Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Frank Grimes or Grimy is he liked to be cold,
- 0:06Speaker 1: taught us that a man can triumph over adversity, and
- 0:11Speaker 1: even though Frank's agonizing struggle through life was tragically cut short,
- 0:17Speaker 1: I am sure he's looking down.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Change the channel, Marge, four Finger Discounted.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Welcome to four Finger Discount, where this week we're gonna
- 0:49Speaker 3: be going all the way back to season eight to
- 0:51Speaker 3: review Homer's Enemy. I'm Dando and I am guy. Who
- 0:54Speaker 3: are we joined by? This Weeksterdavis?
- 0:55Speaker 4: We are joined by I want to say, the hardest
- 0:57Speaker 4: working man in comedy, but certainly the hardest man in
- 1:00Speaker 4: because one of the first things that comes up when
- 1:01Speaker 4: you google him is his Men's health cover and he
- 1:04Speaker 4: is looking to use the blood term. Absolutely fucking jack.
- 1:06Speaker 4: It makes me feel bad. I have not seen a
- 1:09Speaker 4: tour so I like that since I got out of
- 1:10Speaker 4: the shower this morning. It's Ed Cavally.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Yeah, absolute superstar in the Australian comedy scene. Like he said,
- 1:15Speaker 3: he's just He's everywhere.
- 1:16Speaker 4: He is everywhere, is everything everywhere all at once. He
- 1:19Speaker 4: is on TV, he is on podcasts, do you know what?
- 1:23Speaker 4: And other things as well.
- 1:24Speaker 5: Know what?
- 1:24Speaker 3: We love him the most because he's a die hard
- 1:26Speaker 3: Simpsons fan. That's why he came on the show this
- 1:27Speaker 3: week and he picked time his enemy, and boy was
- 1:29Speaker 3: at a fun chat.
- 1:30Speaker 4: It was a very very fun chat.
- 1:32Speaker 3: And I love how he's very much crusty. He ends
- 1:35Speaker 3: up with a great crusty joke. I won't spoil that.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Let's let's spoil it, we won't spoiled. Wait to the end,
- 1:39Speaker 3: way to the end. But like he basically talked to
- 1:42Speaker 3: stick around talking about a crusty gag, and when it ends,
- 1:43Speaker 3: it's just like, you know what.
- 1:44Speaker 4: He is crusty. He's got the soul of crust of
- 1:50Speaker 4: the Klowan and the body of ned Flanders.
- 1:51Speaker 3: But he has got so much shit going on as well.
- 1:53Speaker 3: But he gave up some time today to talk about
- 1:54Speaker 3: Homer's enemy, and boy are we better for it.
- 1:56Speaker 4: We are absolutely thrilled to present ed Cavally on four Thing.
- 2:00Speaker 3: We ranted about what YouTube and the way it's ruining
- 2:02Speaker 3: kids minds these days. Oh my god, he was shagging
- 2:05Speaker 3: his fist of a cloud and iously and I'm like
- 2:08Speaker 3: high five, but the same I thought I was the
- 2:11Speaker 3: only one whenever I tell my friends about YouTube is
- 2:13Speaker 3: ruining kids mind. I don't let him what YouTube like, Nah,
- 2:15Speaker 3: don't be such a fucking old man. I'm like, no, No,
- 2:17Speaker 3: it is though. It is because they get it on
- 2:20Speaker 3: YouTube and they're flicking and they're flicking and they're flicking anyway.
- 2:22Speaker 3: But you won't be flicking today though, because, as we said,
- 2:24Speaker 3: we're going to be talking about Homer's Enemy. A fantastic episode,
- 2:27Speaker 3: the Frank Grimey mcgrimes episode. We all love it. It's
- 2:29Speaker 3: an episode that you don't appreciate enough until you get older.
- 2:32Speaker 3: I think, is that right. I think that's correct, Yes, yes, yes, indeed.
- 2:35Speaker 3: All right, Well, guys, hope you enjoy today's chat with
- 2:37Speaker 3: Ed Cavalley reviewing Homer's Enemy. Will be right back at
- 2:40Speaker 3: the end of the episode. Hey, guys, welcome to four
- 2:48Speaker 3: Finger Discamp, the podcast that is apparently now brought to
- 2:50Speaker 3: you by you Insurance.
- 2:51Speaker 4: I'm Dan though and I am guy and we are
- 2:53Speaker 4: very very fortunate to be joined today by the star
- 2:56Speaker 4: of Going down Under Ed cavally.
- 2:58Speaker 6: Great to be here. Thank you. A full retrospective there.
- 3:04Speaker 5: Was originally called meat Pie out to my work selling
- 3:07Speaker 5: insurance and thank you all.
- 3:08Speaker 6: Now good to be here.
- 3:09Speaker 5: I'm big Simpson's Fan was started, of course, at their
- 3:13Speaker 5: six point thirty on the Sunday nights on Channel ten,
- 3:16Speaker 5: and then through the repeats at six pm. And then
- 3:18Speaker 5: of course a lot of people know I worked in
- 3:20Speaker 5: a thing that used to exist called a video store,
- 3:22Speaker 5: and we had all of the seasons on video, but
- 3:24Speaker 5: I didn't need them because I had already taped them
- 3:26Speaker 5: off the TV myself and I would watch them incessantly,
- 3:30Speaker 5: just over and over and over again. And now my son,
- 3:33Speaker 5: this only childre you have children and a son of
- 3:36Speaker 5: a similar age. I have a seven year old son
- 3:38Speaker 5: who has found it, Yes, I know who has found
- 3:40Speaker 5: it on Disney Plus and he is now starting he
- 3:43Speaker 5: started at the start, and we're watching them together.
- 3:46Speaker 3: How great is that?
- 3:47Speaker 4: Right?
- 3:47Speaker 3: When you see that? Unbelievable I'm watching it with Ali
- 3:49Speaker 3: and there's gags that I didn't get when I was
- 3:51Speaker 3: a kid, and agent now, yeah, it's so much. It's
- 3:53Speaker 3: almost like you watched the show brand new again.
- 3:55Speaker 6: It's just wonderful.
- 3:56Speaker 5: And to hear him the things that he laughs at
- 3:58Speaker 5: versus the things I versus exactly what happened and the
- 4:01Speaker 5: episode we're going to talk about today. Part of the
- 4:03Speaker 5: reason I chose it is because watching with him, watching
- 4:07Speaker 5: him watch bad episode. There was a joke in there
- 4:10Speaker 5: that I'll talk about that I didn't get until this viewing.
- 4:14Speaker 5: And I have seen this episode twenty times. I'm not twenty.
- 4:16Speaker 5: I've said it ten times over thirty years.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Oh yeah, more than that probably, Yeah, but it's a
- 4:20Speaker 3: fantastic I did the same thing. There was a gag
- 4:21Speaker 3: where I went, I don't remember ever hearing that, and
- 4:23Speaker 3: if I did, I didn't get it.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:26Speaker 5: That's the skill of the show. And it's also you know,
- 4:29Speaker 5: for us who will have young children, it's a it's
- 4:32Speaker 5: a weapon against YouTube humor because he's desperate to watch
- 4:37Speaker 5: what can only be described as fuck what's yelling?
- 4:40Speaker 6: On YouTube?
- 4:41Speaker 5: And I say to him, you know, he likes watching
- 4:43Speaker 5: sport highlights and they're on YouTube. Who will watch it
- 4:45Speaker 5: together and they'll bleed into you know, I tried a
- 4:49Speaker 5: hundred different you know baseballs and then just a series
- 4:53Speaker 5: of fuck what's yelling at each other? And I just know,
- 4:56Speaker 5: stop that and put on this because comedy education is
- 5:00Speaker 5: is why I'm sitting here right now, through the people
- 5:03Speaker 5: that I had in my life that got me to go, no,
- 5:06Speaker 5: you're not watching, you're not watching that, you're not watching
- 5:08Speaker 5: you know, Thailand's craziest bus crashes again, why don't you
- 5:13Speaker 5: watch the Simpsons? And why don't you try with now one,
- 5:15Speaker 5: et cetera, et cetera. So I don't know, it seems ridiculous,
- 5:18Speaker 5: but it's important to try and keep alive the idea
- 5:21Speaker 5: that comedy is no people actually come together, have an idea,
- 5:25Speaker 5: work hard on it, really hard, and.
- 5:28Speaker 6: Can be rewatched over and over again. That's important.
- 5:32Speaker 4: And this sounds very noble and very righteous. I agree
- 5:34Speaker 4: when with one hundred percent with everything you're saying. It
- 5:36Speaker 4: does sound like there's a bit of a Frank Grimes
- 5:38Speaker 4: leaching into your personality here.
- 5:40Speaker 5: But that's the other part that I've sort of you know,
- 5:42Speaker 5: the people who know me Limo, who is a wonderful
- 5:44Speaker 5: comedian and is the nicest guy in the known universe.
- 5:47Speaker 5: He's welcome everywhere he goes, everywhere he goes, everyone's just
- 5:49Speaker 5: happy to see him, and he's very much the homer
- 5:53Speaker 5: to my Frank Grimes. Where we'll have a discussion. We
- 5:56Speaker 5: do another podcast called You're Not Going to Like This,
- 5:58Speaker 5: where we get people, you know people and we try
- 6:00Speaker 5: and break their algorithms by trying to get them to
- 6:02Speaker 5: watch something that they would never normally watch and see
- 6:05Speaker 5: if they.
- 6:05Speaker 6: Can find some joy in it.
- 6:06Speaker 4: It's great.
- 6:07Speaker 5: And I'll often be ranting about something and I'll get
- 6:10Speaker 5: to the end of my rant and He'll just be
- 6:11Speaker 5: staring at me with a smile and go, so you've
- 6:13Speaker 5: never thought of that? And he'll say things like, no, ed,
- 6:15Speaker 5: I never stopped to consider whether justin Timberlake could afford
- 6:19Speaker 5: Air Jordan's when he said that in the Last Dance documentary.
- 6:22Speaker 5: I was just enjoying Michael Jordan. And that's the pedantry
- 6:27Speaker 5: of Frank Grimes, I think is a great descriptor of
- 6:31Speaker 5: the world that we live in. There's two types of pedantry.
- 6:34Speaker 5: There's the pedantry that you guys exude, which is pick
- 6:37Speaker 5: something you love and explore it and entertain it and
- 6:42Speaker 5: as celebrate it, which is wonderful. Or there's the other
- 6:44Speaker 5: type of pedantry, which is go online and just tear
- 6:49Speaker 5: things apart as much as you possibly.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Can, hate watching find as many knits as possible and
- 6:53Speaker 4: pick the hell out of them.
- 6:54Speaker 5: Yeah, you know what I mean. And entertainment has sort
- 6:56Speaker 5: of in a lot of ways, marvels perfect example, people
- 7:01Speaker 5: go on about Bubble and I don't like those films,
- 7:02Speaker 5: But the main reason I don't like them is they
- 7:06Speaker 5: seem to almost be designed to be announced at Comic Con,
- 7:10Speaker 5: discussed on thread on message boards, and then re announced
- 7:14Speaker 5: on Comic Con, where they either say, sorry, we got
- 7:16Speaker 5: that wrong.
- 7:17Speaker 6: Now he's something that you do like or yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 7:19Speaker 6: we meant that.
- 7:20Speaker 5: When you like that bit, we meant that, And here's
- 7:21Speaker 5: more of it. It's it's just a sad feedback loop,
- 7:24Speaker 5: which is definitely.
- 7:25Speaker 4: There's a there's a great line that's been sort of
- 7:27Speaker 4: repurposed by many a podcast, but it comes from a
- 7:29Speaker 4: channel called Red Letter Media where they were sort of
- 7:31Speaker 4: taken the mickey out of nerd podcasters and video guys
- 7:35Speaker 4: YouTube guys, where the guy was basically saying, don't ask questions,
- 7:38Speaker 4: just to consume product and then get excited for the
- 7:40Speaker 4: next product. It's like, and that's pretty much it when
- 7:43Speaker 4: it comes to Marvel and Star Wars and all these
- 7:45Speaker 4: franchises that seem to be filled with bandless imagination and
- 7:49Speaker 4: now just sort of coming attractions for the next thing.
- 7:52Speaker 5: Yeah, And you know what's good about it is as
- 7:53Speaker 5: usual the Simpson's got their first well comic book.
- 7:57Speaker 6: Comic book man, what are we talking.
- 8:00Speaker 5: Five years ago?
- 8:00Speaker 4: Now?
- 8:01Speaker 3: Ninety one ninety I didn't know what that was.
- 8:05Speaker 5: That's the other great thing about the Simpsons is how
- 8:08Speaker 5: many of their characters get better with time. How much
- 8:13Speaker 5: even though Monty Burn's is a great character at the start,
- 8:15Speaker 5: so based on Rockefeller and all those old school how
- 8:18Speaker 5: amazing is he as a couldn't care less about anyone
- 8:22Speaker 5: billionaire character? Now?
- 8:25Speaker 4: How good is it?
- 8:26Speaker 3: It's just something more relatable now than it was in
- 8:28Speaker 3: nineteen ninety one.
- 8:29Speaker 6: Incredible, It's incredible.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Do you think the Simpsons influenced your comedy in any
- 8:32Speaker 3: way or your sense of humor? Maybe in any way a.
- 8:36Speaker 5: Thousand percent, because it was designed that way. And as
- 8:40Speaker 5: you know, and you've had a few different guests on
- 8:41Speaker 5: that have said, this is it's shorthand. When someone says
- 8:45Speaker 5: the Simpsons reference and you get it, you're already you're
- 8:48Speaker 5: already one step closer to being friends and sympatico. It's
- 8:52Speaker 5: just it's such a shorthand way into a style of humor.
- 8:57Speaker 5: And as usual, you know, just the other day I
- 9:00Speaker 5: was with Working Dog, you know, the Tommy Gleisner and
- 9:03Speaker 5: Rob Sitch and Tom Tom being Tom Tom's on TikTok, right,
- 9:08Speaker 5: but you know he's just he's a voyeur on TikTok. No,
- 9:12Speaker 5: because I said, Tom, I said, yes, you know, I
- 9:14Speaker 5: know you like to watch reaction videos of rap, but
- 9:16Speaker 5: I what else do you like? And he goes, no, No, no,
- 9:20Speaker 5: typical Tom. He's like, no, there's actually a lot of
- 9:22Speaker 5: really good comedy writers on there that dissect jokes. And
- 9:25Speaker 5: because Tommy's his attention span is you know, as short
- 9:28Speaker 5: as it can possibly be, because he's got three books
- 9:30Speaker 5: to write. And so then we're standing there and what
- 9:36Speaker 5: Rob goes, oh, yeah, and Rob just pulls up on
- 9:38Speaker 5: his phone a short Simpsons clip, just one joke from
- 9:41Speaker 5: the Simpsons and we all laugh, one of the ones
- 9:44Speaker 5: where the Tom home is talking to the FBI, and
- 9:46Speaker 5: then we all laugh and then we just get on
- 9:48Speaker 5: with our day. And so it's still happening, and you go,
- 9:50Speaker 5: all right, if it's good enough for them, then it's
- 9:53Speaker 5: good enough for me.
- 9:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:54Speaker 3: So many people just share Simpsons clips there. Account is
- 9:57Speaker 3: sharing and they're like two hundred thousand followers.
- 9:59Speaker 5: And they should be because that's nothing but net. That
- 10:03Speaker 5: is nothing but net.
- 10:04Speaker 3: You know, yeah, exactly. So you're saying, so, why second
- 10:07Speaker 3: did you pick Home as Enemy? Is this an episode
- 10:09Speaker 3: that you enjoyed back when it first aired, or is
- 10:11Speaker 3: it this one you've come to appreciate over time.
- 10:13Speaker 5: So the first thing that tipped me off to it
- 10:15Speaker 5: to rewatch it was a few years ago when Chuck
- 10:17Speaker 5: close to him and brought out his book The Nineties.
- 10:19Speaker 5: Oh yeah, And there's a little sidebar and there. It's
- 10:21Speaker 5: an interesting book if people like to hear it, even
- 10:23Speaker 5: if you didn't live through the nineties. Is he talks
- 10:25Speaker 5: about Falling Down, the Michael Douglas film Falling Down, and
- 10:29Speaker 5: about how it's a sort of a small film but
- 10:32Speaker 5: what he calls an outweigh an outsized influence on culture,
- 10:36Speaker 5: and it had, you know, a food fighter's video. There
- 10:39Speaker 5: was a Metallica song I think I might have got
- 10:40Speaker 5: the band wrong and a Simpson's character and I was like,
- 10:42Speaker 5: oh yeah, Frank Grimes, Yeah he looks like Michael Douglas
- 10:45Speaker 5: from Falling Down.
