- 0:00Speaker 1: Are taking photos, there is often something that draws their attention,
- 0:04Speaker 1: that makes them stop for a moment. Now, whether that's
- 0:07Speaker 1: a religious experience, whether that's an artistic experience, whatever it is.
- 0:11Speaker 2: But as we watch this beautiful.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Ceremony begin to unfold, Chris talk about just the draw
- 0:19Speaker 1: of that place as somewhere that people feel called to be.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Of course, I think we're experiencing that in real time
- 0:30Speaker 3: in this moment. I mean, we have not just world leaders,
- 0:33Speaker 3: but leaders from every faith tradition present here for this occasion.
- 0:37Speaker 3: And I think it's because of this draw. The office
- 0:40Speaker 3: of the papacy, yes, but this place that and what
- 0:43Speaker 3: it represents, the Office of Peter, and the architecture of course,
- 0:48Speaker 3: only buttresses that. And I think that is why we
- 0:52Speaker 3: feel the weight of the moment when we stand in
- 0:54Speaker 3: Saint Peter's and when we're there in this moment, watching
- 0:57Speaker 3: the opening of this first Mass, it is to draw
- 1:01Speaker 3: us in, uh, to contemplate, you know, two thousand years
- 1:06Speaker 3: of tradition.
- 1:07Speaker 1: And we will begin with a simple phrase that any

- 1:11:17Speaker 6: closing ourselves off in our small really feeling superior to
- 1:11:21Speaker 6: the world. We are called to offer God's love to
- 1:11:25Speaker 6: everyone in order to achieve that unity which does not
- 1:11:30Speaker 6: cancel out differences, but values the personal history of each
- 1:11:35Speaker 6: person and the social and religious culture of every people.
- 1:11:40Speaker 6: Brothers and sisters, this is the hour for love. The
- 1:11:44Speaker 6: heart of the Gospel is the love of God that
- 1:11:47Speaker 6: makes us brothers and sisters. With my predecessor Leo the thirteen,
- 1:11:52Speaker 6: We can ask ourselves today if this criterion were to

- 1:12:34Speaker 6: together as one people, as brothers, and let us walk
- 1:12:40Speaker 6: and love one another. Following the whole by Father's homily,
- 1:13:02Speaker 6: we pause to reflect on his words ahead of the
- 1:13:10Speaker 6: creed and the continuation of this liturgy. We notice that
- 1:13:19Speaker 6: he has laid out the focus for his pontificate, recalling
- 1:13:27Speaker 6: his predecessor Leo the thirteenth and his immediate predecessor, Pope Francis.
- 1:13:36Speaker 6: And his word is encyclical fratelli ducti brothers and sisters.

- 1:45:12Speaker 6: those around us, as they do in Saint Peter's Square.
- 1:45:17Speaker 6: The recognition that we are called to reconcile with our
- 1:45:21Speaker 6: brothers and sisters before we partake in the communion of
- 1:45:26Speaker 6: the Lord, and priests take the consecrated hosts throughout deep square,
- 1:46:04Speaker 6: so that all the faithful who wish to do so,
- 1:46:06Speaker 6: we may receive the body and gold of our Lord
- 1:46:09Speaker 6: Jesus Christ.
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: The extraordinary view over the Vatican and Saint Peter's Square
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: and the induction mass of Pope Leo the fourteenth. I
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: want to bring in my panel briefly as they distribute
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: holy communion.
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: Father Kasicki.
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: Looking out over that crowd, it's hard not to think
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: about the contract for this man who served for decades
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: in Peru, who opened up soup kitchens and asked priests
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: to turn any space they had into centers for refugees,
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: and now virtually unheard of for most of the world,
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: only a cardinal in twenty twenty three, and now looking

- 1:47:42Speaker 6: but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed.
- 1:48:04Speaker 6: We may not be able to perceive communion with those
- 1:48:12Speaker 6: gathered in Saint peter Square and deft of spiritual communion.
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: My Jesus, we pause for the consecration.
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: But Father, what an extraordinary day, and what an extraordinary
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: moment for this man who now belongs to the world.
- 1:48:30Speaker 38: I think as he's giving communion, he's thinking the same connection.
- 1:48:35Speaker 38: It's the same communion in Saint Peter Square as he
- 1:48:37Speaker 38: gave when he was in Peru, everywhere he has served,
- 1:48:40Speaker 38: and I believe he feels that he's kind of bringing
- 1:48:45Speaker 38: that part of the world into Rome, into the center
- 1:48:48Speaker 38: of the church, and likewise focusing the church, because everyone
- 1:48:52Speaker 38: looks at him and recognizes exactly what you said, that
- 1:48:56Speaker 38: this is a man who fell in love with people
- 1:48:59Speaker 38: in the proof, free in the margins, and so he's
- 1:49:01Speaker 38: bringing in a sense, these two worlds together. No matter
- 1:49:05Speaker 38: how far away you are from the center of the
- 1:49:07Speaker 38: church governance, they're never far from Jesus Christ.
