- 0:00Colossians chapter 2. Let us pray.
- 0:06Our Lord God who reigns on high, you are forever to be praised
- 0:11and magnified. Father, it's all about you.
- 0:14God Almighty, we lay down. Lord, we want you more than we
- 0:18want life itself, more than we want breath itself.
- 0:21God, come in and encompass us with your glory.
- 0:24Father, teach us your eternal paths.
- 0:27God, we enter into your gates with praise and Thanksgiving.
- 0:31God, we come into the holiest of holy places.
- 0:34Lord God Almighty, we love you. Thank you for your spoken word.
- 0:38Thank you for the good news of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 0:42Thank you for our salvation. Thank you God for a an abundant
- 0:46life. Thank you Father, I pray that
- 0:48you will fuel us. God, I pray that you will fill
- 0:52us. Holy Spirit, let us burn bright
- 0:55for you today. Let us be the salt in this bland
- 0:58and tasteless world all around us.
- 1:01Let us not succumb to all the ways that the enemy tries to
- 1:04kick us down and tries to get us into despair and discouragement.
- 1:09God, I pray in the name of Jesus that you will fill us with your
- 1:12presence and that you will fuel us, God, and that you will help
- 1:16us, Lord, to be your hands and feet today.
- 1:18Let us love those well who are all around us, our neighbors,
- 1:23Lord. Help us, Lord, to know what to
- 1:26do and when to do it, God, and shower us with your presence.
- 1:30Shower us with your grace, God, shower us with the blood of
- 1:34Jesus Christ. Cover us completely.
- 1:37Lord, I pray that we will not look left or right, but we will
- 1:41lock eyes with you, Father, and we'll put our hand to the plow,
- 1:44and we'll take up our cross and we'll die daily.
- 1:47And God, I just pray that you, Lord, will come and teach us,
- 1:51Holy Spirit, give us discernment.
- 1:53Holy Spirit, teach us all of the words.
- 1:56Let them jump off the page. Let them become alive and active
- 1:59in our hearts and minds. Let us hide them in our hearts
- 2:02so that we will not sin against you.
- 2:03Heal our broken bodies. Heal our broken marriages.
- 2:06Heal this broken land. Father, make us pure.
- 2:10Make us holy. Make us right.
- 2:12God with you and I pray, Lord, that it'll be Jesus as the
- 2:16banner over our houses and over our cars and over our
- 2:20workplaces. Let it be Jesus, His name that
- 2:23reigns supreme from now to the ends of the earth forever.
- 2:26Almighty God to be praised, You are the highest, you are the
- 2:31most Supreme, you are El Elyon, the most high God, you are the
- 2:35banner, you are the provider, you're the great physician, You
- 2:39are our everything. And Lord, you see everything.
- 2:42And so God, we get out of our own way.
- 2:44We give you the center stage. We tell you, Lord, that you,
- 2:48Father, you are the only reason that we're here.
- 2:52Teach us your eternal passes in Jesus Christ.
- 2:55Holy and precious name that I pray.
- 2:57Amen. Well, let's start in verse one,
- 3:05for I would that you knew what great conflict I have for you
- 3:11and for them at Laodicea, for as many as have not seen my face in
- 3:22the flesh. Paul alludes here that he never
- 3:24actually met the Colossians. Paul alludes here that they're
- 3:31on his heart and his mind, and he wants them to understand what
- 3:35it is that they have come to learn about and who it is that
- 3:39they are attached to. This God of Abraham, Isaac, and
- 3:44Jacob, the creator of the entire universe.
- 3:47And Paul here wants them to know the Godhead Incarnate in Christ,
- 3:55friends. Christ as the fount of wisdom,
- 3:58friends. And Paul is very adamant that
- 4:02even though he does not know them personally, he has wrestled
- 4:07with God for them. He has been an affliction for
- 4:12them. He is writing this letter from
- 4:14prison, friends, and that is the affliction that is mentioned
- 4:19here. And he wants the church here in
- 4:22Colossae to understand that his affliction is for their good.
- 4:30God has set him down and told him to write these letters, 2
- 4:36that their hearts might be comforted being knit together in
- 4:41love and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding,
- 4:48to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God and of the Father
- 4:53and of Christ. So here Paul is calling for
- 4:56unity in the community. He is saying, listen, don't be
- 5:04disbanded and don't be discouraged and don't be LED
- 5:09astray. Stay of one mind and one spirit.
