- 0:08All right, good afternoon. Welcome Melory Condon on a
- 0:12Thursday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 0:14back at it for the next 6 hours. Appreciate you starting your
- 0:18afternoon here with myself and Trent Condon will take you up
- 0:20until 2:00 off the bench to until 5:00 and then over a time
- 0:24Iowa from 5:00 until 6. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:29program. Just one guest in the first hour
- 0:31of the show, Lee Sterling, paramountsports.com.
- 0:34Timely data have Lee. We'll talk sports wagering with
- 0:38Lee Sterling. Why the tenor of our show
- 0:40changed this morning, did it not?
- 0:42Lee Sterling coming up at 12:30. He's got a handful of games that
- 0:45he'll pine on. And then if you'd like more
- 0:46information, if you're so inclined, he'll give you an
- 0:49opportunity to or give you the details how you can contact Lee.
- 0:53In our number 2, we'll do a little football conversation
- 0:56with two of our regional teams. We'll start with Dane Mazzutani,
- 1:00who's in LA covering the Chargers and the Vikings
- 1:04tonight. It's certainly a game.
- 1:05I, I can't wait this one of all the Thursday night ones, this
- 1:08one's got my attention as it does.
- 1:10I'm guessing a lot of you, 3 1/2 the number there.
- 1:13We'll talk to Dane Mazatani on the Vikings to kick off our
- 1:16number 2. And then Dave
- 1:18syndicanzonecoverage.com. Another game that's on my list
- 1:23of games to watch. Well, it's only one.
- 1:24There's Sunday Night Football, right?
- 1:26It's the Packers and the Steelers.
- 1:28Certainly some intrigue in that one.
- 1:30And then Stephen M simple in his weekly segment, we'll talk about
- 1:33Nebraska versus Northwestern guessing.
- 1:36We'll take a look back at the Minnesota, just a guess, just a
- 1:39guess that that might come up. And then Trent will make some
- 1:43plays. Circus Sports sponsored that.
- 1:45So I tried to warn him. I tried at the end of the show
- 1:49after he gives his walk off 4213, Yeah.
- 1:51What did you say? I said sip, sip, sip, sip, sip.
- 1:53Wait, you can't just walk out with that team that have beat
- 1:57him four in a row, 4213? It's the delusion.
- 2:01It's the delusion of not just the fan base, but their media.
- 2:06It doesn't help them. It hurts them as a program, as
- 2:10an organization, as a football program, that media, very little
- 2:14accountability. It hurts them.
- 2:16There's too much fanboy. And I love SIP, you know that.
- 2:20I love hanging out with SIP. That's like giving SIP a hard.
- 2:23Time which I'm guessing he will start cutting up at 1:30.
- 2:26You know where he got off. I think got got LED down the
- 2:29wrong path. He's very close.
- 2:31What's Rayola? Dominic Rayola, the former
- 2:34lineman that played there and had such a decorated career.
- 2:37He got very close sipping him were were very close.
- 2:40And even after his Nebraska days, they remained so.
- 2:43And he's the new offensive line coach, right?
- 2:46And what did Zip tell us before the year?
- 2:48Oh, they're going to be better than.
- 2:49Iowa better than Iowa, but that's offensive lines in the
- 2:52country and I'm guessing he was the Fed that information from
- 2:55his friend and that is certainly been the furthest thing from
- 2:59reality because these guys are bad.
- 3:02How big this is going to sound crazy.
- 3:04It's but I but I truly believe what I'm about to say.
- 3:08How big is this Nebraska Northwestern game when it comes
- 3:10to Matt rule? This is a team you should stomp
- 3:14because Nebraska's air quote back right?
- 3:17Their their resumes are similar. In fact, Northwestern might be a
- 3:21little bit shinier at this point.
- 3:22But if you get beat by northwestern on the heels of
- 3:25getting embarrassed by Minnesota, all of a sudden this
- 3:28mat rule is our guy. He's we're back.
- 3:30We're on our way. You know, not what they're going
- 3:32to be ever again, but certainly the the worm is turned.
- 3:36This is a big spot. Last year they raced out five
- 3:40and one. Yep, lost four in a row, finally
- 3:44punch bowl eligibility, then lose to Iowa.
- 3:47This year, they're five and two, and if you lose at home to
- 3:51Nebraska, this is what awaits them.
- 3:54Northwestern. Yeah, or Northwestern.
- 3:56Yeah, USC on the road at UCLA. Not the Gimme we thought.
- 4:01Penn State team that didn't look like they quit Saturday night.
- 4:04Yeah. I mean, the the freshman
- 4:05quarterback's not very good, but maybe he'll be by that point,
- 4:08he'll have a couple of games under his belt.
- 4:09So you would expect he would take a step, step forward.
- 4:12I agree. OK.
- 4:12And then Iowa. Yeah.
- 4:15Could you imagine this team, after finally getting right no
- 4:18missing a bowl game again it it starts with.
- 4:23Not without the realm of possibility, Trent.
- 4:25It's it's crazy to say and. Rules pulling off the old Frosty
- 4:28the coach man calling out people.
- 4:31They're one people under the bus.
- 4:33That we've reached that stage. We're at that spot.
