- 0:15[SPEAKER_03]: What's up, welcome in.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_03]: It is that time of year, not week that time of year, because here August 5th, the Oklahoma sooner is hit the practice field to officially open fall camp to build towards the 26th season.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_03]: We're here to break it all down on the sooner's on SI.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_03]: Podcast on myself, Ryan Chapman, trying to relax.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_03]: through a very busy local media day on Tuesday, where we got to talk to all the defensive assistants, all the offensive assistants, 12 players, plus, obviously, britmanables, and been our buckle up at the podium.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_03]: To break it all now, we got the whole crew here.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_03]: We've got our fearlessly, or who made the trek down from Tulsa to be a greatestest with his presence.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_03]: Now, thank you for all the help as always, the great John Hoover, who have how you do it, you're the biggest trek of all of us getting up and back
- 1:07[SPEAKER_03]: turn by.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's not as easy for me as it used to be fellas, but it was good.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_01]: It was good to be in Norman, good to be on campus, good to be in the facility, and good to see those faces again.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_01]: So, not just the coaches, not just the players, but my colleagues face to face.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_01]: I've do a lot of remote work these days, but man, I'd like to be back for at least one day.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_03]: I was joking with some of our buddies.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_03]: This is like the sports media version of, I almost felt like we need to get the chalkboard out of like first day of the season, basically is everyone's getting back together.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_03]: Our man Carson Field was in the mix as well.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_03]: Carson, I'm sorry.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_03]: We had to cut into the golf game a little bit yesterday, although I'm not sure it was, it might have been too hot.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_03]: I want to be anywhere, but at the stadium under the air conditioning, as we were talking to everybody.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the summer of playing golf just about every day.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's coming to an end, but that's a good thing.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: Love the football season.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's busy for all four of us plus breakety, but wouldn't wish for anything else.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's a blast.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yesterday was great.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_00]: Seeing the players in their jerseys field in questions made it feel like we are just around the corner.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm pumped.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: Can't wait.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we were all, I think peaking down toward the field trying to just be like, ah, it almost is here for sure.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_03]: A man who just a fair warrant to everyone might be a smidge distracted.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_03]: We were recording right now at 308 PM on Wednesday, which means Pete Crow Armstrong is of the midst of his scorching hot summer.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_03]: So if Ryan Avers suddenly, it's not lag.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_03]: It's not lag of attention.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_03]: He's just much like I was watching Chelsea preseason this morning.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_03]: During the morning show, Avery right now is powering through comes Dodgers and we appreciate you for that.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's it's been a fun week for for Cubs fans and for Dodgers fans, even though they're, you know, hopefully about to get swept here as I watch the cubs move up on a wild pitch here, but it's wouldn't sure how to spaceball season was going to go after the a couple of 10 game losing streaks earlier, but as our friend Eddie Rodo said yesterday, you know, you
- 3:09[SPEAKER_03]: you lose me and then you pull me right back in and that's pretty much what the cubs have done this year listen at any time you get the cookie monster to come and sing the seventh and you stretch I don't really care who you are I'm probably in and the cookie monster's favorite player is PCA so he is he is all of us right now we will get to the football here in one second I just have to
- 3:39[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, that's just all the above.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_03]: All right, let's lay out the week here for you.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_03]: Then we'll hit everything from yesterday.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_03]: Tuesday, we did have media day, Wednesday, first day of practice.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_03]: If you're on Twitter, you saw the video of Oklahoma making their way to Everest indoor, which will upset Kip Lewis.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_03]: We'll talk about that here in a little bit.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_03]: Friday, the expectation is we might be able to get out there, get a little peek at some of the happenings and probably get some more interviews talk to some of the guys.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_03]: We didn't get to top two on yesterday.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_03]: So if you're looking for any of that concept, first off, we have tons of videos up on YouTube, just search John Hoover Media.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_03]: That's who's YouTube page that has all of our videos, all the press conference stuff, certainly from Ben Arbuckle, Brett Venables, and we're clipping some stuff and giving you the goods as far as that goes.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_03]: We'll have more video up there.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_03]: on Friday as well, but yesterday, I mean, guys, who didn't we talk to as we said, all the coaches on the player side, 12 guys, Owen Heinecki, Cole Sullivan in the mix, got to link it with us and say it's a Tania, Tate Santa, a bunch of guys, but
- 4:43[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, let's categorize this into like the newsiness and then the interest.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_03]: I think the biggest news item that came out of yesterday, Emmett Jones gave our guy Brady Trump them.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_03]: But if an update last time we talked about why you see Retrella Harris, it was a SEC media day.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_03]: Britain will said he was full speed ramping up in.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_03]: Emmett Jones did say he had a little bit of a setback.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_03]: So if you're out there practice, certainly today, which no was out there today.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_03]: But maybe on Friday, he might still be running with the trainers things like that.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_03]: But Emmett Jones also,
- 5:11[SPEAKER_03]: turned around in the same breath kind of looks like it not a big deal just a little setback just FYI as far as that goes which made me immediately wonder Ryan specifically I know that you and I and of course I were tired of this it made me wonder if that was maybe Emmett Jones who has suffered himself some PTSD with injuries in this fight or see if a room just be like FYI nobody freaked out we're expecting him to be ramped up and full speed by the end of fall camp but if you see him off to the side on Friday it's gonna be okay
- 5:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, of course, at that position, everybody's going to freak out when they see stuff like that.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_02]: So probably good on him at Jones, although I thought it was interesting that later Brent Vinnables was asked about Torel Harris directly and he's ready to go all this stuff.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_02]: And then Brent Vinnables certainly didn't do anything to dissuade that.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_02]: So I wonder Brent Vinnables knew that Emmett had, you know, let the cat out of the bag.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_02]: a little bit there, but that's going to be one of the positions that I'm really looking forward to see it on Friday is just what is that receiver group look like, especially, you know, some of the younger guys who were maybe didn't play as big a rolls last year who sort of forces themselves into that mix because if trial Harris,
- 6:29[SPEAKER_02]: you know, God forbid isn't ready to go in an opening in the opening game, you know, who is it going to be behind Isaiah Sotania and presumably Parker Livingstone, who's also been a little bit banged up.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_02]: So it's good.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_02]: That's a fascinating position group here going into preseason camp.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think I named it a pop-up.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, go ahead, who's
- 6:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I'll tell you this in terms of Trial Harris.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: The last thing Oklahoma fans want to see is the words, oh, you wide receiver, August, and setback.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_01]: PTSD is the right description for.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we keep hearing that every year, every spring, every, every, every fall, every fall.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, and Gibson, Nick Anderson, on and on and on and on.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_01]: It's like five guys over the course of three years.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, okay, that's enough setbacks on the wider receivers.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: So I feel for all you fans who are waiting for trial Harris to have a breakout season.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not calling it, but I'm kind of calling it, geez, at this point.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_01]: Port, Port, you come to all you and as a transfer or shoot, you're pretty here, having all
- 7:35[SPEAKER_01]: I'm kidding, it's not over.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_03]: Come on, like this.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_03]: It's one of those things though.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_03]: It's like I think we all look glad and go if you want to, if you want to be nervous, if you want to be like, oh my gosh, here we go again.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_03]: I think everyone totally understands it and I have to want to do a certain exit car, some image, Jones himself is going to be like,
- 7:50[SPEAKER_03]: could I catch a break?
