- 0:00Speaker 1: Where should I begin? Can we talk about this?
- 0:01Speaker 2: Say?
- 0:02Speaker 3: What are you trying to do?
- 0:03Speaker 4: Beyond the usual controversial talking over there?
- 0:10Speaker 1: One one to prepare yourself? Okay for Craig, girl.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Preparing my den you spectacle.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Here, particulate stimulated, pitt there you go back, tell yeah,
- 0:27Speaker 1: you start becoming a gene. Is the Craig Cullin show.
- 0:33Speaker 5: Jesus, oh God, no dot talking to Heck.
- 0:36Speaker 1: This station is now the ultimate power in the universe.
- 0:39Speaker 5: Your host a good.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Man, Craig.
- 0:42Speaker 5: That's right, It is the Craig Collins Show.
- 0:44Speaker 4: K S c V KGBC the voice of I keep
- 0:48Speaker 4: doing that, man, because it's just in my brain and
- 0:50Speaker 4: I gotta stop. I don't think the k other thing
- 0:53Speaker 4: doesn't matter. K S EV the voice is the voice
- 0:56Speaker 4: of Texas, thrilled to be with you. So much stuff
- 0:59Speaker 4: out there to talk about. I haven't even been here
- 1:01Speaker 4: that long. It's weird that it's stuck in my brain
- 1:04Speaker 4: and not everybody else is. Everybody's doing a great job
- 1:06Speaker 4: of forgetting some things. There's a lot of stuff out
- 1:09Speaker 4: there for us to discuss. I think, by and large,
- 1:12Speaker 4: the most important thing is what the President said last night.
- 1:15Speaker 4: I think there's a lot of people that already dismiss it.
- 1:18Speaker 4: My favorite of all the people saying that all the
- 1:20Speaker 4: things he said were complete crap is left leaning media.
- 1:24Speaker 4: There's so many examples, both written and video versions, and
- 1:27Speaker 4: people who ignored obviously didn't air the comments at all
- 1:32Speaker 4: made by the president.
- 1:33Speaker 5: It's so good.
- 1:34Speaker 4: But my favorite one was probably The Guardian and the
- 1:37Speaker 4: way that they summed it up, or the New York Times,
- 1:40Speaker 4: the failing of New York Times, because consistently they said
- 1:44Speaker 4: that everything that President Trump said was a lie, that
- 1:46Speaker 4: all of the information he gave you about the amount
- 1:49Speaker 4: of stolen data that China did, as far as voters
- 1:54Speaker 4: here in the United States goes, that's normal. Everybody can
- 1:57Speaker 4: have that. China maybe shouldn't have it, but it's not
- 1:59Speaker 4: a big deal. And then my favorite thing is they
- 2:02Speaker 4: identified the one document that was put out there that
- 2:07Speaker 4: was made available to the public, and they said, this
- 2:10Speaker 4: document proves that Russia tried to help President Trump in
- 2:14Speaker 4: the twenty twenty election. And here's what's the twenty sixteen election.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Here's what's really amusing to me about that. It's the
- 2:21Speaker 4: exact same claim that's being made all of these you know,
- 2:25Speaker 4: declassified documents are demonstrating the ways that several different other
- 2:29Speaker 4: countries meddle in our elections, all the ways they do it.
- 2:32Speaker 4: And so what's amazing is their obsession mainstream media with
- 2:36Speaker 4: Russia specifically and anything that benefited Trump. So you remember,
- 2:41Speaker 4: and I remember how constant of a narrative that was
- 2:44Speaker 4: that you know, Russia essentially stole the election.
- 2:46Speaker 5: From Hillary Clinton.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Not just in the world of Democrats, this was in
- 2:50Speaker 4: the world of all of the people who said this
- 2:52Speaker 4: sort of stuff on television. And President Trump did a
- 2:55Speaker 4: giant speech last night, used the same I think like
- 3:00Speaker 4: level of information necessary to go with his narrative that
- 3:05Speaker 4: they went with with theirs, and they've dismissed it out
- 3:07Speaker 4: of hand immediately, they said, how dare you so I
- 3:11Speaker 4: kind of think this is my opinion that well, a
- 3:14Speaker 4: whole bunch of what President Trump shared out there yesterday
- 3:18Speaker 4: was incredibly important in the role of man. There are
- 3:21Speaker 4: a lot of bad actors trying to mess with our
- 3:23Speaker 4: election in all kinds of ways. However they're succeeding at
- 3:26Speaker 4: doing it. The fact that our voting machines can be hacked,
- 3:30Speaker 4: I think the data said, you'd have to be pretty
- 3:32Speaker 4: close to them, but they're not exactly invulnerable. They're not
- 3:35Speaker 4: exactly immune to any kind of hacking. The amount of
- 3:38Speaker 4: information China would have on the voters of the United States,
- 3:41Speaker 4: who they are, how they vote, like, some of that
- 3:43Speaker 4: stuff kind of surprising. But the most interesting thing to me,
- 3:46Speaker 4: and this is the four D chess version, is that
- 3:49Speaker 4: I think the media has to accept the idea that
- 3:52Speaker 4: they made everything up about Russia Russia Russia for years
- 3:56Speaker 4: or everything Trump said last night is categorically true and
- 4:02Speaker 4: matters and is important to protecting our elections.
- 4:04Speaker 5: It can't be no across the board.
- 4:07Speaker 4: And I saw that a lot of people are trying
- 4:08Speaker 4: to say no, just across the board on that subject,
- 4:12Speaker 4: on that topic, that they don't want anything that Trump
- 4:15Speaker 4: claimed wasn't true, that they all said was true about
- 4:18Speaker 4: Russia to not also be relevant to China or anybody else.
- 4:22Speaker 4: And then as far as illegal immigrants that are voting
- 4:24Speaker 4: on our election roles, and I think there's only one
- 4:27Speaker 4: declassified document that talks about this. The projection is that
- 4:32Speaker 4: it's at least two hundred and fifty thousand people across
- 4:35Speaker 4: four or five states that are easily on these rolls.
- 4:39Speaker 4: It doesn't go into further detail, probably because to do
- 4:42Speaker 4: that you have to start saying who the people are.
- 4:45Speaker 4: But it's incredibly significant. And the thing that I thought
- 4:48Speaker 4: was amazing about mainstream media talking about that topic is
- 4:52Speaker 4: how they just breezed right through it. They're like, yeah,
- 4:53Speaker 4: and somebody somewhere claimed the thing is true. The Department
- 4:57Speaker 4: of Homeland Security, who cares about them? They don't matter,
- 5:00Speaker 4: None of these people matter. It's just it's amazing. I'll
- 5:05Speaker 4: tell you, I watched the whole thing, and I thought
- 5:07Speaker 4: to myself during all the speech, of all the moments,
- 5:09Speaker 4: that people were going to attack and say, like, this
- 5:11Speaker 4: isn't true, that's not true. The President kept saying that
- 5:14Speaker 4: there were documents that will be released that backed up
- 5:17Speaker 4: all the things he said. So the odd thing about
- 5:20Speaker 4: watching a speech from a president, whether you believe what
- 5:23Speaker 4: that president says or not, whether you voted for that
- 5:26Speaker 4: president or not, is when they tell you these things
- 5:29Speaker 4: and then they tell you the receipts of what they're
- 5:31Speaker 4: saying are available later, like in the moment, you have
- 5:34Speaker 4: to digest it. But I will say that it's smart
- 5:37Speaker 4: to not decide whether or not the things that are
- 5:40Speaker 4: being said in that moment.
- 5:40Speaker 5: Are true, Like, I don't know if this is true.
- 5:43Speaker 4: And then you go look at the documents and it
- 5:45Speaker 4: was just amazing to watch mainstream media completely obliterate their
- 5:49Speaker 4: criteria that they used for so long in so many
- 5:52Speaker 4: ways to go after Trump. It's just same old, same old,
- 5:56Speaker 4: in my opinion, as far as the way that a
- 5:59Speaker 4: majority of this topic went, or a majority of this
- 6:02Speaker 4: discussion is going. And so you know, there are people
- 6:05Speaker 4: that believe the president Trump plays forty e chess. There
- 6:07Speaker 4: are people who believe that he doesn't, that he's a
- 6:09Speaker 4: bumbling moron who gets lucky some of the time. Of course,
- 6:12Speaker 4: whatever side of the political aisle you're on probably heavily
- 6:16Speaker 4: dictates how you feel about that topic and who you
- 6:18Speaker 4: believe who you don't believe. But to me, this was genius.
- 6:23Speaker 4: And I'm not saying that to be overly praising the President.
- 6:26Speaker 4: I'm just saying that because I wonder if this is
- 6:31Speaker 4: something they delayed on purpose, not because of data, but
- 6:34Speaker 4: because it's closer to the midterm elections.
- 6:36Speaker 5: We're in July.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Now, you could have waited a little more, I guess,
- 6:39Speaker 4: But maybe this will have an impact on the elections themselves.