- 10:47Speaker 6: I better rewatch that.
- 10:48Speaker 5: So I did, and when I rewatched it, you go, ah, right,
- 10:52Speaker 5: this is as pure a we know what we're doing,
- 10:56Speaker 5: we know what we're getting at, and let's try and
- 10:59Speaker 5: flip something fundamental in the show and see if we
- 11:03Speaker 5: can make it funny. Let's get someone who's the opposite
- 11:06Speaker 5: of Homer, who hates him for how easy he has things,
- 11:11Speaker 5: and what's that going to do for the rest of
- 11:13Speaker 5: the show. And that's why I love it, because it's
- 11:15Speaker 5: just it's just pure, it's pure.
- 11:17Speaker 4: I came up with this awfully wanky line when I
- 11:19Speaker 4: was rewatching it. There's a lot of talking about breaking
- 11:21Speaker 4: the fourth wall. Shows will break the fourth wall and
- 11:23Speaker 4: acknowledge you, and this is like breaking the fourth wall inwards. Yeah.
- 11:26Speaker 5: Yeah, it's like they know they also know at that
- 11:29Speaker 5: point the discourse around home and that the show switched
- 11:32Speaker 5: to be about him from Bart. They know that they
- 11:35Speaker 5: know that there is an inherent ridiculousness to the fact
- 11:37Speaker 5: that he has.
- 11:38Speaker 6: This giant house space.
- 11:40Speaker 5: Yeah, it's been in this space like they're commenting on
- 11:44Speaker 5: the idea of the storylines they've have to come up with.
- 11:46Speaker 5: And who would find that the most galling And it's exactly.
- 11:50Speaker 5: It's a guy who has never had a second who's
- 11:53Speaker 5: never had a break in life at all, and he
- 11:56Speaker 5: would shit you. He Frank Homer is like, in a
- 11:59Speaker 5: weird way, those Instagram like you know, lifestyle people where
- 12:03Speaker 5: they're just on jets and like hesok, it's that and
- 12:05Speaker 5: Frank and Frank Grimes is everybody else on the tram
- 12:08Speaker 5: going fuck it? How fuck do they have their foot?
- 12:10Speaker 5: You know that it's that they got that they're miles
- 12:14Speaker 5: ahead with that.
- 12:14Speaker 3: I don't have two hundred k do to invest in
- 12:16Speaker 3: ship mate.
- 12:16Speaker 6: That's what I mean. Yeah, I don't know what, I
- 12:18Speaker 6: don't know what your crypto coins called, but money to
- 12:20Speaker 6: give it?
- 12:21Speaker 4: Why am I a Lambeau guy?
- 12:23Speaker 5: That's what I'm saying. And it speaks to that, you know,
- 12:26Speaker 5: it's just out of reach or how did they get
- 12:28Speaker 5: that element of it? And also of course, as always,
- 12:31Speaker 5: it's just so funny. It's just so funny, like the callback,
- 12:35Speaker 5: you know, the dog at the.
- 12:36Speaker 4: Stime my.
- 12:38Speaker 5: Money burns once home because you know, once Frank Grimes
- 12:41Speaker 5: because he's seen an inspirational story of him on television,
- 12:43Speaker 5: and then once a dog who's done something inspirational the
- 12:46Speaker 5: next day. Second callback is then the dog's walking with
- 12:49Speaker 5: them in the hallway with the little.
- 12:50Speaker 6: Sash on his vice president.
- 12:53Speaker 5: And then when Frank Grimes gets in trouble, the dog's
- 12:55Speaker 5: barking at him. It's just he's just like, that is
- 12:58Speaker 5: just so clean.
- 13:00Speaker 6: Two three a.
- 13:01Speaker 3: Job that he didn't want in the first place.
- 13:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I told me to just one, two, three banks.
- 13:06Speaker 5: Just that's just sold. My son laughed at that. My
- 13:08Speaker 5: son was like, there's the dog and laugh and I
- 13:11Speaker 5: was like, all right, now we're getting somewhere. But with
- 13:13Speaker 5: the third one he really laughed at there's the dog. Yeah,
- 13:16Speaker 5: there's the dog.
- 13:17Speaker 4: All the threes, but it hits the ground running this
- 13:19Speaker 4: episode as well, because I mean, I'd forgotten that. It
- 13:21Speaker 4: opens with Ken Bruckman's news report, and before even before
- 13:26Speaker 4: you get to Ken's people, it's like, which is true,
- 13:28Speaker 4: means death to us all? And now I don't but
- 13:30Speaker 4: Can's people.
- 13:31Speaker 6: It's like, and that's such a Simpsons joke.
- 13:33Speaker 5: It really, that's a Simpson's joke for them to go,
- 13:36Speaker 5: all right, here's one on the way in, then some
- 13:38Speaker 5: story and there he's a feel on the way out.
- 13:40Speaker 5: That's such a Simpsons thing to do.
- 13:42Speaker 3: And one thing I've loved is just when they say
- 13:43Speaker 3: abandoned at the age of four by his parents, and
- 13:45Speaker 3: then they filmed themselves driving away.
- 13:47Speaker 4: I've never realized that they're filming it.
- 13:51Speaker 5: That is that that that's one of those ones where
- 13:54Speaker 5: you go, all right, we have to do it. Well,
- 13:57Speaker 5: they're all, we got how going to show this? What
- 14:00Speaker 5: do we got that'll do nicely?
- 14:02Speaker 6: You know?
- 14:03Speaker 4: And I think this is an episode that sort of
- 14:04Speaker 4: hits differently when you see the different ages as well.
- 14:07Speaker 4: I mean, I think when you've got a few more
- 14:09Speaker 4: miles on the meter, you know, you look at it
- 14:11Speaker 4: and you go, oh, you're either relating to Home or
- 14:14Speaker 4: you're relating to Grimy, depends on your your state of
- 14:16Speaker 4: mind at the time, your state of life, whatever. But yeah,
- 14:19Speaker 4: it's a very versatile episode.
- 14:21Speaker 3: I remember when I was a kid, I did not
- 14:23Speaker 3: like Grimes at all, and then when I rewatched it recently,
- 14:25Speaker 3: I was like, you know what, I'm actually more like
- 14:27Speaker 3: Frank Grimes.
- 14:27Speaker 6: Than I realized, except and therein lies the beauty of it.
- 14:30Speaker 6: And that's only because they've been going.
- 14:32Speaker 4: So long that and also he's been working with me.
- 14:35Speaker 6: Yeah, there you go. But it's designed that way. It's
- 14:37Speaker 6: designed for you to go.
- 14:38Speaker 5: And also the be story of bart owning a factory,
- 14:42Speaker 5: they only do it like three or four times because
- 14:43Speaker 5: they want to have a B story. But you go,
- 14:46Speaker 5: Holy Moly, Dawn going right at the death of American
- 14:51Speaker 5: the death of American as exceptionalism and manufacturing and the
- 14:56Speaker 5: idea that the types of jobs that Grimey Homer have
- 15:01Speaker 5: may not keep it, may.
- 15:02Speaker 6: Not still exist.
- 15:03Speaker 5: So there's a factory that you can own. It gone
- 15:06Speaker 5: and now you go, well that is now the case.
- 15:07Speaker 5: And then when they have just they need something to
- 15:09Speaker 5: go right, we need something to set Grimes off.
- 15:11Speaker 6: What are we going to do? What are we going
- 15:12Speaker 6: to do?
- 15:12Speaker 3: All right?
- 15:12Speaker 5: Home is going to win a contest for children to
- 15:17Speaker 5: design a better nuclear power plant, and of course, you know,
- 15:20Speaker 5: Martin comes up with the one.
- 15:21Speaker 4: That's actually powers.
- 15:23Speaker 5: Yeah, we're powering this room right now, get out. And
- 15:28Speaker 5: it's just I don't know as pound for pound as
- 15:31Speaker 5: an episode.
- 15:33Speaker 6: I think it's personally.
- 15:34Speaker 5: I mean, I love you know, if you say what's
- 15:36Speaker 5: your favorite episode that you ask people, it's like, yah,
- 15:37Speaker 5: I'll give you my top two hundred ye.
- 15:40Speaker 6: Down from there.
- 15:41Speaker 5: But just as a if you're trying to say to someone,
- 15:43Speaker 5: all right, why is this show good? It's this is
- 15:46Speaker 5: one where you go watch this that guy's dumb, that
- 15:49Speaker 5: guy works hard. It's like you said before, it's like ah,
- 15:52Speaker 5: there's something for everyone. Everyone's relating to something in this.
- 15:54Speaker 3: Do you think you can enjoy this one as much
- 15:56Speaker 3: if you're not a diehard Simpsons fan though?
- 15:58Speaker 6: Nah?
- 15:59Speaker 5: No, No, this one for us. This is one for us,
- 16:01Speaker 5: which is great because the thing I hate in the
- 16:03Speaker 5: Simpsons and this is you know, probably says more about me.
- 16:06Speaker 6: I hate the Heart.
- 16:07Speaker 5: I hate Heart, I hate I hate it.
- 16:11Speaker 6: It drives me up the wall.
- 16:12Speaker 5: It's the one remnant of their shows that they always reference,
- 16:15Speaker 5: the ball in the family and all of those things
- 16:17Speaker 5: where they feel as they have to do it. You
- 16:19Speaker 5: hear the music change, like, oh god, we know you
- 16:23Speaker 5: love each other, like we get it good. The only
- 16:26Speaker 5: good one is when Marge Princess Jasmine, I'm going to
- 16:30Speaker 5: the backseat of the car with my wife and I
- 16:32Speaker 5: went back for ten minutes.
- 16:34Speaker 3: That was the bowling instructor.
- 16:36Speaker 5: Yeah, and they're all cheering like that's the only bit wrong,
- 16:38Speaker 5: Like that's fantastic. Every other time when it's time for Heart,
- 16:41Speaker 5: like the episode I hate is the one that least
- 16:43Speaker 5: of the substitute.
- 16:45Speaker 6: That's just I hate that episode.
- 16:48Speaker 3: So I've never quite got the hype around that one.
- 16:51Speaker 3: I don't hate it about it's gone, it's whatever. I
- 16:53Speaker 3: do love to do it for her moment though, that
- 16:55Speaker 3: as a dad always gets me.
- 16:56Speaker 5: Oh yeah, that's yeah, all right, well that's that's which
- 16:59Speaker 5: is what they want.
- 16:59Speaker 3: My opinion change after I became a father, though, I think.
- 17:02Speaker 5: Yeah, and watching it with my son this time, and
- 17:05Speaker 5: I know we'll get to the one at the end.
- 17:07Speaker 5: I'm picking his favorite episode as one of my five.
- 17:10Speaker 5: And why he likes that episode is like, really, okay,
- 17:13Speaker 5: well fair enough, but it sort of makes you go
- 17:17Speaker 5: if you can get people across that first line of
- 17:20Speaker 5: don't tell them when the show started, just don't tell them, yeah,
- 17:23Speaker 5: and just let them pick up any episode they want,
- 17:26Speaker 5: as long as it's pasted about five or three possibly
- 17:29Speaker 5: they if they can't get it.
- 17:31Speaker 4: I don't.
- 17:32Speaker 6: I don't want to tell you because this is killing it.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Because a lot of my kids they are like they
- 17:36Speaker 3: like the new ones just I think just because it
- 17:37Speaker 3: visually looks better as well. They prefer that. They's like
- 17:40Speaker 3: watching it. And I say to my wife, I say,
- 17:43Speaker 3: me putting on an old Simpsons kind of like my
- 17:45Speaker 3: mum putting on like a Scooby Doo cartoon from the sixties,
- 17:47Speaker 3: you know.
- 17:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I know that it's such an air it's a
- 17:50Speaker 5: weird have that line, where does that line go? You
- 17:53Speaker 5: know the line that the world record line when they
- 17:55Speaker 5: show the swimming, it's like that the end of culture line,
- 17:57Speaker 5: So you go, where is culture ending? As a sort
- 17:59Speaker 5: of I can show this to someone and they won't go,
- 18:01Speaker 5: this look shit. And it's like when I was at
- 18:04Speaker 5: the video shop when I was trying to, you know,
- 18:05Speaker 5: take home. You know, the world's crazy as bikers, and
- 18:08Speaker 5: the two guys, Pete and Rob who ran this video stores,
- 18:11Speaker 5: they actually just took them out of my hand, like
- 18:13Speaker 5: watching that and I'm sixteen at this point. Okay, why hilarious?
- 18:16Speaker 5: That is this guy's going to fall for Cliff and
- 18:18Speaker 5: that guy is dead. But they took put those down.
- 18:21Speaker 5: Why you can have mony Python and now for something
- 18:23Speaker 5: completely different the thing, and you can have this, and
- 18:26Speaker 5: you can have Blackadder, and you can watch these that's
- 18:28Speaker 5: what you can watch. That's what you're allowed to watch,
- 18:30Speaker 5: and then you can come back and tell us why
- 18:32Speaker 5: you like it. And then spinal tap.
- 18:33Speaker 4: Pete and Robs are like fucking bosses.
- 18:35Speaker 5: Well yeah, they were as good as it gets and
- 18:38Speaker 5: that so that was so crucial it was so crucial
- 18:41Speaker 5: to just going, oh, I see, so there's a different
- 18:43Speaker 5: way of finding jokes that is sorry, but it's better.
- 18:48Speaker 5: And then the Simpsons comes along and they that's the
- 18:50Speaker 5: stuff they all like. I mean, they put the guy
- 18:52Speaker 5: from Spinal Tack in it for that reason, and you go, oh,
- 18:56Speaker 5: I'll get it, and then you're off and that's the hope.
- 18:59Speaker 4: This is something I've always said. There's a lot of
- 19:01Speaker 4: hype around, a lot of sort of negative around gatekeepers,
- 19:04Speaker 4: like oh god, we hate them. Yeah, the best gatekeepers
- 19:07Speaker 4: aren't keeping you out, they're ushering you in. They're bringing
- 19:10Speaker 4: me through the gates.
- 19:11Speaker 5: Yeah, and I mean this, you know, this show does that,
- 19:13Speaker 5: and there's still you know, there's still so much good
- 19:16Speaker 5: stuff that he's getting made and does get made. And
- 19:18Speaker 5: it can be short form of cameo, TikTok, I don't know.
- 19:20Speaker 5: But there's just there's a voice. This is what I
- 19:21Speaker 5: call the YouTube voice.
- 19:24Speaker 4: We were just talking about it.
- 19:26Speaker 3: I totally relate. You can rant as much as you
- 19:28Speaker 3: want about this. I'm totally in the same wavelength.
- 19:30Speaker 4: Are you talking about people whore saying like this?
- 19:32Speaker 6: And there's a guy I just do rewatching for this.
- 19:35Speaker 5: I went on YouTube because I wanted to see the
- 19:37Speaker 5: bit where he freaks out grinding again, just to see
- 19:39Speaker 5: that sequence. And there was one where it was like
- 19:41Speaker 5: a video of a reaction to this episode. Someone filmed
- 19:46Speaker 5: themselves reacting to it. This man was in his thirties. Fuck,
- 19:50Speaker 5: do I care hitting me? You've got to be kidding
- 19:55Speaker 5: me that you think that you okay, all right, You've
- 20:02Speaker 5: got to be joking, not adding anything, adding something you
- 20:05Speaker 5: are you are subtracting from all of our lives. Everyone
- 20:07Speaker 5: in everyone written in yellow What's what's a Simpsons font
- 20:11Speaker 5: called to name?
- 20:11Speaker 6: I can ever remember?
- 20:12Speaker 3: I've called Simpsons fon, Simpsons fot whatever.
- 20:14Speaker 5: Every single person written in that yellow Simpsons font has
- 20:18Speaker 5: contributed more to the world in this episode than you
- 20:22Speaker 5: will ever do for all of us.
- 20:24Speaker 3: And that there sit there judging it, not even and
- 20:28Speaker 3: just dumbley. This show is brought to you by the

- 20:52Speaker 3: slash four figure discount.
- 20:54Speaker 6: Yeah, there was one of the reasons.
- 20:55Speaker 5: The other reason I was picked this episode is I
- 20:57Speaker 5: was watching it so the joke that I'd never got.