- 7:52[SPEAKER_03]: Could I just get some of these guys to come in and just have a smooth offseason all the way through, which I think part of that is why there's such an appreciation for Isaiah Cetane.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_03]: It's some of the britvinnables I was talking about Carson, right?
- 8:05[SPEAKER_03]: He's a guy plays bigger than his position.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_03]: I think that coming on 2024 to have Cetane roll all the way through 2025 and being able to do all the work he was able to do this offseason.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_03]: I think that's just another reason why britvinnables have it judged all those guys love Isaiah Cetane.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, it's brutal luck, like who was mentioning Nick Anderson, Jayden Gibson, I mean, Giovanni Gibson last year.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_00]: We finally got to see late in the years, some of his capabilities but never fully ramped into it just because of the injury that kept him out for the first four or five games.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_00]: So it's been a lot of bad luck for him at Jones since taking this job.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: But to your point, Satan, yeah, I mean, you got to love how reliable he was last year, stayed injury free largely.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: So that's huge Parker Livingstone.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: We haven't heard anything negative about his health.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: That's really big too.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_00]: You have to feel like and say what that's tight in.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: So, I mean, it will be a big loss if he has to miss a couple of games.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_00]: Troll here is obviously fantastic at Virginia last year.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: Really kind of broke onto the scene, all conference pick.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_00]: So he's a great player, but thankfully your first games against Utah.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_00]: You could try out the scout team and they're going to win by double digits.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_00]: But you have other guys, you have living stones, tanya, you could feel more confident about some of the guys behind them.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like this year.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_00]: So concerning, yes, panic mode probably not yet.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_03]: plenty of time to for Charlie at back up and ramped in, which they'll start that process certainly on Wednesday.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_03]: But for now, let's go back to front.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_03]: We talked to Brett Vinnables last.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_03]: He kind of ended our day and John, I thought it was an interesting vibe from break.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_03]: You can tell he was ready to go, Raren did get after it.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_03]: He was effusive with a lot of his praise on
- 9:46[SPEAKER_03]: a bunch of different position groups throughout the spring, the defensive tackle, it's a lot of them.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_03]: I think you saw him switch into in-season BV, where he's, I imagine him going through the locker room and turning over every single stone, looking for any kind of contentment, any kind of confident, or stuff like that.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_03]: He's like, no, no, no, how do we keep these guys as focused as possible?
- 10:07[SPEAKER_03]: But I think you also saw a guy that I know last offseason, he had told us,
- 10:13[SPEAKER_03]: hot seed stuff.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_03]: I don't feel the pressure.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_03]: I put that pressure on myself type of.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_03]: I think you saw like what was, I don't know if he was anxious to get the year going last year.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_03]: I think he really likes where this team is at, entering this point of the off season.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_03]: You feel like this almost kind of quiet confidence that they're at least a breadman of the size.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_03]: It's going to be able to build off that cost with all playoff appearance last year.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, one thing that stood out to me was something that you could totally expect and predict out of Brent Vennables and that was he got a question about how you're coming off a college football play off what what feels different about this year and my mind I'm thinking
- 10:49[SPEAKER_01]: If you met Brett Vennables, nothing is different for Brent Vennables.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_01]: He is this confident at coming off a ten and three season as he was coming off a six and seven season.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_01]: He's this confident coming off a losing year as a winning year.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_01]: Brent is the same guy every year, every August, he's, there's no change.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_01]: There's no like, hey, we've arrived, you know, we're, we're SEC contender.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_01]: He does not think like that.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_01]: He does not operate like that.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_01]: So that's one of the things that people, when you talk to the players, you talk to the
- 11:20[SPEAKER_01]: That's one of the qualities and that's a rare thing guys.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if anybody on this podcast is able to do that I don't know if any of our listeners are consistently able to do that.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_01]: Brent has a rare quality that he can he can be the same guy and have the same emotions and think the same thoughts
- 11:38[SPEAKER_01]: year to year day to day, but that's what guys say that come to play for him coming to work for him.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_01]: He is the same guy every day no matter what.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_01]: And so I got, I got tickled by that question a little bit, but he's haven't, hey, for him, it's national championship or bust.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't mean that like he's going to be fired or anything like that.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_01]: In his mind, he's thinking, why not us?
- 12:02[SPEAKER_01]: Why can't we win the national championship?
- 12:04[SPEAKER_03]: And he certainly has Miguel Shave's brainwashed and thinking that same way is that one made the rounds.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_03]: But, of course, I think that part of maybe the confidence come into this is, he's laid the foundation on defense, right?
- 12:16[SPEAKER_03]: We're talking a lot about depth guys.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_03]: Who are the tools gonna be?
- 12:20[SPEAKER_03]: What's the rotation it looks like?
- 12:21[SPEAKER_03]: Not questions with the front line guys.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_03]: It's been a hot minute since he had a quarterback coming back, a guy that's had that experience.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_03]: It's been some stealing Gabriel to have a guy year to year.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_03]: And it's been a little bit since he's had,
- 12:33[SPEAKER_03]: What I think they feel like is stability on the offense.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_03]: I think the changes that were made, obviously it tied in, that was one that Oklahoma made.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_03]: Running back, that was one that, you know, to Marco goes to the league, they get a really, really, really highly tattered replacement.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_03]: It just feels like there's not a lot of, not uncertainty and what's gonna happen this year, but uncertainty in their operation of how fall campscarot and how they feel if they're gonna get to a game day, which is not always been the case, even going from year to year, even if Brent approaches things the same way.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, definitely.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he was similarly confident last year at media day.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_00]: I felt like he was a lot more relaxed.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_00]: He felt he seemed very on edge in 2025 when we did this got to talk to him for the first time.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_00]: He seemed more comfortable.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_00]: As Hoops said, same guy.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 13:20[SPEAKER_00]: You look at this team and you're right, there is a lot more stability.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_00]: He praised Yamatir as far as how down to earth he is, how mature he is, how much he's grown, learned from some of those struggles last year.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_00]: Very complimentary of the offensive line, of course, having a good combo of some really good young players, plus Jake Mykula, Mariana Harris, a really good
- 13:40[SPEAKER_00]: which should be a really good line at least.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean there are as many questions.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's a college football team.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_00]: They're still going to be some okay who wins this?
- 13:49[SPEAKER_00]: Who's the number two at this spot?
- 13:51[SPEAKER_00]: But it's a lot more stable seeming which should be a recipe for success.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_03]: And that's to be honest with something too that, like on the defensive side of the ball, you look at Lamar Morgan and the Lee guy coming in again, that's as a result of javelike.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_03]: When I would say it's like a promotion, when a guy that sees hey, I can get hopped up and head off to the league and join Buffalo and things like that.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_03]: And I don't know, I think that my favorite part, or maybe the most insightful part of yesterday Ryan was one of your former colleagues, the great Joe Masato plant guy, I have that plant here for Joe.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_03]: He was kind of asking,
- 14:27[SPEAKER_03]: his growth from year one to year two.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_03]: And then I enjoyed his question to Brent being like, hey, man, you've been in binar buckles exact spot, a super young coordinator who's kind of burst under the scene.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_03]: How do you handle that?
- 14:40[SPEAKER_03]: How do you grow from year to year?
