- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle talk Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Hope that you're having a good
- 0:17day Today. We are in Psalm one O 9, and we
- 0:20are walking through Book 5 of Psalms right now.
- 0:23And Psalm one O 9 says for the choir director a Psalm of David.
- 0:28And this is a particular, clearly a unique Psalm.
- 0:31I don't know that we've gone over many of these, what are
- 0:33called imprecatory Psalms, not impregnatory, imprecatory.
- 0:39And what that means is a prayer for God's justice against some
- 0:46specific people. And these are not these Psalms.
- 0:51There's a few of them, and there's several of them that
- 0:53take place within Book 5 of Psalms.
- 0:56So there's one I know of in particular.
- 0:58It should be somewhere between like Psalm one 36137 that it's
- 1:05not that the person writing the Psalm the the psalmist or hear
- 1:10David. It's not like they just have a
- 1:12petty grudge against someone that they're like, oh, I don't
- 1:15like them. Their personality is kind of and
- 1:17so I'm going to ask for God to like really nail them.
- 1:21It's not that at all. Instead, the imprecatory Psalms
- 1:25are God. You have made a covenant with
- 1:29your people and you have said as you all relate to me as your God
- 1:36and to each other in a right, good, holy, just way.
- 1:41There is blessing and there is joy, but if you break the
- 1:47covenant, if you either deal falsely with God that you
- 1:52worship other gods, you're not following the Lord, or you
- 1:56mistreat or kill or do evil towards other people that are
- 2:02part of the same covenant as you.
- 2:04There are, if you will, curses that will come on you as a
- 2:08result of breaking the covenant. And you can read about that
- 2:12pretty extensively in one of the songs of Moses in Deuteronomy.
- 2:17I believe it's 32 and 33 if I have those chapter numbers
- 2:20correct, that if you obey the covenant, there are blessings.
- 2:24If you disobey the covenant, there are curses.
- 2:27And so here David is crying out for God's justice against people
- 2:31that are doing wrong and doing evil in such a way as to break
- 2:36the covenant that they are supposed to have together as the
- 2:39people of Israel and the covenant that they're supposed
- 2:42to have with God. And so in recognition of the
- 2:46abject human wickedness, David is crying out to God for him to
- 2:53work and for him to be just and for him to right wrongs in a way
- 2:58that David goes, I can't fix this, God, I really need you to
- 3:03fix this. So I hope that even as we have
- 3:07that mindset coming into the Psalm, that that will be
- 3:10helpful, that there are times in your life and in mine where we
- 3:13go, man, this person is just making a mess of their life, of
- 3:19every relationship that they are in.
- 3:21They have harmed me in some ways.
- 3:24And God, like, I don't want to take out personal vengeance
- 3:28against them, but God, something needs to happen.
- 3:32And so, Lord, would you be the one that you operate, you work,
- 3:37you fight the battle that I can't fight.
- 3:40And so that ought to be our mindset and our prayer even as
- 3:44we walk into Psalm 109. And then as I often state, the
- 3:49one limiting factor on the imprecatory Psalms is always
- 3:54this. We remember Jesus and though he
- 3:57had a right to call down 10,000 angels to come and wipe out all
- 4:03of the Roman soldiers and the Pharisees and Sadducees that had
- 4:06arrested him and mistreated him and beaten him and nailed him to
- 4:09a cross, he did not pray an imprecatory prayer against those
- 4:15individuals. And so even as we follow Jesus,
- 4:18yes, we can ask for the justice of God.
- 4:20You can read Romans 12 and 13, as Paul has some things to say
- 4:23about that, but we ought to remember that our default
- 4:27posture has to be forgiveness and reconciliation and a prayer.
- 4:32God, would you save them? Would you help them to become in
- 4:36relationship with you so that that way this person that was my
- 4:41enemy can now be made into my friend.
- 4:43Something that of course, Paul, once Saul of Tarsus was very,
- 4:48very well aware of. All right, let's dive into the
- 4:51actual Psalm now. Psalm One O 9.
