- 4:01Speaker 1: let's let's dive in this morning. My friend Alice Goltz. Here,
- 4:05Speaker 1: you and I met I think a couple of years
- 4:08Speaker 1: ago now, yes, and we we actually had our first chat,
- 4:12Speaker 1: our first conversation right here in Montpillier, just down the
- 4:16Speaker 1: road at Capitol Grounds.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Right. Yeah, we sat out in the.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Out on the sidewalk and we shared your story, which frankly,
- 4:27Speaker 1: I have heard so much about. Even before I met you,
- 4:30Speaker 1: I had people coming to me saying, you got to
- 4:33Speaker 1: talk to Alice Golds, you got to interview her, You've
- 4:35Speaker 1: got to hear this story. We're going to give an
- 4:39Speaker 1: update on your story this morning. But first, basically, let's
- 4:46Speaker 1: let's for folks that may not be familiar Alice with
- 4:50Speaker 1: with you, who you are, where you're from, and your story.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Give us a breakdown. You've you've you moved here from
- 4:57Speaker 1: New York, right.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Yes, I've no.
- 5:02Speaker 4: I I came to Burlington from New York, Okay, and
- 5:09Speaker 4: then I came then I had my daughter, and then
- 5:15Speaker 4: I left. I left Vermont because my daughter was taken
- 5:20Speaker 4: from me.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yeah, this is a and then you came back to Vermont.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Obviously, this is a very.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Uh, a very complicated and detailed story. We'll say with
- 5:35Speaker 1: great respect, there's a lot to unpack here, and frankly, uh,
- 5:41Speaker 1: the first time I met you, I'm like, man, we're
- 5:44Speaker 1: just not going to be able to scratch the surface
- 5:47Speaker 1: here in one podcast episode. That's why you've been on
- 5:50Speaker 1: several times. Yes, but you've you moved to Muntpillier, You've
- 5:56Speaker 1: been here for you live here in Montpillier.
- 5:59Speaker 2: You've been here for a long time.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Yes, all right. I've been here since two ten.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Twenty ten. All right.
- 6:07Speaker 1: So the bottom line is what now you You you
- 6:12Speaker 1: met a guy a long time ago, Yes, and the
- 6:17Speaker 1: two of you had a child together, Yes, And what
- 6:25Speaker 1: happened after that?
- 6:29Speaker 4: My daughter was taken into DCF custody.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Why.
- 6:35Speaker 4: They actually didn't say why, but it was because my disability.
- 6:41Speaker 2: And what is what is your disability?
- 6:45Speaker 4: Well, I have dystonia and I have like a cognitive disability.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, it's very very mild cognitive disability. And I
- 6:56Speaker 1: just want to say, I just want to say that
- 7:02Speaker 1: the word disability is such a buzzword these days, and
- 7:09Speaker 1: so many of us are finally starting to shift in
- 7:13Speaker 1: our world that we live in, in the way that
- 7:17Speaker 1: we think about that the folks that I know who
- 7:22Speaker 1: have quote disabilities, I look at as having more ability
- 7:30Speaker 1: than so many of the rest of us. Yes, but
- 7:35Speaker 1: you you have a massive heart and you're you're such
- 7:39Speaker 1: a special lady.
- 7:41Speaker 2: You.
- 7:42Speaker 1: You gave birth to this beautiful little girl in the
- 7:45Speaker 1: month of April.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Yes, you named her April?
- 7:48Speaker 3: Yes?
- 7:50Speaker 1: And where was she born? Right here in Vermont, yes, okay? Whereabouts?
- 7:56Speaker 3: And Fanny Allen.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Fanny all Okay in Burlington, yes, okay. Shortly after she
- 8:07Speaker 1: was born, you were in the hospital in recovering.
- 8:12Speaker 2: And what happened?
- 8:15Speaker 4: And the day after I gave her, two men came
- 8:21Speaker 4: into my house little room, stating that they would take.
- 8:24Speaker 3: It my child's insc custody.
- 8:31Speaker 4: And didn't give me any reades or anything the day
- 8:36Speaker 4: the day after, did.
- 8:40Speaker 1: You have any anyone representing you? Did you have a
- 8:44Speaker 1: social worker or anyone that was at your side when
- 8:48Speaker 1: DCF came in and took your child from you?
- 8:52Speaker 3: No, they didn't take my child and just separated us.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Okay, but I did.
- 8:59Speaker 3: I did contact my brother about.
- 9:03Speaker 4: About what should I do. My brother's a lawyer in
- 9:06Speaker 4: New York City.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Okay.
- 9:09Speaker 1: So they separated you and April, Yes, into what different
- 9:14Speaker 1: rooms or.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Yes, into different rooms?
- 9:17Speaker 4: And I couldn't be alone with my my daughter until
- 9:21Speaker 4: until somebody came in the room.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Okay. Then what happened?
- 9:27Speaker 3: Then there was an emergency court hearing.
