- 0:17Speaker 1: If it's Tuesday, it must be a Texan Tuesday here
- 0:21Speaker 1: on Sports RADIOA in thirteen hundreds zone. Good afternoon, everybody,
- 0:24Speaker 1: welcome to the program. My name is Craig White, Glad
- 0:28Speaker 1: to have you with us, Happy to be alongside you today,
- 0:32Speaker 1: as well as our producer Jay Herman. Did he get
- 0:36Speaker 1: all the issues is the word I will use? All
- 0:41Speaker 1: the issues resolved in your apartment building.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Jake Carbon, Oh, if it were only so simple, Craig,
- 0:47Speaker 2: Good afternoon to you too. And they are actively investigating
- 0:53Speaker 2: as we talk to you this afternoon. Really, why the
- 0:56Speaker 2: heck my shower pipe seemed to be so squeaky?
- 1:00Speaker 1: Also that all right yesterday now, and we talked about
- 1:04Speaker 1: that last week. Wasn't there another issue that that that
- 1:07Speaker 1: the that the tenancy no you told us about? Like
- 1:10Speaker 1: there was an invitation from building management because it's been
- 1:14Speaker 1: a rough go of late for everybody, so they're inviting
- 1:16Speaker 1: them all down for a reception.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Right, yeah, that's just what everybody wants, right, A free
- 1:21Speaker 2: I don't even know if it's a free meal. There's
- 1:23Speaker 2: there's some refreshments in the in the small lobby of
- 1:27Speaker 2: our apartment because look, yeah, I don't I don't ask
- 1:31Speaker 2: for much. But the h the maintenance man up and
- 1:34Speaker 2: left in the spring, and it took him until about
- 1:36Speaker 2: a month ago to bring a full time replacement on.
- 1:39Speaker 2: So everybody's been backed up. My shower squeaking, My ac
- 1:43Speaker 2: is dying, Craig, is it really the they it does?
- 1:47Speaker 2: It does not keep up, and they keep putting band
- 1:49Speaker 2: aids on it and band aids on it, so it is, uh,
- 1:53Speaker 2: it is patchwork over there. So I'm not so sure
- 1:56Speaker 2: that a free cup of coffee or whatever they're offering
- 1:59Speaker 2: quite makes up for it. But uh, you know what,
- 2:02Speaker 2: maybe it's the thought that counts.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a start anyway we'll put it. We'll put
- 2:06Speaker 1: it that way. But you do know that this week
- 2:12Speaker 1: will mark our first stream of one hundred degree days.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I've seen that.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Uh, some little concern for you there. Hopefully you're ac
- 2:23Speaker 1: otherwise you may be living up here for a few days.
- 2:25Speaker 2: You know. Hey, look, I mean this this is a
- 2:28Speaker 2: very I mean very nice office.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Yes, it is, lots of couches and stretch out space
- 2:35Speaker 1: and things like that. Even in the lobby if you
- 2:37Speaker 1: had to grab a nap out there or something, and
- 2:39Speaker 1: it might be all right.
- 2:40Speaker 2: And they told me getting into sports radio, the work
- 2:43Speaker 2: life balance could be thrown off a little bit. I
- 2:45Speaker 2: don't think living at the office, that's not that, that's.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Not what they what you had in mind with regard
- 2:51Speaker 1: to that. Well, I worried about that when I heard
- 2:55Speaker 1: about when I was watching the weather as watching something
- 3:00Speaker 1: or earlier this morning and watching what the weather forecast
- 3:04Speaker 1: was going to be like for the next several days.
- 3:07Speaker 1: And yeah, I think today's high projectors ninety seven. But
- 3:13Speaker 1: it's only going to get warmer as we move further
- 3:16Speaker 1: away from moisture and by the way, eventually moving toward moisture,
- 3:22Speaker 1: which is that tropical storm Bertha that is that is
- 3:27Speaker 1: in the Gulf.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Now we're only on the bees still the beginning of well.
- 3:31Speaker 1: They save several they do. They like there's bees and
- 3:36Speaker 1: then they may jump to a D or an F
- 3:38Speaker 1: or whatever they come back have they Have you ever
- 3:41Speaker 1: been Have you ever been aware of a tropical storm?
- 3:44Speaker 1: Jacob or Jacob not?
- 3:47Speaker 2: Well, no, And I apologize if there has been a
- 3:50Speaker 2: big one, the big ones we had growing up on
- 3:53Speaker 2: the East coast where Irene and Sandy.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, but I don't think I can ever remember
- 4:00Speaker 1: a tropical storm Jake or Jake. I don't remember a
- 4:03Speaker 1: tropical storm Craig. I don't remember if if there's ever
- 4:07Speaker 1: been one of those that I know of, So you know,
- 4:13Speaker 1: it's it's possible.
- 4:14Speaker 2: It looks like there was a tropical cyclone Craig in
- 4:17Speaker 2: two thousand and three. Okay, the north coast of Australia.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Okay, okay, all right, well maybe they've already spent it
- 4:25Speaker 1: on that. Then I can't roll it back around. I
- 4:27Speaker 1: don't know anyway, it's it's gonna get warmer this week
- 4:31Speaker 1: and then there may be some moisture coming in, but
- 4:33Speaker 1: it just depends on the path that the storm takes,
- 4:36Speaker 1: and it might not get here to the Greater Ostin area.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Tampa's gotten some rain at the start of the SEC
- 4:42Speaker 1: media days, but now the storm's moved away from the
- 4:44Speaker 1: Florida coast, so they'll probably be just typical Tampa late
- 4:49Speaker 1: July weather, hot, muggy, and humid. And we'll be there
- 4:53Speaker 1: tomorrow and Thursday we fly in tomorrow. Thursday be the
- 4:57Speaker 1: day that we bring you the programs from there, and
- 5:03Speaker 1: Thursday courses the day that the University of Texas will
- 5:06Speaker 1: be taking part of that long horn players you know,
- 5:08Speaker 1: quarterback Arch Manning, defensive edge rusher Colin Simmons, and offensive
- 5:15Speaker 1: tackle Trevor Gooseby. They will all be there, and of
- 5:18Speaker 1: course head coach Steve Sarkisian. I'll have my one on
- 5:21Speaker 1: one conversation with Stark there at the SEC Football Media
- 5:25Speaker 1: Days as well. So that'll be coming on Thursday, and
- 5:29Speaker 1: we'll look forward to bringing you that the program from
- 5:32Speaker 1: down there. So Jake will be in here tomorrow to
- 5:38Speaker 1: bring you the program and then again on Friday as
- 5:40Speaker 1: I'll be flying back returning back. So Jake will be
- 5:42Speaker 1: with you tomorrow and you'll have SEC Media Days oriented
- 5:47Speaker 1: things as part of your program tomorrow.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Correct, Yep, we'll bring you some SEC Media Days sound
- 5:54Speaker 2: particularly if it pertains to Texas. Will be on the
- 5:57Speaker 2: lookout for some of that. We'll talk to some folks
- 5:59Speaker 2: who are down there bring it and also coming up
- 6:02Speaker 2: tomorrow and you'll hear it later tonight on Bucky and
- 6:06Speaker 2: BK's program. Phil Steel's going to join them at six o'clock. Good,
- 6:09Speaker 2: and so we'll bring you any Texas related cuts from
- 6:12Speaker 2: that on the program.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Here excellent good idea on that. So here's what we
- 6:16Speaker 1: have on the program today, we're gonna hear from some
- 6:20Speaker 1: who have been a part of SEC media days, including
- 6:24Speaker 1: today the Georgia Bulldogs, who, depending on which you know
- 6:32Speaker 1: preseason evaluation that you examine, Georgia would be the favorite
- 6:42Speaker 1: twin the SEC.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Those who were not.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Apparently those who are not picking Georgia are picking Texas
- 6:46Speaker 1: and vice versa. So there's a lot of conversation about that.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I should tell you this. The actual media pre season
- 6:56Speaker 1: poll of folks who cover SEC football, the actual pole,
- 7:04Speaker 1: I think, will come out Friday, just for the SEC,
- 7:08Speaker 1: not the AP preseason poll or the you know coaches pol. No,
- 7:13Speaker 1: the AP pole will come out in August, usually around
- 7:17Speaker 1: mid August, I think, but the SEC preseason ballot will
- 7:22Speaker 1: come out with the preseason poll of the teams who
- 7:28Speaker 1: they picked to win the conference all the way down
- 7:31Speaker 1: to sixteen one through sixteen. I think most people seem
- 7:35Speaker 1: to think Arkansas will be in the sixteen slot with
- 7:40Speaker 1: coaching change they had and not an awful lot of
- 7:42Speaker 1: talent returning that are coming off of what they did
- 7:44Speaker 1: go to and ten last year. I think, so we'll see,
- 7:49Speaker 1: but they'll have the preseason poll out of all sixteen
- 7:55Speaker 1: teams preseason All Conference team, so they'll have that, So
- 8:02Speaker 1: that'll be a part of it, and that I believe
- 8:04Speaker 1: will come out Friday, the day after the preseason after
- 8:12Speaker 1: the SEC media days conclude, which will be on Thursday.
- 8:14Speaker 1: And like I said, we'll be down there on Thursday
- 8:16Speaker 1: along with the Longhorns and Sark on Thursday. So that'll
- 8:22Speaker 1: happen then. And but today you'll hear from Kirby Smart.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Also yesterday the sound bite here from Taylor Wyne, the
- 8:38Speaker 1: Oklahoma edge rusher as well. Oklahoma took part yesterday. Also
- 8:42Speaker 1: Kentucky took part. It was interesting and refreshing to here
- 8:45Speaker 1: Will Stein, the new head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats. Yeah,
- 8:49Speaker 1: that's the same guy. Was the offensive coordinator at Lake
- 8:51Speaker 1: Travis back several years ago, and he was on Charlie
- 8:54Speaker 1: Strong's staff and has risen up through the ranks. And
- 8:57Speaker 1: there was a sound bite and I don't know if
- 9:01Speaker 1: you have it, jac or can locate it, but it
- 9:03Speaker 1: it and if so, we'll play it for you coming
- 9:06Speaker 1: up where he demonstrates his confidence in being able to
- 9:12Speaker 1: win at a program that historically has not been successful.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Mark Stoops had been there as long as anybody as
- 9:21Speaker 1: head coach and ultimately was given the gate. But so
- 9:26Speaker 1: you do have this, this is uh will Stein.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Yeah, you'll hear a question and then and then his answer.
- 9:31Speaker 1: You're talking about. Yeah, so this this came down yesterday
- 9:34Speaker 1: on the first day of media days. Here's will Stein.
- 9:37Speaker 2: He said, you came here because you can believe you
- 9:39Speaker 2: can win here.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Why is that Kentucky historically has fought against a narrative,
- 9:46Speaker 3: against perception.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Why do you think you can win big here?
- 9:56Speaker 3: This is going to sound like, really, I think because
- 9:59Speaker 3: of me to be honest, because I mean, I think
- 10:04Speaker 3: I know what it takes. I've seen at the highest levels.
- 10:08Speaker 3: I know what it takes to recruit at this level.
- 10:13Speaker 3: And you just got to believe. Man, you just got
- 10:15Speaker 3: to put the ball down in play. There's not really
- 10:17Speaker 3: else to be said. Is it going to happen overnight?
- 10:20Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 10:20Speaker 4: I really don't.
- 10:21Speaker 3: If I had a crystal ball, everybody in this room
- 10:23Speaker 3: would be really really rich.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Right now, I don't.
- 10:26Speaker 4: And so the best determination of.
- 10:29Speaker 3: If what you're doing is working is putting the ball
- 10:33Speaker 3: down and playing football.
- 10:34Speaker 4: And so there's gonna be bumping rows.
- 10:36Speaker 3: I mentioned it in the speech, like I'm prepared for
- 10:38Speaker 3: tough moments and tough times. I have succumb to that
- 10:42Speaker 3: in our process.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Right.
- 10:44Speaker 3: I already do self talk myself about, all right, how
- 10:47Speaker 3: can I stay neutral when stuff's bad? I can stay
- 10:50Speaker 3: as neutral as possible and be very diplomatic.
- 10:52Speaker 4: In my approach.
- 10:54Speaker 3: So that's why I mean, growing up a fan is great.
- 10:57Speaker 3: It is one thing, but I know the players that
- 10:59Speaker 3: we can get here. I know that we can recruit North,
- 11:01Speaker 3: South and East. People come to Lexington and love it.
- 11:05Speaker 3: I mean the longer I live there, the longer I'm like, Wow,
- 11:07Speaker 3: this place is incredible.
- 11:08Speaker 4: It's got everything that you want.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Great food, great nightlife, great community, great university, it's safe,
- 11:14Speaker 3: got big blue nation.
- 11:16Speaker 4: It just takes some TLC and you got to go attack.
- 11:19Speaker 4: You can't sit back and wait.
- 11:21Speaker 3: That's one thing I refuse to do at Kentucky is
- 11:23Speaker 3: the wait. And so I'm really excited about our administration,
- 11:28Speaker 3: the direction that it's going.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Again.
- 11:30Speaker 3: I said, I was so fired up that Mitch brought
- 11:32Speaker 3: me here. I'm also excited about what the future holds,
- 11:35Speaker 3: and so that's why I'm excited. That's why I believe,
- 11:38Speaker 3: or else I wouldn't have taken the job. I would
- 11:39Speaker 3: have stayed out of Oregon and coach Dante and.
