  that

  every

  time
• 1:17
  I
• 1:17
  open

  my

• 1:18
  I'll

  be

  to
• 1:18
  make
• 1:18
  Christ
• 1:19
  plain
• 1:19
  as
• 1:19
  day
• 1:19
  to
• 1:20
  them.
• 1:22
  Use
• 1:22
  your
• 1:22
  heads
• 1:22
  as
• 1:22
  you
• 1:22
  live
• 1:23
  and
• 1:23
  work
• 1:23
  among
• 1:23
  outsiders.
• 1:24
  Don't
• 1:24
  miss
• 1:24
  a
• 1:25
  trick.
• 1:26
  Make
• 1:26
  the
• 1:26
  most
• 1:26
  of
• 1:26
  every
• 1:27
  opportunity.
• 1:28
  Be
• 1:28
  gracious
• 1:29
  in
• 1:29
  your
• 1:29
  speech.
• 1:30
  The
• 1:30
  goal
• 1:30
  is,
• 1:31
  is
• 1:31
  to
• 1:31
  bring
• 1:31
  up
• 1:32
  the
• 1:32
  best
• 1:32
  in
• 1:32
  others
• 1:32
  in
• 1:33
  a
• 1:33
  conversation.
• 1:34
  Not
• 1:34
  pull
• 1:34
  them
• 1:35
  down,
• 1:35
  not
• 1:35
  cut
• 1:35
  them
• 1:36
  out.
• 1:38
  Well,
• 1:38
  that
• 1:38
  ends
• 1:39
  the
• 1:39
  reading.
• 1:40
  So
• 1:40
  just.
• 1:40
  Let's
• 1:41
  just
• 1:41
  take
• 1:41
  a
• 1:41
  moment
• 1:41
  to
• 1:41
  reflect
• 1:42
  on
• 1:42
  the
• 1:42
  Scripture.
• 1:43
  I'm
• 1:44
  glad.
• 1:44
  I'm
• 1:44
  glad
• 1:44
  you're
• 1:45
  here
• 1:45
  today.
• 1:46
  Um,
• 1:47
  I've
• 1:47
  been
• 1:47
  thinking
• 1:47
  a
• 1:47
  lot
• 1:48
  about
• 1:48
  conversations
• 1:48
  here
• 1:49
  recently,
• 1:49
  the
• 1:49
  kind
• 1:49
  that
• 1:50
  actually
• 1:50
  leave
• 1:50
  people
• 1:50
  feeling
• 1:51
  more
• 1:51
  whole
• 1:52
  than
• 1:53
  when
• 1:53
  they
• 1:53
  started.
• 1:54
  And
• 1:54
  this
• 1:54
  short,
• 1:55
  little,
• 1:55
  short
• 1:55
  little
• 1:56
  passage
• 1:56
  we're
• 1:56
  looking
• 1:56
  at
• 1:56
  today
• 1:57
  lands
• 1:57
  right
• 1:57
  in
• 1:57
  the
• 1:57
  middle
• 1:58
  of
• 1:58
  that
• 1:58
  territory.
• 1:59
  Just
• 1:59
  six
• 2:00
  verses,
• 2:01
  six
• 2:02
  short
• 2:02
  passages,
• 2:03
  but
• 2:03
  packed.
• 2:04
  Let's
• 2:04
  dig
• 2:04
  into
• 2:05
  two
• 2:05
  things
• 2:05
  that
• 2:05
  really
• 2:05
  grab
• 2:06
  me
• 2:06
  here.
• 2:08
  The
• 2:08
  first
• 2:08
  point
• 2:09
  to
• 2:09
