- 1:17Speaker 3: on a couple of fun topics. Dropped the little Zach
- 1:20Speaker 3: Arnett audio that we're gonna hit again right here. Mike
- 1:26Speaker 3: Ntilier was great on LSU hosting Game Day. Imagine that
- 1:34Speaker 3: Lane Kiffin's first game. They're playing Clemson. Clemson was a
- 1:40Speaker 3: disaster last year. They're playing Clemson.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Debo.
- 1:47Speaker 3: We'll see, we'll see if he can get the mojo
- 1:50Speaker 3: going again. But LSU will host Clemson and Game Day
- 1:58Speaker 3: and you know Lane will eat it up.
- 2:02Speaker 4: You know that.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Now, how long is he going to stay off social media?
- 2:08Speaker 3: He says, his son Knox is the reason why. If
- 2:11Speaker 3: you believe that or not, that he challenged him to
- 2:14Speaker 3: get off social media. Now, Laide still he did huge
- 2:18Speaker 3: shows in the summer, so it didn't I mean, the
- 2:20Speaker 3: Vandy Fair piece got people crazy pills. But Big Cat
- 2:25Speaker 3: interview with Barstool, Honey Badger and then all the media days.
- 2:31Speaker 3: I mean, come on, you still got you know, a
- 2:36Speaker 3: ton of lath and it doesn't matter where you go.
- 2:38Speaker 3: I mean last week he was at the Rotary Club.
- 2:42Speaker 3: You'd have thought the Rolling Stones and the Beatles rolled in.
- 2:47Speaker 3: So he's he's embracing the deal. A couple of different
- 2:51Speaker 3: ways that you can get in touch with us. The
- 2:53Speaker 3: Dancing Rabbit Golf text line six oh one eight eight
- 2:58Speaker 3: five three seven seven find us on X at bo Bounds.
- 3:03Speaker 3: One of my favorite beers is Key City Mississippi Queen.
- 3:08Speaker 3: That's the caller line out of Vicksburg. The caller line's
- 3:10Speaker 3: actually here, Key City, Mississippi Queen and Key City Beer
- 3:14Speaker 3: is out of Vicksburg. They have a restaurant and bar,
- 3:16Speaker 3: but they're in Fleetway markets and grocery stores and restaurants
- 3:22Speaker 3: and bars all over the caller line six oh one
- 3:25Speaker 3: seven zero seven thirty seven fifty. This is Zach Barnett.
- 3:30Speaker 3: He's the Mississippi State defensive coordinator again and he's been
- 3:35Speaker 3: the DC for three years, the interim for one, then
- 3:38Speaker 3: he worked for Golding for a year, worked for Dan
- 3:43Speaker 3: Mullen for a few months, and then he worked for
- 3:45Speaker 3: Florida State. This is Zach Barnett on what it's like
- 3:48Speaker 3: to be back in Starbull if.
- 3:50Speaker 5: That makes sense for you to return in the city
- 3:51Speaker 5: state Oliers. I. I like coaching defense right in. This
- 3:56Speaker 5: place has a long history of really good defense. I
- 4:01Speaker 5: was very privileged, fortunate, honored last time here. Had a
- 4:05Speaker 5: lot of really good players. You know, quite a few
- 4:07Speaker 5: of them are playing on Sundays. So just have a
- 4:13Speaker 5: fun place in my heart for this institution. And it's
- 4:16Speaker 5: a great place to coach defense at. And if you
- 4:18Speaker 5: like coaching defense, you jump at that opportunity.
- 4:21Speaker 4: All right.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Well, first of all, he is really locked in, really
- 4:29Speaker 3: intense and has a chip on his shoulder. He's ready
- 4:31Speaker 3: to get back to another level. He also got to
- 4:34Speaker 3: sign a three year, one million dollar a year deal
- 4:38Speaker 3: to come back, so when they asked some of its compensation,
- 4:41Speaker 3: he wanted to be a DC. And you know, once
- 4:46Speaker 3: Levy fired Coleman Hutzler and DJ Darkins said no, you know,
- 4:50Speaker 3: there may have been a couple other conversations, but Zach
- 4:53Speaker 3: Barnett was ready to roll. And so Jeff Levy replaced
- 4:57Speaker 3: Zach Garnett as head coach Atssissippi State. Then Levy hired
- 5:04Speaker 3: Coleman Hutzler as DC. They went seven and eighteen one
- 5:08Speaker 3: in fifteen in conference played the last two years, which
- 5:12Speaker 3: Jackson and I could have done better. And now Zach
- 5:16Speaker 3: Arnett is back in start Bull for year.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Five.
- 5:22Speaker 3: But he's the DC again and he's a pretty damn
- 5:24Speaker 3: good DC. I mean major major, major, major major upgrade
- 5:28Speaker 3: above Hutsler because Arnett's legit.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Has proven that he can he can do this thing.
- 5:34Speaker 3: He can roll it out on Saturday and have a
- 5:37Speaker 3: really good day, and he proved that multiple times, which
- 5:39Speaker 3: is good.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Again, what will that look like this year? We'll see.
- 5:44Speaker 3: You want him to get after Minnesota so that Levy
- 5:47Speaker 3: can get a win on the road against the power
- 5:49Speaker 3: four team and get going. That's a big deal. You'll
- 5:53Speaker 3: have better athletes than Minnesota. The question is can you
- 5:57Speaker 3: execute and make it and make it? Camorrio will be
- 6:00Speaker 3: bigger than sixty seventy percent of their team. Not that
- 6:04Speaker 3: they don't have some like corn fed Midwestern dudes in
- 6:08Speaker 3: the line of scrimmage. Okay, big ten, I mean they
- 6:11Speaker 3: got some girth. Okay, but you know what I mean.