- 1:49:10Speaker 24: They're never far from the Gospel. And that's what the
- 1:49:13Speaker 24: church should be.
- 1:49:14Speaker 38: The church as beautiful as this is that the church
- 1:49:18Speaker 38: isn't all of us looking to one central city. It's
- 1:49:21Speaker 38: recognizing how it just like Bernini's Colonnade, it embraces the world.
- 1:49:26Speaker 38: And he had a beautiful metaphor when he says that
- 1:49:29Speaker 38: he wanted fishers of men who fished the waters of
- 1:49:33Speaker 38: the world, and he had a lot of beautiful metaphors
- 1:49:35Speaker 38: in his homily, but I was struck by that that
- 1:49:39Speaker 38: we really have to go to the seas, to all
- 1:49:41Speaker 38: the continents. An image that stood out for me was
- 1:49:44Speaker 38: at the very beginning when it was the Holy Father
- 1:49:48Speaker 38: of the Pope and his ministers. They represented all the
- 1:49:50Speaker 38: continents of the earth. And I think these are subtle
- 1:49:53Speaker 38: things he's doing, but they're showing the universal grasp. Catholic
- 1:49:59Speaker 38: means universe, and I think that's the gift he's giving
- 1:50:02Speaker 38: us today.
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: And liz Lav, while it is always true, certainly in
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: modern history, that you look out over that crowd and
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: you see a virtual united nations, what you see, or
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: what Pope Leo sees, is a college of cardinals and
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: a representations of countries that have never been represented in
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: this way by the Catholic Church before growing in so
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: many parts of the world, in Asia and in Africa.
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: So when he talks about the missionary spirit must animate us,
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: he is looking out over a sea of people whose.
- 1:50:41Speaker 2: Very lives are dedicated to that.
- 1:50:43Speaker 39: Liz I think it's an interesting little fact that the
- 1:50:48Speaker 39: very first foreign student to go to the university of
- 1:50:52Speaker 39: Bologna in fifteen forty was from Peru. So the very
- 1:50:57Speaker 39: first time you had a university student come from someplace
- 1:51:00Speaker 39: else to study the Pontiguli University, it was Diego di
- 1:51:03Speaker 39: Garvita from Peru, and as a diocese, Peru was actually created,
- 1:51:10Speaker 39: and I think it was fifteen to forty one under
- 1:51:13Speaker 39: Paul the third is one of the first great missionary dioceses.
- 1:51:16Speaker 39: So I think maybe not only do we have this
- 1:51:19Speaker 39: novelty of the College of the Cardinals, so this innovation
- 1:51:23Speaker 39: of looking out at these collaborators with the Holy Father
- 1:51:26Speaker 39: who are from all over the world, but certainly the
- 1:51:30Speaker 39: Catholic Church has been dialoguing not only going out to
- 1:51:34Speaker 39: the peripheries, but bringing the peripheries into the heart of
- 1:51:39Speaker 39: the Church for almost five hundred years. And I think
- 1:51:42Speaker 39: better than most Leo the fourteenth, who has gone from
- 1:51:47Speaker 39: this Chicago, for Heaven's sakes out into the very poor nations,
- 1:51:53Speaker 39: worked as a missionary. He really has a sense of
- 1:51:57Speaker 39: this coming and going, this bring the message of the
- 1:52:00Speaker 39: Lord out to the world, but also bringing.
- 1:52:03Speaker 28: People into the fold.
- 1:52:04Speaker 23: And that really was underscored by this.
- 1:52:06Speaker 39: Beautiful continuous percussion of his homilies of everything that involved unity,
- 1:52:14Speaker 39: harmony and peace.
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: Father, we both chuckled when she said Chicago, for Heaven's sakes.
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: But every single expert, at least the vast majority of them,
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: would talk about how Cardinal Provost was someone who could
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: obviously check the boxes right of the cardinals. But he's
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: an American. But you were saying when we were beginning
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: the mass and we were off camera that.
- 1:52:43Speaker 2: When he took that name, he gave up all of that.
- 1:52:46Speaker 2: He is now someone different.
- 1:52:48Speaker 12: He's not an.
- 1:52:49Speaker 2: American, he's not a Peruvian. He is the leader of
- 1:52:53Speaker 2: one point four billion global Catholics, listened to by.
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: So many more awesome responsibility he must feel.
- 1:53:02Speaker 2: And we heard at one point when he started to sing,
- 1:53:05Speaker 2: we thought a little catch in his throat.
- 1:53:08Speaker 38: Yes, I wonder sometimes that when the immensity of his
- 1:53:13Speaker 38: vocation catches up to him.
- 1:53:15Speaker 24: And yet I found a confidence in him from the
- 1:53:18Speaker 24: minute he came out.