- 5:13And Paul wants them to understand that it is all about
- 5:17Jesus Christ. And if they'll set their mind on
- 5:20Jesus Christ, they won't be offended, they won't be LED
- 5:23astray, they won't be duped by counterfeits.
- 5:26They will be able to run the race and finish the race well.
- 5:30And that is Our Calling as well. Friends, we need not look for
- 5:34another. We need not look for the Bible
- 5:38plus another publication. We need not look at the Bible
- 5:43plus some charismatic teacher. It is the Bible and it is the
- 5:47Bible alone that has the power, friends.
- 5:51It is alive and active. It is the Bible that we
- 5:54memorize. It is the Bible that we teach,
- 5:58friends. And the Word became flesh, and
- 6:01the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
- 6:04And we need to know that Jesus Christ told us the heaven and
- 6:09earth shall pass away, but not one of these words.
- 6:13So it is the complete authority for us.
- 6:16And if we will hyper fixate upon the Bible and only the Bible,
- 6:22we'll finish this race well. Three in whom are hidden all the
- 6:29treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
- 6:31So it is in Christ that every hidden thing is revealed.
- 6:36It is in Christ that everything was made that was not made.
- 6:42Everything came from Christ. And if we will center our lives
- 6:47and build our lives on the chief cornerstone will never be put to
- 6:52shame. Four.
- 6:54And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing
- 6:58words. These ravenous wolves come in
- 7:01and they say, yeah, yeah, yeah, the Bible plus something else.
- 7:06Or they'll say, yeah, yeah, yeah, the Bible.
- 7:09But it didn't really mean this or that.
- 7:12Watch out for those people. That is heresy, and that is
- 7:16apostasy. That is false teaching and that
- 7:21is what leads to so many people falling away is because they had
- 7:28their eyes on the teacher, they had their eyes on the
- 7:31denomination, they had their eyes on a specific kind of
- 7:36church, and that led them astray.
- 7:40And they only amassed to themselves people that would
- 7:43tickle their ears. And it is the complete authority
- 7:46from Genesis to Revelation that we build our lives upon.
- 7:50Nothing added and nothing subtracted. 5 four, though I be
- 7:56absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying
- 8:02and beholding your order and the steadfastness of your faith in
- 8:06Christ. So Paul saying, I'm with you,
- 8:09even though I've never been there physically, I am with you
- 8:12in spirit. We serve the same God.
- 8:15And so we are united as one, and one day we will be united to
- 8:20together in heaven. And this is what Paul wants them
- 8:24to know is that it has come to his attention that they are very
- 8:29militant in their approach and they are able at this point to
- 8:33safeguard their hearts and minds from all the false teaching.
- 8:37And he's commending them for that so far.
- 8:40And he's going to tell them to keep up the good work.
- 8:43Do not let these ravenous wolves come in and beguile you. 6 As
- 8:51you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk
- 8:56you in Him. Don't get knocked off of your
- 8:59high position in Christ Jesus. He paid it all, friends.
- 9:03It is all centered around Him. It is not Jesus Christ plus
- 9:08someone else. It is not the Bible plus
- 9:10something else, friends. It is Christ Jesus that we build
- 9:15our entire lives around and will never be put to shame.
- 9:20Walk in the Lord Jesus Christ. Take hold of the simple gospel.
- 9:25Don't try to pollute it. Don't try to water it down.
- 9:29What do we need to add or subtract from the Word of God
- 9:32for people to be saved? And the answer is nothing.
- 9:35It is complete. It has the power to save.
- 9:39Friends, we just read it plainly and we allow the Word of God to
- 9:44go out and do what it's going to do. 7 Rooted and built up in
- 9:51Him, and established in the faith as you have been taught,
- 9:55abounding therein with Thanksgiving.
- 9:57There's that Thanksgiving piece again.
- 9:59We enter his gates with praise and Thanksgiving.
- 10:02We get rooted and grounded and built up in the Word of God.
- 10:06We memorize Scripture. Friends, we hide it in our
- 10:10hearts so that when the counterfeit comes, we can
- 10:12immediately identify it as a counterfeit and kick it to the
- 10:17wayside and take it out in the streets and burn it.
