- 0:00Awake thou that sleepest. Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead,
- 0:06and Christ shall give thee light Ephesians five fourteen. In discoursing on these
- 0:12words, I shall, with the help of God, first describe the sleepers
- 0:16to whom they are spoken. Secondly enforce the exhortation Awake thou that sleepest,
- 0:22and arise from the dead. And thirdly explain the promise made to such as
- 0:27do awake and arise, Christ shall give thee light. And first as to
- 0:32the sleepers here spoken to by sleep, is signified the natural state of man,
- 0:37that deep sleep of the soul into which the sin of Adam hath cast
- 0:40all who spring from his loins, that supineness, indolence and stupidity, the
- 0:46insensibility of his real condition, wherein every man comes into the world and continues
- 0:51till the voice of God awakes him. Now they that sleep sleep in the
- 0:55night. The state of nature is a state of utter darkness, a state
- 0:58wherein darkness cover the earth and grows darkness the people. The poor, unawakened
- 1:03sinner, how much knowledge soever he may have as to other things, has
- 1:07no knowledge of himself. In this respect, he knoweth nothing. Yet is
- 1:11he ought to know. He knows not that he is a fallen spirit whose
- 1:15only business in the present world is to recover from his fall, to regain
- 1:19that image of God wherein he was created. He sees no necessity for the
- 1:23one thing needful, even that inward universal change, that birth from above,
- 1:27figured out by baptism, which is the beginning of that total renovation, that
- 1:33sanctification of spirit, soul and body, without which no man shall see.
- 1:37The loud full of all diseases as he is, he fancies himself in perfect
- 1:41health, vast bound in misery and iron. He dreams that he is at
- 1:45liberty. He says peace, peace, while the devil, as a strong
- 1:49man armed, is in full possession of his soul. He sleeps on still
- 1:53and takes his rest, though Hell is moved from beneath to meet him,
- 1:56though the pit, from whence there is no return, hath opened its mouth
- 1:59to swallow him up. A fire is killed around him, yet he knoweth
- 2:02it not. Yea it burns him, Yet he lays it not to heart.
- 2:07By one who sleeps, we are therefore to understand, in which to
- 2:10God we might all understand it. A sinner satisfied in his sins, contented
- 2:15to remain in his fallen state, to live and die without the image of
- 2:17God. One who is ignorant both of his disease and of the only remedy
- 2:22for it. One who never was warned or never regarded the warning voice of
- 2:25God to flee from the wrath to come. One that never yet saw he
- 2:30was in danger of health fire, or cried out in the earnestness of a
- 2:32soul, what must I do to be saved? If this sleeper be not
- 2:37outwardly vicious, his sleep is usually the deepest of all. Whether he be
- 2:40of the Ladacian spirit, neither cold nor hot, but a quiet, rational,
- 2:46inoffensive, good natured professor of the religion of his fathers, whether he
- 2:50be zealous and orthodox, and after the most straitest sect of our religion.
- 2:54Live a pharisee, that is, according to the scriptural account, one that
- 2:59just suffies himself, one that labors to establish his own righteousness as the ground
- 3:04of his acceptance with God. This is he who, having a form of
- 3:07guidliness, denies the power thereof Yea and probably reviles it wheresoever it is found
- 3:14is mere extravagance and delusion, Meanwhile, the wretched self deceiver, thanks God
- 3:19that he is not as other men are, adulterers, unjust extortioners. No,
- 3:23he doeth no wrong to any man. He fasts twice in a week,
- 3:28uses all the means of grace, is constant church at sacraments yea,
- 3:31and gives tithes of all he has, does all the good that he can,
- 3:35touching the righteousness of the law. He is blameless. He wants nothing
- 3:38of Godliness but the power, nothing of religion but the spirit, nothing of
- 3:43Christianity but the truth and the life. But know ye not that, however
- 3:47highly esteemed among men, such a Christian as this may be, he is
- 3:51an abomination in the sight of God, and an air of every woe which
- 3:54the Son of God, yesterday to day and forever denounces against scribes and pharisees
- 4:00hypocrites. He hath made clean the outside of the cup and the platter,
- 4:03but within is full of all filthiness, an evil disease cleaveth still unto him,
- 4:09so that his inward parts are very wickedness. Our Lord fitly compares him
- 4:13to a painted suppulcher, which appears beautiful without, but nevertheless is full of
- 4:17dead men's bones. And of all uncleanness. The bones indeed are no longer
- 4:21dry. The sinews and flesh are come upon them, and the skin covers
- 4:26them above. But there's no breath in them. Most spirit of the Living
- 4:29God. And if any man have not the spirit of Christ, he is
- 4:32none of his. Ye are Christ's, if so be that the spirit of
- 4:36God dwell on you. But if not, God knoweth that ye abide in
- 4:41death. Even until now. This is another character of the sleeper here spoken
- 4:46to He abides in death, though he knows it not. He is dead
- 4:50unto God, dead and trespasses in sins for to be carnly minded as death.
