- 0:06Speaker 1: What's the season's underway? Every Tuesday night at six a
- 0:10Speaker 1: Yukon Football Coaches Show, We'll happen for you coach more
- 0:13Speaker 1: a couple of members of the team. Ukon Football Coaches Show.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Next is September third, six o'clock six to seven. Here
- 0:20Speaker 1: along the Yukon Sports Network, Varsity Network app on your
- 0:23Speaker 1: phones and I know everyone's on your phone all the
- 0:25Speaker 1: time in the Varseeed network dot com. Coach, let's go
- 0:28Speaker 1: to Gordon Samus. He's an offensive line coach, but he's
- 0:31Speaker 1: an offensive coordinator now and I love him as an
- 0:34Speaker 1: offensive line coach. You're seeing him as an OC now.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Talk about that offensive line. First of all, you lost
- 0:40Speaker 1: some key guys, but you've got a pretty solid group
- 0:44Speaker 1: and Gordy now running the run the show on the
- 0:47Speaker 1: offensive side of things. What have you seen from him?
- 0:49Speaker 1: And when you have conversations what kind of conversations.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Go on between you two. Well, he's very very very bright,
- 0:56Speaker 2: very bright.
- 0:57Speaker 1: He's a history guy, right.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, he's a he's smart. He's smart man. And uh,
- 1:04Speaker 3: he's very creative and he studies other people and he's
- 1:08Speaker 3: he's an academic type of guy, you know, which you
- 1:11Speaker 3: talk about an offensive line coach. I think people sometimes
- 1:13Speaker 3: have the wrong impression of what offensive line coaches are,
- 1:17Speaker 3: you know, the great sweatshirt and the whistle. That's not
- 1:19Speaker 3: what offensive line coaches are. That's a very complicated position
- 1:22Speaker 3: to coach, and it's obviously a very critical position to coach.
- 1:26Speaker 3: And this is a very very smart guy who understands
- 1:29Speaker 3: how to put players in a position to to do
- 1:32Speaker 3: what they do best. And he also understands how to
- 1:36Speaker 3: create conflict for a defense and uh, you know, that's
- 1:39Speaker 3: what his goal is to, you know, make the defense
- 1:42Speaker 3: defend as much field as possible on every play.
- 1:45Speaker 2: And he's done a really good job of it.
- 1:46Speaker 3: I mean, he's not some meathead offensive line coach, which
- 1:50Speaker 3: I don't think there are any. I mean, some of
- 1:51Speaker 3: the best coaches have ever been in my career. The
- 1:53Speaker 3: smartest guy's were offensive forty. You know, we've got to
- 1:58Speaker 3: returning tackles that are good players, and Val Sen and
- 2:02Speaker 3: Chase Lunn. We had to replace, you know, a great
- 2:07Speaker 3: offensive lineman who's probably gonna start in the NFL this year,
- 2:09Speaker 3: Christian Haynes, which was not easy. But Ben Morowski's been
- 2:13Speaker 3: in our system a couple of years. He's a monster.
- 2:15Speaker 3: He six seven, three hundred and forty pounds and he's
- 2:18Speaker 3: you know, he can dunk a basketball.
- 2:19Speaker 2: He's like when they.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Go play, they go play, you know, pickup games.
- 2:24Speaker 2: He's the point guard.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Wait, wait a minute, I'm just telling you really. Oh yeah,
- 2:29Speaker 3: he's got handles, so he can.
- 2:30Speaker 2: You can do it.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Bobby or Danny was over trying to get him to,
- 2:33Speaker 3: ya know, out of the facility.
- 2:36Speaker 2: No, I want him in the facility. Shoot.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Uh.
- 2:40Speaker 3: So I think we're going to be fine up there.
- 2:41Speaker 3: And we've got depth. You know, we haven't had a
- 2:43Speaker 3: lot of depth since I've been here. We may not
- 2:46Speaker 3: have just the you know, the Christian Haynes type, but
- 2:50Speaker 3: we have depth. I think one thing we're still searching
- 2:52Speaker 3: for is just kind of a an inspirational, tough leadership
- 2:58Speaker 3: type of guy like Christian Hans. Like nobody messed with
- 3:02Speaker 3: Christian you know, I wouldn't even I mean, he just was,
- 3:04Speaker 3: you know, he was just stoic type of guy. Just
- 3:07Speaker 3: a great, great human being, but you know, tough as
- 3:10Speaker 3: they get. So, uh, you know, I've seen Vow and
- 3:13Speaker 3: I've seen Chase step into that a little bit, but
- 3:15Speaker 3: that's still got to develop.
- 3:16Speaker 2: But it's a it's a good group.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Center is such an important position. What are you going
- 3:20Speaker 1: to do? Do you know what you're doing there yet?
- 3:21Speaker 1: I'm looking to depth chart. I'm guessing.
- 3:23Speaker 2: What's your guess?
- 3:26Speaker 1: I don't know?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Well, you got you said you're guessing, so you have
- 3:29Speaker 2: to have a guess. Well I go A or B.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I don't know. I know you know you got to
- 3:35Speaker 2: look at your depth chart. That's okay, I'll tell you.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Let me just Bob Joyce stole my note.