- 9:30Speaker 4: Okay, on that Monday, right after he gave birth, and
- 9:36Speaker 4: I was in the hospital, and and my husband was
- 9:39Speaker 4: at that court hearing.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Okay, what what was said during that that hearing you
- 9:48Speaker 1: were you're still in the hospital.
- 9:50Speaker 2: What what was said?
- 9:51Speaker 4: What was said was my one of the investigators was
- 9:56Speaker 4: said that he never met a parent that did so
- 10:00Speaker 4: much for the child, but he couldn't understand it did
- 10:03Speaker 4: so much for the child even before she was born.
- 10:06Speaker 4: Where I took all these classes and I was I
- 10:11Speaker 4: was basically like prepared as any parent could be, because
- 10:15Speaker 4: we don't come with manuals. But his the father's grand
- 10:22Speaker 4: the father's not Graham, the father's mother was ordered to
- 10:26Speaker 4: come up to stay to stay with with us.
- 10:30Speaker 3: As she was deemed as responsible for the child.
- 10:36Speaker 1: What kind of classes did you take before your daughter
- 10:40Speaker 1: was born.
- 10:41Speaker 4: I took Lama's classes. I took parenting classes.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Okay, any others that you could think of.
- 10:52Speaker 3: I took a class that where nurse came.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Into my home, Okay. And then I was a that
- 11:00Speaker 4: evaluated by susan Ewan.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Tell me about Susan.
- 11:05Speaker 4: Susan Ewan is is an evaluator as college is with
- 11:10Speaker 4: parents with disabilities. Okay, and she evaluated me.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Uh and what what was her findings.
- 11:20Speaker 4: That I that I can parent with with supports?
- 11:24Speaker 2: Okay?
- 11:26Speaker 1: We uh, we're live here this morning in Montellier. Alice
- 11:31Speaker 1: Goltz is my guest returning to aired out and listen.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Let's just say it like it is when we're out
- 11:40Speaker 1: and about.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Uh.
- 11:42Speaker 1: We can't always predict when there's going to be a
- 11:44Speaker 1: weed whacker that's going to be right next to us.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Uh, but there is this morning.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Uh.
- 11:50Speaker 2: So we're just.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Gonna we got to let this guy do what he's
- 11:54Speaker 1: got to do making the grounds here look beautiful. But
- 11:59Speaker 1: hopefully you can all still hear us. Are you still
- 12:03Speaker 1: in touch with Susan?
- 12:06Speaker 4: Yes?
- 12:06Speaker 2: All once in a while, yes, okay. And where is
- 12:09Speaker 2: she now?
- 12:10Speaker 3: She's enough, she lives.
- 12:12Speaker 2: In Underhill, so she's still hearing from mom.
- 12:16Speaker 4: But she's she doesn't do she doesn't do the evaluations anymore.
- 12:21Speaker 3: She's eighty years old.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Okay. Okay, So the bottom line is.
- 12:30Speaker 1: The real bottom line here is that DCF took your
- 12:33Speaker 1: daughter from you, yes, and put her into foster.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Yes, the foster program.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Well, she didn't go into postercare right away. Of the
- 12:45Speaker 4: until like after the month after the grandmother the grandmother
- 12:50Speaker 4: had left, which the grandma was supposed.
- 12:52Speaker 3: To be there for a month, but she's only there
- 12:55Speaker 3: for a.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Week okay, the grandmother being the mother of the father. Okay,
- 13:02Speaker 1: she was only there for how long?
- 13:03Speaker 4: A week?
- 13:04Speaker 2: A week? Okay.
- 13:07Speaker 1: So then you're still trying to advocate for yourself here
- 13:12Speaker 1: at this point. And then your daughter, April gets put
- 13:15Speaker 1: into the foster program.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Yes, and my attorney had got us both put into
- 13:19Speaker 4: foster care together.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Oh.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Yes, so you were able to be with April living
- 13:26Speaker 1: with a family.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Yes?
- 13:29Speaker 2: Was that here in Vermont?
- 13:30Speaker 3: Yes, we lived with a couple of families.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Okay, how did that go?
- 13:35Speaker 3: It? It was kind of hard at that time.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Okay.
- 13:39Speaker 1: I mean you've got an.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Infant here or a toddler.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Yes, I'm guessing that April is now my guess would
- 13:49Speaker 1: be what around a year old?
- 13:51Speaker 3: Maybe she was less than a year.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Less than a year. Okay. That's a stressful transition there.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's when babies are starting to walk and
- 14:04Speaker 1: get into things, and you got to be on your
- 14:07Speaker 1: toes uh and you were, yes, So then what happens
- 14:14Speaker 1: after that?
- 14:18Speaker 3: Then? What happens.
- 14:19Speaker 4: After that, we go into the last home we went into.
- 14:25Speaker 4: My so called friend came up from Maryland saying she
- 14:29Speaker 4: had she was Sycamorea too, and she said that she
- 14:33Speaker 4: was gonna take she would take me and my daughter
- 14:36Speaker 4: and to live with her and her two children.