- 4:56Even as it is written by one man, sin entered into the world,
- 5:00and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, not
- 5:02only temporal death, but likewise spiritual and eternal. In that day that thou
- 5:08eidst said God to Adam, thou shalt surely die, not bodily, unless
- 5:13as he then became mortal, but spiritually thou shalt lose the life of thy
- 5:16soul. Thou shalt die to God, shalt be separated from him thy essential
- 5:20life and happiness. Thus first was dissolved the vital union of our soul with
- 5:25God, insomuch that in the midst of natural life we are Thou in spiritual
- 5:29death, and herein we remain till the second atom becomes a quickening spirit to
- 5:32us, till he raises the dead, the dead and sin in pleasure,
- 5:35riches or honors. But before any dead soul can live, he hears,
- 5:41hearkens to the voice of the Son of God, he is made sensible of
- 5:45his lost estate and receive the sentence of death, and himself he knows himself
- 5:49to be dead, while he liveth dead to God and all the things of
- 5:51God, having no more power to perform the actions of a living Christian than
- 5:56a dead body to perform the functions of a living man. And most certain
- 6:00it is that one dead in sin has not senses exercise to discern spiritual good
- 6:04and evil. Having eyes, he sees not, he hath ears, and
- 6:08hears not. He doth not taste and see that the Lord is gracious.
- 6:11He hath not seen God at any time, or heard his voice, or
- 6:15handled the word of life. In vain is the name of Jesus, like
- 6:17white men poured forth, and all his garments smell of myrrh aloes. And
- 6:20Cassia. The soul that sleepeth and death hath no perception of any objects of
- 6:26this kind. His heart is past feeling, and understandeth none of these things,
- 6:30and hence, having no spiritual senses, no inlets of spiritual knowledge,
- 6:33the natural man receiveth not the things of the spirit of God. Nay,
- 6:38he is so far from receiving them, that whosoever is spiritually discerned is mere
- 6:42foolishness. Unto him is not content with being utterly ignorant of spiritual things,
- 6:46but he denies the very existence of them, And spiritual sensation itself is to
- 6:49him the foolishness of folly. How saith he can these things be? How
- 6:54can any man know that he is alive? To God? Even as you
- 6:57know that your body is now alive, is the life of the soul?
- 7:00If ye have this life abiding in you, ye want no marks to evidence
- 7:03it to yourself. But electos Numatos, that divine consciousness, that witness of
- 7:12God, which is more and greater than ten thousand human witnesses. If he
- 7:15doth not now bear witness with thy spirit that thou art a child of God,
- 7:19oh that he might convince thee thou poor and awakened sinner by his demonstration
- 7:24and power, that thou art a child of the devil. Oh that I
- 7:28prophesy there might now be a noise in a shaking, and made the bones
- 7:31come together bone to his bone. Then come from the four winds, O
- 7:34breath and breathe on thee slain, that they may live, and do not
- 7:39ye Harden your hearts and resist the Holy ghost whom ye've been. Thou hast
- 7:43come to convince you of sin because you believe not on the name of the
- 7:46only begotten Son of God. Wherefore awake thou that sleepest, and arise from
- 7:50the dead. God calleth thee now by my mouth and bids thee know thyself,
- 7:55thou fallen spirit, thy true state, and only concern below what meanest
- 8:00thou, O sleeper, arise, Call upon thy God. If so be
- 8:03thy God will think upon thee, that thou perish not. The mighty tempest
- 8:07is stirred up around thee, and thou art sinking into the depths of perdition,
- 8:11the gulf of God's judgments. If thou wouldst escaped them, cast thyself
- 8:16into them. Judge thyself, and thou shalt not be judged of the Lord.