- 11:43Speaker 4: Stayed out there.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Yeah. So he had been very successful as the offensive
- 11:50Speaker 1: coordinator there at Oregon, he was talking about, but he's
- 11:54Speaker 1: thirty six years of age, second youngest coach leading a
- 11:58Speaker 1: Power four team. Of course, he was the offensive coornated
- 12:02Speaker 1: at Oregon for three prior seasons. Was the o C
- 12:06Speaker 1: at ut s A at twenty twenty two, and then
- 12:09Speaker 1: prior to that, it was at Lake Travis. And it's funny,
- 12:12Speaker 1: he also said in that news conference, he talked about
- 12:15Speaker 1: the things he learned while being on Hank Carter staff
- 12:19Speaker 1: at Lake Travis and and how everybody knew what they
- 12:23Speaker 1: were doing, and it was it was like during this
- 12:27Speaker 1: great run when when the Lake Travis you know, had
- 12:30Speaker 1: the drive for five and and uh, you know when
- 12:32Speaker 1: they had Baker Mayfield and they had all this and uh,
- 12:35Speaker 1: when they had Garrett Wilson later and you know, all
- 12:38Speaker 1: the all the great players who have who have come
- 12:40Speaker 1: through there. So he uh, he talked about that and
- 12:46Speaker 1: and what a big factor that was. It's going to
- 12:48Speaker 1: be a difficult ride for them, clearly, you know, after
- 12:52Speaker 1: starting off just looking at their schedule, Uh, they they
- 12:56Speaker 1: start with Youngstown State.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Second game the.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Year is Alabama that's at home. Then they go to
- 13:03Speaker 1: College Station and play A and M. Then they get
- 13:05Speaker 1: South Alabama at home. Then they go to South Carolina LSU,
- 13:09Speaker 1: and they got to go to Oklahoma, the Vanderbilt at home,
- 13:12Speaker 1: they got to go to Tennessee, they get Florida home,
- 13:15Speaker 1: they go to Missouri and they go to Louisville. Can
- 13:17Speaker 1: be tough schedule for them, but he exudes confidence. You
- 13:20Speaker 1: can hear that in his voice, how confident he is
- 13:24Speaker 1: that he can get it done at Kentucky. So Kentucky
- 13:27Speaker 1: was a part of it yesterday. Oklahoma was a part
- 13:29Speaker 1: of it yesterday. We're going to hear, like we said
- 13:31Speaker 1: from Kirby Smart here and from some others that have
- 13:36Speaker 1: taken part in sec football media days, We're going to
- 13:40Speaker 1: talk baseball on the four o'clock hour. At one segment
- 13:43Speaker 1: of it with Geene Watson, our MLB insider from the
- 13:47Speaker 1: Chicago White Sox front office. Get is like the White
- 13:50Speaker 1: Sox are in sole possession of first place in the
- 13:54Speaker 1: American League Central as they prepare to play their one
- 13:59Speaker 1: hundred game of the season tonight. Now, let's be honest,
- 14:03Speaker 1: two years ago, could anybody have possibly imagined that? Would
- 14:09Speaker 1: they lose one hundred and twenty one games two years ago?
- 14:11Speaker 1: Something inconceivable like that? Yeah, so amazing. They lost more
- 14:18Speaker 1: games than any team in Major league history. Now two
- 14:20Speaker 1: years later, here they are in first place two thirds
- 14:23Speaker 1: of the way through the season. So we'll visit with
- 14:28Speaker 1: Geene Watson to talk not only about the White Sox,
- 14:30Speaker 1: will ask about the Astros and the Rangers, and the
- 14:33Speaker 1: American League West, the wild card races, and the trade
- 14:35Speaker 1: deadline that is not that far around the corner. We're
- 14:39Speaker 1: inside of two weeks till the trade deadline. It's Monday,
- 14:41Speaker 1: the third is the trade By the way, Monday, August
- 14:47Speaker 1: third is also marked on my calendar. I've been summoned
- 14:52Speaker 1: for jury duty. Oh no, we'll see if I wind
- 14:57Speaker 1: up having to serve, but I do have to report wort.
- 15:01Speaker 2: On on Monday, August third. I'll be reporting back to Washington,
- 15:05Speaker 2: d C.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Yeah, you'll be back at DC, won't.
- 15:08Speaker 2: You catch it up with some families and friends. So wow,
- 15:12Speaker 2: we need the law and order music for your experience
- 15:14Speaker 2: on that.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Yeah, right, anyway, So that's why that date was sticking
- 15:21Speaker 1: out of my mind.
- 15:22Speaker 2: You ever had to serve on a jury. No, I've been.
- 15:25Speaker 2: I've had several summons, and.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Every time I wasn't I think only once was I
- 15:34Speaker 1: even in the pool that kind of made the first
- 15:37Speaker 1: cut or whatever. Every other time my number was too
- 15:41Speaker 1: far out, they didn't need it, or the case got
- 15:44Speaker 1: dismissed or something.
- 15:46Speaker 2: I'm picturing. Who's the lawyer that wants Craig Way on
- 15:48Speaker 2: their jury?
- 15:50Speaker 1: Well, you know, there's there is the there is the concern.
- 15:55Speaker 1: I've heard this before about a medium memory being on
- 15:59Speaker 1: the jury, especially if it's a trial that might take
- 16:02Speaker 1: an extended amount of time. That sometimes can be about.
- 16:06Speaker 1: I have no nothing against uh being on a serving
- 16:12Speaker 1: on a jury. It's a constitutional duty, you know, and
- 16:16Speaker 1: a right and I don't have I don't have a
- 16:18Speaker 1: problem with that. It's just, you know, my schedule is
- 16:20Speaker 1: sometimes it's difficult. But we'll see. We've got one other
- 16:23Speaker 1: thing I want to get to today. Do you know
- 16:24Speaker 1: what today is a Texan Tuesday? Well, it is that
- 16:27Speaker 1: you know what else it is?
- 16:29Speaker 5: Now?
- 16:30Speaker 1: It's that today is National Sandwich Day.
- 16:32Speaker 5: Oh.
- 16:33Speaker 2: I should have known. The folks in Mandan cooked up
- 16:35Speaker 2: something for US National Sandwich Day. Okay, I already ate one.
- 16:41Speaker 1: You did?
- 16:42Speaker 2: You had a sandwich, little roast beef sandwich.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Okay, all right? Is that your favorite sandwich to eat?
- 16:48Speaker 1: If you if you had a chance to eat your
- 16:52Speaker 1: choice of a sandwich, what would it be? And while
- 16:55Speaker 1: you ponder that, I'll put that to the listeners as well,
- 16:59Speaker 1: what's your favorite sandwich? I'm going to read a list
- 17:02Speaker 1: of twelve of the most iconic sandwiches on the planet,
- 17:10Speaker 1: and well, I look at all those and I'm like, wow,
- 17:14Speaker 1: it would be difficult to choose between. But you can
- 17:16Speaker 1: let us know that your choice of sandwich. And you
- 17:20Speaker 1: can do that by texting us on the text line.
- 17:25Speaker 1: You text the word texas follow by your question or
- 17:28Speaker 1: comment to eight one five three zero. So you text
- 17:31Speaker 1: the word texas follow by your question or comment to
- 17:33Speaker 1: eight one five three zero. Standard messaging and data rates
- 17:36Speaker 1: may apply, tell us what's your favorite sandwiches? You can
- 17:41Speaker 1: also do it via the talkback feature the talkback microphone
- 17:45Speaker 1: on thirteen under the zone. The way you do that
- 17:48Speaker 1: is through the iHeartRadio app. So if you haven't already,
- 17:52Speaker 1: all you have to do is download the iHeartRadio app
- 17:54Speaker 1: on your smartphone iPhone, Android, whatever easy, it's free. And
- 17:59Speaker 1: then and once you have the iHeartRadio app downloaded, then
- 18:03Speaker 1: you do a search for AM thirteen under the Zone,
- 18:06Speaker 1: it'll pop right up. And then there you'll see two buttons.
- 18:10Speaker 1: One's a little white button's triangular shape. That's to listen
- 18:13Speaker 1: to what's going over on the air. But we have
- 18:16Speaker 1: another button, and it's a red one with a little
- 18:18Speaker 1: white microphone in it. You tap that button and that
- 18:21Speaker 1: opens up the talkback microphone and you can leave us
- 18:24Speaker 1: a voice message of up to thirty seconds. So if
- 18:27Speaker 1: you want to tell us with your voice, oh man,
- 18:30Speaker 1: I just love a good groast beef and cheddar or whatever.
- 18:33Speaker 1: You know, whatever your deal is, whatever your favorite sandwich is,
- 18:36Speaker 1: you can do it there on the talkback microphone. There
- 18:39Speaker 1: on a talkback feature. So let's hear from you. What's
- 18:42Speaker 1: your favorite sandwich here on National Sandwich Day. We've got

- 18:59Speaker 1: free of charge, the IR Radio app.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Here on the checks on Tuesday in the four o'clock hour.
- 19:10Speaker 1: The return cuts include, but are not limited to, but
- 19:14Speaker 1: include McKean, George Strake in the three o'clock hour, here
- 19:18Speaker 1: from the iconic Willie Nelson, and here in the two
- 19:20Speaker 1: o'clock hour, always from the immortal Stevie ray On. How
- 19:24Speaker 1: about your selection today?
- 19:26Speaker 2: Here's Texas flood, unfortunately, something a lot of folks were
- 19:29Speaker 2: dealing with last week.
- 19:30Speaker 1: That's true, and.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Something that we hope the tropical storm does not produce Bertha.
- 19:35Speaker 2: What'd you call it?
- 19:36Speaker 1: Bertha? Yeah, yeah, Hopefully.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Hopefully they'll be able to get out of that and
- 19:43Speaker 2: it won't be a problem.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Now, Okay. On the text line as well, I'll tell
- 19:49Speaker 1: you what before we get to that, there was an
- 19:52Speaker 1: NFL note or two that I wanted to get to.
- 19:56Speaker 1: First of all, for those of you who were fans
- 19:59Speaker 1: of cam Scattaboo, I counted myself among that. I saw it.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Of course, Texas had that epic double overtime Peach Bowl
- 20:07Speaker 1: win over Skataboo and Arizona State in Atlanta a couple
- 20:12Speaker 1: of years back, but i'd seen him earlier that year
- 20:15Speaker 1: when they had the Thursday night game in San Marcus
- 20:18Speaker 1: when they played Texas State. I actually spotted for my
- 20:21Speaker 1: good friend Tim Healey, the play by play voice of
- 20:24Speaker 1: the Arizona State Sun Devils. He he called me trying
- 20:27Speaker 1: to line up a spotter because his son, like my son,
- 20:30Speaker 1: in spots for me. His his oldest son, could not
- 20:32Speaker 1: make the trip and said, is there somebody recommend I said, well,
- 20:35Speaker 1: I'm dood. He's like, no, what's it? Yeah? What I
- 20:38Speaker 1: was thinking about coming of the game anyway.
- 20:39Speaker 5: Really? Yeah.
- 20:40Speaker 2: You know Mike Turrico spotted last week too, That's right,
- 20:43Speaker 2: he did. Did I heard about that, So.
- 20:46Speaker 1: It's somewhere down I spotted for him and Scataboo impressed
- 20:49Speaker 1: me that night, and he obviously impressed everybody with what
- 20:51Speaker 1: he did in that Peach Bowl game against Texas. Remember
- 20:55Speaker 1: he got hurt last year and he he's also because
- 21:01Speaker 1: he's so athletic, he does backflips and he failed to
- 21:05Speaker 1: stick the landing on a back flip and he landed
- 21:10Speaker 1: awkwardly on that surgically repaired right ankle. And an appearance
- 21:14Speaker 1: at Fanatics Fest on Saturday, there was video of him
- 21:19Speaker 1: attempting that trademark backflip. It went viral left he fell
- 21:22Speaker 1: on the ground while trying to land the flip. So
- 21:26Speaker 1: he as he said, addressed the elephant in the room
- 21:29Speaker 1: and another Fanatics fan appearance, he said, he's good to go.
- 21:33Speaker 1: He promised not to hurt myself before the season. He
- 21:36Speaker 1: blamed the botched flip on the bouncy floors.
- 21:41Speaker 2: So gues me too, kim me too. That's what stopped me.
- 21:45Speaker 1: I had him on my fantasy team and he'd really
- 21:48Speaker 1: done well for me, like two or three. I picked
- 21:50Speaker 1: him up as a free agent. He didn't well until
- 21:52Speaker 1: he got hurt.
- 21:52Speaker 2: I play in a dynasty league, and nobody quite knows
- 21:54Speaker 2: what to do with him, because what are you going
- 21:57Speaker 2: to get?
- 21:58Speaker 5: That's true.
- 21:58Speaker 2: You don't know how long is that career given his
- 22:01Speaker 2: style of play.
- 22:01Speaker 1: That's true. So it was an NFL that I wanted
- 22:04Speaker 1: to get to. Okay, Now I mentioned that today is
- 22:09Speaker 1: National Sandwich Day. The origin of the sandwich itself, many No,
- 22:16Speaker 1: was developed by the Yes, the Earl of Sandwich in England,
- 22:20Speaker 1: who wanted an easier way to eat I think it
- 22:24Speaker 1: was chicken, I think it was, and put it between
- 22:29Speaker 1: slices of bread or pieces of bread and it kind
- 22:34Speaker 1: of caught on.
- 22:34Speaker 2: So not all British food ideas are bad.
- 22:37Speaker 1: No, this was I think back in the eighteenth century
- 22:39Speaker 1: when he did it. So it's called the sandwich, and
- 22:42Speaker 1: so we're customer calling it sandwich or some like to
- 22:45Speaker 1: just say sandwiches. Sandwich at a list of the twelve
- 22:54Speaker 1: not the twelve most popular or iconic, but twelve of
- 22:59Speaker 1: the most iconic sandwiches. One thing that struck me when
- 23:02Speaker 1: I read this lesson. Sure enough I read more about it.
- 23:04Speaker 1: These are very regionally rooted. So where you grew up, Washington,
- 23:09Speaker 1: DC area, what would have been a regional sandwich that
- 23:15Speaker 1: was big there.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Well, the thing about DC food is it comes from everywhere,
- 23:18Speaker 2: right right. I mean you get like the Mumbo sauce
- 23:21Speaker 2: and that whole DC food scene, but really it's known
- 23:23Speaker 2: for being a melting pot of food when it comes
- 23:26Speaker 2: to the sandwich.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Okay, I'm going to tell you right now, I love
- 23:29Speaker 1: the crabcake sandwich from Phillips to Baltimore on the Inner Harbor.
- 23:32Speaker 2: See yeah, I'm playing. I'm playing with a hand behind
- 23:35Speaker 2: my back on that one. But with the allergies and all,
- 23:38Speaker 2: we have to make every food segment about that. But
- 23:40Speaker 2: it is unfortunate.
- 23:41Speaker 1: You know what we're going to do account on here
- 23:42Speaker 1: on how many of these twelve sandwiches you can't eat
- 23:45Speaker 1: as well?
- 23:46Speaker 2: Okay, I bet I can eat ten of them? I no,
- 23:50Speaker 2: I bet I bet you I can eat nine.
- 23:52Speaker 1: A let's see's got to be on there. It's not, Oh,
- 23:57Speaker 1: it's not there. These are on a grander scale. If
- 24:00Speaker 1: you're just talking about your regular run in the mill,
- 24:03Speaker 1: put something that you got in your pantry and your
- 24:06Speaker 1: fridge between two slices of bread. I'm there with you.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Bab's gonna be right there with me. And a toasted
- 24:13Speaker 1: pomenta cheese sandwich stuff a few potato chips in it
- 24:17Speaker 1: inside after the bread's anyway, all right? So these are
- 24:21Speaker 1: listed as twelve of America's most iconic sandwich is not
- 24:26Speaker 1: in any ranking order, just twelve overall. One A Philly
- 24:31Speaker 1: cheese steak, okay, eat ultimate East Coast staple, thinly sliced
- 24:36Speaker 1: ribbi steak, melted provolone or cheese whiz top with grilled onions,
- 24:41Speaker 1: sometimes bell peppers, all packed into a crusty A Morosa roll. Okay,
- 24:46Speaker 1: there's that lobster roll, New England. There's one you can't do?
