- 0:01Speaker 1: What is going on. Welcome back to another week of rutfresh.
- 0:05Speaker 1: My name is Jakoefer and we have four great guests.
- 0:08Speaker 1: We have a lot of coverage from Wisconsin this week,
- 0:10Speaker 1: so if you're from Wisconsin, you should be excited. If
- 0:13Speaker 1: you're in the area, that'd be all right too. But
- 0:15Speaker 1: we also have Jeff Thomas from New York to give
- 0:18Speaker 1: us his rough fresh report. And so it is getting
- 0:22Speaker 1: to be the time. This is the main event. This
- 0:24Speaker 1: is the time we have officially been waiting for sound
- 0:27Speaker 1: the alarm. We have some quick tips and strategies to
- 0:30Speaker 1: hopefully help you maximize any time you're able to sneak
- 0:33Speaker 1: out in the woods or whether you have a vacation scheduled.
- 0:36Speaker 1: This episode should help you maximize whatever time you have
- 0:39Speaker 1: in the woods, whether it's scouting or hunting. And I'm
- 0:42Speaker 1: going to kick it off with a little bit of
- 0:43Speaker 1: a challenge, my challenge to you. So this every week
- 0:46Speaker 1: we're gonna be doing a little challenge. My challenge is
- 0:49Speaker 1: for you to text your hunting buddy. Maybe you haven't
- 0:51Speaker 1: talked to him here for a little bit, but you
- 0:52Speaker 1: know he's been hunting. You know he's been trying his
- 0:54Speaker 1: best to set a text of encouragement and say, hey, man,
- 0:58Speaker 1: I know you're getting after it. It's a matter keep
- 1:00Speaker 1: at it. Games small, miss small, whatever variation of that,
- 1:03Speaker 1: send it to him. Send a little word of encouragement,
- 1:05Speaker 1: because we do put too much pressure on ourselves throughout
- 1:07Speaker 1: this time period and just a little words of encouragement
- 1:10Speaker 1: may go a long way. And as you know, Rofresh
- 1:13Speaker 1: is brought to you by land dot com, the leading
- 1:15Speaker 1: online real estate marketplace to find your perfect rural, recreational, agricultural,
- 1:20Speaker 1: or hunting properties here in the US. We're going to
- 1:23Speaker 1: kick things off with Eric Barber with a public land
- 1:26Speaker 1: buck from Wisconsin. Here is Eric, all right, first up
- 1:35Speaker 1: on the line, we have Eric Barber, who recently tagged
- 1:39Speaker 1: a big buck and the kind of a crazy story.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I read through the story and you had to spend
- 1:44Speaker 1: more time looking for the deer or less time looking
- 1:47Speaker 1: for the deer than you did a time that broke off,
- 1:48Speaker 1: So I think that's kind of funny. But Eric, how
- 1:50Speaker 1: you doing today?
- 1:51Speaker 2: I'm good man, I'm pumped to be here, Jake, thanks
- 1:53Speaker 2: for having me.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Absolutely so. I've been asking folks a tribute question at
- 1:59Speaker 1: the beginning of each interview, and I had someone already
- 2:01Speaker 1: on Wisconsin. So now you get a question about a
- 2:04Speaker 1: state that you don't live in because you're you're headed
- 2:07Speaker 1: to Kansas next. So this this one will actually be
- 2:11Speaker 1: kind of fun. What year or county or score? You
- 2:17Speaker 1: can answer any three of these any variation. I'll give
- 2:19Speaker 1: you a right answer on any of those. Was the
- 2:22Speaker 1: state typical record? Buckshot in Kansas? And I'll give you
- 2:26Speaker 1: a hint. This has recently been resurfaced and officially submitted
- 2:31Speaker 1: actually earlier this year. So I'm putting you on the
- 2:33Speaker 1: spot because I think.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Oh boy, man, my knowledge at Kansas is limited. I'm
- 2:41Speaker 2: going to guess the year is. I'm gonna go with
- 2:45Speaker 2: nineteen ninety four.
- 2:48Speaker 1: You're one year off nineteen ninety five, No kidding, yes
- 2:52Speaker 1: I could.
- 2:52Speaker 2: I couldn't tell you the county because I don't actually
- 2:55Speaker 2: know a Kansas county.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Fair enough, Yeah, I was shot in nineteen ninety five
- 2:59Speaker 1: and Franklin County with an exact score of two hundred
- 3:03Speaker 1: and zero eight eight inches. And then uh, mister Daniel
- 3:07Speaker 1: shot that year. And then actually we did. I did
- 3:09Speaker 1: a podcast from earlier this year and kind of like
- 3:11Speaker 1: chronicling and how the deer kind of didn't get officially
- 3:14Speaker 1: entered until very recently, so little little white to history
- 3:17Speaker 1: for you. But enough crazy, let's stop living in the past.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Let's live right now. Let's do it. Tell me about
- 3:24Speaker 1: your most recent successful hunt Man in October. Yeah, it was.
- 3:29Speaker 2: It was a kind of one of those hunts where
- 3:31Speaker 2: you don't expect to punch a tag but ended up
- 3:34Speaker 2: doing it. So the day of the hunt was October nineteenth.
- 3:37Speaker 2: It was just this past Sunday for me. My I've
- 3:41Speaker 2: got kind of a unique hunting situation where my wife
- 3:45Speaker 2: and I have a small thirty two acre lease that
- 3:48Speaker 2: we do some of our hunting on, but I would
- 3:50Speaker 2: say ninety percent of my hunting is done on public,
- 3:53Speaker 2: and I've got cameras all over, you know, a bunch
- 3:55Speaker 2: of different public pieces obviously on that thirty two acres
- 3:58Speaker 2: of private, but everything has been dead, just like deader
- 4:02Speaker 2: than dead. I have been kind of out of the game.
- 4:05Speaker 2: That's definitely switched here in the last couple of days.
- 4:08Speaker 2: But going into Sunday, my only rule was I'm going
- 4:11Speaker 2: to hunt nowhere near where I had a camera because
- 4:14Speaker 2: I just was feeling totally out of the game. And
- 4:17Speaker 2: then my other rule was I just need to find
- 4:19Speaker 2: fresh sign. Kind of go in blind, and if I
- 4:22Speaker 2: can find the sign, I'm gonna set up on it.
- 4:24Speaker 2: If I didn't find sign, I wasn't going to get
- 4:26Speaker 2: in a treat. And so it's Sunday, around three o'clock.
- 4:31Speaker 2: I hit the first piece that I wanted to go
- 4:33Speaker 2: to and there were three vehicles in the parking lot,
- 4:35Speaker 2: so I kind of scrapped that plan went to a
- 4:37Speaker 2: different lot. There were more vehicles in that lot, so
- 4:40Speaker 2: I just kind of kept, you know, bouncing around until
- 4:43Speaker 2: I finally found a place that didn't have vehicles in it.
- 4:46Speaker 2: And it's a place that I'd turkey hunted a little bit,
- 4:48Speaker 2: but never deer hunted, never scouted during the fall, anything
- 4:50Speaker 2: like that, so I had a little bit of familiarization
- 4:55Speaker 2: with it. But I just went in blind. And the
- 4:57Speaker 2: setup was, you know, as the crow fly, not super
- 5:00Speaker 2: far off the road, maybe within you know, four or
- 5:04Speaker 2: five hundred yards from the road, but as you the
- 5:06Speaker 2: access was really tricky. You got to kind of jog
- 5:08Speaker 2: around some private so you know, on foot distance is
- 5:11Speaker 2: probably just over a mile, and you got to cross
- 5:13Speaker 2: some pretty rugged terrain and once I crossed this big ditch,
- 5:17Speaker 2: I'm hunting in the driftless region of Wisconsin. Get up
- 5:21Speaker 2: on this big ridge top and there's a CRP field
- 5:24Speaker 2: up on the top. That CRP field then turns into
- 5:27Speaker 2: corn on the adjacent private land, and that corn was
- 5:30Speaker 2: still standing. And then that ridge falls off to the
- 5:34Speaker 2: west and goes into a big chunk of private land.
- 5:39Speaker 2: So I was kind of hunting near some some private
- 5:41Speaker 2: public boundaries. But when I was cruising that ridge, found
- 5:45Speaker 2: a pretty like a couple of fresh scrapes and there's
- 5:49Speaker 2: this old like abandoned, overgrown logging road. It just looked
- 5:53Speaker 2: like you you don't picture a deer kind of cruising that,
- 5:56Speaker 2: especially this time of year. So everything looked good. Got
- 5:59Speaker 2: set up in the tree, and at about five o'clock
- 6:02Speaker 2: had two young bucks, you know, a year and a
- 6:05Speaker 2: half old bucks, just a little basket. You know, four
- 6:07Speaker 2: pointers come by, but nonetheless early movement, you know, five
- 6:12Speaker 2: o'clock on public deer on their feet is always an
- 6:14Speaker 2: encouraging sign. And at about six o'clock, you know, a
- 6:18Speaker 2: hour later, had a real heavy wind, like.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Out of the west.
- 6:22Speaker 2: It was gusting up to eighteen miles an hour, so
- 6:26Speaker 2: your you know, ability to hear was was greatly decreased.
- 6:30Speaker 2: And I was with a buddy co worker of mine,
- 6:33Speaker 2: Cole Booth, and he was on the other side of
- 6:36Speaker 2: the tree. He was actually filming, and he's like, oh,
- 6:38Speaker 2: there's a buck coming down that road, and he reached
- 6:41Speaker 2: to go grab for the camera. I reached for my
- 6:43Speaker 2: bow and I had to kind of go up and
- 6:44Speaker 2: around my saddle to shoot on the weak side. It
- 6:47Speaker 2: was kind of a goofy set up there and caught
- 6:51Speaker 2: that buck creeping into the crp. I was gonna throw
- 6:54Speaker 2: a grunt at him, but I couldn't tell if he
- 6:56Speaker 2: had actually stopped or if he just kept going. My
- 6:59Speaker 2: assumption was that he just stopped right there, because I
- 7:01Speaker 2: just immediately lost visibility on him. So I decided against
- 7:04Speaker 2: the grunt, you know, because I didn't want to grunt
- 7:06Speaker 2: with him still right there at sixty yards. And eventually,
- 7:10Speaker 2: after two minutes of just kind of glassing up into
- 7:12Speaker 2: that thicket, I caught a little flicker of movement and
- 7:14Speaker 2: it was him just browsing. He came down hit that
- 7:18Speaker 2: old logging road. It was going to come right down
- 7:21Speaker 2: the pipe at about twenty yards, but he picked up
- 7:24Speaker 2: our grounds and just kind of bird dogged around a
- 7:26Speaker 2: little bit and ended up kind of skirting further to
- 7:31Speaker 2: the north, and I had to thread the needle through
- 7:33Speaker 2: a couple of trees that kind of formed a little
- 7:35Speaker 2: v and got lucky, made a great shot, and you know,
- 7:39Speaker 2: he went tearing off this ridge, and I knew he
- 7:42Speaker 2: was headed towards some like pretty rugged steep country. You know,
- 7:46Speaker 2: big Boulder Field probably drops about one hundred and fifty
- 7:49Speaker 2: feet in elevation pretty quick. I mean, it's it's definitely
- 7:52Speaker 2: a big time bluff country. And you know, it was
- 7:56Speaker 2: so windy that I didn't hear crash or anything, so
- 7:58Speaker 2: I'm like, hopefully he didn't make it to that, and
- 8:03Speaker 2: I was wrong. Get down look at the arrow. Great
- 8:06Speaker 2: Blood felt really confident in the shot, was able to
- 8:09Speaker 2: watch the footage back, so it felt good enough to
- 8:11Speaker 2: just like pick up the trail right away. And he
- 8:14Speaker 2: only went about forty yards. But as we're you know,
- 8:17Speaker 2: getting to this this bowler field, you could see where
- 8:20Speaker 2: he started to stumble.
- 8:21Speaker 1: He actually blew through like a rock bog.