- 6:15Speaker 3: I mean, Camorrio's six foot four, two thirty and he's
- 6:19Speaker 3: a big man. So, uh, Jet Johnson is back on
- 6:24Speaker 3: the staff. He was a damn good linebacker out of
- 6:26Speaker 3: Tupelo for Mississippi State and looks like he's gonna state.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I mean, this is a great opportunity for him. He
- 6:32Speaker 3: was at Yukon with Matt Brock and now he gets
- 6:35Speaker 3: to come back. That's kind of the trio, you know.
- 6:41Speaker 3: And then you throw in Errol Thompson who played under Mullen.
- 6:44Speaker 3: He was a good linebacker from Alabama. He was kind
- 6:47Speaker 3: of an old style thumper, but good and I say
- 6:53Speaker 3: old school, yeah, old school thumper, but good player. So
- 6:58Speaker 3: those are some of the assistance I can promise you
- 7:01Speaker 3: that Zach Garnett and Matt Brock I can promise you
- 7:08Speaker 3: they're the first in the building in the last to leave.
- 7:11Speaker 4: So and he wants, he wants.
- 7:16Speaker 3: An opportunity to to I would think. I think his
- 7:21Speaker 3: past now is probably going to be if he can
- 7:25Speaker 3: be successful Atssissippi State grab an even better DC job before.
- 7:31Speaker 4: G six head coach.
- 7:33Speaker 3: But he's got to, you know, he's got to perform
- 7:35Speaker 3: and produce and roll out some good defenses. They don't
- 7:38Speaker 3: have to be top twenty, but man, if he could
- 7:40Speaker 3: put y'all in the top sixty or top fifty compared
- 7:43Speaker 3: to being at one hundred and eleventh under Hustler, that
- 7:47Speaker 3: alone could be a win. It may be too, because
- 7:50Speaker 3: if you can bleed the clock, you know, if you
- 7:55Speaker 3: get the combination going of running the football and stopping
- 7:59Speaker 3: the run, you make it squeeze enough wins to extend.
- 8:04Speaker 4: Levy's coaching career, right, say it like it's a good thing.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Well, I don't necessarily know, you know, I think you're
- 8:15Speaker 3: real limited here on what he's going to be. Even
- 8:17Speaker 3: if it is, even if it works, right, I think
- 8:21Speaker 3: you're real, real limited. Maybe some things start to change,
- 8:24Speaker 3: Maybe he can develop into an SEC head coach, I
- 8:29Speaker 3: mean a bona fide legitimate SEC head coach, because if not,
- 8:33Speaker 3: you're just delayed. Well you're spinning your wheels. I mean,
- 8:37Speaker 3: you need something to go here, and they would love
- 8:43Speaker 3: for Arnett to be that guy to get this defense
- 8:48Speaker 3: even in the top sixty is a major forty forty
- 8:52Speaker 3: spot plus swing for the defense, which is which would
- 8:56Speaker 3: be remarkable and and uh and can definitely happen.
- 9:01Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, so I cannot. There's so many stories.
- 9:07Speaker 3: I mean, Arnette coach under Pete Golding, who's now the
- 9:11Speaker 3: head coach at Ole miss' It's just this, this stuff's
- 9:16Speaker 3: wild how this all plays out. But Zach Arnett's back
- 9:20Speaker 3: in Starbuars. Did y'all have that on your bingo card?
- 9:25Speaker 3: When he got fired as the interim coach at Mississippi State,
- 9:30Speaker 3: I mean, he wasn't given a chance to be successful, Okay,
- 9:33Speaker 3: and people get bagged down with like who the OC
- 9:36Speaker 3: was hired. It wouldn't have mattered. Only only Leech was
- 9:39Speaker 3: winning with that quarterback. We are the out of Bound show.
- 9:44Speaker 3: We're driven by your next GMC Sierra Truck, GMC Yukon Fowler,
- 9:48Speaker 3: Fouler Fowler, GMC.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Pearl Brandon, Jackson Meadows.
- 10:07Speaker 2: The way they break you and then binge you obit
- 10:14Speaker 2: and spank you butt.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Out of bounds.
- 10:16Speaker 2: ESPN.
- 10:17Speaker 3: One oh five Down to the Zone, brought to you
- 10:20Speaker 3: by the Rogue Men's Store. Guys, I know you want
- 10:23Speaker 3: to look sharp on game day, and the Rogue has
- 10:28Speaker 3: you covered head in. Check out there. Peter Malar collection
- 10:33Speaker 3: at the Rogue Men's Store, officially licensed Ole, miss and
- 10:37Speaker 3: Mississippi State. Here that actually looks like something you'd want
- 10:41Speaker 3: to wear off campus. Do you need a coat, a
- 10:48Speaker 3: sport coat for your next road trip, engagement party or
- 10:52Speaker 3: the boardroom? Jack Victor sport Coats at the Rogue Men's Store.
- 10:58Speaker 3: And then you know the drill Martin Dingman Shoes, hottest
- 11:02Speaker 3: shoe in the country. It's got that athletic you know
- 11:05Speaker 3: you can dress it up dressed down. Y'all know it's
- 11:09Speaker 3: got the lifestyle athletic angle. Martin Dingman Shoes at the
- 11:13Speaker 3: Roguemen's Store newly renovated in Jackson, right by Highland Village.
- 11:18Speaker 3: The Rogueman's Store. Peter Malar, Old miss Rebels Peter Malar Mississippi.