- 6:43Speaker 4: But it's essentially demonstrating that media is incredibly biased at
- 6:48Speaker 4: the very least with the way in which they're immediately
- 6:52Speaker 4: dismissing and the fact that so many of them didn't
- 6:54Speaker 4: even er it like that was hilarious coming in watching
- 6:58Speaker 4: that yesterday and the discussion about it and how dangerous
- 7:01Speaker 4: it is. And we had a nice conversation with Brian Noonan,
- 7:05Speaker 4: who will absolutely be back next week. He is my
- 7:08Speaker 4: version of Eric Andell, a buddy of mine that I've
- 7:10Speaker 4: worked with for years in a bunch of different radio
- 7:13Speaker 4: places who thinks none of the things I think about politics,
- 7:16Speaker 4: And at times in my own brain, I'm like, how
- 7:19Speaker 4: could you possibly think that?
- 7:20Speaker 5: Dude?
- 7:21Speaker 4: I like you, I think you're smart. That's insane the
- 7:23Speaker 4: thing I heard, and he thinks the same thing about me.
- 7:25Speaker 4: So he'll be back on. But he was trying to
- 7:28Speaker 4: say yesterday, and I thought about this as I was
- 7:31Speaker 4: watching the speech last night, that it's okay to censor
- 7:34Speaker 4: the lies because Trump is a terrible person who lies
- 7:37Speaker 4: about everything, but it's okay to not care about the
- 7:40Speaker 4: lies if it's Democrats who are doing it, which is
- 7:43Speaker 4: just also insane. Like the thing, I don't know, the
- 7:47Speaker 4: thing I kept thinking, and I was thinking about playing clips.
- 7:49Speaker 4: There's so many clips you could play of everything the
- 7:51Speaker 4: President said. But here's the problem with playing clips. You
- 7:54Speaker 4: actually have homework that's assigned to you when you play those.
- 7:58Speaker 4: And what I mean by that is you got to
- 7:59Speaker 4: go look at the documents that he's referring to. You
- 8:01Speaker 4: got to read a lot of people don't like doing
- 8:03Speaker 4: the homework. So I feel like the homework part has
- 8:06Speaker 4: disqualified many, many, many people, and I'll say maybe many
- 8:10Speaker 4: again from even having a valuable opinion on this discussion
- 8:14Speaker 4: in this topic, because no matter what you think, I'll
- 8:17Speaker 4: say this last thing and then we'll probably move on.
- 8:19Speaker 4: No matter what you think about the man, if homework
- 8:22Speaker 4: is provided and you don't do the homework, you don't
- 8:25Speaker 4: have an informed opinion. You just have to accept that
- 8:28Speaker 4: that you're neglecting something. It doesn't mean that you go
- 8:32Speaker 4: look at the documents and you come to the same conclusion.
- 8:34Speaker 4: You can think whatever you want after you do the homework.
- 8:37Speaker 4: You can do I mean, this is a weird world
- 8:39Speaker 4: we live in twenty twenty six. I was going to
- 8:42Speaker 4: say you can only do math one way, but it
- 8:44Speaker 4: feels like people can do math twenty five ways now,
- 8:46Speaker 4: So go ahead, do the look at all the information,
- 8:49Speaker 4: decide what you think is true or not true about it,
- 8:52Speaker 4: and then at least we can have a conversation where
- 8:54Speaker 4: both of us know what the starting point is, because
- 8:58Speaker 4: so very often that is also very.
- 8:59Speaker 5: Much not the case.
- 9:00Speaker 4: But I don't know, to me the most valuable takeaway
- 9:03Speaker 4: of the entire thing, and I'll probably be talking about
- 9:06Speaker 4: it when I fill in on the nationally syndicated The
- 9:08Speaker 4: Data Show starting on Monday, and then I'm doing that
- 9:11Speaker 4: show for a lot of days, which can be very cool,
- 9:13Speaker 4: seven straight shows in for Data, but I'll probably be
- 9:16Speaker 4: talking a lot about what I think is incredible about
- 9:19Speaker 4: just further demonstrating the dynamic of we care about this here,
- 9:24Speaker 4: we don't care about it so much over there. All right,
- 9:27Speaker 4: we are already going to take a break. We're going
- 9:29Speaker 4: to come back from the break, and we're going to
- 9:31Speaker 4: do a little bit more discussion about some other things
- 9:33Speaker 4: in the world of mainstream news. Anyone that's not listened before.
- 9:36Speaker 4: On Friday, we take two earlier breaks in the show
- 9:40Speaker 4: so we can do a completely uninterrupted half an hour
- 9:42Speaker 4: that I call the Veteran Voices.
- 9:44Speaker 5: We bring a veteran on.
- 9:46Speaker 4: We're trying to get veterans just in Houston, and I
- 9:48Speaker 4: thought of a unique way to do that and it
- 9:50Speaker 4: seemed to work. So I have a lot of veterans
- 9:52Speaker 4: book now for like three or four months off of
- 9:55Speaker 4: something I did, and all of them are from Houston.
- 9:58Speaker 4: The veteran will be talking today is All So, a
- 10:00Speaker 4: stand up comedian, So that'll be cool. You'll get to
- 10:02Speaker 4: meet him in a little bit. But anyway, at six
- 10:04Speaker 4: thirty to seven, we do an uninterrupted, no commercial, half
- 10:08Speaker 4: hour discussion with me and a vet So for that
- 10:11Speaker 4: reason we take some earlier breaks. We got all the
- 10:13Speaker 4: commercials out of the way now. So this is Craig
- 10:15Speaker 4: Collins on the Craig Collins Show KSV seven hundred am,
- 10:19Speaker 4: The Voice of Texas.
- 10:20Speaker 5: This is the Craig.
- 10:21Speaker 4: Collins Show KSVU, the Voice of Texas. Thrilled to be
- 10:25Speaker 4: with you. So much stuff out there to talk about.
- 10:27Speaker 4: I'm going to immediately jump to our caller. We got
- 10:29Speaker 4: Bart calling in from Spring. He wants to talk about
- 10:32Speaker 4: a viral video of a woman that slapped the heck
- 10:35Speaker 4: out of a Trump supporter, a teenager.
- 10:37Speaker 5: Bart, what do you want to say?
- 10:39Speaker 3: Hey, you ever been to Ocean City, New Jersey.
- 10:42Speaker 5: Yes, I have. I'm born and raised in New Jersey.
- 10:46Speaker 1: I have.
- 10:46Speaker 5: Yes, you two, I assume.
- 10:49Speaker 3: No, I'm from upstate New York. But I was just
- 10:51Speaker 3: wonder if you any fourteen year old girls.
- 10:54Speaker 4: I've never not even when I was a little kid
- 10:56Speaker 4: growing up in New Jersey, so I would have been
- 10:58Speaker 4: younger than that.
- 10:59Speaker 5: No, I never out the fourteen year old.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Girl and she's here illegally. She overstated the visa two years. Yeah,
- 11:06Speaker 3: the attitude that we don't have to obey the laws,
- 11:08Speaker 3: it just blows my mind. Their mentality.
- 11:10Speaker 4: Yes, it is surreal in that case, and the fact
- 11:13Speaker 4: that the lady also just lapped the craput of a
- 11:15Speaker 4: teenager because he was wearing or the person was wearing
- 11:17Speaker 4: like Trump stuff, right, there was something like.
- 11:19Speaker 3: That a Trump Trump on her pants.
- 11:22Speaker 5: And Okay, yeah, it's crazy.
- 11:25Speaker 4: That person's probably going to get deported though, So that
- 11:27Speaker 4: was a I hope it was worth it in the
- 11:29Speaker 4: sense of you beat up one person and then you
- 11:31Speaker 4: went very viral.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Yeah, they sentator that Delaney Detention Center that they're all
- 11:37Speaker 3: protests and staying there on a hunger strike.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Yep.
- 11:39Speaker 3: I'm like great. I wish they'd followed through the charges
- 11:42Speaker 3: on her, not just the porter.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Sure, I get it, that makes sense. Is that the
- 11:46Speaker 4: only thing you want to talk about part or anything else?
- 11:49Speaker 3: Oh, I didn't know if you'd seen you. Who Summerly is?
- 11:52Speaker 5: Yes, I do know who Summerly is.
- 11:54Speaker 3: She's a rep from Philadelphia. She was talking about this
- 11:58Speaker 3: recent Supreme Court ruling about Biden's DEI should saying that
- 12:03Speaker 3: we should not count the MCAT scores for what goes
- 12:07Speaker 3: into medical school to become doctors. We should look more
- 12:10Speaker 3: of what race they are. And I'm like, it's.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Like we're in Yes, I can actually play that audio
- 12:17Speaker 4: if you want me to do.
- 12:19Speaker 5: Yeah, it's interesting.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Barton Spring is one of a couple of callers. I
- 12:23Speaker 4: think Jimmy X is another one. You bring up topics
- 12:26Speaker 4: and I'm like, I have I have an audio clip.
