Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / Jimmie Johnson Discusses Making The Daytona 500!

- 0:00I just have such a better appreciation for what many have
- 0:05gone through to race in And you know, I was so fortunate for so
- 0:10many years to not have to worry about getting it on speed for
- 0:14variety of different reasons. And last year, you know, went
- 0:18went well, we got in on speed. But to go through that just now
- 0:21and literally have it come down to the last 100 yards of the
- 0:24duel, that wasn't in my playbook and I'm glad I prepared as I
- 0:28did. I'm glad the team was ready and
- 0:31we had a very fast car. Unfortunately with the crash
- 0:35that took place that I was caught up in and pitting just
- 0:38had us in a awkward position at the back of the field in the
- 0:40last car in either lane and it's just tough to make something
- 0:43happen. And you know coming through
- 0:46three and four there was an almost wreck again and JJ chose
- 0:50one lane, I chose the middle lane and the middle lane
- 0:53prevailed. By the time we have the start,
- 0:54finish was just as simple as that.
- 0:58I have a couple questions here. I'm going to start up front with
- 1:00Kelly, Kelly Crandall racer com. Jimmy, you said it right there.
- 1:06You've never been through this experience after last night and
- 1:09the disappointment of not qualifying on speed.
- 1:11What was today like and and the lead up just to get into the
- 1:14race or to to the lead up going into the race?
- 1:18Lead up, I mean I I started the morning feeling good about
- 1:21things and and we're working on our strategy.
- 1:24We understand what Toyota vehicles are going to do.
- 1:26We know how many cars are in our dual and all these elements come
- 1:29together and you know, very optimistic, kind of light and
- 1:33day. And then as I put my suit on my
- 1:35bus before I walked out, the weight of the situation hit me
- 1:39and the butterfly started to kick up and and once we settled
- 1:43in at the start of the race, I felt really good with my car.
- 1:47I mean we had a really fast car and was able to drive from the
- 1:50back to the front and something just ran through my mind.
- 1:53I'm like it's not over. We have a pit stop.
- 1:56You know, we have the end of the race.
- 1:57Who knows what's going to happen.
- 1:59You know, just keep my guard up. And then sure enough I had two
- 2:02or three different moments that were were quite challenging that
- 2:06maybe put a year or two on me. That was that was that was.
- 2:09I mean, I'm literally going down the back straightaway knowing
- 2:11it's the white flag. I can see the 44 car in front of
- 2:13me. He's like four or five ahead.
- 2:15The 19's pulled out to help me, but he's so far back, he's not
- 2:19going to get to me in time and I'm like, I'm not going to make
- 2:21it. I'm not going to make the
- 2:22Daytona 500. I have to call all of our
- 2:25partners. I'm gonna have to stand in the
- 2:26suite and shake hands during the 500 not drive.
- 2:28A car like this is running through my mind as I'm catching
- 2:31them. I'm like I've got to figure out
- 2:32a way and then an almost wreck happens and it's leave it on the
- 2:37floor and hope for the best and just went the other direction
- 2:39than J car and it worked out. You had Martin, as you just
- 2:43said, but you came on the radio multiple times, pretty frantic
- 2:45about needing help. Were you surprised that the 43
- 2:48never got back there? Because Earl was saying that
- 2:50they were giving him a message, but you didn't have a whole lot
- 2:52of help back there. Yeah, I I needed a pusher.
- 2:55You know, anybody does in that back lane and you know, it's
- 2:59when it comes to the end of the race.
- 3:00It's tough to get people to pull you know pull out or or try to
- 3:04find a way to you And I I I could have used a little help
- 3:08there didn't get it, which is fine.
- 3:11You know we we figured out how to do it on our own.
- 3:13But you know all the best plans that you you set into place
- 3:18before the race starts. They always seem to go out the
- 3:21window when the race is taking place.
- 3:22All right. We're going.
- 3:24To Lane and then Dustin. Please Spencer, catch
- 3:27friends.com. I saw you.
- 3:29I mean, it wasn't an hour before the race.
- 3:31You're up doing hospitality. How do you kind of switch that
- 3:36on and switch that off and and get into the position that you
- 3:39needed to be in to get into the race today?