- 20:59Speaker 5: So I'm sitting there with my son and they go
- 21:02Speaker 5: and to go to the bar to sort of tell
- 21:03Speaker 5: MO and that that he's this guy that hates him,
- 21:05Speaker 5: and yeah, they're all trying to sort of come to
- 21:06Speaker 5: terms with the idea that someone would hate Homer. And
- 21:09Speaker 5: then you go, oh, and then he reads out his
- 21:13Speaker 5: MO read out his enemy's list and his treamit a second,
- 21:17Speaker 5: that's Richard Nixon's enemies list, right, And I just didn't
- 21:22Speaker 5: I hadn't done enough Watergate or enough Nixon tapes time
- 21:26Speaker 5: until now to go holy shit, that is and it
- 21:30Speaker 5: is his list, and it's just a great joke. That's
- 21:35Speaker 5: Richard Nixon's enemies list, a president that has gone for
- 21:38Speaker 5: thirty something years when the episode's made, and I was like,
- 21:41Speaker 5: come on, people, that is quarterbly doing that is is fantastic.
- 21:45Speaker 4: But the centsens Riders were really out of heart on for.
- 21:47Speaker 6: Nixon, which is odd.
- 21:50Speaker 5: Just they should have been they would have been what
- 21:52Speaker 5: young when he left right young? Early seventies, Yeah, seventy
- 21:57Speaker 5: seventy three, when he flew away in marine too and
- 22:01Speaker 5: no one ever saw him again.
- 22:03Speaker 6: That's a great joke that I think. It's a Louis c.
- 22:05Speaker 4: K joke.
- 22:05Speaker 5: Who goes to the president just flew away one day.
- 22:09Speaker 6: Which is true, but yes, you're right.
- 22:11Speaker 5: And and remember he's got powerful enemies when is he
- 22:15Speaker 5: what it was in the universe.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Powerful the pig, the pig, powerful enemies.
- 22:24Speaker 5: Just that Paranoya seventy four, he leaves and just just
- 22:28Speaker 5: their their obsession with his paranoia is so funny.
- 22:31Speaker 3: So funny. They then moves on to Futurama as well.
- 22:35Speaker 6: I've never really watched Future Future.
- 22:36Speaker 3: Richard Nixon is like the main villain of Futurama essentially
- 22:39Speaker 3: becomes president of the world. Wow, you've never seen it.
- 22:42Speaker 3: Billy West does an incredible Richard Nixon.
- 22:44Speaker 6: I've seen some episodes of Yeah, I.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Just it's the genius of Swartsworld, whose name is on
- 22:51Speaker 4: this episode. Look, I'm sure there are contributions from the
- 22:53Speaker 4: Simpsons right in the room, but I mean it feels
- 22:55Speaker 4: very swartzworlder in terms of like this is as black
- 22:58Speaker 4: and grim as size that as it gets when it
- 23:01Speaker 4: comes to like American cultural or world culture or whatever.
- 23:03Speaker 5: So do we know if he'd seen falling down? Because yeah,
- 23:06Speaker 5: I'd love to know. Maybe you could ask that. I'm sorry,
- 23:10Speaker 5: I'm blanket his name with the dude who had.
- 23:11Speaker 6: The book, who's excellent Sigel. Yeah, maybe ask him and.
- 23:14Speaker 5: Go, hey, listen, do you know if he'd seen had
- 23:18Speaker 5: he seen falling down?
- 23:19Speaker 3: Because he looks like is his personality trait based on
- 23:21Speaker 3: the characters are just the design.
- 23:22Speaker 4: Of similar just very tightly wound, like why is the
- 23:26Speaker 4: world like this when I'm you know, when I'm bolding rules?
- 23:29Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, he attacks La by himself, as Chuck Plostman says,
- 23:32Speaker 5: But yeah, I'd be interested to know if he how
- 23:36Speaker 5: in the banks Wort's world I had this and thought, God,
- 23:39Speaker 5: this is the right guy. Or if he's watched that
- 23:41Speaker 5: and going, oh, you know what, that's interesting. What if
- 23:44Speaker 5: he hates Homer? He doesn't hate La, he hates Homer.
- 23:46Speaker 4: I think you were probably about to bring this up
- 23:47Speaker 4: because you know, but I was really stunned to discover
- 23:51Speaker 4: that one of the first people they were looking out
- 23:53Speaker 4: to do the voice of friend Grumbs with Nicholas Cage.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Oh, that doesn't surprise me at all, because this feels
- 23:57Speaker 3: like a guest role usually perfect.
- 23:59Speaker 6: It does.
- 24:00Speaker 5: So it is almost strange when you look it up
- 24:01Speaker 5: and you go, okay, one of them did it, and
- 24:02Speaker 5: he says he based it.
- 24:03Speaker 6: On It's Azaria, isn't it.
- 24:05Speaker 4: Yeah, he does.
- 24:05Speaker 3: William h Macy, Yeah.
- 24:07Speaker 6: Yeah, he goes.
- 24:07Speaker 5: He says, he goes for William h Macy. Where you go, No,
- 24:10Speaker 5: because h Macy is on the defensive. H Macy is
- 24:15Speaker 5: like in Fargo, et cetera, et cetera. What he's good
- 24:17Speaker 5: at exaid not the shame was but that was way later.
- 24:19Speaker 5: But at that point he's good at being he is
- 24:21Speaker 5: put upon.
- 24:22Speaker 4: He's not. He's defensive, yeah, but he's not aggressive like
- 24:26Speaker 4: in Falling Down Guy.
- 24:27Speaker 6: This guy's front foot.
- 24:28Speaker 5: So I was the Cage would have been amazing.
- 24:30Speaker 3: I do find it interest in that they decided not
- 24:32Speaker 3: to get a guest star because they wanted someone who's
- 24:34Speaker 3: on the cast, because they understood the history of Homer's
- 24:36Speaker 3: character as well, so they could emote correctly towards why
- 24:39Speaker 3: you would be so frustrated.
- 24:41Speaker 5: That is actually a very good point, and as usual
- 24:43Speaker 5: if they're right, because the key scene is when he
- 24:46Speaker 5: comes to his house, yep, and you live in this palace,
- 24:49Speaker 5: my night job at the foundry. I live in an
- 24:51Speaker 5: apartment above a bowling which is underneath another.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Bow and Home's like wow, he wants that.
- 24:58Speaker 6: That's the key.
- 24:58Speaker 5: The key is that Homer is impressed by Grimey and
- 25:02Speaker 5: thrilled by him right to the end. He's either indifferent.
- 25:06Speaker 5: The only bit where he goes where he comes out
- 25:07Speaker 5: and he looks in and he goes because I am
- 25:08Speaker 5: Hermie Simpson, and which he does. And but that's such
- 25:15Speaker 5: a clever it's such a clever way of keeping Homer
- 25:19Speaker 5: in the episode because if Homer Cotton's on early and
- 25:22Speaker 5: sort of they become adversaries like saying like mister plow
- 25:25Speaker 5: or something, No, we've got nothing to do, grime He's
- 25:28Speaker 5: got nowhere to go.
- 25:29Speaker 4: They sort of stack the deck in favor of Homer
- 25:32Speaker 4: in some ways by making him afraid, not afraid, but like,
- 25:36Speaker 4: oh he doesn't like me.
- 25:37Speaker 3: Wait a minute, I want this before. He's never had
- 25:41Speaker 3: an enemy, he's never had anyone go out of their
- 25:43Speaker 3: way to dislike him. No, yeah, And I mean I
- 25:45Speaker 3: think everyone can sort of relate to that. I mean,
- 25:47Speaker 3: what's that great John Mulaney line, who's like, I want
- 25:50Speaker 3: everyone to like me. Is like my wife says, you're
- 25:52Speaker 3: like the mayor of nothing.
- 25:55Speaker 6: Yeah, which is which is Yeah, it's a good it's
- 25:58Speaker 6: a good point.
- 25:58Speaker 5: But he Homer has like all the things that he
- 26:03Speaker 5: stacked up when I was on tour with the Smashing
- 26:04Speaker 5: Pumpkins and when he met Gerald Ford, et cetera. And
- 26:08Speaker 5: I've been to space you've never been. It's just it's
- 26:12Speaker 5: it's a great reminder too. You go, yeah, that's right,
- 26:15Speaker 5: there was that episode. That episode was good too. They're
- 26:17Speaker 5: doing a clip show without having to do a clip show.
- 26:19Speaker 4: That's true.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Yeah, just adding some context to the back issue of the.
- 26:22Speaker 5: Show, which I don't know, which they don't love to do.
- 26:24Speaker 3: They don't know, they don't.
- 26:26Speaker 5: They try and make sure that you've got memory wipe
- 26:28Speaker 5: at the end of every episode statusquo. Yes, I then
- 26:30Speaker 5: to go on this happened. You go, oh, that's good.
- 26:32Speaker 5: That's interesting. That really helps.
- 26:34Speaker 3: It's definitely suited this story for sure. Yeah. I also
- 26:36Speaker 3: think this episode will sort of used just to point
- 26:37Speaker 3: out the absurdity, like you said, because we always in
- 26:39Speaker 3: the Simpsons adds. I think what appealed to it in
- 26:41Speaker 3: the beginning was it was very relatable, but by this
- 26:43Speaker 3: point it was kind of anything but relatable. The characters
- 26:46Speaker 3: were relatable, but what was going on really wasn't.
- 26:49Speaker 5: Yeah, and I'd love to know, you know, there's that
- 26:52Speaker 5: great they'll do like the Chew to Dine Dynasty or whatever,
- 26:55Speaker 5: and they'll show you, like, you know this person in
- 26:57Speaker 5: rain till here and they just have lines such and
- 26:59Speaker 5: such rain here and then Henry. Yeah, they to go
- 27:01Speaker 5: over and then Elizabeth, Like, they'll do that. What I'd
- 27:04Speaker 5: love to see is a writer's one for the Simpsons,
- 27:06Speaker 5: because you go, what's the lifespan of a Simpsons writer
- 27:10Speaker 5: to get to the end where you go, do you
- 27:11Speaker 5: know what? I just I don't know what else? What
- 27:14Speaker 5: else have I got here? Because they used to do?
- 27:16Speaker 4: You know?
- 27:16Speaker 5: They talk about that in Seinfeld where they are they're
- 27:19Speaker 5: just after.
- 27:20Speaker 4: A while the tank's empty.
- 27:21Speaker 6: Yeah, we don't, we can't. It's too intense.
- 27:24Speaker 3: It could be that you come up with an idea
- 27:25Speaker 3: and then you realize you've already done it.
- 27:27Speaker 6: How much must that happen on the Simpsons.
- 27:29Speaker 5: Oh now, of course, can you imagine, like the most
- 27:32Speaker 5: more recent ones, they're still funny. I just don't get
- 27:34Speaker 5: I find it strange. No, they're not as good to go, Yeah,
- 27:36Speaker 5: but they are.
- 27:38Speaker 6: You just don't. You can't.
- 27:40Speaker 5: It's still because you're also in nostalgia.
- 27:42Speaker 3: Nostalgia plays a big role.
- 27:43Speaker 5: Yeah, you're a different person when you watch those first
- 27:45Speaker 5: ones like these. This is a funny episodes my son's
- 27:48Speaker 5: watching sort of set more recent seasons. They're funny. They're
- 27:51Speaker 5: just funny. They're still funny, and that is impossible. Thirty
- 27:54Speaker 5: something years in, I.
- 27:55Speaker 3: Think there was a period where and they call it
- 27:57Speaker 3: jerkass Home and we're in season twenty one now, the
- 27:59Speaker 3: show on it from cologeal Order, and the character of
- 28:02Speaker 3: Home is just so dumb down. He's not howd a
- 28:03Speaker 3: cannibal for any of his bullshit anymore.
- 28:06Speaker 6: I've heard you say that when he's that what's what?
- 28:08Speaker 3: As some of those episodes, there is an episode that
- 28:10Speaker 3: I always bring up called Codependence Day, where Marge and
- 28:13Speaker 3: Homer are driving home from a party and Home has
- 28:15Speaker 3: been drinking much as I'll drive, and he goes, no,
- 28:17Speaker 3: I'm fine, So he drink drives, crashes the car, bails
- 28:19Speaker 3: out of the car, puts her in the driver's seat,
- 28:21Speaker 3: and he has her copped the reactive the result of it,
- 28:24Speaker 3: and then doesn't be how to accountable for it. She
- 28:26Speaker 3: apologizes at the end for being so mean to him.
- 28:28Speaker 3: That's an episode that's like the apex.
- 28:31Speaker 4: Of jerk out somewhere. But they had been had been
- 28:32Speaker 4: leading up to that, with just he was being dumbed
- 28:35Speaker 4: down more and more, it seemed, and Ye had no
- 28:37Speaker 4: accountability for his actions in this regard. I mean, he's
- 28:40Speaker 4: dumbed down in this, but there's a degree of accountability
- 28:43Speaker 4: by way of Frank Grime sort of calling him out
- 28:46Speaker 4: for this, and by extension calling us out, like you're
- 28:49Speaker 4: really tolerating this, aren't you, guys? Is that this is
- 28:51Speaker 4: what you want? You're really into this.
- 28:53Speaker 3: But putting your wife behind the wheel of a car
- 28:55Speaker 3: you smashed your drink driving, that's what Homer became.
- 28:59Speaker 6: I've seen that.
- 29:00Speaker 5: This is one of those ones where I'll start I'll
- 29:01Speaker 5: go I haven't seen him, and I'll start watching like, ah, yeah,
- 29:03Speaker 5: I got.
- 29:04Speaker 6: Oh so okay.
- 29:05Speaker 5: And then Lisa confronts a famous movie director about the
- 29:07Speaker 5: drop and quality his films have taken.
- 29:10Speaker 3: Oh was that George Lucas?
- 29:11Speaker 6: One is that it must be, because yeah.
- 29:13Speaker 4: That's right. They give him another name. They don't call
- 29:15Speaker 4: them Lucas, but it's essentially Lucas.
- 29:16Speaker 3: They have they make him a little person and everything.
- 29:19Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that was shit.
- 29:20Speaker 5: Oh so that's two thousand and four. So what's happening
- 29:23Speaker 5: in Star Wars at two thousand and four?
- 29:25Speaker 3: We've got the last that's in between Mane of the
- 29:27Speaker 3: Sith comes out the following year.
- 29:29Speaker 4: That's in between Attack of the Clones and Seth.
- 29:31Speaker 5: All right, so we're riding that midst the mire of
- 29:34Speaker 5: what has he done? You're right in the midst of
- 29:36Speaker 5: what has he done? And Okay, this is an interesting
- 29:40Speaker 5: I'm going to have to rewatch this one because that
- 29:42Speaker 5: does read extremely like often think about the the actors,
- 29:45Speaker 5: like you know, howr you shere is very forthright in
- 29:49Speaker 5: talking about you know. I remember him saying I was
- 29:51Speaker 5: walking through an airport in Argentina or somewhere in South
- 29:54Speaker 5: America and I heard my own voice and thought, I'm
- 29:56Speaker 5: not being paid for that. And he's great like that,
- 29:58Speaker 5: to go, hang on, this is our likeness.
- 30:00Speaker 6: Our image.
- 30:01Speaker 5: I wonder what they do when they pick up a
- 30:03Speaker 5: script like that. I wonder if any of them said, geez, guys,
- 30:05Speaker 5: what are we doing?
- 30:06Speaker 3: Harry said. We interviewed him many years ago, Harry and
- 30:08Speaker 3: Harry said there was a moment where, in better terms,
- 30:12Speaker 3: basically said I stopped caring. Was when he said Flanders.
- 30:14Speaker 3: He said Flanders wouldn't say this, and they said it
- 30:16Speaker 3: doesn't matter, and he goes, I realized I was writing
- 30:18Speaker 3: jokes and assigning it to characters as opposed to getting
- 30:20Speaker 3: a character and writting a joke for them.
- 30:22Speaker 7: Oh that is very interesting, okay, because there's a what
- 30:29Speaker 7: I heard an interview with one of the producers once
- 30:32Speaker 7: and he said something very interesting.
- 30:34Speaker 5: One of those guys that start, you know, those really
- 30:36Speaker 5: rich guys. There's the guys at the start, really rich
- 30:39Speaker 5: dude to the end of somewhere rich, the.
- 30:41Speaker 6: Guys that started really rich.
- 30:42Speaker 5: And one of them said he was very into animal
- 30:46Speaker 5: welfare and whatever. Yeah, have you heard him talk about
- 30:49Speaker 5: this where he goes his wife kind said to him, oh, hey,
- 30:52Speaker 5: what are you doing You pay for like some giant
- 30:54Speaker 5: horse thing somewhere You've spent all our money And he goes.