- 11:23Speaker 4: State Bulldogs and it looks good.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Powered by the Rogue men's store, and Jackson followed them
- 11:29Speaker 3: on Instagram and Facebook. They're super active and they're throwing
- 11:32Speaker 3: up all kinds of posting all kinds of stuff there.
- 11:37Speaker 3: We bounced around this morning, but got Mike d locked
- 11:40Speaker 3: into LSU and Lane Clemson just a few weeks away.
- 11:45Speaker 4: That's one of the bigger games.
- 11:46Speaker 3: No, yeah, the biggest game of the weekend, just because
- 11:51Speaker 3: of Lane and how successful and crazy he is. Successful
- 11:56Speaker 3: what he did at Old Miss and Florida Atlantic, turning
- 11:58Speaker 3: his coaching career around, and then now at this big
- 12:03Speaker 3: brand that people follow regardless of what they're doing, and
- 12:07Speaker 3: that ed o'seron and less Miles can win a national championship.
- 12:10Speaker 3: I mean, that's incredible when you said that out loud,
- 12:15Speaker 3: That's that's what a monster in a power LSU is.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Less Miles and Eddio won national titles at LSU. What's
- 12:25Speaker 3: the only other program in the country that's done that
- 12:28Speaker 3: in the two thousands? Ohio State with Jim trus Jim
- 12:32Speaker 3: Trussel is actually a hell of a coach, Urban Myers
- 12:35Speaker 3: a great coach, and Ryan Day looks to be a
- 12:37Speaker 3: pretty damn good coach. And Ohio State did it with
- 12:41Speaker 3: three different dudes. LSU did it with saving Miles and
- 12:44Speaker 3: Eddieoh Savings the goat Miles Mah Eddio mah. But that's
- 12:50Speaker 3: that's what a monster that thing is. And you know,
- 12:55Speaker 3: talent accumulation and so on.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Uh.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Jackson and I were talking yesterday. I thought this was interesting.
- 13:01Speaker 3: We talk about coaches who make it and coaches who don't.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Brian Kelly won everywhere Division two in the MAC at
- 13:10Speaker 3: Notre Dame, he did win. He was a good coach,
- 13:15Speaker 3: and yet he couldn't get it going at LSU. And
- 13:17Speaker 3: then we've had guys who didn't have that kind of
- 13:19Speaker 3: track record, for example, the coach in this state like
- 13:22Speaker 3: Eddie O and Sylvester Krume who just weren't head coaches,
- 13:25Speaker 3: Joe moorehead Matt Luke. It just some It doesn't mean
- 13:28Speaker 3: that they're not good at something in football coaching, but
- 13:32Speaker 3: being the head coach like Dan Mullen and Lane Kiffin understood,
- 13:35Speaker 3: and Tommy Tumberville and Jackie Cheryl, it's just a different deal.
- 13:40Speaker 3: We don't know if Pete Golding and we definitely don't
- 13:42Speaker 3: know what Jeff Levy, We're on wait and see. We're
- 13:45Speaker 3: going to see what plays out. Can they level up
- 13:48Speaker 3: and run a massive program of one hundred and fifty people,
- 13:52Speaker 3: do everything that you've got to do, from recruiting to
- 13:56Speaker 3: nil to staffing, and then get everybody on the same page.
- 14:02Speaker 3: A bunch of eighteen and twenty three year old guys
- 14:04Speaker 3: who were thinking about girls and video games and a
- 14:08Speaker 3: million other things while also wanting to play at a
- 14:11Speaker 3: high level in football, which takes me to what Jackson
- 14:14Speaker 3: and I talked about off the air. Guys who make it,
- 14:18Speaker 3: like Mullin and Tubberville who had no head coaching experience
- 14:22Speaker 3: but were super successful in Oxford and Startbull, and then
- 14:26Speaker 3: guys who had head coaching experience that were maybe on
- 14:29Speaker 3: a rehab tour in some way, shape or form. Jackie Cheryl,
- 14:34Speaker 3: he beat Texas five times in a row. He had
- 14:37Speaker 3: to get run off. They got him on you know,
- 14:39Speaker 3: one tire, a diet coke, and a cheese and a cheeseburger.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Lane Kiffin comes into Ole Misk a rehab tour, but
- 14:51Speaker 3: it laid the groundwork at Florida Atlantic. Kiffin the most
- 14:56Speaker 3: successful college football coach in the history of the state
- 14:57Speaker 3: of Mississippi. Dan is up there with Bault and some
- 15:01Speaker 3: others and it's tough to compare errors, right, especially when
- 15:05Speaker 3: you're actually playing some real schedules. Now, so what we
- 15:11Speaker 3: were talking about yesterday is guys that guys that may not.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Have enough bite f you and.
- 15:16Speaker 3: Them Mark Pope at Kentucky and Kaylin de Boor at Alabama.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Let me walk you through this. So Mark Pope has
- 15:27Speaker 3: to try to follow John CALIPERI, I mean, just a
- 15:32Speaker 3: massive brand and personality, and y'all know, I mean I
- 15:35Speaker 3: talk about it all the time. They use this, right,
- 15:38Speaker 3: John Calipari walks in. He takes all the oxygen in
- 15:40Speaker 3: the room in less than five seconds. Mark Pope does
- 15:44Speaker 3: not Nick Saban's presence even though he's like five six,
- 15:49Speaker 3: I mean he looks like a you know the way walks.