- 4:36Yeah, we're at that spot. They got to five wins in his
- 4:38first year, proceeded to lose 4 consecutive.
- 4:41And then it went the other way. Falls apart quickly.
- 4:45It's a huge game for that reason.
- 4:47I'm anyway. So let's talk about the big
- 4:50story of the day. And obviously there are two
- 4:52different paths to this gambling story that apparently it's just
- 4:56the tip of the iceberg is what we're hearing of the of the two,
- 5:00I'm not sure which one disappoints me more.
- 5:05Obviously, it's the Chauncey Billups and the other people who
- 5:09were used to lure marks into these rigged card games.
- 5:15Knowing that the person that they were trying to get involved
- 5:18in these card games was about to lose hundreds of thousands or
- 5:22millions of dollars. That tells me a lot about the
- 5:24person that Chauncey Billups is and that doesn't pay the very
- 5:28kind picture. When you hear the La Costa
- 5:31Nostra involved in the mafia in any of this stuff, that one is a
- 5:36bad scandal. The one that pisses.
- 5:39And I'm, I'm guessing I'm, I'm not putting words in your mouth,
- 5:41but you feel the same way. And I'm not being preachy
- 5:44because you and I have preached about this until the freaking
- 5:46cows come home. And it's the fact that inside
- 5:50information and transparency and availability reports and the one
- 5:56the former assistant coach LeBron James's friend Damon
- 6:00Jones had information before LeBron James hit the injury
- 6:05report that he wasn't going to play and try to sell that
- 6:09information and a proves our point that this is going on.
- 6:15But please don't be naive to just think that this is a pro
- 6:19thing. We are not signaling out anyone
- 6:21by by in this discussion. I'm not I don't think you are
- 6:25either. It's everywhere these
- 6:27availability reports need to be need to have started coming out
- 6:32when PASPO was overturned in 2019.
- 6:36It took years for it to happen. It's finally here.
- 6:40But the the reason that these guys are being caught now is
- 6:43because of legal sports wagering, because there is a
- 6:47path to breaking these scandals and to cleaning this up.
- 6:53You can come up with ideas to try and limit it.
- 6:56Maybe we shouldn't be able to bet on player props period,
- 7:00whether it's college or pro if because you know that
- 7:04Washington's going to get involved in this and somebody's
- 7:07going to want to see their name in the paper if they get back to
- 7:09work. So maybe it's that.
- 7:13Maybe it's a state by state basis.
- 7:16I know in the state of I you cannot bet on player props when
- 7:19it comes to the college players, but just the locals, the locals,
- 7:22right, We can bet on, you know, Nebraska, Northwestern, have at
- 7:26it. Yes, mean for the longest time
- 7:28in Vegas you couldn't bet in the UNLV game.
- 7:31Right. For the longest time, yes.
- 7:33I remember I had some Wisconsin friends that went out there when
- 7:36they played UNLV and they're apoplectic.
- 7:39You could just bet on the game. When they went out there and
- 7:41they thought they were going to double things up, sure.
- 7:43Vegas, you're going to get my trip paid for the Maloofs.
- 7:46You remember the Maloofs brothers, They own the
- 7:47Sacramento Kings. They also owned the Palms.
- 7:50Palms and Palms Place, the two gambling entities off Strip.
- 7:54Because of their ownership, the NBA would not let them offer
- 7:57wagering on the Sacramento Kings back in the day.
- 8:00So it's here. It's not going away.
- 8:03The proliferation consideration of advertising.
- 8:05I don't think that a professional athlete was sitting
- 8:08in his hotel room and saw FanDuel, the DraftKings or
- 8:11whatever fill in the blank sports betting operator
- 8:14commercial. All right, I'm going to start
- 8:16betting. This is the way.
- 8:17That you sold me. No, this has been going on
- 8:20forever. And now that it's now that there
- 8:22is transparency and some accountability with these firms
- 8:26that you know, that see an inordinate amount of bets and
- 8:28then tip off the the sports books or the authorities in
- 8:32both, in most cases both at the same time.
- 8:36This is good. This is good, but we shouldn't
- 8:38be surprised it's happening. But just the fact that, you
- 8:43know, Damon Jones knew inside information on at the time.
- 8:48The guy who was absolutely still on the peak of his powers in the
- 8:52NBA and knew he wasn't going to play and tried to sell
- 8:55information to encourage his betting friends that I've got
- 8:58inside info that he is not playing in this game.
- 9:00And that's why LeBron James, who has not been accused of doing
- 9:03anything wrong. He's just caught up in this
- 9:05because his friend apparently used the inside information on
- 9:09him at the time. So we'll see where it goes.
- 9:12Obviously everybody's innocent until proven guilty, but
- 9:16apparently this is the tip of the iceberg.
- 9:18Chauncey Billups has been paid leave type of thing.
- 9:22At this point, who knows where it's going to go, but they
- 9:26caught him for a reason. And one of the reasons is, is
- 9:29because of these companies that work behind the scenes to
- 9:31monitor all of these inordinate amount of bets was able to, you
- 9:37know, put this case together. We talk about the insider
- 9:41information and this happens a lot.