- 24:49Speaker 1: Can you? Could? You do?
- 24:50Speaker 2: Philly cheese steak Philly cheese steak is I'm in.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Okay, all right, so you're in on that. You can't
- 24:56Speaker 1: do lobster roll, just sweet chilled li obster meat lightly
- 25:01Speaker 1: tossed in mayo or drawn butter for a Connecticut style role,
- 25:04Speaker 1: piled high in a buttery split top button. Lynn and
- 25:06Speaker 1: I had one in Boston at Legal Seafoods when we
- 25:10Speaker 1: went to see Billy Joel at Fimway Park. Okay, yeah,
- 25:12Speaker 1: all right, so that's one. You can't do. Pastrami on
- 25:16Speaker 1: rye in New York they said a Jewish deli classic
- 25:19Speaker 1: made world famous by spots like cats as I had
- 25:21Speaker 1: it at Uh, what's the other famous deli there? Fifty seventh?
- 25:27Speaker 1: I think of New York, not State Shore. Gosh, I
- 25:32Speaker 1: can't believe you can't remember that. It's been a long
- 25:34Speaker 1: time since I went.
- 25:36Speaker 2: But have you were in a food coma Carnegie.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Carnegie Carnegie Deli. Yep, massive stack of hot house cured
- 25:43Speaker 1: smoked pastrami served on seeded rye bread with a smear
- 25:48Speaker 1: of smicy spicy brown muster. Can you do that one?
- 25:51Speaker 2: Yeah? I would love to do that when Carnegie's the
- 25:53Speaker 2: one they're known for, like the crazy.
- 25:55Speaker 1: You're gigantic and let me Also, I can just say
- 26:00Speaker 1: in New York, if you don't want to deal with
- 26:02Speaker 1: sometimes the lines have it, go to Sarges on Third
- 26:06Speaker 1: Avenue between thirty.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Third and thirty fourth. I believer it's pretty good information.
- 26:13Speaker 2: I'll be up there for an engagement party.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Sarges. It's great deli. They also do those massive sandwiches
- 26:19Speaker 1: as well. I have grated clayers on that your classic
- 26:22Speaker 1: great deli Ruben and they say either Omaha or in
- 26:27Speaker 1: New York the ultimate grilled diner favorite corn beef, Swiss cheese,
- 26:33Speaker 1: sauer Kraut Russian dressing pile between two slices of dark
- 26:37Speaker 1: rye bread and grilled until the cheese melts. Yeah, I
- 26:40Speaker 1: even like that better than the pastrami on Rye. I
- 26:42Speaker 1: love the rub The Rachel if I remember has the pastrami,
- 26:45Speaker 1: the Ruben has the corn beef.
- 26:47Speaker 2: And I'm good with either one.
- 26:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm fine. How about a and you could do
- 26:52Speaker 1: that one? Right? You could eat that one. So far
- 26:54Speaker 1: we're only missing one. Okay, here's one you're gonna miss
- 26:57Speaker 1: out on. A Louisiana po boy.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Oh Yeah, yeah, you gotta be You gotta depends on
- 27:03Speaker 2: what's in it?
- 27:04Speaker 1: Well, the classic uh Louisiana, New Orleans style pobole.
- 27:09Speaker 2: It's got shrimp, doesn't it?
- 27:10Speaker 1: French style bagat, generously filled with fried seafood like shrimp
- 27:15Speaker 1: or oysters, or or tender roast beef, typically dressed with lettuce, tomato, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles,
- 27:23Speaker 1: some mass. So you could do a roast beef poble
- 27:24Speaker 1: and I have and they're delicious. Okay, all right? Uh
- 27:27Speaker 1: Cuban yep, love a good Cuban Sands instances. It's a
- 27:31Speaker 1: place in Round Rock went to had a great Ruben sandwich.
- 27:34Speaker 1: I'm trying to remember the name of since, well, Ruben
- 27:36Speaker 1: or a Cuban, A Cuban, excuse me, and uh press
- 27:41Speaker 1: them toast masterpiece layered with mocho marinated roast pork, glazed ham,
- 27:48Speaker 1: Swiss cheese, yellow mustard, and crisp dill pickles on authentic
- 27:52Speaker 1: Cuban bread. That's you know what a.
- 27:54Speaker 2: Great Cuban The old Fricanos Deli that was on campus.
- 27:59Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I remember that. I So you could do
- 28:02Speaker 1: a Cuban Oh yeah, okay, you could do an Italian
- 28:05Speaker 1: beef Chicago slow roasted thinly sliced beef, soaked and savory
- 28:10Speaker 1: aju packed into a sturdy Italian roll top with spicy
- 28:15Speaker 1: giered denera.
- 28:16Speaker 2: That's the pickled vegetable relish or the sweet bell peppers.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Let's see a real fancy you go with, like the
- 28:24Speaker 2: the prime rib sandwich with the auzu.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Yeah, there you go, the horse This one you could
- 28:28Speaker 1: do for New Orleans. A muffalletta that comes from the
- 28:32Speaker 1: Italian quarter, giant big round sandwich, split muffleetta loaf with mortadella.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's that's gonna be fifty to fifty.
- 28:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Uh, salami, mozzarella provolone and a zestiolo of salad.
- 28:46Speaker 2: I love an Italian sandwich, but I can't always do
- 28:50Speaker 2: more to della.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, okay, all right, so that's a half you
- 28:52Speaker 1: get half credit on that. Uh, French tip could do that, yeah,
- 28:56Speaker 1: they say classically out of la roasted beef sandwich served
- 29:00Speaker 1: on the French roll, with a defining feature being the
- 29:03Speaker 1: side of aju used to dip the sandwich into before everybody.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Yeah, but bonus points if you get a little horse radish. Yes, okay,
- 29:13Speaker 2: how about a Nashville Hot chicken. Yeah, I'm a little
- 29:17Speaker 2: whososy on that. I'm kind of tough on the hot,
- 29:20Speaker 2: the spicy on that. But I had one with the
- 29:23Speaker 2: basketball team. They had some Nashville hot chicken. It wasn't
- 29:26Speaker 2: too bad when we were there for the SEC tournament.
- 29:29Speaker 1: But your classic Nashville hot chicken is is really a
- 29:32Speaker 1: burn up your mouth.
- 29:33Speaker 2: I'm surprised you don't like spicy food. You're an adventurers eater.
- 29:37Speaker 1: It depends on the spice. Like I love horse radish,
- 29:40Speaker 1: I love with SABBI can't handle halapenia, can't handle you
- 29:48Speaker 1: know that, the cayenne pepper. That's kind of tough for me.
- 29:51Speaker 1: That would be part of that hot chicken. Now, I
- 29:55Speaker 1: never heard of this, but apparently it's a big thing
- 29:58Speaker 1: in Buffalo, New York. The beef on you know what
- 30:01Speaker 1: that is?
- 30:01Speaker 2: No, and I even have some distant relatives up in Buffalo.
- 30:04Speaker 1: All Right, you ask him about a beef on weck weck,
- 30:08Speaker 1: they'll tell you what it is. It's a local specialty,
- 30:10Speaker 1: thin sliced roast beef, as many of these sandwiches are.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Oh, this looks.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Delicious piled on a kummel weck roll, which is topped
- 30:17Speaker 1: with coarse salt and caraway seeds serve with the hearty
- 30:20Speaker 1: side of horseradish.
- 30:21Speaker 2: I'm not really a caraway seed guy.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Really, that's a deal.
- 30:27Speaker 5: Seed.
- 30:28Speaker 2: I'm not saying it's a deal breaker, but I remember
- 30:30Speaker 2: caraway seeds tasting odd. It's not going to ruin the sandwich,
- 30:34Speaker 2: but I'd probably rather leave.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Them off, okay. And then finally, the famous hot brown
- 30:39Speaker 1: You ever had a hot brown? Really centered in Louisville
- 30:42Speaker 1: Open Faced Sandwich created the Brown Hot Hotel in nineteen
- 30:46Speaker 1: twenty six, one hundred years ago. Features roasted turkey and
- 30:49Speaker 1: bacon over Texas toes, completely smothered in a rich, bubbling
- 30:54Speaker 1: morn a cheese sauce and broiled.
- 30:56Speaker 2: I'll tell you that's something's gonna be hot brown after
- 30:59Speaker 2: I eat that.
- 31:00Speaker 1: You can't eat that? Oh I could? Oh the dairy Yeah?
- 31:05Speaker 1: Probably okay?
- 31:06Speaker 2: So then the probably delicious the final count on the ones.
- 31:09Speaker 1: You can eat. You can eat the Philly cheese steak,
- 31:11Speaker 1: you can eat the pastrami on rye, you can eat
- 31:14Speaker 1: the ruben. You can have the Poe Boy if you
- 31:18Speaker 1: get it with roast beef. The let's see you eat
- 31:23Speaker 1: the Cuban, you eat the Italian beef. The muffle letta
- 31:29Speaker 1: has to be careful with the with the mortadella. You
- 31:33Speaker 1: can eat the French dip, you can eat the hot chicken,
- 31:36Speaker 1: you can eat the beef on weck and you can
- 31:38Speaker 1: eat you can't do the hot.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Brow so well I can, all right, it's just not advised.
- 31:44Speaker 1: I got you. So that'd be eight and a half.
- 31:46Speaker 1: So that should have been the over under for you.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Eight and if you said nine, you went with the
- 31:50Speaker 1: over on that.
- 31:51Speaker 2: Yeah, half good line. And you know what, I can't
- 31:53Speaker 2: count pole boys. I can't eat the true New Orleans poboy.
- 31:56Speaker 1: If you have with the roast beef, you can't. That's
- 31:58Speaker 1: why I said that's the half.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Well the more to della. Oh yeah, that's right, that's right, Craig,
- 32:03Speaker 2: Welcome to my world.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Okay, all right, I know we have some folks weighing
- 32:08Speaker 1: in with that. We'll get to their thing. But up
- 32:10Speaker 1: next inconceivable Here, I'm thirteen Under the Zone, second hour
- 32:27Speaker 1: of the program here on Sports Medio AM thirteen Under
- 32:29Speaker 1: the Zone. Craig Waye, your host, Glad to have you
- 32:31Speaker 1: with us alongside producer Jay Carman. Glad to have your input.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Is where we're going to get to some of that
- 32:37Speaker 1: in the moment. I do want to start off this
- 32:40Speaker 1: hour by giving something to you. It's something we I've
- 32:44Speaker 1: done going back to nineteen ninety eight, so that would
- 32:50Speaker 1: be whatever twenty twenty eight years of doing this, I believe,
- 32:57Speaker 1: twenty eight years talking about is and Folks, you've listened
- 33:02Speaker 1: to this program for years here when I was here
- 33:06Speaker 1: at the Zone the first time from nineteen ninety seven
- 33:10Speaker 1: to January twenty seventeen, almost twenty full years, and then
- 33:14Speaker 1: across town and then back over here for going on
- 33:17Speaker 1: three years. Now, know that one thing that we have
- 33:20Speaker 1: done on this program or whatever program I was co
- 33:23Speaker 1: hosting or hosting throughout the course of these last twenty
- 33:27Speaker 1: eight years, is to give away copies of Dave Campbell's
- 33:31Speaker 1: Texas Football magazine, The Bible Is many call it there.
- 33:35Speaker 1: And by the way, starting next week, we'll start our
- 33:38Speaker 1: weekly conversations our Tuesdays with Tepper. Greg Tepper, the editor
- 33:42Speaker 1: in chief of the magazine, will join us each week.
- 33:45Speaker 1: So we give these away and our shipment they were
- 33:51Speaker 1: a little later in getting them out to the printer
- 33:54Speaker 1: and all that sort of stuff, but we've got we
- 33:56Speaker 1: have copies of it. Now they've been on the shelves
- 34:01Speaker 1: for about three weeks because it came out like right
- 34:07Speaker 1: when I was leaving to go on vacation, and I'm
- 34:12Speaker 1: a subscriber to the magazine as well. In fact, as
- 34:14Speaker 1: my actual subscription copy that came to the mail it
- 34:17Speaker 1: literally landed on my doorstep the morning we were leaving town,
- 34:25Speaker 1: So it was good timing. I got in a lot
- 34:29Speaker 1: of good reading on vacation from DCTF at Dave Campbell's
- 34:32Speaker 1: Texas Football Magazine, and we give away copies usually somewhere
- 34:38Speaker 1: between thirty and forty copies that are given to us
- 34:42Speaker 1: by the people at Texas Football Magazine, in specific Adam Hockfelder,
- 34:49Speaker 1: who's kind of really he's the major domo over there.
- 34:51Speaker 1: But we've been giving away copies for almost thirty years,
- 34:54Speaker 1: and we're going to do it again, primarily in the
- 34:57Speaker 1: month of August, but we may start that final week
- 35:01Speaker 1: in July. We'll see on that and usually it boils
- 35:04Speaker 1: down and we give away a copy of the magazine
- 35:07Speaker 1: every day on the show, and we'll plan to do that.
- 35:10Speaker 1: We'll tell you how you can win a copy. I
- 35:12Speaker 1: can tell you right now. It's going to be through
- 35:14Speaker 1: our talkback feature on the iHeartRadio app. And that's how
- 35:19Speaker 1: you can win a copy of the four hundred page
- 35:22Speaker 1: twenty twenty six edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 35:26Speaker 6: Now.
- 35:27Speaker 1: No matter how you may feel about Texas Tech University,
- 35:30Speaker 1: or Joey McGuire or their number one cheap booster Cody Campbell,
- 35:34Speaker 1: who's on the cover along with athletic director Kirby Hocutt
- 35:37Speaker 1: and their director of football Operations, the magazine is the
- 35:40Speaker 1: magazine is the magazine, no matter what you think or
- 35:42Speaker 1: feel or have with regard to the cover, because it's
- 35:45Speaker 1: still got all the great informations of the gatefold cover
- 35:49Speaker 1: as they call it. The inside is always an outstanding
- 35:53Speaker 1: high school player, and it is again it's the running
- 35:57Speaker 1: back from Richmond Foster. Landon Williams callus Randall. I'm sorry,
- 36:02Speaker 1: I said Richmond Randall, I said Richmond Foston. Richmond Randall
- 36:06Speaker 1: from Thomas Randall High School team that won the state
- 36:10Speaker 1: title two years ago into as a sophomore, lost in
- 36:14Speaker 1: the championship game of South Oakcliffe, the team they had
- 36:16Speaker 1: beaten the year before. And there's people think they might
- 36:19Speaker 1: meet again, you know, So Landon Williams callus outstanding running
- 36:24Speaker 1: back is in the gatefold cover of that. So anyway,
- 36:28Speaker 1: we're going to give away copies of that. Just wanted
- 36:30Speaker 1: to let you know that is coming. We had and
- 36:32Speaker 1: forgotten about you. Just wanted to make sure that we
- 36:35Speaker 1: want say anything until we got the ship meant in,
- 36:38Speaker 1: so it's in and we'll let you know about that
- 36:41Speaker 1: when we have that. As I mentioned, you will earn
- 36:48Speaker 1: that if you want to win a copy by virtue
- 36:51Speaker 1: of use of the iHeart Radio app. And that's very simple,
- 36:56Speaker 1: as I pointed out, all you do is download the
- 36:58Speaker 1: iHeart Radio app on your smartphone, whether it's an iPhone
- 37:03Speaker 1: or an Android. It's a little red button there with
- 37:08Speaker 1: the white heart on that's the iHeart logo on that.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Once you get it downloaded, you do a search for
- 37:16Speaker 1: AM thirteen under the zone and it'll pop right up,
- 37:19Speaker 1: and then you push a little red button with a
- 37:21Speaker 1: white microphone in it that triggers and activates the talk
- 37:25Speaker 1: back microphone and then you can leave us a message
- 37:28Speaker 1: ab up to thirty seconds. Here's an example of this.