- 12:27Speaker 4: So this is sort of a bart and Spring audio
- 12:30Speaker 4: clip being played. Let's go ahead and play.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Having all white male doctors is just as bad for
- 12:36Speaker 2: the medical profession as having all white male congressmen is
- 12:40Speaker 2: to our government. We just say I have a black doctor,
- 12:42Speaker 2: and I sought my black doctor out. In fact, black
- 12:44Speaker 2: doctors are in high demand because black patients know that
- 12:49Speaker 2: culturally competent care can be the difference between care and cure,
- 12:53Speaker 2: or life and death.
- 12:54Speaker 4: I already get to stop it there, Bart. What I
- 12:56Speaker 4: find so hilarious about this is I just want a doctor.
- 12:58Speaker 5: Who's good at stuff. I don't care what they look like.
- 13:01Speaker 5: I just want them to be.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Good or their culturally competent care.
- 13:05Speaker 4: No, I'm not. I'm not worried about it at all.
- 13:07Speaker 4: I thought all care was the same, so it's like, right, yeah, no,
- 13:13Speaker 4: I thought it was hilarious. I'll tell you this. I'm
- 13:16Speaker 4: married to a Mexican woman and occasionally she wants a
- 13:18Speaker 4: doctor that can speak Spanish. But she doesn't care what
- 13:21Speaker 4: the doctor looks like, and she speaks fluent English. She's
- 13:24Speaker 4: just like, I don't know, it's a medical thing. If
- 13:26Speaker 4: I go somewhere, And the funniest thing to me, Bart,
- 13:28Speaker 4: is a bunch of times we'll get the whitest dude
- 13:31Speaker 4: doctor you've ever.
- 13:32Speaker 5: Seen in your life, fluent in Spanish.
- 13:34Speaker 4: He'll just break it in and I'm like, and it
- 13:36Speaker 4: makes me look like a jerk, by the way, that
- 13:38Speaker 4: I don't speak that good of Spanish and that this
- 13:40Speaker 4: guy does, And he's talking to my wife and I'm like,
- 13:43Speaker 4: thanks for making me feel terrible, doctor, this is great.
- 13:45Speaker 5: But yes, all the.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Time when Charlie Kirk, when he'd go on these campuses.
- 13:51Speaker 3: I remember one of the classic videos, he's debating this
- 13:54Speaker 3: kid because he said he wanted to make sure the
- 13:56Speaker 3: airlines pops pilots were competent, care what race they were, Yes,
- 14:01Speaker 3: And they got really mad at him. Yes, and I said,
- 14:04Speaker 3: called him a racist for want incompetent pilots.
- 14:06Speaker 5: Well, you know what's amazing about that?
- 14:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I remember that Charlie Kirk had said that if
- 14:11Speaker 4: he saw a black pilot walk onto a plane, he
- 14:14Speaker 4: would be concerned. And in that statement I just made
- 14:18Speaker 4: if you don't know any of the context of what
- 14:20Speaker 4: he said before or after that statement, there is an
- 14:23Speaker 4: opportunity to accuse someone of saying something racist. And they
- 14:27Speaker 4: took it just like they take it every time that
- 14:29Speaker 4: they clipped the shortest little sentence from President Trump and
- 14:31Speaker 4: pretend that it's this or that. But the truth is
- 14:35Speaker 4: Charlie Kirk was debating a student talking about DEI itself
- 14:38Speaker 4: and saying, because DEI asks for people to be hired
- 14:42Speaker 4: based on their race and not based on their skill set.
- 14:46Speaker 4: The thought of DEI would inspire Charlie Kirk to wonder
- 14:49Speaker 4: if someone was qualified if they walked onto a plane
- 14:53Speaker 4: and looked a certain way. If DEI did not exist,
- 14:56Speaker 4: it would not be a thought that would go through
- 14:58Speaker 4: his mind. It's not because he's a racist or he
- 15:01Speaker 4: thinks black people can't be pilots. It's very, very simplistically
- 15:05Speaker 4: because DEI is begging us to hire people that are
- 15:08Speaker 4: less qualified than others based solely on race. Just like
- 15:11Speaker 4: this woman that you had me play the audio is
- 15:13Speaker 4: talking about with a doctor. She's picking a doctor because
- 15:17Speaker 4: of what they look like. That is idiotic. I don't
- 15:19Speaker 4: care what my doctor looks like. I want them to
- 15:22Speaker 4: be good at medicine.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Yeah, go ahead, especially if they're going to make up
- 15:25Speaker 3: a Supreme Court justice.
- 15:26Speaker 4: Right, sure, whatever it is, whatever the role. And actually,
- 15:30Speaker 4: you know what, I've said that a lot. It's funny
- 15:32Speaker 4: you say that, And I gotta take a break in
- 15:34Speaker 4: a little bit. And then we got to bring on
- 15:36Speaker 4: our very cool veteran stand up comedian guest who's going
- 15:39Speaker 4: to be jumping on. But what's funny is if they
- 15:42Speaker 4: hadn't told me, and if Biden hadn't said I'm gonna
- 15:44Speaker 4: find a black woman to put on the Supreme Court,
- 15:47Speaker 4: it would have been less likely that you question the
- 15:50Speaker 4: qualification of someone when he inevitably finds a black woman.
- 15:53Speaker 4: The biggest thing I've said to the left all the
- 15:55Speaker 4: time is stop saying the part out loud that you
- 15:58Speaker 4: want political points for, and then we don't have to
- 16:01Speaker 4: debate it the same way. But they always want the
- 16:03Speaker 4: political points, so they always say it.
- 16:06Speaker 3: So yeah, let's go have a good.
- 16:08Speaker 5: Break, all right, Thank you very much, Barton Spring, You're awesome.
- 16:11Speaker 4: Thanks for calling it again as always and queuing up
- 16:13Speaker 4: some audio which now you and Jimmy X are guys
- 16:16Speaker 4: that for some reason continue to be capable of referencing
- 16:20Speaker 4: audio that I have. Sorry, we're going to take another break.
- 16:23Speaker 4: After the break, we are going to do a half
- 16:25Speaker 4: an hour uninterrupted. We're calling it, as I do very often,
- 16:28Speaker 4: the Veteran Voices segment. So I'm thrilled to do it
- 16:32Speaker 4: and actually really happy with who we got for this
- 16:35Speaker 4: week because it's a very different sort of chat.
- 16:38Speaker 5: Blake Jones is the guy's name. He is a stand
- 16:40Speaker 5: up comedian in Houston.
- 16:42Speaker 4: He's also a marine veteran so we will talk about
- 16:44Speaker 4: the Marines, we'll talk about doing stand up here, we'll
- 16:46Speaker 4: do all kinds of stuff, and I'll also probably admit
- 16:50Speaker 4: how I found him and how we're going to get
- 16:52Speaker 4: a bunch of veterans that live in Houston on this
- 16:54Speaker 4: show over the next few weeks. So we'll take a break.
- 16:57Speaker 4: We'll come back in about three minutes. This is the
- 16:59Speaker 4: Voice of Texas KSV seven hundred. This is the Craig
- 17:02Speaker 4: Collins Show KSCV, the Voice of Texas. Thrilled to be
- 17:06Speaker 4: with you. Just messing with some things technology wise, so
- 17:09Speaker 4: we can see both of us because I have a
- 17:11Speaker 4: comedian in studio with me. How are you doing there?
- 17:14Speaker 4: Oh wait, make sure that your mike is that you
- 17:16Speaker 4: got to hit that red button in front of you.
- 17:18Speaker 1: There we go. Are we live?
- 17:20Speaker 5: Yes, we are.
- 17:20Speaker 1: I appreciate it, Greig, Thanks for having me in.
- 17:22Speaker 5: Thanks you are. Your name is Blake Jones. How long
- 17:24Speaker 5: have you been a comedian?
- 17:26Speaker 1: I've been in Houston about three years now doing comedy
- 17:29Speaker 1: a total of twelve. I took a few years off
- 17:31Speaker 1: we'll call it seven eight total, did a sabbatical fur bits. Yeah,
- 17:35Speaker 1: So how long were you in the military. I just
- 17:37Speaker 1: I did like four and a half. I extended for
- 17:39Speaker 1: a bit, but I four years four to eight. I
- 17:41Speaker 1: was in the Marine Corps station war in San Diego.
- 17:43Speaker 5: Okay, you weren't deployed, Tony.
- 17:46Speaker 1: I got station orders right out of school, so I
- 17:48Speaker 1: got bas ops orders. Yeah, so work like the bottom
- 17:51Speaker 1: side of air drive control called flight ops.
- 17:53Speaker 4: So the first thing I want to do, and this
- 17:54Speaker 4: is probably the only time I'm going to do it,
- 17:56Speaker 4: Let's call it one off, and I apologize for taking
- 17:58Speaker 4: a couple of minutes of your time to do it.