- 15:53Speaker 3: I mean, this guy's got a presence. Then you got
- 15:56Speaker 3: Kaylen to Boor. These are alpha pros that live and
- 16:01Speaker 3: breathe Kentucky basketball, Alabama football three hundred and sixty five
- 16:04Speaker 3: days a year. Most Kentucky fans have no idea that
- 16:08Speaker 3: Will Stein is their head football coach. To say, Alabama
- 16:10Speaker 3: doesn't know who their basketball or baseball coach is and
- 16:13Speaker 3: doesn't care. So my point is that they both seem
- 16:17Speaker 3: like really nice guys, and that's cute and sweet and fun.
- 16:22Speaker 3: But John CALIPERI, you knew who was running Kentucky basketball.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Nick Saban, you know you knew who was running Alabama football.
- 16:35Speaker 3: Kaylen de Boor at Bama, Mark Pope hoops coach at Kentucky,
- 16:39Speaker 3: not that they don't know the game, and god, Kaylan,
- 16:43Speaker 3: I mean Pope did a good job at BYU.
- 16:45Speaker 4: But Kaylin de Boor won everywhere. But can he win?
- 16:52Speaker 3: I mean Burne went ahead and locked him up for
- 16:54Speaker 3: seventy five million because because of the Penn State Michigan stuff. Okay,
- 16:58Speaker 3: I mean he he was like, I don't Yeah, the
- 17:02Speaker 3: fan base is mad because we just lost to Indiana.
- 17:04Speaker 3: We actually won a road game against the power four
- 17:06Speaker 3: team in the College Football Playoff. But nobody talks about
- 17:10Speaker 3: the Oklahoma game being down big in the first half,
- 17:12Speaker 3: coming back and absolutely dominating them the last sixty percent
- 17:16Speaker 3: of the game. Nobody talks about that. It's all about
- 17:18Speaker 3: we lost to a basketball school that we've never watched
- 17:21Speaker 3: one series of them play football. In Indiana? Well, he
- 17:25Speaker 3: what burns there thinking who we gonna get? I mean,
- 17:30Speaker 3: Kaitlyn Devors proven he's not saving neither's anybody else, no one,
- 17:35Speaker 3: Ryan Day, Kirby smart. You can argue Kirby should have
- 17:39Speaker 3: won another national championship before the nil reset. The whole talent,
- 17:46Speaker 3: you know, the water down talent that we have. Now
- 17:48Speaker 3: again he won two. It's incredible. I'm just saying there
- 17:54Speaker 3: was a window there where you're like, damn, they're gonna
- 17:56Speaker 3: win a third. He's gonna surpass Dabo and match urban Meyer.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Now it may not get saving, although he's still a
- 18:04Speaker 3: young man. He may It's gonna be tougher now right.
- 18:09Speaker 3: It wasn't tough the old way. But I was thinking
- 18:13Speaker 3: about that with Mark Pope and do they have enough
- 18:15Speaker 3: teeth edge to drive the programs where they want?
- 18:22Speaker 4: Maybe? Maybe not.
- 18:24Speaker 3: Kaitlin's had some success. Mark Pope's deal last year looked weird.
- 18:28Speaker 3: There were times they were pretty good.
- 18:30Speaker 4: Times. I was like, what is going on with Kentucky.
- 18:33Speaker 3: You don't even look like you can play. They're pumping
- 18:36Speaker 3: in plenty of money. We've heard they're spending twenty to
- 18:38Speaker 3: twenty two million on their roster. He hired Mo Williams
- 18:41Speaker 3: from Jackson State, also got his son, so he did
- 18:45Speaker 3: shake it up a little bit. There was a lot
- 18:46Speaker 3: of chatter within the Mississippi state fan base a couple
- 18:50Speaker 3: of years ago to go get Mo Williams as the
- 18:53Speaker 3: quote unquote offensive coordinator and the chris Chians. Mark Pope
- 18:56Speaker 3: looked at it said, I need some juice. Mo's got
- 18:58Speaker 3: some serious ties to doubt players too. I think, I
- 19:01Speaker 3: mean Kentucky's got ties there, players wherever. But it couldn't
- 19:05Speaker 3: hurt you know. Those are my thoughts your reaction on
- 19:09Speaker 3: the Dancing Rabbit golf text line six oh one eight
- 19:12Speaker 3: eight five eight eight five three seven seven six. The
- 19:16Speaker 3: show is driven by Fleetway Market. Fuel up there great
- 19:21Speaker 3: local Mississippi company, clean, great restrooms, unbelievable selection of beer.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Don't forget about this fleet Way market. And many of
- 19:32Speaker 3: them have a market cafe, but that market cafe and

- 22:03Speaker 3: and if Miami takes him and the doctors don't say no,
- 22:07Speaker 3: then Saban doesn't go to Alabama, and then what does
- 22:10Speaker 3: the college football and the SEC look like? That we
- 22:13Speaker 3: all love, So we bring in Mike D on the
- 22:15Speaker 3: Farm Bureau Insurance guest line. Mike D. We've we've had
- 22:22Speaker 3: many segments with you on Drew, but we can't do enough.
- 22:25Speaker 3: What was it like right when Drew got to know
- 22:29Speaker 3: this young, young, young Drew Brees that's trying to rehab
- 22:33Speaker 3: his shoulder and boyish good looks. Maybe I don't know
- 22:38Speaker 3: if naive is the right word because he's already been
- 22:40Speaker 3: in the NFL and proven, But what was it like
- 22:43Speaker 3: to cover him that first year?
- 22:45Speaker 1: Mike D.
