- 1:58Speaker 2: detective sergeant.
- 2:00Speaker 3: You're assigned to auto theft detail.
- 2:02Speaker 2: A gang of criminals masquerading as legitimate auto dealers start
- 2:05Speaker 2: to work in your city. Innocent people are cheated out
- 2:08Speaker 2: of thousands of dollars. The thieves are clever, they work
- 2:12Speaker 2: a foolproof formula. Your job stop them.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Dragnet the document a drama of an actual crime. For
- 2:25Speaker 4: the next thirty minutes, in cooperation with the Los Angeles

- 2:47Speaker 5: It was Tuesday, February nineteenth. That was Chile in Los Angeles.
- 2:51Speaker 5: We're working the day Watch out of auto theft. My
- 2:53Speaker 5: partner's Ben Romero. The boss is Captain Nelson. My name
- 2:56Speaker 5: is Friday. We're on the way out from the office,
- 2:58Speaker 5: and it was ten twenty five am when we got
- 3:00Speaker 5: to the corner of thirty eighth Street and Maxbury Avenue,
- 3:03Speaker 5: the Green Leaf Danye Nursery School.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Missus H. Palmer, is that right?
- 3:11Speaker 5: I mean I think so. In just a minute I
- 3:13Speaker 5: kind of written down. Yeah.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Excuse me, ma'am. We're looking for a Missus viol of Palmer.
- 3:22Speaker 6: I'm missus Palmer, what is it you wanted?
- 3:24Speaker 5: We're police officers, ma'am. This is my partner, sizent Rom.
- 3:27Speaker 5: Now my name is Friday. Auto theft detail.
- 3:29Speaker 6: Oh, yes, about my car. You're going to investigate all
- 3:31Speaker 6: about it?
- 3:32Speaker 7: Is that it?
- 3:32Speaker 5: Yes, ma'am. We've been handling similar complaints the last month
- 3:34Speaker 5: or saw. We'd like to have you tell us everything
- 3:36Speaker 5: that happened in your case, if you would please.
- 3:38Speaker 8: One of the most underhanded things I've ever heard of, Sergeant.
- 3:41Speaker 8: It would have been the same thing if he'd help
- 3:42Speaker 8: me up with a gun just out and ount robbery.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Could you give us some of the details, ma'am, how
- 3:46Speaker 3: you were first approached on the deal.
- 3:48Speaker 6: Excuse me a minute, please.
- 3:50Speaker 7: Children, time to go inside. Now we're going.
- 3:53Speaker 8: To color pictures with the crayons this morning.
- 3:56Speaker 6: Missus Johnson has them all ready for you inside. O
- 4:00Speaker 6: my coast on run so long now inside, everyone.
- 4:04Speaker 8: Certainly wish the warm weathered hurry up and come. Children
- 4:07Speaker 8: always raise such an uproar when he had to keep
- 4:09Speaker 8: them indoors. Worst part of running a day nursery to
- 4:11Speaker 8: winter months.
- 4:12Speaker 5: Yes, man, I supposing now about your automobile and this parmer,
- 4:14Speaker 5: we understand you had it up for Sally Advertising one
- 4:16Speaker 5: of the local newspapers.
- 4:18Speaker 6: Yes, that's right.
- 4:19Speaker 8: I ran one of those three day one ads over
- 4:21Speaker 8: the weekend Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I thought I'd get
- 4:24Speaker 8: more from my car if I sold it myself. I mean,
- 4:26Speaker 8: instead of selling it to a used car lot.
- 4:28Speaker 5: Absolutely. How many answers did you get on your walt ad?
- 4:30Speaker 8: Well, just the one way it turned out. This man
- 4:33Speaker 8: came out and looked at my car first thing in
- 4:34Speaker 8: the morning. He offered to pay me exactly what I
- 4:36Speaker 8: was asking for it, so I sold it to him.
- 4:38Speaker 6: That's just the way it went.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Who was this man, missus Palmer? Was he representing some
- 4:42Speaker 3: auto company?
- 4:43Speaker 8: Yes, he said he was. Anyway, he gave his name
- 4:45Speaker 8: to Joseph Newhall. I've got his card inside. Said he
- 4:48Speaker 8: was a buyer for Dan Barton Juice car lot on
- 4:50Speaker 8: South cap Street.
- 4:51Speaker 6: Nicely dressed man. He made it all seem so honest.
- 4:54Speaker 3: I was a deal of arranged, could you tell us,
- 4:56Speaker 3: I mean transfer the car, payment and so forth.
- 4:58Speaker 8: Well, he gave me a check for fifty dollars down
- 5:00Speaker 8: payment to hold the car for him. Was a certified
- 5:02Speaker 8: company check, I see. He told me I'd be back
- 5:05Speaker 8: that afternoon with a certified check for the full amount
- 5:07Speaker 8: of the car eight hundred dollars.
- 5:09Speaker 5: Did he take your car with him then, No, he didn't.
- 5:11Speaker 8: That's why I had no reason to be suspicious. He
- 5:14Speaker 8: left me the check for fifty dollars and said he'd
- 5:16Speaker 8: be back later with the rest of the money. Said
- 5:18Speaker 8: in the meantime one of the employees from the used
- 5:20Speaker 8: car lot might be along to pick up the car
- 5:22Speaker 8: to save me the trouble of driving it downtown myself.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Mm hmm, same Amo Joe all the way.
- 5:26Speaker 5: Yeah, it looks like that. Well, how did it go
- 5:28Speaker 5: after that? In Miss Palmer?
- 5:30Speaker 8: This worker from the used car lot came to the
- 5:31Speaker 8: house to pick up the car about one o'clock that afternoon,
- 5:34Speaker 8: gave me a check for the full mount of the car,
- 5:36Speaker 8: and I gave him the pink slip had a pair
- 5:39Speaker 8: of white cover alls on lettering on the back of
- 5:41Speaker 8: him Dan Barton Jews cars. Looked like a typical mechanic
- 5:45Speaker 8: or something. I wasn't the least bit suspicious.
- 5:47Speaker 5: Um hm. How about the buyer, this Joseph Newhall. Did
- 5:50Speaker 5: he show up later in the day.
- 5:52Speaker 8: No, he never came back. I've never seen him since.
- 5:54Speaker 8: Haven't seen my car either. I call that Dan Barton
- 5:57Speaker 8: juice car lot. The next morning they told me they
- 5:59Speaker 8: never heard of you.
- 6:00Speaker 5: New Hall.
- 6:01Speaker 8: Just made me a sick officer. I can't afford to
- 6:03Speaker 8: lose the money I had in that car.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Yes, ma'am, we understand the same things happened to a
- 6:07Speaker 3: dozen people like you around the city.
- 6:09Speaker 5: Do you remember what this man new Hall looked like?
- 6:11Speaker 5: Miss Palmer's physical description, maybe the clothes he was wearing.
- 6:15Speaker 8: Yes, I've got it all written down, sergeant, in my diary.
- 6:18Speaker 8: Would you like to step inside please, I've got my
- 6:20Speaker 8: little office at the back.
