- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to a new season as we get set
- 0:03Speaker 1: to christen the ice bus. I'm Bob Joyce alongside Adam
- 0:07Speaker 1: Jardino and head coach Mike Kavanaughs. We welcome you to a
- 0:09Speaker 1: new season of Ukon men's hockey on the Yukon Sports
- 0:13Speaker 1: Network that begins on Friday when the Huskies take on
- 0:16Speaker 1: Colgate in the first of two at the Descano Family
- 0:20Speaker 1: Ice Form and Mike is with us, as we mentioned,
- 0:22Speaker 1: and here we go, it's game week.
- 0:24Speaker 2: It's exciting. Yeah, we just had our first real practice
- 0:28Speaker 2: over the season. I shouldn't say that, but you know,
- 0:31Speaker 2: the first four weeks you're you're limited with the amount
- 0:34Speaker 2: of hours that you can practice, and that comes off
- 0:37Speaker 2: this week and we're at it and we had a
- 0:40Speaker 2: really good skate today and we're looking forward to teeing
- 0:43Speaker 2: it up on Friday.
- 0:44Speaker 3: How do you structure today's practice versus structuring the previous ones?
- 0:49Speaker 2: They are very similar. We just went a little bit
- 0:51Speaker 2: longer with special teams today pretty much, so it was
- 0:54Speaker 2: a very similar practice to what we've been doing for
- 0:56Speaker 2: the first hour, and then we probably did twenty five
- 0:59Speaker 2: minutes of specially teams after that.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Mike a lot of new faces on this team this season.
- 1:04Speaker 1: That's part of the challenge. It's not quite I don't
- 1:07Speaker 1: know five six years ago when the cond League class
- 1:09Speaker 1: came in, but because you do have four grad transfers.
- 1:12Speaker 1: But how they fitting in with this new system and
- 1:15Speaker 1: new team.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's been pretty seamless. It's a bright group.
- 1:19Speaker 2: They really catch on to the concepts that we're trying
- 1:22Speaker 2: to teach pretty quickly. You know. Again with that big group,
- 1:27Speaker 2: you know, there are two grad transfers and two transfers
- 1:30Speaker 2: who have played, so it's not all it's not fourteen freshmen.
- 1:33Speaker 2: It's some kids who have had some experience playing college
- 1:37Speaker 2: hockey before.
- 1:39Speaker 3: When we talked to you during media day about a
- 1:41Speaker 3: week ago, you'd mentioned and the guys had mentioned that
- 1:45Speaker 3: this team is faster. So is that individual work in
- 1:49Speaker 3: the off season. Is it getting the guys on the
- 1:51Speaker 3: ice and part of the training the last four weeks
- 1:53Speaker 3: has been keyed in on that. What makes this team faster?
- 1:57Speaker 2: I just think it's the players that we've brought in
- 2:00Speaker 2: just play at a quicker pace. I think it's you know,
- 2:03Speaker 2: some some teams can can be big, strong and heavy
- 2:08Speaker 2: and play that way, and other teams can be quick
- 2:10Speaker 2: and fast and play that way. So this team, you know,
- 2:14Speaker 2: you can win both ways, and we've won with big,
- 2:17Speaker 2: heavy teams, and this team, I think is going to
- 2:19Speaker 2: be just a little quicker and faster, and that's going
- 2:22Speaker 2: to be more of our m I think as the
- 2:24Speaker 2: season goes forward here.
- 2:26Speaker 1: With Mike Kavanaughs, we previous the upcoming season of twenty
- 2:28Speaker 1: four to twenty five Huskies. It gets in a way
- 2:30Speaker 1: this weekend, you lose a good chunk of your offensive
- 2:34Speaker 1: production from a season ago. How do you replace that? Who?
- 2:38Speaker 2: Who?
- 2:38Speaker 1: Where do you expect to see the offense pick up?
- 2:41Speaker 1: Because there were times last year. I mean I don't
- 2:43Speaker 1: have to bring it up, but there were a lot
- 2:44Speaker 1: of home games or goals were hard to find.
- 2:46Speaker 2: That's what I was going to say. I mean, we
- 2:48Speaker 2: really didn't score a lot of goals last year. So
- 2:51Speaker 2: I think there's only one way to go but up
- 2:53Speaker 2: for our team, you know, and we're bringing in some
- 2:55Speaker 2: players that have scored in the past though, So you know,
- 2:59Speaker 2: Kate and shayhan and had forty goals in the USHL.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I mean that's pretty impressive. That usually translates over Ethan Garduler.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I think was a fifty point guy. Ethan Whitcomb was
- 3:08Speaker 2: a fifty point guy in the USHL. You know Phillips
- 3:13Speaker 2: Satar at some point he was a very good player
- 3:16Speaker 2: over in the Swedish Junior League, and he's going to
- 3:18Speaker 2: be a really good player for US. Mike Murta had
- 3:21Speaker 2: a i think sixty points in the British Columbia League.