  ponder
• 2:09
  is
• 2:09
  this.
• 2:10
  Eyes
• 2:11
  wide
• 2:11
  open
• 2:11
  in
• 2:11
  gratitude.
• 2:13
  It's
• 2:13
  right
• 2:13
  there
• 2:13
  in
• 2:13
  verse
• 2:13
  two
• 2:14
  of
• 2:14
  this
• 2:14
  very
• 2:14
  beautiful
• 2:15
  phrase
• 2:15
  I
• 2:15
  haven't
• 2:16
  been
• 2:16
  able
• 2:16
  to
• 2:16
  shake.
• 2:17
  It
• 2:17
  simply
• 2:17
  says,
• 2:18
  stay
• 2:18
  alert
• 2:19
  with
• 2:19
  your
• 2:19
  eyes
• 2:19
  wide
• 2:20
  open
• 2:20
  in
• 2:20
  gratitude.
• 2:21
  Now
• 2:22
  for
• 2:23
  a
• 2:23
  lot
• 2:23
  of
• 2:23
  prayerful
• 2:23
  teaching.
• 2:24
  I
• 2:24
  grew
• 2:24
  up
• 2:24
  with
• 2:25
  frame
• 2:25
  prayer
• 2:25
  as
• 2:25
  kind
• 2:26
  of
• 2:26
  a
• 2:26
  spiritual
• 2:27
  escape
• 2:27
  hatch.
• 2:28
  You
• 2:28
  know,
• 2:28
  close
• 2:28
  your
• 2:29
  eyes,
• 2:29
  turn
• 2:29
  out
• 2:29
  the
• 2:29
  world,
• 2:30
  focus
• 2:30
  someplace
• 2:31
  else,
• 2:32
  and
• 2:33
  look.
• 2:33
  I
• 2:33
  get
• 2:33
  the
• 2:33
  value
• 2:33
  of
• 2:34
  stillness.
• 2:35
  But
• 2:35
  Paul
• 2:35
  is
• 2:35
  writing
• 2:35
  this
• 2:36
  from
• 2:36
  a
• 2:36
  jail
• 2:36
  cell.
• 2:37
  He's
• 2:38
  not
• 2:38
  asking
• 2:38
  for
• 2:38
  an
• 2:38
  escape.
• 2:39
  He's
• 2:40
  asking
• 2:40
  for
• 2:40
  open
• 2:40
  doors.
• 2:41
  He's
• 2:42
  asking
• 2:42
  for
• 2:42
  alertness,
• 2:43
  he
• 2:43
  is
• 2:43
  asking
• 2:44
  to
• 2:44
  stay
• 2:44
  present
• 2:44
  enough
• 2:45
  to
• 2:46
  recognize
• 2:46
  what
• 2:46
  God
• 2:47
  is
• 2:47
  doing
• 2:47
  right
• 2:47
  in
• 2:48
  front
• 2:48
  of
• 2:48
  him.
• 2:49
  That
• 2:49
  is
• 2:49
  eyes
• 2:50
  wide
• 2:50
  open
• 2:50
  in
• 2:51
  gratitude.
• 2:52
  And
• 2:52
  that's
• 2:53
  a
• 2:53
  different
• 2:53
  kind
• 2:53
  of
• 2:54
  posture.
• 2:55
  My
• 2:56
  wife
• 2:56
  and
• 2:56
  I
• 2:56
  love
• 2:56
  to
• 2:56
  hike
• 2:57
  and,
• 2:58
  and
• 2:58
  you
• 2:58
  know,
• 2:58
  we
• 2:59
  love
• 2:59
  to
• 2:59
  go
• 2:59
  on
• 3:00
  wooded
• 3:00
  trails
• 3:00
  at