- 8:23Speaker 2: They were just like rotten wooden and blood kind of
- 8:25Speaker 2: like just scattered everywhere. And sure enough that he was
- 8:29Speaker 2: like tucked in between two like rock bowlers. And we
- 8:32Speaker 2: actually even had to tie pair cord to him to like,
- 8:35Speaker 2: you know, make sure he didn't slide down the hill.
- 8:40Speaker 2: But as soon as I picked up his rack, like, man,
- 8:42Speaker 2: where's this G two? Like he sure looked like a
- 8:45Speaker 2: ten pointer when I was looking at him, And sure enough,
- 8:49Speaker 2: he had clean broke that G two off right at
- 8:51Speaker 2: the base. I mean just like even took out part
- 8:54Speaker 2: of the beam. And we probably spent an hour and
- 8:58Speaker 2: a half two hours. We killed flashlight batteries, did the
- 9:01Speaker 2: whole thing, and finally were able to recover that time.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Like literally on the last pass, I was just coming
- 9:07Speaker 2: to terms with, well, he's now a nine pointer.
- 9:09Speaker 1: But uh, it was cool man. It was a super
- 9:12Speaker 1: fun hunt. So yeah, that is awesome. Yeah, Sunday Sunday
- 9:16Speaker 1: seemed like there was pretty good activity. Uh here in Illinois.
- 9:18Speaker 1: The wind died, you know, within that last little call
- 9:21Speaker 1: a thirty minutes or so, but it was it was
- 9:23Speaker 1: Hollan and I was thinking the same thing. I was like,
- 9:25Speaker 1: I can't I'm not going to hear him at all. Yeah, definitely. Yeah, No,
- 9:31Speaker 1: that's that's super cool man. Congratulations and I that's that's
- 9:34Speaker 1: a really fun and exciting time and probably a good
- 9:35Speaker 1: lesson if you're feeling discouraged, just go out and hunt.
- 9:39Speaker 1: So you went and looked for the hot sign, you
- 9:41Speaker 1: set up on it and uh and it worked with
- 9:43Speaker 1: great success. You didn't have a bunch of intel to
- 9:46Speaker 1: say this is where I needed to be other than
- 9:48Speaker 1: your gut. I mean that's a that's a good word
- 9:50Speaker 1: of encouragement, especially as we get deeper into this time
- 9:52Speaker 1: of year. So looking looking here out the next week
- 9:55Speaker 1: or so, you already filled you know, archery tag in Wisconsin.
- 9:59Speaker 1: What would you you tell someone to pay really close
- 10:01Speaker 1: attention to over the over the next seven days, whether
- 10:04Speaker 1: it's specific sign, food, source, train, feature, tactic, what kind
- 10:09Speaker 1: of jumps out to you for the next seven days.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Yeah, man, I mean look it into like October twenty
- 10:14Speaker 2: nine through those first couple days in November's that's like
- 10:17Speaker 2: my favorite time to hunt, especially as a public land guy.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Like that twenty nine thirty thirty, first those last few
- 10:23Speaker 2: days of October right before November, you can kind of
- 10:27Speaker 2: beat the public land craze of everyone that saved their
- 10:29Speaker 2: vacation for you know, the first few days in November.
- 10:32Speaker 2: So I always look like index on that, and I'll
- 10:35Speaker 2: kind of, you know, build my strategy around hunting pressure.
- 10:38Speaker 2: That way, I'm going to be in the woods for
- 10:40Speaker 2: those days, you know, pretty much regardless of weather conditions.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Unless it's just crazy rainy, that'd be about the only
- 10:47Speaker 2: thing that would keep me out. But even with that,
- 10:50Speaker 2: I did look and there it looks like there is
- 10:51Speaker 2: some rain in the forecast. I would definitely be keen
- 10:54Speaker 2: off that rain ending and getting out there right after.
- 10:56Speaker 2: I always like hitting scrapes that those last couple of
- 10:59Speaker 2: days of October and even into November, you know, those
- 11:04Speaker 2: first few days I feel like of November are still
- 11:06Speaker 2: pretty good scrape hunting days too.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's great advice. Are you you know you
- 11:13Speaker 1: had your grunk call with you on the nineteenth. Is
- 11:15Speaker 1: that something that you're not leaving home without? Or are
- 11:17Speaker 1: you bringing rattling antlers or where do you stand all
- 11:21Speaker 1: that for this time of year. Yeah, I'll bring them both.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I'll definitely have my drunk call, Definitely bring my rattling
- 11:27Speaker 2: antlers on public. I'm not above the blind rattling sequence
- 11:32Speaker 2: on my private pieces. I'm a little bit more conservative
- 11:36Speaker 2: with my calling tactics. But the way that I look
- 11:39Speaker 2: at You know, my public land strategy is I'm a
- 11:42Speaker 2: lot more vocal, I'm a lot more aggressive because I
- 11:44Speaker 2: feel like if I burned that spot out, there's nothing
- 11:46Speaker 2: telling that, Like the guy can't come in behind me
- 11:48Speaker 2: and do the same thing. So I'd rather kind of
- 11:51Speaker 2: take control of that situation and at least try it.
- 11:55Speaker 2: I've had some good luck doing that, and I just
- 11:58Speaker 2: think it's fun. It's always so well man. When you
- 12:00Speaker 2: get a buck coming into like either a grunt caller
- 12:03Speaker 2: or rattling sequence, it's like my favorite time.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Of year to do it. Yeah, that's super cool. Now
- 12:10Speaker 1: you mentioned something I think that's want to I want
- 12:12Speaker 1: your reasoning behind this, because I think this is a
- 12:14Speaker 1: mistake that a lot of people could do. You mentioned,
- 12:16Speaker 1: you know he was sixty yards away and you thought
- 12:19Speaker 1: he was standing still and you didn't want to grunt.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Why is that? And I guess what's a hard rule
- 12:24Speaker 1: for you? When it comes to grunting. When you see it,
- 12:26Speaker 1: people get excited, right, They're like, I need anything to
- 12:28Speaker 1: get him to come another thirty year yards closer. What
- 12:30Speaker 1: can I do? Yeah?
- 12:32Speaker 2: I much prefer to grunt to a dear that I
- 12:35Speaker 2: can tell that he's moving because it's just like, you know,
- 12:38Speaker 2: picture yourself walking through the woods. If you're walking, you're
- 12:41Speaker 2: hearing your footfalls and like the crunch of the leaves
- 12:43Speaker 2: and all that stuff, and you hear that first sound
- 12:46Speaker 2: and it's enough to stop you and you're kind of
- 12:48Speaker 2: like trying to pinpoint that exact location Versus if he's
- 12:52Speaker 2: sitting there stationary at sixty yards just browsing, he's still
- 12:56Speaker 2: kind of.
- 12:56Speaker 1: In that buffer. You know.
- 12:57Speaker 2: I'd almost prefer to be like, you know, seventy to
- 13:00Speaker 2: one hundred. It seems to be like a sweet spot
- 13:02Speaker 2: of grunt thing. Get too close, I feel like they
- 13:05Speaker 2: can pinpoint it a little bit better. But I do
- 13:07Speaker 2: like when they're moving for that initial contact run because
- 13:10Speaker 2: it kind of like you'll you'll stop them in their
- 13:13Speaker 2: tracks and they're kind of like, what was that, And
- 13:14Speaker 2: then I'll just gauge their body language. In an ideal scenario,
- 13:19Speaker 2: they'll start coming without having that location pinpointed. There are
- 13:22Speaker 2: times where you'll have to do that follow up grunt
- 13:24Speaker 2: when they are actually stationary, and that is when they
- 13:27Speaker 2: do pinpoint you, and that's when they can come in
- 13:30Speaker 2: downwind or you know, do something a little bit funky
- 13:32Speaker 2: but you just got to be prepared for that. You
- 13:35Speaker 2: also got to kind of vision envision your shooting lanes
- 13:37Speaker 2: and assume that that year is going to come in
- 13:38Speaker 2: downwind and uh and kind of plan accordingly there.
- 13:43Speaker 1: I like that. I like it well so in the
- 13:46Speaker 1: next seven days many people's favorite seven day stretch here
- 13:50Speaker 1: that we're getting to on a scale one to ten,
- 13:52Speaker 1: ten being this might be the very best week of
- 13:54Speaker 1: the year for activity and opportunity, one being the worst
- 13:57Speaker 1: week of the year.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Where do you put it from one to ten? Man,
- 14:02Speaker 2: I am the eternal optimist. I'm actually going to go ten.
- 14:05Speaker 1: It is you know, you're you're looking.
- 14:08Speaker 2: It's it's like this is the week we've all been
- 14:10Speaker 2: waiting for, right you know, it's late October, early November.
- 14:14Speaker 2: I just did a quick look at the forecast. It
- 14:16Speaker 2: looks like Camp's here and Wisconsin are going to be
- 14:18Speaker 2: in the fifties. There is some pre sip kind of
- 14:21Speaker 2: in the mix a little bit. But man, I would
- 14:22Speaker 2: be thinking about that only to my advantage getting out
- 14:25Speaker 2: hitting those scrapes after that raining blows out, you know,
- 14:29Speaker 2: hunting mornings, hunting at evenings. I wouldn't really be worried
- 14:32Speaker 2: about you know, getting in there in the in the
- 14:34Speaker 2: dark in the morning.
- 14:35Speaker 1: I think that's something that people should be thinking about.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Time on stand.
- 14:38Speaker 2: You just got to do it right now, so I
- 14:40Speaker 2: would be going into it with eyes wide open.
- 14:43Speaker 1: I love it, man. Well, good luck in Kansas. Congratulations
- 14:46Speaker 1: once again, what a sweet start the season, and I'm
- 14:50Speaker 1: wishing you the best.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Thanks man, I appreciate it all right.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Next up on the line, we have Thomas Milsna with
- 14:56Speaker 1: Untamed Ambition and you just shot a buck.
- 14:59Speaker 3: How's the fa feels pretty good? You know those emotions
- 15:03Speaker 3: that come with filling your tag. Especially me, this is
- 15:07Speaker 3: kind of the end of my hunting season when I
- 15:09Speaker 3: fill my home state Wisconsin tag. You know, I do
- 15:11Speaker 3: my Western hunts early in the fall and then I
- 15:14Speaker 3: I dedicate the rest of my time. However long it
- 15:16Speaker 3: takes two hunting white tails here in Wisconsin, so you know,
- 15:21Speaker 3: it's a little surreal but also kind of sad.
- 15:24Speaker 4: Like we were talking about, you know, I look at
- 15:27Speaker 4: my cell.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Cam pictures in the morning, and I only run a
- 15:29Speaker 3: few cell cams as like a sample or like temp
- 15:32Speaker 3: check what's going on in the property. But I you know,
- 15:34Speaker 3: every morning I open it up and I look and
- 15:37Speaker 3: scroll through and see what happened, and I'm like, you know,
- 15:40Speaker 3: I no longer get that excitement of this deer showing
- 15:43Speaker 3: up on camera.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:45Speaker 3: So, but at the same time, I'm sitting here looking
- 15:47Speaker 3: at him, so I have my hands on him. So
- 15:49Speaker 3: you know, it's that emotional rollercoaster of hunting that you know,
- 15:53Speaker 3: just kind of does this the whole time.
- 15:54Speaker 4: Yeah, but no, it feels good. It feels really good.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Yeah. No, that's awesome. So we you were on the
- 15:59Speaker 1: back forty mini series earlier this year, so hopefully people
- 16:01Speaker 1: are familiar with some of your ideologies as we you know,
- 16:04Speaker 1: burned through eight different burning questions lad enough in the season.
- 16:07Speaker 1: But what was your strategy and how did this come together?
- 16:12Speaker 1: Because I know it was a morning hunt you sent me.
- 16:14Speaker 1: When you sent me the video of the of his
- 16:17Speaker 1: breath coming out, I was like, that's one hundred percent
- 16:19Speaker 1: of the morning And so tell me, tell me about
- 16:22Speaker 1: how you were able to put this together. Yeah.