- 1:53:19Speaker 38: I was surprised how he just came out and he
- 1:53:21Speaker 38: could greet the world with such confidence. And when I
- 1:53:24Speaker 38: hear him preach and speak, I see that confidence. And
- 1:53:27Speaker 38: he knows where he comes from. We hear we know
- 1:53:30Speaker 38: he's joked that his brothers are on television more than
- 1:53:33Speaker 38: he is. And they give us kind of the boy
- 1:53:36Speaker 38: from Chicago, the young man whom they identified as a
- 1:53:39Speaker 38: priest from the earliest of age. So they're not surprised,
- 1:53:43Speaker 38: and I think the fact that his family's not surprised
- 1:53:45Speaker 38: says something.
- 1:53:46Speaker 5: But he's not.
- 1:53:47Speaker 24: He doesn't distance himself from where he comes.
- 1:53:50Speaker 38: I think he's still going to be a White Sox fan.
- 1:53:53Speaker 38: Although he'll probably never go to a game again, he's
- 1:53:56Speaker 38: still going to keep that connection. He's going to know
- 1:54:00Speaker 38: where he's from. But it's not about where he's from,
- 1:54:03Speaker 38: it's rather how that informs what he does now. He has,
- 1:54:07Speaker 38: in a sense, become the pope of the world from
- 1:54:11Speaker 38: the US, and I think that's a gift to American
- 1:54:14Speaker 38: Catholics and a hope for the church.
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: And laying out before him, Liz, not just two hundred
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: and fifty thousand people, but possibilities. This fully pulpit, no
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: pun intended. This is a place where he speaks and
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: people listen, people all around the world. He laid out
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: the themes, he laid out his priorities in his homily.
- 1:54:40Speaker 2: He talked about love, he talked about peace, he talked
- 1:54:43Speaker 2: about service. In some ways echoing what we heard on
- 1:54:49Speaker 2: this very.
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: Same day for Pope Benedict, on this very same day
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: for Pope Francis.
- 1:54:54Speaker 2: But I also think uniquely Pope Leo, tell me what
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: you thought, well.
- 1:55:00Speaker 39: I saw a leader who was creating a brotherhood and
- 1:55:05Speaker 39: a sisterhood on a common mission. And that really the
- 1:55:09Speaker 39: underscoring the line that he really wanted to bring across
- 1:55:13Speaker 39: was a united church, really a vision of unity and
- 1:55:19Speaker 39: community that can go out and be.
- 1:55:21Speaker 2: Eleven in the world.
- 1:55:24Speaker 39: And so I think when we're talking, he's talking not
- 1:55:27Speaker 39: just to the diplomatic or leaders or the heads of
- 1:55:30Speaker 39: state in the foreground, but he's talking to every single
- 1:55:34Speaker 39: person in that magnificent theater of Saint Peter's Basilica, or
- 1:55:38Speaker 39: you're standing in this magnificent stage by Bernini. It's a
- 1:55:43Speaker 39: reminder that it's not just the job of the exalted,
- 1:55:47Speaker 39: it's the job of every person to find that harmony
- 1:55:51Speaker 39: in peace within. He spoke so much about understanding the
- 1:55:56Speaker 39: love that God has for each individual and needing to
- 1:55:59Speaker 39: understand and that love to be able to show it
- 1:56:02Speaker 39: to others. So I felt that while yes, this is
- 1:56:05Speaker 39: a world stage, one of the most beautiful things about
- 1:56:09Speaker 39: this sober, very contained event was the way he really
- 1:56:13Speaker 39: spoke to healing ourselves within so that we can be
- 1:56:17Speaker 39: better missionaries, all of us without and there.
- 1:56:20Speaker 2: Are many different ways father to be a missionary. This
- 1:56:23Speaker 2: is interesting.
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: We've just caught a glimpse, I believe, of Oprah sitting
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: with her best friend, Gail King, sitting with Maria Shriver,
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: from one of the most famous, if not the most famous,
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: Catholic family in America. But the comments that we've heard
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: in these last ten days from Catholics who have fallen
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: away from the church, who have said, now, maybe I
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: need to think about getting back the questions about a
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: church where more priests are retiring and dying than taking vows.
- 1:56:58Speaker 2: Just the ability to fire, whether it's specifically to.
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: A particular vocation or a particular faith, or just to
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: make people feel hope, which is what his brother said,
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: his brother, who's been on TV more than he has saying,
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: my brother pop Leo understands that people are searching for hope.
- 1:57:22Speaker 24: I think that is so true.
- 1:57:23Speaker 38: And he knows his own story and he doesn't think
- 1:57:27Speaker 38: he's better than any of us. He's been faithful to
- 1:57:30Speaker 38: his vocation. So that tells all of us.
- 1:57:32Speaker 24: As long as we're faithful to our vocation, we can grow.
- 1:57:36Speaker 38: There's always the question is a new pope going to
- 1:57:38Speaker 38: bring a bump in vocations to priesthood, religious life, married
- 1:57:43Speaker 38: life within the church, all our vocations. And we're seeing
- 1:57:46Speaker 38: a decline not just in priests and religious sisters, but
- 1:57:51Speaker 38: also in people getting married in the church. So will
- 1:57:54Speaker 38: that increase and will the pews fill up on Sundays?