  state
• 3:01
  parks
• 3:01
  and
• 3:01

• 3:01

• 3:03
  And
• 3:04
  that's
• 3:04
  one
• 3:05
  thing
• 3:05
  that
• 3:05
  kind
• 3:05
  of
• 3:06
  our
• 3:06
  happy

• 3:07
  And
• 3:08
  hiking
• 3:08
  is
• 3:08
  something
• 3:09
  simple.
• 3:09
  People
• 3:09
  who
• 3:10
  miss
• 3:10
  everything
• 3:10
  beautiful,
• 3:11
  the
• 3:11
  ones
• 3:12
  staring
• 3:12
  at
• 3:12
  their
• 3:12
  feet
• 3:12
  their
• 3:13
  whole
• 3:13
  time,
• 3:13
  you
• 3:13
  got
• 3:13
  to
• 3:13
  look
• 3:13
  up
• 3:14
  and
• 3:14
  look
• 3:14
  around
• 3:15
  the
• 3:15
  deer,
• 3:16
  the
• 3:16
  waterfall,
• 3:16
  the
• 3:17
  leaves,
• 3:17
  the

  trees,
• 3:18
  the
• 3:18
  light
• 3:18
  breaking
• 3:19
  through
• 3:19
  the
• 3:19
  tree
• 3:19
  canopy.
• 3:20
  And
• 3:21
  you
• 3:21
  only
• 3:21
  catch
• 3:21
  that
• 3:21
  kind
• 3:22
  of
• 3:22
  stuff
• 3:22
  if
• 3:22
  you're
• 3:22
  looking
• 3:23
  for
• 3:23
  it.

  progressive
• 3:24
  reading
• 3:25
  of
• 3:25
  this
• 3:25
  text
• 3:25
  suggests
• 3:26
  that
• 3:27
  prayer
• 3:27
  isn't
• 3:27
  primarily
• 3:28
  about
• 3:28
  getting
• 3:28
  God
• 3:28
  to

  act
• 3:29
  on
• 3:29
  our

• 3:30
  It's

  about

  turning
• 3:31
  our
• 3:31
  own
• 3:31
  awareness
• 3:32
  to
• 3:32
  where

  grace
• 3:32
  is
• 3:33
  already
• 3:33
  moving.
• 3:34
  Gratitude
• 3:35
  is