- 30:59Speaker 6: What day is it? She goes Wednesday. There's no what days?
- 31:03Speaker 3: Is it.
- 31:04Speaker 6: The eighth? There's eighth?
- 31:07Speaker 5: Okay, yeah, Simpsons check arrives on the fourteenth, so we'll
- 31:11Speaker 5: be rich again.
- 31:12Speaker 4: There.
- 31:16Speaker 5: It's a great it's a great line, and it's a
- 31:18Speaker 5: great story, and even if it's half through, it's wonderful.
- 31:21Speaker 6: It's stuck with me that line.
- 31:23Speaker 4: Also, that wife turned out to be Jennifer Tilly, so
- 31:25Speaker 4: I think Sam Sung was doing right for himself for Tilly.
- 31:27Speaker 5: Yeah, that's interesting.
- 31:29Speaker 6: Okay, we're all learning something.
- 31:32Speaker 3: I'm learned a little something to this episode here though,
- 31:34Speaker 3: as we're saying, very divisive. I love going back through
- 31:37Speaker 3: the forums from the nineties when season seven eight of
- 31:40Speaker 3: The Simpsons was on and everyone's saying, the show's no
- 31:42Speaker 3: good anymore, they need to cancel it. What happened to
- 31:44Speaker 3: add beloved show? This is season seven eight of The Simpsons.
- 31:47Speaker 5: Right, Well, there's everything you need to know. Yeah, there
- 31:51Speaker 5: is everything you need to know. It's like going back
- 31:53Speaker 5: and reading reviews of Shakespeare from people who you know,
- 31:56Speaker 5: from local local wags that saw it, and she's and
- 32:00Speaker 5: said that, you know, she's king lib bang Gon for
- 32:02Speaker 5: a while, so you know, it's that it's there is
- 32:05Speaker 5: no value in review.
- 32:07Speaker 6: I'm doing this thing.
- 32:08Speaker 5: SBS is doing a really smart thing at the moment
- 32:10Speaker 5: where they're replaying old David and Margaret movie show episodes,
- 32:17Speaker 5: and the really strong impression you get is this was
- 32:21Speaker 5: a complete waste of time.
- 32:24Speaker 6: He hated the.
- 32:24Speaker 4: Castle, hated Romba Stomper, God.
- 32:27Speaker 6: Rest his soul.
- 32:27Speaker 5: He's since he sort of walked it back over the
- 32:29Speaker 5: journey and you don't have to love the cars. Well
- 32:31Speaker 5: that's fine, whatever, but it's just the other day, it's
- 32:36Speaker 5: just like, oh my goodness, you're right. Review and criticism
- 32:40Speaker 5: in that well you're not trying to push the ball
- 32:42Speaker 5: forward in any way, is a complete waste of time.
- 32:45Speaker 5: And that must be like those forum people, what was
- 32:49Speaker 5: their best case scenario? Like what's a home run? If
- 32:53Speaker 5: you're a forum what was good at that time? Also
- 32:56Speaker 5: like what's a home run for a forum commenter? Yea,
- 32:59Speaker 5: what is a home run?
- 33:00Speaker 4: It used to be running first, like you were the
- 33:03Speaker 4: first comment?
- 33:04Speaker 5: Is the thing you go first? So if you were first,
- 33:06Speaker 5: so you thought of something first.
- 33:08Speaker 4: I was just saying the word further comment.
- 33:11Speaker 6: Just saying first, saying anything.
- 33:14Speaker 4: Real Algonquin Roundtable in the forums that's excellent.
- 33:17Speaker 6: That's excellent.
- 33:18Speaker 3: Still you still see this ship on YouTube. We put
- 33:20Speaker 3: a video up and this is like, first, I'm like cool,
- 33:23Speaker 3: thanks all contribution. By the way, as someone who used
- 33:25Speaker 3: to make a living as a as a film critic,
- 33:27Speaker 3: my mighty heart is breaking.
- 33:28Speaker 4: I'll be in the humpy.
- 33:30Speaker 5: Well well then then let me ask you, then, what
- 33:33Speaker 5: do you think because I've got a rule. I've had
- 33:35Speaker 5: a rule that I've tried to that I think should
- 33:36Speaker 5: be enforced. You shouldn't be allowed to write to review
- 33:40Speaker 5: a film until you've made on.
- 33:41Speaker 4: Does this count sex tapes?
- 33:44Speaker 6: Of course?
- 33:44Speaker 3: That's what I mean.
- 33:46Speaker 5: I did an art history degree at UNI, right, and
- 33:49Speaker 5: it was at Sydney University and it was a three
- 33:51Speaker 5: year degree and I got it just under six years.
- 33:53Speaker 6: So I came in under the.
- 33:53Speaker 5: Wire and I that was just an excuse to be there,
- 33:58Speaker 5: to go and meet people and do comedy, et cetera,
- 34:00Speaker 5: which it's sort of turned into.
- 34:01Speaker 6: But you know, I'm good in the gallery.
- 34:04Speaker 5: With my wife and I went and saw the Impressionist
- 34:06Speaker 5: the other day and I'm like, yeah, I'm pretty good
- 34:08Speaker 5: in this gallery and I was.
- 34:09Speaker 6: But you realize, you go, what just what? So what.
- 34:14Speaker 5: So my question to you, as someone who made a
- 34:16Speaker 5: living reviewing films, which watch which outlets?
- 34:21Speaker 4: I was with the paper down here, the Advertiser, but
- 34:23Speaker 4: also did a TV guide that was syndicated around the country.
- 34:27Speaker 4: If you're on the.
- 34:27Speaker 5: Cases as well, said the Advertiser. Right, So let's say
- 34:30Speaker 5: that you're a reviewer for The Guardian today. You know,
- 34:34Speaker 5: before you start watching something, what.
- 34:36Speaker 4: You have to give it that scans you have to like.
- 34:40Speaker 5: There are certain things that have to get five starts,
- 34:43Speaker 5: and there are certain things that, if the Guardian is
- 34:45Speaker 5: to maintain itself, have to get one. So in the Advertiser,
- 34:51Speaker 5: how did you sift the like, how did you sift? Like,
- 34:57Speaker 5: all right, what are we doing here? It's like because
- 34:59Speaker 5: you have some who likes things, So how did you
- 35:01Speaker 5: sift which things were going to be cannon for Advertiser
- 35:05Speaker 5: readers and viewers.
- 35:07Speaker 4: I like to think they actually gave me a fair
- 35:09Speaker 4: bit of leeway in that regard. I mean I didn't
- 35:11Speaker 4: really get the word from up top. It's like, okay,
- 35:13Speaker 4: a new Australian movie or say new twentieth century Fox
- 35:17Speaker 4: product given of the Advertiser. I was never sort of
- 35:20Speaker 4: given a directive in that sense.
- 35:23Speaker 5: I mean, you would have had a sense in your mind,
- 35:25Speaker 5: so you're not going to go and watch you know,
- 35:27Speaker 5: give me some years, Give me some years that.
- 35:29Speaker 6: That you did it.
- 35:29Speaker 4: I was from mid nineties to mid twenty ten.
- 35:32Speaker 5: Which is amazing time because there were so many good films. Absolutely,
- 35:36Speaker 5: let's say you went and saw Adaptation, so I know
- 35:39Speaker 5: that if I'm on Triple J I've got to give
- 35:41Speaker 5: it five stars and pretend I know something. Right, what's
- 35:45Speaker 5: the what are you doing? Okay, right, I talk to
- 35:46Speaker 5: you about Adaptation? Fun?
- 35:47Speaker 6: What am I going to do here?
- 35:51Speaker 4: It's a weird thing because I mean I sort of
- 35:52Speaker 4: recognized I'm doing. I'm not really doing in depth film
- 35:56Speaker 4: criticism here. I'm not going here to cinema or something
- 35:58Speaker 4: like that. I'm basically doing consumer about what you're going
- 36:00Speaker 4: to watch on a Saturday night, you know.
- 36:02Speaker 6: Which is great. That's a great service. That's different.
- 36:04Speaker 5: That is a different service because that is the sift,
- 36:07Speaker 5: and we need people who help more than anything. Now,
- 36:09Speaker 5: the sift. That's a different service. That's a great service.
- 36:12Speaker 4: Yeah. But by the time anotation came out, which is
- 36:14Speaker 4: like two thousand and two or whatever, I like to
- 36:16Speaker 4: think the people who were reading my stuff. Realize, Okay,
- 36:20Speaker 4: guy likes this. I can trust him on this. I
- 36:21Speaker 4: mean I had friends who were saying, I like reading
- 36:23Speaker 4: the reviews because I know what not to watch, because
- 36:25Speaker 4: your taste and mine are completely similar.
- 36:28Speaker 6: Which is that is good?
- 36:30Speaker 5: That is that is a worthwhile exercise in the sift
- 36:35Speaker 5: what I call the sift, you know, versus just this
- 36:39Speaker 5: is shit or this isn't or knowing, like knowing the
- 36:43Speaker 5: bias of the thing before you go into it.
- 36:46Speaker 4: Yeah, but the thing of it is, Yeah, you don't
- 36:47Speaker 4: want to be sort of you don't want to be
- 36:49Speaker 4: a snob, but you don't want to be sort of
- 36:50Speaker 4: down talking either. You don't want to be saying well,
- 36:53Speaker 4: folks go and enjoy Independence Day. I guess yeah, I know.
- 36:56Speaker 6: See that's the thing that's key.
- 36:57Speaker 5: Like what about like something like armageddon or you know,
- 37:01Speaker 5: do you know where that rubber hits the road with this?
- 37:02Speaker 6: Connie, I was.
- 37:04Speaker 3: A kid in Conne. I loved Conye but the best Yeah, yeah,
- 37:08Speaker 3: it was great. Yeah, I mean it's it's it knows
- 37:10Speaker 3: because it knows exactly what it's trying to be.
- 37:12Speaker 4: Yeah, that's exactly right. It's coherent and it's a little
- 37:16Speaker 4: bit smarter than it needs to be, but it also
- 37:18Speaker 4: just hits you in the pleasure center because that's its job.
- 37:20Speaker 6: Yeah, exactly right.
- 37:21Speaker 4: We're gonna throw Dave Chappelle out of a plane. Sorry
- 37:24Speaker 4: spoiler for conne folks, but you know, and Nicolas Cage
- 37:26Speaker 4: is going to speak in this weird drawl and Malcovich
- 37:29Speaker 4: is going to chew the scenery. But at the same time,
- 37:31Speaker 4: you know, you've got that line where they're introducing ving
- 37:33Speaker 4: Range's character and is like, yeah, he wrote his revolutionary
- 37:36Speaker 4: manifesto in jail. They're looking at Denzel for the lead.
- 37:38Speaker 4: It's like, that's great fucking funny and that's smart, and
- 37:42Speaker 4: you know that's smuggling the dog medicine and the peanut
- 37:45Speaker 4: butter is what I'm doing.
- 37:46Speaker 6: So ye, it's getting back to the cenisons.
- 37:48Speaker 5: We're better get back to the point being that no
- 37:51Speaker 5: one does it better than they do, and that's what
- 37:52Speaker 5: this episode is. That's why I bring it up, because
- 37:55Speaker 5: no one does it better than they do over a
- 37:56Speaker 5: long period of time, and that's why I was interested.
- 37:58Speaker 5: When you're talking about Home or sounds like, I wonder
- 38:00Speaker 5: if what Harry Shira said there is very instructive because
- 38:04Speaker 5: that makes you go, all right, that attitude times ten people,
- 38:09Speaker 5: and you can lose the idea of the sort of
- 38:12Speaker 5: gauge of what Home is up to.
- 38:14Speaker 6: That's how it could happen.
- 38:15Speaker 3: Yeah, because so many times recently haven't we said that's
- 38:17Speaker 3: a funny line. Doesn't really suit that character though, but
- 38:20Speaker 3: it's just yeah, and it feels like recently we say
- 38:22Speaker 3: recently season twenty one they picked that. It's like the
- 38:24Speaker 3: writers whom have their favorites for the season. So sidehame
- 38:26Speaker 3: Mail in like season nineteen twenty appeared in like every
- 38:29Speaker 3: single episode with a big monologue. This guy picked like
- 38:32Speaker 3: ten episodes in the Golden Ear and now is in
- 38:34Speaker 3: every episode.
- 38:35Speaker 6: Well, his best joke.
- 38:36Speaker 5: Is when bart is I think he's the one where
- 38:41Speaker 5: he's the preacher and he's dancing down the aisle and
- 38:45Speaker 5: faith off, yeah, faith off, and Si Joe Male stands
- 38:49Speaker 5: up and says he's kicking at the old school like that.
- 38:52Speaker 5: That's that's the side Joe Mail's joke is to be
- 38:55Speaker 5: contemporary in a Shakespearean and the.
- 38:57Speaker 3: Stuff he was yeah, yeah, but when he's doing it
- 38:59Speaker 3: every episode, yeah, it was bizarre.
- 39:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 39:03Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, one thing I do love about Simpsons D
- 39:05Speaker 3: again is that I feel like they introduced me to
- 39:07Speaker 3: so many key elements of pop culture about me even
- 39:09Speaker 3: realizing it. There are so many moments where you' watching
- 39:11Speaker 3: it going as a kid, I don't know what's happening here,
- 39:14Speaker 3: but this has to be something.
- 39:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 39:17Speaker 5: And I've heard a few people on your guests on
- 39:19Speaker 5: your show say, and you know, even yourselves that when
- 39:22Speaker 5: you watched it initially, if you watched it with someone
- 39:24Speaker 5: older and something they laughed at that you didn't understand.
- 39:28Speaker 5: And my son, one of the things I love with
- 39:31Speaker 5: my son is I made a stupid rod for my
- 39:33Speaker 5: own back back was when he was started to talk
- 39:37Speaker 5: and asked I said to myself, I will never say
- 39:39Speaker 5: I don't know to him. If he asked me something,
- 39:41Speaker 5: I will never say I don't know. So I'll say
- 39:43Speaker 5: I'll either know it or I'll say all right, and
- 39:45Speaker 5: then we'll work it out. Because I've got the whole world.
- 39:46Speaker 5: I've got everything that's ever been known ever in my pocket.
- 39:49Speaker 5: I have no right to say to him I don't know,
- 39:52Speaker 5: because that's just laziness to not look into the machine
- 39:55Speaker 5: that knows everything ever and tell him.
- 39:57Speaker 4: Yeah, but did you forget about the bandless curiosity be young.
- 40:01Speaker 5: That's the issue.
- 40:03Speaker 6: I'm like, I'm like a fucking town librarian. I am
- 40:07Speaker 6: all gay.
- 40:07Speaker 5: I'm making I'm making the JFK Records Act every fucking
- 40:10Speaker 5: day because I am down in the weeds of this kid.
- 40:15Speaker 5: And sadly, he's got a bit of my pedantry about him,
- 40:17Speaker 5: which is, you know, tough going for all of us.
- 40:19Speaker 5: But it's like meeting myself. It's awful and where he's
- 40:23Speaker 5: the greatest. But you know what I'm saying, I was like, oh,
- 40:25Speaker 5: this must be one of us to be around, like
- 40:27Speaker 5: to be around.
- 40:27Speaker 4: Me, So then HEKMA.
- 40:33Speaker 5: But anyway, he's the greatest thing of all time. Of course,
- 40:35Speaker 5: as is my daughter who's three years old. And my
- 40:36Speaker 5: secret found me. They're nice too, so they so you know,
- 40:40Speaker 5: I never say that. So I'm now we watch pause,
- 40:45Speaker 5: what Daddy, what's a you know, well, who's Richard Nixon's
- 40:47Speaker 5: Is that Richard Nixon's enemies list? I'm like, yeah, okay,
- 40:49Speaker 5: that one. I know, no worries every time. We're just
- 40:54Speaker 5: watching and he's just he says, Daddy watched this. Daddy
- 40:56Speaker 5: was at Daddy was this, And I love it because
- 40:59Speaker 5: I am thrilled by the idea of going, oh, okay,
- 41:02Speaker 5: well they're referencing a movie where this happens, or that's
- 41:05Speaker 5: because this person used to do that, or that's based
- 41:08Speaker 5: on this person.
- 41:09Speaker 3: I love it and he's interested.
- 41:11Speaker 5: Yes, it's just it's so fun to sit there with
- 41:15Speaker 5: him and just sort of, you know, pick the references
- 41:19Speaker 5: as we go.
- 41:19Speaker 6: It's so fun.