- 9:44This happens all over the place and there are a lot of angles to
- 9:48it, and I don't know if there's a way that you can combat that
- 9:50outside of what we're seeing here.
- 9:52One of the first places that my mind went as I was reading
- 9:55through the story and getting the information is, you said it
- 10:00now we have ways to stop this. How long this has been going?
- 10:03That's just that trend. How long?
- 10:05Right. You go back to CCNY if you don't
- 10:07know that story in college basketball, this was a high
- 10:10level program in New York City. They were hit.
- 10:12We saw it with Hawkins when he made his way to Iowa, was never
- 10:15eligible because of ties to investing.
- 10:18This has been happening well before you flipped on and saw
- 10:21that FanDuel ad, the DraftKings ad, when you're watching a game.
- 10:24This has been happening for a long time.
- 10:26But now with it becoming so prevalent, how many of these
- 10:30stories fell by the wayside that you never knew about because
- 10:33those opportunities were always out there.
- 10:34There was always a chance to do player props and people that put
- 10:37those numbers up offshore or with your bookie around the
- 10:41corner. Now we have a way to combat
- 10:43that. So I look at that in a positive
- 10:46light that it's happening, but I wonder how many of those things
- 10:48have happened. You mentioned the player prop
- 10:49part of it, and that's what all these stories are turning into,
- 10:52right from the first pitch of an ending in baseball to what we're
- 10:57seeing here is the player prop movement that is becoming big
- 11:00and big. And we're a couple little guys.
- 11:03But when you talk to the younger people, the people that bet,
- 11:06that's what they're involved in. It is so much bigger.
- 11:09Wave gambling ever what have anticipated.
- 11:11I thought it was bigger. Than in game betting because
- 11:13that was always going to be the biggest.
- 11:15I don't know, but at what I do know is with the younger people,
- 11:18it is huge and that's what it is.
- 11:20You know, I see it in our little discord we have for the video
- 11:23game league that we have with our KXO listeners.
- 11:26And when they're talking about every once in a while somebody
- 11:29will put up, hey, I had a big one and they're almost all
- 11:31player props. They're there anytime,
- 11:32touchdowns or first touchdown, you know, those kind of things
- 11:35and on and on and on. It's not the way that I bet all.
- 11:38All I wanted was games be able to do it legally.
- 11:40That's all I cared. About I want to win
- 11:41championships. Yes, but for the.
- 11:42Futures. For the younger people, that's
- 11:45and we're seeing that connection because the guys playing the
- 11:48game are younger too and that connection's happening and it's
- 11:51obviously it's so much easier to manipulate what I'm doing as
- 11:56opposed to my team. We got to cover this 8 1/2.
- 11:59We don't have to cover this 8 1/2.
- 12:01Now point shaving is much more difficult because you're one of
- 12:04five on the floor, 1 of 11 on the field.
- 12:07It is different when what got a bad back?
- 12:11Let's set out this one. Oh, look at this.
- 12:13I just got to throw a ball to open up an inning.
- 12:14That's pretty easy, you know, and then we'll go from there
- 12:17here. Manipulation, when we become too
- 12:19small and everything that is available, that's where we're
- 12:22seeing the problems that have come up.
- 12:24And I think the perfect example is the first pitch of the game.
- 12:26Yeah. I mean, my God, I didn't even.
- 12:28You could make such a faint. Yeah, but apparently you can.
- 12:31And guys have been getting busted for it.
- 12:32Here's what I think might. Might curtail it a little bit.
- 12:36I hope that the athletes that are involved in this are prosec,
- 12:40not maybe prosecuted. Pay the most severe price they
- 12:44possibly can in addition to a fine.
- 12:46I'm not saying they have to go to well, maybe maybe a little
- 12:49time behind bars might not hurt. But obviously you lose your
- 12:52privilege to play that sport, right?
- 12:54Automatically you can never play your sport again.
- 12:57The the the penalties for these violations, for these crimes
- 13:03need to be as extreme as they possibly can cause maybe then,
- 13:08and only then might discurtail some of this when it comes to
- 13:11the athletes. That's a simple way to look at
- 13:14it. I think the best way to look at
- 13:15it Crazy story. It's crazy.
- 13:18It's nuts. I mean, we, we got, we got the
- 13:20mafia involved. We got the X-ray tables, the
- 13:25X-ray glass. I remember as a kid, and I
- 13:27wasn't nuts. I wasn't into AI, could buy a
- 13:30seahorse on the back of the Archie comic or I could buy
- 13:33X-ray glasses. Yes, absolutely.
- 13:35Did you read comics? Oh yeah.
- 13:37Not not much. But yeah, yeah, they were huge.
- 13:39But I was never really into mother than I could buy a, you
- 13:42know, you pour yourself a glass of water.
- 13:44Sea monkeys, not sea horse, sea monkeys.
- 13:47I could buy Sea Monkeys and and have them for a pet or I can get
- 13:50X-ray glasses. But just the the level of
- 13:54technology, the count carting, the cow card counting machine
- 13:59that is able to track what cards are coming up and relay this to
- 14:03someone in a backroom somewhere that's called the quarterback
- 14:06who would relay this information to someone who's actually at the
- 14:10table playing in these rigged games.
