- 1:22is June the eleventh of nineteen forty nine, and the title is The Pigeon's
- 1:26Blood, Get This and Get It Straight. Crime's as Suckers Road. Those
- 1:32who travel had wind up in the gut, a prison of the grave.
- 1:36There's no other end but they never learned. This one had soft brown eyes
- 1:40in an accent, and she came to town with a job to do.
- 1:42But before it was done, death It struck three times. Then she was
- 1:47gone. No because of thirty drops of pigeons blood worth one hundred and fifty
- 1:52thousand bucks from the pen of Raymond Trampler, upstanding author of Mistery, comes
- 1:59his most famous character and crime's most deadly enemy. As we present the Adventures
- 2:05of Philip Marlowe, now with Gerald Moore starred as Philip Marlowe. We bring
- 2:19you tonight's exciting story, The Pigeon's Blood. At five o'clock of any weekday
- 2:38afternoon, the lobby of the Started building in downtown Los Angeles is a mess
- 2:44of milling office workers. So I was ten impolite minutes peering into chattering faces
- 2:49before I found my new client, Charlene Danielle. When she called me an
- 2:53hour ago, a slight French accent had been coated with worry as she identified
- 2:58herself as an illustrator for a fashion maga with offices in the building. He
- 3:01said that she needed help. She was huddled in the shadowed far corner of
- 3:06the lobby like a frightened puppy going through his first thunderstorm. When I was
- 3:09close to her, she stepped into the light and hurriedly took my arm.
- 3:13I am glad you didn't disappoint him. Mister Mallow, Come along, please
- 3:15quickly. There's a bar just across the lobby where we can talk. All
- 3:19right, come along please. It's already soft, lustrous hair that was shingled
- 3:23into a thousand short curls which kept running into one another, framed a beautiful
- 3:28face and a wisp of a smile that never seemed to leave her lips.
- 3:31Labeled her gentle people. I couldn't quite get over it. When we were
- 3:36inside the bar and seated at the table, she was still talking. I
- 3:39was still thinking how lovely she was. Mister Mallow, mister Mallow, are
- 3:44you listening em? Oh? Yes, of course I am. Yes.
- 3:49Now, what I want you to do is simple, but very very important.
- 3:53It must be done at once, easy, easy, honey, that's
- 3:57not gonna help, honey, And one step at a time. What is
- 3:59it, Charlie, I'm sorry. It's a terrible man named Martin Loomis.
- 4:03He lives here in Los Angeles on North Crossmore Street, number seventy seventeen at
- 4:08private house. He is the one who had the collection stolen from Vivian's father.
- 4:12I know he Wait a minute, who slow around the corners? Now?
- 4:15First of all, what's the collection of ruby, mister Marlowe, rare
- 4:18pigeon's blood, ruby, exquisite one, the thirty of them worth at least
- 4:23the very least one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Tell me all the rubies
- 4:28as lovely as you are, please, mister Marlowe. Okay, okay.
- 4:30Who's Vivian? My best friend, the girl I grew up with in Lyon.
- 4:34She's still in France, but I got out before the war, to
- 4:38Mexico and Thenada. Some friends at the Ruvera Pacifico helped me to get to
- 4:42California. Vivian and her father, Maurice Ador, an old man. Now
- 4:46they lost everything. They had family, a home, their business, and
- 4:49then they had only the rubies left. We should bring us to this guy
- 4:53Lumas. So he does, mister Marlowe. He was in France only last
- 4:57month. A guest in the Shadoor home, A charming American businessman who was
- 5:01going to buy the rubies, just wouldn't say when tell me, Charlene.
