Latest / Health with Hashimoto’s - Thyroid or Immune Education for Autoimmune Thyroid Disease / 138 // A $10 solution to Hashimoto’s?
Transcript
- 0:00A while back, I came across a comment on a forum in Reddit, and this person
- 0:05said, I'm not a functional medicine provider. I'm just someone who suffered
- 0:08for years and wasted countless dollars only to find a $10 solution.
- 0:13And they went on to describe that $10 solution.
- 0:15I took a screenshot of it when I came across it, and then I put it in my episode
- 0:20ideas folder and kind of forgot about it until now.
- 0:24So let's talk about it. What is this $10 solution and will it work for you.
- 0:28Welcome back to another episode of Health with Hashimoto's. This is the podcast
- 0:33where you find simple and sustainable solutions for your health.
- 0:36I am here to empower you to take charge of your health.
- 0:41If you have Hashimoto's, if you have hypothyroid, there's a reason that you have it.
- 0:47There's something causing it. And that's one of the biggest things we do in
- 0:51this podcast is we work together to figure out why you are having problems and
- 0:56then what you can do about it.
- 0:57Obviously, since it's a podcast, I cannot hear you.
- 1:01Like I'm just talking to you, but I can't hear you. And so that is where our
- 1:05school community comes into play, skool.com.
- 1:08There are so many different communities on the school platform and the Health
- 1:12with Hashimoto's is one of those communities. So come on over and join us.
- 1:16When you join us, you should get an email from me that invites you to a free
- 1:2215 minute call so that we can connect.
- 1:24And that way I can hear you and you can tell me what's going on.
- 1:28We can have a quick chat. It is not a full holistic Hashimoto's health session.
- 1:33It is not a coaching call. This is a, hey, let's get to know each other.
- 1:38And you can tell me what's going on, what you're struggling with,
- 1:40and I can point you in the right direction.
- 1:42I would love to invite you to that. So come on over to school if you haven't
- 1:46already, and then sign up for that call. The link will be in your email.
- 1:51Okay, so this comment has to
- 1:52do with your microbiome. So let's go back and talk about your microbiome.
- 1:56Your gut can also be called your microbiome.
- 1:59And if you've been listening to this podcast for a while, you know that I have
- 2:03mentioned every autoimmune condition has three things, has a gut component,
- 2:08a genetic component and one or more triggers.
- 2:11So of course, today we're talking about that gut component of the autoimmune condition.
- 2:16Specifically in this podcast, we're talking about Hashimoto's.
- 2:18So we need to address the health of your gut.
- 2:22Your gut can also be called your microbiome. It's basically just the tube.
- 2:25It starts in your mouth and your nose, and it ends at your rectum.
- 2:29The thing is, 80% and people differ, 70 to 80% of your immune system is in and
- 2:35around your microbiome or your gut.
- 2:37Many, many, many chronic diseases and autoimmune diseases begin in the gut or
- 2:44at least have a gut component, even genetic diseases. They are impacted by your gut health.
- 2:51Your microbiome impacts everything.
- 2:54It impacts your daily levels of pain, your energy, so much stuff.
- 2:58It's even called your second brain because it produces so many hormones.
- 3:03And did you know that your gut sends 400 times more messages to your brain than
- 3:10your brain sends to the rest of your body.
- 3:12I'm going to repeat that because it blows my mind every time I think about that.
- 3:16Because you think of your brain being the control center for your entire body.
- 3:20You think of your brain sending messages everywhere, right? At least I do.
- 3:25Your gut sends 400 times more messages to your brain than your brain sends to
- 3:31the rest of your body. So we really need to take care of our gut.
- 3:35And in a perfect world, all of the beneficial microbes in our body would be perfect.
- 3:40They would be perfectly imbalanced, we would know how to feed them,
- 3:43we would know how to keep them healthy, and we would be reaping the amazing
- 3:47health benefits that they help us achieve.
- 3:49However, that's not the world that we live in. So when all of those things are
- 3:53out of whack, then we can get symptoms like gas, bloating, constipation,
- 3:58diarrhea, inflammation.
- 4:00Like poor gut health plays that role in every health condition.
- 4:04It's crazy. Every health condition is impacted by your gut health.
- 4:09And then in turn, your gut health is impacted by many other things,
- 4:14like your stress levels and your sleeping habits, your digestive habits,
- 4:18like chewing your food well.
- 4:20All of those things, exercise, all of those can impact your gut health.
- 4:24Everything really is related to everything.
- 4:27So what can you do about your gut health? And actually, I'm going to narrow
- 4:32that down because gut health is something that we can talk about for hours and
- 4:36hours, and this podcast is not hours and hours long.
- 4:38So let's refine it down to just talking about the microbiome,
- 4:44specifically the pre and the probiotics.