- 8:20Awake, awake, stand up this moment, lest thou drink at the
- 8:24Lord's hand the cup of his fury. Stir up thyself to lay hold on
- 8:26the Lord, the Lord, thy righteousness mighty, to save, shake thyself
- 8:31from the dust. At least, let the earthquake of God's threatenings shake thee
- 8:35awake and cry out with the trembling jailer, what must I do to be
- 8:39saved? And never rest till thou believest on the Lord Jesus with the faith
- 8:43which is his gift by the operation of His spirit. If I speak to
- 8:46any of you more than to another, it is to THEE who thinkest thyself
- 8:50unconcerned. In this exhortation, I have a message from God unto thee.
- 8:56In his name. I warn thee to flee from the wrath. To come,
- 8:58Thou, unholy soul, see thy picture and condemn Peter lying in the
- 9:03dark dungeon, between the soldiers, bound with two chains, the keepers before
- 9:07the door, keeping the prison. The night is far spent, the morning
- 9:11is at hand when thou art to be brought forth to execution. And in
- 9:15these dreadful circumstances the art fast asleep, the art, fast asleep in the
- 9:20devil's arms, on the brink of the pit, in the jaws of everlasting
- 9:22destruction. Oh, may the Angel of the Lord come upon thee and the
- 9:26light shine into thy prison. And mayst thou feel the stroke of an almighty
- 9:31hand raising thee with a rise up. Quickly, gird thyself and bind on
- 9:35thy sandals. Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. Awake thou
- 9:41everlasting spirit, out of thy dream of worldly happiness? Did not God create
- 9:46THEE for himself? Then thou canst not rest till thou restest in him.
- 9:50Return, Thou wanderer, fly back to thy ark. This is not thy
- 9:54home. Think not of building tabernacles here Thou art but a stranger, is
- 9:58sojourn or upon earth, a creature of a day, but ist launching out
- 10:03into an unchangeable state. Make haste. Eternity is at hand. Eternity depends
- 10:07on this moment, an eternity of happiness or an eternity of misery? In
- 10:13what state is thy soul? Was God? Why aing yet speaking to require
- 10:16it of thee? Art Thou ready to meet death in judgment? Canst thou
- 10:20stand in His sight? Who is of purer eyes than to behold iniquity.
- 10:24Art thou meet to be partaker of the inheritance of the saints and light.
- 10:28Hast thou fought a good fight and kept the faith. Hast thou secured the
- 10:31one thing needful. Hast thou recovered the image of God, even righteousness and
- 10:35true holiness. As thou put off the old man and put on the new,
- 10:41art thou clothed upon with Christ. Hast thou oil in thy lamp grace
- 10:45in thy heart. Dost thou love the Lord, thy God with all thy
- 10:48heart, with all thy mind, with all thy soul, and with all
- 10:50thy strength. Is that mind in Thee which was also in Christ Jesus.
- 10:56Art thou a Christian? Indeed, that is a new creature. Old things
- 11:00passed away, and all things become new. Art thou a partaker of the
- 11:03divine nature. Knowest thou not that Christ is in Thee, except thou be
- 11:09reprobate. Knowest thou that God dwelleth in THEE, and thou in God,
- 11:13by His Spirit, which He hath given Thee. Knowest thou not that thy
- 11:16body is a temple of the Holy Ghost, which thou hast of God,
- 11:20hast all the witness in thyself, the earnestness of thine inheritance. Hast thou
- 11:24received the Holy Spirit? Or hast thou started the question not knowing whether there
- 11:30be any Holy Ghost? If it offends thee be thou assured that thou art
- 11:35neither a Christian nor desirest to be one. Nay, thy very prayers turned
- 11:39into sin, and thou hast solemnly mocked God this very day by praying for
- 11:45the inspiration of his Holy Spirit, when thou didst not believe that there was
- 11:48any such thing to be received. Yet, on the authority of God's word
- 11:52in our own church, I must repeat the question, hast thou received the
- 11:56Holy Ghost? If thou hast not thou art not yet a Christian? For
- 12:01a Christian is a man that is anointed with the Holy Ghost and with power.