- 3:42Honestly, I've liked being busy and the more I sit, the more I
- 3:46have a chance to think. And you know, being as busy as I
- 3:49was today allowed me to not, you know, let the weight of the
- 3:53moment hit me until I was putting my suit on.
- 3:55So I do like to stay busy. I wasn't that way throughout my
- 3:58entire career. But lately, you know, in the
- 4:00later years, staying busy has always been good.
- 4:03Dustin Long, NBC Sports Couple things.
- 4:05What did you I know you went over to to Yayley's car right
- 4:08afterwards. I'm assuming you just gave him a
- 4:10pad or what did you say to him? We still had helmets on, so I I
- 4:13shook his hand and you know that was that was a duel and we had
- 4:17elbows out. I'm not sure if it was picked
- 4:19up, but we had some pretty good contact down the front straight
- 4:22away and just elbows out. I mean, it was like being on a
- 4:26short track, but we're here at Daytona and you know he, he
- 4:30raced as hard as he could and I respect the effort he put out
- 4:33and everything that they did to try to make the race and you
- 4:36know, we just cycled ahead there at the end.
- 4:38That level of desperation, can you compare it to any other time
- 4:42you felt something close to that, or something that brings
- 4:45back what you felt tonight? Or is this something you've
- 4:49never felt before in your career?
- 4:52You're so helpless in a restriction plate environment.
- 4:56Car isn't necessarily handling and you're run comes from what
- 5:01other people do you know you it's not like a normal track
- 5:03where where you have anxiety driven by other factors.
- 5:08So here it was just the weight of maybe missing it you know and
- 5:12then what that would feel like what that would be like to miss
- 5:15the the Daytona 500. So that that was the weight I
- 5:19felt on my shoulders and the where the frantic nature came
- 5:22from and when there was an opening to take never lifted.
- 5:25And I I at one point I had the car in front of me pretty good
- 5:28and I was like I think I'm clear the 44, I'm in a good position
- 5:31now if I spin cars in front of me I'm I'm going to ruin my
- 5:34opportunity. So I actually had to back out
- 5:36coming to the finish line just to not spin the car out in front
- 5:38of me. All right, we're going to go.
- 5:46To Bob, Bob Hockers, Fox Sports What happened within the wreck
- 5:49with with Austin and did you think that your day was over
- 5:53then? Yeah, there was a moment there
- 5:55where I wasn't sure who was behind us and I thought I was
- 5:58going to get cleaned out, but I didn't see what started it.
- 6:02I know we slowed up and you know, there's that accordion
- 6:05effect. And as that happened, Austin and
- 6:08I touched and we both kind of wiggled a bit and we almost had
- 6:11it saved. And then there was another car I
- 6:13had Austin, who I'm not sure who it was, but then they both came
- 6:16across my nose. I went across the apron pretty
- 6:19hard so I'm hopeful the car is still straight and and it's not
- 6:23too tore up underneath but that was probably the the you know
- 6:27toughest impact the car made was transitioning down onto the flat
- 6:31but it's drove drove good steering wheel straight so I
- 6:34think the you know suspension all is fine on the car just a
- 6:38huge scare. Sorry.
- 6:40You're going to go? To ride McGee.
- 6:44You mentioned the difference between the feeling for this or
- 6:47the feeling for racing for a win.
- 6:48How different is it then, when you're invested in this?
- 6:51Or when you're a team owner like you mentioned, thinking about
- 6:54what you thought about going on the backstretch?
- 6:56How different is the mindfulness when it's your deal?
- 7:00Yeah, it's it's heavier you know I feel the the way to the
- 7:04partnerships, you know from corporate partners to my partner
- 7:09Maury Gallagher, everybody at Legacy Motor Club.
- 7:13You know, I've always had a sense of team and have have felt
- 7:15that I'm out there representing the team, but this just had a
- 7:18much different feeling of of representing a lot more people
- 7:22in a lot deeper level. Jacob Suhlman.
- 7:24Race face digital, Jimmy, you kind of alluded to it right off
- 7:26the top, but given what you had to go through to make this race,
- 7:32of the 21 five hundreds now that you'll have been in, does this
- 7:35one mean the most or does it mean at least something
- 7:38different than maybe some of the other five hundreds that you've
- 7:40been in? Yeah, to be determined obviously
- 7:44depends on how the 500 goes, but I've never been through anything
- 7:47like this in my first year down here we fortunately won the pole
- 7:52and so I had exposure to racing my way and then but it was
- 7:56pretty stress free after after qualifying.