- 14:40Speaker 3: And so we went.
- 14:42Speaker 4: We went there to Maryland, to Marylyn at first, and
- 14:48Speaker 4: then she moved, she moved to Virginia. We had to
- 14:52Speaker 4: go there with her. And it was so hard for
- 14:56Speaker 4: my daughter. She would cry a lot with the moving
- 14:59Speaker 4: back and forth.
- 15:00Speaker 1: What because she went to Maryland first and then Virginia.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Yes, and then we'd had to go.
- 15:06Speaker 4: We had to go to New Jersey because her her
- 15:11Speaker 4: her children's father, her children, they he lived in New Jersey,
- 15:18Speaker 4: so they shared, they shared custody.
- 15:21Speaker 3: So that was hard for my daughter.
- 15:26Speaker 4: And then and then after that she didn't want us
- 15:30Speaker 4: anymore and she gave us thirty day notice that we
- 15:33Speaker 4: had to leave the home.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Okay, Then what happened?
- 15:42Speaker 4: So then DCF gave temporary custody to Virginia.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Okay.
- 15:48Speaker 4: Then there was event two quart hearings and I wasn't
- 15:55Speaker 4: on the court hearing in in Virginia. Not in Virginia
- 15:58Speaker 4: and Vermont, and I was on the court hear in Virginia.
- 16:04Speaker 4: And then when Virginia had told me that my daughter
- 16:07Speaker 4: was getting taken back into custody in Vermont, my daughter
- 16:13Speaker 4: came back here May second, two thousand and eight. I
- 16:18Speaker 4: came back to the state May third, two thousand and eight,
- 16:22Speaker 4: and May fifth, I walked into the courtroom and my
- 16:28Speaker 4: attorney had asked her visit set up for the mother
- 16:30Speaker 4: and they said no, we didn't know the mother was coming.
- 16:35Speaker 4: And judge order five day visits and she was already
- 16:38Speaker 4: placed in the permanent home as.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Soon as I got there. So it was like a
- 16:44Speaker 3: total setup.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Wow.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Meanwhile, life is time is going by, life is.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Is in motion here and you.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Become a crossing guard here in Montpellier. Yes, and how
- 17:12Speaker 1: long were you doing that?
- 17:14Speaker 4: I did that here in Mount Pillier for about ten years.
- 17:21Speaker 1: So you're seeing every every day young children, You're guiding
- 17:26Speaker 1: them across the street safely. How was How was that
- 17:31Speaker 1: for you? I can only imagine what that must have
- 17:35Speaker 1: been like.
- 17:37Speaker 3: It was, It was a little hard. There was one.
- 17:40Speaker 4: There was like a couple of years one a couple
- 17:45Speaker 4: of years. When I first started, there was like this
- 17:49Speaker 4: little girl. She was about the same age as my daughter,
- 17:53Speaker 4: so so I sort of giving her gifts and stuff,
- 17:57Speaker 4: and I started to have a relationship with her, and I.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Knew her mom, so her mom was okay about that?
- 18:09Speaker 1: Were you imagining at this point what April looked like?
- 18:16Speaker 2: Did you know where she was living?
- 18:18Speaker 3: Yes? I did. She lives in Burlington.
- 18:21Speaker 1: In Burlington, okay. Were you able to have any visitation, No.
- 18:29Speaker 3: It was only it was only letters and pictures.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Okay. Were you.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Were you able to find out if those letters and
- 18:40Speaker 1: those pictures were being actually seen by April.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Well, I don't really know all the things that she
- 18:50Speaker 4: had got, I'd send them to the adoption registry. Okay,
- 18:55Speaker 4: So I don't actually know what actually she got.
- 19:00Speaker 1: So we're going through all of these years, all of
- 19:04Speaker 1: this time, and when fast forwarding maybe what eight, nine,
- 19:12Speaker 1: ten years? You're in Montpellier one day, Yes, and what happened.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Me and my friend, my French niece, we were walking
- 19:24Speaker 4: and some and woman called my name, so we turned
- 19:31Speaker 4: around and she said, she said, April, this is mommy Alice, Mom, Alice,
- 19:43Speaker 4: this is April, and we hugged and kissed.
- 19:46Speaker 3: It was a happy said it was happy sad.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Moment because even though they didn't want to give me
- 19:52Speaker 4: a visit, God did.
- 19:58Speaker 1: So whoever this this woman was that recognized you on
- 20:03Speaker 1: the streets here in Montpellier.
- 20:04Speaker 3: It was one of her guardians.
- 20:06Speaker 2: It was one of her guardians.
- 20:07Speaker 3: I called her.
- 20:07Speaker 4: Guardians because I don't consider them as our parents.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Yeah, right, right, So you saw April at about age.
- 20:18Speaker 4: What she was about swings maybe seven, okay, seven or eight?