- 12:03Thou art not yet made up artaker of pure religion and undefiled. Dost
- 12:07thou know what religion is? Use it as a participation of the divine nature,
- 12:11the life of God and the soul of man Christ formed in the heart
- 12:16Christ. In thee the hope of glory, happiness and holiness heaven begun upon
- 12:20earth, a Kingdom of God within thee, not meat and drink, no
- 12:24outward thing, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost and everlasting
- 12:30Kingdom, brought into thy soul, a peace of God that passeth all understanding,
- 12:33a joy unspeakable and full of glory. Knowest thou that in Jesus Christ,
- 12:39neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but faith that worketh by love,
- 12:46but a new creation. Seest thou the necessity of that inward change,
- 12:50that spiritual birth, that life from the dead, that holiness, and art
- 12:54thou thoroughly convinced that without it no man shall see the Lord. Art thou
- 12:58laboring after it, give all diligence to make thy calling and election sure,
- 13:01working out thy salvation with fear and trembling, agonizing to enter in at the
- 13:05strait gate. Art thou in earnest about thy soul? And canst thou tell
- 13:11the surture of hearts? Thou, O God, art the thing thy long
- 13:13for Lord? Thou knowest all things. Thou knowest that I would love thee
- 13:18Thou hopest to be saved. But what reason hast thou to give of the
- 13:22hope that is in THEE. Is it because thou hast done no harm,
- 13:24or because thou hast done much good? Or because thou art not like other
- 13:30men, but wise or learned, or honest and morally good, esteemed of
- 13:35men, and of a fair reputation. Alas all this will never bring THEE
- 13:37to God. It is in his account lighter than vanity. Dost thou know
- 13:41Jesus Christ, whom he hath sent. Hath He taught THEE that by grace
- 13:46we are saved through faith, and that not of ourselves. It is the
- 13:48gift of God, not of works. Lest any man should boast. Hast
- 13:52thou received the faithful, saying as the whole foundation of thy hope? That
- 13:56Jesus Christ came into the world to save Sinnersest thou learned what that meaneth I
- 14:01came not to call the righteous, but to sinners to repentance. I am
- 14:05not sent but unto the lost sheep. Art thou he that heareth Let him
- 14:09understand lost dead damned? Already? Dost thou know thy deserts, Dost thou
- 14:15feel thy wants? Art Thou poor in spirit? Mourning for God and refusing
- 14:18to be comforted is the prodigal come to himself and will content to be therefore
- 14:24thought beside himself by those who are still feeding upon the husks which he hath
- 14:28left. Art thou willing to live godly in Christ Jesus, And dost thou
- 14:31therefore suffer persecution? Do men say all manner of evil against thee falsely for
- 14:35the son of man's sake? Oh, then are all these questions? Ye
- 14:39may hear the voice that wakes the dead, and feel that hammer of the
- 14:43Word which breaketh the rocks and pieces. If ye will hear his voice to
- 14:46day at is called today hard not your hearts now awake Thou that sleepest in
- 14:52spiritual death, Thou sleep not in death eternal, Feel thy lost estate,
- 14:56and arise from the dead. Leave thine old companions and sin and death follow
- 15:01thou Jesus, and let the dead bury their dead. Save thyself from this
- 15:05untoward generation. Come out from among them, and be thou separate, and
- 15:09touch not the unclean thing, And the Lord shall receive thee. Christ shall
- 15:13give thee light. This promise I come lastly to explain. And how encouraging
- 15:18a consideration is this, that whosoever thou art, who obeyest his call,
- 15:22thou canst not seek his face in vain. If thou even now awakest and
- 15:26arisest from the dead, he hath bound himself to give thee light. The
- 15:31Lord shall give thee grace and glory, the light of his grace here and
- 15:33the light of his glory. When thou receivest the crown that fadeth not away,
- 15:39thy light shall break forth as the morning, and thy darkness be as
- 15:41the noonday. God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness,
- 15:45shall shine in thy heart to give the knowledge of the glory of God.
- 15:48In the face of Jesus Christ. On them that fear the Lord, shall
- 15:52the Son of righteousness or rise with healing in his wings. And in that
- 15:56day, it shall be said, unto thee arise shine, for thy light
- 15:58is, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon Thee. For Christ
- 16:03shall reveal himself in THEE. And he is the true Light. God is
- 16:07Light, and will give himself to every awakened sinner that waiteth for him.
- 16:11And thou shalt then be a temple of the Living God. And Christ shall
- 16:15dwell in thy heart by faith and being rooted and grounded in love, thou
- 16:18shalt be able to comprehend with all saints. What is the breath and length,
- 16:23and depth and height of the love of Christ which passeth knowledge. You
- 16:27see your calling, brethren. We are called to be an inhabitation of God
- 16:32through his spirit, and through his spirit, dwelling in us to be saints
- 16:36here and partakers of the inheritance of the saints and light. So exceeding greater
- 16:40are the promises which are given unto us, actually given unto us who believe.