- 18:00Speaker 4: I want to talk about how I found you as
- 18:02Speaker 4: a guest for the show. I went to a Facebook
- 18:05Speaker 4: page for veterans in Houston, and I assume you like
- 18:08Speaker 4: that page. I assume a lot of people want okay,
- 18:10Speaker 4: and it's got like eighteen thousand people, and by and large,
- 18:13Speaker 4: I think everybody in there is a VET. And I
- 18:14Speaker 4: just put up a message. I'm like, hey, I'm a
- 18:17Speaker 4: radio host. I'm trying to connect to veterans. Anybody want
- 18:20Speaker 4: to come on. I got crushed with notifications of people
- 18:23Speaker 4: that want.
- 18:24Speaker 5: To be on the show.
- 18:24Speaker 4: I love that, not even just the ones that were commenting,
- 18:28Speaker 4: but like, I got a bunch of emails too.
- 18:29Speaker 5: I think that's something unique to.
- 18:31Speaker 4: Veterans, and I kind of wanted you to talk about
- 18:33Speaker 4: that to begin with, because you reached out to me
- 18:35Speaker 4: very quickly. You're like, Hey, I'm a comedian, I'm in town.
- 18:38Speaker 4: What do you think And I'm like, dude, that'd be awesome.
- 18:39Speaker 4: It's a different avenue for a discussion. But also just
- 18:42Speaker 4: the willingness for vets to come on and a lot
- 18:45Speaker 4: of people don't really know where the direction of the
- 18:47Speaker 4: conversation is going to go, but you guys want to
- 18:50Speaker 4: do it, So what is that part of your makeup?
- 18:53Speaker 1: The veteran community is the most supportive community I've ever
- 18:57Speaker 1: been a part of. Like you put anything, like you'll
- 18:59Speaker 1: see people asking for help with with anything, business starting,
- 19:02Speaker 1: you know, I'm laid on rent whatever, and everybody jumps
- 19:06Speaker 1: just it's just it's it's one of those things you
- 19:10Speaker 1: can do. You know. Everybody wants to complain about the
- 19:12Speaker 1: VA and oh, there's no help, but the veteran community
- 19:15Speaker 1: takes care of its own like like no other. It's
- 19:18Speaker 1: one of the beautiful things to see.
- 19:20Speaker 5: It's great.
- 19:20Speaker 4: One of the people that I interviewed when I was
- 19:21Speaker 4: doing this segment in a different state at a different
- 19:24Speaker 4: radio station is a CBE and he said, there's some
- 19:26Speaker 4: special Facebook for CBS from the Navy, and they'll all
- 19:29Speaker 4: just do that. And like you just said, he said,
- 19:32Speaker 4: he broke down in some state he didn't live in,
- 19:34Speaker 4: and he went to the Facebook pages, like, Hey, my
- 19:35Speaker 4: car broke down. Three CBS showed up and they helped
- 19:37Speaker 4: to fix his car.
- 19:39Speaker 5: Like it's just crazy.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Even when I when I first started comedy, it was
- 19:42Speaker 1: the same thing. I went to move to California, I
- 19:46Speaker 1: lost the job and meet like something fell through and
- 19:49Speaker 1: I just put on there. I was like, hey, I'm
- 19:50Speaker 1: a veteran and blah blah blah looking for work. I
- 19:52Speaker 1: had three job offers within six hours. Like it's it's
- 19:55Speaker 1: just one of those things. It's so supportive and it's
- 19:58Speaker 1: so cool.
- 19:58Speaker 4: Okay, So if you you don't mind, part of what
- 20:00Speaker 4: I like to do in these segments is just try
- 20:02Speaker 4: to figure out why people were inspired to join the
- 20:05Speaker 4: military and why you specifically chose the branch that you chose.
- 20:08Speaker 5: So how old were you when you joined the Marines.
- 20:10Speaker 1: I went right out of high school eighteen eighteen, so
- 20:12Speaker 1: why I'm old nine to eleven? Had just happened right
- 20:16Speaker 1: the year before we were I remember the day I
- 20:19Speaker 1: signed was the day the shak and all was taken
- 20:21Speaker 1: off on online or on the news. Back then it
- 20:24Speaker 1: wasn't even online. Yeah, but just you know, I grew
- 20:27Speaker 1: up in the Midwest. It was a very rare in Indiana,
- 20:30Speaker 1: southern Indiana, so you know, coming from a military family.
- 20:34Speaker 1: My dad's generation, those guys didn't really go but Grandpa's
- 20:37Speaker 1: that everybody else had been been in some form of
- 20:40Speaker 1: the military. Nobody had joined the Marine Corps since Vietnam.
- 20:43Speaker 1: My uncle Ronnie had joined the Marine since it was
- 20:46Speaker 1: that one. Oh you can't do it as too. Yeah.
- 20:47Speaker 1: I was like, okay, yeah, oh I can't do it.
- 20:50Speaker 5: Yeah, fine.
- 20:52Speaker 1: It was honestly it was fate. I was. We were
- 20:54Speaker 1: moving back to Indiana so I could graduate. We were
- 20:56Speaker 1: living in Phoenix at the time, and I was I
- 20:58Speaker 1: didn't do the English homework, but the class wasn't transferring back,
- 21:01Speaker 1: so I was sure, you get in the hall, you're
- 21:02Speaker 1: not doing a Marine walks by. Staff Startin White was
- 21:06Speaker 1: a recruiter and my grandpa father was also staff Startan White,
- 21:09Speaker 1: but he was in the Air Force. And I'm like,
- 21:11Speaker 1: this is this is just meant to be at that point.
- 21:14Speaker 5: Yeah, that's awesome, dude.
- 21:16Speaker 4: And so if you had other family members that weren't Marines,
- 21:19Speaker 4: did they crap on you for picking the Marines?
- 21:21Speaker 5: Is that a thing that happened?
- 21:22Speaker 1: No, Honestly, the only one my stepdad's father, he was
- 21:28Speaker 1: he was army, and he was the only one, like you,
- 21:29Speaker 1: sure you want to do it, but like, yeah, no,
- 21:32Speaker 1: most of them.
- 21:33Speaker 4: So the way the reason I ask you is that
- 21:36Speaker 4: my late grandfather was army and all three of his
- 21:38Speaker 4: sons wound up going Marines, all of my.
- 21:40Speaker 5: Uncles, and he hated it. He would crap all.
- 21:43Speaker 4: The time, crapping them, and they'd crapping him back. I've
- 21:45Speaker 4: heard more crayon jokes, which I think you understand. Okay,
- 21:47Speaker 4: of course, Flavor, apparently every veteran out there who understands
- 21:52Speaker 4: that joke. I heard more crayon jokes than I ever understood,
- 21:54Speaker 4: as like a four year old kid, and I'd be walking.
- 21:56Speaker 5: Around like does my uncle eat crayons? I think he does.
- 21:59Speaker 4: But anyway, so you joined the military, you get stationed
- 22:02Speaker 4: where you get stationed. I've asked this to other veterans
- 22:05Speaker 4: that joined around when you did that didn't wind up
- 22:07Speaker 4: getting deployed to action. Were you at all disappointed?
- 22:12Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, it's one of those things I didn't realize
- 22:14Speaker 1: you could get depression from time.
- 22:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Yeah, it took me years to get to get comfortable.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Especially joining the Marine Corps at that time you assume
- 22:24Speaker 1: going yeah, and it's you miss out on it right,
- 22:27Speaker 1: Like it was. I felt like I was missing something.
- 22:30Speaker 1: I felt like the mission wasn't complete for for a
- 22:33Speaker 1: long long time. And wow, you know, just talking with
- 22:35Speaker 1: other veterans and that that's again where the supportive group
- 22:38Speaker 1: comes in there. No, man, you're a marine, you know
- 22:40Speaker 1: and all that. But it was like, no, it messed
- 22:42Speaker 1: me up for years of not getting to well.
- 22:44Speaker 4: And one of the things that I found very interesting,
- 22:46Speaker 4: I've talked to a lot of vets that didn't serve
- 22:48Speaker 4: and even vets well didn't serve in that capacity, I
- 22:50Speaker 4: should say, because everybody serves but didn't serve in that
- 22:52Speaker 4: capacity where you were asked to go fight, and a
- 22:54Speaker 4: lot of them have the same reaction you do. And
- 22:56Speaker 4: I find that many of them wind up being very
- 22:58Speaker 4: active in the veteran community. This is almost your way
- 23:00Speaker 4: to extend your service and I wonder if for you,
- 23:04Speaker 4: because I found that a lot of vets have an
- 23:06Speaker 4: outlet specifically where they're doing that. Is that the reason
- 23:09Speaker 4: for comedy is comedy military specific or do you leave
- 23:13Speaker 4: that at the door? How do you do that?
- 23:14Speaker 1: No, I definitely talk about especially in Texas. Sure when
- 23:17Speaker 1: I was doing stand up in San Francisco, didn't matter
- 23:19Speaker 1: as the veteran thing. But no, I think it's it's
- 23:22Speaker 1: a way to instantly ingratiate your yourself with people, right,
- 23:26Speaker 1: to get them on your side. And honestly, like a
- 23:28Speaker 1: lot of what I do is I'm not a storytelling comic,
- 23:31Speaker 1: but I am telling my story through jokes a lot
- 23:34Speaker 1: of a lot of everything that happened. Obviously it's embellished,
- 23:36Speaker 1: we're taking taking it and turning it up to eleven,
- 23:40Speaker 1: but a lot of it is real life based, so
- 23:43Speaker 1: you know you have to include the military.