- 16:24Speaker 3: So this year, you know, we're coming into the pre
- 16:27Speaker 3: rut time right now, right or like that early seeking
- 16:30Speaker 3: chasing phase, and this year was quite a home body
- 16:33Speaker 3: throughout the year. Early in the season, I was after
- 16:36Speaker 3: a different buck at a different number one target book.
- 16:39Speaker 3: This was my number two Plan B. Like, man, I
- 16:42Speaker 3: don't know if I want to see him get another
- 16:44Speaker 3: year because he's got so much going on.
- 16:45Speaker 4: But at the same time.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Everybody in the entire area wants to kill him, and
- 16:50Speaker 3: I can't hold that against them. But I had some
- 16:53Speaker 3: really good encounters with my target book early in the
- 16:55Speaker 3: year and made a big mistake on him, and then
- 16:59Speaker 3: I kind of shifted. And the reason I shifted early
- 17:02Speaker 3: I talked about how I usually shift to my Plan
- 17:04Speaker 3: B buck if I don't think I can kill Plan
- 17:06Speaker 3: A by Halloween. This is a week ahead of schedule
- 17:09Speaker 3: because this particular buck was spending a lot of time
- 17:12Speaker 3: in the most huntable area I thought was right next
- 17:15Speaker 3: to our hunting cabin on our property, and all my
- 17:17Speaker 3: cousins that come and hunt the property are going to
- 17:19Speaker 3: be showing up here really soon.
- 17:20Speaker 4: And then you know that added.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Pressure in that area is absolutely going to alter the
- 17:26Speaker 3: deer behavior. And then I just don't know if my
- 17:28Speaker 3: intel is going to be accurate. Right anytime you had pressure,
- 17:32Speaker 3: you know these theories that come up with on what
- 17:34Speaker 3: de you're doing or why they're doing it.
- 17:36Speaker 4: It's all subject to change.
- 17:38Speaker 3: So the main thing that I was looking at with
- 17:40Speaker 3: this buck in particular, this area is right next to
- 17:45Speaker 3: a really good betting area. It's a really good layered
- 17:48Speaker 3: betting area. Where I'm hunting specifically is the doe betting area.
- 17:53Speaker 3: The buck's bed in the general vicinity, but a little
- 17:56Speaker 3: bit deeper in this pocket. And this pocket is actually
- 18:00Speaker 3: backed right up against our farm, a really active dairy farm,
- 18:05Speaker 3: and it offers these bucks super secure cover even though
- 18:09Speaker 3: it's close to the farm. You know, I always talk
- 18:11Speaker 3: about how topography is the greatest form of cover. This
- 18:14Speaker 3: actually backs right up to a giant earthen built manure pit,
- 18:17Speaker 3: right so it's like a man made damn. Essentially, it's
- 18:21Speaker 3: a forty foot mound of dirt from their perspective, and
- 18:26Speaker 3: that's that snuffles out and covers up a lot of
- 18:28Speaker 3: the noise from the farm. It can be kind of
- 18:30Speaker 3: deceiving because when you hunting that area at an elevation,
- 18:33Speaker 3: you're looking at more of the farm, But when you're
- 18:35Speaker 3: down at the deer's elevation, then a lot of that
- 18:38Speaker 3: stuff is mitigated. So these bucks bed in this tight
- 18:41Speaker 3: little pocket. The dose bed on both sides of it.
- 18:44Speaker 4: There's food. I've got a couple of food plots.
- 18:46Speaker 3: In the valley, and then there's obviously egg fields and
- 18:48Speaker 3: stuff in the area that they kind of flow to
- 18:50Speaker 3: and from. And my strategy in the spot. I've actually
- 18:54Speaker 3: kind of started hunting the spot a little bit more
- 18:55Speaker 3: a couple of years ago, and we went in and
- 18:57Speaker 3: did some habitat improvements, did some select cutting, and then
- 19:00Speaker 3: TSI and thinned it out to create more forage value
- 19:04Speaker 3: and more cover with it. But I went in there
- 19:08Speaker 3: about I don't know, probably fifteen days ago or so,
- 19:13Speaker 3: basically right after I screwed up on my initial target book,
- 19:16Speaker 3: because I was really confident that I was going to
- 19:18Speaker 3: take out earlier in the season, which I should have
- 19:20Speaker 3: if I didn't fail to execute. But I went in
- 19:23Speaker 3: there that same day that I screwed up, or actually
- 19:27Speaker 3: it was the next day after I confirmed one hundred
- 19:29Speaker 3: percent that the deer was alive and I was trying
- 19:32Speaker 3: to get ahead of him, and this is an area
- 19:33Speaker 3: that I anticipated him shifting into from previous years of data,
- 19:37Speaker 3: and I also knew that this buck was in the
- 19:39Speaker 3: area and figured I would cross paths with them at
- 19:41Speaker 3: some point. But I went into the fringe of this
- 19:43Speaker 3: dough betting area and looked around. There's always a primary
- 19:47Speaker 3: scrape in there. You know, those bucks transition into the
- 19:50Speaker 3: betting area, they checked that scrape or they come out
- 19:52Speaker 3: and they're checking what the does are doing, what does
- 19:54Speaker 3: are in the area, and whatnot. So I went in
- 19:56Speaker 3: looked for a scrape, found one, a couple of them actually,
- 20:00Speaker 3: But the problem is there's not a lot of good
- 20:01Speaker 3: spots to set up in there to hunt.
- 20:05Speaker 4: There's not a lot of cover.
- 20:06Speaker 3: The trees that are standing in there are you know,
- 20:08Speaker 3: for so long it was a close canopy that they're
- 20:10Speaker 3: all telephone poles, right, So finding the right spot to hunt,
- 20:15Speaker 3: the right wind direction, all those things come into play.
- 20:18Speaker 3: And ultimately the tree that I selected based on the
- 20:20Speaker 3: wind direction to hunt that didn't put me in a
- 20:23Speaker 3: good position to make any shot without clearing some massive
- 20:26Speaker 3: shooting lanes. And I did not want to do that
- 20:28Speaker 3: that close to betting and go in there and alter it.
- 20:30Speaker 3: So what I did was I went, I broke the
- 20:32Speaker 3: licking branches off of these other two scrapes, and I
- 20:34Speaker 3: added a mock scrape in a previous shooting lane that
- 20:38Speaker 3: I had maintained there through a cell camera up over
- 20:40Speaker 3: it and got out of there, and a couple days
- 20:44Speaker 3: later this buck showed up, and then basically every four
- 20:47Speaker 3: or five days he's been in there, and I go
- 20:50Speaker 3: back and look at the data. You know, I like
- 20:51Speaker 3: to talk about those four key elements wind, pressure, food,
- 20:54Speaker 3: and timing. Wind is king, wind is always king, at
- 20:56Speaker 3: least for me, where I hunt high pressure dear. Everything
- 20:59Speaker 3: has to do the wind, how they move, where they
- 21:01Speaker 3: bed all this stuff, and the higher the pressure is,
- 21:03Speaker 3: the more they use the wind. So when I looked
- 21:06Speaker 3: at the trail cameray or the weather history and reference
- 21:10Speaker 3: the trail camera data, every time that buck was there,
- 21:14Speaker 3: there was either no wind or there was an east wind,
- 21:17Speaker 3: which plays right into the theories I also put together
- 21:19Speaker 3: without bucks, you know, they like that wind coming from
- 21:21Speaker 3: a potential threat. That's why they like to bed with
- 21:24Speaker 3: their wind at their back, and then they get the
- 21:25Speaker 3: thermals rising up in their face and the east wind
- 21:29Speaker 3: would have been pushing from the farm into this betting area.
- 21:32Speaker 3: And the theory behind that, or at least what makes
- 21:35Speaker 3: sense to me, is that those bucks are there on
- 21:37Speaker 3: that wind because then they they can surveil what's coming
- 21:41Speaker 3: from the farm. They hear all that noise all the time,
- 21:43Speaker 3: but how do they know if that noise is just noise,
- 21:45Speaker 3: or if it's noise associated with a threat that's coming
- 21:49Speaker 3: towards them or whatnot. Right when they have that wind,
- 21:51Speaker 3: then they can smell all the things that are going
- 21:53Speaker 3: on and decipher that. And you know, the way that
- 21:56Speaker 3: their nose and their brain works is way different from ours, right,
- 21:59Speaker 3: So however they figure that out, I don't know. But
- 22:01Speaker 3: and it wasn't like he was there every single time
- 22:04Speaker 3: there was an east wind, but he was only ever
- 22:06Speaker 3: there on an east wind or no win.
- 22:20Speaker 4: So I went back to the farm.
- 22:22Speaker 3: This last Thursday night or Thursday afternoon, checked a handful
- 22:26Speaker 3: of cameras on the fringes of this area, trying to
- 22:29Speaker 3: get a game plan put together, knowing that we had
- 22:32Speaker 3: this cold front and things we're going to be picking
- 22:34Speaker 3: up here. And I always try to scout from the
- 22:36Speaker 3: outside D hunt from the outside D. I don't want
- 22:38Speaker 3: to go any deeper than I have to, even though
- 22:39Speaker 3: I knew a couple of spots. I'm like, I think
- 22:41Speaker 3: I can get in there and kill this deer, but
- 22:44Speaker 3: it's high risk, and I didn't know if it was
- 22:47Speaker 3: worth the risk that early in the season, because if
- 22:50Speaker 3: you don't have the encountery need, or he gets by
- 22:52Speaker 3: you and busts you, he's not going to be back
- 22:54Speaker 3: there again.
- 22:54Speaker 4: Just too much pressure. It's one and done. This time
- 22:56Speaker 4: you're with these bucks.
- 22:58Speaker 3: So I went back on third scouted from the outside,
- 23:01Speaker 3: checked these cameras, and then I slipped down and did
- 23:04Speaker 3: an observation sit scanned food plot, saw some bucks, not
- 23:07Speaker 3: the buck I was looking for, but the whole time
- 23:08Speaker 3: I could hear a buck grunting, and obviously I don't
- 23:12Speaker 3: know if it was him, but he was making this
- 23:14Speaker 3: like really aggressive like huffing, almost like a gorilla noise,
- 23:18Speaker 3: like if you can envision that noise that the gorillas make,
- 23:21Speaker 3: like the huffing.
- 23:22Speaker 4: He would drunt and he would make that noise.
- 23:24Speaker 3: I heard it three or four different times throughout the evening,
- 23:27Speaker 3: and I slipped back out of that valley and drove
- 23:31Speaker 3: all the way home. Had smaller stuff going on, had
- 23:33Speaker 3: to get all wrapped up, got up at two thirty
- 23:36Speaker 3: in the morning, got some stuff ready, drove all the
- 23:38Speaker 3: way back down, and I was a little bit late
- 23:40Speaker 3: getting down there, but I got in and I hung
- 23:44Speaker 3: the stand the day I hung the cell camera, so
- 23:46Speaker 3: I was already set up for it, which saved me
- 23:48Speaker 3: a little bit.
- 23:48Speaker 4: It's easy access.
- 23:49Speaker 3: Slipped in there, got in the stand, and sure enough,
- 23:53Speaker 3: right away in the morning start seeing movement down the valley.
