- 0:00Speaker 1: Right now, the NewsRadio 1110 KFAB Certified Transmission Sports Brief
- 0:05Speaker 1: with Jim Rose and Sean Callahan. Do either of you
- 0:08Speaker 1: know the history of the Floyd or Rosedale rivalry between
- 0:11Speaker 1: Iowa and Minnesota? Sean, I'll let you take this one. Well,
- 0:14Speaker 1: you are forgiven, but do you know the history of
- 0:17Speaker 1: this rivalry?
- 0:19Speaker 2: I know there's a trophy with a pig.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Okay, that's good.
- 0:22Speaker 2: And I know it's been around for a really long time.
- 0:24Speaker 2: That's what I can share.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Okay, what about you, Voorhees? Do you know anything about
- 0:28Speaker 1: the history of this rivalry?
- 0:29Speaker 2: A pig....
- 0:31Speaker 1: This is Floyd Mayweather. No, not Floyd Mayweather. Not Tim Floyd.
- 0:38Speaker 1: This is Floyd the Barber. This is your and Sean's segment.
- 0:41Speaker 1: I'm over here eating a sandwich. Since Nebraska's off, this
- 0:45Speaker 1: is as close as we're going to get to a
- 0:46Speaker 1: game of interest tomorrow. So it goes back to 1934
- 0:49Speaker 1: when the Iowa and Minnesota people hated so much that
- 0:52Speaker 1: a bunch of Iowa people threatened to lynch the Minnesota
- 0:54Speaker 1: football team if it won the game. Trying to tamp
- 0:58Speaker 1: down emotions. The governor of Minnesota, Floyd Olson, sent a
- 1:02Speaker 1: telegram to Governor Clyde Herring of Iowa, saying, I'm sure
- 1:05Speaker 1: your people won't lynch our football team.
- 1:08Speaker 2: And as a.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Gesture of good sportsmanship, I'll bet you a prized pig
- 1:11Speaker 1: from Rosedale that the Gophers will win. After which, Herring
- 1:15Speaker 1: picked up a prized beauty from a pig farm in
- 1:19Speaker 1: Fort Dodge, Iowa, and walked it into the carpeted office
- 1:22Speaker 1: of Governor Olson the Friday before the game. And we
- 1:26Speaker 1: all know what happens when a pig is on a carpet. Sean,
- 1:30Speaker 1: I can confirm, Jim's not reading this from anywhere.
- 1:33Speaker 2: There you go.
- 1:35Speaker 1: And you can wow your friends with that, Sean, down
- 1:36Speaker 1: there at your Horty Toity Country Club in Lincoln. Now,
- 1:39Speaker 1: let's visit about the keys to the game. I'm not
- 1:41Speaker 1: sure which game. Are we talking Westside-Millard South? Are the
- 1:44Speaker 1: keys to that game tonight?
- 1:45Speaker 2: Well, yeah, we've got probably, guys, one of the biggest
- 1:48Speaker 2: regular season high school games that we've had in this city,
- 1:51Speaker 2: in this state, in a long time. I mean, obviously... 8-0, 8-0,
- 1:56Speaker 2: two Elite 11 Power 4 quarterbacks. I don't know if
- 1:59Speaker 2: you guys followed to Braylon Warren, Westside's quarterback who's committed
- 2:02Speaker 2: to Missouri. Matt Campbell flew in to Omaha this week
- 2:07Speaker 2: and offered him Penn State head coach Matt Campbell. So
- 2:10Speaker 2: the Nittany Lions are trying to make a run at
- 2:12Speaker 2: Braylon Warren as we speak. And obviously Trey Taylor's having
- 2:18Speaker 2: an outstanding year for Millard South. They have played everybody
- 2:22Speaker 2: on that schedule. Miller North, they played a top Kansas
- 2:24Speaker 2: City team, a top St. Louis team, and they continue
- 2:28Speaker 2: to win. Omaha North, so this will be another test
- 2:32Speaker 2: for Miller South. I mean, Westside's probably the favorite going in.
