- 1:08Speaker 1: a great faithfulness toward us in every regard. Now, if

- 1:13Speaker 1: to recommend it to a friend, you can hear this
- 1:16Speaker 1: program anytime online at Talknetwork Radio dot com. Well, now
- 1:21Speaker 1: here's Richard with today's reflection.
- 1:24Speaker 2: So those who were scattered went on their way, proclaiming
- 1:27Speaker 2: the message of good news. Philip went down to a
- 1:31Speaker 2: city in Samaria and preached the Messiah to them. The
- 1:35Speaker 2: crowds paid attention with one mind to what Philip said
- 1:39Speaker 2: as they heard and saw the signs he was performing
- 1:43Speaker 2: for unclean spirits. Crying out with a loud voice came
- 1:47Speaker 2: out of many who were possessed, and many who were
- 1:50Speaker 2: paralyzed and lame were healed. So there was great joy
- 1:55Speaker 2: in that city you know, we talked yesterday in regard
- 2:00Speaker 2: words to signs and wonders that were constantly following those
- 2:06Speaker 2: that believe. We know that we have discussed the fivefold.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Ministry, and we don't want to continue this particular part
- 2:17Speaker 3: of our study without understanding better how the Holy Spirit
- 2:23Speaker 3: is using believers, not only in the early Church and
- 2:28Speaker 3: throughout Christian history, but today. You see, there are many
- 2:34Speaker 3: today who will look at the events of history and
- 2:39Speaker 3: will simply state that that was history, and it no
- 2:43Speaker 3: longer is effective today. And yet we find in many
- 2:49Speaker 3: parts of the world where there are still those people
- 2:54Speaker 3: who are not as educated. Perhaps they are not able
- 2:58Speaker 3: to receive some of the modern medical attention that is
- 3:03Speaker 3: available to perhaps those of us in the Western world.
- 3:09Speaker 3: And yet we find demonstrations of power of the Holy
- 3:14Speaker 3: Spirit reported daily as Christ performs through each of his
- 3:22Speaker 3: believers new and better works. You see, it is always
- 3:30Speaker 3: something to be able to hear the Gospel. It is
- 3:35Speaker 3: more than just the words that are spoken. Paul even
- 3:41Speaker 3: said in another one of his letters that he did
- 3:44Speaker 3: not come to them with just the oratory of spoken work,
- 3:51Speaker 3: but in demonstration and manifestation of the power of the
- 3:55Speaker 3: Holy Spirit, and so what we find in Samaria is
- 4:01Speaker 3: a process where believers came to receive the Gospel message.
- 4:08Speaker 3: They witnessed what was taking place. People were being healed,
- 4:13Speaker 3: those that were possessed di demons were being delivered. The
- 4:19Speaker 3: works that were being done through Philip, and those that
- 4:23Speaker 3: were commissioned were actually the same works that Jesus had
- 4:28Speaker 3: given authority to do, and so many came to know Jesus.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Now.
- 4:35Speaker 3: One of the things that was following that particular event
- 4:40Speaker 3: was that there was a man named Simon, and he
- 4:44Speaker 3: had previously practiced all forms of sorcery in that city,
- 4:50Speaker 3: and he astounded the Samaritan people while claiming to be
- 4:54Speaker 3: somebody great. They all paid attention to him, from the
- 4:58Speaker 3: least of them to the greatest, and they said, this
- 5:02Speaker 3: man is called the great Power of God. They were
- 5:06Speaker 3: attended to him because he had astounded them with his
- 5:09Speaker 3: sorceries for a long time. But when they believed Philip
- 5:15Speaker 3: as he proclaimed the good news about the Kingdom of
- 5:18Speaker 3: God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and
- 5:22Speaker 3: women were baptized. Then even Simon himself believed, and after
- 5:29Speaker 3: he was baptized, he went around constantly with Philip and
- 5:34Speaker 3: was astounded as he observed the signs and great miracles
- 5:39Speaker 3: that were being performed. When the apostles who were at
- 5:44Speaker 3: Jerusalem heard that Samaria had welcomed God's message, they sent
- 5:50Speaker 3: Peter and John to them. After they went down there,
- 5:55Speaker 3: they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Listen to this portion of Acts chapter eight, in verse sixteen,
- 6:07Speaker 3: For he the Holy Spirit had not yet come down
- 6:13Speaker 3: on any of them. They had only been baptized in
- 6:18Speaker 3: the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John
- 6:21Speaker 3: laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Now this was so evident that the following verses described
- 6:32Speaker 3: what was being demonstrated. When Simon the Sorcerer saw that
- 6:38Speaker 3: the Holy Spirit was given through the laying on of
- 6:42Speaker 3: the apostles hands, he offered them money, saying, give me
- 6:48Speaker 3: this power too, so that anyone I lay hands on
- 6:53Speaker 3: may receive the Holy Spirit. But Peter told him, may
- 6:57Speaker 3: your silver be destroyed with you, because you thought the
- 7:02Speaker 3: gift of God could be obtained with money. You have
- 7:07Speaker 3: no part or share in this matter, because your heart
- 7:12Speaker 3: is not right before God. You see, folks, this is
- 7:17Speaker 3: a very important part of what we have been discussing.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Here we see an example of the manifest power of
- 7:27Speaker 3: God being used in believers. We see that there are
- 7:33Speaker 3: many who are being healed, and we see that there
- 7:36Speaker 3: are many who are being delivered that are possessed of demons.