- 16:45For by faith we receive not the spirit of the world, but the
- 16:48spirit which of God, the sum of all the promises, that we may
- 16:52know the things that are freely given to us of God. The Spirit of
- 16:56Christ is that great gift of God, which, at sundry time and in
- 17:00divers manners he hath promised to man and hath fully bestowed. Since the time
- 17:03that Christ was glorified, those promises before made to the fathers he hath thus
- 17:08fulfilled. I will put my spirit within you and cause you to walk in
- 17:12my statutes. Ezek you thirty six twenty seven. I will pour water upon
- 17:18him that is thirsty and floods upon the dry ground. I will pour my
- 17:21spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon Thine offspring Isaiah forty four.
- 17:26Three. Ye may all be living witnesses of these things, a remission of
- 17:30sins in the gift of the Holy Ghost. If thou canst believe, all
- 17:34things are possible to him that believeth Who among you is there that feareth the
- 17:37Lord, and yet walketh on in darkness and hath no light. I ask
- 17:42THEE in the name of Jesus, believest thou that his arm is not shortened
- 17:45at all, that he has stole mighty to save, that He is the
- 17:48same yesterday to day and forever, that he hath now power on earth to
- 17:53forgive sins. Son, be of good cheer. Thy sins are forgiven God
- 17:59for Christ's sake hath forgiven. THEE receive this not as the word of man,
- 18:03but as it is indeed the word of God. And thou art justified
- 18:07freely through faith. Thou shalt be sanctified also through faith which is in Jesus.
- 18:11And thou shalt set to thy seal even thine that God hath given unto
- 18:15us eternal life in this life is in His son. Men and brethren,
- 18:21let me freely speak to you, and suffer ye the word of exhortation,
- 18:23even from one the least esteemed in the Church. Your conscience beareth you witness
- 18:29in the Holy Ghost that these things are so. If so be, ye
- 18:32hath tasted that the Lord is gracious. This is eternal life. To know
- 18:34the only true God, in Jesus Christ, whom he hath sent. This
- 18:38experimental knowledge, in this alone is true Christianity. He is a Christian who
- 18:42hath received the Spirit of Christ. He is not a Christian who hath not
- 18:47received him. Neither is it possible to have received him and know it not.
- 18:51For that day when he cometh, saith, our Lord, ye shall
- 18:55know that I am in my Father and you and me, and I in
- 18:57you. This is that spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because
- 19:02it seeth him not neither knoweth him. But ye know him, for he
- 19:06dwelleth with you and shall be in you John fourteen seventeen. The world cannot
- 19:11receive him but utterly reject the promise of the Father, contradicting and blaspheming.
- 19:17But every spirit which confesseth not this is not of God. Yea, this
- 19:21is the spirit of Antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come into
- 19:23the world, even now it is in the world. He is Antichrist who
- 19:27serve denies the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, or that the dwelling Spirit of
- 19:32God is the common privilege of all believers, the blessing of the Gospel,
- 19:36the unspeakable gift, the universal promise, the criterion of a real Christian.
- 19:41If nothing helps them to say, we do not deny the assistance of God's
- 19:44Spirit, but only this inspiration, this receiving the Holy Ghost and being sensible
- 19:48of it. Is only this feeling of the Spirit, this being moved by
- 19:52the Spirit or filled with it, which we deny to have any place in
- 19:56sound religion. But in only denying this, you deny the whole script,
- 20:00the whole truth and promise and testimony of God. Our own excellent Church knows
- 20:04nothing of this devilish distinction, but speaks plainly of feeling the Spirit of Christ,
- 20:10of being moved by the Holy ghosts. In knowing and feeling, there
- 20:14is no other name than that of Jesus, whereby we can receive life and
- 20:18salvation. She teaches us all to pray for the inspiration of the Holy Spirit,
- 20:22yea, that we may be filled with the Holy Ghost. Nay,
- 20:26and every presbyter of hers professes to receive the Holy Ghost by the imposition of
- 20:30hands. And therefore to deny any of these is in effect to renounce the
- 20:36Church of England, as well as the whole Christian revelation. But the wisdom
- 20:40of God was always foolishness with the men no marvel. Then that the great
- 20:42mystery of the Gospel should be now also hid from the wise and prudent,
- 20:47as well as in the days of old, there should be almost universally denied,
- 20:51ridiculed, and exploded is mere frenzy. And that all who dare avow
- 20:56it still are branded with the names of madmen and enthusiasts. That is that
- 21:00falling away which was to come, that general apostasy of all orders and degrees
- 21:04of men, which we even now find to have overspread the earth. Run