- 2:36Speaker 2: They have the more complete roster in terms of the
- 2:38Speaker 2: line of scrimmage, so we'll see. what the crowd is tonight.
- 2:42Speaker 2: It should be a beautiful night for football. If this
- 2:44Speaker 2: could potentially be the rematch of the state championship game
- 2:47Speaker 2: in a few weeks down in Lincoln.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, very probably this will be a rematch. These are
- 2:50Speaker 1: the two very best teams in Class A. The closest
- 2:53Speaker 1: that Millard South has seen this kind of material probably
- 2:58Speaker 1: was that opening game against Millard North when Troy Pittman,
- 3:01Speaker 1: if he had not been kicked out of that game,
- 3:03Speaker 1: and that's highly controversial, then Millard North might have won
- 3:07Speaker 1: that game. That's how good Pittman is.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah, Pittman was the best player on the field that night,
- 3:13Speaker 2: and they had a commanding lead. They had control of
- 3:16Speaker 2: the game, but a couple of bad long snaps also.
- 3:21Speaker 2: We know about long snaps in Nebraska now, too, but
- 3:24Speaker 2: that allowed Miller South to win that game. Otherwise, Miller
- 3:27Speaker 2: North did have control, and they were playing really well
- 3:30Speaker 2: until Pittman got the two personal foul penalties, which ejected him.
- 3:34Speaker 1: All right, so what about Iowa-Minnesota? Is Iowa good enough
- 3:39Speaker 1: to be in the playoffs? Because their record, or their schedule,
- 3:41Speaker 1: I should say, would be very favorable the rest of
- 3:43Speaker 1: the way.
- 3:44Speaker 2: I think the general consensus is the Big Ten is
- 3:46Speaker 2: going to get three. The SEC is kind of hard
- 3:49Speaker 2: to gauge right now where they fall because they are
- 3:52Speaker 2: beating themselves up with this nine-game week schedule, which we
- 3:54Speaker 2: all knew would happen. It's taken this long for them
- 3:57Speaker 2: to get to the nine games. You're seeing teams beat
- 4:00Speaker 2: each other each week now. But I think Indiana and
- 4:03Speaker 2: Ohio State are the two today that are probably the
- 4:06Speaker 2: lead candidates to be in. And then you've got UCLA
- 4:09Speaker 2: in a really good spot. But Iowa and Oregon, I think,
- 4:13Speaker 2: are two others that you've got to keep tabs on
- 4:16Speaker 2: that could get in there with their schedules. USC as well, obviously,
- 4:21Speaker 2: has an opportunity to find their way in the playoffs.
- 4:23Speaker 2: But the Oregon loss might hurt them in the end. But, yeah,
- 4:27Speaker 2: those three or four teams all have an opportunity to
- 4:30Speaker 2: get to maybe a 10-2. And I think that would,
- 4:33Speaker 2: you know, in UCLA's case, they could get to 11-1.
- 4:36Speaker 2: But Iowa, their quarterback situation is, you know, they kind
- 4:41Speaker 2: of have some instability there right now. So it will
- 4:43Speaker 2: be interesting what Kirk Ferentz does in this game as
- 4:46Speaker 2: far as who they play and how it plays out
- 4:49Speaker 2: of the quarterback position.
- 4:50Speaker 1: It looks like Kate Linsky is going to start for
- 4:52Speaker 1: them in this game. And Brown is the number two,
- 4:53Speaker 1: even though he's 100% healthy from his bad shoulder. All right, Sean,
- 4:57Speaker 1: it's 6 o'clock tonight with the Husker Online pregame show,
- 5:00Speaker 1: which will be very, very handy for all you people
- 5:02Speaker 1: that will be caught up in traffic ahead of the
- 5:03Speaker 1: Westside-Millard South game.