- 4:47Now, I'm going to tell you about a garden analogy that keeps my brain straight
- 4:52on what's a prebiotic and what's a probiotic and what's a postbiotic.
- 4:55Now, if you look at your garden, you've got the soil, and then you've got the
- 4:59seeds, and you've got the fertilizer.
- 5:01When you're thinking about a garden and keeping it healthy and having amazing
- 5:06abundant harvests, you want good soil, good seeds, and good quality fertilizer.
- 5:12Whether that's put on the soil before, you know, you plant your seeds,
- 5:15or whether it's something that you spray on, like you want all of those three
- 5:19things to be peak so that you have the best outcome.
- 5:24It's the same thing with your microbiome. You want good garden soil. That's the prebiotics.
- 5:29You want good seeds. That's the probiotics. And you want good fertilizer.
- 5:35That's the postbiotics. And fertilizer you don't need a lot of.
- 5:39And so I'm not even going to talk about postbiotics because if you are eating
- 5:42well enough and getting prebiotics and probiotics in your diet,
- 5:47you are also usually getting postbiotics. So I don't worry about them.
- 5:51I focus on the pre and the probiotics.
- 5:54So let's talk about the probiotics first, because sometimes you don't need soil.
- 5:58For Christmas this year, my husband got me a hydroponic garden.
- 6:02Meaning it's just water, and the seeds grow in the water, and you know,
- 6:08they grow a small amount.
- 6:09I have several different kinds of lettuce in there right now.
- 6:12I can't remember, but you can grow several different things,
- 6:15just short plants, not, you know, huge things.
- 6:18They grow in water. So technically, you can have harvest with just the seeds.
- 6:23You don't need the soil. So let's talk about probiotics first.
- 6:26According to a Harvard study, there are over 500 different species of bacteria
- 6:32that live inside the human intestine.
- 6:35That's a lot. It's a lot of different species. And we can talk about the scientific
- 6:41stuff, and I will mention it briefly, but we're not going to go into all 500.
- 6:45And also, I want to tell you that if you've been on antibiotics or if you've
- 6:49been on some diets, they can wipe out your microbiome.
- 6:54They can wipe out your beneficial probiotics.
- 6:58For example, if you've been on the carnivore diet, which is great for reducing
- 7:01inflammation, it's got no sugar in it, you know, it works really well for reducing inflammation.
- 7:07But a side effect is that it can wipe out your microbiome because there's nothing
- 7:12for your probiotics to live on.
- 7:15There's nothing for them to eat. There's no prebiotics. And you can't have probiotics
- 7:19thriving without having prebiotics for them to eat.
- 7:23But I digress. We're going to go over some of the common probiotics.
- 7:27And I'm going to link to an article that I found really helpful.
- 7:30It's from thehealthreporter.com.
- 7:33And they go over, first of all, how to read probiotic names,
- 7:37because all of the probiotics, when you look on a supplement.
- 7:41The probiotic supplements, you're going to notice really quickly that every
- 7:45probiotic listed has three different parts.
- 7:47A lot of times they're going to start with a B or an L, and then there's going to be a long name.
- 7:52So the different parts will tell you the genus, the species, and the strain.
- 7:56And yes, this is going back to elementary and high school biology.
- 8:01At least I make my kids study this in elementary school. I don't know if they still do that.
- 8:06But we're studying the genus, or we're talking about the genus,
- 8:09the species, and the strain.
- 8:12So the genus is usually a lactobacillus or a bifidobacteria.
- 8:18So if you see in your probiotic supplements, like of course it's not going to
- 8:22say this on foods, but if you take a probiotic supplement.
- 8:25A lot of them start with an L or a B.
- 8:27So that's the genus. Some will have an S because we also have Saccharomyces.
- 8:34That's a different genus of the probiotics.
- 8:38And so after the initial letter, then you're going to have another name and
- 8:42that's going to be the species.
- 8:43So a really common probiotic is L.
- 8:46Acidophilus. The acidophilus is the species.
- 8:50Another one might be L-K-C-I. I don't really know how to say that one.
- 8:54I just always read it. Do you do that too?
- 8:56Like when I'm reading, sometimes I just see the word and that goes into my brain,
- 9:01but I don't figure out how to pronounce it.
- 9:04So a couple of these are the same. This next one, L-R-E-U-T-E-R-I,
- 9:10how would you say that? Reuteri?
- 9:12I don't know. So that's another lactobacillus is the genus and then the species is this reuteri.
- 9:18So you're going to have the genus and then you're going to have the species.
- 9:21And then after that, sometimes you will have like some letters or numbers.
- 9:25And those are the strains.
- 9:28So for example, you have the lacto or the L acidophilus, and then you might
- 9:34have a strain and it's LA-1 or DDS-1.
- 9:39Those are the strains. And that's why when you're reading about probiotics,
- 9:43it can get a little confusing because there's so much variety.