- 20:26Speaker 1: Seven or eight years old, and you saw her for
- 20:30Speaker 1: a matter of how many I mean minutes?
- 20:36Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe like maybe it was like ten twenty minutes maybe, okay,
- 20:43Speaker 4: And then me and my friend we wrote a letter
- 20:46Speaker 4: to the Council on Disability from Washington, d C.
- 20:52Speaker 3: And then they got in touch with Al.
- 20:54Speaker 4: Jazeera America and did a three port story on me.
- 20:59Speaker 4: Doc susan new one and DCF here of Vermont.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and I've seen that. It's it's unbelievable. Were you Were.
- 21:12Speaker 1: You able to retain any contact with April after that
- 21:19Speaker 1: brief visit for minutes on the streets of Montpellier.
- 21:25Speaker 4: No, I hadn't been able to really have a real
- 21:28Speaker 4: relationship with.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Her, other other than mailing things and hoping that yes,
- 21:35Speaker 1: she's able to see that. One of them was a
- 21:37Speaker 1: story book that you had put together, which I've seen,
- 21:41Speaker 1: which is amazing.
- 21:42Speaker 4: Me and my friend Bobby, we we worked on this
- 21:46Speaker 4: memory book so she would have her story of me
- 21:51Speaker 4: and her and I sent it out in November because
- 21:57Speaker 4: I was hoping to give it to Hope and she
- 22:00Speaker 4: to have it.
- 22:01Speaker 3: To give her enough time to see it. But she
- 22:05Speaker 3: didn't get it.
- 22:08Speaker 2: What was in that story book.
- 22:12Speaker 4: It's told from the beginning to the ends, like exactly what.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Happened, including some photographs that you were able to to
- 22:25Speaker 1: gather and save.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Yes, okay, but you never.
- 22:32Speaker 1: You never actually knew whether or not April had seen
- 22:36Speaker 1: that story book or was read any of the letters
- 22:45Speaker 1: that you had written.
- 22:47Speaker 4: They said that, they said that they sent it, they
- 22:50Speaker 4: gave it za, but I don't really actually no, no, yes, okay.
- 22:58Speaker 1: So all of this time is gone by Alice, and
- 23:04Speaker 1: you're I can't imagine what you're going through, not being
- 23:11Speaker 1: able to see your daughter grow up, have really any
- 23:17Speaker 1: reciprocating contact with her, any kind of engagement. That's got
- 23:26Speaker 1: to be extremely difficult. Yeah, can't imagine.
- 23:36Speaker 3: It's been really.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Hard for a long time.
- 23:39Speaker 3: For a long time.
- 23:43Speaker 2: During this time.
- 23:44Speaker 1: You've been kind of waiting for the day when April
- 23:49Speaker 1: would turn eighteen years old.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Yes, because I always wanted I always wanted to tell her,
- 23:55Speaker 4: tell her our story.
- 23:57Speaker 3: I want her to actually know that.
- 23:59Speaker 1: You yeah, from your mouth.
- 24:03Speaker 3: Yes.
- 24:05Speaker 1: And not only that, but in addition to that, maybe
- 24:12Speaker 1: also having some possibly hopefully some kind of relationship, yes,
- 24:25Speaker 1: regardless of what it is or what it would be,
- 24:31Speaker 1: some kind of independent communication that you could have with her, Yes,
- 24:39Speaker 1: with hope that there would be some back and forth
- 24:46Speaker 1: between the two of you, there would be something something, Yes.
- 24:52Speaker 2: And I think.
- 24:55Speaker 1: You know this is it's a real fragile situation. It's
- 25:01Speaker 1: very very delicate for both of you because you got
- 25:08Speaker 1: to take baby steps here. Yes, And you know you're
- 25:13Speaker 1: trying to purge here. You're trying to make up on
- 25:15Speaker 1: lost time, which is our greatest gift and our worst
- 25:22Speaker 1: enemy at the same time.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Yeah, but you've got to.
- 25:29Speaker 1: For both of you, you've got to play your cards right,
- 25:36Speaker 1: and you've got to take, like I said, baby steps
- 25:39Speaker 1: and don't jump the gun.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Just be.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Allow that relationship whatever it turns into, to foster at
- 25:51Speaker 1: its own pace and not rush things. So I've had
- 25:58Speaker 1: you on the air a couple of times, the first
- 26:00Speaker 1: time here in Montpellier.
- 26:02Speaker 2: The second time you were in the studio.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Which was I want to say, wasn't that like March
- 26:09Speaker 1: March or April April?
- 26:10Speaker 2: It was April.
- 26:11Speaker 3: April twenty four, twenty what April twenty.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Fourth, Okay? And when is April's birthday?
- 26:17Speaker 3: April's birthday was on the on the thirteenth. And then
- 26:23Speaker 3: I got this.
