- 0:01Hello. My name is Vicky and I'm from
- 0:04Victoria, and I'm an alcoholic. And I'd like to share my story,
- 0:10my journey in alcoholism, I feel like I was born an alcoholic.
- 0:15I was born to a mother who had nicotine and alcohol was her
- 0:22main substance. And when I was in utero, that's
- 0:26what I was fed. Most of the time I was born.
- 0:30Very Premier just a few pounds, but I survived.
- 0:35And grew up in a dysfunctional home.
- 0:39I didn't know it was defunct dysfunctional.
- 0:41I just thought it was a an ordinary home, but I had a drunk
- 0:45mother and an angry father. And I was a street kid.
- 0:49I didn't have that mother. That would offer me a snack when
- 0:54I got home from school or Yeah, that loving words and things
- 1:01like that. Mum always seem to be on the
- 1:03bed. The, the neighborhood looked
- 1:05after me my neighbor's some bath me and fed me and yeah, I
- 1:11survived. I think they call it resilience.
- 1:14I grew up with resilience. So I'm an adult child of an
- 1:19alcoholic today. I have isms, I have control
- 1:25issues. I want everything to be just,
- 1:28right? And just so, so, And I also have
- 1:33Detachment issues too. I don't know how to explain it,
- 1:40but II don't like to be alone. I like to be in the middle of a
- 1:43lot of people or a lot of action.
- 1:46I love drama, I love things to be.
- 1:48Always exciting and keep moving and lots of things.
- 1:52Teenage years, I played a lot of sport went to work, didn't have
- 1:59many boyfriends or anything like that.
- 2:00That I was too busy for that. But yeah, I was married at an
- 2:04early age and had my first child at 26.
- 2:09But I because I didn't have that founding that love the example I
- 2:18suppose, I kept my kids clean, I keep my house clean and they
- 2:22were well fed, but I lacked that emotional connection with my
- 2:29kids. So yeah, they they tell me
- 2:33today. That that was a big tough.
- 2:35They thank goodness, don't mother and father their
- 2:38children. Like that.
- 2:41I had seven children because I thought I will have lots of kids
- 2:46and I love me and in my life will be perfect.
- 2:50But you know if that's my dysfunctional brain it was tough
- 2:56there for a long, long time. You know, one income looking
- 2:59after the children and no money, not enough money.
- 3:03But yeah, we survived, we bought a farm.
- 3:06We would block a land and I became a farmer's wife.
- 3:09Wife and milk cows and grew vegetables and was the Earth.
- 3:14Mother thought I was doing okay on the outside but on the inside
- 3:20I was dying. Yeah.
- 3:22My children grew up and I didn't need, they didn't need me so
- 3:27much. So I went out and got a job at
- 3:30the age of about 40 and that bottle in money and I could
- 3:36socialize a little bit and with that socialize And came going
- 3:41out to dinner and having visitors over for the dinner
- 3:45party and alcohol was introduced in the early days.
- 3:50There was never any alcohol in the house because there was no
- 3:53room in the fridge. It was, if it wasn't a
- 3:55nutritionally of any value, then it wasn't in the fridge.
- 4:00Anyways, they times changed money, circumstances changed and
- 4:06I could afford for orders. It didn't I wouldn't say it
- 4:13involved evolved my hat. My, I don't think it took over
- 4:18my life straight away. It took a few years and it was
- 4:23just mainly social, and it wasn't all the time.
- 4:26Just occasionally about 15 years down the track at the age of 55
- 4:32things. I don't know what happened, but
- 4:34things just went Went to custard.
- 4:39And then I started drinking daily.
- 4:42And I still felt that irritable and discontent, and I needed
- 4:50something because I didn't have the children to, to bury myself
- 4:54into, I didn't have to work so hard in the home anymore and so,
- 4:59I needed something to settle those nerves.
- 5:01So settle settle that brain, the spaghetti, the Spaghetti Head,
- 5:06you know, I call it the committee now and yeah.
- 5:10So life got a bit tedious. The husband was working away for
- 5:15months and months overseas. And I was home alone and yeah,
- 5:21feeling depressed, bit lonely. And so I turned to the bottle,
- 5:27it became a daily thing. I didn't have to hide it because
- 5:30nobody was home to see me. It just used to be a flag and I
- 5:35used to buy the Grog In the flagon flagon of cream, sherry
- 5:39and it would put me to sleep at night.
- 5:42I take it to bed with me and I'll even have a glass in on the
- 5:46side table instead of water. And I'd wake up in the middle of
- 5:49the night and have a drink and then down the track, it became a
- 5:54day. You know, I'd be drinking as
- 5:55soon as I got up in the morning. To get to work and see.
- 6:02I don't know how I did it really.
- 6:03I don't know how I drank so much and went to work and and did my
- 6:10other things that I this Sport and things that I used to do.