- 23:44Speaker 4: Are there are there military stories that come up as Joe, oh, yeah,
- 23:48Speaker 4: you do you have.
- 23:48Speaker 5: I'm not trying to make you do your I know.
- 23:50Speaker 1: I am not a peach comp No, I know.
- 23:53Speaker 4: And I was also gonna say I hate when during
- 23:55Speaker 4: an interview like I'm just trying to set you up
- 23:56Speaker 4: to do your stand up in the studio.
- 23:58Speaker 5: That's not the intention.
- 23:59Speaker 4: But I'm curious if you could try to clean up
- 24:01Speaker 4: a story that you use somehow and.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Why no hmmm, so obviously, well.
- 24:08Speaker 4: Actually, yeah, let me ask you it this way before
- 24:10Speaker 4: you do it. When you're in the Marines. Is part
- 24:12Speaker 4: of you thinking I'm gonna be a comedian at some point.
- 24:14Speaker 1: I had no idea it was even a thing you
- 24:16Speaker 1: could do. Okay, okay, it was. It was one of
- 24:19Speaker 1: those like they did the first UFC fight on base.
- 24:22Speaker 1: They did it at Miramar, where I was stationed. So
- 24:24Speaker 1: I got to go and we met Joe Rogan at
- 24:26Speaker 1: the time. He uh you know. I ended up getting
- 24:29Speaker 1: on his website and found out I watched his third
- 24:32Speaker 1: podcast live because I was I was just connected that way. Sure,
- 24:36Speaker 1: and they started talking about open mics. I was like, wait,
- 24:38Speaker 1: people can just try comedy. I had no idea. I
- 24:41Speaker 1: grew up in the middle of like nine towns, went
- 24:42Speaker 1: to my high school. I graduated ninety people in the
- 24:45Speaker 1: middle of nowhere. I thought stand up was just famous
- 24:47Speaker 1: people talking. I thought they let them.
- 24:49Speaker 5: I was like, oh, that's the clan I can do.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, And I was like, wait, you can just
- 24:52Speaker 1: try that. I was like, oh, I'm in, I'm in.
- 24:54Speaker 1: I'd gotten out of the military, I moved home. I
- 24:57Speaker 1: was programming robots in a factory, just writing jokes at night,
- 25:00Speaker 1: like I'm gonna move to San Francisco and I'll want
- 25:02Speaker 1: to tell jokes.
- 25:02Speaker 4: So yeah, well, and I was also wondering, obviously, the
- 25:05Speaker 4: way you're trained in the military, your brain has been
- 25:08Speaker 4: rewired to accept certain situations as like, oh, yeah, I
- 25:11Speaker 4: could do that. This is a weird way to ask.
- 25:14Speaker 4: But is that something that helps with comedy early on, because,
- 25:16Speaker 4: like I know, it's mentally somewhat brutal for a lot
- 25:19Speaker 4: of people to figure out how to approach it. I
- 25:22Speaker 4: feel like you've done something much more mentally difficult already.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it's that I always had a performance side based
- 25:29Speaker 1: to me, you know, growing up in choir and doing
- 25:32Speaker 1: the plays and stuff. You do it whatever, you know.
- 25:34Speaker 1: I was always one of the stars. But I think
- 25:37Speaker 1: it gets you just comfortable in who you are. And
- 25:39Speaker 1: I think that's the hardest part to learn as a
- 25:41Speaker 1: comedian is beating yourself on stage. Right. They say, they
- 25:45Speaker 1: always say it takes you ten years to find your
- 25:46Speaker 1: voice or however, they want to say it. I feel
- 25:48Speaker 1: like Vets have an easier time with that because we're
- 25:51Speaker 1: comfortable in our skin. I'm not going up there faking
- 25:54Speaker 1: who I am. I'm going to tell you what I
- 25:55Speaker 1: think and how it feel as well.
- 25:57Speaker 4: In the Marines, you can ask I can ask you this,
- 25:59Speaker 4: and you can tell me how accurate is because I've've
- 26:01Speaker 4: heard all different kinds of answers to this. Part of
- 26:03Speaker 4: the Marines is like, they're supposed to tear you down
- 26:04Speaker 4: to build you back up. And so if that were
- 26:07Speaker 4: to happen to someone, I feel like the person you
- 26:09Speaker 4: come back out of that as built up is you.
- 26:12Speaker 1: OK. And boot Camp's is the funniest place in the
- 26:15Speaker 1: world anyway. Oh yeah, it's Look it's terrible while you're there,
- 26:19Speaker 1: but there's a lot of laughter we had. It's one
- 26:22Speaker 1: of those things you always look back at like, oh,
- 26:24Speaker 1: I wish i could do it again, But then you
- 26:25Speaker 1: also have nightmares of I'm getting drug back on base
- 26:28Speaker 1: or shaving my beard.
- 26:31Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like, you know what I think is interesting.
- 26:33Speaker 4: I've been around a lot of vets who either serve
- 26:36Speaker 4: together or didn't serve together, but all seem to have
- 26:39Speaker 4: a similar understanding of something and the jokes that they
- 26:42Speaker 4: tell each other. I wonder where you're at in the
- 26:46Speaker 4: line of vets, not on a stage joking with other veterans,
- 26:50Speaker 4: and then whatever you're actually saying on stage. I imagine,
- 26:53Speaker 4: whatever your version of blue is, it's still bluer.
- 26:56Speaker 5: In the world you can go into.
- 26:57Speaker 1: I can go there. Okay, it's it's it's not what
- 27:01Speaker 1: I do. Like, I'm not the comedian that's doing the
- 27:04Speaker 1: we got to talk about the dead baby joke? How far? No,
- 27:09Speaker 1: it's like, be real, but just be yourself, you know
- 27:11Speaker 1: what I mean? Like, it's just talk about real life.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Like that's the thing. Every comedian, I feel like fails
- 27:17Speaker 1: at this. They don't talk about their real life, what's
- 27:19Speaker 1: really happening, what they really know. And that's what allows
- 27:23Speaker 1: you to pivot and work in between things because your
- 27:26Speaker 1: act is always evolving, you're always changing, right, and just
- 27:29Speaker 1: talk about that.
- 27:30Speaker 4: Has there been any cool interactions you've had with vets
- 27:32Speaker 4: after a show?
- 27:34Speaker 1: Oh? Almost every show almost because one of the you know,
- 27:38Speaker 1: I talk about one of the things that anytime you
- 27:42Speaker 1: tell people you're a VET, they always have the queste,
- 27:44Speaker 1: now did you you know?
- 27:45Speaker 5: Yeah? Yeah, I don't know why.
- 27:49Speaker 1: I don't know, DoD do you wise count? You know
- 27:50Speaker 1: what I mean? But after you know, telling that on
- 27:55Speaker 1: stage and then everybody comes up to you after and
- 27:57Speaker 1: a lot of it's, oh, yeah, my grandpa was in
- 28:00Speaker 1: the Navy, and and then it's like, don't worry, brother,
- 28:03Speaker 1: I got your six. It's a lot of those guys
- 28:05Speaker 1: after show.
- 28:06Speaker 5: Those guys are kind of awesome.
- 28:07Speaker 1: But no. Veterans are super thankful. They love having somebody
- 28:11Speaker 1: that you know, from from their walk of life that's
- 28:14Speaker 1: doing something that they admire they want to do. Yeah,
- 28:16Speaker 1: I have a lot of vets. I run an open
- 28:19Speaker 1: mic every Thursday at the Mood Room here in Houston, Okay,
- 28:22Speaker 1: And so a lot of vets come to me to
- 28:23Speaker 1: try for their first time and do stuff like that.
- 28:26Speaker 5: Where's the room.
- 28:27Speaker 1: It's at seven eleven Milby. It's in the Iron Works Building.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Nice.
- 28:30Speaker 5: You have a show tonight?
- 28:32Speaker 1: Did you I do? Yeah? I run the Dirty Show
- 28:34Speaker 1: every Friday night at Secret Group at midnight. Yeah.
- 28:37Speaker 5: Where is the Secret Group?
- 28:38Speaker 1: It is on Polk It's right U youto.
- 28:41Speaker 5: Okay.
- 28:42Speaker 1: It's called the Dirty Show, The Dirty Show?
- 28:44Speaker 5: What makes it the I gotta I have to ask
- 28:46Speaker 5: I feel.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Like, yeah, it's it's just it's no holds barred comics.
- 28:49Speaker 1: It's like, hey, walking, you're gonna hear everything we tell
- 28:54Speaker 1: comics when they come to do it. Don't just be
- 28:56Speaker 1: you Like, it doesn't have to be dirty, you don't
- 28:58Speaker 1: have to to go harder. But like all so there's
- 29:00Speaker 1: no restrictions. It's not a seven PM show with kids
- 29:03Speaker 1: in it, right, you know what I mean? Like you
- 29:04Speaker 1: can go off and you're gonna you.