- 9:47But the thing is, Remember I said you have 500 different types in your gut,
- 9:51or at least hopefully you have around 500 different types. We want a lot of strains.
- 9:57And I don't know if you have listened to the episodes about GLP-1.
- 10:02I had one episode where we talked specifically about things that you can do
- 10:06to increase your own GLP-1 production.
- 10:10Because yes, things like Ozempic, Wagovi, Monjaro, all of those semiglutide and derivatives.
- 10:17The GLP-1 agonists, the Mimics, they're popular and they work to help balance
- 10:23hormones and help you lose weight, but they have so many side effects.
- 10:26And in my opinion, the pros do not outweigh the risks.
- 10:30The risks are far greater. There are things you can do. I have that episode
- 10:35on things you can do naturally.
- 10:37A couple episodes after that, I talk about the MindBody GLP-1 system,
- 10:41which is what I'm a super big fan of.
- 10:44I love how it helps your body do what your body is supposed to do.
- 10:48It balances things out. It helps your gut. I love that it's two parts.
- 10:53So the capsules, it's called the MB-Core.
- 10:56And then there's some powder and that's the MB Enhance. That MB Enhance helps
- 11:00with gut health and I absolutely love it.
- 11:03I did a live stream in one of the Facebook groups that I helped moderate and
- 11:07I talked about all the different ways that I use that MB Enhance.
- 11:10It is fantastic. Now people who have not had a lot of fiber in their diet,
- 11:14there is an adjustment period as their gut is, you know, getting used to a lot
- 11:20more fiber and prebiotics and probiotics, but I love it.
- 11:24I think it tastes good. It's kind of a vanilla flavor.
- 11:26And I just love how my gut feels with it.
- 11:30Anyway, I digress. In those two episodes, I talk about ways that you can increase your GLP-1.
- 11:37And we talk about one probiotic, and that is acromantia.
- 11:42And you don't have to take acromantia as a supplement or even in food to have more acromantia.
- 11:49In that episode, I talk about you can work on the prebiotics,
- 11:55you can work on the food that your probiotics eat.
- 11:59And in doing that, you will increase how many probiotics you have.
- 12:03So you don't have to actually take an acromantia supplement in order to have
- 12:08more acromantia probiotic in your gut. Isn't that cool?
- 12:13And it goes for a lot of other probiotics too.
- 12:16Your probiotics want to eat food. So now let's talk about prebiotics and where you can get them.
- 12:22Because the prebiotics are the food that your probiotics eat.
- 12:26And the prebiotics are so important.
- 12:30My husband and I are completely different when it comes to food.
- 12:33And we like the same types of food. But I am so routine.
- 12:38I could eat the same thing every day, like a different thing for breakfast, lunch, and supper.
- 12:43But then I could repeat that day every day for like a year and I would probably not get bored.
- 12:49I am fine with routine. My husband, he wants a new food every single day.
- 12:54He wants a lot of variety.
- 12:56He doesn't want to eat the same thing. He wants choices.
- 12:59He wants things to be different. He wants things to be colorful and beautiful.
- 13:03I appreciate that so much about him because my goodness, what a boring life
- 13:09my kids would have if I was in charge. We would have the same thing every single week.
- 13:14I'm so glad my husband is around.
- 13:17And your probiotics in your gut, they're like my husband. Your probiotics want variety.
- 13:24They want to have different things available all the time.
- 13:27Your probiotics do not want routine and the same things over and over like I am happy eating.
- 13:34Your probiotics want a variety. So your probiotics, You want to feed them like
- 13:39a lot of different fruits and grains and legumes and vegetables, herbs even, spices.
- 13:45There are so many different things that help your probiotics eat.
- 13:50Even the beneficial fats in like butter and olive oil, chia seeds,
- 13:55flax seeds, hemp seeds, avocado oil, coconut oil, even all of those things are
- 14:01going to help build a good environment for the probiotics.
- 14:05Now the probiotics aren't going to eat the fats, but those are going to help
- 14:10the gut health in general and build a healthy home for the bacteria.
- 14:14So your gut probiotics, they want things to eat like fiber.
- 14:19You know what fiber is. They also really like polyphenols.
- 14:23Now polyphenols, it's a fancy name and there's a lot of different varieties.
- 14:28Basically it's chemistry and I'm not going to talk about it,
- 14:30but I'll tell you one type of polyphenol is a flavonoid.
- 14:34Now flavonoids, you're probably familiar with some of them because they are
- 14:39the colorful plant compounds found in some foods.
- 14:42So if you've heard of superfoods, a lot of the superfoods are super because
- 14:47of the flavonoids, which are polyphenols.
- 14:50So maybe you have heard of quercetin.
- 14:53Back in 2020, there was huge respiratory virus going around the entire world,
- 14:58and I was hearing a lot about quercetin and how it can help people fight off respiratory viruses.
