- 0:20Speaker 1: drinking the Doctor K. That's why you don't.
- 0:24Speaker 2: I'm sorry, doctor K.
- 0:26Speaker 1: You don't do the bubbly when you're about to record
- 0:29Speaker 1: a podcast. It's risky business.
- 0:31Speaker 2: What is there? What is there? What's their Doctor Pepper,
- 0:34Speaker 2: doctor Thunder?
- 0:36Speaker 1: No, Doctor Thunder is the mountain dew? Doctor K is
- 0:39Speaker 1: the Doctor Pepper.
- 0:40Speaker 2: No, I'm sorry, what's their mellow.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Like mountain dew, doctor Thunder?
- 0:45Speaker 2: That's oh doctor Oh.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Doctor Thunder is the mountain Dew and doctor doctor K
- 0:51Speaker 1: is doctor Pepper? Oh yeah, but this is doctor K
- 0:56Speaker 1: and cream soda. Oh yeah.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Can I say and well, go ahead with Fisher introduction
- 1:03Speaker 2: because I have a Yeah.
- 1:05Speaker 1: That's that's Brandon Say is a board member of the
- 1:08Speaker 1: Music City Film Critics Association member of the Southeastern Film
- 1:11Speaker 1: Critics Association. He's our resident film critic at Nashville Movie Dispatch.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Mister big Shot, Brandon Vick and of course all of
- 1:19Speaker 1: our work at Nashville Movie Dispatch dot substack dot com. So,
- 1:23Speaker 1: as you were, my.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Dad loves the Coke zero sugar vanilla orange.
- 1:35Speaker 1: No, just it's either just vanilla.
- 1:37Speaker 2: It's either vanilla or vanilla float. I can't remember.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I know they have a vanilla Coke zero that is
- 1:44Speaker 1: very apparently where they still make it.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Where he lives, they don't make it as much. So
- 1:51Speaker 2: he actually has the whole family searching Middle Tennessee Kroger
- 1:56Speaker 2: because he's been stashing them. Yeah, because he loves it
- 2:00Speaker 2: so much. And he's like, hey, until then, I'll just
- 2:03Speaker 2: get regular coke and I'll do vanilla and stuff too.
- 2:06Speaker 2: And I raised my hand. I'm like, but you're a diabetic.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that defeats the purpose. Just trying to pull
- 2:13Speaker 1: the rug out from under you, guys.
- 2:15Speaker 2: I'm going to tell you. And I don't know if
- 2:16Speaker 2: he wants me to tell say this or not, but
- 2:18Speaker 2: his doctor told him he probably shouldn't have some of
- 2:22Speaker 2: these things, so maybe he He hasn't mentioned it this year,
- 2:27Speaker 2: big topic in November holiday, and we tried, we really
- 2:33Speaker 2: tried to find him some so that way he could
- 2:35Speaker 2: have it. But he is an old school where like
- 2:39Speaker 2: my dad remembers going to a diner and they had
- 2:42Speaker 2: like the legit vanilla coke like legit.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And waffle House still does it.
- 2:48Speaker 2: He has always loved it. I am not a fan
- 2:53Speaker 2: he had. I have tried from waffle House to the
- 2:56Speaker 2: the can stuff and I can't. I can't get into it.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Now a regular coat zero, yeah done, but I can't
- 3:05Speaker 2: get into it.
- 3:06Speaker 1: I love vanilla, I love uh.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Like. I don't like the Doctor Pepper cream cold like.
- 3:14Speaker 2: I don't know, it just doesn't taste the same.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I like the Doctor Pepper cream soda, Okay, I like
- 3:20Speaker 1: regular cream soapa.
- 3:21Speaker 2: It must be because they're they're always there. And now
- 3:23Speaker 2: there's like a strawberry cream.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I haven't. I haven't gone that far. I did
- 3:28Speaker 1: try the BlackBerry Doctor Pepper back in the summer time. Yeah,
- 3:31Speaker 1: it's a little too little, too out there for me.
- 3:35Speaker 2: I tried the seven up anchovy one and it was
- 3:39Speaker 2: in my tummy hurt.
- 3:40Speaker 1: They do have the Tropical sprite these days. Yes, that's
- 3:43Speaker 1: pretty good.
- 3:44Speaker 2: And and I will say, and I don't want to
- 3:47Speaker 2: I don't want to pick on anybody, but the cherry
- 3:50Speaker 2: PEPSI zero.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Sugar yeah, not that great really.
- 3:54Speaker 2: But the Pepsi zero sugar, which is at every Regal cinema, Yeah,
- 3:59Speaker 2: I like, but I can't get into the I used
- 4:02Speaker 2: to love cherry pepsi, but that zero how okay? Now
- 4:05Speaker 2: I hit the ball is It's not like it's in
- 4:09Speaker 2: a weird way. And like my father in law one
- 4:12Speaker 2: of them, he loves it and he let me try it,
- 4:15Speaker 2: and I'm like, you just couldn't do no. Take that
- 4:17Speaker 2: whole case back home, buddy, I don't.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Want to throw it. Throw it out right now. When
- 4:22Speaker 1: did Regal switch over from Coca Cola to Pepsi?
- 4:24Speaker 2: Oh? I know, because.
- 4:26Speaker 1: That's as it is.