- 14:41[SPEAKER_03]: And as much as we're going to talk about geometry here in a second, as much as we're going to talk about the growth of this offensive line, I almost think a part of this season is going to be defined by
- 14:50[SPEAKER_03]: how much growth was been our buckle able to do from just coming in and trying to learn the ropes to Oklahoma to what you hope is a more fully formed vision of what he wants his Oklahoma offense to look like.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think that's certainly what you would expect in year two because it wasn't just hey, making the leap from Washington state and the different expectations, the different level of athlete that you're, you know, coaching at Oklahoma, but it's the league.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_02]: which a lot of people, you know, we're talking about yesterday as, you know, oh, he's gotten a couple of years under their belts with this, this league.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_02]: What, they figured out the differences and Bill Beaton, both spent a lot of time yesterday talking about it as well.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_02]: And I, I thought it was really interesting, you know, going to John Matier, you just mentioned,
- 15:40[SPEAKER_02]: That, you know, been our buckle talked about John Matier being very involved with all the other position groups on offense and figuring out how those work sort of in the the universe of the quarterback and able to figure out what's going on there and that may seem have such a better understanding holistically.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_02]: of what this offense looks like, and it called me back to some of the stuff that been our buckles that last year about the defense and going hard on that side to figure out, hey, what's what's preventable thinking defensively in these moments and how do you figure out, hey?
- 16:20[SPEAKER_02]: You know, you know, your enemy, you know, as well as yourself and you can exploit weaknesses and, you know, just reminded me of that.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_02]: And I think Ben Arbuckle certainly feels much more comfortable now than he did a year ago, even if he wouldn't admit it for sure.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, I think certainly,
- 16:43[SPEAKER_02]: He knows what's expected of him here and what's expected of this offense to be a whole lot better and feels like he's got a better handle on things and what that's going to take going into year two and John I know this was something that been talked about
- 16:59[SPEAKER_03]: in the spring, which was, yeah, we're always going to look at our offense and try to grow it and things like that.
- 17:04[SPEAKER_03]: And we had heard, you know, obviously the big race that Kelvin Wilson had got and that he was going to take on a bigger role in helping things out.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_03]: But I still think it's really refreshing and really nice.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_03]: If I were in the shoes of an OU fan listening yesterday, I love that bit our buckle was the one offering up like, look around.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_03]: Why wouldn't I?
- 17:22[SPEAKER_03]: ask Bill Biedenbo how he'd construct this running day.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_03]: Why wouldn't I Jason Whitten comes in in all of his years of high level football experience say, how would you block this?
- 17:31[SPEAKER_03]: What we want to do here?
- 17:32[SPEAKER_03]: I think that that's a really refreshing, it's like Brett Vinnable said that like you got to have any go to a certain extent, but it's what he didn't say the exact reason.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_03]: I think you're talking about like the right kind of ego and it sounds like Ben Arbuckle approached this offseason with that.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, a little bit of humility, right?
- 17:48[SPEAKER_01]: He's not coming in here.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_01]: Akalaki knows everything.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_01]: He did, I don't think he did that last year.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_01]: And I think he looks back at last year in the productivity in certain areas, then the lack of productivity in other areas.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_01]: And I think he embraces the idea leans into the idea that he doesn't know everything.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_01]: He's just a young coach.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_01]: He's just a young football coach.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_01]: You could do that.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_01]: who's pretty good at calling plays and he's got a lot to learn and hey look over there there's Kevin Wilson and hey look over there there's Bill Beatonbo these these are guys who have been here have been there as well have done that you know have accomplished things at the highest level at their positions and as offensive coordinators and Wilson's case been off in our Wilson's case has been head coach
- 18:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, lean on those guys.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, look at my run-and-bex host, Dillon McCulloch is my run-and-bex host.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_01]: I like that.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_01]: If I'm Ben Arbock on embracing all that, because he's got a lot of good guys around him who have been in the highest levels of college football, some in the NFL, Dillon McCulloch got to meet him yesterday as well.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_01]: The staff is kind of a little bit of an all-star staff right now.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of a loaded staff.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, if you're Ben Arbock, how can you mess this up?
- 19:01[SPEAKER_01]: by not paying attention or not listening to what those guys tell you.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_03]: It helps too for bit our buckle is while you're taking in all that input to have a guy that's been in your offense for now four years with job material.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_03]: I know that was something else, of course, that was talked about a great deal.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_03]: It's not just rare to have returning quarterbacks you ever, ever year, but to have a guy, even though it's between Washington State and Oklahoma, be in your system for that long.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_03]: I think we've maybe, I'd like to say we've officially made the offseason transition.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_03]: There was so much attention Carson on the mechanics and things like that throughout the spring.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_03]: But I think I kind of want to hear about and hear a little bit of the SEC meeting day and heard a lot more yesterday, especially talking to John Kuzioski.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_03]: It's not just the mechanics, it's the film study and it's being better prepared mentally to just know.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_03]: It's one thing to throw the ball properly, so I think to know when to not throw the football, I think that's one of the next steps for John Metier to take, and judging by what Brad Metables, but our vocal Kuzioski and all of his teammates said, since like John Metier has lived in the film room when you've not seen him in the random spots popping up at a concert in Omaha.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, it seems like John material doesn't have a life just from what we hear about how often he is at the facility.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_00]: We know obviously that's not true, but to your point.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, he is there and on stop.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_00]: It sounds like really studying some of his bad games last year.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_00]: I know he said that some of those rewatches were kind of uncomfortable, whether that's Texas, Alabama and the playoff.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_00]: He said that at Media Day, but hearing from Ben Arbuckle about how he's always had this mindset of I have to be better, whether he's playing great, whether he's playing poorly, and seeing how that's carried on, that's developed, and he's become more mature, maybe a little hard on himself, Ben Arbuckle said.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's led to a lot of this offseason film study, connecting with his new teammates, because obviously there's a lot of film, a bunch of new receivers,
- 20:55[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of Kim, there has to be new chemistry made with those guys in addition to simply working on yourself, fixing those mechanics, fixing just the decision making, being in better tune.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_00]: But it seems like everything we've heard has just been an absolute student in the game, which is really, I think, refreshing to hear for sooner fans.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_03]: And we've talked to a lot of season about the weapons that have been added around them.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_03]: It feels like Ryan, for me over the next month, this is where the rubber beast drove with the offensive line as far as it's all looked good.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_03]: It's all sounded good in theory, everyone's gold star, things like that.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_03]: But now it's time to egg it through fall camp healthy, which has just been something to the offense has been pretty snakebed across the board and the offensive lines of all of them.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_03]: But I'm ready for the mic of a sushi experience and when Jason the Whitten goes out of his way to say,
- 21:43[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, who's one guy outside the tight interim that you're looking forward to seeing plays in the football and he goes Michael Fassou see that you Jason Whitten says that I'm pretty in on that
- 21:52[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_02]: And I got to spend a lot of time yesterday talking to Bill Beanbow, listening to him, talking about his guys and the how good he feels about the depth that they've developed, not only in the front line, but beyond that, I mean, we heard Brent Venibals talking Tampa that, uh, and he fresh your home.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_03]: This leather sofa brings up.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, no.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, no.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_03]: The comes if they've taken over our broadcast here.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_03]: Ryan, your tabs that I'm going to peel the curtain back guys.
- 22:23[SPEAKER_03]: Ryan Aber has the most tabs open at any time in the state of Oklahoma.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_03]: If you watch his laptop, it is a hellscape.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_03]: I look at it and there's a hundred and and you think I'm exaggerating.
- 22:37[SPEAKER_03]: It's literally a hundred tabs.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_03]: It's literally a hundred tabs.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_03]: And when one of them pops off like that, you get that look of panic and watch on YouTube Ryan goes, what tap was that?