- 3:24Speaker 2: So we're bringing in some guys that you know, have
- 3:26Speaker 2: scored in the past. But I'm also, you know, thinking
- 3:30Speaker 2: Hudson Chandor is going to have a better year this year.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Statistically he had had He played well for US last year,
- 3:36Speaker 2: but statistically his numbers were down a little bit. I'm
- 3:39Speaker 2: expecting him to rebound. I think Jake Richard and Joey
- 3:42Speaker 2: Muldowney are poised to be guys that score for US.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I think Ryan Taddle is a guy that can score
- 3:49Speaker 2: for US. Jake Percival like so we have other guys
- 3:52Speaker 2: on the team I think are going to step up
- 3:54Speaker 2: and score some goals.
- 3:56Speaker 3: You mentioned Jake Richard and Joey Muldowney. Richard is a
- 4:01Speaker 3: product of the Buffalo Sabers. You've got Muldowney coming in
- 4:03Speaker 3: from the Sharks and so those are guys that have
- 4:05Speaker 3: some expectation for them just in terms of here, but
- 4:08Speaker 3: also beyond to the pro ranks. So for those two
- 4:11Speaker 3: guys freshman years over, what are those conversations like when
- 4:15Speaker 3: you're having those conversations saying, this is what we need
- 4:18Speaker 3: from you in year two.
- 4:20Speaker 2: I just want them to be I thought they both
- 4:22Speaker 2: had very good years for us last year. I just
- 4:24Speaker 2: want them to continue to get better, develop and grow
- 4:27Speaker 2: not only as hockey players but as human beings. And
- 4:30Speaker 2: if they do that, you know, statistically, over the my career,
- 4:34Speaker 2: those numbers go up. So you know, I don't think
- 4:37Speaker 2: the fact that their NHL draft picks really has anything
- 4:41Speaker 2: to do with how they're going to perform for US
- 4:44Speaker 2: at Yukon. You know, that's a projection that NHL scouts
- 4:49Speaker 2: are making. It's not necessarily like Hudson Chandor's not an
- 4:53Speaker 2: NHL draft pick, but he may be the all time
- 4:56Speaker 2: leading scorer by the time it's all said, you know,
- 4:58Speaker 2: when he leaves here. So you know, yes, it's in
- 5:02Speaker 2: some ways it's an indicator that this kid has a
- 5:04Speaker 2: chance to play at the next level, but it doesn't
- 5:06Speaker 2: necessarily mean it's going to translate in college hockey.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Right coming back from the summer, there are player interviews
- 5:13Speaker 1: by the way or Jake Rashard and Thomasineo, and I
- 5:15Speaker 1: asked them about what they did over the summer and
- 5:16Speaker 1: the conditioning. Did you see anybody take a significant jump
- 5:20Speaker 1: of the guys that are coming back from a conditioning standpoint.
- 5:23Speaker 2: I think a lot of them did. There was a
- 5:24Speaker 2: lot of them that stayed here this summer and worked
- 5:27Speaker 2: with Moe Butler, our strength coach, and she does a
- 5:30Speaker 2: phenomenal job. She's been with me the you know, this
- 5:33Speaker 2: is her twelfth year with me, so I've had nothing.
- 5:39Speaker 2: She's been the only strength coach I've had, and she's
- 5:41Speaker 2: done an incredible job here. I can't say enough about
- 5:44Speaker 2: her so much. I've just turned even all our conditioning
- 5:47Speaker 2: over to her.
- 5:48Speaker 1: So that's going to be a luxury that it.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Is when you have that type of faith and trust
- 5:54Speaker 2: in your strength coach. Because it's such an important position,
- 5:59Speaker 2: it may makes my job a lot easier and let's
- 6:04Speaker 2: say not as stressful.
- 6:05Speaker 1: One follow up on that, if I may, how much
- 6:08Speaker 1: in the summertime road work or off ice work versus
- 6:11Speaker 1: ice work do the kids put in?
- 6:15Speaker 2: I always think the off ice is more important in
- 6:18Speaker 2: the summer than the ice. Now the players always want
- 6:20Speaker 2: to get on the ice and work on different things.
- 6:23Speaker 2: But you know, Jerry Yorke used to say all the
- 6:26Speaker 2: time that at some point Winter's going to ask what
- 6:28Speaker 2: were you doing all summer? You know, And you know,
- 6:32Speaker 2: I think that's a very true statement.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Okay, more with Mike. We've got Tomasinio, Jake Richard coming up.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Jake at the bottom of the hour Town the follow
- 6:40Speaker 1: As you're listening to the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show, our
- 6:42Speaker 1: first of eight on the season, we're live at Bear Smokehouse,
- 6:45Speaker 1: Barbecue and Hartford and you're listening on a Monday night
- 6:47Speaker 1: here on Therfield.