- 6:14I used to hang with people that drank because didn't make me
- 6:19look so bad. Then, Um, anyway, I have a
- 6:25child. That's got an addiction and she
- 6:29ended up trying to commit, suicide and ended up in a rehab
- 6:33and through that rehab. I found the meetings Book of
- 6:37Alcoholics Anonymous and, I don't know, I just put it in my
- 6:45bag. I picked it up for some reason
- 6:48and I we had a family get together for a cup week and the
- 6:55children all arrived. Oh I forgot to tell you the
- 6:59story about leaving home. I was sick and tired of being
- 7:03sick and tired and I left home and moved to the beach and and I
- 7:09was there for a good 12 months and Then the children would come
- 7:14and visit have a holiday at the beach.
- 7:20Yeah. Anyway, this particular weekend
- 7:22they came and they all arrive Friday, and Saturday, and it was
- 7:28a lot of laughter and merriment and all that.
- 7:30And anyway, I woke up Sunday night, and nobody was there.
- 7:38Federal gone home and I couldn't work out what had happened.
- 7:41It turned out that I drank so much that I blacked out and and
- 7:46they didn't like it so they all left that Monday following
- 7:51Monday? I found my first AA meeting And
- 7:57yeah, it was Advanced Dale and I walked in there and it was a
- 8:01room full of men and there were no other women there.
- 8:06But you know I was desperate. I was sick and tired of being
- 8:09sick and tired. I was so lonely.
- 8:11And you know, it's just just felt so alone.
- 8:16Yeah. So I went to my first meeting
- 8:20and they said, Vicki, you've got to do 90 meetings in 90 days.
- 8:26Wow, I lived on, you know I lived a bit isolated.
- 8:30I had that disease of isolation which you have when you have
- 8:35this disease of alcoholism and anyway, I did it.
- 8:40I had an old bomb car and I'd get up in the morning and I I'd
- 8:46find a meeting and I'd go might have to travel 100 case, but
- 8:51they said to me, you know, you go to any lengths.
- 8:53I went to any lengths to get a drink.
- 8:55I'll go to any lengths to get sober.
- 8:59I had the what we call the electric fleas.
- 9:03So is itchy all over and I couldn't sleep, I'd get home
- 9:07from a meeting at 10:00 at night and I couldn't sleep and I'd be
- 9:12walking around and I thought what am I going to do this?
- 9:15Drive me mad. So somebody suggested that I dig
- 9:19a hole and I thought I'll come people, the digging a hole but
- 9:22then I thought well I live on a block of sand of think I'll
- 9:26plant grass. So every time I went to a
- 9:28meeting Meeting. I would pull couch grass out of
- 9:31fences and off nature strips and weed your garden in the middle
- 9:35of the knife and take it. Fill up my boot with couch grass
- 9:39and I'd come home. And I had a bit of a Dibble
- 9:41stick and I put my head torch on and I would plant grass.
- 9:46Till the sun came up and then I fall asleep.
- 9:49Yeah. And that went on, for a good,
- 9:51six months, you know, it took me a long time.
- 9:55Long time to settle down. Will six months.
- 9:57Isn't that long really than you think I drank for over 20 years?
- 10:03Anyway, that grass has grown. Now that was ten years ago, that
- 10:08grass has grown and it's Lush and green and spongy and very
- 10:14healthy. And I look at it, I sit on my
- 10:18veranda and I look at it and I think that's my serenity grass.
- 10:23You know, there's a little patch over there that needs some
- 10:25attention. There's a bit of dead, you know,
- 10:28see if with us and coming through that needs a bit of
- 10:30fertilizer. You know, needs Some water so it
- 10:36reminds me of my sobriety, you know how I've recovered and
- 10:42yeah, there are patches. I still got to do meetings that
- 10:46I don't think that'll ever stopped and I don't want it to
- 10:50stop because these are my tribe. These are people that understand
- 10:53me today. They laugh at my suit, my
- 10:57stories of what I used to be so embarrassed about But yeah, to
- 11:03an alcoholic, it's quite normal. I'm a bit lost.
- 11:18Yes. Well, that's gave me the gift of
- 11:20thanks. Doing that.
- 11:22Gave me the gift of traveling. When I got into Alcoholics
- 11:27Anonymous, I was seven months sober and one of the other
- 11:30members said to me, there's a tag-along going to lightning
- 11:33Ridge and I saw, well, what's that?
- 11:37And they said you go, you get in a car and you drive to a big
- 11:41meeting, it's out in the bush. And I went, wow, that sounds.
- 11:45All right, fill in the time and it's in the middle of a, a so
- 11:49safe. And so I girlfriend and I we
- 11:53went off and we were only supposed to be gone for three
- 11:55and a half weeks and we were gone for three months.
- 11:57We've got all the way up to Darwin from and you know,
- 12:02couldn't believe where the time had gone and it was called a tag
- 12:06along and it's where a group of Alcoholics and their families.