- 22:48[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I have no clue what that was which one that was because the problem is when they're so small You don't get the little icon it tells you what what's one that was, but hey the the Cubs are still up six one after six, so that's what's we're all worried about There so anyway going back to bill beading by on this offensive line.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_02]: No
- 23:16[SPEAKER_02]: You know, he feels really good about this group, but he's, you know, sort of like you, it's time they've got to prove it, they've got to prove it throughout Preseason camp and then they've got to start proven it against other teams and he feels really good.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_02]: I thought one of the interesting things.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_02]: You know, he talked about Michael Fassucian and his growth and how much better and more consistent of a player he was now versus a year ago, sort of same thing with Ryan Foget to maybe a little bit lesser degree, but and also said it talked about Ryan Foget.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_02]: It was.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_02]: not only splitting time between garden tackle last year, but also spending some time at center and especially late in the year when all of that stuff was going on that they were had to work him there and how maybe that held him back his growth a little bit.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_02]: Talked about Jake Michaela who obviously got some high praise from Jim Nagy down in Tampa, but I thought maybe one of the most interesting pieces of it was talking about
- 24:18[SPEAKER_02]: how much better he thought ethoswaita was now versus a year ago and that he was much more ready to throw be thrown out there.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, you know, ethoswaita was a guy who was probably forced into action a whole lot sooner than he should have been, but that's what happens when you're offensive line is banged up.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_02]: You got to roll guys out there and that that
- 24:44[SPEAKER_02]: certainly affected ethosite as a career arc, but now he feels really good about that and you know, everything goes the way that they want it to, ethosite, it probably didn't get to play a whole lot, but he's a valuable piece to have, so you can insert him into a couple different places and they've got a group
- 25:06[SPEAKER_02]: that is a whole lot more versatile than a lot of offensive lines that we've seen in the past couple of years.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_02]: And if they're able to stay healthy, I think they've got a chance to be, you know, maybe not certainly not the best offensive line it will be in both head because he's had a lot of
- 25:22[SPEAKER_02]: just really high level ones when you talk about five NFLers across the board, but they've got a chance to be the best one that they've had in quite a few years this year if they're able to stay healthy and show that consistency on the field.
- 25:38[SPEAKER_03]: I think at SC Media Day, Brent said they've got eight, eight to nine guys.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_03]: They feel like they can go play winning football with certainly just as far as known quantities, the five that they return, which includes those side, and then grab it and hear us.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_03]: You've got six guys that have not just starting experience, but SEC starting experience, whether they were thrown into it or not, which I think is a really good place to be.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_03]: You've got some positional versatility with
- 26:03[SPEAKER_03]: and if he goes inside outside, even though he's going to probably work at guard, but he can step over to tackle.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_03]: And just talking to Jake Mike, a guy that you just asked him about Noah Bass, the true freshman coming in, and he just lit up, talking about all the work that
- 26:18[SPEAKER_03]: He did it center throughout the spring.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_03]: A lot of that was due to Caleb needed being banged up.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_03]: Jack, like Caleb needed getting healthy over the summer and being able to put that in.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_03]: It feels like at least outside of maybe a faux J work in inside now, outside maybe a Peyton Joseph who's got some versatile over the places.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, uh, who Jake Michael has been working really well at Tackle.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_03]: It feels like you've got guys that are like pigeonholed in where one injury doesn't rotate the entire offensive line as well, which I think it's going to be huge for a group John that we know Bill Beanbow tankers and he loves to tinker, but
- 26:52[SPEAKER_03]: This might be, it might have synced up perfectly that in a year that you can't really afford to tinker with what's on the horizon.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_03]: If you pay attention to the coaches' poll, which dropped, I'll use it nine, guess who's three, and four, Georgia and Texas who run the horizon, Michigan there, and what's 16 as far as that goes it.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_03]: Not the kind of start that you want to be tinkering with, but I don't know if there'll be those going to have to tinker if everyone stays healthy.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and this is this is such an important area for everything for everything.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_01]: Everything hinges offensively on the offensive line.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_01]: John Matier is going to be a tremendous quarterback this year.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_01]: If his offensive line one stays healthy and two place well.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_01]: Simple as that.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to have a great year.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to be able to get it to football out to his wider receivers.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to be able to talk to Kevin Wilson yesterday extensively for about 20 minutes.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_01]: And he brought back the old, um,
- 27:42[SPEAKER_01]: But I have thrown out on this podcast.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, it doesn't times over the years.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_01]: And that is, guys, you can only block.
- 27:49[SPEAKER_01]: You can only call plays for that which your quarterback can operate and execute.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_01]: And two, what your offensive line can block.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_01]: He said that again yesterday.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_01]: I was like Kevin.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_01]: I remember the first time hearing that it was like a great revelation of football knowledge fell on my head.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_01]: I loved it He said it again and I was like, yep, that's that's my Kevin Wilson.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_01]: I remember him from back in the day.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, four, oh five, you know, calling those plays.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, six, oh seven.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_01]: That's I mean, that's a hundred percent true and
- 28:17[SPEAKER_01]: Assuming everybody stays healthy, the fact that everybody currently has what looks like a locked-in position.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, you need to have a season which, which in recent times would be extremely rare, where you look back, you know, in your comparing statistics against your ball opponent or in this place case your college football playoff opponent.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_01]: And you, oh, you need to be one of those teams this year.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_01]: that with the offensive line has a combined 130 consecutive starts together.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 28:46[SPEAKER_01]: All five guys start every game for the entire season.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_01]: If that happens, man, this offense is going to take off.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_03]: Well, and it just simply, one of those things where they don't need to be like, they've played eight different combinations this year, something like that, which has been the case for a couple of years, and it'll help also.
- 29:04[SPEAKER_03]: That never pays off.
- 29:05[SPEAKER_01]: That's never getting towards a bad combination.
- 29:07[SPEAKER_03]: It'll help the running back room as well, John, which I know that you were over with dealing with Mochola, and it's a group that you come into this.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_03]: That might be the biggest position battle on the field that's actually waging into fall camp outside of Punkter.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_03]: We'll get to the special teams of it all.
- 29:21[SPEAKER_03]: But you look at it, and you get Xavier Robinson and Tory Blaylock back healthy for fall camp.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_03]: That gave Jonathan Hatton and Dezephan Walker and Lloyd Avaught the Colorado State transfer plenty of time to kind of grab those snaps during the spring.
- 29:35[SPEAKER_03]: I think we'll remember watching back in the spring game.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_03]: But I thought it did catch by intentions.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_03]: We were kind of talking about everything afterward that it makes sense.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_03]: Lloyd Avaught's the veteran guy of that.
- 29:45[SPEAKER_03]: trio that was healthy during the spring, Lloyd Avant, you would expect to maybe be a little bit more consistent, that even the highs of a Jonathan Hattner, Joseph and Walker, but I think it's still caught on people's attention that like, hey, if you started today, again, that's without Xavier and Tory going through a full spring practice, for dealing, it might be Lloyd Avant, that's the first guy rolls out there, which I think is interesting for a group that helped why she probably being Xavier Robinson, but again, just got to get to game day and see what the rotation looks like
- 30:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I thought that was a little bit of a surprise that the Colorado State transfer is the guy who he says if we roll out there right now, he's probably my starter.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, okay, that's interesting.
- 30:27[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think any of us had him going into the preseason as the top guy or the most available guy or whatever it is.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_01]: But talking to Tori yesterday, Tori Blaylock,
- 30:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think his freshman year, if I'm not mistaken, correctly, if I'm wrong, he was not the most entertaining interview, right?
