- 0:00As one begins the actual practice of yoga, one becomes
- 0:04aware of the various forms of difficulties in gaining the
- 0:08cooperation of and control over the various parts of our
- 0:13internal being. The mind races.
- 0:16When we try to sit for meditation, we become aware of
- 0:19desires and compulsions that formerly were hidden to our
- 0:23view. The physical body presents its
- 0:27difficulties and limitations. We are faced with a complex and
- 0:31interdependent web of powers and parts of the being which are not
- 0:36at all in harmony with the central aspiration that is
- 0:40driving the practice. It is relatively hard, if not
- 0:44virtually impossible, to work through this confusion and
- 0:48complexity without assistance. In response to numerous specific
- 0:53questions raised by his disciples, Shrioro Bindo wrote
- 0:57thousands of letters clarifying, analyzing and guiding, and in
- 1:03other ways helping practitioners of the yoga to find their
- 1:06direction through this mass of difficulty.
- 1:10The Basis of Yoga represents a compilation from those letters,
- 1:14organized so as to provide a practical handbook for the
- 1:18beginning aspirant just starting on the path of yoga, as well as
- 1:23to the more experienced who are beginning to grapple with issues
- 1:27that were not evident at the start of the process.
- 1:31Even individuals long engage with the yogic practice find
- 1:35value in coming back to core principles and issues from time
- 1:40to time. This book has been a valued
- 1:43companion to many thousands of disciples over the years.
- 1:48It is intended for anyone who aspires to undertake the process
- 1:52of gaining mastery over their minds, emotions, vital energies
- 1:57and bodies in the discipline of yoga.
- 2:02Added insights and commentary are provided to put the
- 2:05comments, initially directed in response to a specific disciple
- 2:10with a specific set of concerns, into some kind of context for
- 2:15the lives we lead today in our modern society.
- 2:19They are intended to engage and hopefully address concerns that
- 2:24aid the seeker in associating Sri Aurobindo's responses in a
- 2:28meaningful way in their own lives, circumstances and inner
- 2:32growth. Needs reference.