- 15:05Or maybe you have heard that dark chocolate is good for you.
- 15:10And why is it? It's because of the polyphenols in them. blueberries.
- 15:14Cranberries, tea, red grapes, and then of course red wine.
- 15:19All of these contain different flavonoids or polyphenols that your gut really
- 15:25wants because the probiotics need healthy food and the probiotics really love
- 15:31those specific types of prebiotics.
- 15:34So in addition to the foods that I just listed, other foods are really high in prebiotics as well.
- 15:40Broccoli, kale, cabbage, apples, tomatoes, I said berries, Jerusalem artichokes, chicory.
- 15:48Now, I mentioned chicory quite a bit when we were doing the GLP-1 episode.
- 15:52Also, bananas, avocados, almonds, onions, garlic, all of those contain good prebiotics.
- 16:00And also incorporating fiber or resistant starch foods.
- 16:05That's another prebiotic. So those would be wheat. Of course,
- 16:09if you're gluten-free, you don't want to do that one.
- 16:11Potatoes and corn and other grains, those can feed the bacteria in the colon.
- 16:17And those bacteria can produce short chain fatty acids, which are resistant starches.
- 16:24And I think we talked about resistant starches in the GLP-1 episodes.
- 16:29And those episodes, by the way, are episodes 114 to 117, I believe.
- 16:34All about GLP-1, what it is, how to increase it, and then like I said,
- 16:39talking about the system,
- 16:41the mind-body GLP-1 system that helps your body create more GLP-1,
- 16:45which is super beneficial, especially if an out-of-whack blood sugar is one of your root causes.
- 16:53And it is a very common root cause for Hashimoto's.
- 16:57Having too many highs, too many lows, even not a diabetic, having your blood
- 17:02sugar go on a roller coaster can be a root cause for Hashimoto's.
- 17:07So I'm a huge fan of the MindBody GLP-1 system for people who want to get things
- 17:13back in balance and help their body do what their body is supposed to do.
- 17:17So moving on to what foods can help you with probiotics.
- 17:22Now, of course, probiotics, we talked about that they're the living bacteria.
- 17:25You can get them from supplements.
- 17:28I take Seed, S-E-E-D, and that is my favorite because it's got the prebiotic
- 17:33and the probiotic together in one capsule.
- 17:35It's actually like a dual capsule, super cool.
- 17:38And, but I also get it from my diet. And here is where we come to that Reddit
- 17:43comment that started this entire episode.
- 17:46This person, Buzzle Muzzle is her or his handle.
- 17:51The little icon is a girl, so I'm just going to say her. She says,
- 17:54let me give you a chance to possibly save a bunch of money.
- 17:57Go get yourself some milk kefir grains and watch some YouTube videos on how
- 18:01to make milk kefir, then branch out to as many other fermented veggies and drinks as you can.
- 18:06Healing my gut microbiome with
- 18:09fermented foods completely reversed all my crippling digestive issues.
- 18:14Note, I am not a functional medicine provider. I'm just someone who suffered
- 18:17for years and wasted countless dollars only to find a $10 solution. So here's the thing.
- 18:24Making your own fermented foods is like pennies.
- 18:28Most fermented foods, it's a little salt and a little thyme. That's it.
- 18:34Not thyme the spice, but thyme as in, you know, a week or two.
- 18:37To make kombucha, you start out with old kombucha and a scoby.
- 18:42And you add some fresh tea and some fresh sugar and then it's time.
- 18:47Kefir, you can make milk kefir or water kefir and both of them,
- 18:50you start out with some grains which are not grains at all.
- 18:54It's just tiny little scobies that have the name grains.
- 18:57And you add some milk or some water and a little sugar and thyme to make lacto-fermented
- 19:05carrots or onions. You add the carrots or the onions or the garlic or whatever to the jar.
- 19:11You add some salt water as a brine and some thyme. That's it.
- 19:16They're so cheap. And each one of these things makes different strains of probiotics.
- 19:22And so how many can you incorporate in a day or in a week?
- 19:25I mean, there's so many different kinds. You can make pickles,
- 19:27not the regular pickles. These have to be lacto-fermented. You make sauerkraut.
- 19:31There's so many different varieties.
- 19:32I encourage you to come over to our school community. I'm going to have a thread
- 19:36all about fermented veggies and fermented foods so you can figure out how to
- 19:42make things that are probiotic-rich and also have prebiotics and impact your
- 19:47gut. I'll see you over there.
- 19:48This podcast is for informational and educational purposes only.
- 19:51Please discuss any concerns and plans with your trusted healthcare professional.
- 19:55If you found this episode helpful, will you please share it with a friend?
- 19:59I'll see you next week on the Health with Hashimoto's podcast.
- 20:02Music.