- 4:28Speaker 2: And the one thing I really love about AMC is
- 4:32Speaker 2: that they have not only do they have coke products,
- 4:35Speaker 2: but they have where like you can get coke zero,
- 4:40Speaker 2: like you can get coke sprite zero grape. Yeah, and
- 4:47Speaker 2: I only used to get kind of now the cherry.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Now the cherry coke zero sugar is delicious.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I will get peach sprite at those things.
- 4:55Speaker 2: I have never eate. I don't know if I've ever
- 4:57Speaker 2: even laid my eyes on that.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Very very good.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Yeah, but I would say it's at least a couple
- 5:02Speaker 2: of years, and honestly, for people that love refreshments, it
- 5:07Speaker 2: is kind of a bummer that they made a deal
- 5:09Speaker 2: with Pepsi because I'm first of all, Pepsi I don't
- 5:13Speaker 2: like as much as Coke. I'm thankful that I like
- 5:17Speaker 2: Pepsi zero sugar and it's it's enough to have with
- 5:20Speaker 2: my popcorn. But I give anything just for Coke to
- 5:25Speaker 2: just to take over everything.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I'm with you.
- 5:27Speaker 2: But here's the thing. And I don't know if AMC
- 5:29Speaker 2: does it, but Monday through Thursday from three to six,
- 5:32Speaker 2: Regal has Happy Hour and I have gotten some beers
- 5:36Speaker 2: for three dollars.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Hey, that ain't bad. Yeah.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Now, Providence in Mountain Juliet does not do it, and
- 5:42Speaker 2: I don't.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Think they barely have air conditioning correct.
- 5:45Speaker 2: And they barely have seats that you can sit your
- 5:48Speaker 2: ass in Hendersonville does not have anything. But Opry Mills does.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Got a bar in Hollywood twenty seven does? Anybody in
- 5:56Speaker 2: Nashville knows where these cinemas are. But it's a nice
- 6:00Speaker 2: little Michelob. I don't have a nice michelobultra or have
- 6:03Speaker 2: a blue Moon five bucks.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Uh, I get a Voodoo Ranger. They've got pretty good,
- 6:10Speaker 1: pretty good IPA selection there. I appreciate you all for
- 6:14Speaker 1: tuning in for this episode of the Soda Review.
- 6:16Speaker 2: This is drinking with uh.
- 6:19Speaker 1: We are here to talk about any given Sunday Oliver
- 6:23Speaker 1: Stone flows Oh yeah, from nineteen ninety nine football flick
- 6:27Speaker 1: sports drama. I guess you you could call it Al Pacino,
- 6:31Speaker 1: Cameron Diaz, Jamie Fox, James Woods. How could we?
- 6:36Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Dennis Quaid.
- 6:38Speaker 1: A young Aaron Eckhart caught me off guard in this
- 6:41Speaker 1: one as well.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, quite the case. Wait a minute,
- 6:45Speaker 2: I didn't hear Bill Bellamy.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Bill Bellamy, ll cool j LT isn't Lawrence Taylor is
- 6:52Speaker 1: in this. Jim Brown is in this.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Which I love him too. I do too, Yeah, him
- 6:56Speaker 2: and j T who LT together?
- 7:00Speaker 1: I like that.
- 7:02Speaker 2: I hold on.
- 7:05Speaker 1: I want to go ahead, start start us all.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I want to say I have seen this movie before.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I love to reference uh Willie Beamon in his song
- 7:19Speaker 2: It's Willy Beaman.
- 7:20Speaker 1: I keep the ladies screaming, he says, creaming, creaming. Oh my,
- 7:27Speaker 1: at least that's what I heard. I need got it.
- 7:31Speaker 2: We need to.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Get to the bottom of this because unless I'm misheard,
- 7:43Speaker 1: unless I'm misheard because I perked up.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Listen, screaming and creaming are too different, because oh.
- 7:52Speaker 1: When I heard it, I was perked up, like, I
- 7:54Speaker 1: don't remember that being the song.
- 7:56Speaker 2: No, I don't either. Oh, I need to talk Pastor feel.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I wonder if we can look this up if it's
- 8:03Speaker 1: on YouTube.
- 8:04Speaker 2: I said, I'm very curious to what your thoughts would
- 8:08Speaker 2: would be on this, because you also obviously have a
- 8:13Speaker 2: very knowledgeable background on football, especially here locally with the
- 8:17Speaker 2: Tennessee Titans. Yeah, and so there's no way that most
- 8:24Speaker 2: of this ship depicted is not real in some form
- 8:28Speaker 2: or fashion. Right.
- 8:29Speaker 1: We will we will get to that. We will get
- 8:31Speaker 1: to that. But for now, I do have the Willy
- 8:33Speaker 1: Beamon song. I don't know if I can play it
- 8:35Speaker 1: on this because it'll it's it should be fine. You
- 8:37Speaker 1: might have to take one side of the headphones off
- 8:39Speaker 1: to there we go.
- 8:50Speaker 2: No, it's cream, it's Pastor Field. Oh my gosh.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Oh so I don't know if you guys.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Whoh my god.
- 9:04Speaker 1: I don't know if the I don't know if the uh,
- 9:07Speaker 1: the microphones picked up the song, but we but I can.
- 9:10Speaker 1: It's very cream.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I thought, Oh, I remember Baptist.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I'm glad this is what we're starting with, because it is.
