- 0:00Reformed thinking. Welcome to the deep dive.
- 0:03This is the show where we take some of history's most
- 0:05significant sources and try to synthesize them into knowledge
- 0:08you can really get a handle on. And today we're doing a very
- 0:11specific, very intensive deep dive.
- 0:14We're looking at the conclusion of Christ's work of redemption
- 0:18through the vision of one of the great minds of the First Great
- 0:22Awakening, Jonathan Edwards. That's right.
- 0:24Our focus is really on the grand finale.
- 0:26We're moving past the Church age, past the application of
- 0:29grace in our own time, and looking straight at the ultimate
- 0:32success of Christ's purchase. We're drawing straight from his
- 0:35major work, a history of the work of redemption, where He
- 0:38lays out step by step, the general judgement and the
- 0:40bestowal of eternal glory. So our mission for you listening
- 0:44is to synthesize Edwards's very meticulous chronological account
- 0:47of that last great day. It's a clear progression, isn't
- 0:51it? It moves from this current age
- 0:52of grace through a kind of cosmic crisis and into the
- 0:55final, eternal state of glory. We really want to get into how
- 0:58he structures history's final moment.
- 1:00And to do that, to really grasp the scale of it, we first have
- 1:04to understand his framework for what he calls the success of
- 1:08Christ's purchase. He says it's twofold.
- 1:11There's a success that consists in grace and a success that
- 1:16consists in glory. If you miss that distinction,
- 1:18the whole thing doesn't quite line up.
- 1:20OK, so let's set that baseline then.
- 1:22Success in grace. That's what's happening now,
- 1:25wrought during the life of the Christian Church through the
- 1:28means of grace, preaching, sacraments, the work of the
- 1:30Spirit. That's the redemption we
- 1:32experienced today. Yes, exactly.
- 1:34Grace is the necessary work, but it's preliminary.
- 1:37It's the whole sanctifying process that makes the elect
- 1:39able or meet for their final inheritance.
- 1:43But glory? That's the crowning act, and
- 1:45that's accomplished chiefly at the Day of Judgement.
- 1:47Edwards is very clear that the bestowal of glory is the one
- 1:49point toward which all of history has been moving.
- 1:52And he also says this final stage is the true salvation and
- 1:54redemption in the fullest sense of those words, right?
- 1:57Absolutely. He points to Hebrews 9.28 where
- 2:00Christ appears a second time unto salvation.
- 2:03It's the moment the church is fully and finally saved.
- 2:07He also calls it redemption, citing Ephesians On the day of
- 2:09redemption and Luke, Your redemption draws nigh.
- 2:13The payment was made at the cross, but the final complete
- 2:16delivery of the purchase possession the whole glorified
- 2:18church that only happens on that day.
- 2:21That brings up a huge question about historical perspective.
- 2:24I mean, we spend so much time analyzing the high points of
- 2:27church history, the conversion of Constantine, the Reformation,
- 2:30future revivals, the fall of Antichrist.
- 2:32If Edward sees the bestowal of glory as the crowning act, what
- 2:35does he make of all that came before?
- 2:37Well, this is the key insight that kind of reshapes your whole
- 2:40value system for history. He says everything that comes
- 2:43before that day, all the glorious things, you know, the
- 2:45peace under Constantine, the fall of Antichrist, even the
- 2:48means of grace themselves. It's all just preparatory.
- 2:50It exists for one reason, to make the elect ready for glory.
- 2:53And his language here is, well, it's striking.
- 2:56He calls all of those earthly spiritual achievements but
- 2:59images and shadows of the glory to come.
- 3:01Images and shadows. That's a powerful statement,
- 3:05especially when you think that he personally witnessed the
- 3:08Great Awakening. He's saying even the greatest
- 3:11outpouring of the Spirit on Earth is just a shadow cast by
- 3:14the sun of final glory. It's a massive theological
- 3:17point. It means that the value of our
- 3:19current spiritual life, while very real, is by its very
- 3:22designed temporary. It's meant to be replaced by
- 3:25something infinite, greater. It shifts the whole center of
- 3:28gravity of redemptive history onto those final cosmic events
- 3:32of the general judgment. OK, so if the general judgment
- 3:35is the very purpose toward which Providence has been steering the
- 3:38whole universe, then the stage is set.