- 41:20Speaker 4: There's nothing better than being able to teach, except being
- 41:23Speaker 4: able to teach someone who really wants to learn.
- 41:25Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly, And while we're laughing, while we'll laughing, you know,
- 41:29Speaker 5: it's just he just laughing.
- 41:30Speaker 3: He just laughs about it. Does he ever turn to
- 41:32Speaker 3: you to sort of go, was that funny? Like my son,
- 41:34Speaker 3: I find someone I'm watching it and I'm laughing sort
- 41:36Speaker 3: of look at me, and he goes, oh, that must
- 41:37Speaker 3: be funny. I'm gona laugh as well.
- 41:39Speaker 5: That was Nixon's enemies list. When I saw it, I laughed,

- 42:14Speaker 5: My favorite favorite moments, it's when he Grimey rots out
- 42:19Speaker 5: to the house and this that the first, the disheveled
- 42:23Speaker 5: nature of Grimy, that he's going to another job, and
- 42:25Speaker 5: that the family's all lined up and everyone's perfect. It's
- 42:28Speaker 5: this tiny moment where he goes, Simpson, I have to
- 42:31Speaker 5: get to my job, and he stops me.
- 42:34Speaker 6: He goes, he goes with his house.
- 42:38Speaker 5: That's I love that bit because just so it's funny,
- 42:41Speaker 5: but it's just so, it's perfectly written, it's perfectly timed.
- 42:46Speaker 6: It's just so perfect.
- 42:48Speaker 4: One of my favorites is an immediate follow on from that,
- 42:50Speaker 4: where he's like, how can you afford to live in
- 42:51Speaker 4: a house? Lives at home? Is like, don't ask me
- 42:54Speaker 4: how the economy works.
- 42:55Speaker 6: Don't ask me how the economy works. Is just her.
- 42:59Speaker 6: It's so spot on. I agree with you.
- 43:01Speaker 5: The first the opening montage to get us to know
- 43:04Speaker 5: what Grimy is.
- 43:05Speaker 3: Like, is just abanded by his parents at the age four.
- 43:08Speaker 4: Heaven Delivering presents the more fortunate.
- 43:13Speaker 5: Delivering presents the more fortunate. I mean, you're never going
- 43:18Speaker 5: to write a joke as good as that. You can
- 43:19Speaker 5: just hope that at some point you're.
- 43:21Speaker 3: Close pitching himself to feel pain again.
- 43:23Speaker 6: Healthy and fails to feel pain again. Oh man, that is.
- 43:28Speaker 5: And then the dog, the dog, the first part of
- 43:31Speaker 5: the dog, get me that dog, And then the dog's
- 43:32Speaker 5: barking at Grimy when he's cross with you.
- 43:35Speaker 3: That is threatening, threatening of a job they didn't even
- 43:39Speaker 3: ask for in the first place.
- 43:40Speaker 6: We didn't want.
- 43:41Speaker 5: That's just so wonderful. And tell you what else is really
- 43:44Speaker 5: good in the b story when Bart wanders past the
- 43:47Speaker 5: thing what gonna get for a Latin number of seventy
- 43:49Speaker 5: one seventy a buck? The phrase a buck, and then
- 43:56Speaker 5: that the little auction you're going off.
- 43:57Speaker 4: That's all. I'm just looking at Dando's notes here under favorites,
- 44:07Speaker 4: and we've both got hey, hey, stretch, what's the good
- 44:11Speaker 4: work so much?
- 44:14Speaker 3: Because he's not being a jerk, he's trying to be nice.
- 44:18Speaker 4: Yeah, but I can see how that would get incredibly irritated.
- 44:22Speaker 5: I stretch, what's yeah, that's a really good joke as well,
- 44:26Speaker 5: so that that that's my the chief And then of
- 44:29Speaker 5: course everyone's favorite moment when Grimy or Grimy as you
- 44:35Speaker 5: into the coffin's the channel mode and everyone starts laughing
- 44:39Speaker 5: that is my son really laughed at that, and I
- 44:43Speaker 5: really laughed at that, and you go, because that's one
- 44:45Speaker 5: of those things where they've written it so well that
- 44:48Speaker 5: you're thinking to yourself.
- 44:49Speaker 6: How are they going to get themselves out of this one?
- 44:51Speaker 5: And then watching my son, Oh, I died, I died,
- 44:55Speaker 5: and then he laughs at changed the channel, change the gam.
- 45:00Speaker 3: Just what's what to say about the death of Grimy?
- 45:03Speaker 4: Ry was asking for it?
- 45:06Speaker 6: Classic spots well done.
- 45:08Speaker 5: One of the great things about him is you will
- 45:11Speaker 5: never pin him down to sincerity, and that is just
- 45:15Speaker 5: such a fresh air in my dream in life. Is
- 45:18Speaker 5: that he gets forced to go on one of those
- 45:19Speaker 5: shows that I call Millionaires winging, where rich people go
- 45:23Speaker 5: on podcast to cry about how vulnerable they are.
- 45:27Speaker 6: That is.
- 45:30Speaker 4: CEO fucking see it.
- 45:35Speaker 6: So they yeah.
- 45:36Speaker 5: So that to me is just that's one thing I
- 45:39Speaker 5: love about him. And there's such a nineties attitude, that
- 45:42Speaker 5: is a nineties attitude done to perfection, that that sort
- 45:46Speaker 5: of I don't want to sell out even though I'm
- 45:48Speaker 5: a zillion are staying mildly what's the word cantankerous, but
- 45:53Speaker 5: not being an asshole about it. It was just what Conan.
- 45:56Speaker 5: I've heard Conan speak about it before. You know, Conan
- 45:58Speaker 5: talked about how it was the worst time of his life.
- 46:00Speaker 5: It was the best time of his life. But you
- 46:02Speaker 5: realize with Conan, because he's such a crazy, goofy affable fellow,
- 46:07Speaker 5: that the discipline which he talks about that was drummed
- 46:11Speaker 5: into him in those in those years while he retained
- 46:15Speaker 5: that zaniness is just so great. That's why though his
- 46:20Speaker 5: episodes are so good, I think because it's his insanity
- 46:23Speaker 5: and zaniness butting up against.
- 46:25Speaker 6: The swartsworlders of this world. That just going nut.
- 46:28Speaker 5: It's got to have an edge to it, it's got
- 46:29Speaker 5: to have a bit of cantankerous to it. And so
- 46:32Speaker 5: but you don't lose any spirit when you do it.
- 46:35Speaker 5: And the Conan episodes, I think have the best supplementary
- 46:39Speaker 5: characters that that that that we get.
- 46:41Speaker 3: Through Laura Langley, Laura Powers and and the three nerds.
- 46:46Speaker 6: Was that he you would call yeah, yeah, there's the Dean.
- 46:51Speaker 8: Oh yeah, if you want to, and straight away you go, well,
- 46:59Speaker 8: now the Pretenders, I don't know the pretenders were.
- 47:02Speaker 5: My boss, Pete was a music nerd, so he told
- 47:04Speaker 5: me who the pretenders were, and then we would watch
- 47:06Speaker 5: a pretender's think, I do you know the pretenders were?
- 47:07Speaker 6: That he showed me.
- 47:08Speaker 4: That's the thing when they're throw in gags like that.
- 47:10Speaker 4: I mean, I forgot which episode it is, but Martin
- 47:14Speaker 4: Prince has some gag where it's like first call against
- 47:17Speaker 4: ten tickets a super tramp, super.
- 47:19Speaker 5: Tramp and everyone laughs, and having done commercial radio, I'm like,
- 47:22Speaker 5: that's me.
- 47:25Speaker 6: I have done versions of that. Well, let's not forget that.
- 47:27Speaker 5: When the when when the Flanders loses this house and
- 47:32Speaker 5: they have to go to the strip shop to get clothes,
- 47:34Speaker 5: is it Todds in a butthole surface? Yes, look look daddy,
- 47:39Speaker 5: I'm a surfer. And of course you go.
- 47:42Speaker 6: That's funny, okay.
- 47:43Speaker 5: They had that one single, and apart from that, they
- 47:45Speaker 5: were like an Narco Siminus commune who played weird jam music,
- 47:50Speaker 5: which you know, something that close to him brings to
- 47:51Speaker 5: mind and you go, yeah, and the big and then
- 47:53Speaker 5: you go, oh, that's funny. And then you subsequent reading
- 47:56Speaker 5: years later, reading something close to him, wrote, you go yeah,
- 47:59Speaker 5: and they awes them to shriek to uh, to abbreviate
- 48:03Speaker 5: it to the BS no, to the B eight surfers
- 48:05Speaker 5: when it was on radio, and you know, so that's
- 48:07Speaker 5: just a that's a six level joke, which is as
- 48:10Speaker 5: good as it gets.
- 48:11Speaker 4: Oh yeah.
- 48:12Speaker 3: Another moment for me is the super relatable not even
- 48:14Speaker 3: in the ape, it's in the B plot and it's
- 48:16Speaker 3: relatable as I get old as a kid, didn't quite
- 48:18Speaker 3: get why this was funny, but Millhouse was walking around saying, so,
- 48:21Speaker 3: this is my life, this is.
- 48:24Speaker 5: My life is It's like, you know, you know, you
- 48:27Speaker 5: guys talk a lot about things to get means, and
- 48:28Speaker 5: of course the number one is that through the which
- 48:31Speaker 5: through the hedge is you know, one day I'd love
- 48:35Speaker 5: someone to do a really good, smart definitive how the
- 48:39Speaker 5: fuck did through the Hedge become the meme to end
- 48:42Speaker 5: all memes.
- 48:43Speaker 3: I'm the same with steamed hands and it's not a
- 48:45Speaker 3: funny joke, but it's a great reaction. It's a gift.
- 48:47Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, but what's that?
- 48:49Speaker 5: How did it go from that in a Simpsons episode
- 48:52Speaker 5: to a world star of Now.
- 48:55Speaker 3: It's a funk o pop.
- 48:56Speaker 5: Well, I'd love to anyway, I'd I would just I'd
- 49:00Speaker 5: love that.
- 49:01Speaker 6: I'd love to know that.
- 49:02Speaker 5: Also, Kner wrote the New York episode, which didn't make
- 49:05Speaker 5: my list but.
- 49:06Speaker 3: Should have now a the Three, didn't He Yeah, because
- 49:09Speaker 3: he wrotes the city of New York versus Homer. Now
- 49:11Speaker 3: that was like season that was like season eight. He
- 49:13Speaker 3: less in like season four.
- 49:14Speaker 5: I thought he wrote nine. I thought he wrote some
- 49:16Speaker 5: of that one for nine.
- 49:17Speaker 3: Maybe I'm wrong, Maybe maybe he contributed to it. Yeah,
- 49:20Speaker 3: but he's a soul writer on the Okay, maybe you're right.
- 49:22Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, yeah, but.
- 49:23Speaker 5: That's got the Well, that's not the world's greatest joke
- 49:25Speaker 5: in it.
- 49:26Speaker 6: Give me again a drink Mountain j.
- 49:29Speaker 4: Or crab juice, crab juice, Give me a crab juice.
- 49:34Speaker 5: And then years later that guy in an episode where
- 49:37Speaker 5: he's got a crab juice and hula halash like Empire
- 49:41Speaker 5: around America.
- 49:42Speaker 3: Yeah, Cam, I so good, am I?
- 49:45Speaker 6: But who's got that institutional memory?
- 49:47Speaker 5: They're sitting there, they're going, we need someone who sells food,
- 49:50Speaker 5: and someone goes you know what, what if the guy
- 49:52Speaker 5: from fifteen years ago who sold hull halash and crab
- 49:55Speaker 5: juice on a street vending machine. Now, like, who who
- 49:59Speaker 5: is the person you go to find this out for me?
- 50:00Speaker 5: And I'd love you to let me who is the
- 50:02Speaker 5: person who holds the institutional memory at the Simpsons as
- 50:04Speaker 5: it Gene? I would love is it our Gene?
- 50:07Speaker 3: Yeah, because he's the guy that go to and he'll
- 50:11Speaker 3: go we did that in episode seven four zero to
- 50:13Speaker 3: season twelve, we can't do it again.
- 50:15Speaker 4: I love that.
- 50:16Speaker 5: Yeah, that's so it's ol Gene who does that.
- 50:18Speaker 3: Yeah, but he was out at the start and he
- 50:20Speaker 3: left for a while to do the critic and then
- 50:22Speaker 3: he came back critics.
- 50:23Speaker 4: Great.
- 50:23Speaker 3: Yeah, it's dense. That's a whole backstory between the critic
- 50:28Speaker 3: and versus the Simpsons where they Matt Granny was not
- 50:31Speaker 3: a fan. That's because they brought the character onto the Simpsons. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 50:36Speaker 3: I know it spit dodgy.
- 50:38Speaker 5: Yeah, that's one of those that's one of those who
- 50:39Speaker 5: came up with this scenario.
- 50:41Speaker 3: Yeah, you know. But but following for me is that
- 50:43Speaker 3: I do love the Smithers. Smithers is gay gags from
- 50:46Speaker 3: the folding the Golden here, which was just subtle enough
- 50:48Speaker 3: where if you're a kid, didn't really know what's going on.
- 50:50Speaker 3: But when Ralph brings out the malibous Stacey dream house,
- 50:52Speaker 3: it's pretty good, sir.
- 50:54Speaker 9: It's pretty good, sir. It's a great joke. It's pretty good,
- 50:58Speaker 9: sir that I think. Do you know what I realized?
- 51:03Speaker 9: You know when I got that joke? I know exactly.
- 51:05Speaker 9: I remember the exact moment where I was like, oh,
- 51:07Speaker 9: I think you might be gay. I can't remember which
- 51:11Speaker 9: episode it is, but you'll tell me. When they turned
- 51:14Speaker 9: on Smithers's computer and.
- 51:16Speaker 3: He's, hello, Smithers, quite good turning me on, you probably
- 51:24Speaker 3: should ignore that.
- 51:25Speaker 5: Yeah, now you know, because it's up to me because
- 51:28Speaker 5: I've got to go and do a thing in the minute.
- 51:30Speaker 5: So here's my I've got to I'm gonna leave you
- 51:32Speaker 5: with I'm going to tell you my marathon.
- 51:35Speaker 6: Yeah marathon.
- 51:36Speaker 5: Now I'm going to leave you with the joke that
- 51:38Speaker 5: is that is currently inspiring a show that we are
- 51:42Speaker 5: trying to make me and me and people who know
- 51:44Speaker 5: that I reference every day when we're doing it and
- 51:47Speaker 5: even send them the video Simpson's joke that changes everything.
- 51:51Speaker 5: Here we go, So mine is monorail, because you have
- 51:53Speaker 5: to have monail. It's just the way it is. I'm sorry,
- 51:56Speaker 5: but it's just the way it is. The other day
- 51:57Speaker 5: I heard something someone get on a soccer show gets
- 51:59Speaker 5: something wrong about the Simpsons episode.
- 52:01Speaker 3: Mate.
- 52:01Speaker 5: I was close to a four on I know the
- 52:07Speaker 5: guy that does show, and I almost text him like,
- 52:09Speaker 5: whoa wait? A star is Burns the film the film
- 52:15Speaker 5: with a critic as a firm film criticuing because it's
- 52:18Speaker 5: got my son's favorite joke in it. Can you guess
- 52:20Speaker 5: what my seven year old son's favorite Simpsons.
- 52:22Speaker 6: Joke so far?
- 52:23Speaker 3: I'm getting hit by football is a George. She's got
- 52:25Speaker 3: getting hit in the nuts?
- 52:26Speaker 4: Yeah, grind football in the boy.
- 52:30Speaker 3: Yeah. My son loves it to just he loves the
- 52:31Speaker 3: sound offfect dwink. The joint is perfect and Homer's follow
- 52:36Speaker 3: up laugh absolutely is just the button.
- 52:39Speaker 6: Takes him a second to get it.
- 52:41Speaker 5: My son is helpless, so we'll play football outside and
- 52:45Speaker 5: then I was just pretending to get hitting the groan
- 52:46Speaker 5: and go football in the ground and he is helpless.
- 52:51Speaker 5: Home of the great You have to you just can't not.
- 52:53Speaker 5: You can't if you don't love the stone kind of
- 52:55Speaker 5: I'm sorry. I can't help you. I can't help you
- 52:57Speaker 5: if you don't think that's the best thing to ever happened.
- 52:58Speaker 3: I supporters on Patreon arrasting that we call them.