- 9:23Speaker 1: It is one of the first things I think of
- 9:25Speaker 1: when I think about this movie. Even though I realized
- 9:29Speaker 1: I realized twenty minutes into this. I'm like, I've never
- 9:31Speaker 1: seen this.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Movie, so that was gonna be My question. Is I
- 9:35Speaker 2: thought you had seen it. It just has been a
- 9:38Speaker 2: very long time.
- 9:39Speaker 1: I thought so too, But I remembered nothing about this
- 9:42Speaker 1: movie except for that song and then Jim Brown's quote
- 9:46Speaker 1: where he says, I don't get strokes, motherfucker. I give
- 9:50Speaker 1: you used to say it all yes, when we were
- 9:53Speaker 1: in high school.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Well, and this explains why. And this is and I
- 9:57Speaker 2: I totally admit I feel like this. This is very strange.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Any given, Sunday was the first DVD I ever bought,
- 10:05Speaker 2: which means I walked into a Walmart or Target with
- 10:08Speaker 2: my parents. Well, I picked out any even Sunday to
- 10:13Speaker 2: take home.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I mean at the time, though, it's nineteen ninety nine
- 10:16Speaker 1: when this comes out, so what should not be.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Yeah, No, I know, I think it's within ninety eight.
- 10:22Speaker 2: I think so. And I don't think I truly understood.
- 10:26Speaker 2: First of all, I know for a fact, I didn't
- 10:28Speaker 2: quite at the time understand who Oliver Stone was and
- 10:33Speaker 2: what he meant.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I mean that's a that's a that's a filmography.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Yeah. And I don't think this is considered his best.
- 10:42Speaker 2: I don't think it's certa how Pacino's best. I think
- 10:46Speaker 2: the biggest thing him and Stone did was probably Scarface.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Yeah. I I was surprised to see how much shit
- 10:57Speaker 1: this movie took. It's like fifty I think, But yes,
- 11:04Speaker 1: but I think it's kind of the caliber at these
- 11:07Speaker 1: the filmmaker, especially the filmmaker I don't even put as much.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Pressure on the cast as much as Oliver Stone and
- 11:19Speaker 2: sort of the the direction he takes with a film
- 11:23Speaker 2: like this, because it is as much as he kind
- 11:27Speaker 2: of pushes into the kind of that culture. I don't
- 11:31Speaker 2: know if he really makes an impact on what the
- 11:34Speaker 2: film overall is is trying to get across. And I
- 11:38Speaker 2: think that's kind of what I dealt. What I was
- 11:40Speaker 2: kind of dealing with in this rewatch was okay, but
- 11:45Speaker 2: what like what are we? What are we doing?
- 11:47Speaker 1: Like?
- 11:48Speaker 2: What are we? What are we trying to get to?
- 11:52Speaker 2: But now this really beam and creaming thing has really
- 11:55Speaker 2: got me, Like I.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Feel like it's a I will say, what's got you feeling?
- 12:01Speaker 2: Like? What I mean? I feel like I don't know
- 12:03Speaker 2: if I want to go to church or I just
- 12:05Speaker 2: want to hide in my closet and masturbate. But then
- 12:09Speaker 2: I think Jamie Fox has that sex appeal.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Yeah, especially in ninety eight or ninety nine. I keep mixing,
- 12:16Speaker 1: mixing it up. Let me, let me verify it. I
- 12:18Speaker 1: think it's ninety it is ninety nine, it is nineteen
- 12:20Speaker 1: ninety nine. Yeah, I will say after watching this two
- 12:26Speaker 1: hours and forty two minute runtime too. Yeah, that is
- 12:29Speaker 1: when I watch.
- 12:30Speaker 2: The director's cut, which is which is weirdly a bit shorter,
- 12:34Speaker 2: h which is two hours and like thirty That is
- 12:36Speaker 2: weird something minutes.
- 12:37Speaker 1: I know you don't hear about that too.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Well, listen your copy that you gave me. There is
- 12:44Speaker 2: a difference of like two hundred and fifty something minutes
- 12:46Speaker 2: and two hundred and sixty something minutes. But the director's
- 12:48Speaker 2: cut is shorter. And I know for Zack Nider fans,
- 12:52Speaker 2: we just blew some minds.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's the truth. Yeah, I I will say this.
- 12:59Speaker 1: We've talked about this because we it's September's episode the
- 13:03Speaker 1: football season is underway. It's festive like we do a
- 13:08Speaker 1: lot of football movies. In September last year we did Rudy,
- 13:11Speaker 1: for example, And we've talked about Friday Night Lights are
- 13:15Speaker 1: Drinking with.
- 13:15Speaker 2: PG version yeah version, we now have advanced to the
- 13:20Speaker 2: rated R version.
- 13:22Speaker 1: I will acknowledge the flaws in this film. I think
- 13:26Speaker 1: it's my favorite football movie now. Oh really, Okay, and
- 13:30Speaker 1: that's why I was so more than Draft Day. Yeah,
- 13:34Speaker 1: I watched Draft Day every year, but that does not
- 13:37Speaker 1: does not mean it's good. Yeah, and fair enough. We'll
- 13:42Speaker 1: probably get into a discussion about this. For me, it
- 13:46Speaker 1: is Friday Night Lights versus Any Given Sunday, And where
- 13:51Speaker 1: I think the two are very distinct is that Friday
- 13:56Speaker 1: Night Lights has the story. It has a heart and
- 14:00Speaker 1: soul that any Given Sunday does not have. Yes, But
- 14:04Speaker 1: what I liked so much about Any Given Sunday is
- 14:08Speaker 1: it it's probably the most realistic football movie that I've watched.