- 3:40Let's move into the detailed steps Edwards lays out.
- 3:43We'll start with Part 1, the glorious summons, and this
- 3:46begins with Edwards, point to one Christ's second glorious
- 3:48appearance. What's the immediate scene on
- 3:50Earth just before this happens? Edwards paints a picture of
- 3:53extreme tension. It's always darkest before the
- 3:56dawn in his view of redemption. He says Christ appears at the
- 4:00very moment the wicked are enjoying their greatest earthly
- 4:04success. He says they're reveling in
- 4:07their wickedness and specifically compassing the holy
- 4:09city, ready to destroy it. So it's that classic picture of
- 4:13suddenness. They're in the middle of their
- 4:14persecution or just, you know, celebrating themselves, eating,
- 4:17drinking, scoffing at the idea of a judge.
- 4:19And then the crown at midnight comes.
- 4:22They are caught completely off guard.
- 4:24And the visual contrast that follows is just absolute.
- 4:27It reverses the entire story of the first Advent.
- 4:29You have to remember that comparison at his first coming.
- 4:32He's born in a stable, a root out of a dry ground, disguised,
- 4:36afflicted, hanging on a cross with soldiers mocking him.
- 4:39That was Christ in his humiliation.
- 4:41But now this is the glorification.
- 4:43Yes, the ultimate reversal. Christ appears in his perfected,
- 4:47glorified human body, and he's radiating what Edwards calls the
- 4:51glory of his Father. He's not alone this time.
- 4:54He's attended by all his holy angels, principalities, powers.
- 4:57He uses that biblical language, thousand, thousands ministering
- 5:00to him. His simplest attendance are
- 5:03angels, beings of immense glory themselves.
- 5:05The scale is just astronomical and it's visible to everyone,
- 5:09Edwards says. The sheer light of this event is
- 5:11so intense that the sun in a clear sky will be but darkness
- 5:14in comparison of it. It's an undeniable universal
- 5:17event that fulfills revelation. Every eye shall see him.
- 5:20No more hiding. And this arrival has immediate,
- 5:23drastic effects on everyone, splitting them instantly into
- 5:25two psychological states for the wicked.
- 5:27Their parties, their drinking, their schemes, it all just stops
- 5:31instantly. The whole army surrounding the
- 5:33Saints just falls apart. They drop their weapons.
- 5:35Their whole tone changes from laughter and scoffing to
- 5:38something much darker. Right.
- 5:40Their laughter gives way to hideous, hellish yelling.
- 5:44Edwards describes their faces changing from pride to ghastly
- 5:48terror and amazement, and they're seized with trembling
- 5:51and chattering of teeth. They're face to face with their
- 5:54judge, who is infinitely holy, infinitely powerful, and whom
- 5:57they despised. That's the moment they realize
- 5:59it's not just a moral reckoning, but the very person whose blood
- 6:03they trampled on. Their fear isn't just a fear of
- 6:05punishment, it's the dreadful sight of God's wrath made
- 6:09visible against their unrepentant souls.
- 6:11But on the other hand, for the Saints, this same site is the
- 6:14greatest possible joy. They're delivered instantly from
- 6:17all fear, from the very persecutors who are about to
- 6:19destroy them. It's that moment from Luke 21.
- 6:22They lift up their heads. They see infinite love in His
- 6:25face even in the middle of all that majesty, and that sight
- 6:28floods them with gladness. Their expressions change from
- 6:31sorrow to exceedingly joyful and triumphant.
- 6:35The temporary success of the wicked is just dismantled in a
- 6:37second. So that sets the visual stage.
- 6:40After this appearance, Edwards moves to .2, the sound of the
- 6:44great trumpet and universal resurrection.
- 6:46If the first point is the visual signal, this is the audible one,
- 6:50right? The signal is the blast of the
- 6:52last trumpet. He calls it a mighty sound which
- 6:55shakes the earth. It's so powerful that in First
- 6:57Thessalonians it's called the Voice of the Archangel.
- 7:00This sound is the command for the dead of all ages to rise.
- 7:04The scope of that is hard to even imagine.
- 7:06Edwards asks you to think about the number of the dead.