- 1:57:57Speaker 38: I don't think it happens overnight. I think people can
- 1:58:00Speaker 38: see that he's a different kind of leader. We'll try
- 1:58:05Speaker 38: to compare him to heads of state and other influencers,
- 1:58:08Speaker 38: but he's not a TikTok or a YouTube influencer.
- 1:58:13Speaker 24: He's someone who says, this is.
- 1:58:15Speaker 38: Who I am, and this is who God is. And
- 1:58:17Speaker 38: I think that's the beauties. He connects us to a
- 1:58:19Speaker 38: world bigger than this earth, something that is eternal. And
- 1:58:24Speaker 38: I think that's why people are drawn to Rome on
- 1:58:28Speaker 38: occasions like this, because it's a glimpse of God.
- 1:58:31Speaker 24: It's a glimpse of something bigger than ourselves.
- 1:58:34Speaker 1: What are you glimpsing right now, Liz, You've been there
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: for so long decades. You've seen other conclaves, other inaugural masses.
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: You and I have worked together on the last three.
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: Does this feel the same or in twenty twenty five
- 1:58:53Speaker 1: is it destined to be different?
- 1:58:56Speaker 39: I'm feeling a different note, which I think Father very
- 1:58:59Speaker 39: much helped me to articulate. In my mind, there's something
- 1:59:03Speaker 39: a little bit less mediatic dramatic.
- 1:59:07Speaker 16: There's less of oh, that's no.
- 1:59:09Speaker 39: Oh, I've never seen that before, and much more of
- 1:59:12Speaker 39: a sense of something that almost feels like that peaceful
- 1:59:16Speaker 39: coming home to a house that is familiar. And I think,
- 1:59:19Speaker 39: right now, in a world that is so divided, as
- 1:59:23Speaker 39: Pope Leo the fourteenth mentioned and is homily, that idea
- 1:59:26Speaker 39: of being able to find that peacefulness, that comfort of
- 1:59:30Speaker 39: home is something that I'm seeing with all of these
- 1:59:33Speaker 39: people so quietly, peacefully, not that many phones in the air,
- 1:59:38Speaker 39: just living the moment instead of trying to sort of
- 1:59:42Speaker 39: be someplace, doing several places at once. And so I
- 1:59:45Speaker 39: think there's this sober the sobriety of this pope is
- 1:59:50Speaker 39: something that is a very interesting turn of events.
- 1:59:54Speaker 2: Claudie Alavagna.
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: That is a contrast when just a few hours ago
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: he was writing around in the popemobile and people were
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: catching their first glimpse of Pope Leo, and they were cheering,
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: and you could feel sense the excitement and now the
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: solemnity and the respect of this moment.
- 2:00:16Speaker 2: Tell me what you're seeing and feeling there.
- 2:00:21Speaker 40: No, you're right, Chris, I mean the Pope appears to
- 2:00:25Speaker 40: be as humble as his words. There are a few
- 2:00:28Speaker 40: passages from his homily that struck me. The first one
- 2:00:32Speaker 40: was when he said, I was chosen without any merit
- 2:00:35Speaker 40: on my own, and now with fear and trembling, I
- 2:00:39Speaker 40: begin my pontificate. And that shows you how humble this
- 2:00:42Speaker 40: Pope is and how humble he wants the church to be.
- 2:00:46Speaker 40: He also called for a church that is united, a
- 2:00:49Speaker 40: united church that also in cooperation with all the Christian churches,
- 2:00:55Speaker 40: show a sign of unity and communion, which becomes a
- 2:00:59Speaker 40: le and for a reconciled world. Also, all the parts
- 2:01:02Speaker 40: of the homedy distruct me are the ones where once
- 2:01:06Speaker 40: again he talks about peace. He's talking, He's been talking
- 2:01:10Speaker 40: about peace. He mentioned peace many times during every time
- 2:01:13Speaker 40: he spoke in the last ten days, and he said,
- 2:01:16Speaker 40: in this our time, we still see too much discord,
- 2:01:18Speaker 40: too many wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, the fear
- 2:01:22Speaker 40: of difference and an economic paradig and that exploits the
- 2:01:26Speaker 40: earth resources and marginalize the poorest. So this is a
- 2:01:29Speaker 40: pope as we expect that he is looking out to
- 2:01:31Speaker 40: the marginalized, to the poorest and also looking out for peace.
- 2:01:35Speaker 2: Chris and we returned now to the mask.
- 2:01:38Speaker 18: This particip has effect the super state dominy.
- 2:01:42Speaker 19: Come mysy, gregous.
- 2:01:59Speaker 4: You have to trust the patron ministry police together with
- 2:02:03Speaker 4: the flow and trusted to my care experience. You're saving
- 2:02:06Speaker 4: help and protection through Christ our Lord.
- 2:02:13Speaker 19: A term request that celebration.
- 2:02:15Speaker 6: At the end of the celebration to the bank Roman
- 2:02:22Speaker 6: part the looms for the parts of the world who
- 2:02:26Speaker 6: desire to take part.
- 2:02:33Speaker 19: Yes, pretty in particular.