- 14:13Speaker 2: I haven't get down and dirty and gritty.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I jotted it down. I was paying attention. Okay, the
- 14:19Speaker 1: first football scene, you know, we open the movie opens
- 14:22Speaker 1: during a game? Yeah, pretty much. That's twenty three minutes.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Twenty three minutes.
- 14:27Speaker 2: When Cap goes down played by Tennis Quade. Yeah, and
- 14:30Speaker 2: then the second the backup to him goes down, Yeah,
- 14:34Speaker 2: and Will played by Jamie Foxx.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:38Speaker 2: And then did you know he makes the girl screaming?
- 14:41Speaker 1: I do now, I do now, Amen. I've thought it
- 14:45Speaker 1: was screaming for twenty seven years since this movie.
- 14:49Speaker 2: And I feel like, should I listen to the whole
- 14:51Speaker 2: song because screaming I feel like is in there, but anyway,
- 14:55Speaker 2: go ahead.
- 14:55Speaker 1: But yes, but then we go, we have the they
- 15:00Speaker 1: lose the game, and we have this little downtime, but
- 15:03Speaker 1: there's really not all that much time before we're back
- 15:07Speaker 1: on the fucking field again.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:08Speaker 1: No, And I mean it is, it is, really.
- 15:10Speaker 2: I'm mistaken. I think it's they've lost three and then
- 15:13Speaker 2: that ends up begining fourth in a row and there's
- 15:15Speaker 2: only three games left before the.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Playoffs, and we spend a lot of this movie on
- 15:21Speaker 1: the field in those games.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:24Speaker 1: I also felt like the dynamics thematically very accurate, like
- 15:30Speaker 1: the tension between a general manager and a head coach,
- 15:33Speaker 1: and a head coach and a player, and you see
- 15:36Speaker 1: the young up and comer versus the grizzled vet and
- 15:40Speaker 1: a lot of the themes that that Stone touches on
- 15:43Speaker 1: in this movie are pretty hit, pretty close to home.
- 15:46Speaker 2: And there's a lot about well I should say a lot,
- 15:49Speaker 2: but there are definitely elements of race.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Too, Yeah, because sexism.
- 15:54Speaker 2: There is a great scene I think where Jamie Foxx
- 15:58Speaker 2: does his best to go toe to toe with Pacino.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Is it the lunch scene.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Yes, to explain, I like that what you guys rely
- 16:06Speaker 2: on for us and what you are trying to do.
- 16:10Speaker 2: And I really liked it, and and.
- 16:12Speaker 1: It's one of my favorite scenes. And the like Pacino's
- 16:16Speaker 1: locker room speech near the end about like living or die,
- 16:19Speaker 1: and I thought it was very good too. But as
- 16:21Speaker 1: far as like that was the one, like we'll get
- 16:25Speaker 1: into this a little bit more, but like the dialogue
- 16:28Speaker 1: and story wise, I don't think any given Sunday is
- 16:32Speaker 1: I think it's a little too big for its breeches.
- 16:34Speaker 1: But that was the one scene that I was like, Okay,
- 16:39Speaker 1: I kind of like took me out of I was
- 16:43Speaker 1: just in that scene at that moment, you're just kind
- 16:45Speaker 1: of glued to the screen, You're magnetized by her. Yeah,
- 16:51Speaker 1: so it's.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Very Charleston shows up and yeah, it's there's that, so
- 16:59Speaker 2: I I feel like there's a there's a great beauty
- 17:03Speaker 2: to that. But then as he's as as Jamie Fox,
- 17:06Speaker 2: as Willie Beeman is trying to present it to coach,
- 17:10Speaker 2: which I don't know about you, but you know, but
- 17:12Speaker 2: you know, did an HBO film about Joe Paterno he
- 17:15Speaker 2: was Joe Paterno.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember. I never saw that, which.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Makes me kind of like always think about that.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Yeah. But also did Two for the Money, so that's
- 17:25Speaker 1: true some football movies, that's true. Mount Rushmore of al
- 17:29Speaker 1: pacin Over.
- 17:30Speaker 2: I think he also Caught a Ball and Invincible with
- 17:33Speaker 2: Mark Wahlberg if you remember.
- 17:34Speaker 1: I don't remember, but I'll take yourr.
- 17:36Speaker 2: No. No, his name was Clarice Stanmingworth. Okay, all right, yeah, yeah,
- 17:41Speaker 2: from uh from Yale, and but I love I love
- 17:46Speaker 2: those scenes because they're kind of hashing it out and
- 17:49Speaker 2: it is kind of the old versus the new. Yeah,
- 17:51Speaker 2: But there's also I think there is a piece of
- 17:54Speaker 2: it that I think Bachino has, like where he's like,
- 17:59Speaker 2: you know what, you're talented, but you're stupid. But I
- 18:03Speaker 2: also think Beaman has a point on where you rely
- 18:09Speaker 2: on us black men to carry you there.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Which is a very real thing.