- 14:12The poker chip tray, the hidden cameras in the glasses in
- 14:18contact lenses. I mean, just to the extreme that
- 14:23these contests that these card games were rigged in the fashion
- 14:26that they were. And again, guys like Chauncey
- 14:29Billups, former athletes who give, I don't know, Joe Fan, an
- 14:34opportunity to come to a poker game to play with a whole bunch
- 14:38of former athletes that, you know, maybe you cheered for or
- 14:42you're cheered against. Or gosh, Darnie, you mean I'm
- 14:44going to be playing cards with this guy and this Hall of Famer
- 14:48over here? Hell yeah, I'm in Chauncey
- 14:51Billups, knowing full well that this mark, this mark is about to
- 14:57lose $1,000,000. Who does that to a quote?
- 15:00Acquaintance people that are sociopaths I, I, I can't
- 15:05envision it Money is the root of all evil, I guess.
- 15:10And you look at these guys these are not poor people no, that's
- 15:12why they reach out to them. These are not people that are
- 15:14struggling financially and yet still to get help I mean, how
- 15:17much is enough? I think we learned more and more
- 15:20that for people with money, I guess it's never enough.
- 15:23I guess you look at the career earnings of those guys and what
- 15:26they are and what Terry Rogier, a pretty unknown guy, you know,
- 15:31almost $1,000,000 or $100 million, he sees me in his
- 15:34career. Yeah, $94 million contract at
- 15:37the end. It's unbelievable the money in
- 15:38the NBA, there's only so many roster spots.
- 15:40You have to spend it all and the money's kind of the same as the
- 15:43NFL. You know where you're spreading
- 15:45that over 53 and a practice squad.
- 15:47You got 15 guys. That's why they're that's why
- 15:50it's so crazy. Let's get Pete in here.
- 15:52Pete, welcome to the pro. I I honestly thought today and I
- 15:54couldn't wait to talk about this story.
- 15:56I thought you and I were going to start the day with this
- 15:58college basketball. The fact that G League players
- 16:01that didn't sign with an agent or we're never drafted, who are
- 16:06labouring in the G League for $40,000 a year, all of a sudden
- 16:10you're going to be able to return to college basketball and
- 16:13make hundreds of thousands of dollars.
- 16:16I thought that's what we would be starting about and I would be
- 16:18quizzing you. Good for the game, bad for the
- 16:20game. Can you blame these guys, blah,
- 16:22blah, blah. This took an unbelievable turn.
- 16:25Hello, Pete, How are you? Hey, I'm doing all right.
- 16:29So first of all, we've seen previous gamblers.
- 16:32Who's the quarterback for the Raiders that had all those?
- 16:35Issues, Yeah, Arch Lister. Our gamblers are gamblers are
- 16:38like Alcoholics or drug addicts, right?
- 16:41You can watch everybody around you bottom out, but unless you
- 16:43do it, they're not like, yes, these guys serve time and who
- 16:49does that to people, but they're not going to deter anybody else
- 16:52with a gambling addiction in the NBA or in football to to not
- 16:57gamble because, you know, they may keep people who are, you
- 17:02know, thinking about doing it, But if you have an addiction or
- 17:06an issue, you're going to gamble regardless of what anybody.
- 17:08Else, sadly, you're 1000% right. Pete, thanks for the call.
- 17:12Appreciate it. Yeah, go.
- 17:13You got another point. I was going to say on the
- 17:15college basketball thing, I'm torn on this because like those
- 17:22pro players that come up or those those European players
- 17:26come out of academies where they're paid to develop and
- 17:29stuff and then they come over to college and ultimately is the
- 17:34goal to keep college basketball amateur?
- 17:39What that used to be? Amateur or is the goal to create
- 17:42the best watching? Experience.
- 17:44That's the answer. Because of the money.
- 17:46For four years and pay them. I'd rather I thought basketball
- 17:4930 years ago and guys stayed for four years and we've had guys
- 17:52who could have been playing pro was better than some of the
- 17:55product we get now. And so if that means bringing in
- 17:59guys for four years, you're paying so I can get the best
- 18:02product on the floor and know the guys on my team, I'd just
- 18:05rather see four year contracts that are held, they're held
- 18:08accountable for and keep guys around.
- 18:11Yeah, unfortunately, I think the genies on the ball appreciate
- 18:14the call. I don't know how you go back.
- 18:17Look, these these these G League players that were never drafted,
- 18:20never signed with an agent, I get, I get their argument.
- 18:24I get their legal argument. And five years ago, I would have
- 18:28been losing my mind. I would too have now.
- 18:30NIL is here. OK?
- 18:32I mean, the guy from BYU is apparently making $5,000,000.
- 18:36That's what they're. How do you say his name starts
- 18:38with D Dyster or something like $5,000,000 for his freshman
- 18:42campaign? And and it's Debbanska.
- 18:47Debanska, thank you. Guys are toiling in the G League
- 18:50for $40,000 a year. Yeah.
- 18:53And you can go back and you can make 6 figures a minimum.
- 18:56Minimum. And probably more than that for
- 18:59guys like this. And how long is it, Trent, until
- 19:01guys who did sign with an agent and didn't make it in the NBA,
- 19:07they take that case to court? Will they win?