- 7:58But to fight like we did in those closing laps, just for, I
- 8:06mean, I've only done that for a race win here that it's it's
- 8:09never had that level of anxiety and fight for, for a duel or or
- 8:14anything else except for, you know, proper win.
- 8:21Hey Jimmy. Jenna Fryer.
- 8:22Congratulations. You you talked about that sort
- 8:25of panic you were feeling. I I don't know what it's it's
- 8:31it's hypothetical because you made the race.
- 8:33But had you not made the race and and got beat by this team
- 8:37that barely even got to the racetrack, like, would that have
- 8:39been like the most embarrassing moment of your career?
- 8:44I don't I've I've embarrassed myself quite a few times I don't
- 8:50know golf cart surfing as there's a few I don't know
- 9:00that's a great question. I I don't I don't disappointment
- 9:05would have been really really high embarrassment you know I
- 9:10think we raced really well you know we we did a lot of things
- 9:13right. I was caught up in a crash you
- 9:14know circumstances and dictate plate racing and and I think I
- 9:18could have hung my hat on that you know we really were fast
- 9:21enough and raced really well tonight.
- 9:23I just would have been really disappointed and I think I'm
- 9:25identifying with the fact that you know it's there's a lot more
- 9:30riding on my performance in the car these days than than when I
- 9:32was a full time driver. And not not only you know my own
- 9:38personal goals but then of of being a driver but what's going
- 9:41on is being a team owner and and trying to help grow a race team.
- 9:43So now there's there's a lot more weight on and I I didn't
- 9:46you would have asked me that question this morning I I
- 9:48wouldn't have this point of view or be able to reflect on it.
- 9:51I had to go through this experience tonight to to
- 9:53understand it here on. My right and then Steven here in
- 9:58the middle of the. Next.
- 10:00Hey Jimmy, congratulations. So you in your career have raced
- 10:04in the same race as JJ Haley a whole lot of times, but I think
- 10:09it's it's safe to say this was a pretty unique situation.
- 10:12Were you at all surprised by the the fight he put up there to to
- 10:16get that last spot with you? No, not at all.
- 10:18I mean, JJ is a champion and has raced, you know, his whole life.
- 10:23I remember watching him in Sprint cars and Champ Cars and a
- 10:27lot of different things, climbing the ropes coming up.
- 10:29We kind of entered the sport together and he was a Gibbs
- 10:33driver and you know he's he's a champion.
- 10:36He knows what he's doing, he's a, he's a real racer.
- 10:38And when it came down to it with three laps to go, we're door to
- 10:41door. I'm like, how does this always
- 10:43happen in the duels? Like the two cars racing to get
- 10:45in end up by each other and here's JJ and JJ banging doors
- 10:49trying to trying to figure it out.
- 10:52Thanks, Jimmy. Thanks.
- 10:53All right. We'll done Steven here.
- 10:55In the middle Steven, Toronto. CBS Sports.
- 10:58Jimmy after qualifying last night, I.
- 11:01Had to go back and check to see. If you would ever.
- 11:03Fail to qualify for a race in your NASCAR career.
- 11:06It had never happened. In the Cup Series, it happened
- 11:09once. In the Bush series.
- 11:10And it just. So happened that you didn't make
- 11:13the field for the season opener at Daytona here?
- 11:16In 2000. Yeah, I'm.
- 11:18You know your answer suggests you remember.
- 11:20That but. How low a feeling?
- 11:22Was that to have to? Pack up and go home.
- 11:26That was really low and I thought about it this morning
- 11:28when I was waking up having coffee.
- 11:31I hope that my reflection of it wasn't a premonition, but we
- 11:35were a new the Herzog's helped me move from off road racing
- 11:39into ASA stock cars and then to Bush.
- 11:41And it was, you know, it was our first race together and there
- 11:44was a lot of new and we're building a team for the future.
- 11:47And there were a lot of similarities with the vision
- 11:49then as you know, I'm experiencing to have now and and
- 11:52I went home and I was like, man, I hope that doesn't repeat
- 11:55itself. That doesn't happen again.