- 7:41Speaker 3: We see that these same manifestations are taking place not
- 7:46Speaker 3: only in Jerusalem, but in Samaria and in all other
- 7:51Speaker 3: parts of the world as the believers are scattered. And
- 7:57Speaker 3: what we have found in this particular out is that
- 8:01Speaker 3: the man who was a sorcerer, if you will, he
- 8:05Speaker 3: was a worker of all types of occult practices. In fact,
- 8:12Speaker 3: you may even be able to say that his power
- 8:15Speaker 3: was attributed to the devil. And yet he astounded many
- 8:19Speaker 3: of those in Samaria with the manifestation of what he
- 8:26Speaker 3: did with his sorceries. But when this man saw the
- 8:31Speaker 3: works that were being proplaned and manifested through Philip, he
- 8:37Speaker 3: wanted that power. He wanted it for his own reasons.
- 8:43Speaker 3: He didn't want it to glorify God. He wanted it
- 8:47Speaker 3: so that he could continue to manipulate the masses that
- 8:52Speaker 3: were devoted to him. And yet we see something that
- 8:57Speaker 3: took place that was very evident. Remember in the account
- 9:03Speaker 3: they were baptized after they received the Gospel, they had
- 9:09Speaker 3: witnessed the manifestations, they saw the signs and wonders, and
- 9:14Speaker 3: they sought to receive Jesus. After having done that, they
- 9:20Speaker 3: were baptized. Men and women were baptized, and because of
- 9:26Speaker 3: that they were actually welcomed into the body of Christ.
- 9:32Speaker 3: They were Samaritans, they were not Jews. So as the
- 9:38Speaker 3: people began to realize they had come into a unity
- 9:43Speaker 3: because of the belief that was in them that Jesus
- 9:49Speaker 3: was alive, and it was through his name and through
- 9:52Speaker 3: the power of the promise of the Father that Philip
- 9:57Speaker 3: and the other appointed officer were able to perform signs
- 10:04Speaker 3: and wonders in front of them. So what took place
- 10:08Speaker 3: was as soon as that information came back into Jerusalem,
- 10:13Speaker 3: they were actually able to dispatch, if you will, Peter
- 10:18Speaker 3: and John who went to some area and actually laid
- 10:23Speaker 3: hands on all the believers so that they could receive
- 10:28Speaker 3: what the baptism in the Holy Spirit. They were able
- 10:34Speaker 3: to go because they knew these people needed the same
- 10:40Speaker 3: power that they had, and they did have the ability
- 10:45Speaker 3: because of the authority given them to convey that same
- 10:52Speaker 3: power through the laying on of their hands. They laid
- 10:57Speaker 3: hands on those new believers so that they could receive
- 11:02Speaker 3: the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Folks, we need to
- 11:07Speaker 3: understand that this is not some type of toy that
- 11:13Speaker 3: can be played with. Simon the Sorcerer thought that it
- 11:17Speaker 3: was that it was something he could use and for
- 11:21Speaker 3: his own benefit. And yet the apostle Peter and John
- 11:26Speaker 3: said to him that not what's going to happen. You
- 11:31Speaker 3: are not going to be able to be used of
- 11:34Speaker 3: God for your own benefit. And so we realize that
- 11:40Speaker 3: the baptism in the Holy Spirit is for believers to
- 11:46Speaker 3: be empowered to do the work of ministry. The work
- 11:51Speaker 3: of ministry is to bring the Gospel in word and
- 11:56Speaker 3: manifestation of power to a lost and dying world.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Richard will be right back in a moment to wrap up,
- 12:05Speaker 1: but if you've just joined us you've been listening to

- 12:42Speaker 1: and printed by Discovery House Publishers. Again here is Richard
- 12:46Speaker 1: to wrap up today's message.
- 12:50Speaker 3: We need to understand that need has never ceased. We
- 12:57Speaker 3: are constantly being phase with an enemy that wants to
- 13:03Speaker 3: keep all of those who have not received the Gospel captive,
- 13:08Speaker 3: and it is the power of God manifested in believers
- 13:13Speaker 3: through action that is actually able to set them free.
- 13:20Speaker 3: We want to be able to know that this same
- 13:25Speaker 3: baptism in the Holy Spirit should be as much a
- 13:31Speaker 3: normal part of the process of Christian growth as any
- 13:36Speaker 3: other part in the doctrine of the Church. We need
- 13:41Speaker 3: to understand that if early believers needed the power of
- 13:47Speaker 3: the Holy Spirit to do the work of ministry, you
- 13:52Speaker 3: and I need it just as much. We need to
- 13:57Speaker 3: understand that in order for so and wonders to follow,
- 14:03Speaker 3: those that believe the power of the Holy Spirit must
- 14:08Speaker 3: work in us. And that is today's reflection on the
- 14:14Speaker 3: Word thank you.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Richard, join us again tomorrow when we continue with the
- 14:20Speaker 1: next edition of Reflections on the Word with Richard k