- 22:48Speaker 2: It was a lot of different features through it, you know,
- 22:53Speaker 2: having watched him, just how successful we were for Due
- 22:58Speaker 2: and then he goes to San Diego and you know
- 23:02Speaker 2: he hit some high notes there, but you you eventually,
- 23:06Speaker 2: once they picked Philip Rivers in round one that he
- 23:10Speaker 2: wasn't going to stay there, that something was going to happen,
- 23:14Speaker 2: and he teme in here with a chip on his shoulder. Again,
- 23:20Speaker 2: he had been through surgery that had not been done
- 23:24Speaker 2: before at that time, Doctor James Andrews had done surgery,
- 23:31Speaker 2: but not on the quarterback position and coming back from that.
- 23:38Speaker 2: And so from a Demeter standpoint, he's always been a
- 23:42Speaker 2: super focused guy. He's always been the type of individual
- 23:46Speaker 2: that's going to give you everything. He's got to get
- 23:50Speaker 2: back to playing. But there was a lot of uncertainty
- 23:56Speaker 2: about Drew Brees because there was no tech book about
- 24:01Speaker 2: this is how so and so came back from that
- 24:04Speaker 2: jury that had not happened before. And so while there
- 24:10Speaker 2: was excitement because the team had drafted Reggie Bush, Sean
- 24:17Speaker 2: had a lot of excitement around him. Drew had a
- 24:20Speaker 2: lot of excitement around him, there was also uncertainty. And
- 24:26Speaker 2: I remember Zach Street telling me the story that you know, listen,
- 24:32Speaker 2: he said, I'm just trying to make the team at
- 24:34Speaker 2: this point, I'm a late round pick. I'm trying to
- 24:37Speaker 2: make the team. But in watching him through the first
- 24:40Speaker 2: few times, he was like, man, you know, he never
- 24:43Speaker 2: threw football more than twenty yards in trading camp. You
- 24:49Speaker 2: think about that never threw a football more than twenty yards.
- 24:54Speaker 2: And Zach was like, Okay, I guess maybe it'll come around.
- 24:58Speaker 2: And I think it was the third preseason game they
- 25:02Speaker 2: called the play and you know then you would be
- 25:06Speaker 2: a longer pass and Drew hid it and Zach was, Okay,
- 25:10Speaker 2: that's why we got it. That's that's why we got him.
- 25:14Speaker 2: So it was a process with it. But I'll be
- 25:16Speaker 2: honest with you. His demeanor on how he changed things
- 25:20Speaker 2: and how he reacted to everyone and everybody never really changed.
- 25:28Speaker 2: The Drew Brees that came in and O six to
- 25:31Speaker 2: the Drew Brees when he were tired. He was the
- 25:34Speaker 2: same guy. Okay, so a little bit richer towards the end,
- 25:39Speaker 2: but that he was the same guy. And his interaction,
- 25:46Speaker 2: you know, he sort of has a bit of a
- 25:48Speaker 2: dry sense of humor about it, and so you you
- 25:52Speaker 2: get accustomed to, you know, his personality and just how
- 25:56Speaker 2: he reacts to certain things, and you know, he's the
- 26:00Speaker 2: guys he's all business. Now, I'm gonna be honest, he
- 26:05Speaker 2: is all business and he'll you know, he'll have a
- 26:09Speaker 2: little good time, you know, and that sort of thing.
- 26:12Speaker 2: But man, he's all about doing Wood's best to get
- 26:17Speaker 2: himself better as a player. And I never thought he'd
- 26:22Speaker 2: be a coach because I thought, you know, those type
- 26:24Speaker 2: individuals sometimes they don't understand what other people go through
- 26:31Speaker 2: to struggle. And he did have his struggles. But it's
- 26:36Speaker 2: hard for a guy who is that great to teach
- 26:41Speaker 2: somebody else. Yeah, okay, you can work with them and
- 26:45Speaker 2: try to help him, but it's hard to teach him
- 26:49Speaker 2: what you know. That would be like Nolan Ryan. Okay,
- 26:52Speaker 2: let me teach you how to throw a fastball. Okay,
- 26:56Speaker 2: no one knows how to do it, and he can
- 26:59Speaker 2: help you with it, but it would be really difficult
- 27:03Speaker 2: for him. And I'm glad you brought it up. Rukas. Actually,
- 27:08Speaker 2: he's he's going to join us this afternoon ontalk.
- 27:11Speaker 4: Okay, I'm jealous. I'm jealous.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Yeah, he's coming on at five third, So glad to
- 27:20Speaker 2: have him on. And he's, uh, he's still working out,
- 27:23Speaker 2: you know, in California with Saints quarterbacks and receivers.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Oh wow, All right, Mike Detillier will have Drew Brees
- 27:33Speaker 3: on w w L Radio, New Orleans, Mike d Afternoon Drive.
- 27:38Speaker 3: And that's cool. We've interviewed some cool people. But the
- 27:42Speaker 3: fact that Mike's interviewed Drew Brees one hundred times or whatever,
- 27:46Speaker 3: I'm jealous. Okay, So with Drew year one, they got
- 27:51Speaker 3: the NFC Championship game. When did you know, Mike d
- 27:55Speaker 3: that the thing was cooking? When were you sitting up
- 27:58Speaker 3: there in the press box or WWL where you said,
- 28:02Speaker 3: holy smokes, this team could do something really special. In
- 28:05Speaker 3: year one of Drew and Shawn, the.
- 28:09Speaker 2: First couple of games that was like, okay, there's some
- 28:13Speaker 2: momentum on this team. Really didn't know how good they were.