- 4:54God of my praise, do not be silent, for wicked and deceitful
- 4:59mouths open against me. They speak against me with lying
- 5:03tongues. They surround me with hateful
- 5:05words and attack me without cause.
- 5:08In return for my love they accuse me, but I continue to
- 5:12pray. They repay me evil for good and
- 5:16hatred for my love. Here David is saying, God, right
- 5:21now there are all of these mouths that are saying things
- 5:23about me that are not true. They are speaking hateful things
- 5:27against me. They are spreading lies about
- 5:29me. And so in the face of other
- 5:32people's wrong words, God, don't be silent.
- 5:37May you speak good words over my life.
- 5:40May your declaration of justice go out.
- 5:44Don't just stand by and do nothing as I am under assault.
- 5:50I do think here of Jesus in first Peter 2 and in Isaiah 53
- 5:57where it talks about Christ in his suffering.
- 6:00He did not open his mouth and like a sheep before her shearers
- 6:04is dumb, so he does not open his mouth.
- 6:08That Jesus suffered silently against the wickedness of
- 6:12mankind and because he was silent.
- 6:16Now we have the love of God spoken over us.
- 6:20We have the certainty of a home in heaven.
- 6:23We have our relationship with God that was purchased because
- 6:28God was silent. Because God did not send the
- 6:31angels to defend Jesus from his sufferings for our sins.
- 6:38What a thought there. So David here is asking God,
- 6:41would you intervene? Would you speak into my life,
- 6:47the judgment against evil and would you speak on my behalf?
- 6:52And I love that he says in verse 4 in return for my love, they
- 6:56accuse me. So these weren't people that
- 6:58David was just like at odds at. It was people that David trusted
- 7:01and David loved and yet it was not reciprocated.
- 7:05And that will happen in your life and in mine, where we love
- 7:08someone but they will have perhaps a thought about us in
- 7:13their mind. And so they think that we are
- 7:15out to get them, or they think that we have intended to do them
- 7:19wrong in some way, or we wanted to slight them in some area.
- 7:24So we will have times when we love people and we are not left
- 7:28in return. When that happens, we can
- 7:31remember that God has always loved us, but until the point
- 7:36when we responded to Him in faith, up until that point in
- 7:39our life, we hated God. We acted out of love with Him,
- 7:46and so we returned evil for the love that He had lavished on us.
- 7:51So David says in return for my love, they accuse me, but I
- 7:54continue to pray. The answer when you have
- 7:57problems with people is pray. Pray for them.
- 8:01Pray for healing, pray for restoration, pray for wisdom.
- 8:04Pray, yes, even here for justice, but pray God is the one
- 8:09who can work in the rooms that you and I are not in.
- 8:14I'm going to continue now in verses 6 through 15 as kind of
- 8:17this next section says God set a wicked person over him, let an
- 8:23accuser stand at his right hand. So an accuser.
- 8:27This is in Hebrew the word hasatan, so we would know the
- 8:32name Satan. It's actually a title in Hebrew,
- 8:37not a name. Satan is the accuser.
- 8:40That's that's his title, that's his quote, UN quote, if you
- 8:43will, his name. And so David here says, let
- 8:46Satan stand at his right hand. Let the prosecuting attorney
- 8:50stand at the side of this person that is speaking wrong things
- 8:54against me. Verse 7 when he's judged, let
- 8:57him be found guilty and let his prayer be counted as sin.
- 9:02That the fact that even it when he calls out to God that it is
- 9:06for selfish things that it is not a true prayer of dependence
- 9:10on the Lord. It is simply continuation of the
- 9:15self centeredness and evil and sin that is within the heart of
- 9:19this person that would attack David.
- 9:21So David says Lord, let him be found guilty when he's judged.
- 9:26Let even his prayer be counted as sin.
- 9:28Verse 8 let his days be few. Let another take over his
- 9:32position. Let his children be fatherless
- 9:35and his wife a widow. Let his children wander as
- 9:38beggars searching for food far from their demolished homes.