- 26:24Speaker 4: This text from JD and and I wanted to find
- 26:29Speaker 4: my I wanted to find my daughter. And I felt
- 26:32Speaker 4: like this was a sign from God telling me go
- 26:36Speaker 4: on the show and and try to see see it,
- 26:41Speaker 4: talk to talk to people.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Let them know my story, to make it aware.
- 26:49Speaker 1: And you did that. You did that very well. You
- 26:53Speaker 1: came on the air with me just days after April
- 26:56Speaker 1: thirty eighth, April's eighteenth birthday. Yes, and you told you
- 27:02Speaker 1: told your story, maybe in more detailed than than where
- 27:07Speaker 1: we're going today.
- 27:08Speaker 3: Yes.
- 27:11Speaker 1: And what happened after that that was just the end
- 27:17Speaker 1: of April, a couple of months ago.
- 27:18Speaker 2: What happened after that?
- 27:20Speaker 4: And then two like about two weeks after I had
- 27:25Speaker 4: got a phone call. I missed the phone call, but
- 27:29Speaker 4: it was on my voicemail that April had called me
- 27:34Speaker 4: because I sent me and my friend, not my friend,
- 27:37Speaker 4: me and.
- 27:37Speaker 3: My community worker. I was really disappointed.
- 27:41Speaker 4: I was going to resend the memory book and they
- 27:46Speaker 4: told they told me they could resend it, but it
- 27:51Speaker 4: would still go to the home. She wouldn't directly get it,
- 27:55Speaker 4: as the lady had misled me that they could send
- 27:59Speaker 4: it directly to her when she was eighteen. So then
- 28:03Speaker 4: me and my community worker we just sent the card,
- 28:07Speaker 4: sent the gift card, and I wrote her a letter
- 28:10Speaker 4: saying I'd be really sad you didn't get the memory
- 28:13Speaker 4: book and telling her I've been writing to her for
- 28:17Speaker 4: fifteen years. And then she wrote when she called, she
- 28:21Speaker 4: said she loved she got the memory book and she
- 28:24Speaker 4: loved it.
- 28:25Speaker 3: It meant so much to her.
- 28:29Speaker 2: That's amazing.
- 28:31Speaker 3: That was the first thing, and then the second.
- 28:33Speaker 2: So that was.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Right around the beginning of May, right, Yes, Yes, wasn't
- 28:41Speaker 1: that the day before Mother's Day?
- 28:44Speaker 2: Yes, And you called me right away.
- 28:49Speaker 1: And I've literally had goosebumps all over my arms. I
- 28:55Speaker 1: mean we were doing everything on the air that day,
- 28:57Speaker 1: including giving out your yourself phone number in hopes that
- 29:02Speaker 1: someone listening would would be able to maybe get the
- 29:08Speaker 1: link to that episode to April so that she would
- 29:12Speaker 1: contact you. And there was somebody that reached out to
- 29:15Speaker 1: you and said, hey, I saw the podcast, didn't they say?
- 29:20Speaker 2: I know? And I know?
- 29:21Speaker 1: Didn't they say? And I know April? Yes, So you
- 29:27Speaker 1: get that, you get this this this phone call from
- 29:31Speaker 1: April with a voicemail, yes, saying she received this, this
- 29:38Speaker 1: this memory book that you've put together.
- 29:40Speaker 3: Yes?
- 29:43Speaker 2: Then what so this is the day before Mother's Day?
- 29:46Speaker 4: Then what Then the day after I got a text
- 29:50Speaker 4: saying it from her having Mother's Day mommy Alice.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Wow? Then what happened?
- 30:03Speaker 4: Then we did try to try to get together, but
- 30:09Speaker 4: that didn't work out because she had.
- 30:11Speaker 2: To work late. Okay, And then.
- 30:19Speaker 1: You got a birthday, your birthday, May twentieth.
- 30:24Speaker 2: Yes, there was more communication.
- 30:28Speaker 1: She reached out to you and said happy birthday. She's
- 30:31Speaker 1: got your cell phone number now.
- 30:33Speaker 4: Yes, me and my community worker, we hadn't heard from her,
- 30:40Speaker 4: so we wrote her another letter, another text telling her
- 30:43Speaker 4: what I was doing for my birthday, that it was
- 30:46Speaker 4: my birthday.
- 30:46Speaker 3: And what I did. And then she put a.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Text, but this time she didn't say happy birthday, Mommy Alice.
- 30:54Speaker 3: She said happy birthday, Alice.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Okay, which is fine, Which is fine, of course. I
- 31:02Speaker 2: mean I think you're.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Look, it's fair to say you're blessed by frankly, any
- 31:12Speaker 1: communication that's coming from April.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Yes, so that's right around your birthday May twentieth.
- 31:19Speaker 4: Then what and then I I write, I write back
- 31:27Speaker 4: to her, you know, we were trying to reschedule another time,
- 31:34Speaker 4: but we weren't. It just didn't seem to work out, okay.
- 31:39Speaker 3: And then.