- 53:01Speaker 6: That's perfect. Home is the Enemy, and then Homer Batman
- 53:04Speaker 6: is mine.
- 53:04Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that's rock bottom.
- 53:07Speaker 1: It's just so, it's like it's starring Dennis friand Dennis
- 53:13Speaker 1: France is in that yes, running over a cat.
- 53:17Speaker 5: It's just yeah, it's got everything. Once again. Take the
- 53:21Speaker 5: date off it, change the aspect ratio, polish it up,
- 53:25Speaker 5: put it out today, and you'll be hailed as a genius.
- 53:27Speaker 3: It's more reliable now than it was then.
- 53:29Speaker 4: Mate, don't take your anger around on me.
- 53:33Speaker 6: It's nineteen ninety four.
- 53:35Speaker 3: How did they amazing?
- 53:38Speaker 5: And I'll leave you with this. So talking Krusty is
- 53:42Speaker 5: in the Lisa Versus Malibu Stacey, right, and so please
- 53:46Speaker 5: put this in after I wander off. Now, So Lisa
- 53:49Speaker 5: is about to go and record Lisa Lionheart on the
- 53:52Speaker 5: door opens.
- 53:52Speaker 3: Crusty's in a.
- 53:53Speaker 5: Tennis uniform, all right, and he runs through the thing.
- 53:56Speaker 6: He's got a cigar.
- 53:57Speaker 5: Hey, hey, okay, here we go talking crasty lines. Yeah,
- 54:00Speaker 5: I'm talking crusty. Take take two, say Jill Mouth, Si
- 54:03Speaker 5: chi Mouth, I'm done, and he leaves and you hear
- 54:07Speaker 5: the cargo and then they pan back and the guy
- 54:10Speaker 5: is putting the real on to record it, and he says, Okay, Kristy,
- 54:14Speaker 5: we're ready to Kresty. And Krusty's gone. So we're trying
- 54:19Speaker 5: to make the show and there's got a lot of
- 54:20Speaker 5: cameos in it. And I've been testing this thing. It's
- 54:22Speaker 5: called talking crusty. If you've got someone who you're asking
- 54:27Speaker 5: for their time, and they're giving you their time, which
- 54:29Speaker 5: is great. Your only job is to be ready for
- 54:34Speaker 5: when they get there.
- 54:35Speaker 6: That's it.
- 54:36Speaker 5: That's all you gotta do. If you're ready for them,
- 54:39Speaker 5: then let them get the fuck out of there, because
- 54:41Speaker 5: they've got whatever it is, they're busy, and so you
- 54:44Speaker 5: go all good. That talking Krusty is such a great
- 54:46Speaker 5: metaphor for just fucking get just hurry up, hurry up life.
- 54:51Speaker 4: Lesson, learn from a professional kid.
- 54:55Speaker 5: Professional kid, because he's he's right, says arming and ring
- 54:59Speaker 5: and wasting everyone's time.
- 55:03Speaker 6: Thanks, he's right first, he is.
- 55:04Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, all right, Well thank you so much. I
- 55:10Speaker 3: do I know you're a very busy man, we do
- 55:11Speaker 3: appreciate you being here this week and yeah, all the
- 55:13Speaker 3: best for it comes in twenty twenty five.
- 55:15Speaker 5: Well it's been a pleasure, guys, thank you very much
- 55:17Speaker 5: for having me. It's a great show. I love that
- 55:19Speaker 5: you're doing it. It's just such a great thing to
- 55:22Speaker 5: be celebrating it. And long way it continue because it's
- 55:24Speaker 5: I'm loving the interviews you get. It's really fast, even
- 55:27Speaker 5: for Simpson's nerd like me. It's absolutely fascinating. So well
- 55:30Speaker 5: done to both of you.
- 55:31Speaker 4: Jed, appreciate it. Come back anytime, mate, Thanks Jed's.
- 55:42Speaker 3: I said is Ed Cavaliy's portion of this week's show.
- 55:45Speaker 3: What a gentleman, what a character, what a professional.
- 55:48Speaker 4: Very very much so. I mean we all have I
- 55:52Speaker 4: think a long standing relationship with Ed from the Australian
- 55:54Speaker 4: entertainment community everybody, and he generally comes across as a
- 55:59Speaker 4: very pleasant kind of brought the heater. He was throbbing fast. Great,
- 56:05Speaker 4: it was great, it was fantastic. I loved it.
- 56:07Speaker 3: Yeah, no, come back any type. But right now we're
- 56:12Speaker 3: gonna be doing our run through portion of Homy's Enemy
- 56:14Speaker 3: because you know he's a very busy man. Ad So
- 56:15Speaker 3: we got out. We've got an hour out of him.
- 56:17Speaker 3: That's he's got you know, pie too, remember the rest
- 56:26Speaker 3: he schooled us?
- 56:27Speaker 4: Absolutely? But yeah, okay, let's have your time, trip your time?
- 56:30Speaker 4: Why not?
- 56:30Speaker 3: Next question?
- 56:32Speaker 4: You there eating the paste?
- 56:34Speaker 3: All right, go for it, my face. Your first question.
- 56:36Speaker 4: My first question home had how many beers at lunch? Oh?
- 56:41Speaker 3: Ten?
- 56:42Speaker 4: Three?
- 56:43Speaker 3: Three? All right? My first question is gramy got a
- 56:46Speaker 3: diploma in nuclear physics with a minor in what.
- 56:48Speaker 4: A minor in determination?
- 56:52Speaker 3: Got?
- 56:52Speaker 4: That whole news story was fantastic.
- 56:53Speaker 3: I know, we'll get there.
- 56:55Speaker 4: Whose bordello was it?
- 56:58Speaker 7: Man?
- 56:58Speaker 3: I should know. I should have rewatched it this morning. No,
- 57:01Speaker 3: what was it? Aunt Bulah, Bulla's bordello? Yes, Bulla's bordello.
- 57:06Speaker 3: My next question is Bart's factory? Was item number?
- 57:09Speaker 4: What?
- 57:10Speaker 1: Oh?
- 57:10Speaker 4: Damn, I'm gonna say two.
- 57:13Speaker 3: Seven fifty one, so I'm completely wrong.
- 57:16Speaker 4: Uh. And my last question.
- 57:17Speaker 3: For you is what is Lisa's iq ah? This was
- 57:22Speaker 3: part of the trivia night that we went to recently.
- 57:24Speaker 3: Is it one?
- 57:26Speaker 4: You're after a good start?
- 57:27Speaker 3: One forty seven, You're very close on fifty seven? One five,
- 57:30Speaker 3: five six, damn? Because no one? And then I didn't know.
- 57:34Speaker 3: I was like, when did they do that' like it's
- 57:35Speaker 3: in Home's Enemy and I'm like, oh shit, I shouldn't go.
- 57:38Speaker 4: Everyone's see the see the words there, that's that guy.
- 57:41Speaker 3: I just write the questions. No, I just read the questions.
- 57:46Speaker 3: Are we going to host any trivia ardwer We are?
- 57:49Speaker 3: I think we shure we will.
- 57:50Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, partly because it's fun and partly because you
- 57:52Speaker 4: know when I get paid.
- 57:53Speaker 3: Yes, yes we will. Indeed, it's coming up. Sorry, what
- 57:55Speaker 3: a grifter I am. That's terrible. My final question is
- 57:58Speaker 3: who was on mo slash Richard Nicks enemy list? Give
- 58:00Speaker 3: me two of the names.
- 58:01Speaker 4: Oh god, damn it.
- 58:02Speaker 3: I just Jane Fonder, Daniel Shaw and Jack Anderson Jack Anderson.
- 58:07Speaker 4: Okay, Jane Fond was on there.
- 58:10Speaker 3: She did not like Nixon at all.
- 58:12Speaker 4: No, she was. She was very political back in the day.
- 58:15Speaker 4: Good and consider what a huge star she was. I mean,
- 58:18Speaker 4: that's it's pretty ballsy. I mean it'd be someone like
- 58:20Speaker 4: you know, Jay Law or Margot Robbie coming out now
- 58:24Speaker 4: and basically saying if you mister Trump, yeah, but or
- 58:28Speaker 4: Taylor Swift even I don't think she's going to do that.
- 58:31Speaker 4: I just jacked up our se.
- 58:32Speaker 3: Oh by the way, but Taylor, We're going to buy

- 58:45Speaker 3: give me have one more question? I know you want
- 58:46Speaker 3: to do it?
- 58:47Speaker 4: No, no, I don't I have one more That sort
- 58:49Speaker 4: of an adjunct to the first question, which was, like,
- 58:52Speaker 4: by Heleni's count, how many times should Homer have died by?
- 58:56Speaker 10: Now?
- 58:56Speaker 3: Okay, three hundred and sixteen sixteen?
- 59:01Speaker 4: I said to you, gotta keep all this in.
- 59:03Speaker 3: He said, no, there's a good chance that he might

- 1:00:49Speaker 3: Homer's Enemy was May fourth, nineteen ninety seven. Sometimes the
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: top three films at the US box office A bit
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: of a hint there, what do you think they were?
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: Number one was, oh, I think of the date nineteen
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: ninety seven and the date May the fourth on nineteen
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: ninety seven. What came out in ninety seven? It's the
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: re release of st Star Wars Special Editions. Yeah, so
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: number three was Empire Strikes Back. Number two was Dottie Brascot,
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: and number one was a New Hope. So George had
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: two of the top three boxes of films he'd already made,
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: What a Grifter? What a Grifter? But you know, were
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: loving for it. But I remember going to see those
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: Star Wars Special editions. That was the first time I've
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: obviously seen Star Wars in the cinema, and I remember
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: seeing the jab of the Hut and going even as
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: like a I would have been what eight going in Q?
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: Pretty good? Yeah, I do remember that. I can remember
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: watching the new stories for it, saying new scenes of
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: Star Wars. It felt exciting at the time. Oh sure, Yeah,
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: it's like check out this new scene of a pound
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: solo and jab of the heart and stuff like that.
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: And then you're watching it and you're like, like when
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: he's going up and over the tail in twenty twenty five,
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: they haven't fixed.
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: It still looks shit even the whole You know, Harn
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: shot first thing. They need, no need. It was clear
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: that greed I was going to kill him. Yah. Hahn
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: was well truly justified and shooting first because Greta was
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: about to shoot. Correct.
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: Yes, he doesn't have the wait to be shot act
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: before he has to shoot somebody.
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: That's right, And you know it builds Harn's story as well.
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: I mean he starts off he's a little bit Ruthlessly'm
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: not sure percent sure if you can trust this guy
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: by the end who comes back to help save the day. Chewey.
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: That's right. Spoilers for Star Wars.
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: That's what Ali got out of his charing.
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: Did a fist pump I should hope so yeah, hopefully
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: didn't hit anybody.
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: The chop ball gave for this episode. I did not
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: learn everything I need to know in kindergarten, which is
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: reused from the episode You Only Moved Twice with Hank
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: Hank Scorpio and the Causch gave bart Is green so
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: have a read just the TV to fix his color
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: and then slaps him on the back of the head
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: to fix it all up. The episode kicks off with
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: a Brocklyn news report, which, if true, means death for
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: us was touched on.
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: With Ed, one of my favorite sis.
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: Yes, now it's Kent's People and there's the Franks Graham story.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: So we've already touched on with Ed, but the abandoned
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: at by his parents at the age of four, and
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: they film it. It's the drup you way and Frank's
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: look like a four year old is going, oh well,
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: this is my life.
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: And now Cat's People. Tonight's inspiring story is about Frank Grimes,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: a thirty five year old Springfield height who's earned everything
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: the hard way but never let adversity get him down.
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: Abandoned by his parents at age four, Frank never got
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: to go to school. He spent his childhood years as
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: a delivery boy delivering toys to more fortunate children.
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: Then on his.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Eighteenth birthday, he was blown up in a silo explosion.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: During his long recuperation, he taught himself to hear and
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: feel pain again. As the years passed, he used his
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: few leisure moments each day to study science by mail.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: And last week Frank Grimes, the man who had to
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: struggle for everything he ever got, received his correspondence school
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: diploma in nuclear physics with a minor in determination.
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: They're sitting up from the get go that life's not
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: going to be easy for this guy.
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: But nevertheless still going to power through because he believes
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: that if you work hard and believe in yourself, you know,
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: and commit, things will eventually go right for you.
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: Clearly never watched the Simpsons because the lesson has never tried,
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: has never tried. Yes, but mister Burns is watching this
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: on the TV, and he realized that's the kind of
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: man that he wants working for him, must have making
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: his junior vice president.
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: A scraper, a self made band like me.
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: So he asked me this to bring him so he
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: can make him the executive executive vice president. I'm not
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: junior vice prist the executive vice president. The next day, Smithers
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: brings in old Roaming and mister Burns has completely forgotten
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: about him because he's now seen a story about a
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: brave dog who pulled a todder from the path of
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: a spinning car and push a criminal right in front
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: of it. Find to me, you find this dog to
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: make him my junior vice president. Well, that's the dog's
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: junior vice president. Yes, and he introduces Frank Grimes, who
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: put him somewhere out of the way and find that dogging.
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: It feels so so over Grimy, as I said with ed,
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: he didn't ask for this job. He got brought in
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: and hidden.
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: And it just turned out terribly for him. By the way,
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: we're just as complicit. You'll call him grimy from the
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: get go. It's not his name. It's not his nickname
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: that he wants.
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: I don't care what gives stretch.
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: Who cares what this guy wants?
- 1:05:17Speaker 3: So Homer is now spinning on his chair. Chair goes round, chair,
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: goes round. Lenny and can ask if you're busy. Yep,
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: I'm busy. And it suggests we should probably meet Frank Grimes.
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: He's the next guy, new guy. I'm kind of dizzy.
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: He should probably go home sick. Grimes is sorting his
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: pencils out and they're watching him through the window. Walks
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: it you knew. It's kind of like when you get
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: into a cab busy.
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: Night, mate, Always do it, Always do it.
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: You have to do it. It's almost like they expect it.
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: If you're disappointed if you don't ask.
- 1:05:44Speaker 4: Yeah, it takes the drivers. Uber's Yeah, just.
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: Story. Nick and I we went out for town and
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: recently on the town, recent for a birthday.
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: Cool story of his more it's.
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: More yes, And we got into a cab, not a Nuba,
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: and we got about five minutes down the rain just goes, yeah,
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: my night's been good. Thanks, and we're like, oh, are
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: we supposed to ask?
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: I broke the social contract?
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: Oh dear, I'm just joking, just joking, But for a
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: brief I was like, oh's part of the transaction. But yeah,
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: Lenny introduces Karl.
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: I'm Lenny.
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: He's Karl. I'm Lenny, just basically pointing out these guys
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: have nothing to add to Frank Grimes's life at all.
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: But Homer can't believe that he has pencils with his
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: name on him. It's way too fancy for him. And
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: Grimes tells and that any office supplies company can have
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: you made from It just feels very Frank Grimes, doesn't
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: it that he'd have his name on his own pencil?
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: Sure?
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: Do you think he does that because it's just makes
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: him feel more important, or because he's just trying to
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: say these are mine, don't touch.
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: I think he's trying to sort of assert his personality
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: and affirme his own identity is.
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: Well, everything he does has he's labeled, like he's lunch
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: got my name on it.
- 1:06:48Speaker 4: His name. So much has been taken away from his
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: life that he needs to get a bit predicted as
- 1:06:52Speaker 4: you would be, wouldn't think so? Yeah, But then Homer asked,
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: can I have a pencil? No? Can Lenny?
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: No? Then he shows off his degree in nuclear physics,
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: and Homer says that they've all got what except for Homer.
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: I'm here to show up the day they opened the plant. Now,
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: if this was said in a season twenty episode, I'd
- 1:07:10Speaker 3: be annoyed by it, right, because it's clear that that's
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: not how Homer got the joint of the power plant.
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: If you've watched season one of the show. So in
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: season eight, were people annoyed by this? I don't think so.
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: So when people say, oh, no, they've changed the history,
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: it's like they've been doing it since season, if not earlier.
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: Continuity. Just roll with it. It, just just roll with it.
- 1:07:27Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, well listen, I'm sure we all have a
- 1:07:31Speaker 10: lot of work to do.
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: M Hey, do you make a great guy? So we'll
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: give you a little tip. If you're turning the security
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: camera around, you can sleep and no one will ever know.
- 1:07:45Speaker 3: I don't think we're being paid to sleep.
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: Oh yeah, they're always trying to screw you.