- 7:08I mean, how many people have lived and died since Adam and
- 7:11Eve? The world will be physically
- 7:13fuller of resurrected bodies than at any point in its
- 7:16history. Every grave opens.
- 7:18The sea gives up its dead. It creates this grand assembly
- 7:21of all humanity. Everyone, whoever lived, appears
- 7:24on the earth at once. Think about it.
- 7:26Adam and Eve, Abel, the prophets, the apostles, the
- 7:29martyrs, Saints from every single age.
- 7:32And it makes a special point to include those from what he calls
- 7:35the wilderness state. That's a concept tied to his
- 7:37reading of Revelation, isn't it? It is.
- 7:39It's about that time, especially during the reign of Antichrist,
- 7:43which for Edwards was the papacy, when the true church was
- 7:46persecuted, hidden, driven into obscurity.
- 7:49Even those believers from the darkest times of persecution
- 7:52will rise to join this assembly. And the enemies rise too.
- 7:55This isn't just for the faithful.
- 7:57The resurrection of the wicked is just as necessary for the
- 7:59judgement. Wicked heathens, Jews,
- 8:02Muhammadans, Papists, hypocrites, sensualists,
- 8:04heretics, deists, persecutors, everyone.
- 8:08And then the final step in this stage is the change of the
- 8:11living, and it's a dual change to fit both groups for their
- 8:14eternal destiny. The bodies of the living wicked
- 8:17men are changed to make them fit for eternal torment.
- 8:20That's a critical point. Their bodies have to be made
- 8:22indestructible, but at the same time capable of endless
- 8:25suffering. It's a horrifying
- 8:27transformation. Precisely just as demands that
- 8:29the body which was part of the sin has to be part of the
- 8:33punishment, and that punishment has to be eternal, so their
- 8:36physical form is altered to have this terrible kind of
- 8:38immortality. But for the Saints, the change
- 8:41is gloriously the opposite. Their bodies are changed in the
- 8:44twinkling of an eye to be like Christ's own glorious body.
- 8:48They put off all weakness, all dullness, every trace of decay
- 8:51that afflicted them since the fall.
- 8:54They gain incredible strength, beauty, activity, and
- 8:57incorruptible, unfading glory. Their bodies are made incapable
- 9:02of pain or sickness forever. And this physical transformation
- 9:05is a huge benchmark in redemption, one we probably
- 9:08overlook when we just focus on the legal judgement.
- 9:11This is the completion of redemption in a physical sense.
- 9:14It absolutely is. Before this day, redemption was
- 9:17incomplete. The souls of the elect were in
- 9:19glory, yes, but their bodies were still under the curse of
- 9:22the grave. Now all the bodies of the Saints
- 9:24are saved and glorified with their souls.
- 9:27All the elect are redeemed in the whole man, soul and body, in
- 9:30perfect, eternal union. That's the physical fulfillment
- 9:33of Christ's purchase. It makes the day of judgement a
- 9:35kind of cosmic biological restoration.
- 9:38The very matter of the elect is finally perfected.
- 9:41It's a comprehensive recreation, and it's an immediate global
- 9:45separation of the two destinies even before a single sentence is
- 9:49spoken. That distinction brings us right
- 9:51into Part 2, the great separation and setting the bar
- 9:55so everyone's resurrected, everyone's present, and the
- 9:58physical division has to be made.
- 10:00Edwards calls this first stage .3 ascension of the Saints and
- 10:04arraignment of enemies. The visual here is just
- 10:07unmatched. Once the dead Saints are raised
- 10:09and the living are changed, the entire church, millions of
- 10:13Saints from all ages, they all ascend at the same time.
- 10:15They are caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.
- 10:18Christ's throne is fixed in the airy region, visible to everyone
- 10:22below but not touching the defiled earth.
- 10:25So the Saints are literally taking their leave.
- 10:27That massive, simultaneous ascent is the Church's final
- 10:30farewell to this world. Edwards describes it as their
- 10:33everlasting leave of this earth, which he calls a scene of
- 10:36trouble and sorrow, where the devil reigned and Christ was
- 10:39cruelly used. They will never set foot on it
- 10:41again, and this completes redemption in another major way.
