North Carolina schools now let students miss class for religious instruction—up to four hours weekly—with parental consent and homework make-up required. Wake County’s board, however, wants to stick to just one hour, citing disruption concerns—even though some members argued travel time in the large county makes one hour inadequate. The state law, part of this summer’s budget, supports moral and religious development through outside groups, not school staff. A vote on Wake’s policy is coming up next week.
