Latest / UNMASKED with Wesley Farnsworth / Beyond the Highlight Reel: Joy Without an Audience
Transcript
- 0:00I don't think we talk often enough about how lonely
- 0:03happiness can feel sometimes. Not sadness, not grief.
- 0:07Happiness. Because there are moments when
- 0:09things are actually OK, maybe even good, and instead of
- 0:13enjoying them, you feel this quiet pressure to do something
- 0:16with it, to capture it, to frame it, to make sure it counts.
- 0:20And the moment you start thinking about how to present
- 0:23joy, it slips through your fingers.
- 0:25That's what I want to sit with today.
- 0:27Not loud joy, not obvious joy, but the kind that doesn't
- 0:31survive the spotlight very well. Welcome to Unmasked, where we
- 0:39take off the filters that get real about faith, failure, and
- 0:42finding freedom. I'm your host, Wesley
- 0:44Farnsworth, a dad, veteran, author, and a man who's learned
- 0:48that God does his best work in the middle of our mess.
- 0:51Each episode we have honest conversations with people who
- 0:53walk through addiction, pain, or doubt, and with pastors,
- 0:57leaders, and everyday believers who are learning to live and
- 1:00lead authentically. So take a breath, pull up a
- 1:03chair, and let's get real. This is Unmasked.
- 1:11Right now we live inside the highlight reel.
- 1:14Even when we're not scrolling, it's still there, hovering in
- 1:17the background of our thoughts like a low level hum that we've
- 1:21gotten used to hearing. A measuring stick we didn't ask
- 1:24for but somehow keep using anyways.
- 1:26You don't have to feel jealous for it to affect you.
- 1:29Sometimes it just leaves you tired, emotionally worn down,
- 1:33like you're always slightly behind even when nothing is
- 1:36technically wrong, because everything looks finished,
- 1:39polished, and certain. But real life almost never feels
- 1:43like that, especially when you're inside it.
- 1:46Joy, especially joy, is fragile. It doesn't like pressure.
- 1:50It doesn't like being evaluated or compared.
- 1:53It doesn't respond well to being watched.
- 1:55And yet we've turned it into something performative,
- 1:58something to display, something to prove.
- 2:01There's an unspoken message floating around that says it
- 2:04mattered, You would have shared it if it was real.
- 2:07People would know. So joy becomes another
- 2:10achievement, another signal, another way to show that you're
- 2:13doing life correctly. But here's the paradox.
- 2:16The more joy becomes something to show, the harder it becomes
- 2:20to actually feel. See, I don't think that social
- 2:23media makes us fake. I do think it makes us
- 2:26distracted, though. Distracted from our own interior
- 2:29lives, Distracted from subtlety, distracted from moments that
- 2:33don't announce themselves loudly enough to compete.
- 2:36We start narrating in our lives instead of inhabiting them.
- 2:39We don't just experience something, we step outside of it
- 2:43in real time and begin evaluating it, how it looks, how
- 2:47it lands, how it might be received.
- 2:49And over time, that changes the questions that we ask ourselves.
- 2:53We stop asking, am I content? And we start asking, does this
- 2:57look like contentment? That shift is small, but it's
- 3:01profound, because once the question becomes about
- 3:03perception, joy stops being something you live inside of,
- 3:07and it becomes something that you manage.
- 3:10And management always costs more than it gives.
- 3:13The problem is is that performance doesn't stay
- 3:15confined to social media. It leaks into work, into
- 3:19friendships, into faith, into how we live and go about our
- 3:24lives. We start treating joy the same
- 3:26way that we treat success. Something that needs to be
- 3:29maximized, leveraged, turned into proof that we're OK if
- 3:33things are good. We feel pressure to show
- 3:35gratitude in the right way, to package happiness so that it
- 3:38makes sense to other people. And if things aren't good, we
- 3:41hide them. Not because we're dishonest, but
- 3:44because we don't want to be a burden or awkward or out of
- 3:47step. So we self edit.
- 3:49We smile a little longer than we feel.
- 3:51We move past heaviness too quickly.
- 3:53We tell ourselves it's fine even when it's not.
- 3:57Performance doesn't always look loud.
- 3:59Sometimes it looks controlled. Something that I've noticed in
- 4:02my own life is that moments that stay with me the longest are
- 4:06rarely the ones that I documented.
- 4:08They're the ones that happened quietly, the ones that didn't
- 4:10feel important enough to interrupt.
- 4:12A laugh that surprised me. A moment of calm that showed up
- 4:15without explanation. Relief that didn't come with
- 4:18answers. Those moments didn't announce
- 4:20themselves. They didn't ask for attention,
- 4:23they just existed briefly and honestly, and then passed.
- 4:28And maybe that's why they don't. And maybe that's why they don't
- 4:31survive the highlight reel very well.
- 4:33Because the real wants clarity. It wants resolution.
- 4:37It wants emotion that can only be named and summarized.
- 4:40But real joy doesn't always cooperate with that.
