- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Brothers and sisters, welcome to Into the Mysteries of the Rosary, a mini-series of the podcast Contemplata.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Our hope is to dedicate one episode to each of the mysteries of the rosary.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: But let's begin by considering the rosary as a whole, and all the mysteries together.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: The rosary is one of the simplest and most powerful forms of prayer on earth.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Each decade begins with the Lord's Prayer, the Our Father.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Each Hail Mary has the holy name of Jesus at its center.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Each Hail Mary also calls upon Mary as the Mother of God to pray for us.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Each decade leads to doxology.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: But the rosary is not simply a repetition of prayers.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: The rosary is also a form of meditation on the life of Jesus.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Each decade is dedicated to one of the mysteries of his life.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: So in each decade we devote our minds to looking at Jesus, pondering Jesus, loving Jesus.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: The rosary then is more than a string of beads.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: The rosary is a string of mysteries.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Each mystery is a treasure chest of the truth.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Each mystery is a revelation of God's love for us.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: The rosary, they say, has a wisdom all its own.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: The mysteries of the rosary are not a random collection, they are an orderly sequence, and a beautiful one.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: The sequence of mysteries begins with the announcement of the angel Gabriel to Mary.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: The sequence of mysteries ends with the same son crowning his mother, queen of heaven and earth.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: A great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: The mysteries of the rosary are essentially the storyline of the gospel.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: The rosary is the short form of the gospel.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Those who learn the mysteries by heart learn the gospel of Jesus Christ by heart, and those who meditate on the mysteries become like Mary, who kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: When we ponder the mysteries of the rosary with love, our hearts and minds learn the wisdom of the rosary.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: How so?
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Well each one of the mysteries is part of a much larger mystery.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: We can call it the mystery, with a capital M.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Saint Paul speaks of the mystery many times.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: In Romans 16, he speaks of the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret for long ages, but is now disclosed.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: And in Colossians 1, he speaks of the mystery, hidden for the ages and generations, but now made manifest to his saints.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: In other words, from all eternity, even from before the foundation of the world, God held in his heart a mysterious, great secret.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: But now God has revealed that secret to his apostles, and the apostles in turn have proclaimed it to us.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: So what is the great secret of God which has now been revealed?
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Saint Paul tells us in the letter to the Ephesians that the great and mysterious secret of God is his whole plan for the world.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: God has a plan.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: God has a plan to save us from our sins and to draw us into his own wonderful life.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Essentially, it is a plan of adoption.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: God, the Holy Trinity, created you in order to adopt you by grace.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Just as a loving family reaches out to adopt an orphaned child, so the Holy Trinity reaches out to you and me and to sinful human beings everywhere in order to adopt us into God, into the Father's house in the heavenly places.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: So how does all this take place?
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: How does God accomplish his plan of adoption?
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: Well, the answer is found in the mysteries of the Rosary.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: God has sent his eternal Son into the world.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Jesus of Nazareth is the eternal Son of God, born of a woman, born under the law.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Jesus freely chose to endure his passion and die on the cross out of love for you and me, to wash away our sins in his own blood.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: But death could not hold him.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: God raised him from the dead, and now he lives to die no more.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: From his place now on high in the heavenly places, the risen Lord Jesus intercedes for us day and night before the Father, so that you and I might receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Thanks to Jesus, the love of God has been poured forth into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: In our baptism, you and I received the Spirit of Adoption as children.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: In our baptism, God granted us the grace to become children of the light and of the day.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: Now we strive with the help of the Holy Spirit to walk as children of the light.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: We strive to follow Jesus, to die daily in Christ, so that we might rise in Christ and live with him forever in the Father's house.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Mary, the mother of Jesus, was the first to follow him in the body to the Father's house, and now she too lives forever in God on high.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Now at this point someone might say, Hold on, wait a minute.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: That's a lot.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Could we go through all of that one more time?
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Well that's one of the principal purposes of the rosary.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: The point of the rosary is to pause for a moment, slow down our minds, and take a little time to meditate on all these mysteries.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: When we pray and meditate on the mysteries of the rosary, we go over certain parts of the story again and again, day in and day out.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: As we do so, slowly the veil is pulled back from the great mystery, and gradually we learn what life is all about.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: It's about God coming to us so that we might go to God.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: It's about God loving us first, so that we might learn to love God.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: It's about Jesus.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: He is the way to the Father's house on high.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Jesus is our life.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Jesus is our all.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Jesus is our God.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: If you want to understand more, well, it's time to pick up the rosary and pray.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: Thank you for listening to this episode of Contemplata.