- 6:21Speaker 9: Of the school here.
- 6:22Speaker 5: Well, thank you very much.
- 6:23Speaker 8: Now, I always make a record of everything in my diary.
- 6:26Speaker 8: I've kept going ever since it was a girl in
- 6:28Speaker 8: college every day.
- 6:29Speaker 3: I suppose you've got all the information on your car
- 6:31Speaker 3: to make license number, things like that.
- 6:33Speaker 8: Oh, yes, indeed, I got everything together I thought might
- 6:36Speaker 8: help you right up these stairs.
- 6:37Speaker 5: Please you go ahead. How about the description of the
- 6:41Speaker 5: man in overall, so, the one who came to pick
- 6:43Speaker 5: up your car. Would you remember him, ma'am.
- 6:46Speaker 8: Yes, I've got that for you too. Everything I thought
- 6:48Speaker 8: would help. Just have a seat their officers. I've got
- 6:50Speaker 8: the things in.
- 6:51Speaker 6: My desk here, thank you, right ahead, thank you. I
- 6:56Speaker 6: wouldn't mind.
- 6:57Speaker 8: The whole thing so much, but as I say, I
- 6:59Speaker 8: can't afford to lose the cash I had tied up
- 7:01Speaker 8: my car.
- 7:02Speaker 3: And seems to be the way the thieves operate, ma'am.
- 7:04Speaker 3: They've been cheating the people who at least of forty.
- 7:06Speaker 8: Terrible thing just out and out robbery. There you are, sergeant,
- 7:09Speaker 8: uh huh, thank you, ma'am. There's the description of my car,
- 7:12Speaker 8: license number, all the rest.
- 7:13Speaker 5: Yes, I see.
- 7:14Speaker 9: And here's the description of the.
- 7:15Speaker 8: Two men, Joseph Newhall and the man in coveralls who
- 7:18Speaker 8: picked up my car.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Have you got that deposit check? New Hall gave him
- 7:21Speaker 3: his bomb and the check for fifty dollars.
- 7:23Speaker 9: Right here, sergeant.
- 7:24Speaker 8: I saw that company about it, Dan Marton's juice car lot.
- 7:27Speaker 9: It's forgery, not worth the papers printed on.
- 7:32Speaker 3: I look, Joe, yeah, I say, same as the other one.
- 7:35Speaker 7: Thing.
- 7:35Speaker 8: I don't understand how those crooks get these checks to
- 7:37Speaker 8: begin with.
- 7:38Speaker 9: Did they steal it?
- 7:39Speaker 5: No, man, we figured they had them printed up. We're
- 7:41Speaker 5: still trying to find out where.
- 7:42Speaker 8: Well, you know what the men look like you'll be
- 7:43Speaker 8: able to find them, now, won't you.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Only we should work that way, ma'am. We've had good
- 7:47Speaker 3: descriptions on both men for a month now. Hasn't helped
- 7:49Speaker 3: too much.
- 7:50Speaker 8: I don't understand it at all. As I say, they're
- 7:52Speaker 8: only common crooks. They can't be that smart, can they.
- 7:55Speaker 5: Well, there's only one way we can judge. We've been
- 7:57Speaker 5: hunting every day for a month now. Yes, they're still
- 7:59Speaker 5: running free. In the space of thirty three days, the
- 8:04Speaker 5: auto theft gang and victimized a dozen private citizens throughout
- 8:08Speaker 5: the city. In each instance, the approach and the method
- 8:10Speaker 5: of operation had been the same. The frontman for the
- 8:13Speaker 5: gang would personally answer a want head inserted in the
- 8:16Speaker 5: local newspaper by a private citizen advertising the sale of
- 8:19Speaker 5: his automobile. The frontman would represent himself falsely as a
- 8:23Speaker 5: buyer for Dan Barton's used car lot, a well known
- 8:26Speaker 5: and legitimate used car dealer. He'd offer to pay exactly
- 8:30Speaker 5: the sale price which the private party was asking as
- 8:33Speaker 5: a deposit. The so called buyer would leave a counterfeit
- 8:36Speaker 5: company check for fifty or one hundred dollars, with a
- 8:39Speaker 5: promise that he would return later in the day with
- 8:40Speaker 5: a certified check for the full amount. After a few hours,
- 8:44Speaker 5: another man, posing as an employee if Dan Barton's Used
- 8:47Speaker 5: Car Lot, would call for the car and drive it away.
- 8:50Speaker 5: Neither the car nor the so called buyer were ever
- 8:52Speaker 5: seen again. All efforts to trace them went for nothing.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Eleven forty am, Ben and I went back to the
- 8:58Speaker 5: office and got out a broadcast up on Entry APB
- 9:01Speaker 5: on Missus Palmer's car and also on the phony car
- 9:03Speaker 5: buyer who called himself Joseph Newhall. After lunch we met
- 9:07Speaker 5: with Sergeant Ormsby, one of the other four men out
- 9:09Speaker 5: of all that detail who were working the case with us.
- 9:11Speaker 3: How'd you make out this morning? More? I mean that
- 9:13Speaker 3: lad go anyway at all?
- 9:14Speaker 10: Wasn't bad As far as he went. We found a
- 9:15Speaker 10: place where they had the printing.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Done, you know where.
- 9:17Speaker 10: It was a small job printed way out in the valley,
- 9:20Speaker 10: printed up the phony checks with that heading on it.
- 9:22Speaker 10: Dan Barton's Used Car Lot got out some business cards
- 9:25Speaker 10: for him too.
- 9:26Speaker 5: What with the names?
- 9:26Speaker 10: You find out that same one, Joseph Newhall. He ordered
- 9:29Speaker 10: the checks and the business cards printed described him for us,
- 9:32Speaker 10: the same guy. Where's it go from there?
- 9:34Speaker 5: No place?
- 9:35Speaker 3: Brinda told us new Hall had a car.
- 9:37Speaker 10: He couldn't give us a license number, couldn't even remember
- 9:39Speaker 10: the make of the body style.
- 9:40Speaker 5: Thought it was a late model car.
- 9:41Speaker 3: It's fund.
- 9:42Speaker 5: That's not much help.
- 9:43Speaker 10: No address on him either. It was a will call
- 9:45Speaker 10: order paid for in cash.
- 9:46Speaker 5: You told the printer to call us if Newhall comes back.
- 9:49Speaker 6: Ah, yeah, it's covered.
- 9:50Speaker 10: I don't figure there's much chance Newhall was going to
- 9:52Speaker 10: do that. He ordered enough checks printed up the first
- 9:54Speaker 10: time last three year.
- 9:56Speaker 3: I guess that's one lead we can forget.
- 9:58Speaker 10: How about that special run the Status Office made for
- 10:00Speaker 10: us yesterday, Anything come out of that.
- 10:01Speaker 5: Nothing. All the possibles on the list were checked out
- 10:04Speaker 5: all over clear. Nothing from Barton's used car lot either.
- 10:07Speaker 5: Everybody on their staff's been checked out. All their ex
- 10:09Speaker 5: employees too, No sign any one of them might add
- 10:11Speaker 5: a hand in the Yeah, oh either. Have you seen
- 10:14Speaker 5: the captain since this morning? No?