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: Margin's then trying to buy a personalized license plate. Marge's
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: taking and tries Marjorie no Mitzi Mitsi's taken? Can you
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: have nitzy y? Have you ever been a situation where
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: it's like I've got to set off or something?
- 1:08:03Speaker 4: Is this good enough? I guess no, sure, yeah, I
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: mean not necessarily personalized number plates.
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: Just were trying to make it like a user account.
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: It's like, oh, guy Davis has taken. What do you
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: mean it's taking? Oh that's true, Yeah, I mean, what
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: do you mean it's another Brendan Dando out there in
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: the world.
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: There are oftentimes it's like, well, if I can't have
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: this email address or whatever, then figured I'm just learning.
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: And meanwhile, though Bard is bored by listening to this conversation.
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: So he goes to listen to the tax seizure's auction
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: and he bid bids a buck on a seven fifty one,
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: which turns out to be a thirty five industry way,
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: which is an abandoned factory. Yeah, it would be fucking awesome,
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: wouldn't it be if you just owned a factory like
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: it's yours. It just it just sit there making money
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: because it's going to be worth money eventually, right sure,
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: well if not, if.
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: Not the buildings, then certainly, And that's what I'm to say, Yeah,
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: how do you get this for a buck? Yeah? House?
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: Have you ever been to an auction that wasn't there
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: won an auction that wasn't eBay, Like you even gone
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: to a house auction or.
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I've been to a couple of house auctions, have
- 1:09:00Speaker 4: a bid on it. I think maybe before I bought
- 1:09:04Speaker 4: my house, there was one or two that I did
- 1:09:06Speaker 4: bid on. Yeah, but I realized, like, I think there's
- 1:09:08Speaker 4: going to be out of my range. But yeah, I'll
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: just say at the low end. Yeah, and made me
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: feel all grown up.
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: We went to check out a house viewing recently, and
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: they're gonna have an auction at the end of it,
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: and we were just like, I'll just check on out.
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: We want to see what the viewers like from this
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: area of Geelong. And then the auction started and nobody bid,
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: and the homeowners just sort of stand there any bits,
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: any bits, and sort of standing there, and I was
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: sort of thinking, my do I start it? Do I
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: start with a bid? And that I'm like, no, because
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: then no one else might. You're lumbered with this dud.
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: If you put your hand up and say you want
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: to bid on something, do you legally have to then
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: pay it?
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: Wrong?
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: You're just signing a contract. No, but.
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: That's a really good question. I'm not sure.
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: You just run that where they make fake bids and
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: then the guys run off. That's true, Yeah, but I
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: was just sort of thinking, going, I know my house, Like, no,
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: don't do that, because in your might.
- 1:10:01Speaker 4: To buy a house, hands in your pockets.
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: Homer is now eating Frank Grimes a special dietetic lunch.
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: Oh yeah, stretch, what's the good word? And Grimes takes
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: a pretty wife. Someone ate my lunch, particularly if I'd
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: labeled it, I'd be livid.
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: Oh God, of course you would. I mean, look, I'm
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: sorry to say it, Frank Grimes is kind of unlikable
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: in a lot of ways.
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: We all have these people in our lives where you
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: know they're right, but you still don't like that. Oh yeah,
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: you have every right to be annoyed and pissed off,
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: but it's.
- 1:10:30Speaker 4: Like, yeah and every yeah, everything goes wrong from here
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: due to Home Home. Home is not good in this
- 1:10:36Speaker 4: I was doing anything wrong, but still you kin't of
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: on homicide. Well I'm kind of on homicide anyway, because
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: I find Grimes so yeah, straight up and down and
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: kind of irritating as a result.
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: As I was saying to add earlier, it's that when
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: I was younger, I always saw Frank Grimes as the enemy.
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: You know who episode is called Homer's Enemy. I saw
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: it was the bad guy I had to mistreat Home
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: like this bubblic because I loved Homer, and in the
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: older I get them. Or I'm not saying I'm siding
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: with Grimes. I guess you could say I understand, yes, absolutely, yeah,
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: when sometimes I watch this episode and I go, you
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: know what, Frank Grymes is pretty much my spirit animal.
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: Like I'm walk I walk around and people just bother me.
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: I'm like, sure, you know, it's like not just I'm
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: driving around now and I'm like, why are you crossing
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: the street there? When when does a walk away ten
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: minutes to her left? And I'm just like that shouldn't
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: bother me. But like I'm just people are just dumb.
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: Like all it takes is for you to take the
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: step at the wrong time, you're gonna get run over.
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: You ruin your family's lives. You've ruined, like your life's over.
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: It's like there's lights there for a reason, Like just
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: little ruin my day. Like people are just dumb, Like
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: why are people so dumb? The world is just dumb?
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: I got no reply to it. Do you think the
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: world is dumb? Well? Bit today? Sometimes you just wake young.
- 1:11:49Speaker 4: Oh God, another day of that ship.
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: But Frank Grimes says, you know, Horoma, with the trouble
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: learning your name, the least you can do is learn mine. Okay,
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: gry And then he realizes he's eating the lunch, gives
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: it back, takes a few more bites, gives it back
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: to him, just throws it into the bin, frustrating and
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: Homer riches for it. See this this is classic SIPs
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: is where it's like it could have He throws it
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: in the bin, reaching for it. Is this is this
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: that little button? This is what's what? Wasn't it?
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: I believe?
- 1:12:14Speaker 10: So?
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: Yeah, He then finds it was because he's the one
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: that said that grummy was asking for it. Then he
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: finds his pencils or chewed up and discovers homing with them,
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: just cleaning out his ears and stabs when an anger
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: and yeah, I'd be furious as well. But as then
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: checking out the warehouse, it's filthy and it's all mine.
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: He throws the screw to see how far. It's kind
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: of like the test of how deep a hole is,
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: isn't it? Every second is a meter or something? Is
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: that how it works? Something along those lines.
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: I feel like I'm being tested today. Yeah, a lot
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: of things, like I wouldn't know about an I wouldn't
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: know about holes. We got good.
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: You're me both, brother. So then he gets on a
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: chair with the fire extemas as to keep watching this,
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: I always just thought does this work? And man, it
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: was like a lot of fun.
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: Ah. I'm always terrified of like using a extinguished in
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: any way.
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: I just seemed I had to use it. When the
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: barbieet got on fire, I had no idea what I
- 1:13:04Speaker 3: was doing. I was like, I hope this works. This
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: is good, Like everybody, well, the house is silly, so
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: I'm gooding? Did yeah? I and the fence, Yeah that
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: was That was lucky that day. But when bart is
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: just walking around the factory here, it's just kind of
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: a sad memory. But my dad used to work a
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: candy footwear, you know, candy footwear. And some of my
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: favorite memories as a kid I going to the factory
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: with Dad and just everyone was uncle, Uncle, George, Auntie.
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: He's got a slav and there's all these you know,
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: all my uncles, and Auntie says all the works. I'd
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: walk around the factory wait, and I say out the window.
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: Dad be like, right, just ten minutes and come back,
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: and he'd be sitting in his office. I'd be walking
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: around his factory, just this little kid. Hey, but to day,
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: don't I sit down and help make shoes and whatnot?
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: And then it closed down. I remember Dad went there
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: yet text some from his office. We walked in and
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: it was just empty. I remember walking and going, ah,
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: it's like it's really gone.
- 1:13:52Speaker 4: Well yeah, and I'd use this giant line all the
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: time as a joke, but yeah, we used to make things.
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: Yeah, and the same as what. I went to Ford
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: after down because we had to do the proper shutdown,
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: and I walked in, I was like, oh, the press
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: machines are gone. Yeah, it's empty. Oh it really is finished.
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: Yeah, And driving past, you know the full factory now,
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: yeah you used to. I mean it's being used for
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: something or I don't know, turn.
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: It into an industrial area whatever. But it's sad.
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: It's this huge car park that used to, you know,
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: be full of cars and people who would go work there,
- 1:14:23Speaker 4: and now it's just like, oh my god, look at
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: all this space. Yeah, I've got these jobs that aren't
- 1:14:27Speaker 4: there anymore. Yeah.
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: But I remember walking to Candy Foot where and not
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: knowing nothing's going to be in there, walking in and.
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: Going oh yeah, oh it's all gone. It's not to
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: be too milder. It's almost like looking at the dead body.
- 1:14:38Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just it was really sad. And I remember
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: seeing Dad sort of like tear up that day because
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: it's sort of like the reality hit him as well,
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: because he was like I think he knew it was
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: going to be that way. But he's like, ah, yeah, anyway,
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: it for like thirty years home now and enters Grimy's
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: office being annoying. I've always loved this is one of
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: my favorites where we're just like it just feels like, damn.
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: It was the same prombing, just big, a fucking nuisance.
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: Everything everything he does is just designed to frustrate. It's
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: incredibly annoying.
- 1:15:06Speaker 10: Joh, how's it going, Gray, I'd appreciate it if you'd
- 1:15:10Speaker 10: stay out of my office.
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: Simpson, in which I had a nickel for every time
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: I heard Dad take me up to the ball game.
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: Take me to the ball Oh, what's do Grimy Simpson?
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: You got a five thirteen?
- 1:15:34Speaker 10: Now a five thirteen in your procedures manual, A five thirteen?
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: Look at your control panel? Oh a five thirty.
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: I'll handle it him, I got it.
- 1:15:59Speaker 3: Bot is now in his office. If you can call
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: it that, Abby's warehouse warehouse factory, factory, isn't it? Yeah?
- 1:16:05Speaker 3: And he sees Millhouse walk past the window and obviously
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: him a job. I'm a busy man. You want a
- 1:16:08Speaker 3: job or not. There's not really much to this speed plot.
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: Like rewatching this episode, I remember being more predominant in
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: the episode. There's not much to it, but it's always
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: just been one of my favorite side plods because it's
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: just so simple. Bits are so interesting, like bar owns
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: a factory, and I think millhouse work there, Like I
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: think as a keep watching going, it'd be so cool.
- 1:16:30Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: It's kind of like when you get your first house
- 1:16:32Speaker 3: with a mate and you sort of just oh, and
- 1:16:34Speaker 3: has no parents around his house, do what I want. Yeah,
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: it's just like having their own factory to hang it,
- 1:16:39Speaker 3: having a factory to hang out. But then Homer is
- 1:16:42Speaker 3: eating like a pig. It's more like a duck. Yeah,
- 1:16:45Speaker 3: things tend to ch they tend to chew. Yes, grumming
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: and winds about him slipping in a suit, and Lenny
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: and Color like, well, what's the problem. We have no
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: issue with Homer? Yeah, three, Well we have three bus
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: at lunch. They make anybody sleepy. And they explain that
- 1:16:56Speaker 3: he's in charge about safety. That man, he's in charge
- 1:16:58Speaker 3: about safety. This is pretty much sums up my life
- 1:17:02Speaker 3: in a lot of ways. It's best enough to think
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: about it. Sometimes when the kids you hear like a
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: bang or the kids are doing something, it's like it's
- 1:17:09Speaker 3: best to knowledge. Just let it go. You don't screaming,
- 1:17:12Speaker 3: It's all right, Yes, if they're alive, just just go
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: with it. Have you been caught sleeping at work in
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: any way?
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: No. We used a nap at Ford all.
- 1:17:22Speaker 3: The time, really, especially on afternoon shift. We'll be like
- 1:17:24Speaker 3: eleven o'clock and sometimes we work over time, maybe like
- 1:17:27Speaker 3: three in the morning. We've been there since like four,
- 1:17:30Speaker 3: and there's mattresses there and we just have a nap,
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: like go half an hour, go a kip, and like.
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: They just just cover each other. That's nice.
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: Yeah, it was a real I said, Nick. It's been
- 1:17:41Speaker 3: nearly ten years since four clothes. But I look back
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: and I'm like, we had a pretty good there. If
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: we've got to thirty degrees, we got to stop working
- 1:17:48Speaker 3: like that.
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: Is got to have a nap if it got yeah wow.
- 1:17:53Speaker 3: Well not legally, we're not supposed to it had naps,
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: but just but the supervisor didn't care, like Gary no
- 1:17:58Speaker 3: longer with us rest in peace absolute, letting him just like, yeah.
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: I have a rest and now Gary's resting.
- 1:18:04Speaker 3: Because he basically he was that guy who he used
- 1:18:06Speaker 3: to the used to say, when you become a supervisor,
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: become one of the boys right then the boys club,
- 1:18:11Speaker 3: they used to call it a ford, and he didn't
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: want to be part of the boys cut. He'd eat
- 1:18:14Speaker 3: because when guys become supervisors eat the supervisor's office and
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: he'd still eat with us.
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: So he was, well, he was one of the boys,
- 1:18:20Speaker 4: but he was one of the boys.
- 1:18:21Speaker 3: Yeah, because he started just a worker and then when
- 1:18:23Speaker 3: he got mad supervisor, he still stayed. He hung out
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: with us, right, but then they asked him to night
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: shift because he was just not He was always questioning
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: what their decisions and same minute to do this on
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: day shift, so they put him on night shift. So
- 1:18:35Speaker 3: when he's on night was like, ah, you a fuck.
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: As long as its long we make enough parts, who cares.
- 1:18:40Speaker 4: That's a good philosophy. As long as her part gets made.
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: He used to say, as long as youre not doing
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: anything dangerous and you get the man that the work
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: done he is supposed to get done, only a funk
- 1:18:48Speaker 3: what you do. It's like, well, that's how you should
- 1:18:51Speaker 3: approach it, right absolutely, as if you're getting ship done
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: and you're not hurting anybody, go for it wouldn't be great.
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: Everybody filled that way. Then Homer in the lunch room
- 1:19:00Speaker 3: and he almost drinks acid and Grammy saves him, and
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: that would have been stupid. This is the one point
- 1:19:05Speaker 3: where I thought home it was dumbed down a little
- 1:19:07Speaker 3: bit too much. Oh, my face would have been red.
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: I was like, ah, but it sets up Frank Grime's
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: going it's the laughing room beside, You're gonna be dead.
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: And he just stares blankly at him as mister Burns
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: walks past with the junior vice president dog. Great call
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: back there, and Homer says, who did this? He did it?
- 1:19:25Speaker 3: And he's not lying. Well, that's true, Grammy did do it,
- 1:19:28Speaker 3: and Burns braces him. How dare you destroy my valuable
- 1:19:30Speaker 3: wall and spill my precious acid? No priceless accident. You
- 1:19:33Speaker 3: think you're gonna get away with it? And against you're
- 1:19:36Speaker 3: going to give one more chance at a reduced salary,
- 1:19:40Speaker 3: and the dog barks in. That's the kick of the
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: dog barking at him. Grimmy then goes to see Homer
- 1:19:45Speaker 3: and says, I hate you, or just stay away from you,
- 1:19:47Speaker 3: because they're enemies.
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: Me, the most beloved man in Springfield.
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: What do I have to do anything? Grammy can't even
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: respond Homer's now sad is that most you can't believe
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: he has an enemy, and most of even I have no,
- 1:20:00Speaker 3: I won't have it. There's no way you have enemies.
- 1:20:02Speaker 3: And he shows me his Listen, there's troops, Jane Fonder,
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: Daniel show Jack Anderson, and Barney points out as Nixon.
- 1:20:07Speaker 3: So then he adds Barney's name to it as well.
- 1:20:10Speaker 3: Have you ever had an enemy? I'm sure I Have
- 1:20:12Speaker 3: you ever had someone in your life where you don't
- 1:20:13Speaker 3: quite understand why they don't like it? There was a
- 1:20:15Speaker 3: kid of schools. There was Richard right, and he just
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: hated me. And I never really associated with him, and
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: like we were friends in the early years, and then
- 1:20:22Speaker 3: he just decided he hated me. And I've never still
- 1:20:25Speaker 3: did this day. I've ever meet him again and see me,
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: I'd be like.
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: Why did you hate me? What was it that I
- 1:20:29Speaker 4: did that just triggered you? He just he hated me.
- 1:20:32Speaker 3: And we had the same friendship circle. So we still
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: have to hang out like every lunch, but he wanted
- 1:20:36Speaker 3: nothing to do with me, and he never explained why
- 1:20:38Speaker 3: he just hated me.
- 1:20:40Speaker 4: It's hard to understand. There was a guy named Andrew
- 1:20:43Speaker 4: when I was at Uni. I think his sister was
- 1:20:45Speaker 4: going out with my good friend, so our paths would
- 1:20:48Speaker 4: sort of occasionally cross and one I were out of
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: this party, and yeah, I think we were all fairly drunk.
- 1:20:56Speaker 4: But he just sort of boiled me up against the
- 1:20:58Speaker 4: wall and was.