- 5:05Did anybody actually see him take the stone? No, but there's no doubt
- 5:10that he did it. Mister Marlowe. He was one of the few persons
- 5:13who knew when Monsieur gardeout kept them. What about the police? Oh no,
- 5:15no, mister marlow not yet. Only when we know that Loomis still
- 5:19has the stones, when we know where the rubies are. You see,
- 5:24any hurried arrest would only mean that the jewels would be gotten with us gone
- 5:28forever. Why isn't vivin here. Monsieur Gardeaux told you he is an old
- 5:32man, a broken man, and they are penniless. The rubies were going
- 5:35to be sold. That's why this Loomis was visiting with him. Now,
- 5:41please, mister Marlowe, can you do this for me? Can you find
- 5:45out where the jewels are? It would mean so much if we can return
- 5:48them so much? Yeah, where can I find you? Later? Charline?
- 5:54I live at the Bradford Arms. The telephone number is Sunset one two
- 5:58to nine. Now what is your feet? Well, I we'll talk about
- 6:04it later. Huh, All right, you are kind. I only hope
- 6:10that later isn't too far away for Monsieur Giardeau's sake, why why? Yes?
- 6:15For for everybody's sake. Good luck. Somehow or another, I managed
- 6:27to stop at all the red lights and go on all the green ones and
- 6:30not hit anyone all the way from downtown LA, where I'd left Charlene,
- 6:34up into Hollywood and over to Marty Loomis's house at seventy seven ten or Rossmore
- 6:40parking at half a block away, I stood looking at the rambling White House
- 6:42Vintage nineteen fifteen. I was startled into action by a wiry, white haired
- 6:46old boy in search of a match. After a quick servicing job, I
- 6:50moved up to the door. As I knocked on the massive display of aging
- 6:55oak, I decided that Marlow should play the role of crooked jeweler to ease
- 6:58the entrance. When the door finally opened and an Ox and sharing a blue
- 7:02surge, answered, I wasn't too happy with my choice of rolls. A
- 7:05big club would have been better. Yeah, what do you want? Marty
- 7:10Loomis? Is he in? Who's asking questions? Hey? The name's Becker,
- 7:15mutual friend recommended me to him. Does Lefty know about this? He
- 7:19shouldn't? Wh're not you ask him? Okay, come on, in relax
- 7:24while I find out thanks any place in particular. Yeah, flat on your
- 7:29big mouth and don't bother going for your gun. I'll do it for you.
- 7:34A nice thirty eight at that? Now your wallet, lefty, that
- 7:44you were picking up your que fast, didn't you mischief? Oh Marlow,
- 7:48private detective? What were you thinking about when you bit big mouth? Something
- 7:54nice and calico? Your warm buster? My mistake? Where do we go
- 7:59from here? You know? Place till I make a phone call? Excuse
- 8:03me, sir Westwood nine nine oh three, Yeah, my number, uh
- 8:11Gladstone two seven four to two just won't take long? Marlow? Then you
- 8:16and I can in that. Oh hello, Tony, Oh it's chalky.
- 8:22No, no, I looked every place. No, honey, I tell
- 8:26you the stuff just ain't here. But something else is a private dick named
- 8:31Marlow. I don't know. Yeah, yeah, probably one of that stinking
- 8:37Slaters boys. But you don't have to worry about Marlow. So long,
- 8:41baby, your mother, Chucky, listen to Laos. I got one question
- 8:45to ask you don't want to straight answer fast? Are you working for zig
- 8:48Slater? I don't remember. Well, that's too bad, you know,
- 8:52I might have to get nasty. If you don't cooperate, doesn't much make
- 8:54any difference whether I cooperate or not. Let's face it, at chucky,
- 8:58all right, let's do just big mouse. I. By the time I
- 9:16sorted my legs out from those that belonged to the coffee table, jockey was
- 9:20gone. But in his wake there were three things that a very fast,
- 9:24superficial search revealed. My gun in the hall outside empty, next to the
- 9:30door, my wallet intact, and near the overturned coffee table. Upawn ticket
- 9:33from the Ryan Loan Company corner hell an eighth received for one great topcote right
- 9:39sleeve, ripped alow in seven dollars and fifty cents, I dropped into my
- 9:43pocket, then put through a call a one lieutenanty Bar at police headquarters.