- 10:15Speaker 10: Why that idea we were talking over at the last meeting.
- 10:18Speaker 10: You figures we'll go ahead with it this weekend.
- 10:20Speaker 3: How does he figure on working? You know Army personal
- 10:22Speaker 3: con Day.
- 10:22Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right.
- 10:23Speaker 10: Most of the private parties who want to sell their
- 10:25Speaker 10: cars themselves use that want.
- 10:27Speaker 5: Ad deal over the weekend. They get a.
- 10:28Speaker 10: Special rate if they run their ad Friday, Saturday and Sunday,
- 10:31Speaker 10: I know, Thursday, nights of the deadline for having the ads,
- 10:34Speaker 10: and if they're going to run the full weekend, and
- 10:36Speaker 10: that's when we start working on it.
- 10:37Speaker 5: We get in touch with every private party who's filed
- 10:39Speaker 5: a want ad for the weekend advertising the set of
- 10:41Speaker 5: their car.
- 10:42Speaker 10: Yeah, we'll contact them by phone, every one of them.
- 10:44Speaker 10: If we advise them that if anybody representing themselves as
- 10:47Speaker 10: a buyer for Dan Barton to use Car a Lot
- 10:49Speaker 10: answers their want ad, they're to get in touch with
- 10:51Speaker 10: us right away. If they can't stall the man long enough,
- 10:54Speaker 10: we tell them to accept the deposit check, take down
- 10:56Speaker 10: all the information on the man the car is driving.
- 10:58Speaker 8: Know.
- 10:59Speaker 3: To work out if we can get any kind of
- 11:00Speaker 3: cooperation is going to be a big job. We'll have
- 11:02Speaker 3: to cover all the want ads and all the papers.
- 11:04Speaker 10: We've got a good description of that phony buyer, Joseph Newhall.
- 11:08Speaker 10: If they planted a want ad one of the papers.
- 11:10Speaker 10: Maybe he's the one of the gang who brought the
- 11:11Speaker 10: ad in. It's possible one of the ad takers might remember.
- 11:14Speaker 5: It might be worth checking anyway, Or it could be
- 11:16Speaker 5: they might have phoned in the ad too. That wouldn't
- 11:18Speaker 5: help much.
- 11:19Speaker 3: We might as well face it.
- 11:20Speaker 10: It's not food proof, but it's a different approach. It's
- 11:22Speaker 10: a plan anyway. We tried everything else we can think
- 11:25Speaker 10: of to reach the thieves.
- 11:26Speaker 5: I got him all about that body telling that's it?
- 11:35Speaker 5: When was that? I see? Yeah, yes, as soon as
- 11:41Speaker 5: we can, thank you, sir. Well, maybe we won't have
- 11:45Speaker 5: to wait for the weekend. A man out in Echo Park,
- 11:48Speaker 5: he runs a candy store out there. He advertised his
- 11:50Speaker 5: conference sale in this morning's papers said. The first one
- 11:52Speaker 5: to answer it was a buyer from Dan Barton's used
- 11:54Speaker 5: car lot. Gave his name as Joseph Newhall. Looks like
- 11:57Speaker 5: the same m all. They make a deal an only
- 11:59Speaker 5: candy store on a go for the deposit check. He
- 12:01Speaker 5: wanted to full him out, said the deal didn't satellite
- 12:03Speaker 5: to him. How's it stand now? New Hall said he'd
- 12:05Speaker 5: come back with a check for the full sale price
- 12:07Speaker 5: eight o'clock tonight, two twenty pm. We drove out and
- 12:15Speaker 5: questioned the candy store owner further. His description of new
- 12:18Speaker 5: Hall tallied with the others, but again the potential victim
- 12:20Speaker 5: had failed to get any kind of a description of
- 12:22Speaker 5: the car new Hall was driving, of the license number.
- 12:26Speaker 5: Ben and I staked out at the house. Eight pm
- 12:28Speaker 5: came and went. The suspect failed to show. By midnight,
- 12:32Speaker 5: there was still no sign of him. When he had
- 12:34Speaker 5: shaped up. New Hall apparently had a policy of making
- 12:37Speaker 5: a deal at first contact or forgetting about it. He
- 12:40Speaker 5: probably figured that if a person was at all suspicious,
- 12:43Speaker 5: the interval would give him time to check, and new
- 12:45Speaker 5: Hall wasn't giving away any odds. All day Wednesday, the
- 12:49Speaker 5: stakeout went on no sign of the suspect. On Thursday night,
- 12:53Speaker 5: the local newspapers gave us lists of names and phone
- 12:55Speaker 5: numbers of all private parties who had ordered want ads
- 12:58Speaker 5: for the coming weekend to advertise as the sale of
- 13:00Speaker 5: an automobile. We divided up the names and six of
- 13:03Speaker 5: us took turns on the phones and started calling each party.
- 13:06Speaker 5: We warned them about the carcept ring and advised them
- 13:09Speaker 5: of what steps to take in the event Joseph Newhall
- 13:12Speaker 5: or one of the other gang members approached them with
- 13:14Speaker 5: the proposition to buy their car. One of the private
- 13:16Speaker 5: parties we contacted was a mister Roy Harmon. Ben got
- 13:19Speaker 5: on one extension and read in the stock warning we'd prepared.
- 13:22Speaker 5: Sergeant Omsby used the other extension and called another party
- 13:25Speaker 5: running an ad serg.
- 13:26Speaker 7: The Los Angeles Police Department.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Out how that yes, and one of the gang usually
- 13:31Speaker 3: goes under the name of Joseph Newhall. Now if you're
- 13:33Speaker 3: contacted it all?
- 13:35Speaker 5: How's that?
- 13:37Speaker 3: When was that? Uh? I see, well where are you now?
- 13:42Speaker 3: Saying about an hour?
- 13:43Speaker 5: All right?
- 13:44Speaker 3: Thank you? What was that all about? Man with the
- 13:47Speaker 3: name of Harmon once a cocktail lounge out on the
- 13:49Speaker 3: South Cole He took in a check over the bar
- 13:51Speaker 3: last not company check from Dan Burton Jeue car Lot
- 13:54Speaker 3: says it was signed Joseph Newhall.
- 13:56Speaker 5: Will he ought to remember who passed it?
- 13:58Speaker 3: He does, I got it right here. A man was
- 14:01Speaker 3: the name of Frank Curtis. He's a regular customer at
- 14:04Speaker 3: the Boar. Harmon says. This Curtis came into place last
- 14:07Speaker 3: night with a man in a dark fruit and the
- 14:08Speaker 3: man seemed to be a friend of Curtis's. When I
- 14:11Speaker 3: asked him what the friend looked like, and he described
- 14:13Speaker 3: him it was new Hall.
- 14:15Speaker 5: What about that check business?
- 14:16Speaker 3: Harmon says he was tending boy at the time told
- 14:18Speaker 3: me this Frank Curtis and new Hall had quite a
- 14:20Speaker 3: few drinks together and he ran out of money. Newall
- 14:23Speaker 3: wanted to cash a check, but Harmon said.