- 23:56Speaker 3: Mostly I can look down behind me and there's some
- 23:59Speaker 3: deer moving around. And then I had three doughs work
- 24:02Speaker 3: up into this betting area. And that's what makes me
- 24:04Speaker 3: really nervous. Well, there's two issues with that. Is One,
- 24:07Speaker 3: usually when I hunt this close to betting, I commit
- 24:09Speaker 3: to an all day sit because if these deer come
- 24:12Speaker 3: in and bed down close to me, I don't want
- 24:13Speaker 3: to bump them because if I bump them, I burn
- 24:16Speaker 3: a pressure credit. In that area, you can only bump
- 24:18Speaker 3: them a couple times. And then that betting area is
- 24:20Speaker 3: not nearly as secure to them. They're not there, the
- 24:23Speaker 3: bucks aren't there. So I was really nervous. But I
- 24:25Speaker 3: had prior obligations that afternoon, so I couldn't commit to
- 24:28Speaker 3: an all day sit, so I was really kind of
- 24:30Speaker 3: going for it in the spot right And then on
- 24:32Speaker 3: top of it, it's very close to our cabin, so
- 24:34Speaker 3: these guys are showing up to hunt, So it's going
- 24:35Speaker 3: to change the dynamic in that valley anyway. But these
- 24:38Speaker 3: dos come in. There's three generations. There was a dough faon,
- 24:42Speaker 3: last year's dough faon, and the old nanny dough, and
- 24:45Speaker 3: you know, just the experience that comes with age was
- 24:50Speaker 3: very apparent. The little dough comes in and instantly like
- 24:53Speaker 3: beds down like five feet from the base of my
- 24:54Speaker 3: tree behind me. The other dough comes in and she's
- 24:57Speaker 3: kind of checking things out a little bit more apprehensive,
- 25:00Speaker 3: doesn't really catch on. The big dough comes in and
- 25:02Speaker 3: she is just like scanning every single nooking cranny, every tree,
- 25:05Speaker 3: and she picked me out immediately.
- 25:07Speaker 4: Something's different. Okay, it's not moving. I think we're okay.
- 25:11Speaker 3: You know, that's after a fifteen minute stare down and
- 25:14Speaker 3: I strategically normally I hang my pack low so I
- 25:17Speaker 3: can reach it when I'm sitting, but in this situation,
- 25:20Speaker 3: I hung it off my bow hanger so that I
- 25:22Speaker 3: broke up my background a little bit more up in
- 25:24Speaker 3: the tree and kind of gave me some cover. So ultimately,
- 25:27Speaker 3: these dos they're hanging out in there, and the little
- 25:30Speaker 3: one's bedded. The next one up in age was just
- 25:35Speaker 3: betted down, and then the nanny was still kind of
- 25:38Speaker 3: milling around browsing, and I hear this like gorilla huffing again,
- 25:44Speaker 3: you know, and then the scrunt, and I'm like, oh,
- 25:46Speaker 3: you know, in my brain, I already painted the picture.
- 25:48Speaker 4: That that's got to be this buck, right, So I'm like, okay.
- 25:51Speaker 3: I'm looking, looking, looking, And I'd seen a couple other
- 25:53Speaker 3: bucks milling around, so I knew they were on their feet.
- 25:55Speaker 3: But I had to make the decision at that point,
- 25:57Speaker 3: do I pull up my bino's and risk bumping these
- 26:00Speaker 3: do or do I sit still longer? And you know,
- 26:04Speaker 3: that internal debate lasted about thirty seconds, and I was like, well,
- 26:07Speaker 3: if I'm gonna if these doughs are gonna bust me,
- 26:09Speaker 3: which inevitably they're going to as soon as I reached
- 26:11Speaker 3: for my bow, it's easy to make a move on
- 26:13Speaker 3: one single deer, just washing what they're doing, moving when
- 26:16Speaker 3: they move stuff like that. But I knew I was
- 26:18Speaker 3: gonna get busted, so I had to do it sooner
- 26:19Speaker 3: rather than later.
- 26:21Speaker 4: The wind was good.
- 26:22Speaker 3: These doughs weren't gonna smell me unless they circled up
- 26:24Speaker 3: around me. And where this buck was coming from. He
- 26:26Speaker 3: wasn't gonnamell me until he circled down.
- 26:28Speaker 4: So I brought up my.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Bios in just that subtle movement, you know, I went
- 26:34Speaker 3: like this, but I wasn't looking through my binos. I'm
- 26:36Speaker 3: looking at this dough and right away she's just on me.
- 26:39Speaker 3: So I actually what I did is I just put
- 26:41Speaker 3: my hand down behind the tree and I just started
- 26:42Speaker 3: flagging my hand to make her nervous. And they kind
- 26:46Speaker 3: of spooked, like really fast, and they ran about halfway
- 26:49Speaker 3: down the hill and blew a couple.
- 26:50Speaker 4: Of times, and then they left. And the buck then
- 26:53Speaker 4: I had my.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Binyls on and I'm watching him and he's, you know,
- 26:55Speaker 3: he's ears up on alert, just looking trying to figure
- 26:58Speaker 3: it out. But he can't smell me. And these deer
- 27:01Speaker 3: are so switched on on this farm. They're you know,
- 27:04Speaker 3: when I was watching that observation plot the night before,
- 27:06Speaker 3: I had two or three different times deer would blow
- 27:08Speaker 3: out of the plot and blow and they were spooked
- 27:10Speaker 3: by other deer coming from like the creek bottom and stuff,
- 27:13Speaker 3: so on edge.
- 27:13Speaker 4: They're always on edge. And anyway, so this buck, you know,
- 27:17Speaker 4: it didn't.
- 27:17Speaker 3: Deter him, It just put him on high alert, and
- 27:20Speaker 3: you know, from the time I saw him to the
- 27:21Speaker 3: time he got into bow range was probably eight or
- 27:24Speaker 3: ten minutes. You know, mature bucks do that, right, they stand,
- 27:27Speaker 3: They just surveil the situation for a long time, licking
- 27:30Speaker 3: their nose, smelling the air, all that stuff. So he
- 27:32Speaker 3: kind of worked his way in and I didn't even
- 27:34Speaker 3: grab my bow. It was one of the few times
- 27:37Speaker 3: I'm a I'm a shoot first, video second kind of guy.
- 27:40Speaker 4: M but I and I had really only video for.
- 27:44Speaker 3: My own personal you know, like challenge and the satisfaction
- 27:48Speaker 3: of like showing that. I mean, I sent you the video,
- 27:49Speaker 3: and that's really all I do is show it to
- 27:51Speaker 3: like close friends most of the time, and and use
- 27:54Speaker 3: it for educational purposes for my clients. I was like, Okay,
- 27:57Speaker 3: I'm just gonna let him come in. I'm in a
- 27:58Speaker 3: really good situation. He's going to commit to that. It
- 28:00Speaker 3: was like a dialed in, fine tuned situation, Like it's
- 28:04Speaker 3: not like the panic, where do I think he's going
- 28:06Speaker 3: to be.
- 28:06Speaker 4: So I videoed and then you know, grab my bow.
- 28:09Speaker 3: When I was ready to take the shot, and twenty
- 28:11Speaker 3: five yards perfect shot. He didn't know what hit him.
- 28:14Speaker 3: I didn't have to stop him. He wasn't on alert.
- 28:16Speaker 3: He ran thirty yards and kind of settled in a
- 28:19Speaker 3: little bit and just tipped over and.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Like, okay, that's awesome. Okay, it's over right.
- 28:24Speaker 3: H And then you know that's when the flood of
- 28:26Speaker 3: emotions really hit. And for me, I don't really get
- 28:28Speaker 3: buck fever until after. You know, it's like you just
- 28:31Speaker 3: try to Okay, it's that deer.
- 28:33Speaker 4: I know that's a deer.
- 28:34Speaker 3: I want to shoot now, and focused on watching his
- 28:36Speaker 3: eyes and moving when he's not looking at me, doing
- 28:38Speaker 3: all the things I need to and I double checked
- 28:41Speaker 3: my range, you know. I was just like kind of
- 28:42Speaker 3: working through everything like I've got time, take my time.
- 28:45Speaker 4: All this stuff came and you just just played out perfectly.
- 28:48Speaker 1: So man, that is awesome. If the footage is really
- 28:50Speaker 1: sick and so real quick. So October twenty ninth to
- 28:56Speaker 1: November fifth, what is the most important thing for people
- 29:01Speaker 1: to pay attention to if they are maybe they're hunting
- 29:04Speaker 1: this upcoming weekend, maybe they're starting their vocation, there was
- 29:07Speaker 1: one thing for these people to focus in on. Whether
- 29:10Speaker 1: it's a speed scout, whether it's an observation sit, whether
- 29:12Speaker 1: it's a food source, a terrain feature. What is the
- 29:15Speaker 1: single most important thing right now as things start to
- 29:18Speaker 1: ramp up even more.
- 29:20Speaker 3: There's two strategies I would employ the same, which is
- 29:24Speaker 3: what I was in the process of doing. You know,
- 29:27Speaker 3: this buck and my other main target book their territories
- 29:31Speaker 3: overlap quite a bit, so I was still pursuing my
- 29:34Speaker 3: number one buck, but number two just happened to kind
- 29:36Speaker 3: of fall right on top of there, which worked out
- 29:38Speaker 3: really well for me. But that main strategy, I'm really
- 29:42Speaker 3: looking at those primary scrapes. Scrapes next to doe betting
- 29:45Speaker 3: areas are going to be your best friend, and you
- 29:48Speaker 3: have to get out in scout. You absolutely have to
- 29:50Speaker 3: get out in scout. You know, if your camera is
- 29:52Speaker 3: in the right spot, then you know do because you're
- 29:56Speaker 3: getting the activity on it right. But if you're not
- 29:58Speaker 3: getting the activity you want, case in point what I
- 30:00Speaker 3: did where I destroyed a couple of those scrapes and
- 30:03Speaker 3: hunt a camera over one scrape in this area. All
- 30:06Speaker 3: the bucks coming and going from this one spot, we're
- 30:08Speaker 3: checking that scrape. You know, are they checking it every
- 30:10Speaker 3: time they walk through the area. Absolutely not, but they
- 30:13Speaker 3: are occasionally checking it, and that gives you that temp check.
- 30:15Speaker 3: But if you don't go out and scout, you're gonna
- 30:17Speaker 3: have a problem. And actually, after I killed this buck,
- 30:18Speaker 3: the next morning, I went out and I checked a
- 30:20Speaker 3: couple of other cameras a little bit deeper that I
- 30:22Speaker 3: wouldn't have checked. And you know, if I didn't see
- 30:24Speaker 3: him on Friday morning, then I would have went and
- 30:27Speaker 3: slipped into these spots at the timing I thought would
- 30:29Speaker 3: be the least, you know, invasive, like when deer aren't
- 30:33Speaker 3: going to be there. Maybe it's in the middle of
- 30:34Speaker 3: the night, maybe it's in the middle of the day,
- 30:36Speaker 3: you know, just certain wind direction, whatever it might be.
- 30:38Speaker 3: But I really want to make sure I'm getting the
- 30:40Speaker 3: intel off these scrapes because they're all these communication hubs,
- 30:42Speaker 3: and these bucks right now are moving all over the place,
- 30:44Speaker 3: and they're they're leaving their signature, they're communicating, they're doing
- 30:47Speaker 3: all these things with these other other deer in mind.
- 30:50Speaker 3: But ultimately it's you know, what other bucks are in
- 30:54Speaker 3: the area and what does are coming into heat. So
- 30:56Speaker 3: that's the first thing I make sure I'm getting my
- 30:58Speaker 3: intel from those communication hubs. And then the second thing
- 31:03Speaker 3: is I'm looking at my historic data, like you know,
- 31:06Speaker 3: or do that first? Essentially, right, like, where do you
- 31:08Speaker 3: anticipate these bucks being this time of year?
- 31:11Speaker 4: And it's so is so consistent every time.
- 31:16Speaker 3: If if you had a lot of mature buck activity
- 31:18Speaker 3: and a certain pinch point on your property last year
- 31:21Speaker 3: and it's not there this year, it's because something changed
- 31:25Speaker 3: on the landscape, right, pressure went up, food quality went down.
- 31:28Speaker 4: You know, something's changed.
- 31:30Speaker 3: But if those things remain the same, expect that consistent
- 31:33Speaker 3: activity and on our farm, I've got to dialed into
- 31:36Speaker 3: where I know, like this specific betting area is really good.