- 29:07Speaker 4: Know, it's what's funny you say about that. So I've
- 29:09Speaker 4: worked at a lot of other radio stations in it.
- 29:10Speaker 4: Some you have these consultants who will like tell you
- 29:12Speaker 4: what to do. And I remember a consultant being like, hey,
- 29:16Speaker 4: sometimes like shock, things are great in my world, in
- 29:20Speaker 4: your world, but don't do them. To do them Like,
- 29:22Speaker 4: people can see through that immediately. If you're up there
- 29:25Speaker 4: and you're saying something that you'd never say in a
- 29:28Speaker 4: way you'd never say it, it's not going to land
- 29:30Speaker 4: the same as if.
- 29:31Speaker 5: It's actually a part of who you are.
- 29:33Speaker 4: So I imagine that's what you're saying, is that a
- 29:35Speaker 4: lot of people should just find a way to deliver
- 29:37Speaker 4: whatever the things are that they're talking about. How much
- 29:39Speaker 4: of your show do you think is about your experience
- 29:42Speaker 4: as a VET?
- 29:44Speaker 1: A very little. I mean it, it was a four
- 29:46Speaker 1: year period of my life, so like a lot of it. Yeah,
- 29:49Speaker 1: there are things that I feel like it set me
- 29:52Speaker 1: up for the rest of life though, so it is
- 29:53Speaker 1: intrinsically part of every other bit of who I've I've
- 29:57Speaker 1: become since then. Sure, But as far as telling like veterans,
- 30:01Speaker 1: like if I'm doing a ten minute set, let's say,
- 30:03Speaker 1: which I'll probably I'll probably do fifteen to night. Out
- 30:05Speaker 1: of that fifteen, maybe three to four minutes of it
- 30:09Speaker 1: is veteran based. But I feel like every story I
- 30:12Speaker 1: have also ties back to just who I am as
- 30:14Speaker 1: a person, which the military made me.
- 30:16Speaker 4: Yeah, thirty percent of the show, though, if you're doing
- 30:19Speaker 4: four to fifteen minutes, you're getting pretty close to what
- 30:22Speaker 4: is the rest of the show about. Tell me what
- 30:23Speaker 4: else you do?
- 30:24Speaker 1: It's sex?
- 30:26Speaker 5: Okay we are on live radio?
- 30:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I gotcha? Is that is that the appropriate term?
- 30:31Speaker 4: Or you could say, like you know women that you
- 30:33Speaker 4: found Yeah, well they're fine, Yeah exactly, ladies the fair
- 30:36Speaker 4: or sex? Can you give me any sort of pieces
- 30:40Speaker 4: of what you talk about or preview something.
- 30:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I would say, Like one thing I talk about
- 30:45Speaker 1: is it's a story with my buddy we called him
- 30:48Speaker 1: text Craig d you Hannam. He passed away back in
- 30:52Speaker 1: twenty ten, one of my best friends of life, and
- 30:55Speaker 1: I tell a story about him having to check me
- 30:59Speaker 1: for sexually transmitted disease the military. Yeah. Yeah, I didn't
- 31:05Speaker 1: know this was the thing. Yeah.
- 31:07Speaker 5: Yeah, he had to do a medical check of you correct, yes.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Uh and and I go through that story and it
- 31:15Speaker 1: is one of it's one of the funniest days of
- 31:17Speaker 1: my life. Uh yeah. It was just, you know, a
- 31:20Speaker 1: way to honor him as well. There you go.
- 31:22Speaker 4: That's that's amazing. Why did that have to happen? Was
- 31:25Speaker 4: he a medical guy or no?
- 31:27Speaker 1: No, no, I just trusted him. I was like, if
- 31:30Speaker 1: anybody will know, it'll be tech. He was. He was
- 31:34Speaker 1: one of the smart ones. He was He was a
- 31:36Speaker 1: giant Texas redneck from out in Fredericksburg and he was
- 31:40Speaker 1: just he was one of the smartest, kindest people I
- 31:43Speaker 1: knew U. And he was one of the I t
- 31:46Speaker 1: guys honestly, but those people, I would say, and I
- 31:51Speaker 1: trust him. He was my best friend. I was like,
- 31:53Speaker 1: if anybody will know, it'll be him.
- 31:55Speaker 5: Did the result go well, yeah, yeah, we're good.
- 31:58Speaker 1: We're good.
- 31:59Speaker 4: Just about that part. That's you know, it's amazing about
- 32:02Speaker 4: that too. So I'll say something and it's a different
- 32:04Speaker 4: art form. It's not comedy, but I've known a lot
- 32:07Speaker 4: of guys who got into like painting, or they got
- 32:09Speaker 4: into something else, and you see the catharsis in what
- 32:12Speaker 4: they do and how they represent the things that they
- 32:15Speaker 4: went through. And a lot of what I've found is actually,
- 32:17Speaker 4: in some way it's connected to some person they served
- 32:20Speaker 4: with who's no longer here. And they're no longer here
- 32:23Speaker 4: for a variety of reasons. Either it's someone that you
- 32:24Speaker 4: went to combat with who died in action, or in
- 32:27Speaker 4: a lot of cases, unfortunately, there are people who passed
- 32:30Speaker 4: away back at home and several of them I've talked
- 32:33Speaker 4: about it before. I think it's twenty two veterans a day,
- 32:35Speaker 4: and that number changes all the time commit suicide. And
- 32:39Speaker 4: so one thing I've found that's really amazing, and you
- 32:41Speaker 4: just said it a second ago, is these ways to
- 32:43Speaker 4: honor people, these ways to have them live through something
- 32:47Speaker 4: not just a story, but something that concretely exists. In
- 32:50Speaker 4: your case, it's probably the video of the stand up
- 32:53Speaker 4: thing you've done.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, And it's it's you know, we're all an
- 32:56Speaker 1: amalgamation of everybody we've met through our lives. Sure, finding
- 33:00Speaker 1: a way to tell their stories, especially if they're no
- 33:03Speaker 1: longer here to tell them too. And yeah, that that
- 33:06Speaker 1: honoring your brothers man. It's it's I think everybody needs
- 33:10Speaker 1: some sort of outlet. I found mine in comedy. And
- 33:13Speaker 1: you mentioned, you know, painting and drawing, whatever, whatever it is,
- 33:16Speaker 1: go out there and chase that too. Like, give give
- 33:20Speaker 1: that creative side of whoever you are, whether it be woodworking, whatever,
- 33:24Speaker 1: give it enough attention, right, I think it can help
- 33:27Speaker 1: you through everything is building something and creating something.
- 33:30Speaker 5: Now, amen, I think that's true too.
- 33:32Speaker 4: One of the things I've I've heard, and I'd love
- 33:34Speaker 4: for you to tell me a little bit about this
- 33:35Speaker 4: is the veterans who for whatever reason just wind up
- 33:39Speaker 4: kind of spending a lot of time alone.
- 33:40Speaker 5: And they spend a lot of time alone.
- 33:42Speaker 4: In a way where maybe they're they're letting some things
- 33:44Speaker 4: go around them in their life. And how bad of
- 33:47Speaker 4: a whole that is to get in And it seems
- 33:50Speaker 4: like one of the things that maybe comedy provides you
- 33:52Speaker 4: is this opportunity to go be somewhere and to be
- 33:54Speaker 4: doing something around people in general. But I've heard from
- 33:58Speaker 4: a lot of vets that, and especially the veterans who
- 34:00Speaker 4: are trying to help other veterans. You need to find
- 34:02Speaker 4: a way to disrupt that learned pattern. And actually I'll
- 34:06Speaker 4: ask it to you this way. I'm sorry it's a
- 34:07Speaker 4: long question, but I'll ask it to you this way
- 34:09Speaker 4: because I've had a veteran say it exactly like this.
- 34:12Speaker 4: You're trained to live this life like in the military.
- 34:15Speaker 4: They teach you how to do something that then is
- 34:18Speaker 4: directly harming you once you leave the military in your
- 34:22Speaker 4: back in civilian life, because it's a mentality that you
- 34:25Speaker 4: have to break of all the ways you can survive
- 34:27Speaker 4: on your own and be alone, etc.
- 34:29Speaker 1: Right, Look, comedy, it's a solo game. Yeah, you're up
- 34:33Speaker 1: there alone. You've got to be comfortable. It's being alone
- 34:35Speaker 1: and a lot of it's it's sitting with your notebook
- 34:37Speaker 1: and going through the thoughts and getting into those dark places.
- 34:40Speaker 1: It's not fun sometimes. Right, it looks great up there,
- 34:43Speaker 1: it looks like you're just talking. It looks like all this,
- 34:46Speaker 1: But but breaking that training like look, yeah, and I
- 34:51Speaker 1: think it just men in general aren't comfortable asking for
- 34:54Speaker 1: help or aren't comfortable being like, hey, this is what's
- 34:57Speaker 1: going on. And I think stand Up forced me to
- 34:59Speaker 1: be like, hey, this is what's happening in my life.