- 14:24Speaker 5: No, he didn't know him. Well.
- 14:26Speaker 3: This Frank Curtis is a regular customer at the Boar,
- 14:29Speaker 3: and he offered the endorse the check for new Hall.
- 14:31Speaker 3: So Harmon said, okay, any case.
- 14:33Speaker 5: Well, how well does Harmon know this customer?
- 14:35Speaker 3: Is this Curtis pretty well, lives across the street from him.
- 14:40Speaker 5: We checked Frank Curtis through R and I, but he
- 14:42Speaker 5: had no previous criminal record. We left the rest of
- 14:45Speaker 5: the list for the other men, and Ben and I
- 14:47Speaker 5: drove out and talked to Roy Harmon, the owner of
- 14:49Speaker 5: the cocktail lounge where the suspect, Joseph Newhaul atchachs to check.
- 14:52Speaker 5: With the help of his friend Frank Curtis. Harmon told
- 14:55Speaker 5: the same story he'd given Ben over the phone. Curtis
- 14:58Speaker 5: was a long time neighbor of his, the steady customer
- 15:00Speaker 5: at his cocktail lounge. Just for new Hall, He'd never
- 15:03Speaker 5: set eyes on him until the night before. Harmon gave
- 15:06Speaker 5: us the home address of Frank Curtis and we checked
- 15:08Speaker 5: it out missus. Curtis answered the door and told us
- 15:11Speaker 5: that her husband, Frank, was working the newly inaugurated night
- 15:13Speaker 5: shift at an aircraft plant on the south end of
- 15:15Speaker 5: the city. Then and I drove down to the plant,
- 15:17Speaker 5: and after checking with the personnel office, we finally located
- 15:20Speaker 5: Curtis at his work. He was an assistant foreman in
- 15:23Speaker 5: one of the aircraft assembly.
- 15:24Speaker 11: Shops, the cruisigeant Romero. The last time I saw new
- 15:28Speaker 11: Hall before the other night was five years ago, just
- 15:31Speaker 11: to work at the walk plants together.
- 15:32Speaker 7: To matter anyway, has it done something?
- 15:34Speaker 11: We understand you endorsed to check the new Halls for
- 15:37Speaker 11: fifty dollars.
- 15:37Speaker 7: Do you know him, met?
- 15:38Speaker 11: Well, I mean that you'd endorse checks for him.
- 15:40Speaker 7: Well, maybe I shouldn't have.
- 15:42Speaker 11: Wife's always telling me I'll be more careful to who
- 15:44Speaker 11: I'm signing checks for.
- 15:46Speaker 7: Why what happened anyway? It wasn't check any good.
- 15:49Speaker 5: Do you have any idea where we could find this
- 15:50Speaker 5: friend of yours?
- 15:51Speaker 11: This new Hall?
- 15:52Speaker 7: Well, I don't know.
- 15:53Speaker 11: During the war he and his wife lived in this
- 15:55Speaker 11: housing project off North Maine.
- 15:58Speaker 7: I know they moved from that place though, Yeah, no
- 16:01Speaker 7: matter of fact. Oh Joe didn't tell me where he
- 16:03Speaker 7: was living.
- 16:04Speaker 11: I gave him my address, told him and drop over
- 16:06Speaker 11: for a beer sometimes. Don't remember getting his address though.
- 16:10Speaker 11: Couldn't tell me what this is about.
- 16:11Speaker 7: Huh, just a routine check.
- 16:13Speaker 11: We'd like to locate new Hall.
- 16:14Speaker 7: That's all. Got a few questions we'd.
- 16:16Speaker 5: Like to ask him.
- 16:17Speaker 11: Excuse me, we're gonna watch it here, so yeah, I
- 16:19Speaker 11: ain't coming through with that.
- 16:20Speaker 7: Jake Dang.
- 16:22Speaker 11: Okay, Fellas bet On through all, Claire, Rety go Bettest
- 16:26Speaker 11: family dollar three. They're getting busy again, all right, seems
- 16:31Speaker 11: like the old swing ship days all over again.
- 16:34Speaker 7: Four years.
- 16:35Speaker 11: Yeah. You mentioned a minute ago that new Hall is married,
- 16:38Speaker 11: miss Jerry. Yeah, that's right. What about his west? Can
- 16:40Speaker 11: you tell us anything at all about her?
- 16:42Speaker 7: Betty? No, No, I don't think so.
- 16:44Speaker 11: Her and Joe seemed to get along all right along
- 16:47Speaker 11: pretty well.
- 16:47Speaker 7: Matter of fact, nice girl, Betty. I never minded her much.
- 16:51Speaker 7: The new Hal's have any children?
- 16:52Speaker 5: Do you know that?
- 16:53Speaker 7: No? No kid for them? Work her aunt Joe?
- 16:56Speaker 5: Uh huh. Would you know if new Half's wife is
- 16:59Speaker 5: still working?
- 17:00Speaker 7: I don't know, probably is, but yeah, yeah, matter of
- 17:03Speaker 7: fact she is. Joe happened to mention it the other
- 17:05Speaker 7: night when we were talking. Just happen to think of it.
- 17:07Speaker 11: I go ahead, I remember I asked about Betty and
- 17:11Speaker 11: he said she was still working same old place, Sam
- 17:13Speaker 11: old job, that's all.
- 17:14Speaker 5: Where is this place she works? You know?
- 17:16Speaker 11: Yeah?
- 17:17Speaker 7: City Hall.
- 17:19Speaker 5: We continued questioning Frank Curtis, and he told us that,
- 17:22Speaker 5: to the best of his knowledge, the suspect's wife, Betty
- 17:24Speaker 5: new Hall, had a civil service rating and that she'd
- 17:27Speaker 5: worked as a file charak in the record room of
- 17:28Speaker 5: one of the bureaus in the municipal government. Early the
- 17:31Speaker 5: next morning, Ben and I got in touch with the
- 17:33Speaker 5: civil service officials at the city hall. They got out
- 17:35Speaker 5: of tracer on the wife of the suspect eleven twenty am.
- 17:39Speaker 5: I got it follow theft Friday, Yessie Hazah, I didn't
- 17:47Speaker 5: hear it when Yeah, I see Yessie right. We'll check
- 17:53Speaker 5: within about an hour. Bye. I don't know why we
- 17:56Speaker 5: always have to do it the hard way. Well, what
- 17:58Speaker 5: a call back on new Hall's wife. Most of checks
- 18:00Speaker 5: out just the way Curtis told us what Betty new
- 18:03Speaker 5: Hall quit her job a month ago, hasn't been around,
- 18:05Speaker 5: hasn't been seen since civil service can't even contact her,
- 18:08Speaker 5: what's the deal? She moved, no forwarding address, not a
- 18:11Speaker 5: trace of her. Saturday, February twenty third, the strongest lead
- 18:32Speaker 5: we'd had to the auto theft gang began to fade.