- 10:20Friends, we do not need to be duped with all kinds of new
- 10:23teaching and this little Jingle of did the Bible really say,
- 10:28does the Bible really mean that? Right there, friends, is a
- 10:34tactic of the enemy. And it worked all the way back
- 10:37in the garden and it's working now on the masses.
- 10:42And we do not need to be LED astray by false teachers who'd
- 10:46come in and try to tell us that the Bible didn't mean what the
- 10:50Bible said. We read the Bible plainly at
- 10:52face value, and we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us and
- 10:56teach us in the ways of everlasting. 8 Beware lest any
- 11:04man spoil you through philosophy, vain deceit, after
- 11:11the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not
- 11:17after Christ. These are those who look the
- 11:20part and they sound educated and they amass to themselves a
- 11:26gathering of people and they mix just enough of religion in, just
- 11:33enough of the Bible in to make you think that they are
- 11:37ministers of God and they truly represent the Lord.
- 11:40But they do not friends. They are false teachers and they
- 11:44are heretics, friends, and they're not teaching the word of
- 11:47God. They're just teaching
- 11:48philosophy. They're just teaching
- 11:51conditions. They're just teaching the
- 11:54elementary principles of life and people go for it because
- 12:00they don't want to go deep with God.
- 12:02They don't want to actually take the time to read the Bible.
- 12:05They just want those that can amass to teach them things.
- 12:09And if we're not willing to put in the hard work, friends, then
- 12:13we will be LED astray by those little sound bites and short
- 12:17videos and all of the things that are coming against us at an
- 12:21alarm farming rate that pull people astray.
- 12:24They tickle their ears. They get in the houses of
- 12:27gullible, silly women and they lead them astray, friends, in
- 12:32droves. And they take advantage of them
- 12:34and spoil them friends, by getting all of their money and
- 12:38getting all their resources and asking for more help.
- 12:42And until they completely spoil them, Friends 9/4 In him dwells
- 12:49all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.
- 12:52We need to know that in Christ we are made complete, and there
- 12:56is nothing that we add, and there is nothing that we take
- 12:59out. It is Christ and Christ alone
- 13:02that atoned for our sins. It is not Christ plus another
- 13:08religious teacher. It is not Christ plus your
- 13:11pastor. It is not Christ plus your
- 13:14preferences. It is not Christ plus your
- 13:17nomination. It is not Christ plus what
- 13:20version of the Bible you read. Friends, we need to understand
- 13:24that this division and discord is not from God Almighty.
- 13:28And we need to understand that there is strength and unity.
- 13:32And we need to understand that it is Christ and Christ alone
- 13:36that we are saved by. No man will come to the Father
- 13:43except through Christ, and he is the Godhead, and everything is
- 13:53encompassed in Christ, and he did not think it robbery to be
- 13:57equal with God. 10 And you are complete in Him, which is the
- 14:03head of all principality and power.
- 14:07Jesus Christ kicks down all the demonic strongholds, He tears
- 14:11them down, and there is nothing that can stand in his way.
- 14:15And on the cross, whenever all of hell and all the demonic was
- 14:20rejoicing at the death of Jesus Christ, He was disarming them
- 14:26and making a public spectacle of them.
- 14:29And if they had known what was about to happen to them, they
- 14:32would have never allowed it to happen.
- 14:34And they thought that they were winning.
- 14:36But they found whenever the smoke cleared that they had been
- 14:40disarmed. And none of their trickery and
- 14:42deception is to come up against a blood bought, born again
- 14:47believer Friends 11 in whom also you are circumcised with the
- 14:56circumcision made without hands in putting off the body of the
- 15:01sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ.
- 15:06Paul's telling them, don't worry that you haven't been physically
- 15:09circumcised, That by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ your
- 15:14heart has been circumcised, which is far greater and far
- 15:18better than any of the external things that these Judaizers and
- 15:23legalizers are trying to push on you.
- 15:26That it is Christ plus circumcision.
- 15:28It is Christ plus the Mosaic law.
- 15:31It is Christ plus keeping all the law.
- 15:34And Paul here wants these Colossians to understand that
- 15:39they have been internally circumcised, which is far
- 15:43greater in the sight of God than for them to be externally,
- 15:48physically circumcised. 12 buried with him in baptism,
- 15:54wherein also you are risen with him through the faith of the
- 15:58operation of God, who has raised Him from the dead.