- 18:16Speaker 2: The tea still to this absolutely, and I feel like
- 18:19Speaker 2: Charlton Heston is the Jerry Jones. I think he kind
- 18:24Speaker 2: of represents the Jerry Jones of the NFL back then.
- 18:31Speaker 2: I don't quite I don't quite connect where all of
- 18:34Speaker 2: a sudden Cameron Diaz is in trouble. I don't That
- 18:38Speaker 2: seems kind of like what she's even says, what the
- 18:41Speaker 2: fuck happened? But it is very much of a respect
- 18:46Speaker 2: between the coach and the owner. And now things have changed,
- 18:50Speaker 2: business has changed, and money always influences everything.
- 18:55Speaker 1: And that's where I do feel like so I kind
- 18:59Speaker 1: of felt some of the letterboxed reviews were kind of crazy,
- 19:02Speaker 1: and some of the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes were a
- 19:05Speaker 1: little crazy, because I feel like, if you're a football fan,
- 19:10Speaker 1: this movie checks a lot of boxes. It does feel
- 19:13Speaker 1: like I saw one review that was like, this feels
- 19:16Speaker 1: like a two two hour, forty two minutes snort of cocaine,
- 19:20Speaker 1: just a rush, just NonStop, and I can I can
- 19:23Speaker 1: get that, but like, if you're not, there were a
- 19:28Speaker 1: lot of there were a lot of reviews from people
- 19:30Speaker 1: that were not football fans that were just kind of like,
- 19:33Speaker 1: this is what is this like but too much? Yeah,
- 19:38Speaker 1: like I and I get it to a certain extent.
- 19:41Speaker 1: But to me, I was watching this feeling like Oliver
- 19:46Speaker 1: Stone seems to have a great respect for football and
- 19:49Speaker 1: a deep love of football. Because a lot of this
- 19:52Speaker 1: is thematically. You know, you can kind of pick up
- 19:56Speaker 1: on a scene if you're familiar with the inner workings
- 19:59Speaker 1: of the NFL. Yeah, you can pick up in a
- 20:01Speaker 1: scene where you know, Cameron Diaz's character is told like, oh,
- 20:06Speaker 1: you're breaking the rules. We need you to come in
- 20:08Speaker 1: on a meeting and it's like, yeah, you know the tension. Yeah,
- 20:12Speaker 1: Like you kind of pick up on some of that
- 20:14Speaker 1: stuff where you don't really need an explanation if you
- 20:17Speaker 1: don't have that built in well of knowledge. I can
- 20:20Speaker 1: see how it comes across as a bit of a mess.
- 20:23Speaker 2: It does seem, and it does seem to come out
- 20:25Speaker 2: of nowhere, like she's she's butting up with them, and
- 20:28Speaker 2: then all of a sudden, the tables are turned. But
- 20:31Speaker 2: there hasn't been too much mention of the ship she's
- 20:35Speaker 2: involved in. Yeah, and between the beginning and and that
- 20:39Speaker 2: comes towards the end, I mean it's towards the I
- 20:42Speaker 2: think the last game yeah, when he when she's kind
- 20:45Speaker 2: of hosting.
- 20:46Speaker 1: And then I'm I'm just like, you know, if you're
- 20:48Speaker 1: not familiar with football, do you even really know what's
- 20:51Speaker 1: happening between Aaron Eckhart and Al Pacino? Like are you
- 20:55Speaker 1: understanding what the offensive coordinator does?
- 20:58Speaker 2: And are also of he's Aaron Rickhart's character is ready,
- 21:05Speaker 2: he's head coach material. Yeah, and this quote unquote old man.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Yeah to get out of the way. Yeah. So like
- 21:14Speaker 1: I get I get it. But for me, I never
- 21:19Speaker 1: got the impression that Oliver Stone didn't know what he
- 21:23Speaker 1: was talking about.
- 21:24Speaker 2: I feel like he kind of dove in, which, by
- 21:26Speaker 2: the way, a kudos to him because he plays one
- 21:28Speaker 2: of the announcers along with Barry Barry Switzer.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Switzer which there's a lot of old football coaches, a
- 21:35Speaker 1: lot of.
- 21:35Speaker 2: The opposing coaches and there, yeah, a real deal.
- 21:38Speaker 1: The coaches for the opponents are all actual and I think.
- 21:42Speaker 2: It's worth noting that. I feel like, obviously with what
- 21:47Speaker 2: it wants to tackle, no pun intended, they had to
- 21:51Speaker 2: make up names because NFL would not give them, would
- 21:54Speaker 2: not give Oliver Stone. So you have Miami's Sharks they
- 21:57Speaker 2: have very much. But he played but there's a lot
- 22:00Speaker 2: of NFL people that are involved in that, and I
- 22:06Speaker 2: appreciate that. And I also and I told you this
- 22:10Speaker 2: when I first watched it or rewatching it, is that
- 22:13Speaker 2: the action on the field, the pain, the hurt, the
- 22:20Speaker 2: playing even when you shouldn't is very much a real.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Guys go through that. Doctors do shady thing.
