:36watching her content. And what I find so fascinating
- 4:39about her is that you can never tell if she is performing or if
- 4:45this is actually her. And I think that's one of the
- 4:49most interesting things about her entire online persona is,
- 4:53you know, she feels so real on one hand, but she also feels
- 4:56like this complete caricature where you're like, she could
- 4:58just be trolling us this whole time and you would have no idea.
- 5:01On that note, do you have, I assume you follow the podcast
- 5:05very closely, just Trish? Yes.
- 5:07So do you have a favorite episode or do you have a
- 5:10favorite like Trisha Paytas moment in general?
- 5:13Oh. OK, actually this is going to be
- 5:15a super basic answer, but you know, I love the classics.
- 5:18So like the I love you Jesus, I love you Jesus.
- 5:25It's like I'm gonna bat for that song forever.
- 5:27A lot of people like to joke about it, but I'm like, it's a
- 5:29good song. It's actually a really good
- 5:31song. It's a both I love bet on it.
- 5:35Have you seen that video? The recreation from High School
- 5:37Musical? Of course I have seen it.
- 5:39Aiden bet on it. Bet on it.
- 5:44Bet on it. Like, yeah, it's perfect.
- 5:46It's one of my favorites. I love like in terms of her
- 5:50eras, I love her, you know, beach house Trish era.
- 5:54That's where I discovered her. So I will always have that like
- 5:57in my heart. And then of course, I loved I I
- 6:00know that this when she was in her deepest turmoil.
- 6:03So I don't love this for her, but I loved for her audience.
- 6:06For me, the crying on the kitchen floor content, Like
- 6:09nothing hits like that because it's exactly what you were
- 6:11saying watching her have these breakdowns and just stream of
- 6:14consciousness saying things that everybody feels but would never
- 6:18like. So many people would never say
- 6:20that stuff out loud and admit that those kinds of things about
- 6:23themselves, that content just hits.
- 6:25It does. It actually goes perfect with
- 6:27like the TikTok edits. I don't know if you're on like
- 6:29the edit Trisha TikTok, but there's always the all those sad
- 6:33edits where it leads to her like getting married with Moses and
- 6:35the kids. And I was like, this is like
- 6:37truly inspiring because it's like we followed her on this
- 6:40whole journey. Absolutely.
- 6:41She's lived her entire adult lifeout on online, right?
- 6:44Like she started her channel. I think she was 18.
- 6:46So it's yeah, it's been a wild journey.
- 6:49OK, let's talk about Stan Twitter.
- 6:52So you have this Twitter account obviously called Trish Crave.
- 6:56So first of all, have you been noticed by Trisha and Oscar?
- 7:01Yes, I've actually been mentioned on the podcast a few
- 7:04times and every single time it's surreal.
- 7:07I always just I'm like, wait, this is like crazy.
- 7:09They've always been so, so sweet.
- 7:11There was actually one time where they mentioned me where
- 7:13Trisha kind of dragged me. And I thought it was so, so
- 7:15funny because Oscar, you know how they talk about like
- 7:18headlines on there, like hot topics.
- 7:20So they were talking about Pop grave and she's like, well, did
- 7:22pop grave tweet that or was that church grave?
- 7:25And I just thought it was so funny.
- 7:26And I'm actually, and I wouldn't say close relation with Oscar,
- 7:31but you know, we've exchanged a good amount of DMS and I like to
- 7:34think we're pretty close. Oh, I love that.
- 7:37No, that's really exciting. I feel like, you know, running
- 7:40some type of like Stan or update like fan account, that's like
- 7:44the goal, right, is to be noticed by your fave.
- 7:47So that's really exciting that it happened so quickly for you.
- 7:50How long have you been on Twitter and have you always been
- 7:53part of Stan Twitter? So I've actually been on Twitter
- 7:56for good maybe 2-3 years and I've been focusing on this
- 8:01Trishgrave account for like maybe the last.
- 8:04It's relatively new. So it's like maybe four months.
- 8:07And but I've had other accounts, you know, just like spying, but
- 8:09I've actually been on different like sides of Stan's Twitter.
- 8:12I feel like I've always been on Stan's Twitter because that's
- 8:14just like where my page leads to.
- 8:16So I feel like I started on like Swifty Twitter and then I think
- 8:19that led me to like Barb Twitter and that's where it got really
- 8:23messy, where I learned about like truly how they drag people
- 8:26on there. And then I feel like now I'm
- 8:29definitely on this Trisha site Twitter, which I've never really
- 8:32been on. So I was like, wait, this is
- 8:33actually like a fun part. It's just like good vibes.