- 9:46In a few minutes, I knew that Zick Slater was a fence with done
- 9:50time twice on stolen property charges, and at present could be found in or
- 9:54around a shop on Locienaga Boulevard near Melrose, where he sold of all things
- 9:58tropical fish. I hung up and started out of the door of my car,
- 10:03but in less than fifty feet I knew I wasn't alone. My shadow
- 10:07was the shock of white hair, who earlier had stopped me for a match.
- 10:09It was his turn to be surprised when I suddenly will gret that both
- 10:13his lapels and shocked. Well, you want to believe me, I just
- 10:16want to rearrange your marbles. When you're started talking, it comes out straight.
- 10:18Now. Why you're following me and don't tell me you need me another
- 10:22match? Come on, I'm tolding you because I want to warn you what
- 10:26a giant of a man I just saw New York car and a beat up
- 10:28blue Surge maybe yeah, yeah, yeah, that's right. You see.
- 10:30I live across the street, and after you gave me that match, I
- 10:33took my regular evening walk. But when I got back, I saw this
- 10:35man, this giant. He was going to let the air out of your
- 10:37tires, I know, but I stopped him. Yes, sir, I
- 10:41yelled him real loud, and he ran away. He cursed me first.
- 10:45Nah, Nah, aren't you sorry? You shook me like you did?
- 10:50Yeah? I am that lets you shake me back. But there isn't time,
- 10:52pop. I don't know no matter, fell I guess I can figure
- 10:54it all right. I mean, the way you're acting must be a beautiful
- 10:58girl behind this someplace? How was this right? Right? Just to make
- 11:03sure she stays that way. You'll excuse me, but I got to see
- 11:05a man about some tropical fish. It's a long pop zig Slaty's place in
- 11:15Losianga was three walls lined almost solid with bubbling tanks to wahoom for the kind
- 11:18of screwy looking fish that made you wonder what they could possibly see with a
- 11:22bad case of DT's. Slater was small and slight, with black darting eyes
- 11:26that were too large for the rest of his face, which was prune winkled,
- 11:31shaped like a coke bottle, and had all come hither look of an
- 11:33octopus. He was on the phone. It wasn't until I was close enough
- 11:37to hear the number he was after that I was. I was glad he
- 11:39was having trouble because it was the same digit arrangement that Chalky had called earlier
- 11:43and prefixed westward as well. No, right, I did not go my
- 11:48nine three three. It was worse with N nine all three, that's right,
- 11:52all three? Yeah? Hello Toby zi Hey darling, where have you
- 12:01been? I try to reach you half a dozen times? Walk? Oh
- 12:05well, look, baby, you meet me over it? Wait a minute,
- 12:09lost something, mister. H oh. Yes, as a matter of
- 12:13fact, I have one of my twin sawd tails died. I was just
- 12:16admiring yours here. I'd like to buy one. I'll be right with you.
- 12:18Huh. I meet me at the blue Chip in thirty minutes. Ah
- 12:22sweet, Now, don't worry. I'm a little bit late. I got
- 12:24a few things to do. Fake right, goodbye, baby sawd tailed,
- 12:30mister? Or a dollar ton of dollar thirty five and a dollar eighty?
- 12:31What'll it be? Why an't they started at dollar ten? Uh? Huh
- 12:35at the last place. I only played ninety cents for a sawd tale good
- 12:37one too. Then maybe you'd better go back to the last place, sir.
- 12:41Well, maybe I had good night, sir, and I was outside
- 12:52my car and pointed toward the blue Chip, which was the next speakeasy on
- 12:54Santa Monica Boulevard that had quite never gotten over it. I knew that I
- 12:58had something to work before it was time to call Charlene and report that so
- 13:03far I had located neither the Rubies nor Marty Loomis. With luck, I
- 13:07could have words with Toby at the blue Chip before Slater arrived. So twenty
- 13:09minutes later, when I was there and seated it all alone, table for
- 13:13two drink in front of me. I looked up at the sound of high
- 13:16heels clicking toward me and the five and a half feet of blonde that grew
- 13:20out of them and wrap around swathed. When I called Toby by name and
- 13:24she pivoted like she was built on a hinge. I was back in business.