- 16:02So when you got baptized, friends, which is your next step
- 16:05of obedience? Once you place your faith in the
- 16:08Lord Jesus Christ, your next step of immediate obedience is
- 16:13to be baptized. And when you go down in the
- 16:16water, you identify yourself in his death.
- 16:19And when you are raised out of the water, you identify yourself
- 16:22in his resurrection. Friends, And it is powerful,
- 16:26friends, and we need to understand that it is an outward
- 16:30expression of an internal change that has happened when you have
- 16:34accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and as your Savior.
- 16:4213 and you being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of
- 16:46your flesh, has He quickened together with Him, having
- 16:50forgiven you all trespasses. Do you understand this?
- 16:55Let this sink in. Soak in this truth that when you
- 17:02come to the Lord Jesus Christ and you accept Him as your
- 17:05Savior, every single one of your trespasses and sins is
- 17:10completely blotted out. And you will stand before an
- 17:16Almighty God one day, and he will not see any of your sins
- 17:21and any of your trespasses, and he will only see the blood of
- 17:24Jesus Christ. That causes rejoicing in the
- 17:31highest order. Friends, I pray in the name of
- 17:35Jesus Christ you understand this great exchange of your
- 17:40sinfulness for His Holiness. 14 blotting out the handwriting of
- 17:48ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and
- 17:54took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross.
- 17:59So that is the great exchange that happened.
- 18:01Friends, you were guilty of breaking every single
- 18:06commandment, All of the Mosaic law you were guilty of just by
- 18:12sinning one time. You were guilty of the entirety
- 18:16of God's requirements of what it looked like to be made right
- 18:20with him and Jesus use it. And Jesus took it and He
- 18:27completely nailed it to the cross and made a spectacle to
- 18:31all of the demonic satanic host to show them that He paid in
- 18:37full for every single one of the sins that you were guilty of and
- 18:43disarmed all of them and they have no power over you.
- 18:46St. You are not a victim and you
- 18:53need not keep going back to your vomit.
- 18:57You do not need to be one who continues to find their identity
- 19:02in all of the lust and all of the disgustingness of this life.
- 19:09That is not our identity, friends.
- 19:11And when you finally understand this, you will want to live a
- 19:15life for him, and you will not want to sin any longer, And when
- 19:22you do, it will grieve you, friends. 15 And having spoiled
- 19:31principalities and powers, he made a show of them, openly
- 19:35triumphing over them in it. So whenever Jesus Christ lived
- 19:41the perfect life and died on the cross for you and for me, and
- 19:44whenever he was on the cross and he took on the sin of the world,
- 19:48and the Father turned from him, Jesus went and made a public
- 19:56spectacle over all the powers of darkness, and he snatched the
- 20:02keys, and he put them to shame. 16 Let no man therefore judge
- 20:11you in meat and drink and respect of a holy day or of the
- 20:17new moon, of the Sabbath days, 17 which are a shadow of things
- 20:23to come, but the body is of Christ.
- 20:26Paul is telling us, he's telling the church here at Colossae,
- 20:30He's saying, listen to me very carefully.
- 20:34There are many people who want to try to trick you into
- 20:38thinking that it is Jesus plus what day you observe is as holy.
- 20:45It's Jesus plus all of these elementary things, It's Jesus
- 20:52plus ceremonies and traditions is Jesus plus.
- 20:59And Paul says that before Christ came and lived a perfect life
- 21:06and died on a criminal's cross and was resurrected and ascended
- 21:13to the right hand of God, all of the things prior to Christ, they
- 21:19were pointing to him. But now we have Christ to look
- 21:23back to, and we are not held by the same requirements that God
- 21:30ordained to point towards Christ one day.
- 21:34And all of the law was put in place to show us our need for a
- 21:39Savior. But now that the Savior has
- 21:41come, we need not wait on another, and we need not try to
- 21:45be made right with God by trying to uphold all of these
- 21:51traditions and all of these standards.
- 21:54Jesus Christ lived it out. And if you are attached to Jesus
- 21:57Christ, you will want to do the right thing, and He will teach
- 22:01you obedience. 18 Let no man beguile you of your reward, and
- 22:10a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding
- 22:15into those things which he has not seen vainly puffed up by his
- 22:19fleshly mind. Paul gets to the point of this
- 22:23whole letter right here and he shows the need that he had to
- 22:27sit down and to write this letter to them.