- 37:31Speaker 1: Now in the first hour of the program, this being
- 37:35Speaker 1: National Sandwich Day, I pose the question, what is your
- 37:39Speaker 1: favorite sandwich. I ran down twelve of the most iconic sandwiches,
- 37:44Speaker 1: and we'll review that. And here's some other things off
- 37:46Speaker 1: the text line. But I asked what is your favorite sandwich?
- 37:49Speaker 1: So here is a response to that through the iHeartRadio
- 37:55Speaker 1: app with our talk back feature. And again this is
- 37:58Speaker 1: going to be how you have the opportunity to win
- 38:00Speaker 1: a copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine by downloading
- 38:04Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app searching AM thirteen under the zone and
- 38:07Speaker 1: then you hit that red button with a white microphone
- 38:10Speaker 1: to leave us a voice message up to thirty seconds.
- 38:13Speaker 1: This message did not eclipse thirty seconds or cut off
- 38:16Speaker 1: if you go beyond thirty, but it got kind of close.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Is this guy was telling us what his favorite sandwich is.
- 38:24Speaker 5: Best sandwich is a fried egg.
- 38:28Speaker 7: Sandwich is two eggs over medium, not two running, but
- 38:32Speaker 7: a little running on toast and then a little pickled
- 38:36Speaker 7: relish on top. But not just your normal relish. My
- 38:38Speaker 7: dad used to make a green tomato based relish. Slather
- 38:43Speaker 7: a little bit of that on, wrapping the paper towel,
- 38:45Speaker 7: hoping the truck.
- 38:45Speaker 1: You're off to work, toodles, it's a great Now, I'll
- 38:51Speaker 1: slightly just slightly differ with the talkbacker who left us
- 38:57Speaker 1: at I would probably refrain from the relish, but I
- 39:01Speaker 1: would go with and I'm right there with you, pal what's.
- 39:05Speaker 2: His name, Huggins?
- 39:07Speaker 1: All right, Huggins, I'm I'm right there with you on
- 39:12Speaker 1: the over media mag He's got just a little bit
- 39:14Speaker 1: of runniness there with the yolk. I would have mayo
- 39:18Speaker 1: on toasted bread. It could be either white or wat
- 39:21Speaker 1: or sour dough. I would have a strip or two
- 39:28Speaker 1: a bacon on it and a little piece of lettuce.
- 39:32Speaker 1: And I'm gonna have to make sure the lettuce is clean.
- 39:35Speaker 5: Lettuce.
- 39:36Speaker 1: That's my ideal egg sandwich and I and I get
- 39:39Speaker 1: that from time to time, but I understand the relish
- 39:44Speaker 1: garnishment that's on there as well. But that's an example
- 39:47Speaker 1: of the iHeartRadio app. That's how you use that. So
- 39:52Speaker 1: the question post to everybody today was this being National
- 39:57Speaker 1: Sandwich Day, what is your favorite sandwich? And I went
- 40:04Speaker 1: down the list of twelve of the most iconic sandwiches.
- 40:09Speaker 1: The Philly cheese steak, the lobster roll, the Pastrami on rye,
- 40:13Speaker 1: the Ruben, the po Boy, the Cuban, the Italian beef,
- 40:17Speaker 1: the muffalletta, the French dip, the hot chicken, the beef
- 40:21Speaker 1: on weck, which I have yet to try. That's a
- 40:24Speaker 1: Western New York favorite. There and the hot brown.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Now those are a little more.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Of a production of a sandwich. If you're just going
- 40:33Speaker 1: with the regular plain sandwich and you just do a
- 40:36Speaker 1: PEB and J, that's great. Or I used to like
- 40:39Speaker 1: peanut butter and banana sandwich, like that too, And or
- 40:43Speaker 1: like I said, I like toasted piminta cheese sandwich, that
- 40:45Speaker 1: sort of thing. Are your classic grilled cheese with a
- 40:48Speaker 1: slice of tomato in it? Maybe that's just if you're
- 40:51Speaker 1: making me I'm talking about those iconic sandwiches. Are the
- 40:54Speaker 1: big ones obviously.
- 40:55Speaker 5: That you have to go to.
- 40:56Speaker 1: All right, on the text line, some questions. Somebody asked, well,
- 41:06Speaker 1: first of all, the question that CB and someone else
- 41:11Speaker 1: asked as well, is a hot dog a sandwich? What
- 41:14Speaker 1: do you think?
- 41:14Speaker 2: The answer is, Well, if you're gonna think a hot
- 41:19Speaker 2: dog is a sandwich, you gotta go taco as well.
- 41:23Speaker 2: So I think that there's a difference in the open
- 41:26Speaker 2: face nature of it. Now there's plenty of open face sandwiches.
- 41:29Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you're getting caught up too much in the
- 41:31Speaker 1: open face. Now my answer is no, all right, the
- 41:33Speaker 1: answer is yes. But I'll tell you why the taco
- 41:39Speaker 1: doesn't apply here, because you're either having a shell or
- 41:43Speaker 1: a tortilla. Sandwich defines use of bread. If you look
- 41:47Speaker 1: at it and you see hot dog's on a bun, well,
- 41:50Speaker 1: a bun is bread. And if you trace the origin
- 41:53Speaker 1: of the hot dog, it actually goes back to the
- 41:55Speaker 1: aw Stevens Company, which was the concessionaire. Mister Stevens himself
- 42:01Speaker 1: at the old Polo Grounds in New York doing New
- 42:03Speaker 1: York Giants baseball games in the early twentieth century, and
- 42:06Speaker 1: they were selling sausages. And as they were selling sausages,
- 42:11Speaker 1: it became very very difficult to wrap them well in
- 42:14Speaker 1: paper or this or that, or to serve it the
- 42:16Speaker 1: way they wanted to do. So he just took he
- 42:18Speaker 1: took two slices of bread and then later took a
- 42:21Speaker 1: role i think it was, and put it in there.
- 42:24Speaker 1: And it was called a frankfurter, which is a you know,
- 42:28Speaker 1: a northern termin. I'd always remember the Dallas Cowboys when
- 42:31Speaker 1: I was covering the cowboys, living and working of a
- 42:33Speaker 1: Dallas you would go to the media luncheon on Tuesday,
- 42:37Speaker 1: whether Tom Landry was doing that or even Jimmy Johnson,
- 42:42Speaker 1: and you would have a conference call with the opposing
- 42:44Speaker 1: team's head coach, and then medi would ask questions during
- 42:47Speaker 1: the lunch. And they were dialing up to New York
- 42:49Speaker 1: Giants to get Bill Parcells on the phone, and as
- 42:51Speaker 1: they did, the PR guy for the Giants, who didn't
- 42:55Speaker 1: know the whole media was there hearing it on a speakerphone, said,
- 42:58Speaker 1: hold on a second, I got to get a Frank
- 43:00Speaker 1: fur I always remember that off of that, but that
- 43:04Speaker 1: was Frankfurter. A Frankfurter sandwich was the Wayscourt. So technically it.
- 43:09Speaker 2: Qualifies as a sandwich. A frank Yeah, yeah yeah.
- 43:15Speaker 1: So for CB and for everybody else, technically it qualifies
- 43:21Speaker 1: as a sandwich. Had somebody else say they loved the
- 43:24Speaker 1: Philly cheese steak from Delaware Subs? They were great.
- 43:26Speaker 2: And let me tell you, Hoodies in Round Rock Is
- 43:30Speaker 2: that where you're thinking about your cuban earlier?
- 43:32Speaker 8: No, no, no, no no, no.
- 43:34Speaker 1: Hoodies is an authentic Philly cheese steak place to get.
- 43:38Speaker 1: It's right across the street from round Rock High in
- 43:40Speaker 1: that shopping Center there and Hoodie himself has been there
- 43:43Speaker 1: forever and he does a great sandwich. That's where I
- 43:47Speaker 1: had lunch with Bill showing about a month ago. Bill
- 43:50Speaker 1: has lunch and has friends there for lunch about once
- 43:53Speaker 1: a month or whatever. He has a frame photo of
- 43:55Speaker 1: himself in there at Hoodies. Hoodies is great, a great
- 43:58Speaker 1: authentic Philly cheese steak there.
- 44:02Speaker 2: Cole Dixon who fills in often on this show, and
- 44:05Speaker 2: he's been working with the morning kickoff. He says pastrami
- 44:10Speaker 2: or a Ruben.
- 44:11Speaker 1: Yeah, well that they were both on the list on
- 44:13Speaker 1: that list of twelve of the most iconic sandwiches.
- 44:18Speaker 2: It was.
- 44:19Speaker 1: It was on the list the pastrami on Rye in
- 44:22Speaker 1: New York at places like Kats's Delhi or Carnegie Deli
- 44:26Speaker 1: or Stage Door or I mentioned Sargees on Third Avenue.
- 44:29Speaker 1: That's that's kind of in the Murray Hills section, as
- 44:32Speaker 1: David say, up there, just north to thirty Tride Street,
- 44:35Speaker 1: you know, at thirty three. I think it's I think
- 44:37Speaker 1: it's actually between thirty seven and thirty eighth or thirty six,
- 44:40Speaker 1: but anyway, it's on Third Avenue.
- 44:42Speaker 2: So that's that's where. H Yeah, it's on Third so anyway,
- 44:47Speaker 2: quite quite the New York accent working there.
- 44:49Speaker 1: Yeah, well my mom was from Jersey City. The so
- 44:54Speaker 1: both pastrami and the ruben are both made that list
- 44:57Speaker 1: and are twelve of the most iconic sandwiches. Okay, we
- 45:01Speaker 1: had somebody else, uh say they like the Day after
- 45:07Speaker 1: Thanksgiving turkey sandwich eating over the sink. It's the way
- 45:12Speaker 1: they describe it. The best description of the Day after
- 45:18Speaker 1: Thanksgiving turkey sandwich was authored by none other than the
- 45:23Speaker 1: one time LSU head coach Less Miles. And we played
- 45:27Speaker 1: this before on that and it was the week LSU,
- 45:30Speaker 1: I think, was playing Arkansas that week and it was
- 45:33Speaker 1: going to be Thanksgiving week and they were going to
- 45:35Speaker 1: be playing on Friday, and he talked about, well, I'm gonna,
- 45:38Speaker 1: you know, miss out on the Thanksgiving but this is
- 45:40Speaker 1: way he described it.
- 45:43Speaker 8: I am the easiest man to please when it comes
- 45:46Speaker 8: to food.
- 45:48Speaker 1: I have to be honest.
- 45:49Speaker 8: I think it's a I think it's definitely the turkey
- 45:53Speaker 8: with a warm gravy.
- 45:56Speaker 4: Maybe it's the last.
- 45:59Speaker 8: Spoon or fork of food on the plate, you know,
- 46:03Speaker 8: that has a little bit of salt and pepper and
- 46:05Speaker 8: maybe a little bit of the turkey and gravy and
- 46:09Speaker 8: some of the stuffing that would be there, and maybe
- 46:11Speaker 8: just a smidge in that cranberry stuff, right, not like
- 46:15Speaker 8: a big kind of overwhelmed the last bite, but that
- 46:19Speaker 8: right there, Oh my goodness, right, that last bite's worth
- 46:23Speaker 8: a lot. I might add that the turkey sandwich with mayonnaise, mustard,
- 46:28Speaker 8: onions and a little salad at little lettuce kind of
- 46:32Speaker 8: makes makes for a.
- 46:33Speaker 7: Good eating later too.
- 46:34Speaker 8: Done that wish you hadn't mentioned that I haven't had
- 46:37Speaker 8: my lunch yet.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Always remember that, I might add. I might add that
- 46:43Speaker 1: the turkey sandwich with mayo, mustard, onions, lettuce makes a
- 46:48Speaker 1: great sand my lunch yet, so I always think about
- 46:52Speaker 1: that on the turkey sandwich. But I do love the
- 46:54Speaker 1: leftover Thanksgiving turkey sandwich as well.
- 46:56Speaker 2: It's great.
- 46:56Speaker 1: It's great, yeah, nothing, no doubt about it all right,
- 46:59Speaker 1: coming up next and to hear from Kirby Smart and
- 47:01Speaker 1: more from SEC Media Days when we continue on thirteen
- 47:04Speaker 1: under the Zone. It's kind of creepy when you hear that,
- 47:09Speaker 1: and I forgot the name of the guy who's actually
- 47:10Speaker 1: talking about that, rolled me up and smoked me when
- 47:13Speaker 1: I died, But it's kind of a true story that
- 47:16Speaker 1: Willie Nelson talks about and that he was cremated his friend,
- 47:22Speaker 1: and there was some differing commentary on whether they actually
- 47:30Speaker 1: rolled him up or part of him who was cremated
- 47:33Speaker 1: and smoked. Really, yeah, somebody may be able to help
- 47:36Speaker 1: me with that. Somebody else said, did anyone mention the
- 47:39Speaker 1: Philly cheese Steak. Absolutely, we mentioned Philly Cheesesteak. Like I said,
- 47:45Speaker 1: the Philly chees Steak at Hoodies and Round Rock is tremendous.
- 47:51Speaker 1: Can't go wrong with that. And the Cuban restaurant is
- 47:54Speaker 1: trying to think of and round Rock is called Q
- 47:56Speaker 1: with the letter Q Bola b o A. It's pretty
- 48:01Speaker 1: much at the intersection of I thirty five and seventy nine.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Their cube BOWLA. It's been two or three different things
- 48:08Speaker 1: of the past, but it's a really good Cuban restaurant.
- 48:10Speaker 1: They have a fabulous Cuban sandwich.
- 48:13Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, I've been looking for well that's where, well,
- 48:17Speaker 2: that's where you would that's where you could find one.