- 31:40Speaker 4: I wrote, I wrote her a letter telling her, you know,
- 31:44Speaker 4: I'd be as I'd be supportive to her and be
- 31:47Speaker 4: a listening ear.
- 31:49Speaker 3: And it meant so much.
- 31:50Speaker 4: To her as and she was so happy that she
- 31:53Speaker 4: said she called me mom, which really meant the world
- 31:56Speaker 4: to me.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Well, you are her mom?
- 32:01Speaker 3: Yes, so.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Is it was? There was there any communication after that?
- 32:11Speaker 1: Yes, we're into the beginning of June now right, yes, okay.
- 32:16Speaker 3: Where it meant it meant the world to her.
- 32:19Speaker 4: Where she just she said, she said in the text
- 32:26Speaker 4: that she wants that she wanted to talk about the
- 32:30Speaker 4: memory book and whatever and anything else that was on
- 32:33Speaker 4: her mind.
- 32:36Speaker 3: And I and I was just being patient.
- 32:43Speaker 2: How difficult is that for you to be patient?
- 32:49Speaker 4: It's been a long, a long role sometimes it's been
- 32:53Speaker 4: ups and downs, but sometimes I just want to throw
- 32:56Speaker 4: in the towel. But my friends kept, My friend Sanise
- 33:00Speaker 4: and others had just told me to get back up
- 33:03Speaker 4: and just keep going. And once it became a piece
- 33:08Speaker 4: and God gave me the peace, the doors started opening
- 33:12Speaker 4: it up more and more.
- 33:14Speaker 1: I think there's a good number of people watching and
- 33:17Speaker 1: listening right now, Alice that would echo that and drop
- 33:24Speaker 1: a comment of support and love for you to not
- 33:30Speaker 1: throw in the towel, to hang in there, but again,
- 33:39Speaker 1: tread lightly.
- 33:40Speaker 2: And go easy baby steps.
- 33:43Speaker 1: You know it's this is a lot of lost time here,
- 33:48Speaker 1: and trying to make it all up quickly.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Can go up up in flames quickly.
- 33:56Speaker 1: So it's so important to just let this relationship just
- 34:05Speaker 1: be what it is. Yeah, and she knows how to
- 34:09Speaker 1: get in touch with you now, she knows where you live.
- 34:15Speaker 1: I'm guessing she's got an email address, but she's definitely
- 34:18Speaker 1: got your cell phone number. Yes, she knows where mont
- 34:21Speaker 1: Pillier is. Yes, she's still living in Burlington as far
- 34:26Speaker 1: as far as you know. She's been away on vacation
- 34:30Speaker 1: for quite a while now. Where not sure if she's
- 34:38Speaker 1: back yet. Yes, but here we are approaching the bottom
- 34:47Speaker 1: half of July, summer of twenty twenty five, and we've
- 34:54Speaker 1: got a few more really beautiful months left before the snowflies.
- 35:04Speaker 2: And this would be.
- 35:09Speaker 1: More than a dream come true for you to just
- 35:12Speaker 1: be able to have some time with April, some real
- 35:17Speaker 1: face time.
- 35:18Speaker 3: Yes, And it.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Doesn't have to we don't have to bite off more
- 35:24Speaker 1: than we can chew right away. You would take five minutes,
- 35:29Speaker 1: you'd take ten minutes, you'd take five hours, yes, if
- 35:34Speaker 1: it was given to you.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Yes, But that.
- 35:40Speaker 1: Face time is something that I think you're really hoping for, Yes,
- 35:45Speaker 1: just to be able to sit down together, look at
- 35:48Speaker 1: each other in the eye, and maybe April can learn
- 35:53Speaker 1: more of the details about who you are are, your life,
- 36:03Speaker 1: your history, and how everything unfolded you coming to Vermont,
- 36:12Speaker 1: you having a relationship with this man and having a
- 36:17Speaker 1: child together, and then all of the things that transpired
- 36:23Speaker 1: after that, Yeah, and just being able to have that
- 36:29Speaker 1: conversation yeah, which is going to be if it happens,
- 36:36Speaker 1: is going to be a very private moment for both
- 36:39Speaker 1: of you.
- 36:40Speaker 2: And I'm hoping that.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Someone, even me, anyone can help make that happen and
- 36:54Speaker 1: get you two together, even here on the State House,
- 37:00Speaker 1: lawn or anywhere where you've.
- 37:02Speaker 2: Got some quiet time.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Maybe not with all the weed whackers that are going
- 37:09Speaker 1: off around here, but maybe some quiet time somewhere where
- 37:14Speaker 1: you can focus on one another.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Yeah, and then maybe allowed that to.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Turn into another meeting where you're able to share some
- 37:30Speaker 1: more information.
- 37:33Speaker 3: I know God's got a plan.
- 37:35Speaker 2: Do you really believe that?
- 37:37Speaker 3: Yes? I do. I really do.
- 37:45Speaker 4: This.