  the

  our

• 3:37
  is

  the

• 3:39
  And
• 3:39
  when
• 3:39
  we

  pray,
• 3:39
  that
• 3:40
  way
• 3:40
  we

  missing

  out

• 3:55
  have
• 3:56
  learned
• 3:56
  to
• 3:56
  stay
• 3:56
  alert
• 3:57
  to
• 3:57
  small
• 3:58
  good
• 3:58
  things,
• 3:58
  even
• 3:59
  inside
• 3:59
  brutal
• 3:59
  circumstances.
• 4:01
  That
• 4:01
  isn't
• 4:02
  toxic
• 4:02
  positivity.
• 4:03
  That's
• 4:03
  exactly
• 4:03
  what
• 4:04
  Paul
• 4:04
  means.
• 4:05
  My
• 4:05
  eyes
• 4:05
  wide
• 4:06
  open
• 4:07
  in
• 4:07
  gratitude.
• 4:09
  Here's
• 4:09
  your
• 4:09
  second
• 4:10
  point
• 4:10
  to
• 4:10
  ponder.
• 4:11
  Gracious
• 4:12
  speech
• 4:12
  is
• 4:12
  not
• 4:13
  soft.
• 4:13
  It's
• 4:13
  the
• 4:13
  point.
• 4:15
  Now
• 4:15
  here's
• 4:15
  where
• 4:16
  this
• 4:16
  passage
• 4:16
  gets
• 4:16
  interesting.
• 4:18
  Verse
• 4:18
  6
• 4:18
  says
• 4:19
  the
• 4:19
  golden
• 4:19
  conversation
• 4:20
  is
• 4:20
  to
• 4:21
  bring
• 4:21
  out
• 4:21
  the
• 4:22
  best
• 4:22
  in
• 4:22
  others,
• 4:23
  not
• 4:23
  pull
• 4:23
  them
• 4:23
  down,
• 4:24
  not
• 4:24
  cut
• 4:24
  them
• 4:25
  out.
• 4:26
  So
• 4:26
  look
• 4:26
  at
• 4:26
  our
• 4:27
  cultural
• 4:27
  moments
• 4:27
  we're
• 4:28
  in
• 4:28
  right
• 4:28
  now
• 4:29
  and
• 4:29
  listen
• 4:30
  and
• 4:30
  learn
• 4:30
  from
• 4:31
  what's
• 4:31
  going
• 4:31
  on
• 4:31
  around
• 4:31
  us.
• 4:33
  One
• 4:34
  of
• 4:34
  the
• 4:34
  things
• 4:34
  I
• 4:34
  love
• 4:34
  to
• 4:34
  do
• 4:34
  is
• 4:35
  follow
• 4:35
  my
• 4:35
  Pacers
• 4:36
  and
• 4:36
  fever
• 4:36
  and
• 4:36
  Colts,
• 4:37
  Indiana,
• 4:38
  Hoosiers.
• 4:39
  But
• 4:39
  even
• 4:40
  sports
• 4:40
  commentary
• 4:41
  has
• 4:41
  become
• 4:41
  a
• 4:42
  blood
• 4:42
  sport
• 4:42
  online.
• 4:43
  Lots
• 4:44
  of
• 4:44
  vicious
• 4:44
  stuff,
• 4:45
  lots
• 4:45
  of
• 4:45
  it.
• 4:46
  Our
• 4:46
  default
• 4:46
  communication
• 4:47
  posture
• 4:48
  is
• 4:48
  is
• 4:48
  competitive.
• 4:49
  We
• 4:50
  argue
• 4:50
  to
• 4:50
  win,
• 4:51
  we
• 4:51
  post
• 4:52
  to
• 4:52
  score
• 4:52
  points,
• 4:52
  we
• 4:53
  debate
• 4:53
  to
• 4:53
  dominate.
• 4:55
  And
• 4:55
  that
• 4:55
  is
• 4:56
  that
• 4:56
  bleeds
• 4:57
  in
• 4:57
  the
• 4:57
  families,
• 4:57
  churches,
• 4:58
  cultures,
• 4:58
  dinner
• 4:59
  tables
• 4:59
  everywhere.
• 5:00
  And
• 5:00
  Paul's
• 5:01
  counter
• 5:01
  proposal
• 5:02
  is
• 5:02
  striking.
• 5:03
  The
• 5:03
  goal
• 5:03
  isn't
• 5:04
  to
• 5:04
  be
• 5:04
  right.
• 5:04
  The
• 5:04
  goal
• 5:05
  isn't
• 5:05
  to
• 5:05
  win.
• 5:05
  The
• 5:05
  goal
• 5:05
  is
• 5:06
  to
• 5:06
  bring
• 5:06
  up
• 5:06
  the
• 5:06
  best
• 5:07
  in
• 5:07
  the
• 5:08
  person
• 5:08
  across
• 5:09
  from
• 5:09
  you.
• 5:10
  And
• 5:10
  that's
• 5:10
  a
• 5:11
  profound
• 5:11
  relational,
• 5:12
  deeply
• 5:12
  Jesus
• 5:13
  shaped
• 5:13
  vision
• 5:14
  of
• 5:14
  what
• 5:15
  words
• 5:15
  are
• 5:15
  for.