- 9:43Creditor sees all he has. Let strangers plunder what he
- 9:47has worked for. Let no one show him kindness,
- 9:50and let no one be gracious to his fatherless children.
- 9:53Let the line of his descendants be cut off.
- 9:56Let their name be blotted out in the next generation.
- 9:59Let the iniquity of his Father's be remembered before Yahweh, and
- 10:03do not let His mother's sin be blotted out.
- 10:07Let their sins always remain before Yahweh, and let him
- 10:11remove all memory of them from the earth.
- 10:15OK, that's really, really tough. Direct even we would say in the
- 10:23light of the New Testament. This is probably not the exact
- 10:26like wording of a prayer that we would even feel any comfort in
- 10:30sharing. But this is the heart of someone
- 10:32who is going through incredible hardship and difficult guilty
- 10:37and betrayal. And when you are feeling those
- 10:41emotions, frankly, what I see here is God cares about you in
- 10:45those instances that when you feel like this is what you want
- 10:49to say about your arch nemesis, about your family member that
- 10:54you're totally at odds with, with that coworker, that you're
- 10:57like God, would you just like remove them from the scene, let
- 11:01their marriage fall apart, let their kids hate them?
- 11:04And would you let no one love their kids forever?
- 11:07Would you help their home to burned out?
- 11:09Like when you have those awful thoughts and emotions, God's
- 11:14like, OK, I don't hate you. I might not sign off on that.
- 11:18I might not do those things that you're asking me to do, but I
- 11:21understand the hurt that you are experiencing because you were
- 11:27created for a good relationship with God and with people.
- 11:31And God is the one that never does wrong by us and so we can
- 11:36always rely on Him. But we were also created for a
- 11:39good relationship with other people.
- 11:41And when that is broken, it should genuinely hurt our souls
- 11:46because that's not what God made us for.
- 11:49And so as we experience that heartbreak, like, bring it to
- 11:53God. You can tell God anything and
- 11:55he's not going to be like, whoa, I've never heard that before.
- 11:57You're so terrible. No, bring the raw, real emotion
- 12:03of rage and anger and abject depression and despair.
- 12:08Bring it all to God because he already knows that you're
- 12:12thinking it. So just say it to him.
- 12:14And as you say it to him, it can help form and shape your heart
- 12:20so that you begin to think differently about the situation.
- 12:23Or you might begin to think with some clarity about the
- 12:26situation. You need to get it off your
- 12:28chest. And so give it to the One who
- 12:31deserves to hear it. But I do think it's helpful.
- 12:35Then in verses 16 through 20 that David says, here's why I'm
- 12:39asking all of these crazy things that seem over the top and just
- 12:45seem like, OK David. Like, I don't think his kids
- 12:49deserve to like, never have anyone show the mercy.
- 12:52Like, aren't you just being a little bit of a jerk right now?
- 12:55The short answer is yes. But then in verses 16 through
- 12:5920, we can see some of the actions that were done that
- 13:02would cause David to have this heart, even in addition to the
- 13:06lies and betrayal and hatred that these people are bringing
- 13:12against David. So verse 16.
- 13:13For he did not think to show kindness, but pursued the
- 13:17suffering, needy and broken hearted in order to put them to
- 13:22death. So here there's a murderer, a
- 13:26murderer of the poor, a murderer of those that were suffering, a
- 13:31murderer of those that had encountered loss.
- 13:36And so for the murderer, you know, kind of makes sense.
- 13:39You're like, yeah, I I I understand why someone would
- 13:43want everything in their life to just like if you will be
- 13:47exploded that there would be nothing left of this kind of
- 13:51evil person. I've people in my life that I
- 13:55know have lost even children to violence and to murder and they
- 14:04for years had to work through in their heart like the grief of
- 14:08having lost their adult son. And I, I think here's Psalm 109
- 14:15gives comfort that God says when you have these big emotions,
- 14:20bring them to God and know that he doesn't, if you will, he
- 14:24doesn't think you're crazy. He's encountered this before and
- 14:28he's encountered it for thousands of years.
- 14:31And so you can know that God knows what it's like.