- 10:46The Church is perfectly and forever delivered from this
- 10:49present evil world. The ascent makes that separation
- 10:52physically undeniable. Before this, Saints and wicked
- 10:56lived in the same towns, worshipped in the same building.
- 10:59Sometimes now all that ambiguity is gone.
- 11:02The whole Church is seen rising, a mighty cloud of them joining
- 11:06Christ at His right hand. And this ascent allows for the
- 11:09perfect union of the Church. They were separated by time,
- 11:12distance, death, even heaven and earth.
- 11:15Now they are gathered together into one society, all gathered
- 11:18under their head, never to be separated again.
- 11:21But that leaves the massive body of the wicked still on the
- 11:23ground. Exactly.
- 11:24They become the audience, and the defendants, all wicked men
- 11:27and devils, are gathered at Christ's left hand, stuck on the
- 11:30earth. They're held there waiting for
- 11:32arraignment. And this is where the great
- 11:33cosmic enemy Satan is finally dragged forward.
- 11:36Yes, this is the dramatic centerpiece.
- 11:39The devil who opposed redemption, who instigated the
- 11:42crucifixion, who has tormented the Saints for thousands of
- 11:45years. He is dragged up out of hell,
- 11:49and he stands trembling before the same Jesus he tried to
- 11:52destroy. The public humiliation he's
- 11:54always dreaded has finally come. And the reversal of status is
- 11:57just amazing. Edwards doesn't just say Satan
- 11:59trembles before Christ, but that the Saints themselves will judge
- 12:02him. It fulfills that promise in
- 12:04First Corinthians 6. Know ye not that we shall judge
- 12:07angels? And this isn't just symbolic.
- 12:09It's a declaration of Christ's victory through his mystical
- 12:12body. Edwards ties it right back to
- 12:14Genesis 3 or C5, where the seat of the woman would bruise the
- 12:18serpent's head. The Saints, as Christ's body,
- 12:21get to participate in that crushing defeat.
- 12:23I wonder, does he clarify what that judgement looks like?
- 12:26I mean when the Saints judge angels, are they handing down
- 12:28sentences or is it something else?
- 12:30Well, in the Reformed view, and certainly for Edwards, it's an
- 12:33authoritative, declarative role. The Saints judgement is their
- 12:37affirmation and agreement with Christ's perfect sentence.
- 12:40It shows that they who fought these spiritual enemies on earth
- 12:45now completely approve of their righteous condemnation.
- 12:48It's their complete victory. And along with the devil are all
- 12:52the human persecutors. Edwards lines them up from
- 12:54history. Oh yes, the whole array of
- 12:56enemies, proud scribes, Pharisees, Pontius Pilate, the
- 13:00mocking soldiers, heathen emperors, persecuting Pope's Gog
- 13:03and Magog. All of them standing right
- 13:05before the judgement seat. The role reversal is total.
- 13:08Christ stood as a criminal before Pilot.
- 13:11The Saints were condemned by their rulers.
- 13:13Now the same Saints sit as judges, and their enemies have
- 13:17to look up and see the glory they've arrived at, the very
- 13:19people they so cruelly despised. It's the ultimate writing of all
- 13:22wrongs, and it moves us right into the great revelation of
- 13:25truth. Which is .4 vindication and
- 13:28manifestation of truth. The judgement seat isn't about
- 13:31discovering facts, it's about making hidden truth visible to
- 13:33the whole universe. That's the essence of it.
- 13:36The Saints who were slandered and treated like the filth and
- 13:39off scouring near the earth, they are fully vindicated.
- 13:42Their reputations are cleansed before everyone.
- 13:44And they first appear clothed in the glorious robe of Christ's
- 13:48righteousness. That's their legal standing.
- 13:51But Edwards goes beyond the legal, doesn't he?
- 13:53He talks about their inherent holiness.
- 13:55Precisely their actual sanctified holiness is made
- 13:58manifest all all their good works, even the secret ones, the
- 14:02private acts of charity or patient endurance that only God
- 14:05saw, they're all brought to light.
- 14:08God will bring forth the righteousness as the light.
- 14:11You will be obvious to the whole gathered world that these were
- 14:14truly the excellent of the Earth.
- 14:15So there's no more ambiguity about the character of the
- 14:18redeemed? What about the wicked?
- 14:20What's the corresponding revelation for them?