- 19:10And then how many are going to be, you know, coming back and
- 19:13knocking on the door of college athletics?
- 19:15It changes every freaking month. You got the WNBA, what they are
- 19:20potentially talking about doing. You see this story?
- 19:21You know what's that? They are thinking about allowing
- 19:25college players to be drafted the WNBA and go back and forth
- 19:30the potential of yes. So you can play from November
- 19:34till the end of March? Yep Yep.
- 19:36Take a couple of months off. Not even a couple.
- 19:38I mean, you go right into training camp.
- 19:39Well, training camps are then, Yeah, it's in April or early
- 19:41May, right? So you take whatever four or
- 19:43five weeks off. Season finishes, you go now
- 19:47there's not many players that are going to be able to help and
- 19:50do that, but it's yet another some for sure, right?
- 19:54Paige Becker's would've. And in today's.
- 19:56Evelyn Clark, obviously would've.
- 19:57Well, she's got a year of eligibility.
- 19:59Can she go back to Iowa for a year?
- 20:02Imagine that one. Yeah.
- 20:04She hit user COVID year. But didn't.
- 20:06That's true. I don't think she needs to.
- 20:08No, I don't think she needs to either, but that I did not see
- 20:11that story. Now they're going through
- 20:14negotiations. And when those things happen,
- 20:17when you're going through Cbas, a lot of wild stuff gets thrown
- 20:20out there. I think the likelihood is
- 20:21incredibly small that that actually actually comes to
- 20:24fruition. But just another one of these.
- 20:26And again, how your mind can be changed.
- 20:30I know there's a lot of people out there and I hear from them
- 20:32that just they hate college sports and what they're turning
- 20:35into. It's the old evolve or die,
- 20:38right? This is our new reality.
- 20:40I still love college sports. I still had a hell of a time at
- 20:43Kinder Stadium on Saturday and I'm still feeling it because I'm
- 20:46getting old. But that that that's never going
- 20:50to leave me I whatever iteration it turns out.
- 20:53For the uniform and you share for the name on the front.
- 20:55It's old Seinfeld thing, right? You're chair for laundry.
- 20:57Yeah, that's true. And and that laundry is always
- 21:00going to be there no matter what happens.
- 21:01Players getting paid, whatever it looks like when they
- 21:04eventually become employees. And they will, yeah, maybe not
- 21:07the foreseeable future, but it will happen eventually.
- 21:09And when that happens, I know there will be more people that
- 21:11are upset about that. I'm still going to watch.
- 21:14I'm still going to be there and hopefully I'm still going to
- 21:16have a microphone to talk about it.
- 21:17Yeah, fascinating story. All right, Lee Sterling is
- 21:21coming. I just want to say this because
- 21:23I started my day reading an indictment, and I'm not going to
- 21:26break the story. I'm going to let the Register do
- 21:28it. But he did it again.
- 21:30And if you've listened to or read it, anything about the, you
- 21:35can connect the dots who I'm talking about.
- 21:36It's the exact same thing. And he's been indicted again.
- 21:40And I'll let the Register break the story.
- 21:43I'll leave it at that. But it's just unbelievable that
- 21:47people don't have Google. How do you not have Google?
- 21:51It's 2020. Well, it started in 2024, just
- 21:56after he got out the first time. He's done it again.
- 21:58Same. Deal.
- 21:59Yeah, the exact. Same thing.
- 22:01Exact same thing. Yep, the only Condon underway on
- 22:06a Thursday. We've got a keyword to give you.
- 22:10And it is a Thursday, right? Sure it is.
- 22:12Why are the keywords scratched out on this one, I wonder?
- 22:14Do you have them in front of you?
- 22:15I do not. All right, head to KX and o.com.
- 22:19The keyword this hour is Grand. Grand at KX and o.com.
- 22:23Your chance to win $1000 grand at KX and o.com.
- 22:27Your chance to win a grand at KX and o.com in this nationwide
- 22:31contest. Lee Sterling joins Trenton I on
- 22:34the other side side our number 2.
- 22:36We're going to do some NFL Dane Mazatani's covering the Vikings
- 22:38in LA Sofi tonight. We'll talk to Dane about that.
- 22:43Dave syndicate on Sunday Night Football.
- 22:45Pretty good match. Are you intrigued by this
- 22:46matchup? I am Green Bay in Pittsburgh,
- 22:48Yes, absolutely I am too. I don't believe in Pittsburgh at
- 22:51all. I don't either.
- 22:52But I need to see more out of the Packers.
- 22:54Do you think on both cases, right?
- 22:56Yes, Yeah, It's kind of a show and tell game for both, for both
- 22:59teams. I agree with you wholeheartedly,
- 23:01as I normally do. 1225 Miller and Condon underway on a
- 23:05Thursday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 23:07Network. Flagship Des Moines sports
- 23:09station. 106.3 KXNO. I'm Hillary Connivan.
- 23:23Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio Network, Lee Sterling.
- 23:27Momentarily following Lee, we'll give 4 of you an opportunity to
- 23:30win some grub from the chicken coop.