- 37:47Speaker 1: I was so happy to hear that she had reached
- 37:51Speaker 1: out to you shortly after that podcast episode, and the
- 37:56Speaker 1: day before Mother's Day. I mean, that's huge, huge, And
- 38:01Speaker 1: the day after Mother's Day, the day of Mother's Day.
- 38:05Speaker 2: Our Mother's Day itself, Mother's Day itself. What's next, Alice?
- 38:15Speaker 3: I'm waiting.
- 38:17Speaker 4: Till she comes back from pu vacation and she'll get
- 38:21Speaker 4: She said she would give me some dates and times
- 38:25Speaker 4: when it be convenient for us to meet together.
- 38:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:31Speaker 1: But she's got your cell phone number.
- 38:35Speaker 4: Yes, and we've been texting back and walk there you go,
- 38:41Speaker 4: that's the baby steps right there. Yes, but I know,
- 38:46Speaker 4: I'm very thankful to God for all that he has
- 38:50Speaker 4: done for me.
- 38:53Speaker 1: You have such a beautiful soul, beutiful heart. You are
- 39:01Speaker 1: such a remarkably strong woman. Everything that you did leading
- 39:09Speaker 1: up to the birth of April, you were absolutely committed
- 39:20Speaker 1: to following through with your responsibility of being not only
- 39:26Speaker 1: a mother, but being the best mother that you could
- 39:31Speaker 1: possibly be. Yes, there are others in our country world
- 39:44Speaker 1: that might share a similar story like this and have
- 39:49Speaker 1: had maybe some similar experience relating to what you've been
- 39:55Speaker 1: through as someone with a disability, no matter what that
- 40:02Speaker 1: disability is, physical, cognitive, whatever. What's being done behind us
- 40:12Speaker 1: in the state House to prevent something like this from happening.
- 40:22Speaker 4: I've been working with my legislator at Connor Casey about
- 40:26Speaker 4: which we're working on a bill to help parents with disabilities.
- 40:32Speaker 4: I'm also talking to Karen Topper to help me get
- 40:38Speaker 4: in touch with the commissioner for me to talk to
- 40:42Speaker 4: the commissioner of DCF. I'm also I also spoke to
- 40:48Speaker 4: another legislator.
- 40:50Speaker 3: I can't remember her whole name.
- 40:52Speaker 4: Her name is Keisha and she's on the Judicial Committee,
- 40:56Speaker 4: and she said that she would she would like me
- 40:59Speaker 4: to testify.
- 41:01Speaker 3: At the state.
- 41:02Speaker 2: House justify about what about what happened.
- 41:06Speaker 3: To me and what happened to Also, I.
- 41:09Speaker 4: Know I know a woman that she used to work
- 41:14Speaker 4: for d CF and but she left d CF and
- 41:17Speaker 4: she was working with the parent with disability, and she
- 41:23Speaker 4: would have they would not let her go in the
- 41:25Speaker 4: courtroom top to advocate for the the the mother. And
- 41:31Speaker 4: then I told I told the legislator that because she
- 41:36Speaker 4: told me that the guardiument Liam had come to the
- 41:41Speaker 4: home and.
- 41:42Speaker 3: Asked the ask the parents, not the parents.
- 41:46Speaker 4: So I asked the well they would forced the parents
- 41:50Speaker 4: if they were going to adopt the child, and and
- 41:53Speaker 4: the and the husband had said no, the goal is
- 41:56Speaker 4: for reunification, for the for the how to be with
- 42:01Speaker 4: the mother, and the guard Aliam had said she'll never
- 42:05Speaker 4: get her child back. And then they moved the child
- 42:11Speaker 4: to another another home, and my friend was and her
- 42:18Speaker 4: husband was still helping the mother. And then eventually she
- 42:23Speaker 4: did get her child, her child back. But it's very
- 42:27Speaker 4: terrible that you know that people have control of other
- 42:30Speaker 4: people's lives. And I'm just advocating to help all the
- 42:36Speaker 4: parents not go through what I went.
- 42:38Speaker 1: Through, other parents with disabilities with disabilities. Okay, what is
- 42:46Speaker 1: what is is? Is there a bill that's being created
- 42:51Speaker 1: that's being worked on right now? Is it Connor Casey
- 42:55Speaker 1: that's drafting that?
- 42:56Speaker 4: Yes, kind of Casey's drafting that and I also share
- 43:01Speaker 4: the link about my show with Connor so he can
- 43:05Speaker 4: share that with all the other legislators.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Has he seen that to you know, I don't know what.
- 43:10Speaker 4: He actually has seen them seen it, but we have
- 43:13Speaker 4: talked about it.
- 43:14Speaker 1: Because this is the third time, Alice, that you've been
- 43:17Speaker 1: on aired out. Yes, to share your story. Yes, and
- 43:25Speaker 1: we're making some progress with connecting you in April. But
- 43:33Speaker 1: that's one side of the story. The other side of
- 43:36Speaker 1: the story is, like you just said, advocating for others
- 43:40Speaker 1: to prevent this from happening to others with disability.
