- 0:04with God. How would that change your faith journey?
- 0:09Hey everyone, welcome back to the Couples Journey blog series podcast.
- 0:13We're on part two of the series, Praying Like Never Before.
- 0:17Today, we're exploring hindrances to prayer as we reflect on key insights from Ray and Annie.
- 0:23They draw from Bill Kine's enlightening article, Growing in Prayer,
- 0:27Part 1, hindrances in prayer, highlighting the barriers many face in their communication
- 0:32with God and how we can push through those challenges together. Here's part two.
- 0:39One of the key biblical principles we've learned in the study course,
- 0:42true life journey, discipleship, and mission is the importance of growing in prayer and faith.
- 0:49As part of the resources curated by the C.S. Lewis Institute,
- 0:53we revisited an insightful article by Bill Kynes titled, Growing in Prayer,
- 0:58Part 1, Hindrances in Prayer.
- 1:00Reflecting on these resources was a meaningful reminder to pause,
- 1:04meditate, and reassess our communication with God.
- 1:08Taking the time to step back and re-evaluate helps us gain a broader perspective,
- 1:13discovering truths that truly impact our hearts and minds.
- 1:17The hindrances Bill outlined were eye-opening for us. They encouraged us to
- 1:21become more intentional and disciplined in our prayer lives.
- 1:25He identified four main obstacles that hinder our prayer. One,
- 1:29the world that shapes us.
- 1:312. The flesh we indulge. 3. The devil who deceives. 4.
- 1:36The challenge of faith. First, the world that shapes us.
- 1:40Living in today's noisy, chaotic culture makes it difficult to find moments of quietness.
- 1:46Often, the only time we experience peace and disconnection is during sleep.
- 1:51And even then, many of us reach for our phones first thing in the morning.
- 1:55We're guilty of this, too.
- 1:56It wasn't until we experienced the consequences of losing sight of God's word
- 2:01and quiet time that we realized we needed to make bold changes,
- 2:05particularly in how we manage technology and choose our focus in the mornings.
- 2:10Bill's words resonated deeply. To pray faithfully, you must be willing to swim
- 2:16against the cultural stream.
- 2:17Choosing to prioritize silence and prayer in a culture that thrives on noise
- 2:22is an act of intentionality and obedience.
- 2:25Second, the flesh we indulge, regardless of our upbringing or spiritual maturity.
- 2:31Maintaining consistency in prayer requires discipline.
- 2:34The flesh, with its natural tendencies, fights against humility and dependence on God.
- 2:40Because all we like sheep have gone astray, as noted in Isaiah 53 verse 6.
- 2:46We can fall into the trap of disregarding God's authority.
- 2:50This leads us to neglect prayer or see it as optional rather than essential.
- 2:55Bill explains, the flesh is our self-centered, self-exalting pride that deludes
- 3:00us into thinking we are self-created and self-sufficient.
- 3:03And the word reminds us, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak,
- 3:09as noted in Matthew 26 verse 41.
- 3:12Overcoming these weaknesses requires humility, acknowledging our limitations,
- 3:17and humbly submitting ourselves under God's authority.
- 3:20Prayer becomes our ongoing conversation of dependence, asking for His help,
- 3:25guidance, and strength.
- 3:27Third, the deceiver, the devil who deceives. We've seen how the enemy seeks
- 3:32to disrupt our prayer life.
- 3:34Even during prayer, sudden thoughts or distractions can invade our minds,
- 3:38pulling us away from communion with God.
- 3:41For me, Annie, I learned to pause, rebuke, and ask for the Holy Spirit to set
- 3:47my heart back on him. While on my, Ray.
- 3:50And there are times when temptation affects my focus.
- 3:53But by God's grace, I recognize the conviction of the Holy Spirit and respond accordingly.
- 3:59We've come to understand that the enemy's strategy isn't always obvious.
- 4:03But God's grace sustains us.
- 4:06Samuel Chadwick wisely said, The one concern of the devil is to keep the saints away from praying.
- 4:12Our response, guided by conviction and grace, helps us stay rooted in God's
- 4:17presence rather than falling into Satan's trap.
- 4:20Fourth, the challenge in faith.
- 4:22Sometimes, the greatest barrier to prayer is a lack of genuine faith.
- 4:26We can become materialistic, seeking tangible evidence instead of trusting in what we can't see.
- 4:32This attitude shifts our focus from God's work to our limited understanding,
- 4:38trying to overthink and analyze instead of cultivating a relationship rooted in trust.
- 4:43As we shared yesterday, prayer is the foundation of our relationship with God.
- 4:48It reveals how deeply our marriage is anchored in Him.
- 4:52Without a desire to be corrected by the Holy Spirit or to seek ongoing communion
- 4:56despite many temptations, we miss out on spiritual growth.
- 5:01Prayer isn't just about requests. It's about transformation.
- 5:04It's the heartbeat of a thriving relationship with Christ.
- 5:08It's never too late to grow in prayer. It begins with decisions,
- 5:12choosing to embark on a journey of restoration, renewal, and intentional communion with God.
- 5:18We pray that the truths we've shared encourage many couples to see the vital
- 5:22connection between prayer and living a victorious, Christ-centered life and marriage.