- 23:32If you haven't played in the last 30 days, you are eligible
- 23:35to do so. Be listening for your cue to
- 23:37call. Let's get to our friend Lee
- 23:39Sterling. Another winning week for our guy
- 23:41at paramountsports.com. Lee joins us with a handful of
- 23:45games again this week. Lee Trenton, Ken, thanks for
- 23:47coming on. How are you?
- 23:49I'm good, I'm real good. We don't have that one marquee
- 23:51game, a lot of good ones, a lot of a lot of we're going to find
- 23:55out I think finally how good some of these teams are and then
- 23:59and the margins could be paper thin.
- 24:01Yep, I couldn't agree with you more.
- 24:02Lee, before we get to the games, obviously a huge gambling story
- 24:06that came out and yesterday you've been in the gambling
- 24:09space for an incredibly long time.
- 24:11Give us a take away or two that you took away from that.
- 24:13And these stories, they become more and more and it seems a lot
- 24:17of times kind of connected to player props.
- 24:19What your take away is it as you read another one of these
- 24:22stories? Well, they might be, you know,
- 24:24they're obviously totally independent of each other.
- 24:26But the situation with Chauncey Phillips, greed, obviously, I
- 24:31mean, unless he is in big time debt, I mean, why you would get
- 24:36involved with a, with a crime family makes no sense at all.
- 24:39He's making a huge salary as a coach.
- 24:41He's made over $100 million. So on the other case, you know,
- 24:46who knows, you know, maybe Terry Rozier, we don't know all the
- 24:49facts, but maybe he just told from friends of his that, you
- 24:52know, he's probably not playing much today.
- 24:54So, but a huge mistake. You have to watch what you say.
- 24:57And if he's tied to it, you know, he can end up losing over
- 25:01$24 million in salaries so and possibly go to jail.
- 25:05Just horrible. You don't like to see these
- 25:07things happen. He was, I mean, the, the, the
- 25:09people that he told only put $13,000 in wagers down.
- 25:13So I doubt he was doing it for a cut of the winnings.
- 25:16You know, and Trent and I've been harping on this since pass,
- 25:18but it was overturned. Just transparency.
- 25:21And thankfully now more college teams are starting to put out
- 25:24availability reports because somebody knows when somebody's
- 25:27not going to play, as was the case apparently with LeBron
- 25:29James. Anyways, that's how we started
- 25:32the show. Let's get through the here and
- 25:33now. And that's the the five pack of
- 25:35games you're going to opine. On Let's Kick It Off in the Big
- 25:3812, Cincinnati, undefeated in conference play, and Woulda
- 25:41Shoulda and that opening week of the season against Nebraska.
- 25:45Another lane 5 1/2 against Baylor, A Baylor team that has
- 25:48certainly been Jekyll and Hyde. It's been very up and down out
- 25:50of the Bears, That weird number. Not a field goal, not a
- 25:53touchdown in between. A 5 1/2 for the Bearcats.
- 25:56Yeah, so Baylor was plus 3 1/2 at TCU, now they're plus 5 1/2.
- 26:01I mean, the Bear Cat Bears, Baylor Bears are one in six
- 26:05against the spread this year, but they have talent on their
- 26:07team. Trust me, you have two very
- 26:10unheralded quarterbacks here putting up some big numbers.
- 26:13Baylor, Sorry, Robinson 21 touchdown, 7 interceptions,
- 26:18while you got Cincinnati's Brendan Sorsby 17 touchdowns at
- 26:22mind boggling. Only one interception here.
- 26:25Neither defense is very good, but at least Cincinnati has done
- 26:28a good job here of falling on fumbles.
- 26:31That's probably the difference here.
- 26:32So Baylor, I think eventually they're going to cover some
- 26:35games. This might be one of them.
- 26:36I just don't like Cincinnati lane points here as Cincinnati
- 26:39winning the game 3331, but I'll take the 5 1/2.
- 26:42Good stuff. UCLA may be the story in college
- 26:45football in the month of October, they Indiana one of the
- 26:48I mean just an unbelievable story that Signeti continues to
- 26:51write. Over 3 touchdowns, 21 1/2 the
- 26:54Hoosiers favored over the Bruins.
- 26:57Yeah, I I just think it's too much here.
- 26:59So UCLA is a completely different team than we saw the
- 27:03first couple weeks of the season here.
- 27:05We know Indiana bottom 15 and pace of play.
- 27:08They're going to have to finish drives a lot of times with a
- 27:10touchdown, my opinion to win. I like the fact that UCLA, they
- 27:14pushed the ball down the field now and I know the schedule
- 27:18makers didn't do them any favors going back and forth across the
- 27:21country here. But you have to factor in a team
- 27:24that has a top quarterback and Nico right right now is finally
- 27:28starting to show out why people loved him here.
- 27:31I think Indiana wins 3617 Bruins cover.
- 27:34Bruins with another cover as they they are a different team,
- 27:38no doubt. Let's go to a game that used to
- 27:40just be so huge and it's not the case here recently.
- 27:43Michigan State Michigan in state rivalry Big number for the
- 27:46Wolverines is their lane 14 1/2 and.
- 27:49And, and Michigan is a better team.
- 27:51I mean, there's no doubt about that.