- 13:28I don't know you. What do you want if it's Handy Chalky's telephone
- 13:31number? You're Marlow, aren't you? Yes? In private detective you ordered
- 13:37bounced to ran. I let's not waste any more of each other's time.
- 13:39Toby wears Marty Loomis. I'm sorry, I never heard of him or the
- 13:43pigeon blood rubies. Who are you working for? Marlow? Don't you remember?
- 13:46And when a Slater's boy, you're a liar, not a double cross
- 13:50at Toby, Well, what do you mean by that? When you're on
- 13:52the phone with Chalky brother Ziggy is referred to as the stinking Slater, but
- 13:56when Slater's on with it, it's sugar and spice all the way around,
- 14:00which means what that you're not even close to being on the level with one
- 14:03of them. I discount Chalky because he's kind. You higher pay and forget
- 14:07when the job's done, Marlow, so behave. He's right outside that back
- 14:09door. It's a little thoughtless of you, isn't it, Toby. The
- 14:13lad's top coats in hockey might catch cold that I'd hate to see. I'll
- 14:16bet. Now look, Marlow once more? What are you after? One
- 14:20Ruby's to Marty Loomis. If I can't help you find either of them,
- 14:24then I go to slater on whose behalf of my client, who represents the
- 14:28real owner of the stones named what it escapes me, Toby, let's just
- 14:31call her a lovely lady from France. Uh from France. For a minute,
- 14:37I thought you were on the side of law and or what's as different?
- 14:41Marty Loomis is dead. Marlow has been all night in the closet of
- 14:43his study at seven seven one old North Ross Moore. What and just so
- 14:46you don't miss the point one thing more. I found the body, but
- 14:50first outside I found something else running away. It was a girl, Marlow,
- 14:54a girl with a French accent. In just a moment the second act
- 15:09of Philip Marlowe. But first for those who delight in the fast action and
- 15:13faster thinking that thwart the evil doer. CBS brings you three outstanding examples every
- 15:20Sunday. The Green Lama brings you the adventures of wealthy young Jethro Dumont,

- 15:43of the Maltese Falcon, and many other crime classics. You can find these
- 15:46thrilling examples of mystery adventure delight every Sunday on most of these CBS stations.
- 15:54And now with our star Gerald Moore, we return to the second act of
- 15:58Philip Marlowe and Tonight's story, The Pigeon's Blood. When Toby said French accent,
- 16:12it rocked me right back on my heels. I stood there with my
- 16:15mouth open, trying to reconcile death in a closet with a soft, deep
- 16:19brown of Charlene's eyes all the blonde in front of me twisted her mouth into
- 16:23a victorious smartender as a cobra's. I got up and went out the front
- 16:27way, dragging what was left of my pride behind me. I had to
- 16:32know the truth about Charlene, so I called her. She answered on the
- 16:36first ring, and I made my pitch. I said, I thought I
- 16:37knew where the rubies were hidden, and told her to meet me at seventy
- 16:40seven ten Rossmore. And I drove to Rosmore and waited, and five minutes
- 16:44later a cab stopped down the street and she got out. So I went
- 16:48to meet her. Marlow, Yeah, come on this way, Charlene.
- 16:52I here, Marlo in this house. The rubies, I mean, we'll
- 16:55find out, baby, Come on side, doors open, I said,
- 16:57I wasn't sure, and I'm not a lot of things, and watched the
- 17:02stairs. You should leave to the study. You're still with me. I'm
- 17:06coming, okay, Charley. Now, if I've been lied to, this
- 17:11is the place to check. I'll start with that closet there, the close,
- 17:15Yes, open it up, go on, open it? No,
- 17:18No, I got it. You can't because you already know what's inside,
- 17:21don't you. No? No, oh, I didn't do it. I
- 17:27did you know it was there? So you must have been in here before.