- 14:22It's exposure and total shame. All their wickedness, their
- 14:25hidden motives, their pride, their malice, their hatred of
- 14:27true religion. It's all set forth in its proper
- 14:30colors, nothing is hidden. Edwards uses that really
- 14:33chilling image. The very hearts of the wicked
- 14:36shall be turned inside out before the bright light of that
- 14:39day. Yes, and that perfect knowledge
- 14:42is necessary so that the justice of their condemnation is
- 14:45undeniable. Things said in secret done in
- 14:48the dark, They will be proclaimed for angels and men.
- 14:51Hypocrites will have their masks torn off and the righteous who
- 14:54couldn't get a fair hearing on Earth will now have their cause
- 14:57declared before the great Judge. This total manifestation of
- 15:00truth sets up the justice of the sentences that are about to
- 15:04come. OK, we've gone through the
- 15:06appearance, the resurrection, the separation, and the
- 15:09manifestation of truth. Now we get to Part 3, Finality
- 15:13and consummation, starting with Edwards Point V Pronouncement of
- 15:16sentence. This is the definitive word.
- 15:19This is the moment Christ's authority is exercised in two
- 15:21very different ways. He first passes the blessed
- 15:24sentence on the Church at his right hand, and it's delivered
- 15:27with infinite love. The words are familiar.
- 15:29Come be blessed of my Father. Inherit the Kingdom prepared for
- 15:32you from the foundation of the world.
- 15:34Edwards focuses on the emotional impact that this voice will
- 15:38cause every heart to just flow with joy.
- 15:40It's the moment of public honor for those who are despised.
- 15:44Christ publicly justifies the millions who were condemned by
- 15:47persecutors. He puts a crown of glory on
- 15:49their heads so they shine forth as the sun, visible to all their
- 15:53enemies below. A public glorification.
- 15:56But right after this act of love comes the condemnation, the
- 15:59sentence on the wicked at his left hand.
- 16:01And that sentence is simple and devastating.
- 16:04Depart you cursed into everlasting fire, prepared for
- 16:08the devil and his angels. Edwards describes the horror of
- 16:12this moment in, well, unforgettable terms.
- 16:16The sheer weight of eternal wrath in that sentence strikes
- 16:18them with unimaginable horror. He says every syllable will be
- 16:22more terrible than a stream of lightning through their hearts,
- 16:25and the finality of it drives them to immediate despair.
- 16:28It leads to this terrifying scene on Earth.
- 16:30Horrible shrieking, queering, gnashing of teeth.
- 16:33It's important to note, too, that the righteous Saints concur
- 16:35in this sentence, even the martyrs.
- 16:37They confirm it's perfect justice.
- 16:39That confirmation is vital. The condemnation isn't just a
- 16:42decree, it's a global recognition by everyone.
- 16:46Angels, Saints and the contenders condemn themselves of
- 16:50their deserved and irreversible fate, and that seals the
- 16:54judgement. So with the sentences delivered,
- 16:57the two groups are ready for their eternal destinies.
- 17:00This brings us to the two simultaneous events in Edwards
- 17:03.6 and the 7th Ascension to the highest heavens and the fiery
- 17:06Consummation. The fate of the Church and the
- 17:09fate of the Old World are decided at the same time.
- 17:12Let's look at the second ascension first.
- 17:14Christ and all his Saints, now glorified in body and soul,
- 17:18immediately leave this lower world and ascend toward the
- 17:21highest heavens, the eternal paradise of God.
- 17:24And this ascension, Edwards says, is far more glorious than
- 17:27Christ's first one after his resurrection.
- 17:29Why is that? Because the first time it was
- 17:31Christ alone ascending is the head.
- 17:33The second time, it's Christ ascending with his entire
- 17:35mystical body, the whole elect church.
- 17:37They ascend in triumph. Their warfare is over.
- 17:40And the enemies who are left behind on the condemned Earth
- 17:43are forced to watch this. That's their final torment
- 17:45before the fire. They see this triumphant site,
- 17:48millions of people they once despised rising in glory.
- 17:51And they hear their triumphant songs as the Church leaves the
- 17:55accursed world forever. And once Christ and the Church
- 17:58are a safe distance away, and that detail is key, they are
- 18:01removed before the judgment falls.