- 18:35Speaker 5: Missus Betty new Hall, the wife of our principal suspect,
- 18:38Speaker 5: wasn't to be found. We checked out all our known
- 18:40Speaker 5: friends and relatives, the places she was known to frequent.
- 18:43Speaker 5: There wasn't the trace of her. Ben got all the
- 18:45Speaker 5: available information on her from the Civil Service Office and
- 18:47Speaker 5: we got out a broadcast in the supplementary All Points bulletin.
- 18:51Speaker 5: We found out she had a ten year old son,
- 18:52Speaker 5: so we checked with the Board of Education to see
- 18:54Speaker 5: if the boy was registered in one of the city schools.
- 18:57Speaker 5: It wasn't listed. Still no response. He stayed on it.
- 19:01Speaker 5: In the meantime, the weekend was wearing past the halfway point.
- 19:04Speaker 5: The other two teams of men working the case were
- 19:06Speaker 5: standing by, but apparently none of the private parties who
- 19:08Speaker 5: were running want ads over the weekend advertising the sale
- 19:11Speaker 5: of an automobile had been approached yet by either Joseph
- 19:14Speaker 5: Newhall or some other member of the gang. If they
- 19:17Speaker 5: did make a contact, it hadn't been reported to us.
- 19:20Speaker 5: Saturday night, still no response. Eight to fifty pm. Ben
- 19:24Speaker 5: and I had some supper at Johnny Cochin's place and
- 19:26Speaker 5: then we went back to the office.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Not a bad man at all. Huh, it's pretty fair
- 19:32Speaker 3: for a Saturday night good soup. Yeah, there's nothing like
- 19:35Speaker 3: that corn chowder down and puts out. It's the best.
- 19:37Speaker 5: Sure we should do something about that coffee like taking
- 19:40Speaker 5: a shot of adrenaline, isn't it?
- 19:41Speaker 3: It is pretty strong? And excuse me? Maybe this was
- 19:45Speaker 3: giving me this heart? Then where's Armsby? I thought he
- 19:49Speaker 3: was covering, so I he was here when I left
- 19:52Speaker 3: Joe Ben.
- 19:53Speaker 5: High Army thought we lost you and taking a call
- 19:55Speaker 5: from Hollywood Division.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Good piece of news. What's that new Haul's wife?
- 19:59Speaker 10: They found her.
- 20:02Speaker 5: At approximately twenty five minutes past eight that night, a
- 20:05Speaker 5: dark haired woman in her late thirties had brought a
- 20:07Speaker 5: young boy into a pharmacy in the Hollywood area. Apparently
- 20:10Speaker 5: the woman had been drinking, but she was not intoxicated.
- 20:13Speaker 5: The young boy with her, whom she identified as her
- 20:15Speaker 5: ten year old son, was badly cut and bruised about
- 20:17Speaker 5: the face and the head. The woman insisted that the
- 20:20Speaker 5: pharmacist on duty treat the boy and attend to his injuries.
- 20:23Speaker 5: After arguing with the woman, the pharmacist called the Hollywood
- 20:26Speaker 5: Receiving Hospital. An ambulance was dispatched, and the boy and
- 20:29Speaker 5: his mother were taken there for emergency treatment. At Hollywood
- 20:32Speaker 5: Receiving the woman gave her name as Betty Harrison and
- 20:35Speaker 5: her son's name was George Harrison, but a routine identification
- 20:38Speaker 5: checked by officers next door at the Hollywood Division station
- 20:41Speaker 5: disclosed her true name as Missus Betty Newhall. The desk
- 20:44Speaker 5: sergeant ordered her health for interrogation and notified our office
- 20:47Speaker 5: immediately nine thirty pm. Ben and I arrived at the
- 20:50Speaker 5: Hollywood Division.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Her boy, George Missus Newhall, hadn't he happened to get
- 20:54Speaker 3: beat up like that? Pretty bad for little Phone.
- 20:56Speaker 12: I warned Joe about hitting little George. I told him
- 20:59Speaker 12: if he did it again, I walk out. Well, I
- 21:00Speaker 12: did walk out.
- 21:01Speaker 9: I don't care what happens to him.
- 21:03Speaker 3: You mean the boy's father did that to him, beat
- 21:04Speaker 3: him up like that?
- 21:05Speaker 12: He's not George's father. Second marriage, my name is to
- 21:08Speaker 12: be Doneley. I had two kids, one died.
- 21:10Speaker 5: Uh huh.
- 21:11Speaker 12: The divorce came through. I got custody as George and
- 21:13Speaker 12: I married Joe new Hall.
- 21:14Speaker 5: You know why we're looking for your husband, Miss new.
- 21:16Speaker 9: Hall, Yeah, I think so.
- 21:18Speaker 5: Why do you think so?
- 21:20Speaker 9: Car business? I knew what he was doing.
- 21:22Speaker 3: Do you have any idea at or where we can
- 21:24Speaker 3: find your husband?
- 21:25Speaker 5: Not sure?
- 21:25Speaker 12: He might be a lot of places. Just can't get
- 21:28Speaker 12: over what he did to George. No reason at all.
- 21:31Speaker 12: Kid came home and asked if we could go to
- 21:32Speaker 12: the show. Husband got up and slapped him. Been drinking
- 21:35Speaker 12: quite a bit. He hit the kid with his closed fist.
- 21:38Speaker 12: Kept hitting a gown man, slugging a ten year old
- 21:41Speaker 12: kid like that. I don't care about any man where
- 21:44Speaker 12: George is concerned, nobody he's gonna treat a kid of
- 21:46Speaker 12: mine like that.
- 21:47Speaker 3: You said you knew about your husband's dealing in the
- 21:49Speaker 3: car business, missus new Hall. How much do you know
- 21:51Speaker 3: about it?
- 21:52Speaker 9: I didn't have any part of it.
- 21:53Speaker 12: I can tell you that much was his idea from
- 21:55Speaker 12: the beginning of my husband's got the men together to
- 21:58Speaker 12: work the racket.
- 21:58Speaker 9: He made all the plans to get.
- 22:00Speaker 5: Why is it you quit your job at the city
- 22:02Speaker 5: hall in such a hurr?
- 22:03Speaker 12: My husband's idea, I guess he thought, if anything happened.
- 22:05Speaker 12: He didn't want to be traced that easy. Then he
- 22:08Speaker 12: had to go and get drunk that night cash that check.
- 22:10Speaker 12: He always did stupid things like that.
- 22:12Speaker 5: How about the gang your husband has working with him?
- 22:14Speaker 5: Is new Hall can tell us anything about them?
- 22:16Speaker 9: Yes? I can.
- 22:17Speaker 12: Three fellas working with him. I know, I s Deadman
- 22:20Speaker 12: and Curly Reese and Jack Whitmore. Maybe there's someone else
- 22:23Speaker 12: besides them, but I don't know 'em.
- 22:24Speaker 3: You know where these men live, ma'am? Where we can
- 22:26Speaker 3: find 'em?
- 22:26Speaker 9: I think I do. Yeah, I got the dresses at
- 22:28Speaker 9: home by this time.