- 3:41Speaker 3: No, we went and got a transfer from Syracuse named
- 3:44Speaker 3: Wes holl And.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Yeah, he came from Syrahe came from Syracuse. Yeah, he's
- 3:48Speaker 2: a good player.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Really, I thought he wasn't a center. I thought he
- 3:51Speaker 3: was he is a center. Yeah, he's a center, and
- 3:53Speaker 3: he's doing a really nice job. He's smart. You know,
- 3:55Speaker 3: to be a center, you got to take charge and
- 3:57Speaker 3: you're in charge of all the protection calls and and
- 4:00Speaker 3: Wes has done a really good job.
- 4:01Speaker 2: And I'm excited to see him play for us.
- 4:04Speaker 1: And it reminds me of like bart Oates when I
- 4:06Speaker 1: covered the Giants way back when he was always smarter
- 4:09Speaker 1: than everybody.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Yeah, Bart played for my dad in the Philadelphia Stars
- 4:12Speaker 3: before he went to Bart was Bart was always smart.
- 4:16Speaker 3: The center has to be smart. I mean, you have
- 4:18Speaker 3: to recognize sayings, and you have to be able to
- 4:20Speaker 3: communicate to those other four guys around you and to
- 4:22Speaker 3: the quarterback like a center. He starts when we're, you know,
- 4:26Speaker 3: going to run the ball or throw the ball, which
- 4:27Speaker 3: I guess is only two things, that's right.
- 4:30Speaker 2: You know, he kind of starts the process defense.
- 4:35Speaker 1: You're not the DC anymore. So Matt Brock came from
- 4:38Speaker 1: Mississippi State and he started talking about three three five
- 4:41Speaker 1: and that means three down linemen. But you're gonna explain
- 4:44Speaker 1: it to our crowd here because I'm going to try
- 4:46Speaker 1: try to explain because you just said to me during
- 4:48Speaker 1: the course of braak, he said, I wasn't sure what
- 4:50Speaker 1: he was doing when he first came here, trying to explain.
- 4:54Speaker 1: And here's a guy who's coaching defense for decades.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Yeah, how did that happen? Well, it wasn't that.
- 4:59Speaker 3: I once got here and once I interviewed him, I
- 5:02Speaker 3: understood what he was trying to do. But I didn't
- 5:03Speaker 3: I didn't understand all the complexities of it. I think
- 5:06Speaker 3: going into the interview process, I was misinformed because I'd
- 5:09Speaker 3: never been exposed to this type of defense. It's just
- 5:12Speaker 3: you don't do it in the NFL, and we didn't
- 5:16Speaker 3: do it in the Pac twelve, and we didn't do
- 5:19Speaker 3: it at Yukon the first couple of years. But it's
- 5:21Speaker 3: a it's a really fun defense to play in number
- 5:24Speaker 3: one because it's very aggressive. I mean, it's we bring it.
- 5:29Speaker 3: You're playing with true three or three true down linemen,
- 5:33Speaker 3: bigger guys, and then you've got like kind of a
- 5:35Speaker 3: hybrid defensive end linebacker.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Who's that going to be?
- 5:39Speaker 3: That's guys like Langston Hardy and Donovan Branch and Aaron
- 5:43Speaker 3: Key and kaylin.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Ville in Aweva.
- 5:46Speaker 3: So these are guys that are you know, the six
- 5:48Speaker 3: three six ' four two hundred and fifty to two
- 5:51Speaker 3: hundred and fifty five kind of guys that can pass rush,
- 5:53Speaker 3: they can drop a little bit, that have athleticism, that
- 5:57Speaker 3: are smart, and they move all over the field. You know,
- 6:00Speaker 3: we're not like you. We don't have like a nose
- 6:02Speaker 3: guard all the time. And you know, so it's very multiple.
- 6:06Speaker 3: It's kind of like a talent equalizer because there's a
- 6:11Speaker 3: lot of movement up front and you can cause real
- 6:14Speaker 3: problems for offenses that don't see this very often, which
- 6:17Speaker 3: not a lot of teams play it. So teams don't
- 6:19Speaker 3: see it very often and it's hard to prepare for
- 6:21Speaker 3: in the three or four days you have between games.
- 6:23Speaker 3: So I'm excited about it. I know our players love
- 6:27Speaker 3: playing it. Matt Brock is about as intensive an individual
- 6:32Speaker 3: as I've ever been around. It's rubbing off on our
- 6:34Speaker 3: players and I say that is a compliment, and I
- 6:37Speaker 3: just feel like our defense is in good hands. And
- 6:41Speaker 3: he's a grinder now, you know, And that's what you've
- 6:43Speaker 3: got to be to be a good coach man.
- 6:45Speaker 1: You got price you hat's coming back and down with
- 6:47Speaker 1: Gordine and Johnny Stock.
- 6:48Speaker 3: A good, good group, good group up front and looking
- 6:51Speaker 3: forward to that data, some good pieces on.
- 6:53Speaker 1: We'll talk about playing defensive back in a second. It's
- 6:56Speaker 1: a quick break. This is the UK Football Coaches Show
- 6:59Speaker 1: Live iHeartMedia Headquarters in Hartford,