- 31:39Speaker 3: From the twenty third until about the thirtieth, those bucks
- 31:43Speaker 3: are checking hard in there and at that point most
- 31:45Speaker 3: of those dos, you know, they've already been bred and
- 31:48Speaker 3: then they're kind of moving on. So if you missed
- 31:50Speaker 3: that window of opportunity, then you're looking for the next
- 31:51Speaker 3: betting area, you know, and is that I also understand
- 31:55Speaker 3: that a lot of people don't have acreage where they're
- 31:58Speaker 3: bouncing here and bouncing there right where you Really that
- 32:01Speaker 3: analogy I use all the time is it's like duck
- 32:04Speaker 3: outing now the chimney of your cabin, right, Like, if
- 32:07Speaker 3: the pressure and the food aren't controlled, you've got a
- 32:09Speaker 3: really narrow window opportunity. The same goal is like, if
- 32:11Speaker 3: you don't have you know, a lot of diversity and
- 32:12Speaker 3: food sources, which comes with having a smaller property.
- 32:15Speaker 4: It's a very narrow window. Do you really want to
- 32:17Speaker 4: dial that in?
- 32:18Speaker 3: But you can see on our farm like it's this
- 32:20Speaker 3: week here, it's that week there, you know, and you're
- 32:22Speaker 3: kind of bouncing around and I'll follow the same bucks
- 32:24Speaker 3: from different areas a lot of times.
- 32:26Speaker 1: So for someone that does not, maybe they're hunting a
- 32:28Speaker 1: brand new spot. Maybe they're just struggling and like, man,
- 32:30Speaker 1: something changed my area and this should be good, but
- 32:33Speaker 1: it has not been good. You would say, go in
- 32:37Speaker 1: and strategically, guilt free do some scouting.
- 32:42Speaker 3: I always, you know again, I always encourage scout from
- 32:44Speaker 3: the outside in. So if I'm going out and scouting
- 32:48Speaker 3: mid season, it's not just with reckless abandonment.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Right.
- 32:51Speaker 3: And this is the big thing I see guys make
- 32:53Speaker 3: that mistake is I'm not getting pictures on my trail camera.
- 32:56Speaker 1: Screw it.
- 32:56Speaker 3: I'm just gonna jump on the ATV and go buzz
- 32:58Speaker 3: out there quick. Well, you just screwed up the whole picture, right.
- 33:01Speaker 3: One of these other trail cameras that I just checked
- 33:03Speaker 3: for this buck. When I went in there, there was
- 33:04Speaker 3: another scrape that had opened up a tree.
- 33:07Speaker 4: Broken branch fell off of a tree.
- 33:08Speaker 3: And got snagged down a branch on the way down
- 33:10Speaker 3: and it basically made another liking branch. So there was
- 33:12Speaker 3: two scrapes ten feet apart, so the same thing. I
- 33:15Speaker 3: just broke off that branch and then they you know,
- 33:18Speaker 3: they were using bolt scrapes still, but you just don't
- 33:20Speaker 3: know if the licking branch gets broken off of that
- 33:23Speaker 3: one and the new one opens up. So if you
- 33:25Speaker 3: don't go out and scout, you don't know. So if
- 33:26Speaker 3: you're not getting the intel, go a little bit deeper.
- 33:29Speaker 1: But what I would.
- 33:30Speaker 3: Strongly strongly recommend, you know, and looking at the forecast
- 33:32Speaker 3: at least here southwestern Wisconsin, well, by the time this
- 33:37Speaker 3: comes out, it's gonna be a day after the rain
- 33:39Speaker 3: that's in the forecast, and then after that it looks
- 33:41Speaker 3: pretty consistent. But you know, I'm looking for a rainy
- 33:44Speaker 3: day or a high wind day to do my most
- 33:47Speaker 3: aggressive scouting. And I would take the windy days over
- 33:50Speaker 3: anything because you can really get away with a lot
- 33:52Speaker 3: when the winds moved.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Yeah, most of the time, Yeah, Yeah.
- 33:55Speaker 3: A mutual friend of ours actually just sent me a
- 33:57Speaker 3: text the other day where he was trying to scout
- 33:58Speaker 3: in an area and walked up on a bedded three
- 34:01Speaker 3: year old buck. Right, it was a windier day. They
- 34:03Speaker 3: bed pretty tight, and I see that too. Look for
- 34:06Speaker 3: those windy days, look for those rainy days. If you
- 34:08Speaker 3: don't find those days, then I'm carrying a tree stand
- 34:11Speaker 3: on my back. I'm going out there. I'm scouting my
- 34:14Speaker 3: way in, or if it's a morning, i'm looking at
- 34:16Speaker 3: a map. I'm scouting with what I know, the best
- 34:20Speaker 3: theory I can come up with. I'm gonna start here.
- 34:22Speaker 3: I'm gonna get in this tree before daybreak, and then
- 34:24Speaker 3: I can observe an area. And now I know that
- 34:26Speaker 3: you know that deer went into there, That deer went
- 34:28Speaker 3: into there. I'm gonna move a little bit deeper once
- 34:31Speaker 3: I get down from my stand. And now i'm gonna
- 34:32Speaker 3: you know, I've got a cell cam in my backpack
- 34:34Speaker 3: or regular cam my backpack.
- 34:35Speaker 4: I'm moving in.
- 34:36Speaker 3: I'm scouting fresh sign, Fresh sign, fresh sign. Okay, here's
- 34:40Speaker 3: a primary scrape that cover there. I watch those dos
- 34:42Speaker 3: go into it. I watched that buck push that dough
- 34:44Speaker 3: into it. Here's a scrape on the outside. Boom dropping
- 34:46Speaker 3: that camera and I'm trying to figure out where's in
- 34:48Speaker 3: the best spot to hunt right here, but are with
- 34:50Speaker 3: wind directions to hunt it? And I'm getting out of there,
- 34:53Speaker 3: and I'm looking for that you know, those conditions the
- 34:56Speaker 3: next three to five days, and then I'm you know,
- 34:58Speaker 3: I'm looking for that next and while you're there, move
- 35:01Speaker 3: that stand like this.
- 35:02Speaker 4: It's a big thing.
- 35:03Speaker 3: A lot of it's just the details and the ambition involved, right,
- 35:06Speaker 3: Like I've been there before, Like, ah, I'll just wait,
- 35:08Speaker 3: I'll get confirmation that I get pictures on that camera
- 35:11Speaker 3: before I hang the stand. Well, you're already there, you're
- 35:13Speaker 3: already making a commotion. Or maybe it is one of
- 35:14Speaker 3: those windy days. Pull that stand down, move it to
- 35:17Speaker 3: that tree where you can shoot that scrape so that
- 35:19Speaker 3: when you get that picture.
- 35:20Speaker 4: Of that book, all you have to worry about is
- 35:22Speaker 4: getting there before he gets there the next time around.
- 35:25Speaker 1: Yeah, So this is the reminder, don't be lazy, get
- 35:27Speaker 1: out there and make it happen, but still be calculated,
- 35:30Speaker 1: like to boil it down. That's kind of what I hear.
- 35:33Speaker 3: Absolutely, because we are reaching the climax of the season
- 35:36Speaker 3: very quickly. Right, things are going to peek here and
- 35:40Speaker 3: then we're going to all go into deer depression the
- 35:43Speaker 3: dark short days of winter. So you're either going to
- 35:46Speaker 3: be there and sitting and looking at you know, how
- 35:50Speaker 3: your season panned out, yep, or or you're going to
- 35:53Speaker 3: be wondering what could have been if you would have
- 35:55Speaker 3: made that move?
- 35:56Speaker 1: Right?
- 35:56Speaker 3: How many days you know the stories I've told you,
- 35:58Speaker 3: how many times I've stood at the bottom of that hill,
- 35:59Speaker 3: the tree stand on my back and just went, Man.
- 36:01Speaker 4: It's been a long season. I'm tired.
- 36:04Speaker 3: I should be at home getting stuff done. I should
- 36:06Speaker 3: be spending time with my family. We've already wasted that
- 36:08Speaker 3: much time, and it is. It is a waste if
- 36:11Speaker 3: you don't push a little bit more, right, Yeah, Or
- 36:14Speaker 3: you just don't know.
- 36:14Speaker 4: Because anything can happen at any minute this time of year.
- 36:17Speaker 3: Put yourself in the best situation possible and don't let
- 36:21Speaker 3: any form of laziness.
- 36:23Speaker 5: Hold you back.
- 36:24Speaker 4: You know, it's easy to say that, right, I mean, yeah,
- 36:27Speaker 4: everyone on the.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, I still got to go out there trying
- 36:32Speaker 1: to kill Yeah.
- 36:33Speaker 3: I slept in today, man, I got up and then
- 36:35Speaker 3: I went back to bed.
- 36:36Speaker 1: I was like, I'm good, well, Thomas, congratulations once again.
- 36:41Speaker 1: I appreciate you hopping on here and I think those
- 36:44Speaker 1: are some great words of encouragement and I will have
- 36:47Speaker 1: to stay in touch here and yeah, thank you, sir,
- 36:49Speaker 1: congratulations once again.
- 36:51Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 36:51Speaker 1: Take care all right. Next up on the line, we
- 36:54Speaker 1: have Brett Smith from wild Life Whitetail Land Management Services
- 36:58Speaker 1: calling in from Wisconsin. Sir, I've been torturing every guest
- 37:02Speaker 1: with the trivia question, so we're just gonna rip the
- 37:05Speaker 1: banded off right now. What year was there the record
- 37:10Speaker 1: amount of deer harvested in the state of Wisconsin. I
- 37:14Speaker 1: feel like Wisconsin's kind of a unique state too, because
- 37:17Speaker 1: of what they had done shortly after this time period.
- 37:22Speaker 1: So because there was a pretty big decline in deer
- 37:25Speaker 1: populations based off of a state management practice.
- 37:30Speaker 6: I remember reading this, but like, there's no date that's
- 37:33Speaker 6: even coming remotely close to close to mind, I want
- 37:36Speaker 6: to say it was semi recently, but given what you
- 37:39Speaker 6: just said, maybe I'm wrong. I'm just going to throw
- 37:41Speaker 6: a number out there, but the way off, I'm gonna
- 37:47Speaker 6: say two thousand and fifteen.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Your way off, You're fifteen years off. Two thousand the
- 37:53Speaker 1: year two thousand was the record amount of deer harvested.
- 37:57Speaker 5: Given it away, Okay, yeah.
- 37:59Speaker 1: Yeah, thousand. There was six hundred and eighteen thousand deer
- 38:02Speaker 1: harvested in the state of Wisconsin and the lowest lowest
- 38:05Speaker 1: total on recorded history, which is Wisconsin. That's probably the
- 38:09Speaker 1: richest hunting heritage out of all the states, in my opinion,
- 38:13Speaker 1: was twenty five hundred in the year eighteen ninety seven.
- 38:18Speaker 5: That's insane, dude.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Yeah, So, how's what's the deer? What's been? Like, it's
- 38:22Speaker 1: it's it's getting to fever pitch status here. You know
- 38:25Speaker 1: when this is going live. It's October twenty ninth, and
- 38:29Speaker 1: so this report, here's the twenty ninth to the fifth, Like,
- 38:31Speaker 1: this is arguably one of the weeks everyone has earmarked
- 38:36Speaker 1: for since last year. So where are you at, where's
- 38:38Speaker 1: your head at? What have you been seeing? What's the
- 38:40Speaker 1: game plan?
- 38:40Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll pick that late October over November any day
- 38:42Speaker 6: if I had to be honestly, But you know, if
- 38:45Speaker 6: I had to be honest, like trail cameras you know,
- 38:48Speaker 6: are slow, but we know, like we know these bucks exist.
- 38:51Speaker 5: I had them early season.
- 38:52Speaker 6: It's just time to get out there, so Kentucky farm
- 38:55Speaker 6: I got a real one of my Kentucky farmers. I
- 38:57Speaker 6: got a real, real and solid, like five year old
- 38:59Speaker 6: I'm after. I bought some ground over in like where
- 39:02Speaker 6: I used to live in Kentucky. Got some dang good
- 39:04Speaker 6: deer over there. Got some nighttime photos of some good
- 39:08Speaker 6: bucks in southwest Wisconsin and around home.
- 39:11Speaker 5: You know, we just got some some average bucks around here.
- 39:13Speaker 6: They're around, but like nothing that's gotten me super jacked yet.
- 39:16Speaker 6: But that doesn't mean they're not there. We know from
- 39:18Speaker 6: trail cameras, like you're just not catching everything. So they're there.