- 28:18Speaker 2: They had twenty nine new players on a fifty three
- 28:20Speaker 2: man roster. The think of that, you know, it was
- 28:26Speaker 2: a new coaching staff. We didn't know a lot about
- 28:30Speaker 2: Sean Payton and his coaching staff, and it was sort
- 28:35Speaker 2: of a get to know in year one. But I
- 28:38Speaker 2: would think midway into the season he started to have
- 28:42Speaker 2: the feeling this team was really good. And I had
- 28:48Speaker 2: good thoughts early on that they could run the ball
- 28:52Speaker 2: because you know, with that combination in the backfield of
- 28:56Speaker 2: Luce McAllister and Reggie Bush that was really dynamic. The
- 29:02Speaker 2: surprise was Marcus Colston was a seventh round pick and
- 29:09Speaker 2: what he was able to do. In year one, their
- 29:12Speaker 2: offensive line played really well. The defense it was kind
- 29:18Speaker 2: of a thrown together unit and Gary Gary Gibbs did
- 29:23Speaker 2: a really good job of coordinating that defense. But I
- 29:29Speaker 2: would say it was probably midway into the season because
- 29:32Speaker 2: I mean, there are people always put this buy and
- 29:35Speaker 2: the sky stuff, but early on you really didn't know
- 29:42Speaker 2: because there were so many new elements to this football team,
- 29:47Speaker 2: and how would it stay together? You know, Okay, they
- 29:51Speaker 2: got off to a hot start, but would it be
- 29:53Speaker 2: able to sustain this play into the season. Now Drew's cooking,
- 29:59Speaker 2: they got a running game, and you saying, hey, you know,
- 30:04Speaker 2: they might be pretty dull going good here, and sure
- 30:07Speaker 2: enough to think that that team that had won three
- 30:11Speaker 2: games the year before, you know, goes to the NFC
- 30:15Speaker 2: Championship game. I always told this to coach Peyton. It
- 30:20Speaker 2: was the greatest coaching job he ever did in New Orleans.
- 30:23Speaker 2: It was the very best when you have that many
- 30:26Speaker 2: and you plays players on a team and piecing that
- 30:30Speaker 2: all together. I used this term two days ago when
- 30:36Speaker 2: somebody asked me to describe it. I said, it was
- 30:38Speaker 2: the first NFL NIL team get to get deep into
- 30:43Speaker 2: the playoffs. Because you think about twenty nine or fifty
- 30:47Speaker 2: three when you guys that that's a chunk, and boy,
- 30:54Speaker 2: it worked, and man, they started to believe in themselves
- 30:58Speaker 2: and started to believe in Drew. And you had a
- 31:02Speaker 2: really dynamic backfield with dust McAllister in his prime along
- 31:08Speaker 2: with Reggie Bush.
- 31:10Speaker 3: What Mike Ntilier has been covering the Saints for forty years,
- 31:13Speaker 3: He joins us on the Out of Bound show. Drew
- 31:15Speaker 3: brees first ballot Hall of Famer. Y'all know, he brought
- 31:18Speaker 3: the Lombardi Trophy to New Orleans Super Bowl, Sean Drew
- 31:23Speaker 3: and so many others, And as Drew said in the
- 31:26Speaker 3: audio that we dropped earlier, he realized that he was
- 31:30Speaker 3: going to be a part of the resurrection of one
- 31:32Speaker 3: of America's greatest cities. And the rest is history. Football
- 31:36Speaker 3: drove it, Culinary drove it, Mike lived it, and people
- 31:40Speaker 3: rallied and it was just it was increasing. They went
- 31:43Speaker 3: to the NFC Championship game in year one. Mike, what
- 31:46Speaker 3: was that first home playoff game? Like, I think I
- 31:49Speaker 3: guess the Eagles in the Supernome.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:52Speaker 2: Man, it was a crazy atmosphere. We were doing pre
- 31:56Speaker 2: game outside. Okay, at that time, and man, the fans
- 32:02Speaker 2: were some revved up about it. And the Eagles came
- 32:05Speaker 2: in here with a would have bad to the bone defense.
- 32:08Speaker 2: They were really good and that game, the one thing
- 32:12Speaker 2: I remember was Deuce. I mean he sort of put
- 32:15Speaker 2: that team on his back late and he carried him
- 32:19Speaker 2: through running the football. He was fantastic in that game.
- 32:24Speaker 2: But the atmosphere was electric. H no matter because I parked.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Somebody actually drove me to the game. So we actually
- 32:37Speaker 2: parked about a block and a half away from the
- 32:41Speaker 2: dome and I had to walk, uh, you know to
- 32:45Speaker 2: where we did three man, you got stopped, like every
- 32:49Speaker 2: two steps stop, two steps stopped. People were all excited.
- 32:54Speaker 2: They were some thrilled that the Saints were, you know,
- 33:00Speaker 2: in the playoffs, had an opportunity. The day before, the
- 33:07Speaker 2: NBC Nightly News did a segment on the Saints and
- 33:12Speaker 2: I got interviewed for it, and I'm like, man, NBC
- 33:16Speaker 2: Nightly News doing a story on the Saints, and it
- 33:20Speaker 2: went to show that, you know, I think the win,
- 33:26Speaker 2: the winning ways that the Saints got for many people
- 33:30Speaker 2: who suffered devastating losses in Katrina. It was sort of
- 33:36Speaker 2: the look beyond, you know, Hey, look, we difficult times,
- 33:42Speaker 2: and it gave them some relief. And I think every
- 33:46Speaker 2: player that talked to you back then said the same
- 33:49Speaker 2: thing that they knew they were playing for something bigger
- 33:54Speaker 2: than just a football game. You were playing for a
- 33:57Speaker 2: community that had really been devastating in many ways, and
- 34:03Speaker 2: they wanted to give everything they had to them to
- 34:06Speaker 2: give to make them happy for a little while. And
- 34:09Speaker 2: then you know, you have to go home and try
- 34:11Speaker 2: to rebuild everything. So it was. It was a crazy time.
