- 0:12Hello friends, it is Sean here. It is great to have your company
- 0:17on this Monday morning, midday or evening or afternoon or
- 0:22wherever it is this finds you. G Day, good to see you.
- 0:25Well, good to have your company anyway.
- 0:27I can't see you, but I'm imagining you look dapper as
- 0:30ever. And here we are, ready for
- 0:32another week in God's word. Now for almost half of you, last
- 0:36week ended a little bit strangely.
- 0:39Somehow, for those of you who listened on Spotify, Thursday's
- 0:43reading got gobbled up in the ether.
- 0:45It exists on all the other platforms.
- 0:47Just somehow Spotify glitched it out of existence and as luck
- 0:52would have it, it is the first half of a two chapter section.
- 0:58This is where Isaiah is speaking to his people who are exiled far
- 1:03away from the homeland in Babylon and they are wondering
- 1:07what does this mean about God's sovereignty.
- 1:09Because back then in the in the ancient Near East, your success
- 1:13as a people group really showed how powerful or impotent your
- 1:18God was, and they have just been taken away from their homeland
- 1:22and sent into exile. And surely does this mean it
- 1:26can't canneth that their God who they have faithfully well not so
- 1:30faithfully worshipped and followed all these generations,
- 1:34is actually not a very powerful God at all.
- 1:37And so this is God through Isaiah responding to their
- 1:41concerns and questions about is their God powerful?
- 1:44Do the Babylonians worship a more powerful God?
- 1:48And so in chapter 44, God pulls apart all of their gods, saying
- 1:53that they are not actually real gods, they're just lumps of wood
- 1:56and pieces of metal. And then that continues in
- 1:59chapter 45 as he speaks about the fact that he is still in
- 2:04charge and that he will restore Jerusalem in the future and
- 2:07offer salvation to everyone. So if you want to catch up on
- 2:10chapter 44, feel free to do that on Apple Podcasts or Pod Bean.
- 2:15I'm sure you'll find it somewhere if you're keen.
- 2:16Otherwise, let's read together this week, opening chapter,
- 2:27Isaiah 45. This is what the Lord says to
- 2:35Cyrus, his anointed one whose right hand he will empower
- 2:40before him. Mighty kings will be paralyzed
- 2:44with fear. Their fortress gates will be
- 2:46opened, never to shut again. This is what the Lord says.
- 2:51I will go before you, Cyrus, and level the mountains.
- 2:56I will smash down gates of bronze and cut through bars of
- 3:00iron. And I will give you treasures
- 3:02hidden in the darkness, secret riches.
- 3:05I will do this so you may know that I am the Lord, the God of
- 3:10Israel, the one who calls you by name.
- 3:14And why have I called you for this work?
- 3:16Why did I call you by name when you did not know me?
- 3:20It is for the sake of Jacob, my servant Israel, my chosen. 1.
- 3:26I am the Lord. There is no other God.
- 3:30I have equipped you for battle, though you don't even know me.
- 3:33So all the world from east to West will know that there is no
- 3:37other God. I am the Lord and there is no
- 3:41other. I create the light and make the
- 3:45darkness. I send good times and bad times.
- 3:49I, the Lord, am the one who does these things.
- 3:52Open up, O heavens, and pour out your righteousness.
- 3:57Let the earth open wide so salvation and righteousness can
- 4:01sprout up together. I, the Lord, created them.
- 4:06What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator?
- 4:10Does a clay pot argue with its maker?
- 4:13Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it saying, stop,
- 4:17you're doing it wrong? Does the pot exclaim how clumsy
- 4:22you can be? How terrible it would be if a
- 4:25newborn baby said to its father, why was I born?
- 4:29Or if it said to its mother, Why did you make me this way?
- 4:33This is what the Lord says, the Holy One of Israel and your
- 4:37creator. Do you question what I do for my
- 4:41children? Do you give me orders about the
- 4:44work of my hands? I am the one who made the earth
- 4:49and created people to live on it.
- 4:51With my hands I stretched out the heavens.
- 4:55All the stars are at my command. I will raise up Cyrus to fulfil
- 5:00my righteous purpose, and I will guide his actions.
- 5:04He will restore my city and free my captive people without
- 5:09seeking a reward. I, the Lord of Heaven's armies,
- 5:14have spoken. This is what the Lord says.
- 5:19You will rule the Egyptians, The Ethiopians and the Serbians.
- 5:24They will come to you with all their merchandise and it will
- 5:27all be yours. They will follow you as
- 5:31prisoners in chains that will fall to their knees in front of
- 5:35you and say God is with you and he is the only God.
- 5:40There is no other truly, Oh God of Israel our Saviour.
- 5:47You work in mysterious ways. All Craftsman who make idols
- 5:52will be humiliated. They will all be disgraced
- 5:55together. But the Lord will save the
- 5:58people of Israel with eternal salvation throughout everlasting
- 6:03ages. They will never again be
- 6:05humiliated and disgraced. For the Lord is God, and He
- 6:10created the heavens and earth and put everything in place.
- 6:15He made the world to be lived in, not to be a place of empty
- 6:20chaos. I am the Lord, he says, and
- 6:25there is no other. I publicly proclaim bold
- 6:29promises. I do not whisper obscurities in
- 6:32some dark corner. I would not have told the people
- 6:35of Israel to seek me if I could not be found.
- 6:39I, the Lord, speak only what is true and declare only what is
- 6:44right. Gather together and come you
- 6:48fugitives from surrounding nations, what fools they are who
- 6:52carry around their wooden idols and pray to gods that cannot
- 6:56save. Consult together, argue your
- 6:59case, Get together and decide what to say.
- 7:03Who made these things so long ago?
- 7:06What idol ever told you what would happen?
- 7:09Was it not I the Lord? For there is no other God but
- 7:14me, a righteous God and Saviour. There is none but me.
- 7:20Let all the world look to me for salvation, for I am God.
- 7:25There is no other. I have sworn by my own name, I
- 7:30have spoken the truth, and I will never go back on my word.
- 7:34Every knee will bend to me, and every tongue will declare
- 7:40allegiance to me. The people will declare.
- 7:45The Lord is the source of all my righteousness and strength, and
- 7:49all who were angry with him will come to him and be ashamed.
- 7:55In the Lord all the generations of Israel will be justified, and
- 7:59in Him they will boast. Oh Lord, thank you for the
- 8:12clarity that you give us through our eyes, words, clarity.
- 8:17That means that you don't sit beside anyone else, but you
- 8:22stand proud of everything, because you are God.
- 8:28You are God of everything. You laid out the heavens, You
- 8:31created the earth and created people to live in it.
- 8:37You are unrivalled, and we place you atop the highest throne in
- 8:42our life. Let it be you that our heart
- 8:46desires to please. Let it be your truth that is the
- 8:51true north of our compass. Let it be your love that we seek
- 8:58more earnestly than anything else.
- 9:00And thank you that you offer your love and your saving grace
- 9:05to us with your arms open wide. Thank you for the gift of Jesus,
- 9:12in whom all of this is possible. We love you when we praise you,
- 9:16and it's in His name that we pray.
- 9:19Amen.