- 39:21Speaker 6: They exist.
- 39:21Speaker 5: That's all that really matters to me.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Yeah, so what have you seen an influx of activity
- 39:27Speaker 1: on scrapes? Have you? I mean, what, where's the white
- 39:31Speaker 1: tail psyche right now? Or I guess the buck psyche
- 39:34Speaker 1: in your opinion.
- 39:35Speaker 6: Yeah, the cameras that are still going off for me,
- 39:37Speaker 6: like consistently are those ones in the bedroom, and I'm
- 39:40Speaker 6: monitoring scrapes closest to the bedroom, Like I have mox
- 39:43Speaker 6: scrapes that I've made in food plot scrapes and stuff
- 39:46Speaker 6: like that, exterior.
- 39:47Speaker 5: Ones outside of that bedroom.
- 39:49Speaker 6: But I always talk about that first scrape outside the bedroom,
- 39:51Speaker 6: like that's generally the not the most huntable, but the
- 39:53Speaker 6: one you should probably hunt. Like that's what I'm monitoring
- 39:56Speaker 6: right now. And also in those bedrooms, like it's still
- 39:58Speaker 6: a lot of bedroom activity, at least for me me.
- 40:00Speaker 5: Not a lot of food plot daylight stuff going on.
- 40:03Speaker 5: Not yet.
- 40:05Speaker 1: What if you had to tell someone said, hey, Brett,
- 40:08Speaker 1: I've never shot a wallhanger yet, whatever that is, whatever
- 40:12Speaker 1: that is to whoever is listening to this, no matter
- 40:15Speaker 1: where they're from. And I have October twenty nine to
- 40:18Speaker 1: November fifth, what is the one tactic? What is the
- 40:20Speaker 1: one strategy that is going to have me have legitimate
- 40:24Speaker 1: opportunity versus throwing a dark Do.
- 40:26Speaker 5: You remember the strategy we've talked about in the past.
- 40:29Speaker 1: I remember, I've pretty good memory. But go ahead and
- 40:30Speaker 1: tell everyone.
- 40:31Speaker 5: Guard at your areas of congregation.
- 40:33Speaker 6: That might be a clear cut in your neck of
- 40:34Speaker 6: the woods, and it might be a crop field, it
- 40:36Speaker 6: might be a food plot.
- 40:37Speaker 5: Find the sign.
- 40:37Speaker 6: Along the along the exterior of that food plot or
- 40:40Speaker 6: wherever that area of congregation is. It might take you
- 40:42Speaker 6: two or three tries, but try and follow that back
- 40:44Speaker 6: to your to the betting area that like you're picturing
- 40:47Speaker 6: in your head, and maybe you've never been to this
- 40:49Speaker 6: area before, and maybe you have, but like try and
- 40:51Speaker 6: look at a map even prior and say, I think
- 40:53Speaker 6: the dear, you know, educated guests are probably better here.
- 40:55Speaker 6: So we started the area of congregation, We're gonna find
- 40:57Speaker 6: a little bit of sign and we're start following it
- 40:59Speaker 6: back to the areas that we want to go or
- 41:00Speaker 6: towards that direction of love. Betting, we're gonna start running
- 41:13Speaker 6: within about one hundred hundred and fifty less yards or less,
- 41:17Speaker 6: we're gonna start running into generally double sided rubs. When
- 41:19Speaker 6: I see double sided rubs, like to me, that means
- 41:21Speaker 6: a buck's coming and going. Like he's on the tree
- 41:24Speaker 6: trunk trail, that tree will branch out. We're on that
- 41:26Speaker 6: last trail that heads into the bedroom. Generally I'm paying
- 41:29Speaker 6: attention as I'm walking down that trail. I'm looking for
- 41:32Speaker 6: licking branches, and this time of year, I'm looking for
- 41:33Speaker 6: the scrape closest to his bedroom.
- 41:37Speaker 5: And how do you know where his bedroom is?
- 41:38Speaker 6: One of two ways, it's either condensed rubs of you know,
- 41:42Speaker 6: condensed sign of ten fifteen twelve rubs, or you see
- 41:46Speaker 6: the buck and this time, you're I don't mind bumping
- 41:48Speaker 6: him like, I'll go in there like I'd rather be
- 41:49Speaker 6: sure that he's there. He probably comes back tomorrow, if
- 41:52Speaker 6: not later that day. And I'm setting up on that
- 41:54Speaker 6: first scrape outside the bed off wind when I access
- 41:57Speaker 6: that spot, I'm doing I'm doing it so I'm even
- 42:00Speaker 6: I sent off that trail on parallel paralleling that trail on.
- 42:03Speaker 5: The way in.
- 42:04Speaker 6: That's that's the most like step by step plan that
- 42:07Speaker 6: I that I follow when finding a lot of these books.
- 42:10Speaker 5: Public, private, doesn't matter.
- 42:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's a really good starting point for
- 42:13Speaker 1: someone just to dive in and key in on that,
- 42:15Speaker 1: because there's so much anticipation for this time of year,
- 42:20Speaker 1: and then you know, there's a lot of people that say, hey,
- 42:22Speaker 1: it's it's just luck, right, But there's people that find
- 42:24Speaker 1: success most years. Obviously there's luck involved, but I feel
- 42:27Speaker 1: like that's an awesome foundation for someone to break that
- 42:30Speaker 1: down whatever that is to them, no matter where they're at,
- 42:32Speaker 1: and you.
- 42:33Speaker 6: Might kill them in those areas of congregation this time
- 42:35Speaker 6: year like that, you might not have to go far,
- 42:37Speaker 6: but at least now you have that intel for future
- 42:38Speaker 6: years if you want to go make an early season play,
- 42:40Speaker 6: a late season play.
- 42:41Speaker 5: You understand the pattern, you know where to go.
- 42:43Speaker 1: So as if you can name maybe two food sources
- 42:46Speaker 1: for October twenty nine to the fifth, I don't think
- 42:50Speaker 1: for a lot of the country we'll probably have a
- 42:51Speaker 1: hard frost yet. So with that in mind, what two
- 42:55Speaker 1: food sources. Maybe think of a big Woods food source
- 42:58Speaker 1: and then think of a more country food source that
- 43:01Speaker 1: you favor throughout this period of time.
- 43:03Speaker 5: If I'm hunting the egg country, I'm hunting alfelfa.
- 43:05Speaker 6: And if you plant in food plots maybe clover, chickory,
- 43:07Speaker 6: alfalfa like perennial plots. Man, that's that's the king, and
- 43:10Speaker 6: we all like to get fancy that now that you
- 43:12Speaker 6: need to have that. But if you can find a
- 43:14Speaker 6: good hayfield freshly cut corn this time of year, people
- 43:17Speaker 6: are combining. So if you're in an egg country monitoring that,
- 43:20Speaker 6: I mean, you're gonna see a lot of deer in
- 43:21Speaker 6: either one of those fields. If I'm in if I'm
- 43:24Speaker 6: in the big Woods, this is starting to start.
- 43:27Speaker 7: You know.
- 43:27Speaker 6: If I'm in the big Woods, I'm picturing maybe I'm
- 43:29Speaker 6: a little bit farther north.
- 43:30Speaker 5: Maybe not.
- 43:30Speaker 6: But if I can get on red Oaks and red
- 43:33Speaker 6: okay coins. I'm a big fan of those. As the
- 43:35Speaker 6: season progresses, and I've seen some insane like almost food
- 43:38Speaker 6: plotting activity digging up in the snow as the season
- 43:41Speaker 6: progresses on red oaks. But otherwise you're clearcuts and your
- 43:45Speaker 6: white oaks. Man, let's not overthink it, like you just
- 43:47Speaker 6: got to be out there at the end of the day.
- 43:48Speaker 6: But big woods. I throw the red oaks out there,
- 43:50Speaker 6: the clear cuts and the white oaks, and then you
- 43:52Speaker 6: know elfelfa and corn. If you're the private land or
- 43:55Speaker 6: egg country guy.
- 43:57Speaker 3: M h.
- 43:58Speaker 1: What As far as this time period, I'm trying to
- 44:02Speaker 1: because I want to give as much value to people
- 44:04Speaker 1: because this is like a lot of people there's season
- 44:06Speaker 1: rides over the next three weeks, whether they're successful or not.
- 44:09Speaker 1: And that's the reality for many people, myself included. It's
- 44:12Speaker 1: like I could start to get nervous over these next
- 44:14Speaker 1: three weeks I don't connect with something, so there's a
- 44:17Speaker 1: lot of self pressure here. Do you have any mental
- 44:19Speaker 1: things that have for people to have in the back
- 44:21Speaker 1: of their mind. Obviously I mind is don't get pinched up, like, remember,
- 44:26Speaker 1: this is what you enjoy. But do you have any
- 44:28Speaker 1: other mental mental things that they need to keep in mind.
- 44:31Speaker 1: As you know, there's level of excitement and then a
- 44:33Speaker 1: level of frustration if you have don't have success throughout
- 44:36Speaker 1: some of this time period.
- 44:37Speaker 5: First of all, just breathe, man, this is what we
- 44:39Speaker 5: love to do.
- 44:40Speaker 6: The media side of things makes us all feel like
- 44:43Speaker 6: we got to live up to somebody's else's standard.
- 44:45Speaker 5: Go have fun. Go have fun, like more than anything, man.
- 44:48Speaker 6: But if I had to be honest with you, if
- 44:49Speaker 6: I had to get on the tactical side of it,
- 44:51Speaker 6: like remember that mentally, like you do this because you
- 44:53Speaker 6: have fun, Like you feel like you have to go hunting,
- 44:55Speaker 6: you have to go hunting, and half to hunting like
- 44:56Speaker 6: maybe chill maybe not this time yere, but like yeah,
- 45:00Speaker 6: think about it that way. But from a tactical perspective,
- 45:05Speaker 6: use trail cameras as a tool, but do not do
- 45:08Speaker 6: not like bank on them. Be out there, and I'll
- 45:12Speaker 6: tell you right now, I hunt the wrong wind even
- 45:13Speaker 6: a lot of times being out there, because those aren't
- 45:15Speaker 6: consistently coming from the areas that they were early season
- 45:17Speaker 6: when you expected them to come from X y Z area,
- 45:20Speaker 6: So you hunted it on this win. I've hunted my
- 45:22Speaker 6: best spots on the exact wrong win. Guess what the
- 45:25Speaker 6: bucks coming like, they come in from a different direction.
- 45:28Speaker 6: So here you are, you're sitting on the coach because
- 45:30Speaker 6: the wind wasn't Now this is the time of year, guys,
- 45:32Speaker 6: go because I gang out there ain't gonna kill them.
- 45:35Speaker 5: Bottom up.
- 45:35Speaker 1: Must be present to win this time of year, and.
- 45:38Speaker 6: I have to, and it's ingrained in our head. Play
- 45:40Speaker 6: the wind, play the wind, Play the wind, and pay
- 45:41Speaker 6: attention to the wind. Try and be strategic as possible.
- 45:44Speaker 6: Don't go out there willy nilly. Pay attention to your
- 45:46Speaker 6: thermals and stuff, but don't be afraid to hunt on
- 45:48Speaker 6: the wrong wind.
- 45:49Speaker 1: Yeah yeah. As far as vocalizations, grunting, snartweeze, rattling, where
- 45:55Speaker 1: does that fall within your your bag of tricks this
- 45:57Speaker 1: time of year.
- 45:58Speaker 6: I'm keeping them all in the pocket until that bucket
- 46:01Speaker 6: unless that like, if that buck isn't naturally coming my way,
- 46:03Speaker 6: then I'm busting them out.
- 46:04Speaker 1: Now.
- 46:04Speaker 5: It depends on the state. Like in a state like Wisconsin,
- 46:06Speaker 5: I don't even carry rattling antlers.