- 48:19Speaker 2: And as we were saying, this being National Sandwich Day,
- 48:23Speaker 2: the Cuban made the list of twelve of the most
- 48:27Speaker 2: iconic sandwiches. The Philly Cheesteak the lobster roll, the pastrami
- 48:32Speaker 2: on rye, the Ruben, the poe Boy, the Cuban, the
- 48:36Speaker 2: Italian beef, the muffletta, the French dip, the hot chicken sandwich,
- 48:40Speaker 2: the beef on weck, and the hot brown. If probably,
- 48:48Speaker 2: out of those twelve, if I were asked to say,
- 48:51Speaker 2: what would be my favorite, put it this way. The
- 48:55Speaker 2: one I go to the most is the ruben. But
- 48:59Speaker 2: it's hard to beat a really good lobster roll. They're fabolus,
- 49:02Speaker 2: you know.
- 49:02Speaker 1: They sell those at Red Sox games, and now with
- 49:06Speaker 1: the Red Sox having won fourteen in a row, they're
- 49:08Speaker 1: probably selling like hotcakes, if you will. But I love
- 49:12Speaker 1: I love a good poe boy, the Cuban I was
- 49:15Speaker 1: just talking about as well one and I've enjoyed getting
- 49:19Speaker 1: muffle att a sandwich. Philly cheese steak is an obvious one.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Hot brown I've had that once or twice in my life.
- 49:26Speaker 1: That's really good as well. I'm a little bit woosy
- 49:30Speaker 1: about the hot chicken sandwich. I love a really good
- 49:33Speaker 1: chicken sandware, a chicken fried steak sandwich. And in my
- 49:37Speaker 1: home state of North Carolina, if you were to go
- 49:40Speaker 1: to a place called the Snappy Lunch in mount Airy,
- 49:44Speaker 1: which is not far from the Virginia state line, hometown
- 49:47Speaker 1: of the immortal Andy Griffith. And it's kind of what
- 49:50Speaker 1: the Andy Griffiths Show was. Model Mayberry's kind of model
- 49:53Speaker 1: out of mount Airy's a little bit bigger town. They
- 49:55Speaker 1: have at the Snappy Lunch there the pork chop sandwich
- 49:59Speaker 1: and it's really good. So uh, that's that's There's lots
- 50:03Speaker 1: of really good ones there on that all right.
- 50:07Speaker 2: So uh.
- 50:08Speaker 1: At SEC Media Days today, Kirby Smart before he got
- 50:15Speaker 1: to the podium, I think because he was on ESPN's
- 50:17Speaker 1: Get Up show this morning, so he got up before
- 50:20Speaker 1: he got to the podium. He was asked about those
- 50:23Speaker 1: comments that the Commissioner Greg Sankey made yesterday about the
- 50:29Speaker 1: conversations about the possibility even of the SEC breaking away.
- 50:35Speaker 1: He said, those conversations are real. The conversations are real.
- 50:40Speaker 1: He did not say there was a real possibility. He
- 50:42Speaker 1: said he thought that would be far fetch. They would
- 50:45Speaker 1: want to work toward, you know, a better understanding on
- 50:53Speaker 1: on that bill that's that's being crafted to go through Congress.
- 50:57Speaker 1: So Kirby Smart was asked for his thoughts on what
- 51:00Speaker 1: the Commissioner said, and about the possibility the SEC breaking away.
- 51:04Speaker 6: I've actually been saying that for a long time to
- 51:06Speaker 6: our president and our administrators, that you know, my frustration
- 51:09Speaker 6: is I sit in a meeting, and so many times
- 51:12Speaker 6: I sit in a meeting. And I learned this, I
- 51:14Speaker 6: think eleven years ago my first SEC head coaches meeting.
- 51:16Speaker 6: I had a coach tell me, we will not get
- 51:18Speaker 6: anything done in these meetings because we don't have any
- 51:20Speaker 6: power or any control.
- 51:22Speaker 1: We sit and say what we want, but that doesn't
- 51:24Speaker 1: necessarily come to fruition.
- 51:25Speaker 6: So I've learned that, you know, until we get governance
- 51:28Speaker 6: and we have someone that actually has the power to
- 51:30Speaker 6: make decisions, or we can make decisions within our own community,
- 51:34Speaker 6: we're not going to have much control.
- 51:36Speaker 1: And that's unfortunate. But that's where we sit right now.
- 51:38Speaker 6: And if that's the best alternative to get everybody planned
- 51:42Speaker 6: by the same rules, then I would I would want
- 51:44Speaker 6: to do that.
- 51:44Speaker 1: Interesting is thoughts on that? Okay? One other thing he
- 51:49Speaker 1: was asked about the two most talked about coaches in
- 51:56Speaker 1: the SEC in this off season. I think most would
- 51:59Speaker 1: have the two that have been discussed more and maybe
- 52:03Speaker 1: have been in the news more and their comments have
- 52:06Speaker 1: been repeated more and broadcast more. Are Steve Sarkesan and
- 52:10Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin, by the way, the two are friends, by
- 52:14Speaker 1: the way, going back to their days on the Alabama staff.
- 52:17Speaker 1: They've known each other a long time. Uh, and when
- 52:19Speaker 1: they were on the us EA staff together.
- 52:21Speaker 2: So yeah, step and A Smith can't stop talking about
- 52:23Speaker 2: Kaylin de Boor. But that's a separate issue.
- 52:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it is. It is.
- 52:27Speaker 2: So he was asked by do you have the whole
- 52:32Speaker 2: question here with the young lady asking the question? No,
- 52:35Speaker 2: I know the question here, but.
- 52:37Speaker 1: Yeah, well so it was a young lady was asking
- 52:40Speaker 1: him about what did he think is Is Lane Kiffin
- 52:44Speaker 1: a troll?
- 52:45Speaker 2: And then what he said, I don't.
- 52:46Speaker 1: Know what that is, right, a troll? And then she
- 52:49Speaker 1: kind of and then she kind of explains it. So
- 52:51Speaker 1: here's the question about whether Lane Kiffin is a bit
- 52:53Speaker 1: of a troll on social media? Troll.
- 52:58Speaker 6: I don't even know what troll means. People say that
- 53:00Speaker 6: all the time. Can you define what a troll is
- 53:03Speaker 6: for me? Police, I don't really know. I need to
- 53:05Speaker 6: understand that better.
- 53:06Speaker 2: A troll just means kind of poking fun. He likes
- 53:09Speaker 2: to stir the.
- 53:09Speaker 1: Pot yep that's him.
- 53:13Speaker 6: He would say, I look like a troll, So I
- 53:16Speaker 6: wanted to make sure it wasn't defined by appearance, because
- 53:18Speaker 6: certainly he is the adonas of all college football coaches.
- 53:22Speaker 4: But he is very bright.
- 53:25Speaker 6: He does an incredible job of evolving with college football.
- 53:29Speaker 6: He was really good at that with us at Alabama.
- 53:33Speaker 6: You know, he made coach Saban uncomfortable. Let's just say
- 53:35Speaker 6: what it is. And he helped evolutionize that offense and
- 53:39Speaker 6: bring it along and did some really good things in
- 53:42Speaker 6: a day and age when people weren't doing them.
- 53:45Speaker 1: But he does a great job. He's hard to play.
- 53:47Speaker 1: I don't you know.
- 53:48Speaker 6: I don't like having to play his teams because I
- 53:50Speaker 6: know what he knows, and I know how he thinks
- 53:53Speaker 6: about defenses, and he knows what he's doing. But he's
- 53:56Speaker 6: also passionate about his family and so proud of his dad,
- 53:59Speaker 6: and he probably tweets and talks more about.
- 54:01Speaker 1: That on our thread of like memories or or players.
- 54:06Speaker 6: Derek Brooks sending him a text about his dad and
- 54:08Speaker 6: just you know, when you don't have a dad to
- 54:10Speaker 6: share that with, because I've gone through that, you got
- 54:12Speaker 6: to have a group to share that with to get
- 54:14Speaker 6: your like self worth and your motivation. And I think
- 54:17Speaker 6: him him sharing those things reminds me a lot of
- 54:19Speaker 6: times of my dad, and it's like, you want somebody
- 54:21Speaker 6: to appreciate what your dad did, and you don't have
- 54:24Speaker 6: him to share that with.
- 54:25Speaker 9: Uh.
- 54:25Speaker 1: I was looking at George's schedule and at first they
- 54:29Speaker 1: always got to play him. No, wait, Lan Kippin's at LSU.
- 54:32Speaker 1: Georgia does not play LSU, not in the regular season.
- 54:35Speaker 1: They do play at Ole Miss, and of course Lane
- 54:39Speaker 1: is no longer the coach. At ole Miss, they play
- 54:42Speaker 1: A and M. Yet let's see, I know the answer
- 54:46Speaker 1: to it. It's no, yeah, all right, somehow those teams
- 54:48Speaker 1: never play. Yeah, they're there. Remember they lost to Ole
- 54:53Speaker 1: Miss in the Sugar Bowl after they beat him in
- 54:57Speaker 1: the in the regular season U they won that crazy
- 55:00Speaker 1: forty three to thirty five game when they came back
- 55:02Speaker 1: to win. That was at home, and then and then
- 55:05Speaker 1: a loss to them in the Sugar Bowl, And that
- 55:10Speaker 1: was after Kiffin had left, so he obviously wasn't leading
- 55:14Speaker 1: the program anymore. And there was all of that stuff
- 55:18Speaker 1: about how many of the assistants would go with him.
- 55:21Speaker 1: Some student athletes who played in that playoff game then
- 55:23Speaker 1: entered the portal Ando transfer in LSU. That's brought about
- 55:26Speaker 1: legal action with ole Miss trying to recover the nil
- 55:33Speaker 1: money that was involved with that. So there was that,
- 55:36Speaker 1: and in the middle of that is Pete Golding being
- 55:39Speaker 1: the head coach now at ole Miss, and of course
- 55:42Speaker 1: ole Miss will be here on October twenty fourth to
- 55:45Speaker 1: play Texas. George's linebacker Raylan Wilson was asked about this
- 55:49Speaker 1: and again, we'll find out the official preseason s DC
- 56:00Speaker 1: media poll, and what that will do is it'll tell
- 56:05Speaker 1: you who they picked from one all the way down
- 56:07Speaker 1: through sixteen. There are some.
- 56:11Speaker 2: Survey's rankings polls.
- 56:12Speaker 1: Out there right now, but it's not the SEC preseason poll,
- 56:18Speaker 1: it's not the AP preseason poll, it's not the coaches.
- 56:20Speaker 1: I think twenty four to seven has one of those
- 56:23Speaker 1: going on where they canvas there. They're representatives around the SEC,
- 56:28Speaker 1: and that particular poll has Georgia winning there and Phil Steele,
- 56:35Speaker 1: who's going to be on with Buck in BK tonight
- 56:37Speaker 1: right six o'clock. Yeah, he has Georgia ahead of Texas.
- 56:41Speaker 1: But there's one or two out there that has Texas
- 56:43Speaker 1: ahead of Georgia. And so Rayland Wilson, George's outstanding linebacker,
- 56:48Speaker 1: was asked about that. What's his reaction to some media
- 56:51Speaker 1: picking Texas ahead of Georgia.
- 56:52Speaker 5: You really, Joys, just focus on the stuff we can control.
- 56:55Speaker 10: I mean, you can't control where everybody gonna have the opinion,
- 56:59Speaker 10: so I mean you can't control the opinions out here.
- 57:01Speaker 1: And me, we pretty much understand that.
- 57:03Speaker 7: So we really don't harp on over they said this
- 57:06Speaker 7: about us.
- 57:07Speaker 4: Like, we really just focus on getting better.
- 57:09Speaker 1: All right, Well, I'd like to see the pole it
- 57:11Speaker 1: has Texas head of Georgia. I haven't seen one yet.
- 57:15Speaker 1: Like I said, the magazines, the preseason publications, I'm looking.
- 57:18Speaker 2: At all of Georgia ahead. Not that it really matters anyway.
- 57:22Speaker 1: What might matter to him is the fact that Will Mushchamp,
- 57:24Speaker 1: of course, had been on Kirby Spart's staff. Now mush
- 57:27Speaker 1: Champ is back in Austin as a defensive coordinator, and
- 57:30Speaker 1: Wilson was asking what mush Champ meant to Georgia.
- 57:33Speaker 4: That's said, man, that was my dog.
- 57:36Speaker 10: He was always coming practice, smile and yell and try
- 57:39Speaker 10: to make people laugh. But he was a serious dude.
- 57:42Speaker 10: At the same time, he'd be quick to like flip
- 57:44Speaker 10: the switch on your ripe if you do some messed ups,
- 57:48Speaker 10: like if you mess up play. He's pretty much just
- 57:51Speaker 10: like coach Smart. Well, yeah he talk. He taught me
- 57:55Speaker 10: and really as the young guys. He was there for
- 57:59Speaker 10: a year, young guys. But I say I learned a
- 58:02Speaker 10: lot from just little nuggets and football. I can anticipate
- 58:05Speaker 10: in plays. He's taught me a lot since Dannage.
- 58:09Speaker 1: Was Okay, all right, so that's from Rayln Wilson. All right,
- 58:12Speaker 1: coming up some more from SEC media days and again
- 58:16Speaker 1: if you have your thoughts on what your favorite sandwich
- 58:23Speaker 1: is here on National Sandwich Day, here's one. It says
- 58:28Speaker 1: two things. What would happen if, let's see, oh, if
- 58:33Speaker 1: I didn't put Texas in front of the text, would
- 58:35Speaker 1: you get it? The answer is no, because the thing
- 58:39Speaker 1: Texas has nothing to do with the University of Texas
- 58:42Speaker 1: or the Texas Longhorns. It's an iHeart thing about where
- 58:46Speaker 1: it's going on this text line to Texas. In other words,
- 58:50Speaker 1: the eight one, five three zero could go somewhere else
- 58:55Speaker 1: in the iHeart family if the word Texas is not
- 58:59Speaker 1: in front of it, So it doesn't have anything to
- 59:01Speaker 1: do with the Texas log orange or University of Texas.
- 59:05Speaker 1: It's a geographical identifier that is automated. So when you
- 59:11Speaker 1: put Texas in front of what you text, then it
- 59:14Speaker 1: lands here on our text line. If you don't, it
- 59:16Speaker 1: won't land here. So there's that. Also, whenever you go
- 59:21Speaker 1: to BJ's the next time, get the hot chicken sandwich
- 59:24Speaker 1: or just like the chicken sandwich in general, with the
- 59:27Speaker 1: Chinese sauce. I'm not sure what it's called on the menu,
- 59:31Speaker 1: but I've had it several times. I get it specifically
- 59:34Speaker 1: for the Chinese sauce. Wow, You've got me curious just
- 59:40Speaker 1: even mentioning that with the Chinese sauce on it. Okay,
- 59:44Speaker 1: I will try. I appreciate the specificity there with that.