- 17:30Yes, yes I was, I admitted. I tried to see no
- 17:33miss myself this afternoon. I followed him downtown, but I lost him.
- 17:37When I got back here, I came in and I found him like that.
- 17:41I didn't know what to do. I called you, but then I
- 17:44lied to you because I was afraid. You're still afraid, So maybe you're
- 17:47still lying. No, no, this time is the truth, all of
- 17:49it. You're not holding anything back. No, no, that's all of
- 17:52it all, Phil. Please don't force me. Please, you must rus
- 17:56what was worth? I thought, I the door cloth, I must be
- 18:00jumpy. I guess I have a cigarette. Yeah, why it's a bond
- 18:07ticket. Oh yeah, it's my brains. Can't you tell the Ryan Lone
- 18:11Company corner Hill Street and eighth at Hell and eight. Don't worry about it,
- 18:15Sharlley, and it's not mine, longs to a guy named Chucky where
- 18:18the hawk is winter wardrobe. They keep himself in Hamburgers. Forget it?
- 18:21You want that cigarette? And no, no, no, come on,
- 18:23let's get out of this room. Come on, please, I pill There
- 18:27is someone here, a shadow moved on that wall of the back hole.
- 18:32Hey, you're right, asten. You beat it out that side door.
- 18:34Go back to your hotel, and white girl, see this is I want
- 18:37to stay with you. Get out of here, hurry, hurry, all
- 18:42right, creep, crawl out of the wood work. Come on. I
- 18:45know you're present because you like your shadows sticking out right up out here.
- 18:49Ow well, well, slimy little swordtail salesman himself, what are you doing
- 18:56here? Well, i'll tell you, Marlow. I'm telling you got my
- 18:59name too. Oh huh. And more from a short talk with a platinum
- 19:03blonde named Toby. Oh yeah, fencing forrest later her a Loomis Cincy.
- 19:07You're find things out, don't you. Well, I didn't want to do
- 19:10it. I've been going straight since I got paroled. But legitimate business has
- 19:14been louder. When Loomis wanted you to arrange a deal, you took him
- 19:15up. Huh yeah, but right away it got too hot. I had
- 19:18it all set until that blonde started cutting in on Loomis. I don't go
- 19:22for that. Nobody's got a chance on a double cross, for instance,
- 19:26I know what's in the closet, see and Toby's the one that put him
- 19:30there. She told me Toby killed him. Did she have the stones?
- 19:34I don't know. I guess so, because she was trying to make me
- 19:37go through with the deal, but I turned her down. Then I had
- 19:41a sap that gorilla chalky to get away. It's good, but it won't
- 19:44fit Slater. Why'd you come back here? Clean up the joint with my
- 19:47record? All that would take is for my phone number, even my initials,
- 19:49to turn up here, and I'm cooked? Where does Toby live?
- 19:52If I tell you, will you give me a brother? Tell me anyway
- 19:55and faster. I'll give you a break and a sat of your head.
- 19:56Let's have a talk. Okay, okay, one fifty six South Ogden Drive
- 20:00apartments. See now, how about it? Pow, what do you forget?
- 20:06You saw me here? You lost your wanting because things got tough that
- 20:10they had in your begetting callouses from counting money or a crummy spider slightest.
- 20:12So stay out of my way, because next time we made I'll step on
- 20:15you. The little man rolled his big head up at me and grinned.
- 20:22I looked at it the minute, then shoved at hard the one side and
- 20:25walked out the way things stood. I figured the next move, which was
- 20:27mine, had to be first to call the police to report Loomis's murder,
- 20:32the second to fast pressure play on a faster blonde named Toby. But I
- 20:36was wrong on both counts because I was halfway to my car when I found
- 20:38out the next move wasn't mine at all. Out of the corner of my
- 20:41eye, I caught a shadow easing told me under the cover of the hedge
- 20:45with the white hair duffer again and the setup was just like before. So
- 20:48I saw no reason why the same maneuver wouldn't work twice. I slowed down
- 20:52to give him plenty of time. When I was sure he was right behind
- 20:56me, I turned fast and swung thin. How many times do you think
- 21:02you can pull las? Done? Son? Okay, it was my mistake,
- 21:03Yes it was. And don't move because my gun goes off. I
- 21:07want to ask you a few things. I don't feel talkative. Who are
- 21:10you? And what's your racket? Son? Philip Marlow, private detective?