- 18:04Then the lower world is set on fire.
- 18:06This is the fiery consummation. This is the annihilation of the
- 18:10old cosmos. Edwards pulls heavily from
- 18:13Second Peter here about how the heavens and the earth, which are
- 18:16now our kept in store, reserved unto fire.
- 18:19And this is not a metaphorical fire, it's a literal,
- 18:21overwhelming destruction. Absolutely.
- 18:23The fire will come either from heaven or from the vowels of the
- 18:26earth, or both. Just like the Flood, the entire
- 18:29lower world becomes a universal furnace of fierce raiding heat.
- 18:32The intensity is just hard to get your head around.
- 18:34He describes it in terms of cosmic destruction.
- 18:37The heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements
- 18:40shall melt with fervent heat. Even references Deuteronomy
- 18:44saying the fire will burn unto the lowest hell, consuming the
- 18:48earth to its very center. Why does he emphasize that that
- 18:51it burns unto the lowest hell? Is that just a metaphor for how
- 18:54hot it? Is it's more than that.
- 18:56It speaks to the theological completeness of the vengeance.
- 18:59The earth itself, the scene of rebellion and Satan's Kingdom,
- 19:03is now judged and totally purified by wrath.
- 19:07The phrase means God's judgement gets to the very core of
- 19:10material creation. Nothing of the old cursed order
- 19:14is left untouched. And this furnace becomes the
- 19:17final fixed place of eternal torment for the wicked and for
- 19:20the devil. Correct.
- 19:22Here, persecutors suffer torments far beyond anything
- 19:24they could inflict on the Saints they burned at the stake.
- 19:27They now face the infinite direct wrath of the Judge.
- 19:30And the bodies of the wicked have that terrible immortality
- 19:33we talked about earlier. Yes, Edwards makes that
- 19:36horrifying but necessary theological point.
- 19:39Their bodies burn and they never be consumed.
- 19:42This is the perfection of eternal punishment, he says.
- 19:44Their prior suffering in hell was like an imprisonment
- 19:47compared to the full execution that follows it.
- 19:49This ensures the punishment fits the scale of the offense against
- 19:52an infinite God. It does, and this is where the
- 19:55devil gets his full punishment in the very world that used to
- 19:58be his Kingdom. The fiery end of the earth is
- 20:00now the place of His everlasting torment, and this perfectly
- 20:04accomplishes the final design of redemption, putting Christ's
- 20:08enemies completely under His feet.
- 20:09So the stage is now completely cleared, the righteous are gone,
- 20:14the wicked are in eternal torment, and the old creation is
- 20:17gone. This sets the scene for Edwards
- 20:20.8 entry into glory and the deliverance of the Kingdom.
- 20:23This is the moment the whole purpose of Redemption's history
- 20:26is realized. While the lower world is
- 20:28burning, the entire church enters with Christ into the
- 20:32eternal paradise of God. The gates of heaven open for
- 20:35their triumphant entrance. And Christ presents them to the
- 20:37Father. He says, in effect, here am I
- 20:40and the children which thou host given me.
- 20:42And Edwards describes his presentation in detail.
- 20:45Christ tells the Father he is perfectly cleansed them in his
- 20:47blood, delivered them from the fall and all their enemies, and
- 20:50brought them home in perfect holiness, shining with the
- 20:53Father's own image. They are trophies of his
- 20:55victory. The Father accepts them,
- 20:57welcomes them to their eternal inheritance with a more glorious
- 21:01manifestation of His love than they ever experienced before.
- 21:04And this is the most perfect sense of the marriage of the
- 21:06Lamb. The Millennium on earth was like
- 21:09a marriage, but this is the real consummation, the New Jerusalem
- 21:13revelation says, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
- 21:18They enter heaven for an everlasting wedding day.
- 21:21The bridegroom and bride rejoice together in a state of
- 21:24blessedness that will never, ever end.