- 59:47Speaker 1: And like we said, that's a perfect example we're saying
- 59:52Speaker 1: about if you have an idea suggestion on what the
- 59:56Speaker 1: what your favorite sandwich is, let us know on the
- 59:59Speaker 1: text line, text the word Texas. Make sure you do
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: that followed by what your submission would be at eight one, five,
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: three zero.
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: Just last weekend, Alison, I for dinner chicken thighs, yeah,
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: breaded with corn flakes. Oh, and a homemade Korean sauce
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: with goju jang. Okay, delicious sandwich, but put some some
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: like not quite pickles, but like vinegar, like cucumber salad
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: on there with it delicious.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: Due noted, all right, board coming up on thirteen hunder
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: the zone.
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: The more from SEC media is Taylor Wine is Edge
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: Russia from Oklahoma, transferred in from UTSA. Now he played
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: for UTSA when UTSA lost to Texas and now he's
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: playing for Oklahoma. Of course oklah home of loss in Texas.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: And Wine was asked, is there an urgency there in
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: Norman to beat the long Corns.
- 1:01:07Speaker 11: It's not a sense of urgency. They're just one of
- 1:01:10Speaker 11: the games that we played this week. They're no different
- 1:01:12Speaker 11: than any of their opponent. They are very very talented,
- 1:01:15Speaker 11: they're very very well coached. That's what we look forward to.
- 1:01:19Speaker 11: We don't look forward to a logo, We don't look
- 1:01:20Speaker 11: forward to who were playing. To look forward to our
- 1:01:23Speaker 11: next opportunity, and we look for competition and we want
- 1:01:27Speaker 11: to play the best because we want to be the best,
- 1:01:28Speaker 11: and that's.
- 1:01:28Speaker 5: What we care about.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: Okay, all right, And Taylor Ryan was not the transfer
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: from UTSA I mentioned at first, I was looking at
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: my note wrong incorrectly. Of course, he's a junior who's
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: been that and last year was a big part of it.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: Had thirty nine tackle, seven sacks, eight tackles for losses
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: last year. That the guy who did transfer in was
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: Kenny Ozo Waloo. He's the one who transferred from UTSA.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: But Wine, of course, is the edge rusher there for
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: the Sooners, who's expected to set the edge and be
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: able to recap it. And it's interesting hearing him say,
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: you know that's not we have to look at him
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: like any other opponent. I believe that a lot of
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: the players do do that. The fans clearly obviously look
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: at it differently. There. Okay, Josh Hipel, quarterback of Oklahom
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: last time they won a national championship. He's the coach
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: at Tennessee. Remember all that business when Ole Miss went
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: to Knoxville when Lane Kiff was playing, they boot him incessantly,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: but they were like throwing golf balls and all kinds
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: of debris and stuff like that. It got up well.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: Hypel was asked about LSU going into Knoxville, and he
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: says he hopes his fan base is ready for Kiffin's return.
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: Certainly hope our fan base hasn't cooled off.
- 1:02:45Speaker 12: So you know, whether it's the grocery stores being fully
- 1:02:50Speaker 12: stocked with mustard or you know, our sports stores making
- 1:02:54Speaker 12: sure that they got reinforcements on the golf balls.
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: Hopefully Knoxville is ready for his arrival.
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: How about that, bring your golf balls to the game.
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: D yog what Devo Sweeney used to say, Yeah, not
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: that kind.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: Of g November twenty first, mark that one on your calendar.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: LSU playing at Tennessee.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: Yeah, my bold prediction Tennessee will be out of playoff
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: contention by then.
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: They open with Furman. Then they played Georgia Tech. We
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: talked about this. Kennesaw State. Their conference openers Texas at home,
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: Auburn and home. They go to Arkansas, Alabama at home.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: That third Saturday in October, they go to Columbia to
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: play South Carolina, have Kentucky at home. They go to
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: College Station. Maybe maybe, I mean, you know, if they
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: pull a surprise or too, maybe if they beat Texas
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: or Alabama, they might still be in the hunt. They
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: get both those games at home. We'll see on that.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: All right, We'll be back to wrap up Hour number two.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: I'm thirteen under the Zone producer Jake Carman coming up
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: in a few minutes. We'll visit with Gene Watson, are
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: m l B Insider player personnel for the Chicago White Sox,
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: the first place in the American League Central Chicago White
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: Sox who hammered the Texas Rangers last time. It was
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: just a five to three game going into the ninth
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: and then they just blew it open there and won
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: that contest. So the White Sox continued to amaze and
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: surprise people. But since Gino is involved, I guess I
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: shouldn't be surprised. Like we said, his track record shows
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: he's got the Midas touch with a lot of that.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: Either that or fabulous timing on when he joins an organization.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: I happen to think it's more of the former than
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: the latter. But we'll visit with him. The talks of
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: Major League Baseball coming up all right, But we hadn't
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: had a chance to mention this and it kind of
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: kind of seeped out yesterday. I think John Rostein CBS
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: Sports put it out there, and I guess he found
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: out either from Frost Bank Center in San Antonio or
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: Baylor or Texas are all three that the long wornvent's
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: basketball team is going to play the Baylor Bears a
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: non conference this year. It'll be the first time they've
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: done that ever as a non conference school, and they're
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: going to play them in San Antonio on Sunday, November
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: fifteenth in the Frost Bank Center. If you're keeping track
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: of all of this, that would be the day after
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: the LSU game football game. So if you're planning on
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: going to Baton Rouge, first of all, good luck on
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: trying to get a ticket. From what I understand, tickets
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: themselves are hard enough to come by for virtually any
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: game there in Death Valley. And I've read something else today,
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: and we've heard obviously, you know Kirby Smarts comments about
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: lange Kiffin earlier, and here's lange Kiffin taken over at LSU.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: One of the things he's done right away is to
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: alter the schedule a little bit in the future. It
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: was announced this morning, I think that or yesterday, that
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: LSU is opting out is the best way to describe it.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: I guess of a contracted home and home the Tigers
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: have with Arizona State, I think in twenty nine and thirty.
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: I think twenty twenty nine and twenty thirty, and I
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: think I probably need to check this. Did Texas also
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: opt out of it's deal with the Arizona State or today?
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: Are they still scheduled play them? I think in thirty
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: and thirty one. Maybe we'll check that and see. But
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: LSU has opted out of that that series.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: Yeah, in Texas back in February canceled the year. I
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: thought so.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: I thought so when they found out that they were
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: going to a nine game conference schedule. Now Notre Dame
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: is still on the schedule, I believe. For was it
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: twenty eight and twenty nine maybe, or is it twenty
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: seven and twenty eight extra in the year after I
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: thought that, I think it's twenty eight and twenty nine.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: Because Michigan's coming to Boston next year, it's twenty eight
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: and twenty nine. Yeah, And for the time being, that game,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: that home and home is still on the schedule. Okay,
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: So that's one layer peeled back and we're working it
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: back forward to what originally started with. But with LSU,
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: they opted out of the home and home with Arizona
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: State and they announced four non conference games. I think
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: it's twenty eight, twenty nine, thirty and thirty one. I
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: think they might have done. But anyway, it's four in
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: state non conference opponents. I believe the rotation goes Northwestern State,
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: which in case you didn't know, is in Naktish Louisiana,
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: Southern Tulane, and there's one other one. It might be
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: Louisiana Lafayette. It might be University of Louisiana. I don't know.
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: They usually hesitate to play them, but there's because there
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: was a really nasty thing about University of the Louisiana
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: and LSU and all that other kind of stuff. But
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: they are scheduled to play four in state non conference
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: opponents coming up in a four year stretch. I read
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: it this morning, and I know Tulane and Southern and
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: Northwestern State are three of the four. I didn't and
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: I'm trying to remember who the fourth one was out
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: of that.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: Not Prairie View, A and M.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: Well, if they announced Prairie View, that that would be
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: a fourth non conference but Prairie View, of course is
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: a school in Texas. I thought I read it was
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: four schools in Louisiana, but that could be wrong. Maybe
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: the fourth one I read was prairie View, But of
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: course Prairieview is in Prairieview, Texas, near Waller, and it's
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: between Brenham and Hugh they're off to ninety. But there
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: was a thing announced about it. But in any event,
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: LSU was opted out of that. And as I started
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: to say, tickets are difficult enough to get to any
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: LSU home game, even against whatever, a prairie View or
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: a Southern or you know whoever, a Northwestern state, you know,
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: whoever it is, those are difficult enough to come by.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: But you add and then the next tier would be
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: conference opponents, which would be difficult, whether it's Ole miss
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: or Alabama or Mississippi State or whoever. And then of
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: course Texas. So there's all of that. I was not
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: that I needed reminding of this, but I got a
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: pretty clear and present reminder of it when I was
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: perusing air travel to Baton Rouge for the football game.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: Now this was on back. It was well over a
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: month ago, so we were still talking about because the
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: game's November fourteenth, so we're talking about almost six months
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: in advance, and it was almost impossible to book a
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: plane ticket to Baton Rouge, even like almost six months,
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: almost six months out from the game. Almost impossible, in fact,
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: so inconvenient and expensive. By the way, that myself, Roger
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: Wallace and Will Matthews your broadcast announced team will not
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: be flying in the Baton Rouge. Will be flying in
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: the Lafayette, which is an hour west of Baton Rouge.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: But that's okay, not to be.
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: Confused with West Lafayette.
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: No, that's in Indiana. Lafayette is a school in Pennsylvania
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: or a town in Indiana. Lalafayette isn't in is in Louisiana,
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: and they will and they will tell you that as well.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: But yeah, we'll fly to the Lafayette and drive it's
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: fifty five miles over. I mean last year we had
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: to fly in the Cincinnati for the Kentucky game and
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: drive the eighty miles. Of course, the crazy one was
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: when we had to fly had to get off the
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: plane at O'Hare in Chicago with our connecting flight have
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: n't been canceled to go to the Ohio State game
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: and drive seven hours from O'Hare to Columbus. That was
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: that was some lengthy driving. But yeah, so that anyway,
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: it's it's going to be a challenge, a bit of
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: a challenge there off of that. So the day after
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: that football game, the long worn basketball team is going
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: to play Baylor and they're going to play their neutral site.
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: It's the San Antonio Hoops Showdown. I can tell you this.
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: Baylor was not the original opponent, but it worked out well.
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: There was supposed to be. There was kind of an
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: agreement in place for them to do a home and
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: home or a neutral home and home if you will,
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: with Ohio State, like play San Antonio this year, Cleveland
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: the next year. Maybe that workout. So while the up
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: being Baylor and they'll play Baylor on Sunday, November fifteenth,
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: The tip time and the television network coverage will be
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: announced in the coming weeks. So there it is. Tickets,
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: by the way, will go on sale October first, with
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: a one day pre sale taking place the day prior,
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: and there's a website is at Frost Bank Center to
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: find out about it under their events. So Texas and
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: Baylor will be playing, and Texas has played Baylor more
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: than any other opponent. This will be the two hundred
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: and sixty fourth all time meeting with the schools. Texas
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: holds the overall seriesly won sixty five to ninety eight.
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: Baylor was texas first opponent and their inaugural nineteen oh
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: six basketball season. Texas won that game twenty seven to seventeen.
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: They played Baylor four times a year and won it,
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: so they're the most common opponent in program history for Texas.
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: So Texas and Baylor will meet on Sunday, November fifteenth.
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: All right, coming up next, we'll talk baseball. Will visit
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: with Gene Watson, our MLB insider from the Chicago White
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: Sox Front Office. We'll do that coming up next right
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone and
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: on the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: It's the Craig Way shot with the voice of the
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: Texas Longhorns in Hall of Fame broadcast, Craig.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: We continue here on a Texan Tuesday. And there's no
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: better truer Texan, native Texan I know than our weekly friend,
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: guest panelist, contributor MLB Insider Temple, Texas Bell County native
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: Gene Watson of the Chicago White Sox Front Office. Join.
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: When was the last time you were in Bell County?
- 1:13:54Speaker 5: It's been a minute, It's at least six months to
- 1:13:59Speaker 5: a year.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:14:01Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, well, yeah, we don't get there much, not many.
- 1:14:04Speaker 9: We are having a forty year reunion in September for
- 1:14:07Speaker 9: the eighty six Temple Wildcat, so that'll be a lot
- 1:14:09Speaker 9: of fun.
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: Okay, all right, that'll be cool. And when you played
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: football at Temple, you played what position?
- 1:14:16Speaker 5: I played center? Guard and tackle.
- 1:14:19Speaker 9: I sat on the center of the bench, got the
- 1:14:21Speaker 9: water bucket and tackled.
- 1:14:22Speaker 5: Anybody tried to see it there.
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: Yeah, go well, I remember, I remember the first time
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: I ever heard the phrase. I think it was Tom
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: Penders who said it during a basketball so he's somedoy
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: guy said, yeah, he guards the gatorade when he was
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: joking about that.
- 1:14:36Speaker 9: Yeah, okay, all right, I did have I did have
- 1:14:38Speaker 9: an all State center in front of me, so that
- 1:14:41Speaker 9: that's my excuse.
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: Okay, Well, and hey, listen, you got to proudly wear
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: what is it? It's it's blue front white back the jersey, correct,
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: the blue.
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: Front white back.
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: Yeah, magic, yeah, yeah, that is something else. And we
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: are getting closer to uh to the start of football season.
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: I promise Geno a copy of Dave Campbells Texas Football
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: Magazine whenever we can cross pass again on this right Now, however,
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: I got to ask you Patch your ball club. You
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: know you are now about to play your ball club.
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: The Chicago White Sox are about to play their one
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: hundredth game of the season, one hundredth game of this season.
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: And here they are. Here are the White Sox at
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: fifty three and forty six.
- 1:15:31Speaker 5: Here are the.
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: White Sox seven above the five hundred mark, and tonight
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: playing their one hundredth game of the season, and they
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: have one game lead on the Cleveland Guardians and five
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: on the Twins and six and a half on the
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: Tigers in the American League Central. We continue to talk
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: about how unexpected folks have found this to be. And
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: I understand all that you've been there from the building
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: of the start of it. What has impressed you the
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: most about your guys getting to this point where here
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: you are getting ready to play game number one hundred
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: and you're sitting in first place.
- 1:16:08Speaker 9: Well, Craig, I think I think most of it is.
- 1:16:10Speaker 9: You know, you hear a lot of dialogue in the game,
- 1:16:13Speaker 9: like people report the spring training and every all thirty
- 1:16:17Speaker 9: locker rooms are saying the same thing.
- 1:16:19Speaker 5: You know, why not us?