- 30:47[SPEAKER_01]: The most engaging interview, he had a lot of quick answers and a lot of us.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_01]: That's your freshman year.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_01]: sophomore year, he goes to media day and he's holding cord over there, guys.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_01]: He looks like a different person.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_01]: He looks like a completely grown-up running back fully integrated into the system.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_01]: Know's what he's talking about.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_01]: Know's his teammates.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_01]: Confident.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_01]: he looks really good so you know being the kind of the kind of start that he had to his career last year where you know you kind of what two games into the season I think he had a hundred yard game at tempo maybe his three games he was a guy that hey you're
- 31:23[SPEAKER_01]: You were a freshman last year.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_01]: You probably look around and you see Jonathan Hatton and you see Dezef and Walker and all the guys like that.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_01]: And maybe you have this thing in the back of your head, right?
- 31:34[SPEAKER_01]: That says, oh, those guys are just freshmen.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_01]: But I said, you did it last year as a freshman.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_01]: You took over that role as a freshman.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_01]: I said, can you talk about those two guys and describe what you like about them?
- 31:46[SPEAKER_01]: Boy, he went into what he likes about those guys.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_01]: So they're asked freshman.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's true freshman.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_01]: Both of those guys have been really impressive this off season today.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously first day of training camp
- 31:58[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and then we're gonna hit full pads at some point over the weekend.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see how they hold up But uh, there's one guy at least a sophomore Tory Blaylock who was extremely impressed by those freshmen And and talk to Dean McCollock as well.
- 32:12[SPEAKER_01]: He loves those guys.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_01]: He he he he walks in and I had my question to him was Do
- 32:18[SPEAKER_01]: go back and pile on their films, you know, the game film, the tapes, the clips, the cut-ups, do you stack those up and just stare at them and see what he's got to do?
- 32:27[SPEAKER_01]: Or do you go into this season and say, I want to see what those guys have done for me as of spring football, how they work out in the summer, how they interact with me since I've been here as the run-and-back scoach.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_01]: He said, no, it's all moving forward.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_01]: He said, I haven't gone, but he said, I look at stuff, but
- 32:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not basing any decisions or picking any, making any decisions like that on their film from last year.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_01]: I don't care about any of that.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_01]: I want to know what they can do moving forward and he was pretty adamant about that.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_01]: So I thought that was interesting that he loves this young guys and he can't wait to see what the young guys and the older guys can do for this position.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_03]: It's a group Carson that I know that we got a good dose of the shiny new toys right during Springball.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_03]: The further and we get, it's just, man, it's been so long since we got to see Zayda Robinson run the ball healthy.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_03]: And I think we are, remember, the Ole Miss game, the third quarter, I just, like, kind of credit Zayda Robinson by himself for re-energizing the sideline.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_03]: Tory Blaylock has been since what, South Carolina since he was really sprying and healthy, and even then he was banged up the first half of the year, just kind of got worse and worse and worse and worse.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_03]: I just can't wait to see what those two guys with the better offensive line, with better help in the runny game from the Titans, and just hopefully health.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_03]: What kind of difference makers they could be because I think that they can be big time different speakers for the sooner's this year.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_00]: I totally agree.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you look at every time Xavier Robinson's been fully healthy.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_00]: He's been explosive.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_00]: He's been a past catcher.
- 33:53[SPEAKER_00]: He's been someone that breaks off long runs.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, you mentioned the run against Ole Miss.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_00]: He had that game ceiling one against Tennessee.
- 34:00[SPEAKER_00]: When he's healthy, he's a really dang good back.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_00]: He's someone that can catch someone that is
- 34:09[SPEAKER_00]: to your point when he looked his best last year when he was fully healthy, that South Carolina game was phenomenal.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_00]: He was great against tempo, obviously lower opponent, but still looked really good.
- 34:19[SPEAKER_00]: You saw some of his potential in that one.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_00]: So it is kind of a good problem to have.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_00]: kind of when you consider how good the freshmen looked throughout Springball, how good a Vaughn is being received by his teammates, his coaches, and then the experience of those two in their healthy, obviously we want to see them back on the field at some point in the spring, see what they're looking like, assuming there's no setbacks.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_00]: They set up to be really good this year, which,
- 34:46[SPEAKER_00]: makes makes for an interesting next few weeks reading up to that UTEP game.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_00]: I also think that could be kind of a trial game too for the next week against Michigan, obviously much tougher opponent, seeing what works, what doesn't work.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_00]: I think that I really expect to see all five of those guys getting carries in that game against UTEP.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_00]: Assuming it goes the way we think it's going to, and I
- 35:08[SPEAKER_00]: Did a ranking of quote trap games this week?
- 35:11[SPEAKER_00]: You tap easily the easiest game on the schedule of this year.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_00]: That one should be out of hand by the first quarter, so should be a great opportunity for the running game and just getting some carries under the belts of Robinson and Boylaca again.
- 35:24[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's going to be really exciting.
- 35:27[SPEAKER_01]: Carson, I might even, if we're talking about you tip, I might even say six, because talking to Deeland McColle yesterday, he threw out a name that we had kind of just written off, but he didn't just throw it out there.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_01]: He went into details about what he loves about this kid.
- 35:44[SPEAKER_01]: Andy Bass, y'all remember him?
- 35:46[SPEAKER_01]: Didn't play quarterback and I'd go play quarterback and hair and tall.
- 35:51[SPEAKER_01]: knee injury at the end of his high school career knee injury to start his college career knee injury and year two.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_01]: He's a third year guy now and dealing with college yesterday was said he was he's pretty blown away by how good this kid is as they running back at practice.
- 36:06[SPEAKER_01]: So
- 36:08[SPEAKER_01]: Seems like a long shot from our perspective.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_01]: He's down there working with him every day.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_01]: He was impressed So don't write him off just yet.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_01]: Who among us or anybody out there listening or watching would not love to see Andy Bass have a have a nice year this year That would be so cool
- 36:25[SPEAKER_03]: It'd be, it'd be like a pretty incredible, you'd have Andy, oh, in a tiny key in Oklahoma kids, Kobe jobs in Oklahoma, it'd be a lot of those guys, but for Andy, I think just getting on the field of any, facet would be huge this year, because he's just kind of been stanked by injuries.
- 36:40[SPEAKER_03]: Well, we'll see.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_03]: I've rooting for Andy Bass, but it's really hard.
- 36:44[SPEAKER_03]: Just can't leave me to get stoked about the sixth string guy on any position group here on August 5th, but maybe I will be by September 4th.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_03]: We will see as far as that goes on the other side of the ball.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_01]: You didn't, you didn't say that about the wider severs two years ago.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_01]: The sixth string guy on the wider severs looks like that was like the best wide receiver they had on the
- 37:09[SPEAKER_01]: South Lake was it, I just went through some of those wide receiver names we talked about earlier, guys.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_01]: Andrel Anthony Jolive for Rook.
- 37:17[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the list just keeps coming.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_02]: But to be fair, that was much more about what the other guys didn't do rather than what that guy did.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_02]: You know, even though it was a great story.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_02]: And all this one I'm seeing has done right off the sixth ring guy.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_01]: Don't write off the sixth ring guy if...