- 46:09Speaker 6: Maybe I'll bust out some rattling antlers in the In
- 46:11Speaker 6: the big buck states, you know occasionally if I'm bored
- 46:15Speaker 6: or things are slow, unless it be realistic, But otherwise, like,
- 46:19Speaker 6: I'm not probably busting out blind calls because those big
- 46:22Speaker 6: bucks are smart to a certain extent and they're gonna
- 46:24Speaker 6: get down and win. If you're going to catch them
- 46:25Speaker 6: off guard, it's to be this time of year. You know,
- 46:27Speaker 6: you get away with it. Maybe they don't come in
- 46:28Speaker 6: down win, but keep the calls in your pockets. Unless
- 46:31Speaker 6: you feel like you're not going to get that opportunity,
- 46:32Speaker 6: do your best to bring that deer in and if
- 46:34Speaker 6: you're in a big buck stake, crack them together from
- 46:37Speaker 6: time to time and see what happens.
- 46:38Speaker 5: It's always fun.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Let me rune in a really quick scenario. Pass you
- 46:42Speaker 1: October twenty fifth. You got a picture of a buck
- 46:45Speaker 1: you've never got before, showed up on a scrape middle
- 46:48Speaker 1: of the night. What are the odds are you riding
- 46:52Speaker 1: that one piece of breadcrumb throughout this next week or
- 46:57Speaker 1: is in the back of your mind are you abandoning it?
- 47:00Speaker 1: And this think of the guy that is w killed
- 47:01Speaker 1: good buck too.
- 47:04Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean I don't care when I get the pictures.
- 47:07Speaker 6: I'm that guy. Like everybody waits for daylight pictures. You
- 47:09Speaker 6: know how many times they walk find these things. You
- 47:11Speaker 6: know he exists, get out there and hunt, and that's
- 47:13Speaker 6: what I'll say. So you know, it's one photo, but
- 47:16Speaker 6: he might have been there for three four days. Hell,
- 47:18Speaker 6: I got a deer that just showed back up a
- 47:20Speaker 6: neighbor sent me a picture of them, or five, six,
- 47:22Speaker 6: seven days ago.
- 47:23Speaker 5: He's been there.
- 47:24Speaker 6: So yeah, it might be a breadcrumb, but in reality,
- 47:28Speaker 6: like the whole puzzle might be taking place on your
- 47:30Speaker 6: property and just steps around around those trail cameras. So
- 47:34Speaker 6: lean into it. If you know he's there, that's all
- 47:35Speaker 6: you need to know. This is the time you got
- 47:37Speaker 6: to be out there. He exists, Go hunt, go kill him.
- 47:40Speaker 1: I like it. Any other party words of advice, have.
- 47:43Speaker 6: Fun, have fun, shoot straight, breathe, don't black out, and
- 47:49Speaker 6: don't trust in those trail cameras and uh yeah, man,
- 47:53Speaker 6: just have fun.
- 47:54Speaker 1: Go get them. I love it. Good luck, Brett, Appreciate it.
- 47:56Speaker 5: Appreciate it, man. All right.
- 47:58Speaker 1: Next up on line, we have F. Thomas from New York.
- 48:01Speaker 1: How's everything going in the Empire State. It's going great, man,
- 48:07Speaker 1: it's going good. Have you been out much here? Legly?
- 48:08Speaker 1: What have you been seeing.
- 48:10Speaker 7: So I mean getting out as much as I can.
- 48:13Speaker 8: You know, I got a two year old and a
- 48:15Speaker 8: three year old at home, so I'm trying to pick
- 48:17Speaker 8: my spots and make sure that when I when I
- 48:19Speaker 8: do hit the woods, that you know, things are right
- 48:22Speaker 8: and I'm going to a good spot with the right conditions.
- 48:25Speaker 8: But I've been able to see, uh, you know firsthand
- 48:28Speaker 8: some of the behavior uh changing over the last couple
- 48:31Speaker 8: of weeks.
- 48:33Speaker 7: You know, last week, Friday.
- 48:35Speaker 8: Morning was gonna be the coldest morning in kind of
- 48:38Speaker 8: a ten day span, and I wanted to hit the
- 48:40Speaker 8: woods and you know, I've been looking forward to it
- 48:43Speaker 8: the whole work week, and then something came up last
- 48:45Speaker 8: minute and I had to cancel that because of work,
- 48:48Speaker 8: and so it was it was Thursday afternoon or nothing.
- 48:52Speaker 8: And uh, I said to my wife, and you know,
- 48:55Speaker 8: you're gonna be okay without me, And she just sent
- 48:57Speaker 8: me the the meme of Independence Day with the president
- 49:01Speaker 8: talking to Augy one said we will survive, and uh
- 49:05Speaker 8: so that's all I needed. And you know, work ended
- 49:08Speaker 8: and I was in the back of the truck getting
- 49:10Speaker 8: geared up, and uh, I said to my buddy Dan,
- 49:12Speaker 8: I go, oh, the only thing I don't have is
- 49:13Speaker 8: my black rack.
- 49:15Speaker 7: And he went in the shop and pulled out just
- 49:17Speaker 7: a little set of of.
- 49:19Speaker 8: Antlers off a tiny little basket six point I said.
- 49:22Speaker 1: You want to take these?
- 49:23Speaker 8: And I said, day, it's better than nothing, And that
- 49:26Speaker 8: ended up coming in handy.
- 49:28Speaker 7: I was hunting the edge of a little winter wheat field.
- 49:31Speaker 8: It was just a little panhandle of the bigger field
- 49:33Speaker 8: that has woods on three sides. And a button buck
- 49:36Speaker 8: came out, and then a spike came out, and I.
- 49:38Speaker 7: Said, all right, well we're moving in the right direction here, uh.
- 49:41Speaker 7: And then a dole and a yearling, and then.
- 49:43Speaker 8: A shooter came out. And this was, you know, a
- 49:46Speaker 8: solid half hour before sunset. And I just let him
- 49:50Speaker 8: go and he fed in the winter wheat. You know,
- 49:52Speaker 8: that was the only thing that he cared about. And
- 49:55Speaker 8: after a while I said, all right, it's not gonna
- 49:56Speaker 8: happen naturally. I got to go to the bag of
- 49:58Speaker 8: tricks and I under at him. A little bit could
- 50:01Speaker 8: not have carried less, and I pulled out those two
- 50:05Speaker 8: little sheds and up tight against the tree, and I'm
- 50:08Speaker 8: looking over at him, you know, with looking over my
- 50:10Speaker 8: shoulder at him, watching him and I'm just tickling those
- 50:12Speaker 8: antlers together. As soon as he heard him, he lifted
- 50:16Speaker 8: his head right up, started right in my direction, and
- 50:19Speaker 8: then went back to feeding. And I did that two
- 50:21Speaker 8: or three times until I really really gave it to
- 50:24Speaker 8: the antlers as loud as I can make those things go.
- 50:27Speaker 8: And he dropped what he was doing. He started coming
- 50:29Speaker 8: across the field, and if he had come right for me,
- 50:33Speaker 8: it would have worked out perfect.
- 50:35Speaker 7: You know, he covered the distance he needed to cover.
- 50:38Speaker 8: But you know, these these bucks are smart, and he
- 50:40Speaker 8: caught a little bit of an angle just enough to
- 50:42Speaker 8: get down winded me, and you know he he froze
- 50:46Speaker 8: up about twenty yards off the edge of the woods,
- 50:48Speaker 8: about forty yards away from me, and I didn't have
- 50:51Speaker 8: a shot, and you know, he took off.
- 50:54Speaker 7: But that was a cool encounter to see.
- 50:56Speaker 8: You know, he didn't really care about the dough in
- 50:58Speaker 8: the field, you know, he did, don't really care about
- 51:00Speaker 8: the grounds. But you heard a couple other bucks that
- 51:03Speaker 8: were we're playing around, and that got him interested.
- 51:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's exciting, man. That's a that you're rattling
- 51:10Speaker 1: antlers for everyone listening. Are hilarious. That's awesome.
- 51:16Speaker 7: Actually, I use them to train my dog for his headhuntings.
- 51:19Speaker 8: So they're they're chewed up, they got keieth marks all
- 51:21Speaker 8: over them, but you know they did what.
- 51:23Speaker 7: They needed to do that day, that's for sure.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Yeah. No, that's that's super awesome. So what I've been
- 51:28Speaker 1: doing here with each guest, I've been uh making up
- 51:31Speaker 1: trivia question each each step of the way. And you're
- 51:32Speaker 1: gonna get a hard one. So I'm sorry, what year,
- 51:37Speaker 1: what year, or any information that you can tell me
- 51:39Speaker 1: about the typical state record for New York. You can
- 51:42Speaker 1: either say the county, the year, or the score. Because
- 51:46Speaker 1: this is it's a it's a hard one. I think
- 51:48Speaker 1: people will find maybe a little bit interesting. So this
- 51:51Speaker 1: is a typical state record.
- 51:53Speaker 8: Yes, sir, So I'm gonna go down in the southern
- 51:56Speaker 8: part of the state.
- 51:56Speaker 7: I'm gonna go stupin county the year.
- 52:02Speaker 8: Why do I want to I want to think that
- 52:03Speaker 8: this is like a legendary buck of classic bucks. I'm
- 52:06Speaker 8: gonna go like seventy three and the score, you know,
- 52:12Speaker 8: I mean it might surprise uh, it might surprise even me.
- 52:15Speaker 8: I'm gonna go like one eight five.
- 52:18Speaker 1: Okay, So it was in a hopefully I pronounce this correctly,
- 52:21Speaker 1: Alleghany a lll e Okay, that's right down there. And
- 52:25Speaker 1: it was a nineteen thirty nine. Okay, this is a
- 52:29Speaker 1: very very old record and it scored one ninety eight
- 52:32Speaker 1: and three eights inch just uh not typical, which I
- 52:35Speaker 1: don't I'd have to google this year because I don't
- 52:37Speaker 1: know what dear it is off the top of my head.
- 52:38Speaker 1: But what a uh that's And what's interesting too is
- 52:42Speaker 1: the non typical record was the same year, nineteen thirty nine,
- 52:45Speaker 1: and it was a two forty four non typical. So
- 52:48Speaker 1: Alleghany in nineteen thirty nine was the place to be.
- 52:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess.
- 52:52Speaker 1: So, yeah, that's a long time ago. So right now. Obviously,
- 52:55Speaker 1: you know you had a really good hunt and you
- 52:57Speaker 1: were able to you know, call in a buck to
- 53:01Speaker 1: the bubble, like really really close to having it come together. Obviously,
- 53:04Speaker 1: it's a very exciting time of year. It's October twenty ninth.
- 53:06Speaker 1: It's like peak anticipation. People are still super fresh for
- 53:12Speaker 1: the next week. What are you keen in on when
- 53:15Speaker 1: you get an opportunity to go? How are you prioritizing sits?
- 53:18Speaker 1: Because it's only seven days and once the seven days
- 53:20Speaker 1: are gone, it's like maximizing each day in opportunities. What
- 53:23Speaker 1: top of mind for everyone's how are you going to
- 53:25Speaker 1: do that?
- 53:26Speaker 8: So I have you know, I have about three hundred
- 53:30Speaker 8: acres of private land that I have access of permission
- 53:34Speaker 8: to hunt, and those are spread out over you know,
- 53:37Speaker 8: a two hour drive across the state. Some of them
- 53:40Speaker 8: are as small as seventeen that are just door knocking permission,
- 53:43Speaker 8: and some of them, you know, my folks farm out
- 53:46Speaker 8: in Wayne County. You know, that's like one hundred and
- 53:48Speaker 8: forty acres. So I kind of get to you know,
- 53:51Speaker 8: there's like five spots I get to pick. Okay, where
- 53:54Speaker 8: can I go? What's the wind doing? And sometimes that's
- 53:57Speaker 8: a game time decision. If I'm going to hunt the afternoon,
- 53:59Speaker 8: I'm not making a final call between a few of
- 54:01Speaker 8: the spots closer to home until you know that afternoon.
- 54:06Speaker 7: But you know, I'm I'm just trying to play the wind.
- 54:10Speaker 1: I'm trying to make.