- 22:29Speaker 2: LT kind of plays the guy that is sort of like, hey, listen,
- 22:33Speaker 2: if I can just do this, and even at the
- 22:36Speaker 2: end where you know he's worth a million dollars, they're
- 22:40Speaker 2: willing to do it and it's scary. And that kind
- 22:43Speaker 2: of plays into Matthew Modine and James Wood's characters of
- 22:46Speaker 2: the doctors. What are you willing to do? What are
- 22:49Speaker 2: you willing to tell them? Hiding stuff? That stuff is
- 22:53Speaker 2: interesting to me because it is a behind the scenes thing,
- 22:56Speaker 2: just like when e Loo Cole j is like, I
- 22:59Speaker 2: want to do this because if I don't get this,
- 23:01Speaker 2: then I don't get this money. And that's sort of
- 23:06Speaker 2: what it kind of comes down to. Winning is winning.
- 23:08Speaker 2: But these guys are in it because, as we know,
- 23:11Speaker 2: their careers could be within five to ten years and
- 23:14Speaker 2: it's done. You are done this. Peyton Manning, Tom Brady.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Shit is not that is not the norm, and so
- 23:24Speaker 2: I really appreciated that kind of stuff and the fact
- 23:29Speaker 2: that Willie Beeman can make these women creamen is really impressive.
- 23:34Speaker 2: I have to come back to it, but I love that.
- 23:38Speaker 2: I love that approach to it because it is and
- 23:42Speaker 2: as with trading and everything else, it is business. At
- 23:46Speaker 2: the end of the day. These owners don't give a shit.
- 23:49Speaker 2: It's about trading.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Which I thought was another thing. I don't know if
- 23:55Speaker 1: if you're not a die hard fan, I don't know,
- 23:59Speaker 1: do you pick up on the scene where Cameron Diaz
- 24:01Speaker 1: is up in the owner's suite and she's looking around
- 24:05Speaker 1: and realizing nobody else there is paying attention to the game.
- 24:08Speaker 1: They're all talking to one another like that in and
- 24:11Speaker 1: of itself is a nice little touch, and I felt
- 24:15Speaker 1: like that was kind of a reflection of the NFL
- 24:21Speaker 1: or professional football. I guess I should say in America
- 24:26Speaker 1: that this movie kind of gives a wink and a
- 24:29Speaker 1: nod to now. I also think where the movie suffers
- 24:36Speaker 1: is in its ambition, because any given Sunday does not
- 24:42Speaker 1: just focus on one aspect of it. While to me
- 24:46Speaker 1: it does kind of feel like a love letter and
- 24:48Speaker 1: an accurate portrayal of professional football. It's also like, man,
- 24:53Speaker 1: you're trying to touch on everything in this one film,
- 24:57Speaker 1: the aging vet, the rookie up and comer, the young
- 25:01Speaker 1: player that sees success early, and hey, coach out, the
- 25:04Speaker 1: head coach out to pasture a woman in a man's world. Yeah,
- 25:10Speaker 1: basically the injury stuff, the medical stuff that that this
- 25:16Speaker 1: movie says money and just locker room dynamics. Yeah, and
- 25:22Speaker 1: if you're going to I think some of that stuff
- 25:27Speaker 1: probably could have been hammered home a little bit more
- 25:31Speaker 1: if we didn't spend like thirty minutes on each game.
- 25:35Speaker 1: So while I think the football aspect of it is
- 25:38Speaker 1: the strength of the film, and I think thematically the
- 25:42Speaker 1: film does kind of touch on give a little bit
- 25:44Speaker 1: of a little nugget here and there on this, a
- 25:47Speaker 1: little nugget here and there on that if you're not
- 25:50Speaker 1: really perceptive enough, it's kind of hard to keep up
- 25:54Speaker 1: with all that because the moments of like real dialogue
- 25:59Speaker 1: and character development and all that kind of feel few
- 26:03Speaker 1: and far between between all over the craziness. And for instance,
- 26:11Speaker 1: I love the idea of any given Sunday as sort
- 26:15Speaker 1: of the rise and fall and rise of Willy Beaman,
- 26:20Speaker 1: because when we meet Willy Beaman, he's buried on the
- 26:23Speaker 1: depth chart. He rises to prominence, but then the team
- 26:27Speaker 1: doesn't respond to him, he's not getting along with his coach.
- 26:31Speaker 1: It kind of feels like, you know, he's taken down
- 26:35Speaker 1: a notch. But then he ultimately lands in the spot
- 26:38Speaker 1: where the light bulb kind of goes off and he
- 26:41Speaker 1: eventually gets to a spot where the team is playing
- 26:44Speaker 1: hard for him and he's playing for his team and.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Comes into that too, which I will say I I
- 26:53Speaker 2: I kind of appreciate it, but it does come out
- 26:55Speaker 2: of the blue and it's certainly not explored further. But
- 27:00Speaker 2: the wife, yeah, basically telling him he cannot retire or
- 27:06Speaker 2: in Holly plays Denis Quades.
- 27:07Speaker 1: One, which is yeah, and which is is great.
- 27:11Speaker 2: But that's just thrown in there and then it's it's gone.
- 27:14Speaker 1: It's another element of it where it's like, okay, well,
- 27:17Speaker 1: you know, the football lifestyle and can give so much
- 27:23Speaker 1: and sometimes like you hear about it all the time
- 27:27Speaker 1: with like these players coaches that end up divorced, and
- 27:30Speaker 1: it's like, you know, it's it's hard on the home life.