- 2:10:09Speaker 6: We see beside the altar the image of Our Lady
- 2:10:14Speaker 6: of Good Counsel. As we mentioned earlier, this was the
- 2:10:18Speaker 6: first visit that the Pope made was to the sanctuary
- 2:10:24Speaker 6: the shrine of Our Lady of Good Counsel near Rome,
- 2:10:27Speaker 6: and they have brought this image so that this might
- 2:10:31Speaker 6: our Lady amunt of company his first or his excuse me,
- 2:10:35Speaker 6: He's auguration mass. And with that we conclude this live
- 2:10:43Speaker 6: broadcast of the Holy Mass marking the solemn inauguration of
- 2:10:48Speaker 6: the petron Ministry of His Holiness Populi or the fourteenth.
- 2:10:52Speaker 6: They visited the Vaticanese web portal or Facebook, Instagram and
- 2:10:56Speaker 6: YouTube accounts were covered with this.
- 2:10:58Speaker 1: We owe the fourteenth, who walked off one stage, a
- 2:11:01Speaker 1: physical stage constructed just for moments like these, but in
- 2:11:06Speaker 1: a very real sense walks on to the world stage
- 2:11:10Speaker 1: and a responsibility unlike any other in the world.
- 2:11:14Speaker 2: Virtually.
- 2:11:15Speaker 1: I'm known just two weeks ago now Pope Leo officially
- 2:11:18Speaker 1: with this inaugural Mass, leading the world's one point four
- 2:11:22Speaker 1: billion Catholics, with the ability to influence so many more
- 2:11:27Speaker 1: as he meets with other church leaders one by one.
- 2:11:31Speaker 1: But he was in front of two hundred and fifty
- 2:11:33Speaker 1: thousand people, world leaders for more than one hundred and
- 2:11:36Speaker 1: fifty countries.
- 2:11:39Speaker 2: He entered a square with a crowd that fervently wanted
- 2:11:43Speaker 2: to hear what this new pope had to say to
- 2:11:45Speaker 2: his flock.
- 2:11:46Speaker 1: And after this ceremony, which was filled with I guess
- 2:11:49Speaker 1: the kind of touches you would expect from centuries of tradition,
- 2:11:53Speaker 1: including the presentation of a pallium which symbolizes the pope's
- 2:11:57Speaker 1: role as a shepherd, the Fisherman's ring, a link to
- 2:11:59Speaker 1: Saint Peters, the Fisherman.
- 2:12:01Speaker 2: Apostle and first leader of the Catholic Church.
- 2:12:04Speaker 1: Leo the fourteenth delivered a homily that focused on love
- 2:12:08Speaker 1: in unity and invoked Saint Augustine, who founded, of course,
- 2:12:13Speaker 1: the order that Poplio joined almost forty three years ago.
- 2:12:16Speaker 1: He called for animating the missionary spirit, love thy neighbor.
- 2:12:20Speaker 1: He called out hatred, violence, and economic inequality.
- 2:12:27Speaker 4: In this our time, we still see too much discode,
- 2:12:31Speaker 4: too many wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, the fear
- 2:12:37Speaker 4: of difference in an economic paradigm that exploits the ets
- 2:12:42Speaker 4: resources and much analyzes the poorest for apart. We want
- 2:12:49Speaker 4: to be a small level of unity, communion, and fraternity.
- 2:12:54Speaker 2: Let's bring back our extraordinary panels.
- 2:12:57Speaker 1: Starting with NBC News International corresponding Claudio Lavanga.
- 2:13:01Speaker 2: Chris White is the Vatican.
- 2:13:02Speaker 1: Correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter and an MSNBC contributor.
- 2:13:06Speaker 1: Both are reporting live from the Vatican. Elizabeth Love, Vatican author,
- 2:13:10Speaker 1: historian and guide. Father Timothy Keoseki, President of the Jesuit Conference,
- 2:13:15Speaker 1: also joining me, Father Jim Sitchcoe of the Papal Missionary
- 2:13:19Speaker 1: of Mercy.
- 2:13:19Speaker 2: Welcome to all, Father Kasiki.
- 2:13:22Speaker 1: He used the words gratitude, fear, and trembling. When I
- 2:13:28Speaker 1: was speaking to some people at the funeral, but before
- 2:13:32Speaker 1: the conclave, one woman said to me, she marveled at
- 2:13:35Speaker 1: the idea that someone would take on a job this enormous.
- 2:13:41Speaker 2: How big is the job that Pope Leo is facing
- 2:13:44Speaker 2: right now?
- 2:13:45Speaker 38: Well, when you think that he's really what is a
- 2:13:48Speaker 38: two hundred and sixty seventh successor to Saint Peter. When
- 2:13:52Speaker 38: you're looking over two thousand years, not many people have
- 2:13:55Speaker 38: held have walked in the shoes of the fisherman.
- 2:13:59Speaker 24: As we like to say. And I know that he
- 2:14:01Speaker 24: would feel the weight of it.