- 54:11Speaker 8: Sure that that the set is right, and if the
- 54:14Speaker 8: set is right, then anything can happen.
- 54:16Speaker 1: What what how do you know the set is right?
- 54:19Speaker 1: So what are what are some check checkboxes for that
- 54:22Speaker 1: click off?
- 54:23Speaker 8: So that that winter wheat field and that small little
- 54:26Speaker 8: panhandle inside of a forty acre parcel has been as
- 54:31Speaker 8: productive for me over the past four or five years
- 54:33Speaker 8: as any spot I've ever hunted. And so because it
- 54:37Speaker 8: has three sections awards around it, i'm I can set
- 54:41Speaker 8: up on what side of it that I want and
- 54:44Speaker 8: I can kind of even get myself where that we're
- 54:48Speaker 8: you know, if the wind is not perfect this time
- 54:50Speaker 8: of year, I will I will push it a little bit,
- 54:54Speaker 8: but it's you know, it's at this time of year
- 54:58Speaker 8: has been seared into my memory.
- 55:00Speaker 7: The end of October began November.
- 55:03Speaker 8: A few years ago, there was a buck out of
- 55:04Speaker 8: my dad's that was, you know, once in a lifetime
- 55:07Speaker 8: buck and.
- 55:09Speaker 7: The end of October I was supposed to be out hunting.
- 55:12Speaker 8: The guys that were replacing our furnace asked if they
- 55:15Speaker 8: could come on a Saturday morning to finish the job,
- 55:17Speaker 8: and I stayed at home.
- 55:18Speaker 1: And when I.
- 55:19Speaker 8: Pulled the cards for that camera, that buck was on
- 55:21Speaker 8: its feet October twenty ninth, at eight twenty in the morning,
- 55:24Speaker 8: walking down a logging road checking sign. So you know,
- 55:28Speaker 8: monsters will be on their feet at the end of
- 55:30Speaker 8: October looking for deer. And when I did get out
- 55:33Speaker 8: there November second, that buck was on a dough The
- 55:38Speaker 8: doe was coming across the field in broad daylight at
- 55:40Speaker 8: nine o'clock in the morning, and it was six yards
- 55:43Speaker 8: behind her.
- 55:44Speaker 1: You know.
- 55:45Speaker 8: So I am still a proponent of if you have
- 55:49Speaker 8: dose that are doing things in the morning, you know
- 55:51Speaker 8: where they're going to be, you know where they're going
- 55:53Speaker 8: to be passing through.
- 55:54Speaker 7: You know, you have to just hope to.
- 55:56Speaker 8: Be lucky enough that one of those dozs is hot
- 55:57Speaker 8: and that there's a shooter with it, and that's you know,
- 56:01Speaker 8: I'm just hutting the best I know how to do,
- 56:03Speaker 8: and I like to hunt tight.
- 56:05Speaker 7: I'm not a big you know, I.
- 56:07Speaker 8: Don't care if I can see ninety yards or one
- 56:10Speaker 8: hundred yards. A lot of my sets, especially out of
- 56:12Speaker 8: my dad's, are on the edge of thick cover.
- 56:16Speaker 1: You know.
- 56:16Speaker 8: There's a chunk of land out there that was plowed
- 56:18Speaker 8: and planted in the early nineties and it has never
- 56:22Speaker 8: been touched since then, and that is so thick that,
- 56:26Speaker 8: you know, me and my buddy Carlo joked that the deer,
- 56:29Speaker 8: like the Vietcong, they tunnel through this stuff, you know,
- 56:32Speaker 8: and a three year old could walk down these trails
- 56:34Speaker 8: and not scratch her hair on his head and a
- 56:36Speaker 8: grown man would have to get on his hands and knees.
- 56:38Speaker 7: So I hunt the edges of that, and I'm not
- 56:42Speaker 7: opposed to.
- 56:43Speaker 8: You know, I'll go to a set that I can
- 56:45Speaker 8: have early access, easy access to, and I'll hunt it
- 56:48Speaker 8: until eight or eight thirty, and then if I can
- 56:50Speaker 8: climb down and I can move quietly one hundred yards
- 56:54Speaker 8: further back in and get in another hang on that
- 56:56Speaker 8: I have, I've done that, and I've come to full
- 56:59Speaker 8: draw on shooter bucks that I had. You know, I
- 57:01Speaker 8: saw at nine thirty in the morning, and I moved
- 57:03Speaker 8: stands that morning, so I try to see mobile. You know,
- 57:06Speaker 8: I'm hung with a saddle, and I'm trying to not
- 57:10Speaker 8: hunt the same place twice this time of year if
- 57:14Speaker 8: I can help it. Unless it's unless I think it's
- 57:16Speaker 8: you know, a make or break opportunity. And you know
- 57:20Speaker 8: they say that luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity,
- 57:24Speaker 8: and this time of the year, you just got to
- 57:26Speaker 8: give yourself the opportunity to get lucky.
- 57:28Speaker 7: And that's all I can do.
- 57:31Speaker 1: Yeah, No, it's a it's a very exciting time. So
- 57:34Speaker 1: on a scale one to ten, how aggressive would you
- 57:36Speaker 1: say your style of hunting is for this next week,
- 57:38Speaker 1: because obviously, once we get into deeper in November, it's
- 57:41Speaker 1: basically the gloves are off and people are doing whatever
- 57:43Speaker 1: they feel like they need to do and have really
- 57:46Speaker 1: no remorse. So it's just kind of chaos the deer chaos,
- 57:48Speaker 1: and people's approaches tend to get a little less disciplined,
- 57:51Speaker 1: which sometimes works really well. You know, we're not We're
- 57:53Speaker 1: not quite there. So where do you fall on one
- 57:56Speaker 1: to ten? Ten being is I will do anything, go
- 57:58Speaker 1: anywhere because I think that's where I need to be.
- 58:00Speaker 1: And one being is like, pretend it's the first day
- 58:02Speaker 1: of the season and it's one hundred and twenty degrees.
- 58:06Speaker 8: So I think that the I think the actual on
- 58:09Speaker 8: the ground activity is going to be an eight eight
- 58:12Speaker 8: pointy five, but I'm going to hunt it like it's
- 58:16Speaker 8: an eleven. You know, I'm going to go that the
- 58:19Speaker 8: end of October beginning in November is what I had
- 58:22Speaker 8: been waiting for for the last eleven and a half months,
- 58:26Speaker 8: you know, because gunk season rolls around in New York,
- 58:29Speaker 8: especially about my dad's you know, I have stands that
- 58:31Speaker 8: are two hundred yards from state land and bucks just
- 58:35Speaker 8: typically don't last. And you know, I in the years past,
- 58:40Speaker 8: I've said, oh, this is my target buck, and I'm
- 58:41Speaker 8: not shooting anything but this buck. And that can make
- 58:44Speaker 8: for some boring sits, especially when you passed on a
- 58:46Speaker 8: really nice eight you know, and I have I have
- 58:50Speaker 8: a hard time, especially during both season where you know,
- 58:55Speaker 8: if it if it looks like a shooter, then it's
- 58:57Speaker 8: a shooter. And I like that for the last couple
- 59:01Speaker 8: of years where you know, some of the some of
- 59:03Speaker 8: the nicest bucks I've got in the last five years
- 59:05Speaker 8: have been deer that I shot that I you know,
- 59:08Speaker 8: brought home, put in the tree and then I checked
- 59:10Speaker 8: the card so that I swapped out from that property
- 59:13Speaker 8: and the first time I saw it on camera was
- 59:15Speaker 8: after I already killed it, you know. And it's I know,
- 59:18Speaker 8: a shooter when I see it type of hunting. And
- 59:22Speaker 8: if it makes you shake in the tree, and it
- 59:24Speaker 8: gets your blood flowing, and it's a mature deer, you know,
- 59:27Speaker 8: three and a.
- 59:27Speaker 1: Half year old.
- 59:28Speaker 7: You know, textbook definition. You look it up in the
- 59:31Speaker 7: dictionary and.
- 59:32Speaker 8: There's a picture of a beautiful eight point white tail
- 59:34Speaker 8: that's good enough for me, I would take those and
- 59:37Speaker 8: happily full my tag on those all year, especially here
- 59:40Speaker 8: in upstate New York.
- 59:41Speaker 1: I love it man. That's yeah, it's a super exciting
- 59:43Speaker 1: time of year. And I think you're exactly right in
- 59:45Speaker 1: terms of the amount of big deer in the landscape.
- 59:48Speaker 1: This week, right now is probably when there will be
- 59:51Speaker 1: the most amount of big deer in the landscape that
- 59:53Speaker 1: are alive. Because deer get big bucks gets shot, you know,
- 59:57Speaker 1: progressively more moving forward. So if you we were just
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: trying to say, hey, I want to kill big buck,
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: this might be arguably the best week of the entire
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: year in terms of odds and the amount of good
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: bucks running rounds. That's super exciting. Man. Is there in
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: New York and kind of where you're hunting is there?
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: Are you gonna are you plinting to hunt food sources
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: or are you pretty much shifting your strategy to downwind
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: of thick, nasty betting cover.
- 1:00:21Speaker 8: So out out of my folks place, it's standing in
- 1:00:24Speaker 8: corner right now and right and you know every year
- 1:00:28Speaker 8: that it's corn, it's the corn bean rotation, And every
- 1:00:30Speaker 8: year that it's corn. When the combine shows up, my
- 1:00:33Speaker 8: dad calls me, and I look at the guys I
- 1:00:35Speaker 8: work with and I say, I'll see you later, and.
- 1:00:38Speaker 7: I am in the wind. I'm gone.
- 1:00:41Speaker 8: And that's that year that that big buck was that
- 1:00:44Speaker 8: was there. I know all about it because they end
- 1:00:47Speaker 8: up getting killed in December with the crossbow about, you know,
- 1:00:51Speaker 8: three quarters of a mile away.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: It was six and a half years old.
- 1:00:54Speaker 8: That year was the largest buck killed at the crossbow
- 1:00:57Speaker 8: in New York State. It scored like a one to
- 1:00:59Speaker 8: seventy seven and change. And that deer was in that
- 1:01:03Speaker 8: cut corn. I'm not kidding. Twenty minutes after the combine
- 1:01:07Speaker 8: was gone and he was on his feet chasing doze
- 1:01:10Speaker 8: all over the place. So I'm I'm you know, I'm
- 1:01:15Speaker 8: just with staring at my phone every hour, going, man,
- 1:01:17Speaker 8: I hope my pop calls. Hope my pop calls, because
- 1:01:19Speaker 8: once that happens, that's where I'm gonna go. But until then,
- 1:01:23Speaker 8: you know, I'm I'm just I'm hunting. I'm hunting as
- 1:01:27Speaker 8: if every haunt is the most important hunt.
- 1:01:30Speaker 7: And uh, I just got a chunk this past weekend.
- 1:01:34Speaker 8: I took my son with me kind of the secret
- 1:01:35Speaker 8: weapon of door knocking. A cute a cute three year
- 1:01:39Speaker 8: old boy and UH and picked up seventeen acres. And
- 1:01:42Speaker 8: you know when I went on that for the first
- 1:01:44Speaker 8: time with my saddle and UH and the cell cam,
- 1:01:47Speaker 8: you know, I treated it like there was a big
- 1:01:50Speaker 8: deer on it, you know.
- 1:01:51Speaker 7: And and that's all I can hope to do, you know.
- 1:01:54Speaker 7: And if you treat every.
- 1:01:55Speaker 8: Haunt like it's the best hunt and the next tount
- 1:01:57Speaker 8: is the best hunt, I think you're setting yourself up
- 1:01:59Speaker 8: for for success.
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: I love it. Man, Well, good luck it's gonna be
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: you're hunting like eleven. You think activity is gonna be
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: an eight and a half. That's really great and I
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: tend to agree, So good luck the rest of the season.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: Maybe you might need to upgrade your rata Houain analysts,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: or maybe not. Maybe you're onto something. So good luck
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: to you. Jeff, Thank you very much, Jake.
- 1:02:20Speaker 7: Appreciate you having me on there.