- 11:57So, but so yes, I very much remember missing that race.
- 12:01Thanks, Jimmy. Yeah.
- 12:03All right. One final check back upstairs
- 12:04with the press box. Jimmy Bruce Martin from
- 12:08Speedsport. Toward the end of the race, JJ
- 12:11was behind Ross Chastain. Were you hoping to get him boxed
- 12:15in there and have that work to your advantage, or were you
- 12:17afraid that would create a draft that would make it more
- 12:20difficult for you? As a single car.
- 12:23No, I was hopeful to get up in front of the 44 if it was
- 12:26directly in front of him or Ross or and I was really hoping I
- 12:30could get in front of the 43. So that's where my eyes were
- 12:34focused. I just, I just couldn't get
- 12:38there. It was close a couple of times,
- 12:40just the way the lines cycled back and forth and I physically
- 12:43was in a position, but there wasn't an opening to take.
- 12:47So that's when my. For those scanning me, that's
- 12:50when my my voice probably went up a few decibels, few octaves
- 12:55trying to, trying to figure out how to get into those spots and
- 12:57and be in more of a defensive position to to make the race.
- 13:00Alright, we're going to go. To Danielle, Danielle Trotta
- 13:05SiriusXM Hi, Jimmy Reddick wins you transfer in.
- 13:08I know Toyota fans were concerned last night, perhaps
- 13:11lack of single car speed. Does this make a statement that
- 13:14the Toyotas have what it takes to get it done?
- 13:17Are you impressed tonight for the Toyota camp for Sunday?
- 13:21Yeah, I am and obviously I'm new to it, but I I remember being a
- 13:24competitor against them for many years and you know not, you
- 13:28know, they didn't show their strengths and their strength on
- 13:31qualifying days. It was more in race performance
- 13:34and drivability of the cars and I think that showed again
- 13:38tonight. I think it's just one of the
- 13:40trades or it's in the DNA of of the way they approach their
- 13:42plate program. And you know now in today's
- 13:45world you carry a body through all forms of tracks that we race
- 13:50on. So you need to build a car that
- 13:51it's going to work everywhere and it's our first time with it.
- 13:54So I I think last night you know we didn't perform as we wanted
- 13:58to. I know at the legacy MC side we
- 14:01we need to do a better job and then I think as a collective
- 14:04group we need a bit more time with this new car to understand
- 14:06its sweet spot and get it a little better for single car
- 14:09qualifying. I think race time it's it's
- 14:12quite. Sporty most of our night was was
- 14:14not great. You know coming to Pit Rd. about
- 14:18wrecked again, I've gotten pretty good at that.
- 14:21But we survived that. That was fortunate.
- 14:25You know, we lost Martin there on that cycle, but we come back
- 14:28off Pit Rd. We had good steam.
- 14:30The cars were working good together.
- 14:31We were a little 4, little tiny pack of four cars, but we had
- 14:35some good momentum. So we were kind of cutting up
- 14:37through the, you know, the the rest of the cars that pitted a
- 14:40little bit later, they weren't quite up to speed yet.
- 14:43So that worked out OK. You know, I feel like we're
- 14:46probably going to end up 5th or so before that caution came out.
- 14:51When that happened, you know, it was just just kind of trying to
- 14:53determine you know if Logano was going to go behind tie or not.
- 14:57So once that happened, I kind of decided to go closest to the
- 15:00front and you know, host of our Chase and Kyle were in front of
- 15:05me and I was just trying to push him as hard as I can.
- 15:08Carson couldn't really get going till of the last lap or so.
- 15:11I think he was kind of waiting, Gave him a good shot.
- 15:14Him and Chase got together and they went to the bottom and it
- 15:17kind of opened up the perfect opportunity for me.
- 15:20So yeah, just got the cow's back bumper and got clear to the
- 15:23bottom and took it. So it's kind of good timing.
- 15:27No, you're fine talk. Over there, we'll go ahead and
- 15:29take a couple questions here with Tyler.
- 15:32And to kick us off, we'll go to Jenna.
- 15:35If I pay for the nasty beast, two questions.
- 15:39The first one is what was more exciting, the actual win or the
- 15:43time with Beau after? Well, yeah, I mean it was, I
- 15:49mean he's, I'm also little myself, but it's a very big
- 15:53patch of grass there in the in the in the front stretch.