- 8:36And it's just memes. Like everyone just gives each
- 8:38other memes. But I just love stance Twitter
- 8:40so much. Yeah, that's what I love about
- 8:43your account is, and I'm sure I said this when we talked about
- 8:46it on the pod, but it's like, it's not too serious.
- 8:49Like, this is hilarious. Having a Twitter account with
- 8:52updates about a specific Internet celebrity, especially
- 8:55someone who is, like, outrageous, like Trish, is just
- 8:58the perfect way that Twitter needs to be used.
- 9:01OK, so can you tell me about how Trish Crave came to life?
- 9:04What motivated you to start the account?
- 9:06Oh, yeah, So I've actually never really talked about this.
- 9:09So as you know, I mean, you're also a fan of like Pop crave and
- 9:13there's actually been a couple other craves like I know of
- 9:16there's like a drag crave where they focus on like the drag
- 9:18Queens. And I knew that no one was doing
- 9:21one on like a celebrity, like a specific celebrity.
- 9:25And I was like, I mean, I love Trisha, I'm a fan of the
- 9:27podcast. I was like, let me just run
- 9:29this. I'm sure I could do it.
- 9:31And I just started it one day with, I don't even remember my
- 9:35first post. It was probably something really
- 9:37random. I had like 2 likes and I was,
- 9:39you know, when you start out a new project for the first week
- 9:42and like no one sees it. I was like, I don't know if this
- 9:45is going to work out, but you know, I just stuck to it and
- 9:47it's actually grown pretty big and it's really exciting.
- 9:50Yeah, I love that. What's your process of sourcing
- 9:54updates and how do you decide on what to post?
- 9:57Especially between like all the rumors and probably, I'm sure a
- 10:00lot of misinformation about Trish comes across your desk.
- 10:03How do you pick and choose what to post?
- 10:06So I feel like, you know, there's a lot of controversy
- 10:08surrounding Trisha. So I feel like I definitely have
- 10:11to like, pick and choose what I post.
- 10:13I could think of a recent example of Jeffrey Star's
- 10:16appearance on the podcast. I feel like that's definitely
- 10:19been a hot topic surrounding Trisha.
- 10:21And it definitely made me nervous when I first heard about
- 10:23it because, you know, you have two sides.
- 10:24So it's a moral dilemma for me because it's like, do I post it?
- 10:27And sure, this is going to get like a lot of views and a lot of
- 10:30clicks, but it's also like, you know, I don't want to get her in
- 10:32trouble on my own account. How I source stuff, It's
- 10:35usually, you know, through her personally or she does have a
- 10:38Patreon. But I did reach out to her and I
- 10:41did ask her and I was like, and I post some of this stuff and
- 10:43she messaged me back and she's like, we do like to keep that
- 10:45stuff private. And I was like, oh, OK.
- 10:47I think that's OK. So I was like, if the Queen told
- 10:50me to stop, I'll stop. Oh, my God, I can't believe that
- 10:52you were like D Ming with her. I love that.
- 10:54Good for you. That's exciting.
- 10:56Thank you. Yeah.
- 10:57I feel we feel the same. You know, having our brand is
- 11:01all about Internet culture. And it's hard because when you
- 11:05cover something, you know, you can usually tell what's going to
- 11:07get a lot of traction. But sometimes it is at the
- 11:10detriment of the creator that you're speaking about.
- 11:13So there is always that kind of like ethical dilemma that you're
- 11:16trying to weigh up, like, is it worth covering this from a
- 11:20public interest perspective and knowing that I'm going to get a
- 11:23lot of traffic from it, But then it will possibly hurt the person
- 11:27that we are talking about. So I completely get it.
- 11:29It's it's something that every single, you know, reporter
- 11:33journalist, you know, even I'm sure stand Twitter account
- 11:36faces. It's just a constant that push
- 11:39and pull, right. So how much time out of your day
- 11:42or week would you say that Trish Crave takes up now that it has
- 11:47grown so much? I'd probably say maybe a good,
- 11:50I'll say two to three hours in my day because a lot of it is
- 11:54actually getting content that could be watching the podcast,
- 11:58you know, checking her stories, keeping up with her, also
- 12:01checking my DM, seeing what people say.
- 12:03So I feel like it's a decent amount of my time.
- 12:05But so far it hasn't become too like overwhelming just because,
- 12:08you know, at the end of the day, I do support her.