- 4:42Sometimes it's blurry, sometimes it's inconvenient, sometimes it
- 4:46shows up while the other things are still unresolved.
- 4:49And when we don't trust those moments unless they're
- 4:51witnessed, we lose something important.
- 4:54We stop believing our inner life is enough.
- 4:57This is when joy starts to feel like pressure.
- 4:59There's a strange guilt that comes with happiness sometimes.
- 5:02Like you're supposed to do something with it.
- 5:04Use it well, make it productive. If things are good, you should
- 5:07be grateful visibly. If you're not celebrating
- 5:10publicly, you can almost feel like you're wasting the moment.
- 5:13So we turn happiness into something that we manage.
- 5:15We think about how long it should last, whether it's
- 5:18deserved, whether it makes sense given everything else.
- 5:21And instead of resting inside of joy, we hover over it.
- 5:25Performance is exhausting even when it's positive.
- 5:29Especially when it's positive because you never get to exhale.
- 5:32You're always maintaining it, always checking whether it's
- 5:35still convincing. And eventually the joy starts to
- 5:38feel like work. And that's when you find out
- 5:40what the quiet cost is. See, this self monitoring does
- 5:44something to us. We stop trusting our own
- 5:46emotional signals. We begin filtering feelings
- 5:49automatically without even noticing that we're doing it.
- 5:51Is it still worth sharing? Is this impressive enough?
- 5:54Does this say something good about me?
- 5:56And when joy doesn't pass that test, we dismiss it.
- 5:59We overlook contentment because it's too ordinary.
- 6:02We ignore peace because it's not exciting.
- 6:06We chase. We chase intensity because it
- 6:09photographs better. Slowly, we forget what joy
- 6:12actually looks like in our bodies and what it feels like.
- 6:14Not excitement. Not adrenaline.
- 6:16Not relief, but the steady, grounded sense of being OK where
- 6:21you are. There's a kind of joy out there
- 6:23that refuses to perform. It doesn't show up on demand.
- 6:26It doesn't arrive on schedule. It doesn't care whether anyone
- 6:30else sees it. It usually appears when you stop
- 6:33producing something, when you stop narrating, when you stop
- 6:36optimizing, when you stop asking whether this moment is enough.
- 6:40That kind of joy feels fragile at first, almost shy, like it
- 6:44might disappear if you reach for it too quickly.
- 6:46So you learn to be gentle with it.
- 6:48You don't grab your phone, you don't explain it, you don't even
- 6:51name it fully. You just let it be.
- 6:54And that feels almost rebellious now.
- 6:56But there's a quiet truth in there that we don't hear often.
- 6:59Because joy doesn't need to be chased, it just needs space.
- 7:02Space to exist without commentary, space to arrive
- 7:06without explanation, space to leave without being mourned.
- 7:10There's a short line in scripture that hints at this.
- 7:12Joy is something that grows, not something that we manufacture.
- 7:16Which suggests that joy isn't found by effort, it's found by
- 7:19environment. And maybe the reason that joy is
- 7:22so elusive right now isn't because it's gone.
- 7:25Maybe it's because there's no room left for it to breathe.
- 7:28Reclaiming authentic joy doesn't require a dramatic rest.
- 7:34Reclaiming authentic joy doesn't require a dramatic reset.
- 7:38It starts small, almost unnoticeable.
- 7:41It begins when you notice the urge to document something and
- 7:44you choose not to. When you feel the pull to
- 7:47explain the moment instead of staying inside of it.
- 7:49When you allow happiness to be imperfect, unfinished, and
- 7:53unshared. There's something grounding
- 7:55about letting moments remain private.
- 7:57Not secretive, just unclaimed. Because not everything
- 8:00meaningful needs an audience. Some things are meant to be
- 8:03lived and not validated. Living beyond the highlight reel
- 8:07means accepting that your life will never feel as cohesive as
- 8:11it looks from the outside, and that's not failure.
- 8:14Meaning isn't built from moments that look good in hindsight,
- 8:17it's built from moments that are lived honestly in real time.
- 8:22Your worth is not tied to your visibility.
- 8:25Your joy is not validated by engagement.
- 8:27Your life does not need to be impressive to be real.
- 8:31Sometimes the most honest thing that you can do is to stop
- 8:34performing happiness and let yourself feel whatever is
- 8:37actually there. Even if it's quiet it.
- 8:39Even if it's small, even if no one else ever knows.
- 8:43So here's an action step for you this week.
- 8:45Notice one moment where you feel the urge to capture joy and
- 8:49resist it. Let the moment pass without
- 8:52proof. Let it belong to you alone.
- 8:55And then later ask yourself not what it looked like, but how it
- 8:58felt to keep it private. That question matters more than
- 9:02it sounds. Thanks for joining me today in
- 9:09unmasked. If something in this episode
- 9:11spoke to you, don't let it stop with you.
- 9:13Share it with one person that God puts on your heart while you