- 27:52But this is a rivalry game, maybe one of the top five or six
- 27:56in the country. This is Big Brother and little
- 27:58brother. Whoever loses is going to pick
- 28:01fights. I mean, it's non-stop here.
- 28:05It's all offseason. You know, we just don't don't
- 28:08see it as much in the South. I mean, you're a little bit
- 28:10closer to it. So you know what it's all about.
- 28:13Michigan did respond well off the road.
- 28:15Lost to USC with a 17 point win. Michigan concluded a stretch
- 28:19with three Rd. trips and four games.
- 28:22Lost all four. Not that Indian, it was expected
- 28:24to lose to them, but the sporty's issue here is defence
- 28:28giving up 32 points per game, 6.2 yards per play.
- 28:33But defence is about effort, it's about hustle and you can
- 28:36make up for some of it, especially in a rivalry game
- 28:39here. 14 1/2 points laying on the road to me is too much in a
- 28:44rivalry game. Michigan wins 30 to 21 sporty
- 28:47covers. Speaking of rivalry games, BYU
- 28:51in Utah apparently is nasty rivalry, as there is.
- 28:53BYU prevailed. Now they go on the road and they
- 28:56come to our state. Up in Story County, take on the
- 28:59Cyclones. Iowa State 3 point favored over
- 29:02unbeaten BYU Lee. If Iowa State defense was just a
- 29:07little bit better, I would think about backing them here.
- 29:10But you know, you're down your top 2 quarterbacks and and these
- 29:13are guys that maybe your best two players on the defense.
- 29:17They're that good. So BYU right now, you know, they
- 29:20just hang in there. They don't make many mistakes.
- 29:24They're one of these teams that controls the ball, not going to
- 29:27turn the ball over, plays good special teams.
- 29:31I like BYUI think, I don't think they're going to keep winning
- 29:34every week, but they're going to eventually lose again.
- 29:36But I think they win this game here 2620.
- 29:39It's the battle for the pig Floyd of Rosedale, Minnesota and
- 29:42Iowa. Feels like a low scoring game to
- 29:45me. Two teams going to smash into
- 29:47each other for 60 minutes of football.
- 29:49But it's north of a touchdown. 8 1/2 currently the number.
- 29:52Hawkeye is the favorite. Yeah, and, and the negative here
- 29:55from Minnesota is both losses were on the road where they
- 29:58total scoring only 17 points. But if you watch them, they play
- 30:02play within themselves, very similar to Iowa.
- 30:04So defense isn't quite as good here, but you got to think that
- 30:09maybe they've got a trick or two up their sleeve.
- 30:11You know, this is one of these games they want to win.
- 30:13They've lost 9 out of 10 for the Florida Rosedale Trophy here.
- 30:17So I just think that Minnesota is getting better.
- 30:21And I think the difference even with the home field advantage is
- 30:23like 5 1/2. That's six points.
- 30:25So I'm going to go with the value here.
- 30:26I have, I will win in this game. 2420 Minnesota coverage.
- 30:30Let's stay in the Big 10. It's your game of the week.
- 30:33It's Nebraska Northwestern Huskers, A7 point favorite.
- 30:37If the audience wants more information on how to get that
- 30:39game of the week from Paramount Sports Lee Sterling, how do they
- 30:42do it? Yep.
- 30:43Just call 800-400-9741. We'll give this game out, this

- 31:25week just $197.00 one place paramountsports.com.
- 31:30Thank you, bud. Appreciate it, Lee.
- 31:31We'll talk to you next week. Lee Sterling,
- 31:33paramountsports.com as he checks in on his plays of the.
- 31:37Week sounds like he needs to be in circumventions.
- 31:39Just think of the exact same thing.
- 31:41Boy, boy, that would be. He'd be in front this quarter, I
- 31:44would think at that. .0 Absolutely How's millions going
- 31:47for you? I don't even know you checked,
- 31:51checked out, You know, I, I don't think I'm going to
- 31:54participate in that contest. Not going to do millions, No, I
- 31:57think now a year ago at this time, you said you're only going
- 32:00to do. Millions.
- 32:01Well, it the the the wound was still raw, I think when I
- 32:04proclaimed. That.
- 32:05Falsehood because I've been knocked out of Survivory.
- 32:08It's such a fun contest. It is.
- 32:10It truly is. It pisses you off.
- 32:13The sweat that you get, the, the interest you have in whatever
- 32:16game you're playing. It's well worth the money.
- 32:18It really is. It's just so, and especially for
- 32:21you. I mean, we're in the last week
- 32:22of October. My partner's still alive still.
- 32:25In it and I might be changing my original plan.
- 32:30Oh, so here we go. So I told you a week ago I was
- 32:33holding off to the Patriots because I was targeting this
- 32:36week. You know, there's something
- 32:38about that Cleveland defense that me leaves me a little
- 32:40concerned. They're very good.
- 32:41They're very good and Drake May young quarterback that is
- 32:45playing at an incredibly high level.
- 32:47They're just something that feels off.
- 32:50Can't put my there's nothing, there's nothing like
- 32:53statistically that I can point to off and I go back to the
- 32:57Bengals. If there's ever a time to use
- 33:00them, it's this week right against The Jets, at home
- 33:02against The Jets. I won't use them again.