- 12:11So it is just. Nice, do you make any money from
- 12:13the account? I've made a couple dollars, but
- 12:17just from like the, what's it called, like the Twitter blue
- 12:20stuff, Like it's definitely not as much as people think where
- 12:23it's like, I would think that they'd pay more, but no, yeah,
- 12:26it's just it's super small stuff.
- 12:28But I've never done it for like the money.
- 12:30So yeah. Yeah, it's like a hobby.
- 12:32It's like a passion project, for sure.
- 12:33Yeah, absolutely. Do you have any type of like
- 12:38Stan Twitter community? So for example, you know, I have
- 12:41like a little community of podcasters, pop culture,
- 12:44Internet culture podcasters that I've become familiar with over
- 12:47the last few years. And I know drama channels, I've
- 12:49interviewed a couple of those on the podcast and they, there's a
- 12:53few of them that like know each other and support each other.
- 12:55Do you have that in Stan Twitter?
- 12:58There's, there's definitely a lot of people that I'm in close
- 13:00contact with and they're just always super, super nice.
- 13:03And you know, they also think it's cool because it's like,
- 13:05like, oh, I'm messaging Trish Crave.
- 13:07I think it's just like the mystery to it that fascinates
- 13:09people. But I'm like, I'm really not
- 13:11that cool guys. Like it's really nothing
- 13:13special. Have you seen any like wild
- 13:16theories as to who Trish Crave is?
- 13:19Do people think that Trish Crave is possibly like Oscar or Trish
- 13:22herself? I've definitely got it,
- 13:24especially in the beginning, because in the beginning they
- 13:27were like, oh, Oscar, no, this is you running it because like
- 13:31no one would do this. And I was like, no, it's not
- 13:33Oscar. Or just recently, Adam McIntyre,
- 13:37he's been talking about on his podcast, he's mentioned it
- 13:39actually in his interview with Oscar, he mentioned it to him
- 13:42and he's like, do you ever get accused of running Church Crave?
- 13:45And I was like, I didn't even know these rumors were going
- 13:47around. And I saw some people commenting
- 13:49that too. And they're like, Adam made this
- 13:50up. Do you know who runs Just Oscar
- 13:53Crave? Have you been in contact with
- 13:55them? I actually do know who it is and
- 13:59I will keep it a mystery, but yeah, I am in close contact with
- 14:02them. And it's not you.
- 14:04It's not me. It's not me.
- 14:07I'm like, I'm not Church crave and Oscar crave.
- 14:09Just one. That's a full time job.
- 14:12OK. So I wanted to talk a little bit
- 14:14more about like the psychology of being a Stan or a super fan.
- 14:18There's a lot of research that indicates that being a Stan can
- 14:21be part of someone's identity, which is why Stan's go, you
- 14:26know, to bat so hard for their faves.
- 14:28When it comes to your experience.
- 14:30Would you agree with this as someone who is obviously running
- 14:33a Stan account? But I'm sure you're also
- 14:35interacting with a lot of Trish stands.
- 14:37I think there's a definitely a lot of people, well, Trisha
- 14:41talks about this like the pair of social relationships people
- 14:44have with these celebrities. And I feel like it's very
- 14:46important for people to realize like at the end of the day, I
- 14:49feel like we're falling in love with the idea of somebody and
- 14:52not necessarily them as like a person.
- 14:54So I think that definitely shocks people when they find out
- 14:57like the real version of people. And that's how I mean people get
- 15:00cancelled, you know, because you find out like the real person.
- 15:02I feel like the first thing that comes to mind is the whole
- 15:04Cynthia Arrivo. I think that's how you pronounce
- 15:07her last name from Wicked. How she talked about how she was
- 15:10uncomfortable with a lot of the memes and stuff going around on
- 15:13Twitter. And then people just made it a
- 15:14bigger joke and they're like, we can't talk about this because
- 15:17it's gonna trigger Cynthia. And I was like, come on, guys,
- 15:21it's funny until it's not like that, you know?
- 15:23And I think we just need to listen.
- 15:24Absolutely, for sure. It's good that you can have that
- 15:27perspective and you're you don't seem to like deep in it as
- 15:31someone who obviously is, you know, running a fan update
- 15:34account. Do your friends and family know
- 15:36that you are Trish Crave? I mean, not really it's it's, I
- 15:40mean, my immediate family, like my parents, sure, they know and
- 15:43my closest friends, but it's not something that like I've posted,
- 15:46like I'm sure if I post it on my Instagram story, everyone would
- 15:49be like, who is that? Yeah, it's definitely, it's not
- 15:52like private, but yeah, I mean, it is like a small circle.