- 14:35God's son was murdered on the cross by the governments of this
- 14:41world, by both the the Roman government and the and the
- 14:46Jewish government of the time. And so God knows what it's like
- 14:50to experience murder. And so we can call out to him
- 14:55when we have those thoughts. Verse #17 he loved cursing.
- 15:00Let it fall on him. That is a strong denunciation
- 15:05and hatred of other people. He loved tearing other people to
- 15:09shreds with his words. So he says, God, this dude loved
- 15:13cursing, so let him be cursed. He took no delight in blessing.
- 15:17Let it be far from him. He didn't encourage other
- 15:20people. He didn't speak well of them.
- 15:21He didn't speak life into them. And so let no one do that for
- 15:24him. Verse 18, he wore cursing like
- 15:27his coat. Let it enter his body like water
- 15:31and go into his bones like oil. He says all of the terrible
- 15:35things that he said about and for and towards other people.
- 15:40May all of that boomerang back onto him, if you will.
- 15:45May he reap what he has sown. Verse 19.
- 15:49Let it be like a robe he wraps around himself, like a belt he
- 15:52always wears. Let this be Yahweh's payments to
- 15:57my accusers, to those who speak evil against me, he says God.
- 16:01Everything that they put out onto me, let it come back onto
- 16:04their own head. But then David, like, breathes a
- 16:10little bit and begins to talk to God.
- 16:13So all this time he's been talking to God about other
- 16:16people and now he's just going to talk to God.
- 16:19He says, But you, Yahweh, my Lord, deal kindly with me for
- 16:23your name's sake, because you are faithful.
- 16:26Love is good. Rescue me, for I am suffering
- 16:30and and needy. My heart is wounded within me.
- 16:33I, I fade away like a lengthening shadow.
- 16:36I'm, I'm shaking off like a locust.
- 16:39My knees are weak from fasting and my body is emaciated.
- 16:43I've become an object of ridicule to my accusers.
- 16:47When they see me, they shake their heads in scorn.
- 16:52This is a verse actually that's quoted if I remember correctly.
- 16:55It's in Matthew talking about Jesus on the cross.
- 16:59And Matthew says David is actually prophesying here about
- 17:04Jesus, that as they saw Christ on the cross, emaciated and and
- 17:10hurt and bleeding out and bloodied from the beatings, they
- 17:16ridiculed him. And they shook their heads in
- 17:19scorn at the only begotten Son of God.
- 17:23Verse #26 Help me, Yahweh, my God, save me according to your
- 17:28faithful love, so they may know that this is your hand, that you
- 17:34Yahweh have done it. He says, God save me and save me
- 17:37in such a way that everyone goes, oh, yeah, that that had to
- 17:40have been the God of David because David couldn't
- 17:42orchestrate that. But David's God did this.
- 17:45This is consistently my prayer about so many situations in my
- 17:49life and in the lives of those that I love is God.
- 17:52Would you do something and do something in such an incredible
- 17:56way that it's obvious that it was you?
- 17:58No one else could do this. No one else could finagle this.
- 18:01This is the work of God. So that's my prayer verse #28
- 18:06Though they curse, you will bless.
- 18:09When they rise up, they'll be put to shame, but your servant
- 18:13will rejoice. My accusers will be clothed with
- 18:16disgrace. They will wear their shame like
- 18:18a cloak. I will fervently thank Yahweh
- 18:22with my mouth. I will praise Him in the
- 18:24presence of many, for He stands at the right hand of the needy
- 18:29to save him from those who would condemn him.
- 18:34I love this thought that it's God the evil doers, the wicked,
- 18:38the the murderers, the unkind. They will get what's coming to
- 18:43them says, But Lord for me, when I experience your salvation, I'm
- 18:48not just going to rejoice in the downfall of the wicked, though
- 18:52that can be a great day when good wins and when evil is put
- 18:56down. He says, God, I'm going to
- 18:58praise you to other people in the presence of a whole ton of
- 19:01people. I'm going to say what my God is
- 19:04like. I'm going to talk about Yahweh
- 19:06and I'm going to thank you because you stand that that
- 19:10verse 31. I love for He stands at the
- 19:12right hand of the needy to save him from those who would condemn
- 19:16him. And I think about the state of
- 19:18our souls before Christ, that we were needy, we were the
- 19:21condemned, we were those that deserved judgment.