- 21:12What's yours? That doesn't happen to be any of your business? Son?
- 21:15I just say I'm looking for one Vivian Jardau happen to know where she is
- 21:19Vivian Ghiaradeau, sure right now, she's in France, Leona be specific.
- 21:23Yeah, she's in France right now, like her in Madagascar. Save yourself.
- 21:26Trouble, son, where's she? You know you wouldn't know the truth
- 21:30of it fell on you? What's your rangle? Marlow? Oh, come
- 21:33on, let's not be coid. It's the same as yours, A fist
- 21:34full of rubies. Well now you don't say, and I suppose that's why
- 21:38Vivian Jardou has been following Loomis around all that f and the Vivian again.
- 21:41You won't turn a loose, will you? Now? Listen? Son,
- 21:45Jardo dams here in town, I happen to know she hopped off on Norwegian
- 21:48freighter. I finally picked her up right here. She was tagging Loomis and
- 21:52I tagged her. We played ring around the Rosie clear downtown. I lost
- 21:56them in a traffic jam, but I picked up Lumas again for a few
- 21:57minutes at the corner of a hill and a job. No, girl,
- 22:00wait a minute, did you say Loomis? Was it hillin eighth? Yes,
- 22:03that's right? Why because I know a guy will give six bucks for
- 22:06a great topcoat on that corner. So whoever said you can't teach an old
- 22:10dog nude tricks wasn't nuts. It wasn't at one's called slapped the pistol and
- 22:15busted the old geezer. Sorry, Pop, it had to be I got
- 22:17business. It won't keep so long. I ran my car, piled in
- 22:26and headed down. Watch the boulevard wide open, because anyway I looked at
- 22:29it, Ryan's porn pillar at hillin eighth was home plate, and at the
- 22:32time I'd spent gabbing with Pop, there was a good chance that blood was
- 22:34already being spilled on an old gray top coat with a lining full of rubies.
- 22:37And when I remembered Charlie and had walked out with a pawn ticket led
- 22:41coat in her hand, I got a little sick. When I got to
- 22:44Hilly eighth, I spotted Ryan's place, squeezed into a four foot crevice between
- 22:47two tall buildings and dark inside. I cut my lights, park reloaded my
- 22:51thirty eight, and walked up the alley to the back door. It was
- 22:53standing open on foot, and inside a flashlight was lying on a table.
- 22:57While moving in and out of its beams, she clawed through a rack of
- 23:00secondhand top coats with Charlie had her feet face up on the floor with a
- 23:06nasty gash over one eye. Was a man who no doubt used to answer
- 23:08to the name of Ryan. I used the door open another foot, one
- 23:12end. I got as far as the glow of light before she saw him.
- 23:17I just slug him. Honey, you had the ticket, you could
- 23:18have just she didn't slug him, Marlow, I did Slayer. Yeah,
- 23:26don't turn around, just toss your gun back here. Come on, that's
- 23:30it. Well, it takes care of everybody. Now they're all here,
- 23:36so we can get back to work. Aren't you forgetting Toby in her trained
- 23:38ape. No, Toby can't make it, and Chalky won't without her.
- 23:42She can't make it because she's dead. I found a nice closet for her
- 23:48too. Oh. I told you a feb when I said she killed Loomis.
- 23:52I did that for both of them because they were double crossing me.
- 23:55They were cutting me out of my own deal, and they were laughing about
- 23:59it. I can't stand to have people left that it's my fault. Feel
- 24:03like I didn't wait for you when I when I realized that lou miss the
- 24:06coat. Not that joke here. I was sure that he had hidden the
- 24:08rubies in it for safe keeping. So I came here and now, and
- 24:11so did I and a quarter. Then I sat a little trap for the
- 24:15big strong man who steps on little spiders. Now you which coade? Is
- 24:21it? This one? No? No, I don't know, So it
- 24:23is this? Give it? No, No, you can't take a stay
- 24:26away from me, charl don't be a fool. Let him have the coat.