- 1:16:20Speaker 9: You know we're going to shock the world, and it's
- 1:16:23Speaker 9: one thing to say those things. It's another to go
- 1:16:25Speaker 9: out and actually do it. And I think it begins
- 1:16:27Speaker 9: with the leadership with Will Venable and his coaching staff,
- 1:16:31Speaker 9: and the attitude and the belief that he's instilled in
- 1:16:35Speaker 9: the twenty six man roster, the style of play that
- 1:16:38Speaker 9: they bring to the ballpark every day, because again, you
- 1:16:41Speaker 9: can say hard nineties, but you got to have a
- 1:16:43Speaker 9: group that buys into it, and our guys run every
- 1:16:46Speaker 9: ball out as hard as they can. You can say
- 1:16:48Speaker 9: we're going to play a style of play where we
- 1:16:50Speaker 9: put the ball in motion and put the game in
- 1:16:52Speaker 9: motion and bond and steel and hit and run, but
- 1:16:54Speaker 9: it's another thing to get players.
- 1:16:55Speaker 5: To execute it. And Will and his staff have done
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: all of those things.
- 1:16:59Speaker 9: And when you when you couple that with twenty six
- 1:17:02Speaker 9: guys that don't know any better, you get what we've gotten.
- 1:17:05Speaker 9: And it's been a lot of fun, and we're just
- 1:17:08Speaker 9: enjoying every bit of It's the most fun I've ever
- 1:17:10Speaker 9: had in the game for what the expectations were coming
- 1:17:13Speaker 9: into the season and what they've been, and it's certainly
- 1:17:15Speaker 9: raised our sights to what we hope to do the
- 1:17:18Speaker 9: next couple of.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: Weeks have I've never asked you this, but I am curious. Now,
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: can you describe Will Venables? I don't know if personality
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: is the right word, but he's demeanor and his day
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: to day and what he's like as a matter. You know,
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: we have the point where we know what some manager's
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: personalities are like. We know what Aaron Boone's personality is like.
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: We know what Terry Francona's personality is like, even Dave Roberts.
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: We know that Pat Murphy. We've gotten to know quite
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: a bit more in some regions. Tell us about Will
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: Venable the person and the personality makeup of this guy.
- 1:17:52Speaker 9: Well, you know the thing about that chair is sometimes
- 1:17:55Speaker 9: people will change to fit what they believe the personality
- 1:17:59Speaker 9: of the chair needs to be. Tough persona, almost angry
- 1:18:03Speaker 9: a lot. You know, they start, you know, yelling at
- 1:18:06Speaker 9: umpires and fighting with umpires so like like you're protecting
- 1:18:09Speaker 9: your team. And the one thing I will say about
- 1:18:11Speaker 9: Will is he is the same guy today as he
- 1:18:14Speaker 9: was when I saw him play in Careen and a
- 1:18:17Speaker 9: ball and just a super intelligent person first of all,
- 1:18:21Speaker 9: but played at Princeton basketball baseball.
- 1:18:25Speaker 5: Star, very low key.
- 1:18:27Speaker 9: I think laid back California would be the best phrase
- 1:18:30Speaker 9: you could use. But just so thoughtful with people, so
- 1:18:35Speaker 9: thought the way he presents and players have a great
- 1:18:39Speaker 9: deal of respect for him, you know, for what his
- 1:18:41Speaker 9: playing career was. He was an elite defender in center
- 1:18:44Speaker 9: field that played the game the right way. His father
- 1:18:46Speaker 9: played in the big leagues, Maximenable, and so he's just
- 1:18:49Speaker 9: been a tremendous, tremendous leader for this organization in this
- 1:18:53Speaker 9: twenty six man roster.
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: How much does you just mentioned his dad, Max Vna Ball,
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: I remember when he played played with the Reds among
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: other teams. How much does being a legacy of a
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: former big league player or manager even get into this?
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: I think I think about Aaron Boone, and I think
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: about Bob Boone, and I think about even his dad
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: before him as well. I mean the the family tree there.
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: How much does that make a difference in how a
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: guy ultimately can succeed or at least exhibit what he
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: can do as a big league manager.
- 1:19:28Speaker 9: I think it's incredible, not only as a as a
- 1:19:30Speaker 9: manager or a coach, but as a player. Because the
- 1:19:33Speaker 9: car rides to and from the games are just a
- 1:19:35Speaker 9: little bit different the car rides to and from. You know,
- 1:19:38Speaker 9: when you're when your dad's a coach or manager and
- 1:19:41Speaker 9: you're growing up in the clubhouse, are just a little
- 1:19:43Speaker 9: bit different than the than the common person, and so
- 1:19:46Speaker 9: you know, the rolodecks, the learning rolodex goes back so
- 1:19:50Speaker 9: much further. You know, our third base coach, Justin Jerseley's dad,
- 1:19:54Speaker 9: Mike Jershley, was our third base coach during the back
- 1:19:57Speaker 9: to back World Series in Kansas City, and us was
- 1:20:00Speaker 9: a young man in middle school and high school that
- 1:20:03Speaker 9: you know, he was on the plane rides, he was
- 1:20:05Speaker 9: in the meetings, he's shagging BP and so you just
- 1:20:08Speaker 9: get that higher education of the day to day and
- 1:20:10Speaker 9: you're learning so much more at a much rapid pace
- 1:20:13Speaker 9: than if someone that doesn't have that.
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: Talk a Major League Baseball with Geen Watson here on
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: thirteen hundreds, and I'm going to keep it in the
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: American League Central and ask you about the Guardians, in
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: part because we have a diagnoble Guardians fan who routinely
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: texts the program and interested in your thoughts on them.
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: They hit seven home runs last night and their win
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: of the twins. They're one game back. I know Tanner.
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: Bobby hasn't had quite the season he's won and he's
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: four and nine right now, but it got the win
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: last night. But what's your makeup to this point as
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: they just crested the one hundred game part of the season,
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: they're at fifty three and forty eight. Your thoughts on the.
- 1:20:46Speaker 9: Guardians Just a special organization with the way they do things.
- 1:20:51Speaker 9: They know who they are is or organization. They have
- 1:20:55Speaker 9: a profile that they they reach on the mound with
- 1:20:58Speaker 9: their pitchers and Carl Willis is arguably the best pitching
- 1:21:01Speaker 9: coach in.
- 1:21:01Speaker 5: All of baseball.
- 1:21:03Speaker 9: You know, they have a lot of undersized players that
- 1:21:06Speaker 9: are super talented, super tool that out and just they
- 1:21:10Speaker 9: just play.
- 1:21:10Speaker 5: Game the right way. They play so hard and they're
- 1:21:13Speaker 5: they're going to.
- 1:21:13Speaker 9: Be very difficult to shake the entire season because they've
- 1:21:18Speaker 9: been there before many times and we have it and
- 1:21:20Speaker 9: so it's got to be sometimes that we have to overcome.
- 1:21:23Speaker 9: But they're gonna get Jay Ram back pretty soon, They're
- 1:21:25Speaker 9: going to get some of their injured players back, and
- 1:21:28Speaker 9: they're going to be a force to recond. If they've
- 1:21:29Speaker 9: got a very good minor league system, they can go
- 1:21:32Speaker 9: out and make the trades they need to make. They're
- 1:21:34Speaker 9: very creative in the front office, and they are truly
- 1:21:38Speaker 9: one of the model organizations that exist in baseball today.
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: Do you see the Twins even though they're three below
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: five hundred and the Tigers are six below five hundred,
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: but the Tigers have won seven of their last ten.
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: There's a lot of talk about Trek Skuball and whether
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: the Tigers would deal him at the deadline. And we'll
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: get to the deadline here in a few minutes. As
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: Saltbuster only last night reporting that apparently school Ball was
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: not to be traded. It's not going to happen, but
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: we'll see what we'll see. Do you see the Twins
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: and Tigers being players in the central as this thing
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: cranks up into August and on in the September or
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: is that going to be squarely dependent on all what
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: happens at the deadline?
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:22:16Speaker 9: I think every you know, most of the teams I've
- 1:22:17Speaker 9: spoken to are we're going to see where we're at
- 1:22:19Speaker 9: the next seven to ten days before we make a decision.
- 1:22:22Speaker 9: I think that so many teams are looking for the
- 1:22:25Speaker 9: same thing. Teams are desperate for bullpen, teams are desperate
- 1:22:29Speaker 9: for starting pitching. There's many teams that are looking for
- 1:22:32Speaker 9: middle of the order run producing bats, and so I
- 1:22:35Speaker 9: think there's going to be teams that.
- 1:22:36Speaker 5: Are willing to take on some risk in those areas.
- 1:22:40Speaker 9: I think there's gonna be some teams that are willing
- 1:22:42Speaker 9: to take on some financial responsibility in those areas, and
- 1:22:46Speaker 9: so it's going to be interesting to see. The interesting
- 1:22:49Speaker 9: thing about the American League Central is it's kind of
- 1:22:51Speaker 9: like a slow play for twenty six, because everybody's going
- 1:22:55Speaker 9: to be equally talented in twenty seven.
- 1:22:57Speaker 5: And twenty eight.
- 1:22:57Speaker 9: And so do you make that one trade that gives
- 1:23:00Speaker 9: you two or three players of depth to help you
- 1:23:04Speaker 9: in twenty seven to twenty eight, or do you try
- 1:23:06Speaker 9: to hang in there this year and see what you
- 1:23:09Speaker 9: can do as far as the wild cards concerned. But
- 1:23:11Speaker 9: this is going to be a very difficult division for
- 1:23:14Speaker 9: years to come because a lot of these teams have
- 1:23:17Speaker 9: very good final listens.
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: Toward that end of what you just said about twenty
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: seven and twenty eight. And you know me, Geno, I'm
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: not a guy. I do not like to dwell on
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: the unpleasant, the foreboding, the possibility of a workstoppage in
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: twenty seven. But it does bring up one question. Might
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: teams and I can use the Guardians or the twins
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: of the Tigers as an example, might teams that might
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: not otherwise be as aggressive toward the deadline given where
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: they are in the standings, might they be a little
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: more aggressive than normal given the uncertainty of twenty twenty seven?
- 1:23:56Speaker 9: I think certainly in the American League you could see that.
- 1:23:58Speaker 9: I think when you look at the America League West
- 1:24:00Speaker 9: and the American League Central, they're they're clearly wide open divisions.
- 1:24:05Speaker 9: A little less in the American League East. I just
- 1:24:08Speaker 9: don't think it's going to be as push in in
- 1:24:11Speaker 9: that division it is in the Central West, and the nationally,
- 1:24:14Speaker 9: I think it's very very modest, only because everybody knows
- 1:24:18Speaker 9: the Dodgers are the defending back to back world champions
- 1:24:21Speaker 9: and they have a really good shot of winning a
- 1:24:24Speaker 9: third and so you know, what kind of investment are
- 1:24:26Speaker 9: you going to see that you think can push you
- 1:24:28Speaker 9: over the top. The one team that I would say
- 1:24:31Speaker 9: I expect to be super aggressive and take after the
- 1:24:34Speaker 9: Dodgers is the Atlanta Braids. They're healthy, they have a
- 1:24:37Speaker 9: very good team, They've got the pieces to make an
- 1:24:39Speaker 9: impactful trade for a major league pitcher, and so I
- 1:24:43Speaker 9: look for Atlanta to be fairly aggressive. But in the
- 1:24:46Speaker 9: American League, certainly, you know, it's it's wide open and
- 1:24:49Speaker 9: teams can be as aggressive as they want and have
- 1:24:51Speaker 9: a good chance of winning in October.
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: All right, the story of the year in the American League,
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: really in the Major is probably your ball club. The
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: other developing story is what's going on in Boston right now.
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: I mean, my goodness, this is fourteen in a row.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: The Red Sox have won. It's their second longest winning
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: streak ever. They surpassed the tie for second mark with
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: a forty eight ball club that tied for the American
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: League pennant with Cleveland and lost a one game playoff
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: back at nineteen forty eight. What's your biggest takeaway on
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: what the Red Sox are doing right now that is
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: so markedly different than when they were in last place
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: and we were playing the SoundBite from the angry fan
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: and all that other kind of stuff when they were
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: eleven below five hundred, and now they're three above five
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: hundred because they won fourteen in a row.
- 1:25:35Speaker 9: Well, I think the young talent has always been there.
- 1:25:39Speaker 9: It's not hard. It's very very difficult to develop at
- 1:25:43Speaker 9: the major league level. They've got a lot of very
- 1:25:45Speaker 9: good young players, especially on the mound, and I think
- 1:25:49Speaker 9: that when you go into the season like they did
- 1:25:52Speaker 9: in twenty twenty six, and the expectations are there, and
- 1:25:55Speaker 9: then the results aren't, and then you fire an Alex
- 1:25:58Speaker 9: Kra and then you've got, you know, the shock of that,
- 1:26:02Speaker 9: and not only Alex, with the entire coaching staff, and
- 1:26:04Speaker 9: you have those relationships between the players and the coaches,
- 1:26:08Speaker 9: and then as time goes on, you know, the players
- 1:26:10Speaker 9: have to look in the mirror and say, you know what,
- 1:26:12Speaker 9: you know, we can sit around and sulk about the
- 1:26:14Speaker 9: fact that that people lost their jobs, or we can
- 1:26:16Speaker 9: start playing up to their ability. And I was with
- 1:26:18Speaker 9: Chad Tracy in in in La with the Angels. He
- 1:26:23Speaker 9: was our farm director again, son of Jim Tracy, born
- 1:26:26Speaker 9: and raised in the game, So so the the education
- 1:26:30Speaker 9: and the speed up as far as being qualified to
- 1:26:33Speaker 9: be a manager was much much greater. But I think
- 1:26:35Speaker 9: they got through the storm of the firing of Alex
- 1:26:38Speaker 9: Kra and they've come together.
- 1:26:40Speaker 5: They're very very.
- 1:26:41Speaker 9: Young, they're very talented, and they've gone on a run
- 1:26:44Speaker 9: that that I think a lot of people would say
- 1:26:46Speaker 9: they are where they thought they would be at the
- 1:26:47Speaker 9: beginning of the year.
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: Let's let me jump to the American League West, and
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: you got the Mariners a game above five hundred in
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: first place after the winner of the Reds last night,
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: the Rangers after they're losing your ball all clubs only
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: a half game back. In fact, and this is mind
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: boggling to consider. Here are the Rangers at level five
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: hundred after one hundred ball games. They're fifty to fifty.
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: They are actually right behind the Red Sox. If the
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: regular season in the day, the Red Sox would be
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: the third wildcard, which is amazing enough to consider. But
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: you have the Rangers there. The Astros who won last
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: night are three and a half back. I heard somebody
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: say last week when they got to the one hundred
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: game mark, because right now they're that one oh two,
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: so I guess it was a couple of days ago
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: that it is the first time I believe the Astros
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: have been below five hundred at the one hundred game
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: mark since I think twenty eighteen or something like that,
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: seven eight years something like that. And yet for all that,
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: the three and a half back in the division race.
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: How about your thoughts on the American League West.