- 2:14:03Speaker 38: He also knows that you know, at the heart of it,
- 2:14:07Speaker 38: you know, a pope is a priest, and he's been
- 2:14:09Speaker 38: a priest desired. That's his vocation from the start, and
- 2:14:12Speaker 38: so he knows that the priesthood that he lived out
- 2:14:16Speaker 38: in all parts of the world continues in this ministry.
- 2:14:21Speaker 24: So I'm always in awe of you know, when he put.
- 2:14:24Speaker 38: On the pallium, which is in a sense it's taken
- 2:14:26Speaker 38: from sheep's wools, so it is carrying the lost sheep
- 2:14:30Speaker 38: that I think it's both a blessing and a burden
- 2:14:33Speaker 38: to him, and I think he'll hold the two in
- 2:14:36Speaker 38: equal balance.
- 2:14:37Speaker 24: And we know he's the bridge between us and God.
- 2:14:39Speaker 38: That's Pontiff, and I think he's going to always there's
- 2:14:43Speaker 38: this great line that Saint Pope John, now Pope Saint
- 2:14:46Speaker 38: John the twenty third once said when things were heavy,
- 2:14:48Speaker 38: he would pray, it's your.
- 2:14:50Speaker 24: Church, God, I'm going to go to bed.
- 2:14:52Speaker 38: And I think he's probably going to invoke that same spirit,
- 2:14:56Speaker 38: recognizing what he can do and what he brings to God.
- 2:15:00Speaker 1: Learning curve for sure, just trying to pay yourself. There
- 2:15:03Speaker 1: are a lot of people who will be pushing at him.
- 2:15:09Speaker 1: Father sitchco. I wonder as we think about him as
- 2:15:13Speaker 1: a priest delivering a homily, And it also occurred to
- 2:15:16Speaker 1: me there are a lot of parishioners out there who
- 2:15:18Speaker 1: may be wishing that their priest was as concise and
- 2:15:21Speaker 1: as clear as his homily was. But what do you
- 2:15:24Speaker 1: think he tells us with his words today about the
- 2:15:30Speaker 1: kind of pope he wants to be.
- 2:15:33Speaker 41: Well, you know, first of all, I want to thank
- 2:15:35Speaker 41: all of you in your panel for really spreading the word,
- 2:15:38Speaker 41: for evangelizing in the beautiful way that you are. I
- 2:15:42Speaker 41: think one of the things that really strikes me as
- 2:15:45Speaker 41: this missionary tone that he shared was, you know, people
- 2:15:49Speaker 41: often ask why did Jesus go and leave the ninety
- 2:15:53Speaker 41: nine to go find the one who was lost? Well,
- 2:15:57Speaker 41: you don't realize that until you're the one who is
- 2:16:00Speaker 41: lost and Jesus comes to you. I think this pope
- 2:16:04Speaker 41: really shares with us the importance of recognizing those missionary territories.
- 2:16:11Speaker 41: We all have places that we know that need our
- 2:16:18Speaker 41: help and God's help, and through God's help we are
- 2:16:21Speaker 41: able to help them. And through his stability, he really
- 2:16:27Speaker 41: sees he really seems someone who is very stable and
- 2:16:31Speaker 41: yet very very rooted in the love and the obedience
- 2:16:36Speaker 41: as a man of Christ, and I believe that people
- 2:16:40Speaker 41: are feeling that ripple effect.
- 2:16:44Speaker 2: Historically.
- 2:16:45Speaker 1: Liz, let me ask you to put on your historians hat.
- 2:16:47Speaker 2: You have many have popes been.
- 2:16:50Speaker 24: What you see is what you get?
- 2:16:52Speaker 2: Or how much.
- 2:16:53Speaker 1: Evolution, especially in this fast changing world, might we expect
- 2:16:58Speaker 1: to see with this pope.
- 2:17:00Speaker 28: Well, I think a big party.
- 2:17:02Speaker 39: The most immediate answer to that question is the fact
- 2:17:06Speaker 39: that the pope changes his name from the very beginning
- 2:17:09Speaker 39: from from Peter, whose name is changed, he changes. And
- 2:17:14Speaker 39: so again, this Robert Prevost, who we saw over just
- 2:17:18Speaker 39: a little over a week ago, is no longer exactly
- 2:17:22Speaker 39: the same man. He comes out to us with that
- 2:17:26Speaker 39: fullness of the two hundred and sixty six successors behind him,
- 2:17:30Speaker 39: with the assistance of the one hundred and forty saints
- 2:17:34Speaker 39: that were standing in those statues around the around the
- 2:17:38Speaker 39: square and were called upon in the in the in
- 2:17:41Speaker 39: the Litany of the Saints. He is the vicar of Christ.
- 2:17:45Speaker 39: It's it's a new person that we're looking at. So
- 2:17:48Speaker 39: I think we can expect him. I think we should
- 2:17:52Speaker 39: expect him to change. There will be part of his
- 2:17:55Speaker 39: DNA that will always be present. But I think we'll
- 2:17:59Speaker 39: see him evolved, and I think that's what we're all
- 2:18:02Speaker 39: praying for, that is he takes on this immense responsibility
- 2:18:06Speaker 39: that everybody on this panel and in the world understands.