- 24:30The rubies in it are mine. They belonged to my father. I
- 24:33came halfway around the world to get them and to take them home, and
- 24:36I won't give them up to this this rote ugly little man. Wait,
- 24:45he's hit, sure, son, go here was as open as an invitation
- 24:49to the old timers picnic. I've been listening. No, don't move now,
- 24:52either one of you. I've still got some business with missus VIVI.
- 24:56Hey, come back here, Charli, Yeah, missed, that's your last
- 25:02chance. Believe me, a trigger happy jerk, she's off the door.
- 25:03Stand aside, son, I've got to get that girl, I don't think
- 25:07so. Who's car is that out there? Yours? Yeah? With a
- 25:11full tank of gas? What are you grinning? About okay, Son,
- 25:15she's gone your coat and Ruby get away from both of them. Didn't see
- 25:19and from the look on your face, you're not quite sure whether you've lost
- 25:23or one. Two hectic hours jammed with phone calls, police reports on Toby
- 25:37and Chucky, and long winded conversation in general, went by before the whole
- 25:41mess of dovetailed motives and overlapping authority were straightened out, to the point where
- 25:45Detective lieutenanty Bara decided to get along without us and turned me in my white
- 25:51head pal. Who yeh, who I blushed to discover is one Sam Harris,
- 25:56twenty years in opposite of the Immigration Service, loose on the town again.
- 26:00In Sam's car, we threaded through the traffic. Big night, wasn't
- 26:03that, Son? Yeah? You know, Sam, you should have told
- 26:07me who you were and saved yourself that swollen jaw. Yeah, that's all
- 26:10right in a mix up like this one was a few loose teeth better than
- 26:14a loose tongue any day. All I knew was that Vivianjadeau was an alien
- 26:18who jumped ship. I didn't know a thing about those rubies until I was
- 26:22right in the middle of it, and she just made up the whole story,
- 26:25huh about being Charlene Danielle and working here as an illustrator. That's right.
- 26:29We're gonna do about her hearts well son, as it works out.
- 26:32I'm on her side. Now. How's that she wants to get back to
- 26:34France, and it's my job to see that she does. There won't be
- 26:38any trouble. You know, she's a crazy kid to try what she did
- 26:42alone. But she made up her mind to get her rubies back and she
- 26:48did. Yeah, she's pretty too. Or did you happen to know it?
- 26:53Mm? You're not listening. I was looking at that metal you got
- 26:57there on your keychain, Pistol Marksmanship Champion, New York Service Range. You
- 27:04know, Harris, when you shot at Charlene tonight you wait a minute time?
- 27:10It was dark, and that medal is ten years old. Besides,
- 27:14it's not polite to put a man in the spot already had to argue with
- 27:17his conscience. My mistake. Will there's your car exactly where I said of
- 27:22the bee, right across from the airline passion the gate. Someone who had
- 27:26to make a plane in a hurry must have borrowed it. Amazing, isn't
- 27:30it? Good night, molow, see you again, Sam, and thanks.
- 27:42When Harris drove away, I walked over to my car and got in.