- 37:35[SPEAKER_01]: there's been a history, at least in this program recently, of the first five getting injured.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_01]: So, ugh, they'll touch that when it's stinks.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's smoking.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_03]: The good news is we've seen Zader Robbs actually play in the FCC and Tory Blay, like actually play in the FCC.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_03]: As long as they're healthy, they're going to be okay.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_03]: Rollin' it as far as that goes.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_03]: Look at the other side of the ball.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_03]: We got to talk to Owen Heineke and it's the first real like
- 37:59[SPEAKER_03]: football press conference for one-hineke since you know he's come back in and we talked to him early saver did dad and Norman outside the courthouse as far as that goes got to talk to Cole Sullivan but despite the fact that we talked to Owen-hineke and Cole Sullivan who were both great.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_03]: The star of the show yesterday might have been Kipp Lewis so that might have been Kipp Lewis from exactly what you asked.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_03]: Vittables Ryan because I think by now everyone at least who's pretty locked in who's with us of the offseason certainly knows that Kip Lewis off the field, chill, nerdy Kip Lewis on the field, serial killer psychopath in the best way.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_03]: I just appreciate that you can tell a friend's feeling comfortable and he's able to be like, yeah, Kip gets after me sometimes, but if as long as he used to be on Saturdays, we're good.
- 38:45[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's, you know, it's one of those things that we've seen it with several players.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I think back to, you know, Orlando Brown and some of the Eric striker who are really eccentric in different kinds of ways off the field and had the different approaches.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_02]: But once you flip the switch and it's game day, you know, completely different guys.
- 39:06[SPEAKER_02]: And we've talked a lot over the last couple of years about game day kip and just how different he is.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_02]: But it's even from pregame into the game, which is sort of what I was asking print Vinnables about.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_02]: There's a switch that gets flipped and he said he just sees Kip Lewis running around like crazy and all that.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, just do what you're supposed to do, be in the place you're supposed to be and let's get ready.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_02]: But clearly Kip Lewis doesn't have a problem getting ready because he has been ready to go.
- 39:36[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it was really interesting listening to Owen Heinecky talk about Kip Lewis and the kind of player the way that he handled last year when they were, you know, splitting reps at times and the way that that went, but also, you know, talking to some of the other coaches about.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_02]: Kip Lewis and how much he's meant there to that group and what kind of player he is, you know, one of the biggest You know, we've talked about it several times, but one of the biggest moves that Oklahoma made in the offseason was the ability to hold on to to Kip Lewis and keep him in the fold for another year and I think they feel really good
- 40:15[SPEAKER_02]: about those, those two guys, especially at linebacker in Owen Heineke and Kip Lewis and what they sort of built around them with obviously you mentioned Cole Sullivan and the versatility that he brings able to slide into both those positions but also in the Cheetah spot talk to a lot to Cole Sullivan about that adjustment there.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_02]: and about into Owen Heinecky about the way that his offseason is gone was certainly an offseason unlike any other we've seen to this point, but there were certainly some significant benefit there for him.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, Ryan, I know you wrote about it on the website, Oakmasuders, on a stop, stop.
- 40:56[SPEAKER_03]: My video says Ryan said showed off to everyone earlier, but how does he now that he's back in and able to hit the practice field?
- 41:05[SPEAKER_03]: How does he view this off season and kind of the highs and lows and sideways turns?
- 41:11[SPEAKER_03]: Because there is nothing that anyone could have passed out any advice for it.
- 41:14[SPEAKER_03]: It was a pretty unprecedented style of off season, but one that certainly landed with him back in dorm, which is going to be huge, obviously.
- 41:22[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think, you know, certainly he missed the spring and, you know, the ability to be around his teammates consistently, things like that, not that he was never around, but, you know, was mostly down in Dallas, focusing on NFL draft work, and then obviously the court case, and everything there, but he chose to look at the positives of it and the positives of it, where he got to go through the senior bull and NFL combine experience and talk.
- 41:47[SPEAKER_02]: to a lot of coaches, a lot of scouts about what they saw in film of him and a lot of that feedback is our things that he was able to bring back to Norman and be like, hey, we got to really focus on this not only because it's going to make him a better NFL prospect a year from now, but also because it's going to make him a better football player now because Owen
- 42:16[SPEAKER_02]: at the college level.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_02]: It really wasn't until last year that he really broke through and was a consistent contributor there.
- 42:23[SPEAKER_02]: He talked about how he likes being viewed as a slippery kind of linebacker that's able to slide into some spots and make some plays that otherwise he wouldn't be able to, but sometimes in the NFL, they don't want that.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_02]: They want you to be physical at the point of attack and really, you know, stick your head in there and the ability to make everything else about the defense
- 42:45[SPEAKER_02]: uh... sort of fit around you rather than just go not not hero ball but you know along those lines and that's something that i want to find a key is really taken into the summer work and certainly take it in uh... now that uh... you know preseason campus here as a real focus because he said it's been a whole lot different for him gearing up this year uh... versus a year ago when he's just fighting to get noticed still at this point
- 43:11[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and one thing that's going to help all the live backers out regardless is those guys playing in front of them got to talk to Jane Jackson yesterday.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_03]: Chris, what you make of BB talking about not just David Stone, but some of those guys behind Jackson and Stone.
- 43:25[SPEAKER_03]: And then obviously he was asked about kind of PJ and how he's going to fit in after Taylor Wine was so high on PJ out at SECVD a day.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I thought it was just confirmation of what we have heard a lot throughout the off season about Trent Wilson's really good.
- 43:42[SPEAKER_00]: Nigel Smith's really good PJ.
- 43:43[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, really starting to put it together.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_00]: We know the athlete he is.
- 43:47[SPEAKER_00]: We know that his ceiling is higher than just about everybody's with the athlete he is.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_00]: And he feels really confident in that group, which is good to hear.
- 43:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think PJ or Daniel Koya, we talked about, could be a pretty even share of snaps at that other DN spot opposite Taylor Wine.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_00]: And if PJ ends up getting more of those reps, it sounds like Vinnables is very confident and what he can do.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_00]: So that was a big take away for me.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I'm still curious.
- 44:17[SPEAKER_00]: I still want to see Trent Wilson, Nigel Smith kind of in the fold before we make too many judgments on them.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, we heard a ton about Taylor Wein's going to be the breakout guy.
- 44:26[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to do this in that in 2025 and he sure did that.
- 44:30[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not that we don't trust that.
- 44:32[SPEAKER_00]: We just kind of want to see what is the group behind look like.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_00]: behind the David Stone, Jayden Jackson Arcute, we the best interior defense of line.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_00]: Candies number two's be really, really, really, really high level players and be a pretty similar form and defensive line group to what they had last year when obviously Grace and Houghton Dom Williams were still in the fold.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_01]: Guys, the question I have about the D-line and what we've seen
- 45:06[SPEAKER_01]: two players who are already now, as of yesterday, David Stone and Kipp Lewis, who are on preseason watch list for national defense of player the year, interior offensive line by the year.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_01]: Butkis award, you can expect to see Kipp Lewis out there for that.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_01]: Where are those guys?
- 45:23[SPEAKER_01]: Where have they been?
- 45:24[SPEAKER_01]: How come we haven't gotten talk to any of them in Tampa or Norman Oklahoma?
- 45:29[SPEAKER_01]: Both guys were missing it, maybe a day, both guys were missing it
- 45:34[SPEAKER_01]: that if those are your top defenders in your award winners wonder why wonder why I mean I'm not sitting here saying they have to roll them out to win awards it would be nice but I just wonder why we haven't gotten to talk to them yet
- 45:48[SPEAKER_03]: I don't think Kip likes doing media.