- 12:10We can't belong the road. We do PI meetings at Little
- 12:14towns, we visit members solo members that are just the one
- 12:18person in one town and they wouldn't see another member for
- 12:21months and months on end. And we call him, and we have a
- 12:26campfire and meeting and a chat. It's a wonderful wonderful
- 12:33experience and on these Tagalongs, we We meet new
- 12:38people. We meet people from all over.
- 12:41Australia members that have heard about this new way of
- 12:47Being Sober. We're a happy joyous lat.
- 12:52Yeah, I didn't stop drinking to be miserable.
- 12:54I was miserable with the drink. I didn't have to, I didn't want
- 12:57to be miserable. Anyway, that was I've been on
- 13:02about 910 Tagalongs now, and I'm recording this on the side of
- 13:07the road, a bush camp, and we're on our way to Perth to the
- 13:13National Convention. It's a great life today, but it
- 13:19hasn't been easy. You know, I saw this step work
- 13:23to do this 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, and I have
- 13:28a sponsor Who I'm in regular contact with and we talk often
- 13:35and we do step work together. You know, she helps me through
- 13:39the big book and, yeah, we study it.
- 13:44I suppose, we study it. And then I have homework to do,
- 13:47you know, we have is a bit of writing to do, but a journaling
- 13:54and it's lovely to look back in my journals and see how I've
- 13:57changed. How my attitude has changed.
- 14:00Have gone from resentful and angry and depressed and blaming
- 14:04everybody to be happy, joyous and free.
- 14:09Where I know today that there's only three people but ever cause
- 14:12me a problem and that's me myself and I it was all to do
- 14:15with my attitude all to do with my attitude.
- 14:20Anyway, I am very, very yeah, I'm free.
- 14:26I have a new Freedom today, not an old life.
- 14:30Polished up, but a brand new life.
- 14:34Thank you very much. How did you go on, about the
- 14:36spiritual side of the program are to find that higher power.
- 14:40That was, that was God. I've had a higher power which I
- 14:46call God in my life. Well, ever since I was little to
- 14:51survive the way that I did. And when I came in to Alcoholics
- 14:56Anonymous, it was It's they showed me a way to connect with
- 15:04my higher power. So we do pray, I do prayer and
- 15:08meditation. Today, I have a conscious
- 15:11contact and a lot of my problems.
- 15:16I tried to sort out myself, it's called willfulness and but
- 15:20today, I can pass my will over to God and And it's all taken
- 15:27care of, you know, I don't have to be the conductor anymore.
- 15:32Life is so much easier when I'm not in control.
- 15:37Hmm. Okay, so I think I've run out of
- 15:44some fences. I've run out of words, do you
- 15:49think of a drink today? Do I have a think of a drink to
- 15:53death? No, I haven't thought of a drink
- 15:56today. I-it's been, I've been relieved
- 16:01of that compulsion and that need to have a drink because I Today,
- 16:07that that's, that's not going to cure my problems.
- 16:10You know, if I did pick up a drink, I know I'd be back where
- 16:14I was straight away. They say it's Progressive.
- 16:20Yeah. So, yeah.
- 16:27And that's right. You can I only have to do this
- 16:31for 24 hours a day and for eight or nine hours of those days?
- 16:35I'm sleep. So it is, it's a lot easier to
- 16:38do today because I'm not trying to live in tomorrow.
- 16:43And I forgiven myself for all my misdemeanors of yesterday, My
- 16:50bad behavior in my deceitfulness.
- 16:52My my yeah, the things that you used to do so that you could get
- 16:58a drink, the lies that I used to tell and say, you know, I didn't
- 17:02do it but I really did pinching money from my husband.
- 17:09Yeah. And pinching time to, you know,
- 17:12how much time did I Rob, because I was passed out, or, or out
- 17:18socializing and instead of being home and being a mum is
- 17:23sometimes, I would lie and say I was going to work, but I wasn't
- 17:26really, I was meeting up with people to drink and hiding it
- 17:33to. That was another thing I didn't
- 17:36have to hide it at first because nobody was about.
- 17:39But then after a while, because I was doing it 24/7.
- 17:43Yeah. You had to put it in places
- 17:44where people wouldn't find it, like, in the bottom of the
- 17:47Wardrobe and, and what do you do?
- 17:49With an empty flagon, you know, like I don't know, I I know five
- 17:55flag and spit in a milk crate and I used to stack them in the
- 17:58back of the shed. I've watched them.
- 18:01Make them all nice, take the label off.
- 18:04And when I stopped drinking, I had like, hundreds of flagons
- 18:10all shiny and you anyway, I gave them to of fellow that made wine
- 18:14and he was very happy. He was very happy to receive all
- 18:18this. This.
- 18:19Empty clean flagons. Yeah, amazing amazing.
- 18:26Very good, very good. Thank you very much.
- 18:28Thank you, ding.