- 43:47Speaker 4: Yes, because there's like and when I have my ALP
- 43:51Speaker 4: zero report, there's like eighty this is eighty percent of parents.
- 43:55Speaker 4: They use this as a strike against parents with disabilities.
- 44:00Speaker 4: And it's happening in thirty seven states. So just trying
- 44:05Speaker 4: to get.
- 44:05Speaker 1: The word out thirty seven states. Yes, So listen, the
- 44:14Speaker 1: last time I had you on the air, I said
- 44:17Speaker 1: something that was very unscripted. And I can get myself
- 44:27Speaker 1: in trouble pretty easily, Alice, especially when you're doing a
- 44:32Speaker 1: live podcast.
- 44:36Speaker 2: But I.
- 44:41Speaker 1: Don't necessarily know how to put this perfectly into words
- 44:48Speaker 1: in a way where someone's not going to be offended
- 44:53Speaker 1: or take it the wrong way, or take it out
- 44:55Speaker 1: of context. But I will attempt again right now, just
- 45:02Speaker 1: like I did last time.
- 45:06Speaker 2: The feeling that I have is that.
- 45:11Speaker 1: They're there are people in this world that for a
- 45:27Speaker 1: whole list of lots of different reasons, whatever they may be,
- 45:33Speaker 1: We could sit here and list them off all day,
- 45:36Speaker 1: but there's people that just maybe aren't fit or prepared
- 45:49Speaker 1: or set up to accept the responsibility to be a parent.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Giving birth to some one alone is that's biological, man,
- 46:09Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. And it's like being a parent.
- 46:12Speaker 1: That's that's a noun and it's a verb. To parent
- 46:19Speaker 1: someone is a big job. It's a ton of responsibility,
- 46:22Speaker 1: even one kid. I only have one kid, Alice, and
- 46:26Speaker 1: that's that's plenty.
- 46:28Speaker 2: For this old fella. It's a lot of work every day.
- 46:33Speaker 1: I don't know what I would do with without Charlin
- 46:39Speaker 1: helping to to parent. It's a big job. But not
- 46:48Speaker 1: everyone when they give birth is mentally ready to be
- 47:06Speaker 1: the best possible parent that they can be. Maybe they've
- 47:11Speaker 1: got some issues.
- 47:13Speaker 2: That are in their way.
- 47:14Speaker 1: Maybe it's addiction, maybe who knows what it is. But
- 47:26Speaker 1: yet they still are allowed to have their kid or
- 47:32Speaker 1: their kids and.
- 47:33Speaker 2: Have more and not really make.
- 47:39Speaker 1: Or be able to make the best personal sacrifice that
- 47:45Speaker 1: they need to do to be a better person so
- 47:48Speaker 1: that they can be a better parent. And residually we
- 47:53Speaker 1: see that effect come down right through the child and
- 47:59Speaker 1: through their brothers and sisters if there's multiple children, and
- 48:04Speaker 1: we see that cycle, and I see it, we all
- 48:10Speaker 1: have seen that. I think you know that the gist
- 48:13Speaker 1: at what I'm trying to get here, I know I'm rambling,
- 48:18Speaker 1: But then I.
- 48:18Speaker 2: Think about you that.
- 48:27Speaker 1: Not only are you a good person, a beautiful person,
- 48:32Speaker 1: but you were so committed to being that best mother
- 48:40Speaker 1: that you wanted to be for that one kid, totally
- 48:45Speaker 1: utterly devoted and committed. But that opportunity was interfered with
- 48:53Speaker 1: and taken from you from others that felt that they
- 49:01Speaker 1: knew better, yes, or that they had their the best
- 49:05Speaker 1: interest of your child more than you, And that's wrong. Yes,
- 49:16Speaker 1: there's plenty of people out there that.
- 49:21Speaker 2: Are just not.
- 49:24Speaker 1: They're not great parents. Let's just say it how it is.
- 49:28Speaker 1: And here's you willing, able, totally able to give love, support, encouragement, discipline, structure.
- 49:42Speaker 1: I could go on to your child that was stripped
- 49:47Speaker 1: from you. Yeah, there's so many things that we need
- 49:54Speaker 1: to do better in our state, our country, but here
- 49:59Speaker 1: in Vermont, this story has got to be brought more
- 50:06Speaker 1: to the surface. This situation with advocating for people with
- 50:16Speaker 1: disabilities to have that opportunity to be a great parent. Yes,
- 50:20Speaker 1: needs to not get dusted under the rug anymore. Whatever
- 50:27Speaker 1: this bill is, whatever you'll find out for me, what
- 50:30Speaker 1: the name of the bill is, the number of the bill,
- 50:33Speaker 1: all the details in this bill. Will that be introduced
- 50:36Speaker 1: to the legislature this winter?