• 5:16
  A
• 5:16
  progressive
• 5:17
  theological
• 5:18
  lens
• 5:18
  pushes
• 5:18
  us
• 5:19
  to
• 5:19
  ask
• 5:19
  what
• 5:19
  if
• 5:20
  the
• 5:20
  measure
• 5:20
  of
• 5:20
  how
• 5:21
  well
• 5:21
  we
• 5:21
  communicated
• 5:22
  isn't
• 5:22
  whether
• 5:22
  we
• 5:23
  were
• 5:23
  right,
• 5:24
  but
• 5:24
  whether
• 5:24
  a
• 5:24
  person
• 5:24
  we
• 5:25
  talked
• 5:25
  to
• 5:25
  walked
• 5:25
  away
• 5:25
  feeling
• 5:26
  more,
• 5:27
  feeling
• 5:27
  more,
• 5:27
  being
• 5:28
  seen
• 5:28
  more,
• 5:28
  more
• 5:28
  valued
• 5:29
  and
• 5:29
  more
• 5:29
  capable
• 5:29
  of
• 5:30
  flourishing.
• 5:31
  My
• 5:31
  wife
• 5:32
  and
• 5:32
  I
• 5:32
  have
• 5:32
  been
• 5:32
  married
• 5:32
  for
• 5:32
  34
• 5:33
  years.
• 5:33
  We
• 5:33
  have
• 5:34
  three
• 5:34
  great
• 5:35
  adult
• 5:35
  children,
• 5:36
  two
• 5:36
  granddaughters
• 5:37
  and
• 5:38
  I
• 5:39
  love
• 5:39
  to
• 5:39
  embarrass
• 5:39
  my
• 5:40
  granddaughters
• 5:40
  in
• 5:40
  public
• 5:41
  and
• 5:41
  but
• 5:41
  dad
• 5:42
  jokes
• 5:42
  and
• 5:42
  makes
• 5:42
  every
• 5:43
  mix
• 5:43
  them
• 5:43
  groan
• 5:44
  and
• 5:45
  but
• 5:46
  but
• 5:46
  across
• 5:46
  all
• 5:47
  those
• 5:47
  years
• 5:47
  of
• 5:47
  relationships,
• 5:48
  the
• 5:48
  conversations
• 5:48
  I
• 5:48
  regret
• 5:49
  most
• 5:49
  are
• 5:50
  the
• 5:50
  ones
• 5:50
  where
• 5:50
  I
• 5:50
  chose
• 5:50
  being
• 5:51
  right
• 5:51
  over
• 5:52
  being
• 5:52
  gracious.
• 5:53
  You
• 5:53
  know,
• 5:54
  kind
• 5:54
  of
• 5:54
  the
• 5:54
  one
• 5:54
  upmanship.
• 5:55
  I
• 5:55
  don't
• 5:55
  like
• 5:55
  that
• 5:56
  the
• 5:56
  ones
• 5:56
  I
• 5:57
  treasure,
• 5:57
  every
• 5:57
  single
• 5:58
  one
• 5:58
  of
• 5:58
  them
• 5:58
  left
• 5:58
  the
• 5:58
  other
• 5:59
  person
• 5:59
  feeling
• 6:00
  like
• 6:00
  they
• 6:00
  actually
• 6:00
  mattered
• 6:01
  and
• 6:02
  vice
• 6:02
  versa.
• 6:02
  When
• 6:03
  someone
• 6:03
  made
• 6:03
  me
• 6:03
  feel
• 6:03
  better,
• 6:04
  made
• 6:05
  me
• 6:05
  feel
• 6:05
  valued
• 6:05
  as
• 6:05
  well.
• 6:06
  That's
• 6:06
  what's
• 6:07
  really
• 6:08
  valued.
• 6:09
  That
• 6:09
  is
• 6:09
  the
• 6:09
  goal.
• 6:10
  Bring
• 6:10
  out
• 6:10
  the
• 6:11
  Best.
• 6:12
  So
• 6:12
  here's
• 6:12
  your
• 6:13
  action
• 6:13
  step.
• 6:14
  Before
• 6:14
  you
• 6:14
  enter
• 6:15
  any
• 6:15
  significant
• 6:15
  casual
• 6:16
  or
• 6:17

• 6:19
  this

• 6:19
  whether
• 6:19
  it's

• 6:20
  one,
• 6:20
  a
• 6:20

• 6:20

  or
• 6:21
  even

  a
• 6:22
  comment

  section
• 6:23
  online,
• 6:24
  ask
• 6:24
  yourself
• 6:24
  one
• 6:25
  question
• 6:25
  first.
• 6:26
  How
• 6:26
  can
• 6:27
  I
• 6:27
  bring
• 6:27
  out
• 6:27
  the
• 6:27
  best
• 6:27
  in
• 6:28
  this
• 6:28
  person
• 6:28
  right
• 6:28
  now?
• 6:29
  Not
• 6:30
  when,
• 6:30
  not
• 6:30
  correct,
• 6:31
  not
• 6:31
  convince,
• 6:32
  just
• 6:32
  bring
• 6:32
  out
• 6:33
  the

• 6:34
  We're