- 15:55I guess. I never really thought about it.
- 15:57Yeah. So you're not like,
- 15:58intentionally keeping it a secret.
- 15:59It's just something that you haven't, like, talked about.
- 16:02So being a stand can have, you know, kind of a bad rap.
- 16:05There are a lot of examples of stands engaging in unhealthy or
- 16:09entitled behavior in the pursuit of being noticed by their fave.
- 16:13How do you personally respond to this criticism?
- 16:16And it is being noticed by Trisha, which obviously has
- 16:19happened for you now, is that your primary goal with the
- 16:23account? I think for the first part of
- 16:25the question, I think about the stands, they just need to chill
- 16:28out, you know? I get the passion, though.
- 16:29You know, you want to be noticed by your favorite person so bad.
- 16:32And with social media, you have that platform, you know, you
- 16:34could be any person. No one knows where you are
- 16:37behind that avatar. And it's like you're going to
- 16:39try your hardest to get noticed by your celebrity.
- 16:41And I mean, I get it, you know? I mean, that's what my account
- 16:44is. So I definitely get it, I think.
- 16:46Yeah. Like you said, I think that was
- 16:48definitely my primary goal getting started.
- 16:50But I think now I really want to go on just Trish in some
- 16:53capacity, but I actually do have a plan.
- 16:56OK, cool. Because my next question was
- 16:57going to be like, what's the goal for the account in general?
- 17:01So the is the goal to help launch your own Internet
- 17:05personality career? Are you aspiring to have your
- 17:09own platform outside of Trisha or is this really just like for
- 17:12memes? I think it definitely, I feel
- 17:15like it's both parts of it. I definitely want to try to
- 17:17create something of my own eventually.
- 17:19But for sure now I want to focus on this.
- 17:22I think we'll start to branch off definitely when well, I
- 17:25guess I could touch on it. It kind of go along with my plan
- 17:29to get out just Trish. So let me quickly, I'll tell you
- 17:31about that. So she has this event in
- 17:33December, which is her Christmas live show, and I bought a meet
- 17:37and greet ticket and I'm really excited because I'm gonna
- 17:40actually meet her. So we're gonna get the Trisha
- 17:42Peters, Trish Crave first time they're meeting and we're gonna
- 17:44get that iconic picture. And that was gonna be my moment,
- 17:47because it's gonna be crazy because I've met a good amount
- 17:49of celebrities and it's going to be the first time where, I mean,
- 17:53they know who I am. So I'll meet Trisha and she'll
- 17:55be like, oh, like, I know who you are.
- 17:57So I'm going to pitch her my idea for the show.
- 17:59I'm going to gatekeep that. But I have a really good idea
- 18:02that I know she's going to love. Oh my God, I love this.
- 18:04You are putting your PR training to work here.
- 18:09The way you're talking about the account and kind of being
- 18:12entrenched in Stan culture in general, it is you're looking at
- 18:16it more from like an objective perspective, which I think is
- 18:20really healthy and it's super important.
- 18:22And I think that's what will get you far, which is like really
- 18:25exciting for you. The last thing that I wanted to
- 18:27ask you about is has running Trish Crave changed your
- 18:31perception of Trisha or her fandom in any way?
- 18:35It's definitely changed my perception of the fandom
- 18:38because, you know, especially growing up watching her, it
- 18:41definitely feels like it's just you, you know, especially
- 18:44telling my friends and stuff they don't really know about
- 18:46this world. Not now.
- 18:47Now definitely they know who she is.
- 18:49But I think especially with this whole community, with the church
- 18:52crib account, seeing all these other people who are just like
- 18:54me who are watching her videos and they think she's just like,
- 18:57so funny and iconic. Because I mean, yeah, you could
- 18:59see the comments on the videos. But once you see it like in a
- 19:03community space, you know it's definitely way better.
- 19:06Yeah, it like solidifies that you're not the only one and
- 19:09you're not crazy for being so into this person.
- 19:14Well, this has been so interesting to chat with you,
- 19:16Aiden. I have never spoken to anyone
- 19:18that runs a Stan account in an interview capacity like this.
- 19:22And I hope that, you know, this was a good experience for you.
- 19:25But this was so fascinating to hear that you have more of an
- 19:29end goal, you know, than just wanting to run this update
- 19:33account for the rest of your life.
- 19:35I think it's so cool and I can't wait to see where Trish Crave
- 19:38goes. Thank you, me too.