- 27:48I didn't start up by a way. Instead, I just sat there
- 27:52and thought of a plane fading off somewhere in the night, the girl from
- 27:56Friends with soft brown eyes, and remembered that I didn't even get a chance
- 28:02to say goodbye. But then I saw it. The notes stuck over the
- 28:07ignition key scribbled on an old envelope and hurried pencil. Well, it's said
- 28:14was someday, Sherry, Someday. The Adventures of Philip Marlowe Bringing You Raymond,
- 28:40Chandler's most famous character and crime's most deadly anime star Gerald Moore and are
- 28:45produced and directed by Norman McDonald. Script is by Meldon la Robert Mitchell and
- 28:51Gene Levitt. Featured in the cast were Alma Lawton, Edgar Barrier, Gloria
- 28:55Blondell, Herb Butterfield, and Barney Phillips. The special music is by Richard
- 29:04be sure and be with us again next week. When Philip Marlowe says easy
- 29:10money is a sucker's racket, this time it's started as a routine search for
- 29:14a rich girl's fiancee, and the trail led to a silent house, haunted
- 29:18by a face at the window and blood in an open cedar chest. But
- 29:22before it was over, it became a quest for a corpse that wouldn't sit
- 29:26still. Oh will he be in friends? The lady took a chance.
- 29:42Heilo the Dane will show who could resist romance. You'll be hearing four short
- 29:49lines ung sweetly later tonight, and to some bright lucky CBS listener, there'll
- 29:55be the key to fifty thousand dollars in prizes and cash. It's the new
- 30:00Fatom voice song on CBS's sensational Saturday Nights Sing It Again program and hour long
- 30:06bonanza of prizes, music, and gaiety. Phone calls go out to all
- 30:10the nation asking CBS listeners to solve gay little riddle songs. And for those
- 30:14who guess these riddles, it means a chance at the fifty thousand dollars Fatom
- 30:18Award, twenty five thousand in super prizes for solving the Fatom's identity, twenty
- 30:25five thousand more in cold cash for answering only one more question about the Fatom.
- 30:30Listen closely when Singing Again comes to you. On most of these same
- 30:33CBS network stations just a little later this evening. This is Roy Rowan speaking.
- 30:41Now stay tuned for Gangbusters, which follows immediately over most of these same
- 30:45stations. This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System. Welcome back. I
- 31:11love this episode, in particular Philip Marlowe's description of a Slater just absolutely perfect,
- 31:19and I have to admit I was surprised that Slater was the guilty party,
- 31:26as surprised as Marlowe. As a matter of fact, why love Philip
- 31:30Marlowe? This episode really seemed to do uncommonly well at capturing the spirit of
- 31:37the hard boiled detective genre. Well, now we do turn to listen or
- 31:42comments and feedback, and an email from Christy, who writes several years ago,
- 31:51my godmother introduced me to some of the old radio programs, including Red
- 31:56Skelton or Miss Brooks, Suspense Advance, and Philip marlow It was interesting to
- 32:02compare the last two in my mind of how a detective should sound. The
- 32:07former was too polished for me, but the latter, Oh, marlow is
- 32:12what a hard boiled private dick should be. A man who always strives for
- 32:16moral endings, even if he perhaps has to cross the law to do it,
- 32:21but it's always a case by case situation. AnyWho. I'll admit when
- 32:25I first started listening to your show, I just like the intro nothing against
- 32:29you, but I just wanted to listen to the show. Perhaps it was
- 32:31the mic, but it bothered me. Then my hands were too busy to
- 32:36jump past and I listened in. I enjoyed the insights on not just the
- 32:38mystery, but the cast, writers in much beyond. I'm catching up on
- 32:44my episodes and regret when I reached the end and am instead going day to
- 32:47day. I hope to hear more of the other shows out there, like
- 32:52Box thirteen, Rogues Gallery, Boston, Blackie and One starring Frank Sinatra and
- 32:59others. Keep it up, Christy, Well, thanks so much, Christy,
- 33:02and we have actually done Box thirteen in Rogues Gallery and Boston Blackie is
- 33:12in the on Deck Circle, and shortly after we finished Nick Carter, we'll
- 33:15be hearing from Boston Blackie. We still have a good ways to go through
- 33:20Nick Carter, and of course we'll get to Rocky Fortune for twenty five glorious
- 33:24weeks one of these years. I just want to make sure we do the
- 33:29whole series Justice, but thanks so much for your conn email Christy to appreciate
- 33:32it. We will be back tomorrow with Nick Carter and join us next Wednesday
- 33:38for another episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow. In the meantime, send