- 35:01Speaker 1: And getting it out on stage is a little bit
- 35:04Speaker 1: easier because it's it's an act, right, But a lot
- 35:07Speaker 1: of a lot of it's based in reality. So how
- 35:10Speaker 1: do you break it? Sometimes you just got to man up.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Sometimes that's the only answer, is to man up and
- 35:16Speaker 1: do the hard thing.
- 35:16Speaker 4: Sure, well, you know it's interesting too, because you said
- 35:18Speaker 4: that you're sitting with a notebook and you're writing what
- 35:20Speaker 4: eventually will be jokes that entertain people, make them laugh,
- 35:23Speaker 4: and that can spiral into a darker place. Is there
- 35:26Speaker 4: a benefit to training your brain to find the humor
- 35:29Speaker 4: in this? Like you you're writing a story like how
- 35:31Speaker 4: is this funny? And then maybe you find it?
- 35:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean there's humor in everything. I I've laughed
- 35:36Speaker 1: harder at funerals than I've laughed anywhere else. I think, Right,
- 35:39Speaker 1: And you have to you just have to. Sure, you know,
- 35:43Speaker 1: we can all sit and wallow, but what's that going
- 35:45Speaker 1: to get you? You know, go go find the fun
- 35:48Speaker 1: find find the sure, find the funny in anything you know. Yeah,
- 35:52Speaker 1: and it's there.
- 35:52Speaker 5: So why Texas? What made you pick here?
- 35:54Speaker 1: I actually I used a VA benefit to get down here.
- 35:58Speaker 1: I didn't. Yeah, became a cloud engineer. So there was
- 36:02Speaker 1: this program it may still be running, it may lost fundy.
- 36:05Speaker 1: It was called vet Tech and they would send you
- 36:07Speaker 1: to coding boot camps. And I got a job offer
- 36:09Speaker 1: down here.
- 36:10Speaker 5: So you still have a day job.
- 36:12Speaker 1: No, no, no, longer full time comedian for the last year.
- 36:15Speaker 5: How's that been going.
- 36:15Speaker 1: It's it's not glamorous yet, but it's it's the most fun.
- 36:19Speaker 1: I'm so thankful. It's you know, I'm getting a lot
- 36:23Speaker 1: of great opportunities. I run the Roast Battle League here
- 36:26Speaker 1: now as well.
- 36:27Speaker 4: So well not because you've now mentioned like seven things,
- 36:30Speaker 4: let's go through that.
- 36:30Speaker 5: What are all the things that you do? So let's
- 36:33Speaker 5: promote everything.
- 36:34Speaker 1: Yes, yes, Dirty Show is the main show every Friday
- 36:37Speaker 1: night at Secret Group. I'm one of the paid regulars there.
- 36:40Speaker 5: Cool.
- 36:41Speaker 1: I also run the local Roast Battle League. That's a
- 36:44Speaker 1: monthly show where we if you know what comedy roast are,
- 36:49Speaker 1: it's but it's in battle form. We get comedians from
- 36:52Speaker 1: Houston to battle comedians from Austin or Dallas or you
- 36:55Speaker 1: know where is that at that. I am looking for
- 36:59Speaker 1: a new location currently. I believe there's a new comedy
- 37:04Speaker 1: club open up. Mike Ryan, I'm going to pitch you
- 37:06Speaker 1: right now. I want this at the Pink Flamingo Comedy Club,
- 37:10Speaker 1: which will be open here in August. Mike's amazing comedian
- 37:14Speaker 1: and he's cool. He's opening in his own club comedy
- 37:17Speaker 1: and Houston is exploding right now. We got two new clubs,
- 37:20Speaker 1: possibly a third coming within the next month.
- 37:23Speaker 4: So okay, So Dirty Show, Roast, Battle, mood Room, mood Room,
- 37:28Speaker 4: and the mood Room is also tonight or no.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Mood Room is every Thursday eight and that's an open mic.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Anybody can come to that. Try its veterans. Please reach
- 37:37Speaker 1: out to me on social media, tell me you want
- 37:39Speaker 1: to come through. We'll get you up there, get you
- 37:41Speaker 1: to try it. It doesn't matter what.
- 37:42Speaker 4: It is you're them. Okay, have you watched somebody really bomb?
- 37:46Speaker 4: I imagine I've really bombed.
- 37:49Speaker 1: I've gotten a chair thrown at me on stage. That's
- 37:51Speaker 1: why it was a one night stand show, talking about
- 37:55Speaker 1: you know one night stands with people, and a woman
- 37:57Speaker 1: just did not she did not like herself, Like I'm
- 38:00Speaker 1: still friends with this lady today, but she got She was.
- 38:03Speaker 4: Very up because a part of me was thinking that
- 38:05Speaker 4: that was the lady. Yeah, stand lady, she had a
- 38:07Speaker 4: chair all of a sudden, that's awesome.
- 38:10Speaker 1: But yeah, people people bomb all like a lot of people.
- 38:13Speaker 1: They they refuse to understand what a real bomb is.
- 38:18Speaker 1: A real bomb isn't a bad set in an open mind,
- 38:21Speaker 1: nobody's there to hear it. It's not about a bomb.
- 38:24Speaker 1: There's four hundred people in the audience and you got nothing,
- 38:27Speaker 1: you know what I mean.
- 38:28Speaker 5: Actually, my favorite I don't know, who are some of
- 38:30Speaker 5: your idols in the world of comedy.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Oh idols? Paterse O'Neil. It will always be number one.
- 38:35Speaker 1: If he had lived, I think he would have been
- 38:36Speaker 1: the greatest comic to ever touch a stage. We were
- 38:40Speaker 1: really ripped from something there. Chappelle.
- 38:43Speaker 4: Obviously, I was wondering if Sapelle was gonna come up
- 38:45Speaker 4: because I I remember joking one of his recent specials
- 38:48Speaker 4: where he joked about bombing. Dave Chappelle joked about bombing
- 38:50Speaker 4: and he said something where the audience was bowing him
- 38:53Speaker 4: and getting mad and they were yelling refund and he's like,
- 38:55Speaker 4: I'm keeping your money. It's a very funny bit. But
- 38:58Speaker 4: to see that makes you think that, man, anybody can
- 39:01Speaker 4: try it. Because if Dave Chappelle could still go out
- 39:03Speaker 4: there and not win a crowd over, even if that's
- 39:06Speaker 4: one of one hundred, and even if I think he
- 39:07Speaker 4: made several jokes about not being sober when he was
- 39:10Speaker 4: trying to make jokes, it makes you think differently. And
- 39:14Speaker 4: so I was going to ask you for an open
- 39:16Speaker 4: mic night with people who might bomb. Does someone show
- 39:19Speaker 4: you that they might be a more successful comedian by
- 39:21Speaker 4: not letting that ruin their attempt?
- 39:24Speaker 1: Of course? Yeah, because stage presidence is always going to
- 39:26Speaker 1: be key, right, like not all crowds are going to
- 39:29Speaker 1: be your crowds. You know, once once you get successful,
- 39:32Speaker 1: like a Chappelle, more people are coming to see you specifically,
- 39:35Speaker 1: it's a lot easier. But when when you're you know,
- 39:38Speaker 1: I do better outside the loop. For example, right inside
- 39:43Speaker 1: the loop it gets more more woke, more liberal. Sure
- 39:47Speaker 1: you get out to a stage in conro, it's it's
- 39:49Speaker 1: a lot easier for the conservative mind to How.
- 39:53Speaker 4: Much do you shape your comedy based on what you
- 39:55Speaker 4: think the audience. Like if you walk into a room
- 39:57Speaker 4: and you see a bunch of cowboy hats or something,
- 39:59Speaker 4: is there something you adjust?
- 40:00Speaker 1: No, I'm mean no, I'm mean like, I don't I'm
- 40:03Speaker 1: not going to let anybody tell me who to be
- 40:05Speaker 1: not at this point, you know what I mean. It's like, no,
- 40:08Speaker 1: you're either gonna like me or you're not sure.
- 40:10Speaker 4: So let's give out any social media anything that people
- 40:13Speaker 4: can follow you on.
- 40:13Speaker 1: It's super simple. I'm at comedy Blake everywhere, and then
- 40:17Speaker 1: if you would follow my podcast, I do a weekly
- 40:19Speaker 1: podcast with other two other local comedians, Ben Daniel and
- 40:22Speaker 1: Will Loadan, two of my best friends at Unseasoned Pod.
- 40:25Speaker 5: At Unseasoned Pod, that's cool. What's that about?
- 40:27Speaker 1: It's just us covering everything. Yeah, it's you know, we
- 40:32Speaker 1: talk a lot of baseball. We're all huge baseball, so
- 40:35Speaker 1: all these perfect games getting pulled and sure, but mainly
- 40:39Speaker 1: just comedy. Whatever's whatever's you know in the zeitgeist.
- 40:43Speaker 5: So you said Indiana is it Cubs? Oh yeah, that's terrible.
- 40:47Speaker 1: Wait.