- 45:49[SPEAKER_03]: I think it's simple as that.
- 45:50[SPEAKER_03]: It would just find Kip's kind of a quiet, that's meldily Kip, right?
- 45:54[SPEAKER_01]: That's more quiet than everybody else.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_01]: Seeing your linebacker three-year starter, he's one of the team leaders, he needs to get out there and do that medium in.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, if Ethan taught Ethan back down, excuse me, you can go a complete year without doing any, during here's final year on campus, you know, I'm sure we'll get to talk to Kip Lewis at some point.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_02]: You know, won't get to that situation,
- 46:19[SPEAKER_03]: And at the end of the day, I think I kind of like psycho-kip with a little bit of mystery and mystique as far as that goes.
- 46:26[SPEAKER_03]: We did get plenty of FaceTime though with the defensive backs, Michael Wooganowski, Peyton Bowen, Eli Bowen, all their Carson.
- 46:32[SPEAKER_03]: I'm excited about Eli.
- 46:34[SPEAKER_03]: Seems like he's a guy that's kind of embracing this leadership role as he steps up into his junior season, a guy that we know is really, really, really quiet.
- 46:42[SPEAKER_03]: Just kind of goes about his business, but he's always like his play, speak for himself.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_03]: Feels like he's stepping into a big time leadership
- 46:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he was great to talk to yesterday.
- 46:52[SPEAKER_00]: He's never the longest winded speaker, but he was pretty insightful just talking about, how he's still not the old guy per se in the corner back room.
- 47:00[SPEAKER_00]: That's Jacobi Johnson, and he's still picking up quite a bit from Jacobi Johnson, who's probably gonna be the top back up corner back this year.
- 47:07[SPEAKER_00]: But he's also now, he is an upper class man.
- 47:09[SPEAKER_00]: He's a junior, he can be someone that,
- 47:12[SPEAKER_00]: more than anything, I think his plays a really good example for the younger corner back.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_00]: Just how effective he's been into seasons last year.
- 47:18[SPEAKER_00]: He missed the first four games with an injury.
- 47:21[SPEAKER_00]: Still was similarly productive.
- 47:23[SPEAKER_00]: Put up similar numbers to his freshman year.
- 47:25[SPEAKER_00]: It was just fantastic.
- 47:26[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, had that pick six against Alabama.
- 47:29[SPEAKER_00]: So I thought it was cool to hear just kind of his balance of.
- 47:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I am one of the older guys, but there's still a lot that I have to learn at this point.
- 47:36[SPEAKER_00]: So that was cool to hear.
- 47:38[SPEAKER_00]: Talked about his relationship with Jacobi Johnson, he said the two of them play golf quite often, really good friends.
- 47:43[SPEAKER_00]: He said he's one of the best, his best friends on the team and he's learned a lot.
- 47:47[SPEAKER_00]: So just kind of picking his brain about that was great.
- 47:49[SPEAKER_00]: He also talked about his relationship with Peyton Bowen, older brother, obviously, what he's learned from him.
- 47:55[SPEAKER_00]: Sounds like it could be a really, really, really stingy unit this year with both the bone rather than just coming back, Portland, Gillery that resoles so much from him last year.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_00]: He could be even better this year, maybe get some picks to his name, and then Michael Boganowski stepping into what Robert Spears Shinnings' role used to be, I think it's going to be a really good unit.
- 48:14[SPEAKER_03]: can't wait to see what Lamar Morgan does with those guys.
- 48:16[SPEAKER_03]: He talked a lot about kind of wiping the slate clean for everybody, not that that's like a negative with court-lended e-line, which a Kobe's given to you trying to bring Prince and the code of fields along.
- 48:27[SPEAKER_03]: And the thing that it sounds like he is pointed out is Javalai, loved his DB's very, very physical, not that he doesn't want that, but the one that you target is we need to be less grabby as a group.
- 48:37[SPEAKER_03]: We need to turn those pack.
- 48:42[SPEAKER_03]: and then kind of moving away from that.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_03]: So I'll be interested to see just kind of how that develops as this bad boy goes right.
- 48:49[SPEAKER_03]: And it was anything else from the Brent Venables or Ben Arbuckle or just any of the sisters that just kind of really stuck out to you as we enter the early stages of fall camp here of the course of the end of the suite.
- 48:59[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think a couple of quick things.
- 49:01[SPEAKER_02]: One got a chance to talk to Nate Dryling during this and he talked about seeing in in live time Cole Sullivan's reaction to Owen Heinecky, you know, getting the extra year and how excited Cole Sullivan was at least outwardly.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_02]: But then I got a chance to talk to Cole Sullivan and and talk to ask him about that and and talked about hey, he knows that he was the most affected by it and he didn't shy away from saying, hey, there's some maybe some trepidation there, but the way that he worked through that I thought was big, you know, part of that was worked through I think by the time that that decision came down, but just talking to tonight, dryling about the way that,
- 49:45[SPEAKER_02]: You know, all of that played out in the way that, you know, those two players have handled things both, you know, emotionally and mentally, but also physically on the field during the off season.
- 49:57[SPEAKER_02]: And then a fascinating thing from Bill Beatonville was talking about how he is coaching style.
- 50:04[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe he changed it for the first couple of years after NIL and hey, you know, the transfer portal and all that stuff and maybe softened up a little bit.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_02]: But then he said really over the last year, he's come to the realization that, hey, I've just got a B who I am.
- 50:21[SPEAKER_02]: And you know, players are gonna appreciate that or they're not, and if they don't, hey, they're not the right guy to have here and just got a role with who you are.
- 50:30[SPEAKER_02]: And we've seen sort of the real beaten bill, beaten bow that we've all come to know and love and appreciate out there here over the last couple of years and maybe he's, you know, getting on guys.
- 50:42[SPEAKER_02]: in a little bit different way.
- 50:44[SPEAKER_02]: So that was always fun.
- 50:45[SPEAKER_02]: And I got to ask Bill Beanbow about the relationship with Skip Johnson because it just strikes me that they have very similar personalities and maybe would enjoy spending time together.
- 50:57[SPEAKER_02]: And Bill Beanbow said they really hadn't.
- 51:00[SPEAKER_02]: Got a chance to chat much until the last few months, they were together at the celebration for the baseball championship and then have been in a couple different events since and you get a sense that maybe they have a chance to build a budding friendship there because they have, you know, Bill Beanbows not quite the same.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_02]: You know, the folksy wisdom and things like that that skip Johnson pulls out there, but there's a lot similar to how they go about things and they're sort of outlook on life.
- 51:36[SPEAKER_01]: And I'll just add some of the study out to me, the safety position we talked about the corners obviously being loaded the safety position loaded with talent, Peyton Bowen starting.
- 51:47[SPEAKER_01]: Michael Boganowski expected to be that other guy everybody expects him to include his position coach.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_01]: Brandon Hall talked to him yesterday as well about Bogunowski talked to Peyton Ballon about Bogunowski and they are but these are guys who are obviously entrenched in what is expected of the safety position at Oklahoma.
- 52:06[SPEAKER_01]: They think he's going to have a great season.
- 52:09[SPEAKER_01]: a lot of reasons why one of them is he's a big hitter another reason is he doesn't always look for the kill shot like he did his first couple of seasons he's he's now actually playing safety's playing defensive back he's understanding routes combinations and uh coverage is an options and things like that and what his job is and what is uh as well as run support obviously the kid loves to come up and hit but uh the both the coach and the say and here's the crazy thing
- 52:36[SPEAKER_01]: If you are lucky enough to play and play a lot as a true freshman for the outside observers like us, or maybe the fans or whoever, your career goes by like that man.