- 2:18:10Speaker 39: He will have to grow and grow in order to
- 2:18:13Speaker 39: develop shoulders strong enough to wear the weight of that
- 2:18:17Speaker 39: pallium we just saw put on them.
- 2:18:20Speaker 1: Chris, you're writing a biography on this new pope with
- 2:18:23Speaker 1: a look inside the conclave. Do you think that the
- 2:18:27Speaker 1: cardinals who elected him heard from Leo today what they
- 2:18:30Speaker 1: hoped when they made that awesome decision.
- 2:18:36Speaker 19: Of I think they did.
- 2:18:38Speaker 3: I think one of the things that was at the
- 2:18:40Speaker 3: top of their mind when they went into the conclave
- 2:18:43Speaker 3: was how do you bring together a church that is
- 2:18:45Speaker 3: so diverse and unify it? And that's what was at
- 2:18:48Speaker 3: the top of Leo's mind today. And it was really
- 2:18:51Speaker 3: interesting to hear him address an audience that included the
- 2:18:55Speaker 3: president of Israel, the president of Ukraine and say, the
- 2:19:00Speaker 3: world need unity right now, and the Church has to
- 2:19:02Speaker 3: come together and provide unity so we can set a
- 2:19:05Speaker 3: better example. And I think that weighs heavily on him.
- 2:19:08Speaker 3: We've heard him time and time again since over the
- 2:19:11Speaker 3: last ten days make appeals for peace, and I think
- 2:19:14Speaker 3: he really feels that peace begins in his own church,
- 2:19:17Speaker 3: and that's what he's trying to set.
- 2:19:19Speaker 8: Out to do.
- 2:19:20Speaker 1: And Claudio, obviously, this is a day that is in
- 2:19:23Speaker 1: many ways just beginning, although we should note it is
- 2:19:26Speaker 1: the coming up on the lunch hour, which is sacred
- 2:19:30Speaker 1: in Italian culture at least.
- 2:19:33Speaker 2: But what does the rest of the Pope's stay look like.
- 2:19:38Speaker 40: Well, I think that what was happening on the side
- 2:19:40Speaker 40: of that out to the left side of that altar,
- 2:19:43Speaker 40: Chris was just as important as the mass himself. As
- 2:19:46Speaker 40: Chris was saying the Pope at the end of the Mass,
- 2:19:49Speaker 40: he once again highlighted the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, saying
- 2:19:54Speaker 40: that children and elderly are reduced to famine, and that
- 2:19:57Speaker 40: is a message that will have resounded strongly with President
- 2:20:00Speaker 40: Herzog of Israel, who was sitting among the dignitaries and
- 2:20:04Speaker 40: the delegations there. Also, the Vaticans said that the Pope
- 2:20:09Speaker 40: before the mass met with the President of Ukraine Zelensky. Zelenski,
- 2:20:14Speaker 40: we have seen him shaking hands with Marco Rubio, the
- 2:20:17Speaker 40: Secretary of State and Vice President Jdibans before the mass,
- 2:20:22Speaker 40: we haven't seen whether they exchange a sign of peace
- 2:20:25Speaker 40: because they were a bit distant, and also Vatican TV.
- 2:20:27Speaker 19: Moved away from him.
- 2:20:28Speaker 40: But that should all these things are just as important
- 2:20:33Speaker 40: as the Mass itself, because this is a pope that
- 2:20:35Speaker 40: is going to have a major impact on the world stage,
- 2:20:39Speaker 40: not only for the one point four billion Catholics around
- 2:20:43Speaker 40: the world, but also for the rest of the world.
- 2:20:46Speaker 40: Exactly for the reasons I've just explained.
- 2:20:48Speaker 1: Because also joining us now is George Weigel, NBC News
- 2:20:52Speaker 1: senior Vatican analysts. So George, as I looked at him,
- 2:20:56Speaker 1: I thought, no pressure, right, he does have some managerial experience,
- 2:21:02Speaker 1: but I think when he was heading the Augustinian Order
- 2:21:04Speaker 1: it was what three thousand or somewhere in the low thousands.
- 2:21:08Speaker 1: You've watched popes up close and personal, notably of course
- 2:21:13Speaker 1: Saint John Paul the Second, who he wrote.
- 2:21:15Speaker 2: The incredible biography of.
- 2:21:18Speaker 1: But you've watched Benedict, you've watched Francis. Everyone handles this
- 2:21:23Speaker 1: life change differently. I think his brother understated it when
- 2:21:28Speaker 1: he said, this is a life altering moment.
- 2:21:32Speaker 2: What will you be watching for from.
- 2:21:34Speaker 1: This pope in the early days and what clues did
- 2:21:37Speaker 1: you get in the last ten days.
- 2:21:41Speaker 19: Chris good to say you.