- 27:35Speaker 1: And we even see that with Willie Beeman and his
- 27:38Speaker 1: girlfriend too. Okay, yeah that too. Yeah, I read the
- 27:44Speaker 1: news so but that kind of goes to what I'm
- 27:47Speaker 1: talking about is like, this takes on so many aspects
- 27:51Speaker 1: of professional football that it's kind of hard to give
- 27:54Speaker 1: it all time and still have these killer football sequences.
- 27:59Speaker 2: And I think the movie does not to be doesn't
- 28:02Speaker 2: need to be longer, but I do think it really
- 28:08Speaker 2: is trying to eat more than it than it than
- 28:13Speaker 2: it needs to because it is trying to touch on everything.
- 28:16Speaker 2: The thing is, the attention is not there, and it
- 28:19Speaker 2: can't be, especially for a film.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I I agree the the the arc of
- 28:27Speaker 1: Willie Beeman, though it kind of it kind of happens
- 28:32Speaker 1: very quickly, and when you have stuff like that where
- 28:34Speaker 1: it's like, Okay, we get the point he's he's cocky
- 28:39Speaker 1: and he's young, but then all of a sudden, it's
- 28:42Speaker 1: like that one speech from Al Pacino and now oh
- 28:44Speaker 1: he's on board and everybody's bought in. And that's where
- 28:47Speaker 1: I'm like, all right, that's not that's like, that's something
- 28:52Speaker 1: in real life that takes time to win that buy in.
- 28:55Speaker 2: And by the last game and they're talking and he's
- 28:58Speaker 2: a blind piano player.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Yeah, it is very.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just confusing. It takes it takes you out
- 29:04Speaker 2: of it really.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Yeah, this five year long movie. Yeah, it was very.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Uh like I Got a Woman. I mean it's it's
- 29:12Speaker 2: it's crazy, but there's real. But I will say there's real.
- 29:18Speaker 2: I mean there's real progress in what Jamie Fox was
- 29:20Speaker 2: trying to do from like Boomerang? Yes, was he in Boomerang?
- 29:24Speaker 2: I don't know that's any Murphy movie. Yeah, what's the
- 29:27Speaker 2: other Booty Call?
- 29:28Speaker 1: Let's go without Booty Call. But I do. And that's
- 29:32Speaker 1: where I kind of feel like this was I I
- 29:35Speaker 1: get the idea of like wanting to paint an accurate
- 29:38Speaker 1: picture of the NFL, but it's almost as if it's
- 29:42Speaker 1: there's just too much to really explore. There's too much
- 29:46Speaker 1: that you can flesh out in two hours and forty
- 29:49Speaker 1: two minutes. Yeah, And that's where I think the movie suffers.
- 29:52Speaker 1: The story suffers from from Any Given Sunday compared to
- 29:57Speaker 1: another movie like Friday Night Lights, where it's a little
- 29:59Speaker 1: more singular focused and there's a little more heart and
- 30:03Speaker 1: soul in it. But maybe it's not. It doesn't. The
- 30:06Speaker 1: thing about Any Given Sunday is like it feels like
- 30:09Speaker 1: you feel the tension of the small home. Yeah. Yeah, well,
- 30:14Speaker 1: and I think.
- 30:15Speaker 2: There's legit legitimacy in it, but we don't have enough
- 30:19Speaker 2: time to explore everything, and so instead of picking and choosing,
- 30:24Speaker 2: I think Oliver Stone is trying to do everything and
- 30:27Speaker 2: that is very tough, especially if you want to do
- 30:31Speaker 2: all of these different aspects before you get on the field,
- 30:35Speaker 2: and then you still want to really kind of dive
- 30:38Speaker 2: in to the football action of the rough and tough Yeah,
- 30:45Speaker 2: the rough and toughness of the game, the injury aspect,
- 30:49Speaker 2: and the people putting their bodies on the line because
- 30:52Speaker 2: maybe they can get a million dollars because they want
- 30:54Speaker 2: to feed their families. I mean it, Yeah, there's there's
- 30:57Speaker 2: very valid points to all of it, but can you
- 31:04Speaker 2: can you make it resonate within this kind of larger
- 31:07Speaker 2: story that we're trying to tell, which I think kind
- 31:10Speaker 2: of falls onto the head coach and him kind of
- 31:13Speaker 2: being weeded out of the game that he's loved for
- 31:17Speaker 2: so much, which right now, when I watch that, I
- 31:21Speaker 2: think of like a Bill Belichick kind of thing. Yeah, sure,
- 31:25Speaker 2: you know, I mean it's it's I think it's tough,
- 31:27Speaker 2: not to.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Yep, I'm with you. The only other note that I had,
- 31:32Speaker 1: and we can leave it at this. The cast in this,
- 31:37Speaker 1: I think is is phenomenal. I like Pacino in this role.
- 31:40Speaker 1: I didn't think I would like Pacino in this role,
- 31:43Speaker 1: but I did. I like Cameron Diaz.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Did you like when Pacino said, how about that assold.
- 31:50Speaker 1: You like that? That big big it's about LT?
- 31:55Speaker 2: What are talking about Elizabeth Berkeley from Saved by the Bill.