- 21:07to and fro in the streets of Jerusalem, and see if you can find
- 21:11a man, a man that loveth the Lord is God with all his heart,
- 21:14and serveth him with all his strength. How does our own land mourn
- 21:18that we look no farther under the overflowings of ungodliness the villanies of every kind
- 21:22are committed day by day, yea too often with impunity by those who sin
- 21:27with a high hand and glory in their shame. Who can reckon up the
- 21:30oaths, curses, profaneness, blasphemies, the lying slandering, evil speaking,
- 21:36the sabbath breaking, gluttony, drunkenness, revenge, the hortems, adult trees,
- 21:41and various uncleanness, the frauds injustice, oppression, exhortation, which overspread
- 21:45our land is a flood. And even among those who have kept themselves pure
- 21:49from those grosser abominations, how much anger and pride, how much sloth and
- 21:53idleness, how much softness and efhemasy, how much luxury and self indulgence,
- 21:59how much covetousness and ambition, how much thirst of praise? How much love
- 22:03of the world, How much fear of man is to be found? Meanwhile,
- 22:06how little of true religion? For where is he that loveth either God
- 22:11or his neighbor, as he hath given us commandment? On the one hand,
- 22:15are those who have not so much as the form of godliness? On
- 22:18the other, those who have the form only there stands open. They are
- 22:22the painted supprochler so that in very deed, whosoever were earnestly to behold in
- 22:26the public gathering together of the people, I fear those in our churches are
- 22:30not to be accepted, might easily perceive the one part were Saducees and the
- 22:34other Pharisees, one having almost as little concern about religion as if there were
- 22:40no resurrection, either angel nor spirit, and the other making it as a
- 22:44mere lifeless form, a dull round of external performances, without either true faith
- 22:48or the love of God or joy in the Holy Ghost. Would to God,
- 22:52I could accept us of this place. Brethren, my heart's desire and
- 22:56prayer to God for you is that ye may be saved from this overflowing of
- 23:00ungodliness, that here may its proud waves be stayed. But is it so?
- 23:04Indeed, God knoweth yea and our own consciences. It is not ye
- 23:10have not kept yourselves pure? Corrupt are we also and abominable? And few
- 23:15are there that understand any more, few that worship God in spirit and in
- 23:18truth. We too are a generation that set not our hearts aright, and
- 23:22whose spirit leaveth not steadfastly. Unto God, y hath appointed us, indeed
- 23:26to be the salt of the earth. But if the salt hath lost its
- 23:30savor, is thenceforth good for nothing but to be cast out and to be
- 23:33trodden under foot of men. And shall I not visit for these things,
- 23:37saith the Lord, shall not my soul be avenged in such a nation as
- 23:41this. Yea, we know not how soon he may say to the sword,
- 23:45sword, go through this land. Yeth given us long space to repent,
- 23:48he lets us alone this year also, But he warns and awakens us
- 23:52by thunder. His judgments are abroad in the earth, And we have all
- 23:55reason to expect, the heaviest of all, even that he should come unto
- 23:59us quickly and remove our candlestick out of its place, except we repent and
- 24:03do his works first, lest we return to the principles of the Reformation,
- 24:07the truth and simplicity of the Gospel. Perhaps we are now resisting the last
- 24:10effort of divine grace to save us. Perhaps we have well nigh filled up
- 24:14the measure of our iniquities by rejecting the counsel of God against ourselves and casting
- 24:18out His messengers. O God, in the midst of wrath, Remember mercy
- 24:22be glorified in our reformation, not in our destruction. Let us hear the
- 24:26rod and him that appointed it. Now that Thy judgments are abroad in the
- 24:30earth, let the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness. My brethren, it
- 24:33is high time for us to awake out of the sleep, before the great
- 24:37trumpet of the Lord be blown and our land become a field of blood.
- 24:41What may we speedily see the things that make for our peace before they are
- 24:44hid from our eyes. Turn thou us, O good Lord, Let thine
- 24:48anger cease from us. O Lord, look down from heaven, behold and
- 24:52visit this vine, and cause us to know the time of our visitation.
- 24:56Help us, O, God of our salvation, for the glory of thy
- 24:59name. Oh, deliver us, and be merciful to our sins for thy
- 25:03name's sake, And so we will not go back from thee Oh, let
- 25:06us live, and we shall call upon thy name. Turn us again,
- 25:08O, Lord, God of Hosts, show the light of thy countenance.
- 25:11We shall behole now unto him that is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all
- 25:17that we can ask or think, according to the power that workethin us.
- 25:19Unto him be glory in the Church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world
- 25:25without end amen. End of Section three,