- 22:31He's telling them be careful and be aware of those that are
- 22:34creeping into the camp. And they want to try to drag you
- 22:37away with all of their silly ideas of this angelic order.
- 22:43And they're trying to invite you into a higher understanding of
- 22:47God through worshipping of angels.
- 22:50And he's saying it's all rubbish and garbage and it's all dung in
- 22:54the sight of Jesus Christ. It is Jesus at the highest
- 23:00order. It is not by abstaining from
- 23:04certain things that make us more right with God, and it is not by
- 23:08the knowledge, this knowledge of the angelic host, that makes us
- 23:15better than other Saints. It is Jesus Christ, and Jesus
- 23:20alone is the pinnacle of all of our salvation.
- 23:26And that is what His name means. Friends. 19 And not holding the
- 23:31head, from which all the body by joints and bands, having
- 23:35nourishment ministered and knit together, increases with the
- 23:40increase of God. Jesus is the head.
- 23:43If we will just look to Him, we will be nourished, we will be
- 23:46made whole, we will be complete, we will have no lack.
- 23:50It is by fixing our eyes on Christ, friends, that we see our
- 23:55purpose and we receive our dignity and our marching orders
- 23:59and we understand why we we are here on this earth.
- 24:03And it is to glorify Him in the highest.
- 24:05It is to receive Him and to receive our salvation from Him
- 24:10so that one day we can go to be with God Almighty forever and
- 24:14ever and ever highly to be praised forever. 20 Wherefore if
- 24:26you be dead with Christ from the rudiments of this world, why as
- 24:32though living in the world, are you subject to ordinances?
- 24:3721 touch not, taste not handle not. 22 which all are to perish
- 24:44with the using after the commandments and the doctrines
- 24:49of men. He's saying don't believe that
- 24:52there is a higher calling in a higher position for those who
- 24:59mutilate their own body. Don't believe that there is more
- 25:04pleasure that God will take in us if we'll abstain from certain
- 25:09things. Paul here wants the church in
- 25:12Colossae to understand that it is Christ and Christ alone that
- 25:17makes us right with God, and everything that we do beyond
- 25:20that point is a matter of choice, and it is not a matter
- 25:25of our position with God. We'll end on 23 which things
- 25:34have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship and humility and
- 25:40neglecting of the body, not in any honor to the satisfying of
- 25:46the flesh. He's saying these things that
- 25:52they're teaching. They sure sound good, but
- 25:55they're not from God. From the outset, they seem as if
- 26:00they are going to help us attain A deeper level of understanding
- 26:05of God. From the outset, it seems as if
- 26:08we can win some kind of position with God from abstaining from
- 26:15things or learning about angels. This good gnosis and asceticism,
- 26:19Friends, it's not from God. It is Christ and Christ
- 26:23crucified that we push towards and that we believe in and that
- 26:27we propagate. And that is all that we need to
- 26:29know, Friends, is Christ and Christ crucified.
- 26:33Everything hangs on him. All the universe is centered
- 26:39around Christ in Christ only, not Christ plus anything else.
- 26:45It's not Christ plus works. Our works just prove our
- 26:51position in Christ Jesus. They don't get us a higher level
- 26:57of understanding and it is not until we understand that will we
- 27:03be made complete and full and want to do the things that God
- 27:07has for us. There is great liberty whenever
- 27:12we are attached to God and we should not muzzle the ox when it
- 27:16trades the grain. We're not held by all of the
- 27:21legal requirements that these Judaizers want to place on us,
- 27:27but we do not need to abuse grace either.
- 27:30That is the other side of the coin that we can wreck on and
- 27:34that is what you need to understand.
- 27:37If we will walk in the Spirit, we will not satisfy the lust of
- 27:40the flesh. That is my admonition to you
- 27:44today. Walk in the Spirit today.
- 27:46Don't be too far ahead. Definitely don't go backwards,
- 27:50but walk in the Spirit. Walk with God like Noah and like
- 27:56Enoch. Walk with God today.
- 28:01He's going to take you to new heights.
- 28:04Hope you've been blessed by this amazing chapter here in God's
- 28:07Word. I know I sure have.
- 28:10I'm praying for you. I love you.
- 28:14See you back here tomorrow. God bless you.