- 22:30Speaker 3: They probably on the run, though, But you do know
- 22:32Speaker 3: the places they were supposed to be staying.
- 22:34Speaker 9: Yeah, I got the addresses at home.
- 22:35Speaker 5: How about the cars they got on this deal they
- 22:37Speaker 5: were working? What are they doing with 'em?
- 22:38Speaker 11: You know?
- 22:39Speaker 9: I don't know for sure? They were moving them east?
- 22:41Speaker 12: I think selling them back there, yes, ma'am. Why is
- 22:44Speaker 12: it the woman who always gets the dirty end of
- 22:45Speaker 12: the deal? My first marriage and this one Joe Newhall
- 22:48Speaker 12: a thief, heavy handed crook.
- 22:50Speaker 9: Why can't I meet a decent man for a change?
- 22:52Speaker 5: And I wouldn't know 'em man, neither one of 'em.
- 22:54Speaker 9: They didn't like kids. They didn't want to have a home.
- 22:57Speaker 9: Why'd they have to be that way?
- 23:00Speaker 5: Well, I'd like to ask you something if they could? Yeah,
- 23:02Speaker 5: whyjer Merriam ten forty three pm. We stopped at the
- 23:09Speaker 5: new Hall apartment on the way back to the city Hall,
- 23:11Speaker 5: called the office and arranged for a stakeout. The wife
- 23:14Speaker 5: of the suspect, Betty Newhall, gave us the names and
- 23:17Speaker 5: addresses of the people she knew to be working with
- 23:19Speaker 5: her husband, Joseph Newhall, and the auto theft gang. She
- 23:22Speaker 5: had no information to offer on the cars they might
- 23:24Speaker 5: be driving. When we got to the office, we took
- 23:27Speaker 5: a complete statement for Missus Newhall and then she was
- 23:29Speaker 5: booked in at the main jail on suspicion as grand
- 23:31Speaker 5: theft Auto eleven h nine pm. Together with Wilson and Normsby,
- 23:35Speaker 5: we started checking out the addresses of the gang members.
- 23:38Speaker 5: Our first two stops we got nothing. On our last
- 23:41Speaker 5: two we did a little better. We picked up a
- 23:42Speaker 5: Jack Whitmore, Curly Reese and a Carl Steedman, three of
- 23:46Speaker 5: the names which Missus Newhall had mentioned. We took them
- 23:48Speaker 5: downtown and booked them in at the main jail. That
- 23:51Speaker 5: still left the principal suspect, Joseph knew All unaccounted for
- 23:54Speaker 5: at one forty five am. The next morning, we got
- 23:57Speaker 5: a tip as to his whereabouts. It's a small hotel
- 24:00Speaker 5: in East first Street. We checked it out. The man
- 24:02Speaker 5: answering new Hall's description was registered in room two oh
- 24:05Speaker 5: nine on the second floor. We got a pass key
- 24:08Speaker 5: from the room clerk on duty and started up the stairs.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Two o nine. It's down this way, Jim, all right, yeah, seven,
- 24:22Speaker 3: you know, yeah, see if we can get a rise. Yeah, yeah,
- 24:33Speaker 3: that's something in that.
- 24:37Speaker 5: Yeah, police officers, so i'd hold up there, missus.
- 24:39Speaker 3: What is this?
- 24:40Speaker 5: Shake him down? Ben?
- 24:41Speaker 3: Yeah? Hey, what is this? What's this all about?
- 24:44Speaker 5: You generally sleep with your clothes on New Haulork.
- 24:46Speaker 13: I don't know what you're talking about. What is this shakedown?
- 24:48Speaker 13: He's clean, Joe. I don't check his bad and I
- 24:50Speaker 13: stay out of those things. You haven't got any right
- 24:51Speaker 13: breaking in here like this, going through why.
- 24:53Speaker 5: Problems relaxed New Halls won't take long.
- 24:55Speaker 3: Two full pads of him, Joe find him in his suitcases.
- 24:58Speaker 3: Company checks Dan Barton juice because.
- 25:00Speaker 5: We talked to your friends, mister. We got one side
- 25:02Speaker 5: of the store you want to come downtown, give us yours.
- 25:04Speaker 13: You get nothing from me, not only see my lawyer.
- 25:06Speaker 13: You can't hold me on any churches, Grand.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Theft, Auto or new Hall. We've got the witnesses, we've
- 25:10Speaker 3: got the evidence. If you've got something to say, say it.
- 25:11Speaker 3: If you haven't, will get along downtown. You haven't got
- 25:13Speaker 3: anything on me. You haven't got enough to hold me
- 25:15Speaker 3: an hour. We're going to give it a try.
- 25:20Speaker 5: For a full five hours, we questioned new Hall both
- 25:22Speaker 5: at the hotel and later downtown in the interrogation room,
- 25:25Speaker 5: and after five hours of questioning, he finally broke and
- 25:28Speaker 5: admitted being the mastermind behind.
- 25:30Speaker 3: The auto theft racket. Your true name is Joseph Woodard
- 25:33Speaker 3: new Hall. Is that right? Yeah, that's it now.
- 25:35Speaker 13: You can't blame the whole set up on me, though
- 25:37Speaker 13: my wife had a hand in it just as much
- 25:38Speaker 13: as I did. Well, we've already got her statement. You
- 25:40Speaker 13: want to give us yours, and she's just as much
- 25:42Speaker 13: to blame as I am. We didn't hurt anybody anyway.
- 25:44Speaker 13: It's just a con deal, that's all. We didn't hurt anybody.
- 25:47Speaker 3: How do you figure that? Well, just a simple con deal.
- 25:50Speaker 13: People advertising their cars for sale, are trying to cheat
- 25:52Speaker 13: out a few bucks on themselves. Were just outfigured on
- 25:55Speaker 13: that song. You're ready to dictate a statement for us.
- 25:57Speaker 13: You know we outfigured you two. You'd never reached us.
- 25:59Speaker 13: It wasn't from my wife.
- 26:00Speaker 3: We'd reach you if not in thirty years, you wouldn't.
- 26:03Speaker 3: Where'd you go in circles?
- 26:04Speaker 13: Just one hitch my wife and that stupid kidderage just
- 26:08Speaker 13: because I slapped.
- 26:08Speaker 3: Him around a little. I wouldn't be here if it
- 26:10Speaker 3: wasn't for that.
- 26:11Speaker 5: When you better learn a lesson, mister wife. Next time
- 26:13Speaker 5: you fight, don't pick a ten year old.
- 26:23Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 26:26Speaker 2: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:29Speaker 4: On May twenty ninth, trial was held in Superior Court,
- 26:31Speaker 4: Department eighty seven, City and County of Los Angeles, State
- 26:34Speaker 4: of California. In a moment the results of that trial,
- 26:46Speaker 4: a check off his fingerprints revealed that Joseph Newhall's true
- 26:49Speaker 4: name was Joseph Arren Henderson and that he had a
- 26:51Speaker 4: previous record of forgery and burglary in the state of
- 26:54Speaker 4: South Carolina. Henderson alias Newhall, was tried and convicted along
- 26:58Speaker 4: with its associates in the Auto Theft gang on eight
- 27:01Speaker 4: counts of grand theft and forgery of a fictitious check.