- 15:56I looked out there and I thought I saw him, you know, I need to
- 15:58go to the eye doctor probably. But yeah, he was there running
- 16:01across the grass. So that was really, really cool,
- 16:03you know, I didn't know if he was going to come all the way or
- 16:05not. And yeah, it was a lot of fun to
- 16:08put him in the car and for him to get a ride in it, you know, I
- 16:10think he's gotten to sit in the car pre race few times, got to
- 16:16sit in the shop. But it was kind of nice to.
- 16:19It's probably the most careful I've ever driven one of these
- 16:23Cup cars, to be honest with you, back-to-back to Victory Lane,
- 16:25because he was kind of holding on, but it was a lot of fun.
- 16:28The car was loud and he really, really enjoyed it.
- 16:30So yeah, I think for me, winning, winning here means a
- 16:33lot. It's been a while since I've
- 16:34done that, but to have him make the trek, cross the the the
- 16:38grass there and come join me was really special.
- 16:41And and then yesterday, the Toyotas, we're down on speed and
- 16:45then you come and win this race today, you feel any better about
- 16:49where Toyota is headed into the Sunday?
- 16:52Maybe a little bit, yeah, definitely.
- 16:54Yeah. No, You know, we didn't really
- 16:57know where we're going to fall with this car and qualifying
- 16:59trim. Certainly that was a little bit
- 17:02off from what we expected. But I think a lot of the drivers
- 17:06remain confident going into racing conditions that the car
- 17:09would work better in the draft. I personally didn't really
- 17:12partake in that till late. You know, I saw Martin Drex and
- 17:15Eric Jones working together good in the outside lane.
- 17:17They're able to be pretty aggressive.
- 17:19So I knew, OK, when we get later in this race, I'll be able to
- 17:22be, you know, more aggressive with my pushes than in the past.
- 17:25And it worked out. Jacob Zoen, Race Face Digital,
- 17:36was that a just opportunity struck move?
- 17:41Did you have that kind of somewhat planned with where you
- 17:43were in the pack the last couple laps?
- 17:45I mean, I learned a lot from it for sure.
- 17:48You know, I I felt like I was far enough back on that restart,
- 17:53like I was going to have to really push aggressively to try
- 17:55and be the first or second car in whichever row I ended up
- 17:59being in. And it just happened to be the
- 18:01top. So being the 4th car in line, I
- 18:03was concerned that if, you know, things didn't start happening
- 18:07that I would have an opportunity to win the race.
- 18:10And yeah, just timing kind of just struck, you know, I was
- 18:15wearing out Carson's back bumper trying to get him going and we
- 18:18got together good one time and and him and Chase were able to
- 18:21clear to the bottom and I thought at first like, oh man,
- 18:23this ain't good. But yeah, I was able to get to
- 18:26Kyle, get him back going and then we came together pretty
- 18:29pretty easily on the back straight away and was just
- 18:32pushing them hard and was able to like said had had an
- 18:35opportunity to go low or high once we got clear the pack a
- 18:37little bit and I'd say more than anything too you know I once I
- 18:41got as far out as I did I was kind of concerned about it but
- 18:43they were three wide so they kind of stalled each other out
- 18:46so got lucky there too. But yeah, looking at looking at
- 18:50my teammate, they're leaning the top.
- 18:51I'd say the the Toyota's handle good in the pack and we're able
- 18:54to make steam once we get racing.
- 18:56That's exactly what I was going to ask you.
- 18:57Kind of touched on it with Jenna, but is this a case where
- 19:00despite what we saw last night with the single car speed
- 19:03lacking? I mean, it feels like last year
- 19:05all over again, where we didn't really hear much from the
- 19:07Toyotas until race day, but you guys are really good in the
- 19:10draft. Yeah, the cars just the, you
- 19:12know, they made hats off to everyone at Toyota and TRD.
- 19:16All the work that they put in on this car is certainly paid off.
- 19:19You know, we we wanted to increase our performance
- 19:21everywhere. We also want to help ourselves
- 19:23at the speedways and it's a really good start to see the
- 19:27performance gain and capability increase like it has.