- 34:16Speaker 2: And you know, I live sixty miles south and to
- 34:22Speaker 2: west of New Orleans. The community I live in, we
- 34:27Speaker 2: didn't really have a much damage done for Katrina at all.
- 34:33Speaker 2: It goes to show what you know with a hurricane,
- 34:35Speaker 2: how you know you're just living a little bit away
- 34:38Speaker 2: and how it doesn't affect you. Now, Ida was a
- 34:41Speaker 2: different story. We got I got a direct hit from Ida,
- 34:45Speaker 2: but Katrina, we didn't get that. Here on the Bayou
- 34:49Speaker 2: at all, are very little of it. And yet the
- 34:53Speaker 2: New Orleans and Medici community really really caught it. And
- 34:56Speaker 2: when the levees broke, that was under believable devastation. No
- 35:01Speaker 2: matter where you passed, you know, there were furniture in
- 35:05Speaker 2: people's you know, stuff inside their home that were outside.
- 35:10Speaker 2: You know, it damaged, you didn't have it anymore, you
- 35:14Speaker 2: lost it. So many people lost everything with it, and
- 35:17Speaker 2: I think the players felt that that. You know, hey, listen,
- 35:20Speaker 2: we planned for something a lot bigger than a football game.
- 35:25Speaker 3: Mike Detilier WWL Radio on the Farm Bureau Insurance guest Line.
- 35:31Speaker 3: He's sharing stories of the resurrection of one of America's
- 35:37Speaker 3: greatest cities, New Orleans, post Katrina, and what Drew Brees
- 35:41Speaker 3: and Sean Payton, among many many others did for the city,
- 35:46Speaker 3: Drew's going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on
- 35:48Speaker 3: August eighth, and who that nation will be partying on
- 35:53Speaker 3: that Saturday. Mike, if you could pinpoint one thing that
- 35:57Speaker 3: this is hard to do because he did so many things. Well,
- 36:01Speaker 3: but you've been around NFL people for forty years. If
- 36:05Speaker 3: you could pinpoint one thing that made Drew Brees the
- 36:10Speaker 3: quarterback that he is.
- 36:13Speaker 4: What was it?
- 36:15Speaker 2: His passion for the game. I mean, I've been around
- 36:19Speaker 2: a lot of athletes, but very few of them had
- 36:24Speaker 2: his passion for what he did. I mean, he put
- 36:29Speaker 2: everything he had in. He was super competitive. This was
- 36:35Speaker 2: after a practice one time they had a little dunk
- 36:37Speaker 2: tank and so everybody would sit on that little stool
- 36:45Speaker 2: the way to get dunked, and Drew and some of
- 36:47Speaker 2: the other quarterbacks came over and man, Drew was competitive
- 36:51Speaker 2: with that. He missed it the first time completely, you know,
- 36:57Speaker 2: he missed that big section that hit. But that was
- 37:02Speaker 2: the last time he missed it. He missed it once.
- 37:05Speaker 2: Everything else if you were sitting on there, you got
- 37:08Speaker 2: dunked because he was so upset that he had missed
- 37:15Speaker 2: it the first time, and after that, if you were
- 37:19Speaker 2: sitting up there, you were getting with He was not
- 37:24Speaker 2: gonna he was not gonna miss it, and so he
- 37:28Speaker 2: you know, that was him. He was super passionate about
- 37:32Speaker 2: it and he was listen. I think the one thing
- 37:36Speaker 2: that gets overlooked is how talented an athlete he is.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Right he was. He's a tremendous athlete. Plays pickleball today,
- 37:45Speaker 2: plays left handed because he can't really lift his right
- 37:49Speaker 2: his right arm up anymore. So he learned how to
- 37:52Speaker 2: play golf and pickleball and over his left hand, which
- 37:56Speaker 2: is just amazing. But it goes to show, you know,
- 38:00Speaker 2: how Drew Brees is as a competitor, and there's nothing
- 38:06Speaker 2: you know, if you challenge him, you you in for
- 38:09Speaker 2: quite a battle. You might beat him, but you in
- 38:13Speaker 2: for quite a battle to do it. And that and
- 38:16Speaker 2: I think he takes that now into being a businessman
- 38:21Speaker 2: that you know, he's competitive out there and and he
- 38:24Speaker 2: you know, he's involved in so many things locally here
- 38:27Speaker 2: and also out in California. But I would say his
- 38:31Speaker 2: passion for the game is the one thing that drives
- 38:35Speaker 2: him because you know what, all his life people told him,
- 38:38Speaker 2: you're not big enough, right, and it stits in his head.
- 38:42Speaker 2: It's a great tennis player. He's a really good golfer.
- 38:47Speaker 2: He taught you know, he talked to us last year
- 38:50Speaker 2: about this for quite some time. We did a show
- 38:53Speaker 2: at Manning's Children's Hospital and Archie recalled I'm giving Drew
- 39:01Speaker 2: an award as the best quarterback in the state of Texas,
- 39:06Speaker 2: and Drew started to go off on the fact he
- 39:09Speaker 2: grew up a Texas Aggie fan. He wanted to play
- 39:12Speaker 2: for Texas A and M. They never offered him. Same
- 39:17Speaker 2: thing at the University of Texas never offered him. And
- 39:23Speaker 2: I think you if you listened, you can almost hear
- 39:27Speaker 2: that I'm gonna show you. I'm gonna show you just
- 39:31Speaker 2: how good I am. And he did go to Purdue.