- 19:26As a result of our wickedness, we were far away from God.
- 19:29We had completely left the path of righteousness.
- 19:33We had left the path of relationship with God and
- 19:36instead we pursued sin and death and evil.
- 19:39And yet Jesus stands at the right hand of the needy, and He
- 19:45saves us from those that would rightfully condemn us.
- 19:49That we are saved from the righteous good wrath of the
- 19:55judge of the whole earth. We're saved from the wrath of
- 19:59God through what Jesus accomplished for us.
- 20:02We are saved from the condemnation of Satan the
- 20:05Accuser as a result of Jesus standing beside us.
- 20:10And I would echo in the words of Romans 8, If God is for us, who
- 20:14can be against us? He that spared not his own Son,
- 20:17but delivered Him up freely for us all, How shall he not with
- 20:21Him also freely give us all things?
- 20:23Who can lay anything to the charge of God's elect?
- 20:27It is Christ that justifies, yeah, that is at the right hand
- 20:32of God interceding for us. What an amazing God that we
- 20:39serve. And if you are needy, if you are
- 20:42angry, if you have this, this rage and this hurt that you are
- 20:47experiencing, bring it to God and he will save, he will
- 20:51protect, he will restore you. Call on him that he would be
- 20:56glorified, that evil would be put down.
- 20:59And if it doesn't happen immediately or if it doesn't
- 21:02happen in this life, it will happen for all of eternity, that
- 21:06for 100 billion trillion, quadrillion years and forever
- 21:11into the future, evil will be punished and you will be
- 21:15vindicated for every person that has believed in Jesus.
- 21:20If you've never put your faith in Christ, I encourage you.
- 21:24We have all said and done and thought things that go against
- 21:28the nature and character and commands of God as a result of
- 21:32that which is sin. Sin is anything we think, say or
- 21:36do that goes against God's character and His law, His
- 21:39commands. Because of our sin, we deserve
- 21:43punishment, condemnation. But Jesus came and died for us
- 21:47on the cross so that we could be forgiven, so that we could be
- 21:51brought back into relationship with God, so that Satan the
- 21:54accuser, his claims that we deserve punishment, he would be
- 21:59shut up because Christ already took the punishment.
- 22:02So there's no punishment left for us who believe in Christ.
- 22:06And the Bible says that everyone who calls on the name of the
- 22:08Lord will be saved. And that if we confess with our
- 22:11mouth that Jesus is Lord, he's the one that's in charge of our
- 22:14life, He's our master, He's the 1:00 calling the shots, that if
- 22:18we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and we believe on
- 22:21him in our hearts that we are given the righteousness of
- 22:25Christ and we will be saved forever.
- 22:29We have a relationship with God. God places his Holy Spirit
- 22:32inside of us and we live our life in the new way that is
- 22:37walking with Jesus as our Lord and our Savior.
- 22:41And anyone that comes to Jesus, he will forgive.
- 22:45He will restore and redeem. He will make you into, as the
- 22:49apostle Paul said, a new creation.
- 22:52And so turn to him today. And he is good on His word.
- 22:56Well, I hope Psalm 109 was an encouragement to you.
- 22:59Definitely some strong language that is in that Psalm, but it
- 23:03speaks to the brokenness of the human heart when we undergo
- 23:08evil. But I'm thankful that for every
- 23:11evil person that turns to Jesus, they can find forgiveness and
- 23:16that means I can experience forgiveness and so can you.
- 23:19Thanks for tuning in. See you next Wednesday as we
- 23:21look at Psalm 110, which is one of the New Testament writers
- 23:26favorite Psalms because it talks so clearly about Jesus.
- 23:30Looking forward to diving into that with you next week.