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: Really get told this story. Yeah, and do you think
- 1:21:02Speaker 3: you're talking to his girls? No, that was a different time. Yeah,
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: that guy haded me as well.
- 1:21:06Speaker 4: I don't know what. Yeah, but this guy was like
- 1:21:10Speaker 4: really getting ready to throw down. And I was genuinely
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: confused because I mean I didn't like the guy, but
- 1:21:17Speaker 4: I didn't dislike the guy either, But for some reason,
- 1:21:20Speaker 4: he just really took of fans. Yeah. Maybe it was
- 1:21:23Speaker 4: just because so charming and handsome.
- 1:21:24Speaker 3: Maybe jealous, that's true. This show was brought to you

- 1:21:54Speaker 3: says he should invite him for dinner, get him comfortable,
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: and then my mo member is bam, you'll fog in
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: the eye, and Home he considers trying without the fog
- 1:22:02Speaker 3: one was always the first time. It's time for dinner.
- 1:22:04Speaker 3: Home is very nervous because he wants us to go
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: really really well, wants to go perfect. Sure, tells everyone
- 1:22:07Speaker 3: to be perfect, just be perfect, you perfect, you perfect
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: maybe perfect. Marche has only five lobsters and she's worried
- 1:22:14Speaker 3: that she won't have enough if he brings a guest
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: and hasn't actually told him that it's dinner. It's like wry,
- 1:22:18Speaker 3: he doesn't know it's He's not going to bring anybody.
- 1:22:20Speaker 3: And the hilarious part about this is that I don't
- 1:22:22Speaker 3: think Home even realizes why he wants to be friends
- 1:22:24Speaker 3: with Frank Grimes. He's just not used to someone, just
- 1:22:26Speaker 3: like I don't like him as he's like, he doesn't
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: know how to handle it. He's just like this.
- 1:22:30Speaker 4: He doesn't want a friend, but he doesn't want an enemy.
- 1:22:32Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, And I think that none of us want enemies.
- 1:22:34Speaker 3: But Grimey arrives to Cassida, Simpsons and he looks all disheveled.
- 1:22:39Speaker 3: He's got the briefcase or shit coming out of it everywhere,
- 1:22:42Speaker 3: and Home introduces the family. Lisa got a one fifty
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: six IQ bar, owns a factory downtown. But Grimes he
- 1:22:48Speaker 3: can't get over the size of Homer's house.
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: Good heavens, this is a palace. How in the rook
- 1:22:55Speaker 4: can you afford to live in a house like this?
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: Simpson, Oh, don't ask me out of your acoudomy work.
- 1:23:00Speaker 4: Yeah, but look at the size of this place.
- 1:23:02Speaker 10: I live in a single room above a bowling alley
- 1:23:05Speaker 10: and below another bowling alley.
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: WHOA, I'm sorry, isn't that Yeah? That's me all right?
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: And a guy standing next to me is President Gerald Ford.
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: And this is when I was on tour with the
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: Smashing Pumpkins. Oh, and here's a picture of me in
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: outer space.
- 1:23:20Speaker 4: You went in outer space?
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: You sure you've never been? Would you like to see
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: my Grammy award?
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: No?
- 1:23:28Speaker 10: I wouldn't draw. I've had to work hard every day
- 1:23:31Speaker 10: of my life. And what do I have to show
- 1:23:33Speaker 10: for it? This briefcase and this haircut? And what do
- 1:23:37Speaker 10: you have to show for your lifetime of sloth and ignorance?
- 1:23:42Speaker 10: What everything, A dream house, two cars, a beautiful wife,
- 1:23:47Speaker 10: sun new owns, a factory, fancy clothes and lobsters for dinner.
- 1:23:53Speaker 4: And do you deserve any of it?
- 1:23:55Speaker 5: No?
- 1:23:57Speaker 4: What are you saying? Saying?
- 1:24:00Speaker 3: You're what's wrong with America? Simpson?
- 1:24:03Speaker 4: You coast through life, You do.
- 1:24:05Speaker 10: As little as possible, and you leap your decent, hardworking
- 1:24:08Speaker 10: people like me. If you lived in any other country
- 1:24:12Speaker 10: in the world, you'd have starved to death long ago.
- 1:24:15Speaker 11: He's got you there, Dad.
- 1:24:16Speaker 4: You're a fraud, a total fraud. It's nice meeting you.
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: I feel like being called a fraud. Is that would
- 1:24:26Speaker 3: cut you deep?
- 1:24:27Speaker 4: Oh?
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: Yeah, very much. You're a fraud. A name would hurt
- 1:24:31Speaker 3: you less. I think you're a dickhead. Now you're a fraud.
- 1:24:33Speaker 4: It's like, oh shit, I'm found out.
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: He's got your there, Dad. This week a little montage
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: of button Millhouse hanging out at the factory. They're throwing
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: machines or some kind like cashridges or something into the
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: industrial waste or not accounting machines, candy machines, that's right. Yeah,
- 1:24:50Speaker 3: the're throwing and it melts into the in the Wasiste
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: Millhouse is cleaning baptizing to get to work. What is
- 1:24:55Speaker 3: wacky shad? Well?
- 1:24:57Speaker 4: Have you seen the motion menture? Grease? I have call
- 1:25:00Speaker 4: it the end that they have the and they have
- 1:25:04Speaker 4: a bit in the Wacky Shop, which is basically just
- 1:25:08Speaker 4: a rocking house fun house. So they called the Wacky Show.
- 1:25:13Speaker 3: You're the one that I want? Is that they sing
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: that one through? Yeah? Yeah, we just call that funhouse here,
- 1:25:16Speaker 3: I I believe. So yeah, not much fun about it,
- 1:25:20Speaker 3: but then takes away the warning signs solving problem yep,
- 1:25:24Speaker 3: longer scared of it, has longer scared of being hurt.
- 1:25:27Speaker 3: Margin notices that Homer hasn't left for work. You're sitting
- 1:25:29Speaker 3: in the car in the driveway.
- 1:25:31Speaker 4: Why would you?
- 1:25:32Speaker 3: What's wrong? Car won't start? Don't feel well. I am
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: at work, Homer?
- 1:25:39Speaker 11: Homer, why aren't you at work?
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: The car won't start. I don't feel very good today.
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: I am at work.
- 1:25:45Speaker 11: You're afraid to go to work because Frank Grimes will
- 1:25:47Speaker 11: be there, aren't you?
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: Which is crazy talk. You're crazy, Marge. You're off your road.
- 1:25:55Speaker 11: You'll have to face him sometime, and when you do,
- 1:25:58Speaker 11: I'm sure he'll be justice anxious to make up as
- 1:26:01Speaker 11: you are.
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: No, he won't. He hates me.
- 1:26:03Speaker 11: He doesn't hate you, He just feels insecure because you're
- 1:26:07Speaker 11: getting through life so easily and it's been so difficult
- 1:26:10Speaker 11: for him.
- 1:26:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: Yeah, that's his problem. He's a nut.
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: It's not about me being lazy, it's about him being
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: a crazy nut.
- 1:26:20Speaker 11: Well maybe, but I'll bet he would be less crazy
- 1:26:24Speaker 11: if you are just a little more professional in your work,
- 1:26:29Speaker 11: just a little more, then he won't have any reason
- 1:26:32Speaker 11: to resent you.
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: I'll do it to professionalism.
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: Do you think they're seeing him drive off the work
- 1:26:43Speaker 3: was a bit much?
- 1:26:43Speaker 4: Yet?
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: Do you think he couldness been fun to professionalism? But
- 1:26:46Speaker 3: the drinking and then driving off, Look, it's a lot
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: lest episodes where they're really doubling down.
- 1:26:50Speaker 4: Aren't They really are putting other hat on a hat.
- 1:26:53Speaker 4: But look, I don't mind it. It's not a deal breaker. Nah.
- 1:26:56Speaker 3: Now at work and Homer is eating donuts with a
- 1:26:59Speaker 3: knife and fork, trying to be all professional with a
- 1:27:02Speaker 3: mister good employee posted up in his war. He tries
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: to be nice to Frank Grimes and highlight that he's
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: making an effort, but the danger side thing goes off.
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: Frank Grimes is like, what an idiot?
- 1:27:10Speaker 4: I do?
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: Kind of feel sorry for homing here because like he
- 1:27:12Speaker 3: at least he's trying.
- 1:27:13Speaker 4: That's true. It'd be nice for Grimey to meet him, like, well,
- 1:27:18Speaker 4: Homer's going to make three quarters of the effort, and
- 1:27:20Speaker 4: grime He's going to make like a quarter.
- 1:27:22Speaker 3: Well, the thing is with Homer is no one's ever
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: called him out for this behavior. Correct, he doesn't understand
- 1:27:27Speaker 3: what he's done is being is long unprofessional. So now
- 1:27:30Speaker 3: he is trying to at least make an effort. Frank
- 1:27:31Speaker 3: Grimes is like, nah, I screwed this guy and this
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: as you're saying, that's where Frank Grihmes I think becomes
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: unlikable because even when this guy is trying, you won't
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: give him a chance. Correct car Then questions like what's
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: your problem? Grimy, Like what what's what's what's the big deal?
- 1:27:43Speaker 4: As I said, Yeah, that's why they put a razors
- 1:27:45Speaker 4: on pencils. Yeah, that's a great line.
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: Access of double dach year meltdown's have tripled. Well, you
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: ever be fired or disciplined, as he said, everyone makes mistakes.
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: That's why they put raislin pencil That's a good philosophy
- 1:27:54Speaker 3: to lift by, isn't it.
- 1:27:55Speaker 4: Sure?
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: Yeah, they say give him a break, and then Frank
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: Grimes says, I would die happy man if I approved
- 1:28:01Speaker 3: to you, or that Homer has the intelligence of a
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: six year old, and they just fob him off like whatever, mate,
- 1:28:04Speaker 3: you just.
- 1:28:06Speaker 4: Been bitter.
- 1:28:07Speaker 3: Grummy then sees the poster for the children's model building
- 1:28:09Speaker 3: contest and he cuts out all the references to it
- 1:28:11Speaker 3: being for children for kids, cuts out the kid, leaves
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: it on Homer's desk. There's much chance to show this
- 1:28:17Speaker 3: much chance to everyone. How professional I am? He tells, uh,
- 1:28:21Speaker 3: this week the Lenny photo. They have a great summer,
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: so he tells Lenny's and he's gone home for work
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: to work on the contest. And then Grummy last until
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: he sees home smashing into his car. Thin guess at
- 1:28:29Speaker 3: least Frank Grimes is the kick ass parking spot.
- 1:28:31Speaker 4: A good point.
- 1:28:32Speaker 3: Yeah, reduced salary, but good park margin less. Then he
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: sounds from the basement. It says, Genie at work, sign
- 1:28:37Speaker 3: on the door margin less. You're concerned out what's going
- 1:28:39Speaker 3: on down there. March's stop bother. It's high tech stuff.
- 1:28:42Speaker 3: We wouldn't understand. March. You have anylwowre Macaroni and glor
- 1:28:45Speaker 3: on sparkles. Millhouse is now smashing a door and Bart
- 1:28:49Speaker 3: rings the horn. Quittindme durmer those days quittin time? Oh yeah,
- 1:28:54Speaker 3: straight at the door.
- 1:28:55Speaker 4: Did you ever stick around afterwards? Well? Yeah, sometimes I know.
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: I guess I feel home esque sometimes in like I
- 1:29:04Speaker 4: probably haven't put one hundred percent in during the during
- 1:29:07Speaker 4: the nine to five, but if I give him the
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: next like half hour at the end, I'm like, good.
- 1:29:11Speaker 3: On you, creble all the days working to half an hour.
- 1:29:14Speaker 4: You're paying me for this roe.
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: Bart then says he needs someone to guard the place overnight,
- 1:29:17Speaker 3: so he makes meelhouse the night watchmen. He gives him
- 1:29:20Speaker 3: a nickel for the coffee machine, and the brat falls down.
- 1:29:24Speaker 11: So this is my life.
- 1:29:26Speaker 4: At least I've done better than dad.
- 1:29:28Speaker 3: This might be the most relatable Millhouse moment of all
- 1:29:30Speaker 3: time my life. It's I think we've had a point
- 1:29:35Speaker 3: in our lives where we've just gone so this is
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: our life. This is my life.
- 1:29:39Speaker 4: But then you have the opportunity to change it. I
- 1:29:41Speaker 4: feel like you do.
- 1:29:42Speaker 3: Yes, at least I've done better than dad.
- 1:29:44Speaker 4: Though.
- 1:29:45Speaker 3: It's so good that Bart arrives next morning and the
- 1:29:47Speaker 3: factory has fallen over I told you just watching them
- 1:29:50Speaker 3: watch the factory I did first started falling over, then
- 1:29:53Speaker 3: it fell over, and all the rats then go to
- 1:29:55Speaker 3: most everybody touk your pants into yourself. That's now it's
- 1:29:58Speaker 3: time for the model contest and these bold new ideas,
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: these tiny tykes unveiled for us today, could make thousands
- 1:30:04Speaker 3: of jobs like yours obsolete. It's a little slight, but
- 1:30:10Speaker 3: it's true, man, it's true. Don't remind me Ralph now
- 1:30:13Speaker 3: has a male. Basically, it's just a Melbouy Stacy dream house,
- 1:30:16Speaker 3: it is, and it's just he's drawing.
- 1:30:18Speaker 4: Something to melow stay.
- 1:30:21Speaker 3: Yes, pretty good. So not a fan of the hot
- 1:30:28Speaker 3: tub and the media room. What is supposed to be
- 1:30:29Speaker 3: a power plant? Villas Bordella. As you said, who is Ambula?
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: I think it's just a fun name to say.
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: It sounds like, yeah, I did look it up, I thought.
- 1:30:38Speaker 3: But now Ralphie, then Ralphi, get up the stage, sweetheart.
- 1:30:42Speaker 3: Then it's for Martin who has the fancy wanted to
- 1:30:44Speaker 3: be touched on earlier. That controls the room and power
- 1:30:46Speaker 3: in the room.
- 1:30:46Speaker 4: It's in this room right now, too cold, sterile, where's
- 1:30:48Speaker 4: the heart you lose?
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: Get off my property? When Homie comes out and it's
- 1:30:53Speaker 3: just a power plant, It's just a Frank mocksman looks
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: in a contest for kids, makes us miss the contest.
- 1:31:00Speaker 3: Then Burns ask him to explain it, young man, explain this,
- 1:31:03Speaker 3: young man? What does that explain?
- 1:31:04Speaker 10: His?
- 1:31:04Speaker 3: An idiot shut up of added fins to lower winter resistance.
- 1:31:07Speaker 3: And I love this. And I thought this racing strip
- 1:31:09Speaker 3: was pretty sharp.
- 1:31:11Speaker 4: He's not wrong.
- 1:31:12Speaker 3: It is pretty short. You agreed, you win, You did it,
- 1:31:18Speaker 3: Homer and Frank Grom's like it was a goodness for children. Yeah,
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: I haven't beat their brains. They were like, yeah, will whoma.
- 1:31:24Speaker 3: And this is where Frank Grimes just loses his mind,
- 1:31:26Speaker 3: has the ultimate breakdown that we all remember. Are you okay?
- 1:31:29Speaker 4: I'm better that I can?
- 1:31:31Speaker 3: You wish and they get their classes. I don't need
- 1:31:35Speaker 3: safety gloves because I'm Homer Simpson and shocks himself cut
- 1:31:39Speaker 3: to his funeral Frank Grimes, or Grimy as he preferred to,
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: although Frank's agonizing struggle through life was agonizingly cut short.
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: I was asleep. Change of channel March and that's how Homer.
- 1:31:50Speaker 3: The change of channel March is I know a touch
- 1:31:52Speaker 3: up with that. I can't can't remember, but that's the
- 1:31:54Speaker 3: moment for me that I remember watching this with my dad,
- 1:31:57Speaker 3: my dad bursting out and laughter. It's just like that
- 1:31:59Speaker 3: was just such a good mona. Yes, that is the
- 1:32:01Speaker 3: run through of Homer's Enemy. Hope you guys enjoyed this

- 1:32:15Speaker 3: doing that?
- 1:32:15Speaker 4: Yeah, insurance to sell, very professional of it. I was like,
- 1:32:21Speaker 4: pretty I think we folded that into it. Yes, indeed,
- 1:32:24Speaker 4: my times at a premium. But that was very very
- 1:32:27Speaker 4: good talking with Ed ye, man, it was.