- 39:34Speaker 2: It and he says, now, you know it's the best
- 39:36Speaker 2: thing to happen. I tell her to ay bear all
- 39:38Speaker 2: the time. Okay. He was a one year quarterback in
- 39:41Speaker 2: high school and he wanted to go to LSU. His
- 39:44Speaker 2: dad was a huge LSU fan, and he wanted to
- 39:47Speaker 2: go to LSU to play. LSU never offered him. He
- 39:50Speaker 2: was the last scholarship given to Northwestern State in Louisiana.
- 39:54Speaker 2: He went there and he got mentored by Joe Ferguson,
- 39:58Speaker 2: former Arkansas Wow in the NFL for years with Buffalo.
- 40:02Speaker 2: That would have never happened had he went to LSU.
- 40:06Speaker 2: And sometimes God put you in the right place, right time,
- 40:10Speaker 2: and for Drew, he was right place, right time to
- 40:13Speaker 2: go to Purdue. They threw the football on a tremendous
- 40:17Speaker 2: amount and it honed his craft as a as a passer.
- 40:23Speaker 2: And you know then the other things that happened with
- 40:26Speaker 2: the shoulder injury, and you know that they had to
- 40:29Speaker 2: make the decision, and he knew politically when you look
- 40:33Speaker 2: at it, that when you picked Philip Urpos as high
- 40:36Speaker 2: as they did, and you know, you weren't going to stay.
- 40:40Speaker 2: You were going to have to go somewhere else. And
- 40:43Speaker 2: the fact that Miami's doctors Randy Mullers told us the
- 40:48Speaker 2: story numerous times. He was there. He was the GM
- 40:51Speaker 2: for Nick Saban. Randy's a consultant now with the Saints,
- 40:55Speaker 2: but wasn't farmer GM there with the Saints, and he
- 40:59Speaker 2: talked about, you know, doctor stole them. We can't guarantee anything,
- 41:05Speaker 2: and so they made the decision to sort of move on,
- 41:10Speaker 2: and that that changed the course of two teams dramatically,
- 41:16Speaker 2: the Dolphins and then certainly changed the team with the Saints.
- 41:20Speaker 2: And then what it did for University of Alabama, What
- 41:25Speaker 2: what happened there sort of change the outlook all the
- 41:29Speaker 2: way across the board, so you know, kind of the
- 41:33Speaker 2: one domino hit the next domino to get you out.
- 41:37Speaker 2: But uh, you know, Drew again, his impact on this team.
- 41:42Speaker 2: He's there. There probably were players that were you know,
- 41:45Speaker 2: from a talent standpoint, as talented is Drew, but the
- 41:50Speaker 2: impact he had for this community, this team, Uh, I'm
- 41:55Speaker 2: not going to live long enough to see another one
- 41:57Speaker 2: like him.
- 41:59Speaker 3: Wow, that was that was incredible right there, over twenty
- 42:04Speaker 3: minutes on Drew Brees' first ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer,
- 42:11Speaker 3: Super Bowl Lombardi Trophy winner for New Orleans and as
- 42:16Speaker 3: Mike I've asked Mike this before, he is the number
- 42:19Speaker 3: one dude in nor Orleans, Saints history, and Louisiana. And
- 42:22Speaker 3: that's counting a bunch of unbelievable players at both the
- 42:25Speaker 3: Saints and LSU. But he's he's the number one dude.
- 42:29Speaker 3: And man, there's gonna be a lot of tears in
- 42:33Speaker 3: a good way on August eighth, as people watch Sean
- 42:38Speaker 3: Payton introducing him and Drew talk about his journey.
- 42:43Speaker 2: To Yeah, it's okay. Everybody's journey is different. In the
- 42:48Speaker 2: NFL that you know, there's so many great stories, but
- 42:52Speaker 2: you know, people say, you know, what's the one thing
- 42:55Speaker 2: you take away from Drew and what he did for
- 42:57Speaker 2: the city, in the community and for the the who
- 43:00Speaker 2: that nation's all great, But if you really want to
- 43:03Speaker 2: see what type of impact he is, walk with him
- 43:07Speaker 2: for a little while somewhere I can't imagine, and you
- 43:11Speaker 2: and you feel like a cheap watch to stop every
- 43:15Speaker 2: few seconds, you can't take two steps, and then you
- 43:23Speaker 2: you know somebody's stopping taking a picture of autograph and
- 43:26Speaker 2: all that, and he's he's so good about, you know,
- 43:30Speaker 2: doing all those things and especially with kids and all
- 43:33Speaker 2: he you know, and uh, you know, and I think
- 43:36Speaker 2: he's an inspiration that you don't have to be that
- 43:39Speaker 2: six foot four, two hundred no doubt quarter about Mike D.
- 43:45Speaker 4: That was awesome. You crushed it. Thank you so much.
- 43:50Speaker 3: We may do two or three more hits on Drew
- 43:52Speaker 3: Brees before August eighth.
- 43:54Speaker 4: Have a great week, my man. Thank you, Mike D.
- 43:57Speaker 2: Thank you. Appreciate it.
- 43:58Speaker 3: At Mike Detillia on Twitter, was that good or what?
- 44:02Speaker 3: Twenty three minutes on the first ballot Pro Football Hall
- 44:06Speaker 3: of Famer number nine to you, Drew Brees