- 31:58Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 31:59Speaker 1: I don't know. I did like Jamie Fox in this,
- 32:03Speaker 1: but I was kind of taken aback by some of
- 32:06Speaker 1: the football guys, like Lawrence Taylor was pretty good in this,
- 32:10Speaker 1: and then I really like Jim Brown as did you.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Say Lawrence Taylor is sort of Lawrence Taylor in this movie?
- 32:16Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 32:17Speaker 2: Probably, But but I think part of what works really
- 32:21Speaker 2: in this film with LT is that when he's telling
- 32:24Speaker 2: you of what he's willing to do to provide to
- 32:29Speaker 2: him for his family, I think is a conversation that
- 32:32Speaker 2: happens more and more and more, and they're willing to
- 32:36Speaker 2: risk it for the money because it is very much
- 32:44Speaker 2: a part of strike. When the iron toot, if I
- 32:48Speaker 2: have a chance to get a million dollars for my
- 32:50Speaker 2: family and there's a chance I'm going to be paralyzed.
- 32:54Speaker 2: He's going to do it, and he's just I think
- 32:57Speaker 2: he's just one character of many who have who have
- 33:01Speaker 2: done that. I wanted to make a joke that Dennisquay
- 33:04Speaker 2: was based on Dann Marino, because Dan Marino had concussions
- 33:08Speaker 2: all the way up to I think past this movie. Yeah,
- 33:11Speaker 2: and Dennis Wade sort of kind of could be a
- 33:15Speaker 2: Dann Marino.
- 33:16Speaker 1: But he Yeah, he took that shot that was like
- 33:21Speaker 1: literally the John Elway helicopter hit. Yeah, so maybe he
- 33:25Speaker 1: was supposed to.
- 33:26Speaker 2: But even like to your point, like I really am
- 33:29Speaker 2: invested in that conversation where he has with Pacino's character
- 33:33Speaker 2: of like he's scared. Yeah, he is scared that something happened.
- 33:37Speaker 2: And I think that is very legitimate, But we don't
- 33:42Speaker 2: there's not enough focus on it because then we gotta
- 33:44Speaker 2: we gotta move to this game, right into that premise
- 33:48Speaker 2: and into that character. I think Oliver Stone had very
- 33:53Speaker 2: good intentions. I just think it I think for it,
- 33:57Speaker 2: even for a filmmaker like him, I think it's it's
- 33:59Speaker 2: it was very much of an overload of trying to
- 34:04Speaker 2: encompass everything the NFL offers, good or bad, and then
- 34:09Speaker 2: make that into something where you can connect with it.
- 34:13Speaker 2: You get pieces of it, but you don't there's still
- 34:16Speaker 2: not a full picture.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Kind of I think it was. I think it was
- 34:20Speaker 1: overly ambitious, but I ultimately give him a lot of
- 34:23Speaker 1: credit for making something that was more realistic in a
- 34:29Speaker 1: genre that is loaded with a lot of like Disney
- 34:32Speaker 1: style underdog stories like it's this.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Is not this is not your inspirational like I think
- 34:40Speaker 2: of like Invincible Rudy things like.
- 34:43Speaker 1: That, this is not for the Titans radio.
- 34:45Speaker 2: Yes, was We Are Marshall's inspiration? I guess it was.
- 34:49Speaker 2: I mean the plane went down, but I.
- 34:51Speaker 1: Never saw We Are Marshall. Maybe maybe we should do
- 34:53Speaker 1: that next September. Oh yeah, maybe I'll Giants, I'll or
- 34:59Speaker 1: Little Giant. We could do. Yeah, that's a more serious
- 35:02Speaker 1: football movie.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Like yeah, they started through the story.
- 35:05Speaker 1: I believe, like any given Sunday correct, All right, well
- 35:11Speaker 1: that's gonna do it for us. Did you give this
- 35:13Speaker 1: a star rating?
- 35:15Speaker 2: No, but I would probably give it like three out
- 35:18Speaker 2: of five.
- 35:19Speaker 1: I gave it four because I just I fucking love
- 35:21Speaker 1: football and this is the only movie that has gotten
- 35:24Speaker 1: close to the feeling of actually being around football.
- 35:28Speaker 2: I'm with you. I like I at least appreciate the
- 35:34Speaker 2: dirtiness of the business. There is a thing about players
- 35:42Speaker 2: and trying to do what you can do for as
- 35:44Speaker 2: long as you can and make the most money you can,
- 35:46Speaker 2: and the contracts and everything else. But there is also
- 35:50Speaker 2: the coach element, the owner element, the money element, and
- 35:59Speaker 2: it does its best. It does its best in two
- 36:02Speaker 2: and a half hours to try and get you there.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, I can't think of a better way to
- 36:08Speaker 1: kick off the football season.
- 36:09Speaker 2: So no, I can't. Willie Beeman and Creaman.
- 36:12Speaker 1: There's there's a lot of dis in this movie too.
- 36:15Speaker 2: Yeah and asses Yeah, Dixon, yep. But if you're I
- 36:20Speaker 2: mean listen, Oliver Stone says, Hey, you want to come
- 36:22Speaker 2: into the locker room, that's what it is. You're Yeah,
- 36:25Speaker 2: you're gonna get a lot of black stallions shoved up
- 36:27Speaker 2: in your face.
- 36:29Speaker 1: And on that note, that's gonna do it for this
- 36:31Speaker 1: episode of movie review rewind Thank you guys for tuning in.