- 27:04Speaker 4: They receive sentences as prescribed by law. Grand theft is
- 27:08Speaker 4: punishable by imprisonment for not less than one or more
- 27:12Speaker 4: than ten years. Forgery of a fictitious check is punishable
- 27:16Speaker 4: by imprisonment in the county jail for not more than
- 27:18Speaker 4: one year or in the state penitentiary for not more
- 27:21Speaker 4: than fourteen years. The wife, Betty Newhall, was convicted as
- 27:25Speaker 4: an accomplice and was sentenced to serve one year in
- 27:27Speaker 4: the county jail.
- 27:28Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, our security and the peace of the
- 27:32Speaker 2: world are in danger, while hundreds of millions behind the
- 27:34Speaker 2: Iron Curtain are victims of vicious lies about the United
- 27:37Speaker 2: States and other free nations. Join the Crusade for Freedom

- 27:53Speaker 14: Join the Crusade for Freedom.
- 28:04Speaker 4: You have just heard Dragnet a series of authentic cases
- 28:07Speaker 4: from official files. Technical advice comes from the Office of
- 28:11Speaker 4: Chief of Police W. H. Parker, Los Angeles Police Department.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Welcome back. This is one of those episodes, and it's
- 28:59Speaker 1: a bit of a theme in drag Net where criminals
- 29:02Speaker 1: get caught not because they're terrible criminals, but because they're
- 29:07Speaker 1: terrible people who make enemies and will double cross or
- 29:12Speaker 1: abuse someone who decides to turn them in. I will
- 29:17Speaker 1: also say that I don't relate to the whole criminal
- 29:20Speaker 1: idea that you gave the police a good run and
- 29:23Speaker 1: bragging about how long you kept the police going. I mean,
- 29:27Speaker 1: if fits in to the psychology, but I don't claim
- 29:30Speaker 1: to understand it. When you undertake a life of crime,
- 29:34Speaker 1: if you make a mistake, you lose. The big difference
- 29:38Speaker 1: is that he's going to spend a lot more time
- 29:41Speaker 1: in jail than if he'd been caught the first time.
- 29:45Speaker 1: That's the prize for being such a brilliant criminal in
- 29:48Speaker 1: giving the police such a run. And then, of course
- 29:52Speaker 1: you have the whole moral justification for this that people
- 29:56Speaker 1: who sell cars are trying to cheat because you think
- 29:59Speaker 1: you car dealers are entitled to a cut of the
- 30:03Speaker 1: sale price of a car, or maybe it's a belief
- 30:06Speaker 1: that everyone selling their car privately is trying to pull
- 30:11Speaker 1: a fast one in terms of overcharging or hiding facts.
- 30:16Speaker 1: You know, it's the sort of expectation that if you're dishonest,
- 30:19Speaker 1: then everyone else is.
- 30:20Speaker 7: Well.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Now we turn to listener comments and feedback, and we're
- 30:23Speaker 1: gonna start out over on Spotify. We have a couple
- 30:28Speaker 1: of comments in the same vein A doctor who done
- 30:33Speaker 1: it wrote did my ears deceive me? Did Ben get
- 30:36Speaker 1: the zinger? At the end of this episode, way to
- 30:39Speaker 1: go Ben? And Peter writes Ben Romero got the last
- 30:44Speaker 1: word in this episode. I wonder how this happened. Did
- 30:47Speaker 1: Jack Webb lose a bet to Barton Yarborough? I think
- 30:50Speaker 1: it's the case with Barton Yarborough as opposed to Friday's
- 30:55Speaker 1: later longtime partners in Bill Ginn and Frank Smith, that
- 31:03Speaker 1: there's a sense in which he can be go Friday's
- 31:08Speaker 1: equal in many ways in physicality, certainly that can be
- 31:15Speaker 1: seen in the very first TV episode of Dragnet, where
- 31:19Speaker 1: he is the one who goes around the ledge and
- 31:23Speaker 1: delivers the punch to the man holding the bomb, or
- 31:28Speaker 1: in terms of taking over the narrative. I think that
- 31:33Speaker 1: with both Frank Smith and Bill Ginn and there was
- 31:38Speaker 1: a sense in which they operated a little bit as
- 31:42Speaker 1: comic relief, not quite in the sense of Sergeant Tartaglia
- 31:48Speaker 1: over on Broadways my bait. But they were the types
- 31:52Speaker 1: who didn't really go in for physicality. They were lighter. Yeah,
- 32:00Speaker 1: Ben Alexander did have that fight scene in the nineteen
- 32:04Speaker 1: fifty for drag Net movie, but honestly that was a
- 32:07Speaker 1: bit of a stretch. So while they were latter roles,
- 32:11Speaker 1: there is a real sense in which Ben Romero is
- 32:16Speaker 1: just as much of a cop, just as much able
- 32:20Speaker 1: to carry on the narration and the logging of the
- 32:23Speaker 1: case when Friday got shot in the big Ben, So
- 32:27Speaker 1: can he deliver a closing singer?
- 32:30Speaker 3: Sure?
- 32:30Speaker 1: And probably he's Joe Friday's only partner who actually could.
- 32:35Speaker 1: And then we have a comment from Mechanics sixty six,
- 32:38Speaker 1: who writes, what's Ernie going to gain by not giving
- 32:41Speaker 1: up his partner? Being able to do time without a
- 32:44Speaker 1: snitch jacket? Going to prison as a guy who read
- 32:47Speaker 1: it out his partner means hard time and probably getting shift.
- 32:51Speaker 1: I don't know how two witnesses could think Arkansas and
- 32:54Speaker 1: Midwestern accents sounded the same. I thought the first one
- 32:59Speaker 1: was going to say he sounded like Romero. Virginia Gregg
- 33:04Speaker 1: played three parts. I wonder if they got paid extra
- 33:08Speaker 1: for that well, taking the questions or comments in reverse order.
- 33:12Speaker 1: I believe that everyone got union scale, which and most
- 33:16Speaker 1: of the radio actors really made their money just by
- 33:20Speaker 1: the sheer number programs that they were able to appear in.