- 33:04Like this would be the time. Am I overthinking it?
- 33:09Well, probably the answer is yes, but I understand why you're
- 33:12overthinking. It's you're live in an $18
- 33:13million contest, of course you're going to overthink.
- 33:16It and the Patriots still have. Speaking of The Jets.
- 33:19They've got to have them a time or two.
- 33:21But they do coming up to here in just a few weeks, Thursday Night
- 33:24Football on the 13th of November, they.
- 33:27Can they flex at that time? Please tell me they can flex at
- 33:29that time. I know they can flex.
- 33:32Yes, yes they can. I think they get 2 one or two
- 33:35flex that has to leave. But doesn't it have to be like
- 33:38over 30 days? I don't know the I think it
- 33:41might be already too tight to even flex out of that.
- 33:44But when I was looking through the Patriots schedule, I saw
- 33:46that one. Obviously at the end of the year
- 33:50they also get the Dolphins at home in Week 18.
- 33:54So help me out with this and if you're trying to get in the
- 33:57chicken coop, you're getting a busy signal, but we'll we'll
- 33:59unblock the phones in a second. How are your bears a touchdown
- 34:02dog in this game? Is Lamar Jackson going to play?
- 34:06Yes. You sure?
- 34:08No, But yes, I think he will. He went through practice
- 34:12yesterday as the number three. If this was Friday and we're
- 34:16having this talk, yeah, different.
- 34:17But he already went through Wednesday practice, at least out
- 34:21there. That tells me that he is going
- 34:23to go. Or he's trending in the right.
- 34:24Direction to go, Yeah, obviously something could happen.
- 34:26He could re tweak the hamstring, that could change it.
- 34:29But yeah, that he's going to go. You're saying put that in your
- 34:32back pocket? I, I just, I don't think that
- 34:36the, I mean, he's not gonna help the defense.
- 34:38No, that's true, right? But Caleb Williams has not been
- 34:41very good recently either. I'll defer to you on that.
- 34:43Yeah, he has struggled, and he struggled last week against the
- 34:47Saints at home. And you've used the Colts?
- 34:50Yep. And you've used the Chiefs or
- 34:53you're saving the Chiefs. You're.
- 34:54Saving them because they are involved in both the holidays.
- 34:57The short. Weeks.
- 34:58Yes, the holiday week. So because of that, that's the
- 35:00direction that I'm looking at. Can you imagine?
- 35:03He was in the Cincinnati Bengals with Joe Flacco, though.
- 35:08So it makes this contest fun. We've got a contest that you can
- 35:10play in right now. It's the chicken coop giveaway.
- 35:13First four callers at 515-284-5966.
- 35:17If you've not played in this contest in the last 30 days,
- 35:19we'll give you 4 games and a tie break.
- 35:21Get the most right. You get a $50.00 gift
- 35:23certificate from one of the chicken coops.
- 35:25Any one of them. The runner up will get a 20
- 35:28wings Miller and Condon back with the chicken coop giveaway.

- 36:19Hello, gentlemen. How are you guys today?
- 36:21Doing pretty well. Thursday Night Football.
- 36:23Chargers are a 3 1/2 point favorite tonight against the
- 36:26Vikings. I'll pick the Chargers and the
- 36:29points. Iowa State, give the points.
- 36:31You got it. Iowa State is giving 3 1/2 to
- 36:34BYU. Don't take BYU.
- 36:37Iowa gives 8 1/2 to the Gophers. Go Hawks.
- 36:42Broncos, a 3 1/2 point favorite over those Cowboys of Dallas.
- 36:47Is that game in Dallas? It is in Denver.
- 36:50Oh, I'm going to take. You know what?
- 36:52Let me make sure. Let me make absolute certainty.
- 36:55It is in Denver, yes. You're taking the Cowboys, did
- 36:57you say I'm sorry? I'll take the Cowboys, Sir.
- 37:00Got it. Yep.

- 37:10Appreciate the call. Thank you, guys.
- 37:12Yep, good to hear from you. And Kyle is next.
- 37:15Hello, Kyle, How are you? I'm doing well, good.
- 37:18Charges are a 3 1/2 point favorite over the Vikings
- 37:21tonight. Oh, give me a school, Iowa
- 37:24State, a 3 1/2 point favorite over BYUI.
- 37:28Think BYU outright. All right, Iowa 8 1/2 over
- 37:32Minnesota. I'm going to say Iowa wins, but
- 37:38I'll take the points. Taking the points.
- 37:39OK, Broncos a 3 1/2 point favorite over the Cowboys.
- 37:44And then we decided that is in Denver, right?
- 37:46Yes, it is. I'll take Denver, please.
- 37:49All right, total points Sunday Night Football, Green Bay,
- 37:51Pittsburgh closest without going over 5555.
- 37:57Thank you, Kyle, you have a good day.
- 37:59Thank you. Jim K is next.
- 38:02Hello Jim. How you doing guys?
- 38:04Good, good. Chargers 3 1/2 to the Vikings.
- 38:10I'll say the Vikings just to be different.
- 38:12OK? Iowa State is a 3 1/2 point