- 1:27:50Speaker 9: Well, I think Seattle continues to be the favorite just
- 1:27:53Speaker 9: just because of their death in the rotation, and they've
- 1:27:56Speaker 9: got an opportunity to go get leverageable and go get
- 1:28:00Speaker 9: a back, go do the things they need to do
- 1:28:04Speaker 9: to improve the roster because they have six starters and
- 1:28:08Speaker 9: there's there's lots of speculation within the industry that they
- 1:28:11Speaker 9: will end up trading one of the six starters to
- 1:28:13Speaker 9: improve their major league team. So I think that's kind
- 1:28:16Speaker 9: of swinging the needle for them a little bit.
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:28:19Speaker 9: And and when you look at the other teams, it's
- 1:28:21Speaker 9: it's how much are they going to be able to
- 1:28:23Speaker 9: push in with their systems to improve You don't want
- 1:28:26Speaker 9: to subtract from your major league team right now. Houston's
- 1:28:29Speaker 9: in a series with the Marlins right now, who have
- 1:28:31Speaker 9: not been playing well, and and they've got you know,
- 1:28:34Speaker 9: the Angels and and other teams this next week that
- 1:28:37Speaker 9: are very very competitive. And so I feel like Houston,
- 1:28:40Speaker 9: with the number of bullpen arms that they could potentially move, uh,
- 1:28:44Speaker 9: they're they're going to have to measure things up to
- 1:28:46Speaker 9: the deadline, and it'll be interesting what they decide. But
- 1:28:49Speaker 9: certainly Jordan Alvarez is going nowhere, opinions going nowhere. I
- 1:28:53Speaker 9: wouldn't expect Hunter Brown to be to be going anywhere.
- 1:28:56Speaker 9: But but there's teams that are going to have very
- 1:28:59Speaker 9: difficult decisions sitting three, four or five games out of
- 1:29:02Speaker 9: that wild card.
- 1:29:02Speaker 5: Knowing do we really have a shot this year for
- 1:29:05Speaker 5: our time to peel off.
- 1:29:07Speaker 9: And rejuvenate our minor league system some And it's going
- 1:29:10Speaker 9: to be interesting to see how they decide.
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: I'm talking major League baseball with Team Watson here for
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: a few more minutes. Let me jump to the National
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: League and the Brewers last night, with the virtue they're
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: win over the Mats and the Dodgers, you know, running
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: up against you know, Sanchez and having the difficult time,
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: they end up losing ten to seven that ball game.
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: So the Brewers now by one half game, actually have
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: the best record in all of baseball. Do you see
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: Milwaukee as being a team that can stand pat simply
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: because of what they have going for them right now
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: that they might not even need to look at making
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: a deal before the deadline.
- 1:29:45Speaker 9: One hundred And they've got enough young prospects in their
- 1:29:48Speaker 9: system that they can inject into the major league team
- 1:29:51Speaker 9: and fill every need that they potentially have. And another
- 1:29:55Speaker 9: organization that just knows who they are. Pat Murphy arguably.
- 1:29:58Speaker 5: One of the best managers in the game.
- 1:30:00Speaker 9: Miss Rowski's turn into you know, arguably the best pitcher
- 1:30:03Speaker 9: in the National League.
- 1:30:04Speaker 5: And so you know, there's this a well of machine
- 1:30:07Speaker 5: that are playing very well.
- 1:30:09Speaker 9: They have an identity, they do all the little things
- 1:30:12Speaker 9: well on a baseball field, and they've got a very
- 1:30:14Speaker 9: good minor league system that they don't necessarily need to
- 1:30:17Speaker 9: trade away to inject into the major league team.
- 1:30:20Speaker 5: And this is a this is a real World.
- 1:30:23Speaker 9: Series contender with the Dodgers, and and it could also
- 1:30:27Speaker 9: be a reason that the Braves feel like they need
- 1:30:29Speaker 9: to push in a little bit more with their roster.
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: Well, you brought up the Dodgers and the reason why
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: I'm interested in getting your thoughts like this. I'm now
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: starting to hear things following this team as I do
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: that while it would be great to get another frontline
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: starting pitcher before the deadline in school Ball's name had
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: come up, but now they're saying, hey, look, you know,
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: Blake Snell's making rehab starts. Tyler Glass now is not
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: that far away from that. They've shutowed Tony down for
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: two maybe three weeks, but they think they'll get him
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: in the back and be fine with that. Where there
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: were he seems to be is catcher because they don't
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: know about Will Smith's net injury as well, so he's
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: and right now you have a young guy obviously behind
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: the behind the plate there and then almost nothing back there.
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: So now we're hearing that maybe the Dodgers might be
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: the market for a catcher at the deadline. Is that
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: also kind of the rumor rumblings that you're hearing as well?
- 1:31:24Speaker 9: Of course, and and and I think Will is going
- 1:31:27Speaker 9: to be okay. I think you have to protect yourself
- 1:31:30Speaker 9: as you get closer to the deadline in the event
- 1:31:32Speaker 9: he's not. But you're not going to get the impact
- 1:31:35Speaker 9: of a Will Smith. They're just they're not out there,
- 1:31:38Speaker 9: especially with what the acquisition costs would be for premium
- 1:31:41Speaker 9: position player at that position. So you almost have to
- 1:31:44Speaker 9: look around the league and look at, you know, some
- 1:31:46Speaker 9: stopcap guys that can come in and be more complementary
- 1:31:50Speaker 9: and protect yourself from an insurative standpoint if he comes
- 1:31:54Speaker 9: back before the deadline, and that takes another injury. So
- 1:31:57Speaker 9: you want to create as much depth as you possibly
- 1:31:59Speaker 9: can at the premium positions, not just catcher, but but
- 1:32:03Speaker 9: I think that's going to be something that they look at.
- 1:32:05Speaker 9: But going out and getting that impactful catcher, I mean,
- 1:32:09Speaker 9: know the Royal is going to trade Salvador Perez. I
- 1:32:11Speaker 9: wouldn't think so, but who knows. But it'll be interesting
- 1:32:14Speaker 9: seed to eat, you know, if they do to assure
- 1:32:17Speaker 9: that position beyond August third.
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: Could you even see the Athletics thinking about partying with
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: the Shee Langeliers.
- 1:32:24Speaker 5: I don't think so.
- 1:32:25Speaker 9: Going into a new ballpark in Vegas, I think that
- 1:32:27Speaker 9: they've got a really good core of young position players
- 1:32:30Speaker 9: that they're going to be able to market in Las Vegas.
- 1:32:33Speaker 9: I think they're going to have a situation where they
- 1:32:35Speaker 9: can throw some money at the team once they get
- 1:32:37Speaker 9: to Vegas, and they have a really good for as
- 1:32:40Speaker 9: much as everybody thought they would be better than they are,
- 1:32:43Speaker 9: they still really have a very good young core position
- 1:32:45Speaker 9: players that have fallen upon injury and that's been a
- 1:32:48Speaker 9: lot of their downfall this year.
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: Okay, all right, the last thing I want to ask
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: you about is in this National League, if the regular
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: season were to end the day, the three wildcards in
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: the nat A League would be the Cubs, the Phillies,
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: and then take a shot because the Cardinals, Marlins, and
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: Pirates right now are all tied for the last wildcard spot.
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: The Diamondbacks are a half game off of that pace.
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: Uh Jake's Washington Nationals are one game back off of
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: that as well. How crazy is this going to get
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: all the way down the stretch.
- 1:33:23Speaker 9: Well, pitching to the currency of the game, and the
- 1:33:25Speaker 9: Pirates have it, and so as you know it's already
- 1:33:28Speaker 9: hot or almost into August, as they get closer to
- 1:33:32Speaker 9: the fall, that pitching where other organizations are going to
- 1:33:34Speaker 9: wear down lack of depth or.
- 1:33:36Speaker 5: The team's taking on innings.
- 1:33:38Speaker 9: Watch out for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and I think they
- 1:33:40Speaker 9: have a chance to make some sneaky moves at the deadline.
- 1:33:44Speaker 9: To me know, make Ley possibly make a late push.
- 1:33:48Speaker 9: And so to me, when you have the arms on
- 1:33:51Speaker 9: the mound, that gives you a little bit of advantage
- 1:33:53Speaker 9: over the other teams. The Marlins, even though they're struggling
- 1:33:56Speaker 9: right now, have played extremely well. Clayton McCall has done
- 1:33:59Speaker 9: a job with that organization, and so you know, they
- 1:34:02Speaker 9: play very dynamic baseball as a team, but that last
- 1:34:06Speaker 9: wild card in the National League has a chance to
- 1:34:09Speaker 9: come down to the final days of the season.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: That's why they put it in there. He's Gene Watson,
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: and he's the reason why we talk Major League Baseball
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: in this program each week.
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: Geno, I appreciate the time.
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: Best of luck again to your ball club tonight up
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: in Arlington, and we'll do it again next week.
- 1:34:23Speaker 5: All right, Greig, thanks so much, have a great day
- 1:34:25Speaker 5: you too.
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: That's Gene Watson from the Chicago White Sox front office,
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: our MLB insider. We have more coming up here on
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: this Tuesday afternoon on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: Zone and on the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: Under the Weight of the Badge.
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: Seen it all and it's fifteen. We continue on a
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: Texa Tuesday here on thirteen hundred designed thanksgain to Gene Watson,
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: join us to talk baseball. Okay, hearing from the King
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: George Strait. This is the particular offering we're.
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: Going with the Weight of the Badge. I know it's
- 1:34:56Speaker 2: a little slower compared to some of George Strait's other offerings.
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: He's got a lot of ballots and and you know,
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: we know he's a troubad order, you know that sort
- 1:35:04Speaker 2: of thing. So this one obviously is has saw on
- 1:35:07Speaker 2: kind of paying respect for our police in the communities,
- 1:35:11Speaker 2: and and it's a different type of badge. So the
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: one we heard about yesterday from Kareem and George Harrison,
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: that's for sure.
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, they're about wearing your badge at the
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: UH at the Texas High School Coaches Association's Coaching School
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: and Convention, which by the way, today is election day.
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: There at the convention, UH, most of the exhibitors I
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: think have packed up their things in the exhibit hall.
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: I think they were going to do it by noon today.
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: Start packing it up, they get they get basically Sunday,
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: definitely Monday, the big day, and then about half the
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: day on Tuesday, from probably around eight am till about noon.
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: And then and then they start packing it up and
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: heading off, carting up those industrial washing machines and dryers
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: and scoreboards and goal post and down markers and field
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: turf samples and sports drinks and motivational videos and instruction
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: manuals and things like all that stuff that's a part
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: of the exhibit Hall. It's kind of fun to see,
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: though it's it's an unusual look. Speaking of unusual, you
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: may have heard about this by now. There's been another
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: big round of layoffs with ESPN, and there's some very
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: recognizable names. I'll start with it chronologically, because Ryan Clark
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: working on you worked on Monday Night Football and was
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: a big part of Scott Van Peltz Sports Center on
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: Monday Nights in recapping Monday Night Football. Former NFL player,
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: of course, he was let go. The unusual thing that
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: happened with Ryan Clark was he was let go during
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: the NFL Live show that he was actually a part of.
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: So it was during the program they let him know
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: that I think during a break.
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: Uh, by the way, we're not we're doing your contracts.
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: So then he just left after they didn't even finish
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: the show. You wonder what Laura Rutledge and the other
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: NFL a lot of people were wondering, like, what's going
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: on here, you know that sort of thing that The
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: Athletic had reported that ESPN decided to tell Clark during
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: the broadcast out of fears that news of his departure
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: would leak. Sources said they didn't want him to read
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: it online before being told in person. Okay, I get that,
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: but can't you tell him in person in another thirty
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: minutes after he finishes the program, or do it before
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: the program on the middle of the program. That weird
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: U But he did. But his job allegedly had been
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: in jeopardy since the Super Bowl. Remember the big argument
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: he got into with Peter Schrager. Do you remember that deal?
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: Wh Yeah, I was trying to tell him basically played
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: the former player card of you know, because you didn't play,
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: so you know your opinion isn't isn't valid?
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: He said, uh, yeah, like you said. Here's a guy
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: by the way. At the Sports Emmy Awards three years ago,
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: was named Outstanding Personality Studio Analyst. He was making over
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: two million a year.
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: I really enjoy his film Breakdown.
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: Yeah, there was a lot that there was a lot
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: that was that was really good. But they said that
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: ESPN executives had an eye on his performance after the
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: incidents with Peter Schrager. In September of last year, Clark
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: and Schrager had an on air spat on Get Up
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: on ESPN the Morning Show. Schreger was defending Ceedee Lamb
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: of the Cowboys and that was that opening night loss
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: for the Cowboys, and Shreger was defending him, and then
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: Clark said to him, pointing a finger, we shouldn't do
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: this on TV. So I apologize that people think this
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: is rude. That's the non player in you. And Shreger
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: asked him not to be little I and instead to
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: allow him to advoice other perspectives. And then Clark said, Peter,
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: what I need you for you to do is not
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: get mad and let me finish, and so it got
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: kind of heated. It went viral. Then Clark later on
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: posted an apology on X The quote was, today I
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: had an interaction with my colleague and he has his
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: Pete Schreggs his his handle both on and off the
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: air that I regret. I've apologized to Peter and taken
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: accountability with ESPN leadership. I value working with Peter and
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: look forward to the season. My focus will remain on professionalism, teamwork,
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: and being a better teammate moving forward. He went straight
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: to social medium yesterday and said proof of life before
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: the madness of yesterday, I woke up, got him on tundra,
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: drove the planet, fitness, got to work the rest of
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: the day was eventful, but the journey continues. My pieces
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: with God, my humility comes from within. I'll continue to
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: build myself so the world can never strip me of
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: what's real. Get moving today. But again, companies make moves
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: they have to do, you know, downsizing. And there was
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: an even bigger name I think that was let go
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: as well. But the weird thing about that whole deal
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: is then letting him know while the shooting of the
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: show was going on, Yeah, that that's tough, and said
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: that that is a difficult thing. The other big name,
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: I mean there were there were several names. Tom Pellisero,
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: who you know, since ESPN has acquired NFL Network and
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: they've used him and I think his work is really good.
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: He was he was laid off. But the biggest name
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: I think was the guy who was doing the Monday
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: night baseball game last night. Yeah, I mean I'm watching
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: Phillies and Dodgers and Karl Ravitch is doing the game
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: with what David Ross.
- 1:41:12Speaker 2: And ed Wada, Perez ed Water and then and then
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: they had.
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: No I guess it was the other night Sunday when
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: they had CC Sabatia down on the field as well.
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: But Karl Ravag laid off after more than thirty years
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: at the network. He joined ESPN as an anchor in
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: ninety three. Was a longtime host of Sports Center and
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: Baseball Tonight play by play, League Call, the lead voice
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: on the College World Series, a lot of SEC hoops. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: might see Mike Monaco transition into some of those roles
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: as well. He was doing the late game last night
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: for ESPN R.
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: Yeah, he's been busy. He did some tennis Wimbledon.
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: Yep. Absolutely, We'll be back to wrap up today's edition
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: in the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: the Zone and the iHeart Radio app.