- 19:30You know, it gives us the drivers, you know, just more
- 19:33opportunities to be aggressive and not have to worry about, you
- 19:36know, turning a fellow Toyota crossed up sideways as we try to
- 19:39draft. All right.
- 19:41We'll go to Dustin. Dustin Long, NBC Sports A couple
- 19:47questions. You would talk a couple weeks
- 19:50ago just about the hopes with this, the new body with the
- 19:53bumper and and looted to what happened to you last year
- 19:56because of the bumper, the situation.
- 19:59How? How does this new body, this
- 20:01bumper? What does this allow you to do?
- 20:04Pushing and being pushed now? Yeah, you know, I didn't get
- 20:08pushed a lot tonight to be honest with you.
- 20:09But it it it looked like, you know, but from on the on the 43
- 20:15with Eric, Eric Jones and Martin Trex that they were able to be
- 20:18pretty aggressive with one another and that paid dividends.
- 20:21They're able to get to the front pretty quick.
- 20:23So it it looks like you you can receive bumps and not get as
- 20:26crossed up. So yeah, I don't have personal
- 20:29experience with that, but we'll get together and talk about, you
- 20:31know, our first outing with this brand new Camry and we'll be
- 20:34prepared for the race Sunday. And you talked about the other
- 20:37day just about you needing to to run laps at Speedway races and
- 20:42you hadn't done the early part of last year.
- 20:43And then you felt like the last two Speedway races you had
- 20:47learned lessons and been over go to the front, go ahead and run
- 20:49the race. How did in any way did those
- 20:53experiences from the last two Speedway races help you do what
- 20:56you needed to do tonight? It certainly helps some, but but
- 21:00to a degree to you're kind of erasing where you used to have
- 21:06your limits. Like OK, this is aggressive as I
- 21:08can be pushing and this is aggressive, you know this is the
- 21:10most aggressive that someone can be pushing me without getting
- 21:13into trouble. So you kind of had to start from
- 21:16a new, you know, a new benchmark, if you will, and
- 21:18build. But like I said, just watching
- 21:21the cars ahead be aggressive, the other Toyotas do what they
- 21:23were doing and networking was a really good sign.
- 21:28So yeah, you know, some of it certainly helped gaining some
- 21:30experience last year at the tail end, finally, you know, running
- 21:33laps and finishing some of those races.
- 21:35But tonight just was kind of, you know, we were just kind of
- 21:39in the right spot at the right time, kind of like you saw to
- 21:40Ricky Stenhouse and you know some of these other drivers that
- 21:43have been able to make hay late. You know, it just, it kind of
- 21:46kind of came to us to a degree. Hey, Tyler.
- 21:49So you've now won at right over here to your right.
- 21:52Yeah, you've now won a Daytona in three different series and in
- 21:56three different manufacturers, which is pretty unique stat that
- 21:59just occurred to me. Can you speak to some of the
- 22:02differences in those three wins on both those two levels?
- 22:06Yeah, I mean on the on the truck side, you know it was, it was a
- 22:12bit like that race kind of unfolded a bit like how the next
- 22:15Gen. car races. I was so new to it.
- 22:17You know TJ Majors was doing a lot to kind of shape my young
- 22:22mind at that time because I didn't, I didn't.
- 22:23I mean I knew what dirty air was from Aderlei model racing days.
- 22:28But you know I was kind of just listening to him back then and
- 22:30just doing what he said and you know we got to that our first
- 22:35race together here with JRM. That was kind of the craziest
- 22:38day I've ever had in a race car with all the things that went
- 22:41wrong. I literally couldn't even
- 22:43accelerate out of the zone on my own power.
- 22:46So to win that race was just a wild week in itself.
- 22:50But yeah, for me, in in, in this race, you know, it's probably
- 22:54the smoothest race I've had at a Speedway that's turned into a
- 22:58victory. You know, I think a lot of my
- 23:00speed, super Speedway wins have been chaotic from start to
- 23:02finish. This one had the potential to be
- 23:04in that. I tried to make it really crazy
- 23:06in the beginning, but thankfully we kind of stuck to our plan and
- 23:09the cycle still turned out OK And just, you know, I had a kind
- 23:13of a mindset on that restart what I need to do and it just it
- 23:17kind of all came together for me.