- 2:21:43Speaker 42: I think there's been a bit too much speculation based
- 2:21:47Speaker 42: on very little evidence about where Pope Leo intends to
- 2:21:51Speaker 42: take the church and the church in its interface with
- 2:21:55Speaker 42: the world.
- 2:21:56Speaker 24: Let me just.
- 2:21:57Speaker 42: Reflect on this question of Gaza in Ukraine for a minute.
- 2:22:02Speaker 42: The pope is an Augustinian Saint. Augustine defined peace as
- 2:22:07Speaker 42: the tranquility of order, and order includes justice, which means
- 2:22:13Speaker 42: peace cannot be built on rewarding aggression, whether that is
- 2:22:19Speaker 42: Russian aggression or Hamas aggression. So it's going to be
- 2:22:23Speaker 42: a very very delicate task if the Vatican indeed is
- 2:22:28Speaker 42: able to pose itself as a mediator, because a mediator
- 2:22:33Speaker 42: who builds a true piece is going to have to
- 2:22:36Speaker 42: call that aggressor in some fashion to account. So I
- 2:22:40Speaker 42: think we need to dial down the expectations on that
- 2:22:43Speaker 42: a little bit. Secondly, I am amazed at how calm
- 2:22:49Speaker 42: this pope is now. John Paul the Second, if you will,
- 2:22:53Speaker 42: eased into the role rather quickly. He had been a
- 2:22:58Speaker 42: man of the theater. He knew how to act a role,
- 2:23:02Speaker 42: and he did it brilliantly. This man has not had
- 2:23:06Speaker 42: this kind of a large responsibility, and yet he has
- 2:23:10Speaker 42: rather seamlessly put on the office of the successor of Peter,
- 2:23:16Speaker 42: and that's a very good sign for the future. Everyone
- 2:23:21Speaker 42: I have spoken with here in Rome, who has met
- 2:23:24Speaker 42: with him since his election, says that he is a
- 2:23:28Speaker 42: terrific listener. He knows how to listen well. This was
- 2:23:32Speaker 42: another feature of the pontificate of John Paul the Second,
- 2:23:36Speaker 42: who had people around him every day breakfast, lunch, and dinner,
- 2:23:40Speaker 42: trying to learn from them what he needed to know.
- 2:23:44Speaker 42: So the fact that Pope Leo immediately impresses people as
- 2:23:49Speaker 42: a good listener is a very good sign. So I
- 2:23:54Speaker 42: think we need to wait and see how this is
- 2:23:55Speaker 42: going to unfold, but it's off to a very very
- 2:23:59Speaker 42: encourage start.
- 2:24:01Speaker 1: Something else strikes me, Father Coseque, which is that before
- 2:24:05Speaker 1: the conclave, so many analysts said to me, I think
- 2:24:09Speaker 1: the church is going to be looking for someone who's
- 2:24:11Speaker 1: not going to serve a long long time, and yet
- 2:24:14Speaker 1: here we have a sixty nine year old pope who
- 2:24:18Speaker 1: doesn't look sixty nine years old, who's very vital, who
- 2:24:21Speaker 1: plays tennis, who could very well serve six twenty years
- 2:24:27Speaker 1: and beyond. We're coming off of papacies where certainly with
- 2:24:33Speaker 1: John Paul and then obviously with Francis who when their
- 2:24:37Speaker 1: final years were ill, we're frail. That image for many people,
- 2:24:42Speaker 1: especially young people, is very different from what we're seeing
- 2:24:45Speaker 1: from this pope.
- 2:24:46Speaker 2: What opportunities might that present is I live in.
- 2:24:51Speaker 38: A community of a bunch of younger Jesuits and training,
- 2:24:53Speaker 38: and many of them have said.
- 2:24:54Speaker 24: They can never keep up.
- 2:24:55Speaker 38: They've never know I'm trying. They said they've never seen
- 2:24:58Speaker 38: a pope sixty nine years.
- 2:25:00Speaker 24: So now I had the It was. I was a
- 2:25:02Speaker 24: senior in high school when I saw.
- 2:25:04Speaker 38: Saint John Paul the Second come to Philadelphia and to
- 2:25:07Speaker 38: see a fifty nine.
- 2:25:08Speaker 24: Sixty year old pope, he was a near riot.
- 2:25:10Speaker 38: It was, it was, and I mean to see that
- 2:25:12Speaker 38: kind of youth, and we're seeing that now in Pope
- 2:25:16Speaker 38: Leo the fourteenth, and there's an enthusiasm to see that
- 2:25:20Speaker 38: youthful energy. So I think that is that is very encouraging.
- 2:25:24Speaker 38: I also think that we don't know. He may be

- 2:25:57Speaker 1: have so much to talk about with our panel coming up.
- 2:26:00Speaker 1: For the first time in history, an American president faces
- 2:26:04Speaker 1: a split screen test of his leadership with a fellow countryman,
- 2:26:08Speaker 1: the head of the Catholic Church. You're watching special coverage
- 2:26:12Speaker 1: of the inaugural Mass of Poplio the fourteenth.