- 33:24Speaker 1: I also thought when the witness said that the person
- 33:28Speaker 1: talked funny, that you know, when Romero was doing the question,
- 33:33Speaker 1: that she would reference that that Texas accent is such
- 33:37Speaker 1: a big part of who he is as a character,
- 33:43Speaker 1: and it's so rarely even mentioned or addressed. As to
- 33:48Speaker 1: Arkansas on Midwestern, that's a tough one. I don't know.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Maybe a lack of exposure to those areas of the country,
- 33:57Speaker 1: that's the only thing I can think of. Although they
- 33:59Speaker 1: are all are some regions of some states that could
- 34:06Speaker 1: have kind of a twenty as sort of accent, like
- 34:09Speaker 1: if you had been from southern Ohio. Have heard quite
- 34:15Speaker 1: a few folks around Cincinnati with an accent that might
- 34:20Speaker 1: be classed in the Southern style if you weren't aware
- 34:23Speaker 1: of like the regional dialects. Then have a couple of
- 34:28Speaker 1: comments over on YouTube regarding the Big Waiter, which posted
- 34:33Speaker 1: on Thanksgiving, James writes, thank you Adam for making sure
- 34:37Speaker 1: we get our dragon neffects even on Thanksgiving. I hop
- 34:40Speaker 1: this video and I do so every chance I get
- 34:44Speaker 1: Thanks Day. I appreciate you mentioning the hot feature, which
- 34:48Speaker 1: is something newer on YouTube that you can do to
- 34:52Speaker 1: help your favorite videos perform well. And I appreciate everyone
- 34:57Speaker 1: who does it with ours. Mark says, nice break from
- 35:01Speaker 1: too much Thanksgiving. Well, I'm glad that I'm able just
- 35:05Speaker 1: to be there every day, even if I do take
- 35:09Speaker 1: the day off. And I was actually in Montana on
- 35:12Speaker 1: Thanksgiving Day this year, but we have everything recorded in advance,
- 35:16Speaker 1: so we're there as regularly scheduled. And then Mark Wrights,
- 35:22Speaker 1: these old radio shows are amazing history. And then we
- 35:26Speaker 1: had a comment over on the Great Detectives of Old
- 35:30Speaker 1: Time Radio website, and this one comes. And then a
- 35:35Speaker 1: comment from Dick over on the Great Detectives website regarding
- 35:40Speaker 1: the Big Crazy. So the husband's relatives will be lawyering
- 35:44Speaker 1: up and taking both the police and his vindictive sister
- 35:48Speaker 1: in law to court over this wrongful death right bakevat
- 35:52Speaker 1: civil suit for driving him to suicide. The DEA ought
- 35:55Speaker 1: to be to look into investigating the sister in law
- 35:58Speaker 1: for criminal charges. Well, she clearly manipulated this situation and
- 36:03Speaker 1: may well have done so hoping for just this outcome.
- 36:08Speaker 1: That's some interesting speculation. I think that regarding the criminal case,
- 36:15Speaker 1: you're going to have an awful hard time proving intent.
- 36:20Speaker 1: I think that the police having signed off on the
- 36:24Speaker 1: plan would really make that hard. Been a civil case
- 36:29Speaker 1: against her, I think would be very difficult. I think
- 36:32Speaker 1: a case against the police, a civil case against the
- 36:35Speaker 1: police would definitely be brought these days. But this, of
- 36:41Speaker 1: course was long ago, and as Eric suggested, and I
- 36:46Speaker 1: would tend to agree, this was probably a lot earlier
- 36:50Speaker 1: than the nineteen fifties. I don't think it was in
- 36:53Speaker 1: the nineteenth century, probably, but it wouldn't surprise me if
- 36:57Speaker 1: it was from the nineteen tens or nineteen twenties, where
- 37:01Speaker 1: you had a far less litigious society, particularly when it
- 37:06Speaker 1: came to these sort of lawsuits that you would bring
- 37:09Speaker 1: against a police department. Now, certainly there are lawyers out
- 37:12Speaker 1: in the audience.
- 37:13Speaker 5: I know that you listen.
- 37:15Speaker 1: I don't mean that in some sort of weird way.
- 37:17Speaker 1: I just mean it because people have emailed in and
- 37:21Speaker 1: identified themselves as members of the bar, as officers of
- 37:25Speaker 1: the court, although not in so many words, So anyway,
- 37:29Speaker 1: there are legal experts might have different opinions on whether
- 37:33Speaker 1: this would you know, if something like this, it's kind
- 37:37Speaker 1: of unimaginable that a modern police department would do. This
- 37:42Speaker 1: would have merit in a modern system, but I can't
- 37:46Speaker 1: imagine anything happening on the cistern law. You just really
- 37:50Speaker 1: would have to read minds and make assumptions. And I
- 37:54Speaker 1: don't see how you could establish that she had the
- 37:59Speaker 1: state of mind that you suspect. But thanks so much,
- 38:02Speaker 1: appreciate the comment. Now it's time to thank our Patreon
- 38:06Speaker 1: supporter of the day, and I want to thank Tony,

- 38:28Speaker 1: it from. We'll be back next Thursday with another episode
- 38:31Speaker 1: of Dragging That, But join us back here tomorrow for
- 38:34Speaker 1: yours truly Johnny Dollar, where.
- 38:37Speaker 15: It's almost as though you suspected somebody OF's murdering rays
- 38:40Speaker 15: it is the possibility, isn't it? Of course not who
- 38:43Speaker 15: several people like you. This is a few years of
- 38:47Speaker 15: a half baked marriage and struggling along. How you can
- 38:50Speaker 15: call wondering in Florida's struggle, I don't know.
- 38:52Speaker 9: I told you time to make it right.
- 38:54Speaker 15: Call well, now, long is the business now that it's
- 38:57Speaker 15: suddenly begin to process.
- 38:58Speaker 9: I'm just trying to say that.
- 39:00Speaker 15: And they all might still care for you, but look
- 39:01Speaker 15: pretty suspicious. Good, you don't know what you're talking about about,
- 39:04Speaker 15: Walt Bascom. It's pretty unusual one an insurance man. It's
- 39:07Speaker 15: so anxious to spend the company's money. But then if
- 39:10Speaker 15: he has intentions towards the beneficiary of the policy.
- 39:14Speaker 8: As this is.
- 39:14Speaker 15: Terrible, you're saying, I won't let you.
- 39:17Speaker 6: I won't stand for this.
- 39:20Speaker 15: Well, oh, now come on, put that thing down right cough.
- 39:24Speaker 3: I thought you'd come here instead of going after the mountain.
- 39:27Speaker 15: You know, everything you said was possible, dollar possible, but
- 39:30Speaker 15: not true. And I won't stand for you or anyone
- 39:33Speaker 15: else tormenting this fear this way. She's been through more
- 39:36Speaker 15: than she deserves as it is, and I'm not gonna
- 39:39Speaker 15: stand still while some stupid insurance. Dick makes her tear
- 39:41Speaker 15: her heart on right, cough and put that thing away,
- 39:44Speaker 15: and you get out of here. Just put yourself in
- 39:46Speaker 15: my foot I have. That's why I said, all those
- 39:49Speaker 15: wild theories of yours are possible, all of them. All
- 39:52Speaker 15: three of us have plenty the game with Ray Sheldon
- 39:54Speaker 15: out of the way, especially me, because in the long run,
- 39:57Speaker 15: I stand to benefit most. And I'd be number one
- 39:59Speaker 15: suspect because I was the last one to see Ray,
- 40:02Speaker 15: the only one who was with him when he died,
- 40:03Speaker 15: the only one who could have murdered him.
- 40:05Speaker 6: But and this is a big.
- 40:07Speaker 15: Bunt dollar, I had killed Ray Sheldon, neither you nor
- 40:12Speaker 15: anybody else would ever be able to prove it.
- 40:14Speaker 1: Oh, you'll be with us then in the meantime, send