- 21:27And at this point the whole work of redemption is declared
- 21:29finished, the top stone of the building is laid, the church is
- 21:33in the harbor of complete and eternal glory, all Christ's
- 21:36enemies are under His feet, all the Father's promises to Christ
- 21:39are accomplished, and all the hopes of the Saints are
- 21:42fulfilled. It's a definitive end to the
- 21:44preparatory state. The glory they knew on Earth is
- 21:47now seen for what it was, a faint shatter of this her
- 21:50consummate glory in heaven. The glory of the Trinity is
- 21:53maximized as well. Christ the Redeemer is glorified
- 21:56in his completed body. God the Father is glorified in
- 21:59Him, His justice satisfied, His mercy magnified, and the Holy
- 22:03Ghost is glorified in the perfection of His work on the
- 22:07Church's hearts. And along with this glorious
- 22:09entry comes the completion of the new creation.
- 22:11Yes, the new heaven and new earth is completely finished.
- 22:14After the old one is destroyed by fire, the former things are
- 22:17passed away and everything is fixed in a glorious permanent
- 22:21state for all eternity. Which brings us to a really
- 22:24crucial and kind of nuanced theological point from Edwards
- 22:27based on 1st Corinthians 15, the deliverance of the Kingdom to
- 22:30the Father. If Christ is going to reign
- 22:32forever, what does it mean that he delivers up the Kingdom?
- 22:36This is a really important clarification and Reformed
- 22:38doctrine. When Christ began the work of
- 22:40redemption, a specific Kingdom, a mediatorial Commission, was
- 22:44given to Him by the Father. He took on the unique job of
- 22:47managing the entire universe in order to accomplish redemption.
- 22:50He was the Father's vice measurement for that specific
- 22:53task. So delivering up the Kingdom
- 22:55doesn't mean Christ stops being God or stops raining.
- 22:58Not at all. Scripture is clear on his
- 23:00eternal reign. Luke 1 says of his Kingdom there
- 23:03shall be no end. Daniel 7 says his dominion is an
- 23:07everlasting dominion. So the distinction is purely
- 23:10functional. It's tied to the purpose of the
- 23:12historical process. Precisely, the Commission ends
- 23:15when the design is accomplished. Since the task of gathering the
- 23:18elect, defeating their enemies, and bringing them to glory is
- 23:21now done, That specialized management function is formally
- 23:24delivered back to God the Father.
- 23:26Christ continues to reign as God and as head of His church
- 23:29forever, but that special office tied to overcoming enemies is
- 23:33concluded. That brings the entire history
- 23:36of the work of redemption to its most perfect theological end.
- 23:40Yes, we've traced the whole story from the preparatory
- 23:42stages of grace, through the cataclysm of the general
- 23:45judgement to the eternal state where the Church is secure, the
- 23:48enemies are subdued, and the full purpose of the Triune God
- 23:51is realized. That was an incredibly detailed
- 23:54step by step account. We started with the age of grace
- 23:57and we've ended with the church entering complete eternal glory.
- 24:01It paints a picture where all of history moves with a purpose.
- 24:04Edward really did map out this progression to highlight the
- 24:07huge scope of Christ triumph over sin, Satan, death, and
- 24:12hell. It confirms that history isn't
- 24:14random, but moves with sovereign certainty toward this final,
- 24:18glorious end. And everything that happens in
- 24:21our lives now, even the greatest spiritual blessings we get, they
- 24:24are all temporary, all designed to prepare us for that moment
- 24:28when we put on incorruptible, unfading glory, their shadows
- 24:32pointing to the real substance. Which brings us to a final
- 24:35thought for you to carry with you.
- 24:37Edward shows us that the final state of perfection requires the
- 24:40demolition of the old order by fire.
- 24:42The entire world, the whole scene of redemption's progress,
- 24:45has to be consumed before the highest glory can be enjoyed.
- 24:48So if God says the entire material world, the context for
- 24:52the fall and the struggle is unfit for the final state, what
- 24:55does that say about the preparatory nature of even the
- 24:57very best spiritual victories we experienced in this life?
- 25:00Consider the things you value most right now, your spiritual
- 25:04disciplines, your ministry, your knowledge.
- 25:07What specific shadows in your current life are you in?
- 25:09Tina? Painting will give way to that
- 25:11ultimate substance of glory when you see the judge ascending with
- 25:15his perfected church. That's the scale Edwards forces
- 25:18us to confront. We hope this deep dive has
- 25:20equipped you with a more informed and detailed vision of
- 25:23the powerful, inevitable hope that is set before us.
- 25:26Until next time.