- 52:48[SPEAKER_01]: Peyton Bowen is now a senior, Michael Boganowski is now a junior.
- 52:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just like, you look up for a second and three years, four years have gone past.
- 52:56[SPEAKER_01]: And you're like, I remember when that guy signed, like, what was that like in October?
- 53:00[SPEAKER_01]: No, it was four years ago.
- 53:02[SPEAKER_01]: So it goes by fast, and especially when you're playing a lot, you know, then you think about just to throw this out there, the other side of that, somebody like Andy Bass, who has been at OU for three years, and he still has a plate, you know?
- 53:16[SPEAKER_01]: So if you don't play, it seems like it takes forever.
- 53:18[SPEAKER_01]: If you do play, it goes by like in a blink of an eye.
- 53:23[SPEAKER_00]: Something that caught me was just hearing from people from the position groups that we talked about the blocking has to be really good.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_00]: So hearing from Jake, Micula, and Hayden Hanson.
- 53:31[SPEAKER_00]: I thought Micula was really cool talking to him about Fabetsu Wewo, the impact that he had with the program, his leadership.
- 53:38[SPEAKER_00]: And what he learned from him, even when he couldn't play those final games of the year, obviously, Micula missed the college football playoff game against Alabama.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_00]: Fabetsu Wewo had to play center in his absence.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_00]: learning about his versatility, what it takes to be a good leadership.
- 53:53[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Jake Micula's only playing a second year at Oklahoma, but he's quote one of the old guys on this roster on the offensive line.
- 54:01[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, there's obviously the youngsters like Ryan Foge, a Michael Foscietti peer of the Wii, but really,
- 54:06[SPEAKER_00]: He and I'm already in Harris have played the most college football at this point, so I just like hearing from him about what he brings from a leadership standpoint How he's grown in that area, so that was neat, and then he didn't answer and I asked him about that position group, because it's so weird to have Two freshmen, two true freshmen with Tyler Rocks or writer mix.
- 54:24[SPEAKER_00]: They have hands in the he's a quote old guy, but then there's Rocky beers is 24 years old, I believe.
- 54:29[SPEAKER_00]: married a kid on the way.
- 54:31[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, so different from these two true freshmen to the old end of the scale rocky beers.
- 54:36[SPEAKER_00]: But in spite of that, he said that the tight end of the room's arguably the closest on the team hasn't been hard at all for them to connect.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_00]: So just really, really cool to hear how they've built that chemistry so far and how they plan to use that to make them a really good unit on the field this year.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_03]: really excited to see how this thing starts to truly come together right and we've been talking about it for months and months and months and we're still a day under a month away from kickoff, but as you guys saw, coaches Paul, we mentioned to Oklahoma, Davies at number nine in the coaches poll.
- 55:06[SPEAKER_03]: Weirdly enough, they're the number four SEC team in the coaches poll as opposed to the number 17 that the media had thought that was headed to SEC media day
- 55:20[SPEAKER_03]: Lorda they're receiving votes.
- 55:22[SPEAKER_03]: You've got new Mexico receiving votes.
- 55:24[SPEAKER_03]: You've got South Carolina receiving votes.
- 55:26[SPEAKER_03]: So even the opponents that aren't actually in the top 25 still receiving votes as far as that goes.
- 55:31[SPEAKER_03]: But Abraham, we do have to circle back to Bill of Eden, Bob.
- 55:36[SPEAKER_03]: Did you get his updated Netflix watch list?
- 55:39[SPEAKER_03]: Cause I think the last time we talked to Bill at a media day was two years ago.
- 55:43[SPEAKER_03]: He had just discovered Netflix.
- 55:45[SPEAKER_03]: And when asked what he was catching up on, he was just watching SVU, which is maybe the most billed beaten bow comment.
- 55:51[SPEAKER_03]: Do we have an update on the, on the beaten bow watch list?
- 55:55[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't get a chance to ask him, but I wonder if he's pumped up for the fifth season of Ted Lasso starting today.
- 56:03[SPEAKER_02]: Well, that's a figure out if he's check our fourth season, excuse me, see if he's figured out how to watch Apple TV as well.
- 56:13[SPEAKER_03]: Something strikes me.
- 56:14[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if Bill Beanbow would want to vibe on the positivity that's that.
- 56:17[SPEAKER_03]: I think that Bill Beanbow would probably not.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_01]: He's a little bit more like the rest of us is he is he going to have like nine streaming services when it's all said.
- 56:27[SPEAKER_03]: I just wanted to get off the S.B.
- 56:28[SPEAKER_03]: I was like, Bill, we could have just turned it on USA Network and been fine.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_03]: You didn't need Netflix for that.
- 56:33[SPEAKER_03]: You sent the DVR and my guy.
- 56:35[SPEAKER_03]: It's not all the time.
- 56:36[SPEAKER_02]: He's probably still watching it.
- 56:38[SPEAKER_02]: just, you know, that feels like a show that you just have on on the background, you know, while you're, you know, have film playing on your laptop or something.
- 56:47[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we all rewatch our favorite shows I've watched by Breaking Bad 7 times, I've restarted the alias recently from 2002, 2003, that's like my fourth time to that SVU never is off the air.
- 56:59[SPEAKER_01]: It's on the air somewhere, sometime every day of every minute of every day.
- 57:04[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, he's tuned in.
- 57:06[SPEAKER_03]: I just wonder, we know that he's talked about it in the past and this came from Gashley to the 22F season where he was like, no, it was going to go to you.
- 57:14[SPEAKER_03]: I'll retire here and I'll go to the lake.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_03]: That's basically like what I'm going to do.
- 57:17[SPEAKER_03]: We need to get him on Ozark.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_03]: I think that that would be a really, really nice lake as far as that happens.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I did just just rewatch Ozark for the first time since the finale and yeah, I can see
- 57:35[SPEAKER_03]: for sure as far as that goes.
- 57:37[SPEAKER_03]: Well, guys, Paul campus here, which means the cup overflow I thought you had to do is head to Oklahoma sooners on SI.com.
- 57:44[SPEAKER_03]: Oklahoma sooners on SI.com.
- 57:47[SPEAKER_03]: It is always free.
- 57:49[SPEAKER_03]: Never have to put in a credit card or anything like that.
- 57:51[SPEAKER_03]: You can get all of our content as we have a ton coming out of media day coming all throughout this bad boy.
- 57:57[SPEAKER_03]: And like we said, Friday morning, be sure you're checking back.
- 58:00[SPEAKER_03]: on the site to make sure that you get everything from our practice viewing and everything that came out of that is we will be out in about in Norman making all of that happen.
- 58:10[SPEAKER_03]: But gentlemen, thank you so much for taking some time out of your Wednesday.
- 58:14[SPEAKER_03]: Now we're all busy still transcribing
- 58:17[SPEAKER_03]: and transcribing and transcribing to get all that constant for you.
- 58:20[SPEAKER_03]: But big, big, huge Carson, two ABER, and two who will be back next Wednesday here for this year's on SIP podcast as we get one week closer to kickoff in Norman and hopefully by that time we'll have some pats on and maybe be out at the rugby fields.
- 58:36[SPEAKER_03]: But for Carson Fortride, for whom we've done my challenge.
- 58:39[SPEAKER_03]: We'll talk to you guys next week.