- 40:50Speaker 4: While I was born in Jersey and then I lived
- 40:51Speaker 4: in South Bend for a while. Okay, in my life
- 40:53Speaker 4: South Bend Indiana. Actually, even my first job in radio ESPN,
- 40:57Speaker 4: I was covering like notre name and stuff, and they
- 40:59Speaker 4: even asked me like, hey, do you want to go
- 41:01Speaker 4: out and do some Cubs.
- 41:02Speaker 5: I'm like, I do not want.
- 41:03Speaker 1: To do that at all.
- 41:03Speaker 4: And I even worked at w GEN Radio in Chicago
- 41:05Speaker 4: for a while. Oh we had the Cubs and it
- 41:08Speaker 4: was so were you emotional when they finally won the
- 41:12Speaker 4: World Series?
- 41:12Speaker 1: I cried so hard. I was managing the dispensary in
- 41:17Speaker 1: San Francisco, just watching as I'm in the in the
- 41:20Speaker 1: club working and just all the TV. I cried like
- 41:23Speaker 1: a baby.
- 41:24Speaker 4: What I kind of love about that is you probably
- 41:26Speaker 4: were alone. There probably were not a lot of other
- 41:28Speaker 4: people hitting getting emotionally hit.
- 41:30Speaker 1: It was San Francisco. They were winning every every even year.
- 41:33Speaker 1: It was it was San Francisco is not it's.
- 41:37Speaker 4: They're just watching this one dude weep And I'm like, okay,
- 41:40Speaker 4: what's funny about that. I have completely different experience. I
- 41:43Speaker 4: was producing a show at w GEN Radio. They had
- 41:45Speaker 4: just given up the rights to the Cubs the year before,
- 41:47Speaker 4: so we didn't have them, which to me was hilarious.
- 41:50Speaker 4: And my boss comes to me and goes Hey, we're
- 41:52Speaker 4: going to do a postgame show like we had the
- 41:54Speaker 4: game because they had been so long tied together. I
- 41:57Speaker 4: was like, that seems illegal and bad, and he's like,
- 42:00Speaker 4: we're just gonna do it. And so I sat in
- 42:01Speaker 4: a room the night they won with three fifty somethings
- 42:05Speaker 4: just all weeping and I had to talk into the
- 42:07Speaker 4: microphone because none of them could speak, and I'm like, dude,
- 42:09Speaker 4: it can't hit you this hard. But I grew up
- 42:11Speaker 4: Yankee fans.
- 42:13Speaker 1: And I mean I was a kid watching Harry carry
- 42:15Speaker 1: on w Jewey g In all summer long, the Sammy
- 42:19Speaker 1: Sosa Maguire home run as a kid in Indiana. Oh,
- 42:22Speaker 1: bro there was nothing better. It broke me. And I
- 42:25Speaker 1: grew up in a family of all Cardinals fans, so
- 42:28Speaker 1: having that I was the one standout except for you know,
- 42:31Speaker 1: married in family.
- 42:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I see, I see that. You went to the
- 42:34Speaker 4: Marines and no one else in your family was a Marine.
- 42:36Speaker 4: You choose the Cubs when everybody else is a Cardinal fan.
- 42:38Speaker 1: To go against.
- 42:38Speaker 4: Yeah, there's something else, all right. So we only have
- 42:40Speaker 4: about four or five minutes left. One more time promote
- 42:43Speaker 4: where you'll be.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Tonight tonight at Secret group Midnight Dirty Show, Dirty Show? Cool? Everybody?
- 42:49Speaker 5: How much your tickets?
- 42:50Speaker 1: I think they're ten dollars ten dollars of door, five
- 42:52Speaker 1: dollars online, I believe.
- 42:53Speaker 5: Okay, do you want to give away a set of
- 42:55Speaker 5: tickets or no?
- 42:55Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 42:56Speaker 5: Of course, two.
- 42:56Speaker 4: Tickets to the third caller that calls into the radio
- 42:59Speaker 4: station right now. We don't need to throw you on
- 43:00Speaker 4: the air, but Lucas can answer the phone calls. If
- 43:02Speaker 4: you want two eight one five five eight, five seven
- 43:05Speaker 4: three eight two eight one five five eight, five seven
- 43:08Speaker 4: three eight, just give Lucas your name and number is
- 43:11Speaker 4: that's all you need, okay, cool?
- 43:12Speaker 5: And then the third person who calls in.
- 43:14Speaker 4: Will get two tickets left at the door at the
- 43:16Speaker 4: secret room for the Dirty Show.
- 43:17Speaker 1: Yeah, just send me the name and we'll be good. Cool.
- 43:19Speaker 4: That's hilarious to me that we just gave out tickets
- 43:22Speaker 4: to the Dirty Show and KCV radio.
- 43:24Speaker 5: That'd be great.
- 43:25Speaker 1: Yeah. And if you want to uh, as soon as
- 43:28Speaker 1: I'll send you a message, we'll do some tickets for
- 43:30Speaker 1: the next ros battle as well, as soon as I
- 43:32Speaker 1: get it scheduled and whatnot, and you can just run.
- 43:34Speaker 4: I'll give them out some other time then on the air,
- 43:36Speaker 4: but this is for the Dirty Show. And so the
- 43:38Speaker 4: last thing I want to ask you, and I know
- 43:40Speaker 4: we kind of touching it before, and then I'll leave
- 43:42Speaker 4: it open in about a minute or two at the
- 43:45Speaker 4: end for you to say anything else you want about
- 43:47Speaker 4: military or military experience. You said that you're now solely
- 43:50Speaker 4: a comedian. When did you take that jump and what like?
- 43:54Speaker 4: Is it a point where you said, I'm doing enough,
- 43:56Speaker 4: I know that this is good or was it a
- 43:58Speaker 4: I need to dedicate myself this whole heartedly, Because I
- 44:01Speaker 4: think that's really interesting when people choose, like for me
- 44:04Speaker 4: doing radio, you choose to dedicate yourself to what a
- 44:07Speaker 4: lot of people tell you is a very difficult profession,
- 44:10Speaker 4: Like a lot of your family will probably be like, well,
- 44:12Speaker 4: don't do that, and then you choose to do it
- 44:14Speaker 4: full time.
- 44:14Speaker 5: Yeah, just talk a little bit about that.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Yeah. So it happened my contract expired. It wasn't as
- 44:20Speaker 1: much of a choice. It was I've got to get
- 44:23Speaker 1: another job. This contracts expiring. The next week. I got
- 44:26Speaker 1: on kill Tony. Wow. So I go on there, and
- 44:29Speaker 1: you know, everybody thinks that's you're gonna blow up overnight.
- 44:31Speaker 1: It's not. It's not that. Obviously I'd work for for
- 44:34Speaker 1: years as a comedian trying this. You know, I was
- 44:37Speaker 1: seven years deep total at that point whatever it was,
- 44:41Speaker 1: and I just I bet on myself. I was like,
- 44:43Speaker 1: you know what, I'll figure it out along the way.
- 44:45Speaker 1: I've got enough. I'll live off savings for the next year.
- 44:49Speaker 1: I'm coming up on a year in August. So yeah,
- 44:53Speaker 1: it was like, I just I'm going to go full in.
- 44:55Speaker 1: I know this is what I want out of life. Yeah,
- 44:57Speaker 1: whatever it takes to make it work, I'm gonna make
- 44:59Speaker 1: it work and we'll go from there. It was so
- 45:02Speaker 1: not by choice, but I think I needed pushed into that.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Into that anyway, kill Tony.
- 45:07Speaker 5: That's like a thing. I know a couple of comedians,
- 45:09Speaker 5: you've done it. That's the thing. You like, sign up there,
- 45:11Speaker 5: You wait a long time and you Mike, get on.
- 45:13Speaker 5: How that went?
- 45:13Speaker 1: I think I went seven weeks in a row and
- 45:16Speaker 1: finally got pulled seventh or eight eighth week.
- 45:19Speaker 5: What's that? What's the rush of that?
- 45:21Speaker 1: Like? I forgot every joke I'd ever written. I'm backstage.
- 45:26Speaker 1: You know, you get pulled your you're at the bar
- 45:28Speaker 1: next door. They they call your name, they walk you
- 45:31Speaker 1: over and they set you up right behind stage, gave
- 45:35Speaker 1: me a water bottle and I remember I'm shaking it
- 45:39Speaker 1: just I spilled the water all over my shirt. Lucky
- 45:41Speaker 1: I was are in black. You could not see it.
- 45:43Speaker 1: And I instantly go on stage and forget everything I've
- 45:47Speaker 1: ever written, and it was I just did my opener
- 45:50Speaker 1: because it was.
- 45:51Speaker 5: Like, I can't think you have so little time.
- 45:54Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's what you know, running it and being
- 45:57Speaker 1: out every night does is I got to go off
- 45:59Speaker 1: that that second nature and.
- 46:01Speaker 5: That's awesomes go.
- 46:02Speaker 4: We are almost at a time like twenty seconds. Is
- 46:04Speaker 4: there anything you can say about veterans or two veterans
