- 0:00SPEAKER_00: You've tried organizing your space,
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: your schedule,
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: your business, but have you ever thought about your relationship with money?
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Your money mindset matters, and it might have been getting in your way this whole time.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: If you're smart and capable,
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: but overwhelmed by too many decisions,
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: half-built systems,
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: and things you keep meaning to get to, you're in the right place.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Simple Enough.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: I began to notice the connection between money mindset and clutter
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: when I was working with clients.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: And pretty much all of the time,
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: they had an excuse for why they had certain things in their life.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: And the excuses were almost always something to do with money.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: And that's when it hit me.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: There's a connection here.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: We need to look at this connection and see if there's a way to break through it more easily.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to give you a list of the excuses I heard,
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: and I want you to begin to notice the contradictions in the statements
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: between what they're trying to achieve and what they're saying about their things
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: and how it's all connected to money mindset.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Most of the time it's the poverty mindset, but sometimes it's the solution mindset as well.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: You know, throwing money at the problem will help.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: So just notice as I read these things off,
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: what thoughts come to your mind and if you do these things as well.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: So things around clutter and money that I hear frequently.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: I can't afford it.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: It was on sale.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: I might need it someday.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: I don't know what it is.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Just in case of the zombie apocalypse.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: I'm waiting till I have more money.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: So I went ahead and just bought all these other things to make do in the meantime.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: It was cheaper or more convenient than doing it right the first time when I have
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: the money next week when I get paid.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: All of these things are literally things I've heard from clients.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Just keep that in mind.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, just a little treat.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: A thousand times leads to thinking,
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: I don't really deserve a nurturing and supportive environment,
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: so I need another little treat to make myself feel better.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: All of these thoughts reflect your relationship with yourself.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: So money, Money, clutter, self, well-being, all connected.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: And that's both the bummer and the great part about this realization.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: This connection can be a real breakthrough.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: All of these thoughts reflect your relationship with yourself.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: And it continues because avoiding money conversations and retail therapy lead
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: to more stuff in your way.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Avoiding learning how to read a statement results in not really having money in the bank.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: And when you misunderstand your needs versus your wants,
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: you're going to justify a lot of spending as stuff you need
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: when it's really just stuff you want.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: And we get so much more satisfaction with achieving our wants when we have to wait
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: a little bit, when there's a bit of anticipation as you save or work towards it.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: All of these are connected to understanding how money and the value works.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: And that's why it leads to lots of clutter.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Beanie babies, because they're valuable.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Rarity.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: It's really interesting, too.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: It doesn't have that much to do with how much money people make or have.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: It has to do with the perception.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: So I have lots of clients that are like, oh, that's not that important.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: We can let that go.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: And I'll be like, this is gold.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Or the opposite of, oh,
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: the Beanie Baby is going to be worth a gazillion dollars one day
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: and it's still worth $2.50.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: So it's about understanding how value and how to value things, including yourself, works.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter how much you spend on a purse.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: If you need a purse and you like the one that's only $2.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: $25, buy that one.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: You don't have to buy the ugly one for $10,000 to have a purse, right?
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Okay, that may be a personal judgment, but...
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: I like a good value and I like quality materials and I like having just what I need.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: I don't make the decisions on most things based on money.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: It's based on what serves the purpose I need it to serve for me
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: the most beautiful way to me personally.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: So, understand that.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: There's lots of purchasing of things because it's there,
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: and you're there at the store, and you have a card.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: So, anyway, if you're finding this to be at all intriguing, don't forget to love it.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Like, comment, rate, review, and share wherever you hear or see this podcast.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Because I really do want to streamline the world,
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: get people thinking differently about this relationship between money,
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: self, and clutter.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: And they can't do that if they don't know about it,
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: and the algorithm won't share it until you tell them it's valuable.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: So I appreciate your help.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: The best part of exploring this connection is that when you begin
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: to understand your own patterns is when you start to clear the clutter
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: because you are evaluating the value to you of the things you want.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Transformation begins with discomfort, so it's still valuable.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: See where I'm going with this?
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Trying to untangle the misunderstandings about the various words and concepts
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: that are surrounding your acquiring of items.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: It might just be that the solution you discover is the thing you've been avoiding
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: that is cheaper, easier,
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: and faster than waiting for all those lotions and potions
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: to make you magically younger.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: That's priceless information, right?
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: That's why we go through the clutter.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: That's why we go through the discomfort of admitting that we overbought some things
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: or we bought the wrong things or they didn't work out.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: They didn't actually make me magically younger.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: And breaking free of comparison,
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: realizing that you've been trying to keep up with the Joneses,
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: shall we say,
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: or look like the fake people on TikTok,
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: may be costing you thousands of dollars every day.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Maybe you are lacking a little bit of security and so you overpurchase some things
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: so you don't run out just in case.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Not of the zombie apocalypse, but in case you don't have money when you run out of toilet paper.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: That could be a thing.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: I'm just saying, may have countered it.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: But seriously,
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: one of the most satisfying things about my work is watching the realization
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: on my client's face when they finally realize they've been doing it to themselves.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Because that happens at the point where we're looking at 37 cans of air freshener,
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: 19 pairs of very similar black pants, or 15 different skincare regimens.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: And awareness leads to action.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: So now that you know you have 37 cans of air freshener,
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: maybe you realize you have 10 of those because you didn't actually like the flavor,
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: the flavor, the scent.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: And so you're able to let go of those.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: And now you're able to let go of those.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: You have less and now you have more space and a better understanding of
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: where you wasted a little bit of money.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: So awareness leads to action and the awareness comes
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: from recognizing your own patterns of how you've spent money on the things
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: that are now in your way.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: It's all connected.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: The best part is it's possible to clear clutter, debt, and save time all at the same time.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Because as you become more knowledgeable and empowered about everything
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: in your life, everything gets easier.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: You have better decision criteria and your decisions get better.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: I want to help you out with this a little bit.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: And I have the One Minute Mail Solution.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: I created it because so much of the paper and bills are where
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: the money avoidance physically lives in people's spaces.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: The pile of More than Organized.net slash one-minute mail.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: And I want to leave you with just one more thing.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Well, a couple things.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: First, let's see how to wrap this up in a bow for you, right?
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: The money mindset is really how you see the world.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: And how you do one thing is how you do everything.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: So connecting the impact of money and clutter on your well-being
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: and how it interferes with who and how you want to be is critical to living
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: a more satisfying and meaningful life.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: So the one small thing you can do this week to become more aware and begin making
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: the connections for yourself is to actually track your spending for a couple
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: of weeks.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: Just carry a small notebook or use your phone and Or save the receipts and at
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: the end of the day, record them.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: And understand it's not about how much you spend or specifically what you're spending on.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: It's about noticing and connecting.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: Was this something you actually wanted or is it a make-do item?
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Is it something that's going to make you feel better for a few minutes or something
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: that brings you joy for months or years?
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: When you used that cart to buy it, was it for something that would serve you long-term?
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: Was it something that you have the cash to pay off right now?
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: Or how many hours will you have to work to pay for it?
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Just become aware.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: No judgments here.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: We've all been in situations where we overspent or we spent on the wrong things
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: or we weren't really clear on what we wanted.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: But this is the first step to figuring that out.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Thanks for spending this time with me today.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: Before you go,
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: choose one thing from this episode that could make life just
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: a little simpler this week.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: Not perfect, just simple enough.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: Come join me on Substack at morethanorganized.substack.com and remember,
